the idea and music look pretty cool!

the idea and music look pretty cool!
I love the concept, but all my poems were trash. How do you send more than one verse?, is it posible?
I like the music and the atmosphere of the game but I'm not sure about how to earn points.
Haha @hestrateja I think the bad poetry just has to be part of the charm. You can include verses however you like but the display is just based on the length of the poem. Thanks!
seems really polished -- the music is nice and the animation of your guy rolling out made me laugh out loud when I first saw it (in combination with the awful 'poem' I wrote). However, after a handful of attempts, I can't seem to figure out how to get a score higher than zero..
Nice game! I enjoyed the humor, art and music. The gameplay was a bit confusing as wasn't sure if I was doing well or not.
Really like the music and the art. You could make the text field to a text block
@jamr @refrax295 Thanks for the feedback! I'll try to make the instructions more clear.
Had a fun coming up with rhymes, cool idea!
Loved this game!! Great idea and execution

It failed me on the last one. :P
@john-gabriel Haha you're a true poet!
I got a "So deep" for a poem that actively insulted her.
In the display of wicked royalty /
I bow and moan and swear fealty /
But in the dawning light I see/
A wicked hag in front of me.
@wizard-sino hey some people like that!
great use of the theme! I like the concept a lot :)
The concept is intriguing, but feels like the kind of thing that would work better in a party game with actual humans. (It's a little reminiscent of the Jackbox robot rap battle game.) I'm guessing you're using some kind of natural language tone analysis, which seems just too unreliable to be used like this. Maybe if the game provided more direction up-front, or feedback as to why a poem was "So deep" or "Trash" it would be a little more satisfying to try and figure out how to succeed; as it is, it feels like every poem is a shot in the dark and it doesn't feel nice to be rated as trash for not understanding what the game wants you to do. Also, the princess's prompt poems are tonally all over the place (mine seemed to have a fixation with evil and lice??) which provides even less direction as to how to proceed.
I can't say I cared for the music, but I love the way the protagonist rolls onto the stage to give his poem. And there's something charmingly satisfying about the way he bites his lip in satisfaction when at a "So deep" rating.
@mduo13 Thanks for the feedback! The poem generation mixed with sentiment analysis was definitely tough to tune.
What? I died in the trash bin so early on. What am i doing wrong? Graphics was cute, and guy animation was funny (and blocky)
Interesting concept, not sure what defined a good poem but when I tried to fool it, it seemed to know. Overall pretty cool.
Wow, I wasn’t expecting to face such a challenge xD Really cool game, it really shows how a dumb idea can turn into a wonderful funny experience. Thank you !
fortnite
It's funny but I'm not really sure how to make it work ! However copy/paste what the princess wants seems to do the job some times xD
@ommadawn you found the secret pro strategy
@adumbpotato I think I'm okay with this breaking it. It seems fair.
Such an original idea! Really like the music and the harmony (I'm a pianist). It has a romantic vibe.
Good idea!I didn't find out how to play at first, but later I found that it was really an innovative idea! Although my poems are rubbish (if they can be called poems)
@elmando2333 thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
I enjoyed how funny your game was. You did a great job capturing the theme and tone of what you were going for.
I am so confused how the game recognises how the tone of the poem but i had a fun time messing around with it!
The best part of the game is messing about with the text box and putting random things of it, I wasn't sure what you wanted the player to write because I am not poetic but the concept was pretty cool.
Loved the use of the theme, I was not expecting the rolling animation. It was cool. Music is very nice and the core game loop is simple and has a lot of room to make something bigger, maybe with AI.
Interesting concept. How are you measuring tone? I'd be fascinated to know. Google scholar will be your friend with this stuff. https://scholar.google.co.nz/scholar?q=text+emotion+words+database+narrative+analysis&hl=en&as_sdt=0&as_vis=1&oi=scholart
[Edit... Ok I looked at your source a bit... it seems like you used some kind of text analysis library? Is that right? How does it work?]
Concept is really interesting , sentiment analysis stuff is great for this kind of thing. Felt a bit inconsistent to me even when I was trying to win but I imagine once you "get" it it becomes easier. Would be really cool if this had a two player mode where the person who gets closest in terms of sentiment wins.
@tim77 Thanks! I'm just using a basic sentiment analysis library that assigns a positive or negative value to each word. I can average this accross the poem to give it a "tone" score.
It gave me a little smile before i passed out
Great little game, fun concept and something a little different. Love the music too

Definitely one of the most unique takes on the theme and just in general. Really really love the idea.
Music is good, not too grating after a few loops, would have loved a sims style speech noise.
I truly enjoyed bringing out my inner Shakespeare. Thank you.
I love how the dude rolls into scene :D the concept is great, analyzing user input is really interesting, love the talking voice. Hard to figure out what works though, but it's fun nonetheless when you get the so deep haha.
Bruh!Amazing Game.Your Coding skills have gone up and beyond!Brilliant game dude, have to give it a five.
What a fascinating game. Winning usually just felt random, but it was still amusing.
Very interesting. I'm not a very good poet so I have no idea why I was so deep on some poems and trash on others but if nothing else this game gets high ranks for giving me the mental image of somebody rolling up into a ball and shouting poetry at royalty.
Really cool entry ,such a wise inmplementation.
This is without a doubt the most creative game I've played. It's also really funny. It's kind of hard to determine what to write, but it's fun to try. Great job!
Her poem mentioned being funny so I just replied "haha" and it worked. Great game
I suck at poetry! haha nice graphics tho
Very hilarious game, great job!
This was GREAT. It's my favorite so far, and a refreshing take on the theme. I laughed out loud a few times, from both the animations and the poems. I'm guessing that you randomly chose words and then did sentiment analysis on them, but the generated words were often contradictory (a positive word and then a negative word). That might have been what you were going for, but I found it hard to guess at the ending sentiment score based on, say, 3 positive words and 3 negative words. But overall I really loved how unique this was. Kudos.
@kevinworkman Thanks for the feedback! You guessed right. I think if I were to do it again I might try to create more cohesive poems that just have a more complex structure. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Okay, I spent some time trying to trick the sentiment analysis part, which would normally be quite easy, but without success, I got tired and took a look at the code, I realized my mistakes, you are expecting words that rhyme too and I was caring just about the sentiment of the used words, after that things become very easy haha. Very refreshing submission, +1 cool points.
@luc-creationallabs Thanks for checking it out! I'm happy to hear my tricks intrigued you.
TODO: review game
Good game, execution and a great sense of humor. I had a really good time playing It.
Good one. My poetry is too bad as it seems
I'm guessing there is some sort of thesaurus-looking-up to determine score? Anyway love this game, great job!
Sweet idea for a game, the graphics were nice. I would appreciate some hints or directions at what the algorithm that determines the score is looking for. Perhaps some rounds were it has to rhyme, some were the length has to be right, some were you have to include some words and final one with everything would be awesome?
This is very original.
I would have loved to have a bit more information on why my poems were deep or not (for example by making the princess reacting to them with some answer) but maybe it is too much to ask for 48h work.
Wrote a lot of words and got really deep :) No idea why but I'm obviously a poet. Nice gameplay idea. Good job.
Add robovoicing and it will be a hit :D
I like the attempt to do a natural-language-input game, which isn't something I've seen before (unless you count all the GPT-3-based pseudo-choose-your-own-adventure games out there). But I'm not sure that sentiment analysis is the right tool to use here. It kinda feels like a weird, superstitious guessing game, rather than like I actually have any idea what I'm supposed to be doing.
(To be honest, I'm a bit skeptical about whether sentiment analysis is actually useful for much of anything. It kinda seems like people's go-to choice when they want to "do some NLP" without a clearer idea of what they're actually trying to accomplish.)
Cool Game! really original, im wondering how you measure the poetry, because once i wrote "Im poor at hearth, but i own a cat" and the princess seemed to like that? Great entry, fun to play!
199 score, she didnt like my cry for argentina poem. Sadge, really fun idea. no idea how points are chosen :D
I don't know why she liked some poems, and why she hated others... girls...
Very interesting game! Well done  I'm a really bad poet though haha
Really cool idea! Though it seems hard to figure out what the game wants. Tried rapping a lot.
I got deep on one of mine. This was really creative, I'm not sure I understand how to win but it was fun playing with creating poems.
Interesting take on the theme! :D It took me a while to figure out what I should write, but then it was clear and became long night ;)
I like the background music and it feels good to get so deep!
Fun concept... one that I am no good at! Very interesting take on deeper and deeper. I guess poems are too deep for me!
10/10 would trash my poem again. Fun game i think i am just bad at poems. Still nice art and music tho.
Really interesting idea, as said above this would really fit well in a multiplayer game, competing with each other to see who have the best poems. Well done =D
Text recognition? Poetry writing? Yes please! Once you get the general idea of what the game wants, it becomes a really fun creative writing exercise. There's nothing like player expression. Plus look at that roll. A true alpha move.
funny XD weird but funny
This was really fun but I didn't really get what it wants me to write?
I was ready for this to be terrible, but god I love it xD really well done, I'm very surprised by how well this is executed! my hat is off to you
Funny idea. Cool music. Apparently, I am not a poet :)
It took me a little bit to understand but I got the hang of it. I spent the first 15 minutes throwing out insults or rap lines until it started to click. (FYI The princess is not a fan of Ja'Rule). The rolling in animation makes me laugh everytime.
What I love about LDJam is I would've likely never have played a game like this on Steam. Simple and super humorous. Great job Liam!

My poems sucked but I love the characters, specially the rolling one

Nice, I am not a native speaker but managed a 83 points verse!
I'll look into the code to cheat on the next one!
I really like the concept of the game it is very funnny and it is **so deep**, like the meaning of the poems i wrote.
I was little bit worried about this game but actually I had good time with it:DD Definitely very original mechanic. thank you!
A unique idea for sure! I like the idea of a creative writing game; it's a very different type of challenge compared to what we usually get in games. I will say that it was sometimes hard to parse the mood of the princess's poem since it's just a randomized list of adjectives. Maybe making the princess's poem a question could help prompt the player so they have a clearer starting point when writing. Overall, a wonderfully weird game. Nice work!
I think ppl make this game reater than it is Screenshot_17.png Screenshot_18.png
Your take on the theme is one of the funniest and most creative. The mise en scene is a bit underwelmning, maybe mostly because of the "developper art". I still had fun, would love to have a derpy computer voice read my deep deep deep poetry (even tho I still don't get why it's deep, but I'll take it) !
I have no idea how the game decides what is trash and what is deep. But I had a good laugh, when my first deep and successful poem was literally just "Huh?"
Interesting concept and I like the rolling animation. I didn't really get the hang of pleasing the lady. Copying her poems worked. :)
I like the music and rolling of my character. My poems were so deep
The music and the walking anims were so good. And the poems made me laugh. But I didn't really understand what I was supposed to write... The one time I wrote a poem it was called trash, but whenever I wrote "Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg Bleg" they said I was really really deep. And don't get me wrong- i know I am. That poem is refined af. But like, providing a tad more direction, or some sort of indication of what is and what isn't a good poem will help the player understand a bit better what to say and make the game more engaging!
Fascinating interpretation of the theme. It was really fun trying to figure out what you could and couldn't say. I wasn't able to come up with what else to write in this comment so I just ran everyone else's comments through a summary tool. Here you go: `Good poetry execution and a great superb at humor. I had a really best time playing It.`
i love literally everything about this game
Listen, how is "I've got a big knife for ya" not a good response for her asking for a big big knife?! >: (
Absolutely hilarious though. I love how the player character just rolls in. What a stunner.
10/10 would die alone in a trash can again.
The concept alone is brilliant. I will say, it would've been hilarious to have the music actually be medieval in style, otherwise it seems like the music is just as a constant laugh track to ridicule the moment, which in fairness works, but I'd find a step up to make some effort into the contrast between the setting of the characters, and the speech and poetry our imaginative minds can concoct.
Hilarious game, executed well for a jam. I love the whole style of the art and music. Great job!
I died in a trash can :(. Great concept, and I assume its doing naturaly language processing? Thats really cool and ambitious for a game jam! I love the way your character rolls into the scene.
The free form input makes it kind of hard to figure out what the princess wants to hear. I love the humorous take on the theme and novel idea though! Like another commenter said, I'd love to see this in a multiplayer setting so humans could evaluate each other's humor (Cards against humanity style)
Hilarious little game! I played it thrice, I was once "So Deep" and the other two were bad poems, apparently. Nice take on the theme. Good job :)
Super funny game mi amigo. I never knew I could write sup deep poetry. You have inspired me to be more humorous and unique in future Ludum Dares
i got a so deep from this mario.png
I actually thought of the same interpretation for "deep" but couldn't think of any game mechanics to apply to it. I'm not sure how you pulled it off either (if I did know how, I might actually be able to beat this one).
This is a great concept, although it seems like analyzing the positivity of the words wouldn't be very reliable. I love this interpretation of the theme.
@duncan-3 yeah that checks out
@manan The sentiment analysis is actually pretty solid, I felt like most of the difficulty came in translating sentiment to a score. Thanks for the feedback!
Interesting concept :) Too bad I'm not a poet^^
Cool game and execution of a unique concept.
I genuinely adore this thing! Well done!
This take on the theme was something I considered as well at the start. You, however, maked it work. Kudos!
Nice, took a little peek at your code, great idea)
My poem was bad and I died. 10/10
A little bit confusing at times why some poems were "so deep" while others landed me in the trash can, on the other hand dating is always confusing, so I guess it's spot on! :D Really fun take on the theme, I really enjoyed it!
Not sure how to win the game, but very funny idea XD
@liammasters This was soooo funny. Very humorous. I kept on saying rhythmic whatever, it was soooo deeeep. The combination of words that the princess says is also very funny.
Hey,
The game was nice to play, it reminds me, in a different way, of the "oh sir..."games on steam. But I applause this game, as I had a really good time playing it : thumb up
Очень необычно. Интересно было бы посмотреть на алгоритм, который анализирует стихи.
This game is just crazy! Nver seen a game like that before ?! Awesome concept and content. But too hard for me :P
Maybe I should get back to primary school.
Well done you little poet-grammer!
It is very conceptical, I like the idea of impressing the princess with words
10/10 trashbin here I come again! Brilliant!
Nice idea but now you make me think I should not become a poet, my score proved it XD
Hilarious. Had me laughing how he just rolls on in. I also suck at poetry. Cool idea!
really amazing sentiment chat bots as a game haha - so fun!
This girl is complicated! After many beautiful poems that she threw in the trash I understood what she really expected!
imsodeep_poem.png
Great submission ! It's a lot of fun
I like the concept and the implementation ! Goob job !
EXCELLENT HAHA ! so funny game, with cute little music and nice concept, so love when the player come to face of princesse X)
It is definitely super innovative as a concept. I fooled around with the AI with different kinds of poetry and different keywords, but it seems to know when I'm doing that. Honestly, that's so cool. Overall, that's the highlight of it, the way it feels like it's doing the impossible and actually reading my (albeit bad) poetry.
Everything else is charming. Obviously, it can use polish, but the core loop works and it works well!
hahahah I had a great laugh playing your game! But I have one question: how does this piece of treasure work?? Please don't say that a random number generator decides my faith :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
The music and graphics are nice too, it suits the game very well. Also, how the main character "rolls" up the screen as a baboon is just priceless haha
Well done sir!
@wouter52 No rng, I'm not that cruel. It's using sentiment analysis to try to judge the similarity. Only randomness is in the poem generation. Thanks for the feedback!
@liammasters wouw that is so cool! So there is actual logic behind it too! That makes it even more impressive
Hilarius I loved it. Rolling animation is a great touch!
so i'm a trash :(
Fun take on the theme, and a bit confusing game. It made me smile. Well done!
I DON'T KNOW WHY BUT I WAS LAUGHING SO MUCH PLAYING IT! Truly wonderful and unique experience. I think it's mostly because of the mysterious algorithm behind it. I had no idea how it works, nor understood the words in the "instructions", but still enjoyed writing random stuff, and getting a "Soo deep" after that was satesfiing. Music also brought me a good upbringing mood. All in all, very glad I've tried this
that's a 5/5 for humor, for sure also very clever theme approach
I have no idea what I was doing or supposed to be doing, but it made me smile a lot :D
:heavy_check_mark: The original approach to the theme is definitely the best element here! Not to dismerit the rest of it, tho.
Even if it's programmer art, it matched really well with the sunset and the soundtrack to create a nice atmosphere.
:x: My main issue with the game is the same I always have with those whose main mechanic revolve around language: it's (*obviously*) bound to a single language, meaning it's a bit alienating for non-native english speakers. Even when fully understanding the language, it's just not the same. I'm not sure I'm making my point clear
Nice game! I like the idea of it and the art looks nice.
Fun idea. I enjoyed the music. Would have liked a little more randomness or change throughout the experience but I made silly poems which was cool.
Cool idea.
Funny concept -- was really hoping for some wise AI banter here... but I accept the "SO DEEP" thumbs up as well :)
So you made a game where I'm just supposed to say silly things and laugh at myself? It worked. sodeep.png
I don't think I've ever played a poetry simulator before. I can now say that I have, and I have to admit, I kinda want more of them. Really brilliant interpretation of the theme, great execution, very impressive.
it was good fun and a fresh idea
Good work! I enjoyed the simple relaxing music and although the graphics are by no means "high-fidelity" they hold a certain old flash game charm that I can't help but enjoy. I also like that you made it humorous as well (rolling animation got me and the So Deep! is also pretty funny).
The core gameplay is quite interesting and innovative (also a bit ironic because our entry is also about poetry to impress a character lol). However, I don't really feel it is very well explained what earns you points. Maybe I'm too good at poetry but every time I tried I got a "So Deep!" by just providing something that rhymes and vaguely matches the context. I do like the idea though, it just needs more actual "game" to it, as now there is not really a win condition or any clearly communicated challenge (since I don't really know what makes the poems good or bad).
Overall, really fun idea and impressive execution on a technical level, just wish there was more to it, but that's for a potential post-jam version. Good work!
Funny concept, though i had no idea what i was doing :P
I loved the art, music and concept! However, despite my best efforts, I wasn't able to figure out how to score.
Funny game but i honestly had no idea what i was doing or what the game was looking for. i wish the instructions were more detailed as it looked promising
Loved how the character rolled into the screen, gave me a good chuckle. One of my poems was just "Bruh" and it worked, truly a marvelous game!
"So deep" Capture.PNG
Poem worked in Japanese too. Impuressibu!
Great concept. I now know that I am, in fact, very deep.
It's a fun short conceptual experience ! love the rolling animation to make our entrance
So many fun little details. Absolutely brilliant concept and stupid graphics in the best possible way. Love it.
This is incredibly funny, I'm very bad at rhyming but I enjoyed it solely for the NPCs.
Thanks for the laughs!
This is a very funny game, it made me laugh for half an hour. Brilliant idea and excellent implementation, 5/5!
This game is pretty funny, but it's very difficult to tell what you're supposed to do to get a good rating! Is it random? I won with "Wow! Cow!" once.
Fun concept if you're good at poetry which I'm not XD Nice work !
Wow that really made me use my brain ! - Fun concept - really innovative - I am guessing you used some natural language processing which is really cool - humor was some of the best ive seen in the whole jam
Great job!
interesting idea! apparently you can just keep winning by repeating her exact poem lol
Wow I really didn't expect this. Very innovative. I tried to kind of break it by writing words that rhyme without sentences. It didn't really work which I was impressed by. I started by taking one of her words like Daring for example and just putting it in the sentence.
Daring more like. Caring.
What I found interesting is the next time she talked she used the word Caring.
Then I put in.
Caring more like. Daring.
and this time it failed instead of succeeding.
Then I decided to just put an f in over and over. I quickly noticed this was still yielding wins at about a 1/3 ratio. Just to make sure it wasn't some word processing that had to do with the letter I tried again with a period. Same results.
I realized the comment above mine is also true. If you type her exact sentence in you always win. That is the only method I've found to win 100% of the time. But I didn't find something that fails 100% of the time.
Even things like $$$ or 43215823457 or $234$$# Seemed to succeed in some situations.
Very curious what the logic behind this is. It feels like it's just random to be honest, but the thing with her own sentence always working makes me wonder.
Really fun concept, and clever implementation of the theme! Still a bit confused about the scoring system though.
interesting concept!
I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do so my poems would be liked. Interesting idea though.
Very interesting concept! I came up with a few good poems before I died alone in the trash, haha. Super unique game, art and music are all well done. Never seen something like this before, well done!
Really creative and fun game. Great concept and scope for a jam. Well done!
Nice! This is kind of like my game but better.
Very interesting idea to use sentiment analysis + basic NLP in the game! For one moment I thought you were using something based on deep learning (got it, DEEP learning). Just imagine what will be possible with GPT-3 and other large language models! Btw, I love how the protagonist gets in the screen, lol.
I have no idea how you score the poems, but this is a really cool, novel and funny idea! At least some of my poems worked though  Also great music!
1.PNG 2.png
You sire, just blew my mind. I definitely will need to take a look at your source code to see, how you handled and managed parsing and scoring those poems - but this was one hell of a ride.
