LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Depth Orb by cogcomp 2021-04-26T19:45:50Z

Art: The title screen gave me big nuke dukem vibes. I liked it! Everything else is pretty straightforward but it works for the game. Mechanics/Fun: You did a good job balancing difficulty and pacing of the game. Good intuitive controls and bouncing around is pretty fun.

There were some big frame drops during the boss fight but it was still playable and smoothed out after. Good job!

Deepeth Woods by colapolka 2021-04-28T23:38:30Z

What a unique and captivating art style. It really makes your gameth standeth outeth! Love the presentation.

Dukes of Debt by binroot 2021-04-26T19:53:09Z

This was a pretty cool game! I liked the management aspects and battle sequences. The hand drawn art looked pretty good as well. Question: is there anything in the dark green area? I explored it for a while but didn't find anything.

Dream of the Glowing Umbrella by ristoretto 2021-04-26T16:38:12Z

Sound: I really enjoyed the simple BGM loop and the overall sound of the game. After playing quite a few LDJam games your ears typically are bleeding but this game had a really nice balance between SFX and BGM.

Graphics: Great pixel art, and from the introduction to ending the aesthetic is cohesive and clean.

Game mechanics: My gripe with platformers often stem from them being too slow or kinda clunky to get into. The pacing here is excellent. Controls feel tight and the umbrella float feature is nice. Hitting several bubbles in a row is pretty fun.

Compo overview: I think overall, the goal was hit here for the game. A simple but enjoyable platform/collector. Theres quite a bit of depth to the level. I guess the only thing I could think of is perhaps adding a UI to show how much stuff is left to collect/collected so far before reaching the end. Otherwise, I think you did a fantastic job with this game.

Deeper Trance by dhim 2021-04-26T16:26:50Z

Man this is so trippy. Really innovative approach to the theme. Though my head slightly hurts now I enjoyed the trance you put me through.

Krakonsequence by JudgeZedd 2021-04-26T15:18:24Z

I really liked the humor. I feel every webGL game should have that agreement at the beginning. Good job!

X Feet Under by morphine 2021-04-26T20:32:43Z

Art/UI: I appreciated the tips and clean UI design. Slight Minecraft vibes because of the blockiness but still clean and crisp all around

Music: The BGM music had a good tune and pace to it. I like the little remix that kicks in halfway. It slaps for a while but I had to tune it down after 10 mins. Still enjoyable though!

Gameplay: The game is challenging! Feels like every block pickup and placement has to be carefully considered. You did a good job balancing it altogether. I'm definitely going to revisit this again.

Good job on the game! Looking forward to seeing more compos/jams from you.

Dig Dig Dig by Chirichirichiri 2021-04-26T16:53:57Z

Pretty cool simple mining game. The art and music mesh together nicely. You did a good job here. Looking to seeing more of your work in future compos!

Colored Roots by PlusMinus 2021-04-26T17:43:40Z

I really liked the idea and execution of the game. Maybe I'm just stupid or bad at colors but I can't seem to get past level 2? I either make brown and purple or purple and green but can't seem to make just purple and green.

Cool Dude Cave by ZachsButt 2021-04-26T22:12:42Z

I can't believe I fell for the boss' cool dude trap! VERY COOL. This was really well executed actually. Controls feel a little clunky but I think that adds to the allure? It's like an n64 game demo. Good job man.

Snake Oil by OrdiNeu 2021-04-27T01:15:26Z

Det. Pugglesworth looks a bit like he's about to sell me drugs (I think that's a plus!) Your art style is awesome and the music is pretty good too. I was never really into slot machine games but this one is actually fun. The point system from squaring off with people with the added addition of modifying your icons is a great touch. When you get an icon added to your pool, does it stick around the entire game or just for that battle? Great job!!

Drop n Grab by samguy 2021-04-26T22:07:02Z

A nice simple straightforward arcade game. I made it to about 35,000. One thing that could've made it better is if the difficulty ramped up more faster. Good job!

Bunny Bunny Dig Dig by ZakAmana 2021-04-26T17:07:04Z

Dude how on earth did you pack so many features in 2 days!? I'm really impressed by the amount you completed. I feel like this game is basically ready to launch on IOS and android. Good job dude!

Going Down by Barney25052 2021-04-26T16:42:35Z

Neat idea and good execution. The graphics have a nice pixel theme and all fit together pretty well. Like others have mentioned, keeping all three boxes alive is definitely a challenge but becomes a lot easier if you only focus on one box. Good job!

Deep Fucking Value by 420blazeit 2021-04-26T19:11:35Z

Loved the theme. GME to the moon!!

Only thing I had trouble with initially was that the ball can be dragged off screen. Without dragging it off screen there isn't enough momentum generated to shoot it over. Great idea!

Deep Fucking Value by 420blazeit 2021-04-26T19:22:10Z

@420blazeit Ah! That makes sense. I think this would make a pretty good IOS game as well. Good job man!

Soaring Under by jitspoe 2021-04-27T03:15:21Z

Man, you nailed it in every regard. From the really clean graphics to the beautiful and then hilarious piano crashes. I definitely have to revisit Godot engine. 5/5

An Eggsellent Escape by GoldenEvolution 2021-04-26T23:30:11Z

You did such a good job fitting 3 unique levels, great voice acting and really compelling visuals. You nailed the jam dude.

Throneless by AdamCYounis 2021-04-26T15:42:08Z

Such a bold and big game to undertake in 48 hours. The fact that you put together a playable and polished cohesive TRPG in 48 hours is tremendous. The art style is fantastic. I enjoyed the overall theme and the ability to pick between characters. There's only so much you can get done in 48 hours, I think you made the most of it with the time allotted.

As far as game mechanics go: the only small things I imagine you could've added with the time you had was maybe to add damage numbers? This could help make the level progression stand out more as you progress further in the game. Can't wait to see more games from you in the future.

Soul Catcher by DragonsBeardGames 2021-04-26T22:01:45Z

Dude, this is a hysterical idea lol. I used to play this minigame in Shenmue called lucky hit and this brought back good memories with a twist of that. Great job adding several layers of mechanics like leveling up and recruiting more characters. Definitely made the game have great replayability.

Also, is that your voice as the grunting AI? I kept cracking up to the sound of xylophones and enemy grunts.

I Would Like To Check Out of This Hotel by poboy 2021-04-28T17:32:08Z

I like how the main sprite gyrates to the beat. The shooting has a nice responsive feel to it as well, and the vibration is a good touch. Reminds me a bit of Gungeon but with trying to exit a hotel. Good job, funny name!

River, Carry Me Away by Noire 2021-04-27T17:30:26Z

Such a compelling music score. You can tell that you and your team carefully considered every element of this game when putting it together. For some reason, this reminded me of the latest God of War, which is one of my favorite games of all time. You should all be proud of yourselves.

Gold Rush by Thrawn911 2021-04-26T15:00:02Z

I really like the glow effects and the overall aesthetic. You did a pretty good job there.

Duskwood by Voidsay 2021-04-26T15:04:41Z

Really enjoyed the graphics and overall theme on this. You did a really good job putting together a cohesive theme and style. Also dude, I was definitely spooked when I ran into the first monster. Great job!

The little abnormality by airwaffle 2021-04-26T19:39:52Z

Dude this is so insane, I love it. You know it kinda reminds me of some Jeff Koons art or something whacky. The game mechanics kinda remind me a bit of how the ninja rope works in Worms. This game also looks like a computer AI tried to design it - I think that's a good thing. Also, are those hamburgers?

Slug Adventure by TheWinrawr 2021-04-27T01:07:10Z

I'm surprised this is a compo game with how much polish and thought you put into this. Out of the 40 or so compo games I've played so far, your music has been the best hands down. It has that nostalgic feel of an old SNES game but with a level of replayability that is fun to keep listening to. The puzzles proceedingly get slightly more difficult but the jump is never too big between stages. This game has the sort of polish like it was going to be released on Gameboy Color.

I usually like leaving my comments with a critique or two, but within 48 hours you've managed to make a fantastic compelling game centered around a simple mechanic. You should be proud!

Solar Subs by Simpathey 2021-04-28T17:14:44Z

Visuals: There's quite a few sub games during this Jam/Compo - this one is my favorite visually. The sunlight effect is well done, and visually looks striking when fish pass by to block your beams. That and the small touch of particle effects in the water gives a good full vibe to the game.

Music: You nailed the music! Great underwater vibes and an immersive theme.

Game mechanics: Simple but interesting mechanic to play through. On a longer challenge the only thing I can possibly think of adding is maybe mirrors or ways to make the shining between two submarines a bit more complex.

Only confusion: Without reading the instructions I was confused on what to do for a while. I kinda just shined the light on the sub. A lot of bad ADHD gamers like me miss instructions so maybe a little pop up on the first sub that said "click" would've resolved that. Not a big deal.

Overall, great job executing the theme and style of this game. You both should be proud!

Afraid to Turn by rhoff95 2021-04-26T17:01:59Z

Wow, this is such a polished compo game. Great job on the art and sound design. It definitely got more immersive the further you went. The limb transformation was a really cool effect as well.

Nostril Navigator by Xenon27 2021-04-26T17:03:27Z

This dudes nostrils are huge. Who knew picking boogers could be so fulfilling? Excellent execution.

My Dentures! by Luc-creationallabs 2021-04-26T15:26:53Z

Played for about half an hour with my partner. She loved it! Very addicting simple mechanics. You did a great job executing this idea. Could definitely see this as a mobile game as well. Keep it up!

Deeper Into The Forest by SnappyPath 2021-04-26T16:29:45Z

I found the game to be oddly peaceful. As others have said, the only mechanic I felt that was missing in the compo was increasing difficulty. I enjoyed the journey through the landscape though.

10,001 - A space exploration game by tengusheath 2021-04-28T17:00:04Z

I'm a big fan of the zoomed out space ship style. Perhaps an option to even zoom out more to get bearings would've been a neat little feature. Either way, great job!

Haunted Pizza Delivery by msipp27 2021-04-26T22:32:23Z

I liked the overall theme. No one is stopping me from delivering pizza to Dracula!!! .... Except the skeleton who would only turn around if I jumped.

Haunted Pizza Delivery by msipp27 2021-04-26T22:38:45Z

@msipp27 Gotcha! That makes sense.

I'm So Deep by liammasters 2021-04-26T01:10:06Z

I enjoyed how funny your game was. You did a great job capturing the theme and tone of what you were going for.

I'm So Deep by liammasters 2021-04-26T16:56:51Z

It took me a little bit to understand but I got the hang of it. I spent the first 15 minutes throwing out insults or rap lines until it started to click. (FYI The princess is not a fan of Ja'Rule). The rolling in animation makes me laugh everytime.

What I love about LDJam is I would've likely never have played a game like this on Steam. Simple and super humorous. Great job Liam!

Root Deeper by BrielleY 2021-04-26T19:29:25Z

I ended up only surviving 29 days but I really enjoyed the concept of the game! Simple, straightforward and executed very well. Great job Brielley!

Asterisk by Crychair 2021-04-28T17:26:07Z

Aside from my review- I love the name Sleepy Donut. That basically describes my soul.

Music: SLAPS! The slight details of having it be light during the menu then really kicks in as you play the game is awesome. Great detail! Plus the variations to it with the piano trills and it muting a part of the tune when a bomb goes off makes it super enjoyable without being repetitive.

Art: Cohesive and clean. Great UI design.

Gameplay: Simple but fun gameplay. It seems like there was a promotion system possibly caked in there but cut out due to time. That would've solidified the runs. Only thing I can think of maybe adding is some sort of particle effect upon dying. Though obviously you're limited in what you can do with the time allotted.

I highly recommend playing the downloaded version instead of WebGL. Explosions don't work correctly on the WebGL version and a few other bugs.

Deeper Devils by 3amsoda 2021-04-26T15:55:34Z

Hell yeah dude! This was so much fun. I only wish there were more levels!!

I felt like the mechanics were super easy and intuitive to pick up. You did a great job adding a quick intro and the recap at the end showing the stats was great touch for the Speedrunner part of me.

My stats from best playthrough: Time: 161S Deaths: 8 Shots fired: 130

Deeper Dungeon by CiYouLater 2021-04-26T22:37:49Z

Dude I suck. I keep getting beat up on the first two floors but I enjoy the faces in the game.

Dive & Dig by andrewkennedy 2021-04-28T20:52:48Z

I really enjoyed how the game paced us through the different mechanics. It was a neat way of showing us the game and it was pretty cool seeing how the ship changed every time. The dialog was also pretty hilarious! You did a great job balancing game mechanics with a fun arcade style game. Good job on the ship sprite animations too!

Dr.Pupper Heart Dogter MD by AwrGameDev 2021-04-26T22:40:02Z

Just based on the name this game is a 10 - but yeah we can't play it until you update your itch.io draft to public!

Dr.Pupper Heart Dogter MD by AwrGameDev 2021-04-26T22:51:19Z

@awrgamedev I was able to play the game and beat both levels now. I liked the overall concept and message that you put into this game dealing with several different aspects of heartbreak and being a Dogter to that. The puzzles were simple but enjoyable to go through. If you had more time, I would add a bit more complexity to the puzzles but I think you did a good job with the UI/theme considering the time allotted.

apocalypse of darkness wonderful nightmare by muzakefron 2021-04-27T01:21:14Z

Dude, this music slaps. I died 45 times, still haven't gotten past the dudes that fall down and explode. This is like my kind of style of insanity. Fast paced and challenging. The only thing I would maybe add is an air dodge similar to the ground dodge? I'm definitely gonna play this until I beat it. Great job dude.

One More Lap! by Harrison Dunn 2021-04-26T17:32:48Z

Simple, fun and elegant. The dialog was humorous and I found myself getting more engaged and into it the further I went. At first it was a little dizzying but that faded away after lap 10. Good job Harrison!

Into the Abyss by oeschmid 2021-04-26T22:57:23Z

It's really cool seeing all the different approaches people take when creating a game. This game reminded me of a polished arcade game you would find inside another game like Stardew Valley or Shenmue or something. A simple idea, with simple mechanics but executed well. Great job on this! I gotta check out PuzzleScript now.

Lord Of The Flies by PixelPortalz 2021-04-26T19:32:02Z

Anything involving poop and flies is typically a winner in my book. Good job!

Unto the Eight by Threeli 2021-04-28T17:05:30Z

I think you did a good job capturing a cohesive art style for the game. I find that particularly hard to do sometimes for Jams/Compos. The kinda offtune audio was a nice change of pace from the usual tunes that you find in games like these. The overall game mechanics were straight forward and easy to catch onto as well. However, if you're thinking of making this into a full game I would maybe try and expand a bit on the overall complexity of the system. The movement is turnbased right? If so maybe you can add another mechanic on top of that. What that might be exactly I'm not sure.

Upon full release of a game like this, I think I'd highly look forward to seeing you artistic expression with new environments as the game progresses. Good job!

DECAY by NuggetMcHotdog 2021-04-26T17:48:19Z

Visually this game is pretty stunning. Good use of lighting, vibrations, feels pretty freaky. I enjoyed your game!

Dig Deep Get Gold by Tim77 2021-04-26T01:17:07Z

You know this kinda reminds me of a song, J-Live Them thats not. I love how the music picks up pace the faster you go. You did a great job on the rhythm and simplicity execution on this.

Knee Deep in Magma by Venezia 2021-04-26T22:18:38Z

I like the ending of where we just jump into the magma. I enjoyed this straightforward platformer. The only part that was slightly frustrating was the jump pad by the end with the two spikes. Since if you didnt jump you just had to die and start over. (Very mild frustration) Good job dude.

Dive! Dive! by John Harper 2021-04-26T15:49:07Z

The acceleration and mechanics feel well polished and balanced carefully. I really enjoyed slamming down fast only to get blown up by a mine. I made it to 550m. You did a good job making a fun straightforward arcade game.

RUN FROM STUFF (2D Chase Game) by PookiPoot 2021-04-26T14:31:11Z

There is an ending - its just... very hard to get to. Good idea re:checkpoints!

RUN FROM STUFF (2D Chase Game) by PookiPoot 2021-04-26T15:56:51Z

@ristoretto @john-harper - Great feedback. Looking at it now those issues are very apparent. A few checkpoints and a bit more level clarity would've gone a long way. Thanks for playing!

RUN FROM STUFF (2D Chase Game) by PookiPoot 2021-04-26T19:41:31Z

@cogcomp Thank you! @airwaffle - Yeah I had issues getting enemies to respect their pathfinding boundaries. So after a while, the game just gets absurd and the big jelly fish is a bit broken. I think if I would have started this on Friday or Saturday I could've balanced things better. Thanks for playing!

RUN FROM STUFF (2D Chase Game) by PookiPoot 2021-04-26T21:35:29Z

@Harrison-dunn @Samguy Thank you! I can't believe I didn't catch that. I think I turned off some physic materials on the walls that kept the char from not getting stuck before. Good catch!

RUN FROM STUFF (2D Chase Game) by PookiPoot 2021-04-26T22:20:32Z

@dragonsbeardgames I think that sometimes occurs when playing in minimized mode? I'm not 100% sure but pressing escape twice should fix it. @phealsout Yeah, that sucks! I'm thinking of building this game out more and fixing a lot of the issues on it. Maybe add some roguelite features to it to give it replayability.

RUN FROM STUFF (2D Chase Game) by PookiPoot 2021-04-27T01:09:15Z

@thewinrawr I appreciate your comment. It reflects actually what I was hoping to get out of the game but didn't have enough time to put (only had one day). I agree with all your suggestions and hope to add them in a future build in a more fleshed out game. Also as an aside, I loved your game!!

@jdeedubs @muzakefron Thank you both for taking the time out to play and comment!

RUN FROM STUFF (2D Chase Game) by PookiPoot 2021-05-02T01:25:26Z

@felo07 @colapolka @milkwine @wizard-sino @jcmonkey @adamsmccall @osterzone @amar-ravi @not-tomo @spyturtle @sigill @andrewkennedy @verbante @threeli @simpathey

Thank you all for your feedback and comments. I just released a patched version that fixed collisions and added some more variants to the game. Though, granted, I think I made it harder? Next patch will have checkpoints.

Can't wait to play all your games (if I haven't already) ! Thanks for taking the time out to play.

Post-jam version can be found here: https://pooki.itch.io/run-from-stuff-v-11

Botanica by FDK 2021-04-26T17:39:19Z

I enjoyed the flopping death physics. Getting chucked by 3 snakes in a row was a pretty good time.

Deeper Caverns by Quartzified Studios 2021-04-26T20:20:13Z

Wow, dude this game feels pretty polished. I'm not the best at puzzles but I found it engaging towards the later levels. Great job on the art!

Surface by lb01 2021-04-26T22:25:24Z

Wow dude, what a compo submission. Fantastic music and fluid flight mechanics. Great job dude!

The Reapers Course by Pepper Boi 2021-04-26T22:45:09Z

The animation and pixel art are really good here. Maybe a tad bit slowed down, but good. I would have sped it all up maybe just 1.10 - 1.25x. I did enjoy frolicking

Caves of the Forgotten by CorbenG 2021-04-26T21:55:17Z

The visuals were great! I liked your choice of sfx as well. Like others have mentioned if it was a little faster I think it'd be spot on but great job considering this is a compo.
