Very charming game and agonizing mechanic haha, being forever pursued feel horrible, but I guess this is the intent here, so, well done, I like it :)

axelrinaldo 2021-04-26 11:58

I really like how this game looks! A platforming casual like me would have appreciated some checkpoints though, I really wanted to see if there was an end. :D

pookipoot 2021-04-26 14:31

There is an ending - its just... very hard to get to. Good idea re:checkpoints!

3amsoda 2021-04-26 15:30

the jump physics in the game are great, the slow start and then the sudden descent when you hit the peak of your jump is really cool.

john-harper 2021-04-26 15:30

A really interesting look. I liked the trail -- almost like a cape after the characters. The music was a nice addition. I'm wondering if the feel might be even better with a little tweaking on how the jump mechanic works... I felt like I got stuck in areas which slowed down the gameplay. A really neat, inventive take!

arnold-990 2021-04-26 15:40

good job

ristoretto 2021-04-26 15:42

I like how the game is very zoomed out, and the platforming physics reminds me of N++.

The level design of the first part is okay, spread out platforms and interesting that you try to move downwards. The seconds part had some dead ends and platforms that look like a path but aren't.

I would have played it a lot more if there were checkpoints.

pookipoot 2021-04-26 15:56

@ristoretto @john-harper - Great feedback. Looking at it now those issues are very apparent. A few checkpoints and a bit more level clarity would've gone a long way. Thanks for playing!

binroot 2021-04-26 17:59

For a second I thought this was an online socket.io type game because the NPC movement was so fluid and perfect!

cogcomp 2021-04-26 19:33

I REALLY liked this game, the graphics style and the physics and the mood are great! It is a bit too difficult for me though.. Reminded my of Canabalt for some reason.

airwaffle 2021-04-26 19:37

Really nice aesthetics! Once you got the jellyfish spawned it feels as if you are basically toast, since he will keep on hunting your nightmares (such a damn spawn killer!). Otherwise cool and fun!

pookipoot 2021-04-26 19:41

@cogcomp Thank you! @airwaffle - Yeah I had issues getting enemies to respect their pathfinding boundaries. So after a while, the game just gets absurd and the big jelly fish is a bit broken. I think if I would have started this on Friday or Saturday I could've balanced things better. Thanks for playing!

morphine 2021-04-26 20:22

Reminds me of N+ in a good way. Once you get a hang of the fly+jump it becomes quite enjoyable. Very difficult which is a good thing. Great job!

harrison-dunn 2021-04-26 20:46

I really liked the visuals here. I couldn't tell what was my character at first but the trails made for a really unique look. Good job! I got stuck with the controls a lot. For example, if you go up against a wall, you can't jump. Definitely died a few times because of that.

samguy 2021-04-26 20:47

Cool concept and challenging game, jumping feels a bit off from what I expect and I end up getting stuck on walls a lot

pookipoot 2021-04-26 21:35

@Harrison-dunn @Samguy Thank you! I can't believe I didn't catch that. I think I turned off some physic materials on the walls that kept the char from not getting stuck before. Good catch!

dragonsbeardgames 2021-04-26 21:55

The game looks great. Ran into issues where for some reason my buttons didn't work and couldn't move left or right or jump. But other than that it was fun diving deeper.

phealsout 2021-04-26 22:02

Magnificent game, although it is very difficult not being able to jump when you hit stuff

pookipoot 2021-04-26 22:20

@dragonsbeardgames I think that sometimes occurs when playing in minimized mode? I'm not 100% sure but pressing escape twice should fix it. @phealsout Yeah, that sucks! I'm thinking of building this game out more and fixing a lot of the issues on it. Maybe add some roguelite features to it to give it replayability.

oeschmid 2021-04-26 23:28

I really liked the zoomed out perspective of this game. The jumping was really satisfying, being able to leap over multiple obstacles was a lot of fun.

thewinrawr 2021-04-26 23:42

I love how self-explanatory the title is lol. The game was really fun. I like how zoomed out everything is and the trail effects, it really does feel like you're going super fast. I love falling down especially, because then all of the buildings just blur past you.

I would've added a checkpoint each time you reach a new level, because getting hit once is really punishing. I also doing think walls should halt your momentum completely, because running into one feels pretty bad. Instead, if you hit a wall while jumping, you should just slide up. Finally, it would be really cool if you added a wind sound effect while falling, as well as a camera shake and some more particles when landing from a really big fall. There are a lot of points where you fall from a really big height, so I would've like to see that extra oomph from making a really big jump.

Overall, simple but fun game! I enjoyed playing it.

jdeedubs 2021-04-27 00:03

This game is sleek as hell. I loved the NPC movement; it felt like they were a pack of predators waiting to strike when you were cornered. The jumping motion is really satisfying, and I felt like I had a good amount of control while in the air. The scale of what you jump over is suitably epic. There were a few times where I squeaked through a certain death scenario and felt like a total badass.

10/10 - would get chased by scary sperm again

muzakefron 2021-04-27 00:37

really cool game!!! the enemies were a bit weird cause they were so tiny & random (& kinda just dissapearing for a while after the start) but i loved the aesthetic & how huge the level(s) were!

pookipoot 2021-04-27 01:09

@thewinrawr I appreciate your comment. It reflects actually what I was hoping to get out of the game but didn't have enough time to put (only had one day). I agree with all your suggestions and hope to add them in a future build in a more fleshed out game. Also as an aside, I loved your game!!

@jdeedubs @muzakefron Thank you both for taking the time out to play and comment!

simpathey 2021-04-27 02:37

Great game, I think checkpoints could make it even better

jitspoe 2021-04-27 05:24

Visuals look cool, and the movement in the air is neat. Shame about the collision issues, though. Oh, and the DESTROYING MY INTERNET! :D

venezia 2021-04-27 09:09

Cool game :) The physics took a few seconds to get used to, but then felt powerful after that! The enemies not resetting after death felt a bit off. I died at a deadend pretty deep into level 2, and had to run back from level 1 without seeing an enemy until getting back in level 2. Maybe a checkpoint at the level would have made that feel better. Fun to play through though!

rhoff95 2021-04-28 15:33

Fantastic art style. I really like how zoomed out it feels, which makes it feel like I am moving much faster while still being in control. Gives be vibes of N++. Well done.

simpathey 2021-04-28 16:08

visuals looked great with the zooming out. A few bug fixes (0 friction walls) would make the platforming experience in this game even better!

threeli 2021-04-28 17:50

Okay not going to tread any new ground with the N++ reference here, but I will say more than anything the extremely tight controls made me think of it. I have to ask, was my tiny little guy able to grab on to a ledge and pull himself up? It seemed like that happened once or twice, and if so that's hilarious and awesome.

I'm glad to read that you'll be continuing work on it, I would love to play more!

verbante 2021-04-28 18:39

The feeling of scale in it is amazing

andrewkennedy 2021-04-28 18:44

I was able to make it to Level 2 a couple of times, but the big jellyfish kept ruining my day! I enjoyed zooming around, and the music really added to the frantic feeling of running away from a bunch of enemies.

This was good work, especially for a game done in one day in a new program. Congrats!

sigill 2021-04-28 18:56

I think you are not giving yourself enough credit by calling this "a piece of trash". I didn't get very far/to the end (if there is one) because of collision issues getting me stuck all the time, but I really like the overall idea of the game. The aesthetics are nice, the movement feels like a lot of fun and the music was also pretty decent. If you decide to release an updated, post-jam version that fixes the collision issues (and maybe adds more to the game) I'd definitely want to play it!

spyturtle 2021-04-28 19:01

I liked the fast movement and simple gameplay. You really feel the danger because of the chasing enemies! Nice job!

not-tomo 2021-04-28 19:22

The zoomed out perspective and fast paced movement were really fun! Also found that I could jump off the left side of the screen from the spawn point and fall infinitely into the abyss, which was also fun lol. Would love to see more exploration of this gameplay w/ checkpoints like people have mentioned.

amar-ravi 2021-04-28 19:30

Come on, no way you call this a piece of trash! Its definitely got a "fun" element to it! I think the combination of the floaty jumping and the speed trails sort of gives of this aesthetic of super heroes fighting it out on top of sky scrapers? Its a really cool thing to capture! I did however run into issues with collisions sometimes though and that really sort of breaks the flow. Majority of the jumping and moving around seems fluid so it really stands out when it stops all of a sudden.

osterzone 2021-04-28 19:37

The minimalist aesthetics of this game were gorgeous, and the little music loop added some nice background without getting annoying. The jumping felt a little awkward to me, sometimes you got nowhere and sometimes you were flying. As other people said I also wish there were checkpoints, I got to level 2 but had to put the game down when I died and realised I went all the way back to the start of level 1. It feels really fun when you're going fast, but that makes hitting a dead end or getting the trouble with jumps feel really bad.

adamsmccall 2021-04-28 21:23

That was nice ! I like fast-paced platforming games like that :)

jcmonkey 2021-04-28 22:00

for a very simple art style you put in a nice amount of different elements that made me not even care that the graphics were so simple, and it just worked for the game style.

wizard-sino 2021-04-28 23:29

It was fun at first, but became tedious once one has to repeat all of it over again because one died.

milkwine 2021-04-29 03:58

Enjoyable gameplay, took a bit to get a hang of the jumping controls but it got easier after that. It could definitely use some checkpoints, when I got to level 2 I hoped that would be where I returned if I died.

colapolka 2021-04-29 21:47

I love the movement of the enemies. Kinda reminded me of aggravated wasps. Very unique!

What I didn't love was the fact that you cant jump right in front of walls. It really stopped the otherwise great sense of flow in this platformer. Dunno if it was intentional, but in my opinion it would have fared better without this. Oh, and I found it a bit harsh to be sent back to the very beginning after being caught. Being sent to the start of the level instead of the whole game would have kept me playing for longer.

Bonus points though for style, the super cool music and the insanity that you started all over again an day 2!

felo07 2021-05-01 20:14

Its a good game ideia, but I think is missing content. Graphics and audio are great. You could add some checkpoints in the beginning of each stage, and also. when I try to jump when Im on the side of the tilemap I cant, I think players collision is making it impossible, I need to go back a little bit to jump, and that kills me a few times. But I understand that was a 48h game, and you did good, just few feedacks for the future =)

pookipoot 2021-05-02 01:25

@felo07 @colapolka @milkwine @wizard-sino @jcmonkey @adamsmccall @osterzone @amar-ravi @not-tomo @spyturtle @sigill @andrewkennedy @verbante @threeli @simpathey

Thank you all for your feedback and comments. I just released a patched version that fixed collisions and added some more variants to the game. Though, granted, I think I made it harder? Next patch will have checkpoints.

Can't wait to play all your games (if I haven't already) ! Thanks for taking the time out to play.

Post-jam version can be found here: https://pooki.itch.io/run-from-stuff-v-11

thrawn911 2021-05-06 14:36

The movement feels amazing, but sometimes the player is stuck in one place, and can't jump. Like others said, the game definitely needs some checkpoints (maybe one per level). The camera movement is fantastic.
