There is some great mood and ambiance with this game.
However, I think the gameplay is lacking considerably. The pacing is just too slow, and the stamina bar depletes very quickly and then takes forever to come back. This wouldn't be a huge issue, but when you have a walking simulator with low-action points for days, you need to make sure the player doesn't feel like it's a chore.
Graphics were really fun though ! When everything was hitting its stride, it was very enjoyable.

The creepy sfx and fog are great for the mood! The footsteps less so. But great idea!
It was actually pretty scary at times. I think the amount of walking could be toned back, like a lot. But you got me a few times with a scare! Lol! Nice entry.

I'm usually not a fan of scary games, but have to say that I did enjoy the game overall. Atmosphere was great. I think walking/steps sound effect was too loud and repetitive though and harmed the athmosphere a bit. Also the fact that stamina doesn't recharge when you're walking also was a small negative.

Nice mood. A bit too slow paced for a game jam and the footsteps...
I just walked backwards-facing the whole time and it kind of broke the game! But nice overall look and mood! Pace was a bit too slow, I think the events are just a bit too far apart.

This was actually super scary at points. I did get a bit frustrated with the sprint mechanic and mouse control but overall a really cool vibe!

@omid-ghavami The tree dudes are proximity activated (so they don't show up for no reason), did you just walk into the hills or did you follow the path?
@alexjdg what was wrong with the mouse controls? I made a promise last Jam to have control settings did I miss an option that you like?
I see a tendency here that I messed up on the empty path length and the footstep volume. I will rebuild the web version (with a disclaimer) to start you of on the crossroads and add a footsteps volume slider. I value your time and ears that can be spent on other games.

@voidsay The mouse being inverted was very strange, and the scaling of the mouse movement when you move diagonally was a bit weird, nothing major though. The general feel of the game was really nice, you really managed to create an ambience!

@alexjdg OK regarding the diagonal movement I'll have to check again, but inversion is an option that you most definitely can adjust.
It's scary to play!)) Good luck in compo!

Really enjoyed the graphics and overall theme on this. You did a really good job putting together a cohesive theme and style. Also dude, I was definitely spooked when I ran into the first monster. Great job!

THe ambience is the best of the game. Really creepy

Cool. I liked it.
Really nice ambient and theme idea! I found the time you past walking a little bit too big but overall pretty good game. Also the camera movement was inverted by default.
I tried this but when I heard the first scary noise I panic-turned it off. So, I guess it worked? I get so scared so easily :grimacing: lol great work.

I really struggled with the mouse control. Didn't know you could invert it until I came here and read the comments. I looked for it in the controls menu tab when I was playing, but didn't realize it was under options. I went back and played around with it a bit more and it felt better. The look, feel, mood, artstyle are all great. The gameplay wasn't really for me.

@kristinamay do not fear the spoopy noise, you need to fear the sound of twigs breaking, because that is when they start moving. Personal tip for scary games: If you are too scared to play try dieing on purpose. When you know what is coming it lowers the tension drastically. I used to be scared all the time as well, but it is better now. On a side note, I made these bastards, but they still manage to startle me.
@venezia oh, it didn't occur to me that people would only look in controls not options. I will make a mental not for next time.

Nice game there! I really appreciate that even though it is compo it has menu with options, custom cursor and other details. Well done! Graphics are also pretty cool and atmosphere... scary just how i like it ;) I really enjoyed it thank you and Good job!
Awesome mood!
I think we're faster if we run, stop when stamina is depleted, and then run again rather than walking.
I reminded me a game that a friend of mine did for the hauntedps1 demo disc: https://khamelot.itch.io/the-salt-order It involves the same gameplay mechanics.
Anyway, it's a very solid COMPO entry, good job!
The ambience is great (sound, look and feel). Once I setup the controls, I was able to play it more smoothly. I lost my sense of direction, maybe find a way to highlight the path better (like flowers or small animals runing into or away from the target). I enjoyed it.

@bastienre4 please don't tell him that I have been watching a streamer play his demo before making this :^) My legal team (that I keep in the cage for a reason) would like to point out that this is a legally distinct game of the "low rez foggy forest weeping angel tree monster" genre (extremely common I know) both in artistic nature, gameplay and story.
But in all seriousness when I saw Salt Order I wondered if I could pull off something similar in a jam. It'd take me another day to make the salt, but that wasn't the goal anyway. I think I'm getting the hang on imitation next we'll be doing some innovation.

Great ambience! Actually a bit scary - good job for achieving that in 48 hours!
Good job making this in 48h, I read all the comments above and I think all the things that I have noted were already been pointed so nothing else to say, and good job for the entry =D

This looks very nice. Got a Nintendo DS kinda aesthetic going on. Wish it was a little more polished, but I really think you could finalize this and make it into a full game in the future.

Did a lot of walking, then found an axe, but I already had an axe.
Nice atmosphere, would have liked to go to the hunted forest.
Good sir~ excelent game, the only thing to note was that the torch was a little confusing, I thought it to be the thing to pick up or so, but when looking down I encountered a bug where the enemy would slide towards me while in my view. Love the weeping angel idea though, my god I was paranoid :P excelent

Excellent mood and cool setting, however unfortunately playing with mac trackpad inverted up and down and made it really hard to navigate around the game world. I was also unaware that I could sprint which made things much harder.

@landerack I had to make the "not visible by camera" detection imperfect, because these buggers wouldn't come close enough and killing you at that distance would feel wrong. I agree with your critique regarding visual guides. It's just that I couldn't come up with one.
@zfert TIL that users would rather suffer than go to the options and change the default setting. I'm starting to think about rebuilding the entire thing again just so you guys stop being menaces to yourself.
@voidsay even outside of that, excelent work :) the atmosphere was awesome ^^

Oh booyyy that was scary! (I know I'm easily scared but I wanted to give it a go). Every death made me jump as hell ahah. I will join the others for the speed, but I liked the overall athmosphere. Thank you for putting all the options, the mouse axis (inverted) are really a plus!
Holy mood axe man! I love the PS1 style graphics and the sheer terror they provide with the low visibility and fog. Seriously had me on edge the whole hike, great work!

I love the Dr Who - Wheeping Angels mechanism. Really well executed! The mood is awesome and the graphics work perfect with it.
Great game!

The mood is fantastic. Love the fog and some of the SFX. THe footsteps feels a bit out of place :)

good job setting the mood of this game! I got lost a whole lot, I wish there was some more land marks that I could latch onto. especially around the burnt forest area. Over all good entry tho!

At first, I had to search a bit before I found the way I had to go, but after that, it was straightforward to play.
The mood was good. It was carried for a large part my the mist layer and wind sounds, but to great effect.
I never felt the need to use the axe, since I could simply sprint past the scary trees. That felt a bit like a wasted mechanic.
Other than that, there was not very much action, making it almost feel a bit like a walking simulator, but the game ended before it got boring.

Nice project. Pixelated graphic and fog is definitely contributing to creepy mood. Very impressive for the compo game. Great job!

Loved the graphics and core mechanic, threw me into the mood real quick.
Felt the use of the axe wasn't well implemented, but the texts and spooky level design played out amazingly!
Good luck!
Really great game, moving trees looked very nice. As I am honestly not into horror games, I could not finish it - I stopped at dead man with a torch and shut the game down after another scary tree killed me :P There are a few misspelling in subtitles - axt instead of axe.

really great atmosphere! i was genuinely terrified! it's funny because recently i've been thinking about making a game sort of in this vein and when i got dropped into the world i was like "hey this is like what i've been wanting to do!" :)

Overall a very creepy game with very dense atmosphere. The creepiness is weightend by your chosen graphics. The Axe itself was not always necessary but fun to use anyhow!
Reminds me a lot of the Slender games back when they were all the craze!
