LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Lone Signal by pyrofoux 2021-04-29T01:29:35Z

Great writing! Like the UI and the animations. I'm guessing this is Twine, but I don't think I have ever seen a Twine-game with this much graphics. The watch you could click if you were impatient was a funny touch. Good job!

Red Stranding by Alchemic 2021-04-29T12:38:27Z

Cool game! Really enjoyed it. Making it online was a cool decision and way beyond what you would expect from a jam game made over the weekend. Intuitively I expected being able to jump down cliffs and and use the ladder to climb back up, but that might only be from playing Zelda. Besides, it would make it really easy to escape the gun foxes (haha!). My only grief was the slightly complicated controls that didn't feel super intuitive. A very solid effort and a really good game! Good job!

Abyss. by Darylsteak 2021-04-27T16:12:34Z

Great atmosphere and the sonar was a very inventive mechanic, imo. Very consistent art direction and I really liked the look. I did notice that the sonar allowed you to see around corners though, which technically should not be possible, but it's not a biggie and didn't break immersion. My only grief was the grid snapping which made movement feel a bit stuttery. Overall, it was a fun game that fit well with the theme. Good job!

A Cat in the Aliens' Lair by Sheinxy 2021-04-27T15:54:19Z

I enjoyed this game. The idea of distracting the aliens with light and sound was perfect. On the final level took some trial and error until I understod what I was supposed to do, and when I figured out I think there was some kind of glitch where instead of showing me the end-screen, the level reset. It worked on the next try though. Well executed and a good take on the theme. I can totally see this turning into a longer game with more kitten-inspired mechanics. Good job!

My only suggestion is that a more traditional "fog of war" effect would perhaps make more sense and fit the graphics style more than the invisible light source.

Sblaaf!! by Thob 2021-04-28T21:59:32Z

Awesome looking game. Hard but good fun. Would probably work very well on mobile too. Great job!

To Return To One's Root by C3ll256 2021-04-27T16:22:06Z

Enjoyed the art style. It made the game stand out. Played it all the way to the end. I don't know if this was my computer acting up, but after a while the movement got stuck so the animal I was controlling kept moving without using the mouse button. Clicking it stopped the movement though, so it wasn't a big deal.

Boris with a crazy dream by Kirby 2021-04-27T02:22:14Z

The interactive tutorial was well executed. Good sound, kudos for providing voice acting. I think there was some influence from Among Us? Wish it was longer though. Bruh!

IDEIA DREAMER by bomdiajj 2021-04-27T03:22:47Z

I went too deep! Not sure if it was a bug or not when I got into a dream dimension when the graphics were all messed up. Kudos on a very original concept though!

Go Deep! by Ricna 2021-04-27T03:30:52Z

Love the soundtrack and the sound effects. Pretty entertaining. After a couple of conservative attempts I decided to YOLO it and try to go as fast as humanly possible, but it seemed like the... ship(?) reached terminal velocity in free fall. We need to go faster, doc!

Deep Space by Cole Hutson 2021-04-27T02:17:20Z

Liked the game! It was fun, but the very high integrity penalty for bouncing on the sides of the screen was a bit harsh!

Underground by Halogen 2021-04-29T16:12:41Z

Cute graphics! I liked it. There were a couple of bugs. If you were in a free-fall but held the movement key towards a ledge, you would stick to the ledge. I also got stuck in black void in the first cave room without a kill screen (yes, I managed to fall of the first platform )

Awesome job on your first game jam, keep it up!

Subterplane by Bigbadbison 2021-04-29T16:05:17Z

Fun game! I love how the plan would stall when the AoA was too high. Had a lot of fun trying stalling and recovering. I think I broke it though in a couple of way though, see below:

During one stall recovery attempt I was pulled up towards the ceiling, bounced of it and ended up in a free-fall outside of the map Screen Shot 2021-04-29 at 11.54.44 AM.png

It's also possible to fly backwards and get stuck in that position Screen Shot 2021-04-29 at 11.58.40 AM.png

If you spam the retry button, you spawn multiple planes Screen Shot 2021-04-29 at 12.00.57 PM.png

Finding the bugs were almost as fun as playing the game as intended, almost like a hidden easter egg. Good execution and a good game! I enjoyed it.

Dive & Dig by andrewkennedy 2021-04-29T19:47:49Z

Awesome game! Loved the idea of two parallel levels. It was quite hard to control the vehicle using the trackpad, but that's totally my own fault, not yours.

Mine Shaft by Krzyhau 2021-04-27T15:32:43Z

Best take on a minesweeper game I've seen in a long time, and probably the only minesweeper/minecraft mashup I've ever seen. Ran smooth as butter in the browser on my laptop. Controls were intuitive when I figured out I could click inside the window to capture the mouse. It was good fun and fit with the theme.

Deep Pocket Digs by ChrisAP 2021-04-28T21:06:16Z

Fun game! Reminds me a little of my own submission (shameless plug, I know). At first I was a little annoyed that the penguin(?) walked so slow but then I found the digging button and then it made sense. The game control was actually really satisfying once you got the hang of it and could jump from block to block. Great execution and an overall nice game.

Deeper And Deeper by QuantumSeagull 2021-04-27T16:29:44Z

@ricna Good suggestions! I have tweaked this for a post-jam version where gold gives you a small power-up and glowing rocks are much rarer but gives you a much larger power-up, which (I believe) makes finding them more gratifying. Thanks for playing and offering your advice.

Deeper And Deeper by QuantumSeagull 2021-04-27T16:34:41Z

@khill I'm painfully aware of this problem. I do believe it's a combination of a huge amount of blocks being loaded and unloaded every time you cross a chunk border, and poor optimization. I'm working on a fix, but it probably won't be ready before voting ends. Thanks for playing!

Deeper And Deeper by QuantumSeagull 2021-04-29T01:56:27Z

@ricna @khill @cole-hutson should run a bit smoother now

Deeper And Deeper by QuantumSeagull 2021-04-29T12:22:04Z

@hoeleboele thanks for the feedback. Some kind of sparkly effect when picking up coins would be awesome for sure. I'm collecting all your feedback for a slightly more polished post-jam version! Thanks for playing!

Deeper And Deeper by QuantumSeagull 2021-04-29T16:38:07Z

@bigbadbison Thank you for excellent feedback. I'm very grateful for every pice of advice that can improve the game and my skills as a game dev. I though a lot about having better flow in the controls, but found it hard to balance with restricted movement. My idea was that if you just could climb up anywhere and pick all the gold you see, the game would be quite easy and a little less interesting. I'd be happy to hear any suggestions or feedback on which part of the controls you found annoying so I can improve!

Yeah, cave generation needs some work. The tunnels are quite big but quite sparse. A lot of fiddling around with simplex noise until I strike just the right balance ahead.

Deeper And Deeper by QuantumSeagull 2021-04-29T17:14:52Z

@bigbadbison Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. The hitbox should probably occupy the entire "block". Thanks!

Deeper And Deeper by QuantumSeagull 2021-04-29T19:41:32Z

@andrewkennedy thank you for playing. Yes, the spawn rates need to be tweaked a bit, and so does the caves. I'm adding it to my list for the post-jam version! I'm gonna check your game out!

Deeper And Deeper by QuantumSeagull 2021-04-30T12:31:24Z

@tom-robson Thanks for playing and for the feedback. Strip mining doesn't help, because gold only spawns in caves. The post-jam version I'm working on has more caves, so you don't end up not finding one. I might add a random chance of finding gold when breaking blocks though! Audio is also on the list of things to add! I'm hoping to give the light some kind of function. Right now it's only a visual effect with no practical use.

Deeper And Deeper by QuantumSeagull 2021-05-06T13:34:08Z

@alchemic Thanks for playing and thanks for the feedback. These are all points that I have been trying to improve upon. In the current (unreleased) version, cave generation is much more consistent and spawn rates are better balanced. Another user mentioned that he wanted the gold to give a power up too. Do you share this opinion, or do you have any other idea of what would make collecting gold seem more worthwhile? I'm eager to learn an improve, and I feel like player feedback is the best way.

Mine me! by Brady Liu 2021-04-28T22:12:16Z

This was actually the first Scratch game I saw on here. Good job of putting it together. I didn't quite understand why you had to take out the pickaxe. Could as well have been out from the beginning. I didn't hear any audio either, so I refrained so I didn't rate that. Not sure if there was supposed to be any, otherwise it's possible to opt out of that rating category.

Journey To the Centre of the Earth by MegaShark 2021-04-29T01:59:37Z

Does it have a win condition? I got to what I assumed was the core of the earth, but it kept going. At 150 something I nudged a wall and lost. Overall a fun concept, but the insta-kill on the birds was a bit frustrating until you got a hang of it. Also getting killed for going off screen. Would be cool if you just wrapped around to the other side! Solid work though!

volcano falls by riana123 2021-04-28T22:07:56Z

Haha, great graphics! Particularly liked the Zoidberg-looking snowman character. I managed to complete the game after a few tries. The falling blocks were a nice touch. If anything there should probably be bounds on all sides of the map. I managed to find myself in a free-fall but without visual queues it looked a bit like the character was just stuck. Perhaps a bit tweaking of the gravity could be useful too.

Dungeon Painter by IanTheBee 2021-04-29T01:36:45Z

Awesome, I loved it. It's like a crazy 2D version of The Unfinished Swan. Loved the graphical style and the sound was great. No complaints, just praise. Looking forward to the post-jam version.

An Eternity Under Water(PROTOTYPE) by MagnusStrom 2021-04-28T22:22:30Z

It was actually a pretty good story for the scope. I like the concept of playing as someone that's gradually going insane. I would love to see a longer version of this. Somehow it reminded me a bit of the game SOMA.
