LD39 — Running out of Power

Azrellian Asteroid Field by KunoNoOni 2017-08-02T01:32:36Z

Nice, a fun take on a classic arcade-style game. The control for the ship felt tight, when I finally hit an asteroid, it was definitely my fault and not the controls. I wasn't a huge fan of the pixel art mixed with non-pixel assets, but I understand the need to in a time crunch like this. Overall, good work, and thanks for making this!

E.M.P. by TheMadStrauss 2017-08-01T21:25:44Z

Really well done, the graphics and sound were strong, and I didn't find any bugs. I wasn't a huge fan of the gameplay, I know the ridiculous puzzles are a staple of adventure games, but it was really hard to tell what might help with what, which led me to just trying everything. For what it is though, it's put together so nicely, with great polish and a fun story. Thanks for building this game!

Portals and Boxes by Luis Giron 2017-08-02T06:32:51Z

This is cute! I think you've got an interesting main mechanic, though I do wish the boxes moved a little faster as you pushed them. A few more levels to slowly bring up the difficulty and teach things to the player would be appreciated, but time crunch always takes it's toll during jams, so I do understand. Graphics and music worked well together, really great job. Thanks for building this!

Wired Game by zzq 2017-08-01T21:42:57Z

Nice take on the puzzle platformer idea! Unfortunately, I really struggled with the controls... the jumps were a pain, especially in areas with low ceilings, and controlling the plug at the end of the wire was extremely difficult, so I often felt frustrated. With a little more time and polish though, this could be an awesome little web game, or something similar. Thanks for sharing and jamming!

On/Off by ThePelranthean 2017-08-02T01:21:57Z

I like the idea of using your power to bring the world to life, I think with some more iterations on that idea you could form it into something really awesome! The clipping was a bit annoying, and the game was on the short side, but I think it's got potential. Good job on the look too, i like the simple neon aesthetic when things are powered. Thanks for building this!

FIZZLE by djfariel 2017-08-01T04:17:16Z

Liked this! The art and sound and gameplay come together to make a solid, cohesive whole. The one issue I found (and one I had with my game too) is that the exploration meant a lot of wandering around, unsure of where to go. A map or guide system would be greatly appreciated. Overall though, I had fun with my time playing, so great work! Thanks for jamming!

Get to the Bunkah by jonathan-turner 2017-08-01T22:36:47Z

Nice collection of minigames! I found the short-circuited wire one to be the hardest, I'm no good at key locations. I think with a little more time to tie these together more, it would greatly improve the game, and maybe fleshing out the minigames a little more wouldn't hurt either. Well done on the looks and sound though, loved the happy tone of the bunker vs. the intense tone as you start pedaling your bike for power. Thanks for participating in the jam!

A Shocking Discovery by Conrad Etherton 2017-07-31T22:07:57Z

Love the art, and the physics of the kite swooping about and sometimes tugging at your character is great. It was really hard to tell if I was doing things right though, I didn't really notice if the population bar ever slowed its dropping, and there wasn't any sound or feedback that I was doing well/poorly. A beautiful little game that just needs a bit extra polish. Thanks for making this!

Are You Sure You Want To Send That? by grandtheftmarmot 2017-08-03T19:10:01Z

This was fun, I liked that you took a really simple game mechanic and then built something entertaining around it instead of over-engineering the gameplay. Thanks for making this!

RESISTANCE by azlen 2017-08-20T21:22:55Z

This is an ambitious project, and I applaud you for adding proc-gen to a jam game. That being said, I don't think it adds much to the play experience in it's current incarnation. The bugs (including the tile placement) really kept this game from making an impression on me. Though the gameplay left me cold, I thought the look of the game was solid, and the sound pulled it's weight too. Thanks for putting this together and sharing!

0|0|0|0 by infinitycore 2017-08-01T22:01:39Z

A cool take on a classic game idea. I like the idea of everything costing power, but I wish there was a little more to do to force some more decisions about what to spend power on. Also, my clicking finger got very tired very quickly. it looked sharp and sounded great though, so well done! Thanks for making and sharing this.

HackBot by gene-z 2017-08-01T23:36:58Z

Nice, I had fun with this! The graphics and music were on point. The zapping sound effect was a little grating though, and the hit detection made it a little hard to more around easily. The AI for the baddies was cool too, though I wish it was a little more predictable so I could better plan around avoiding them! Thanks for building this for the jam!

Leonardo Montes' DUNKIRK by Repusv 2017-08-01T20:55:17Z

Very cool, those planes all look sharp! I struggled some with the controls (even on a 360 controller), but I've never been much of a pilot in videogames anyways. Well done getting so much into the game with so little time, and thanks for participating!

Don't be (the) patient by Sogomn 2017-07-31T15:52:52Z

This is a cool little game with some nice pixel art! I really wish there was a greater sense of progression, either breaking the number of icons-per-match into individual levels, or giving you less and less time as you went. There may also be a bug, as when I was finished playing, I left the game running and stopped matching the shapes, but did not get a game over after a couple of minutes. Thanks for participating!

Burnup Blade by DragonZBW 2017-07-31T22:33:23Z

This is a cool game. I like the controls, and the animations are phenominal, great job! My main issue was that the hit-detection on enemies is so unforgiving, I often felt like I was swinging at enemies right in front of me and missing while they had no trouble striking back. In addition, the camera felt a little close, I didn't have much time to react to enemies rolling at me. Just a few tweaks and this could be something quite fun! Thanks for participating and building this game!

Don't let running out of power by dcrdro 2017-07-31T17:39:58Z

Fun concept, I like that you fit a lot of different enemies into your game! I really would have liked it if the attack felt stronger, if I could tell where it hit, and if I was doing damage. Thanks for participating!

Output by clutterArranger 2017-07-31T17:48:15Z

I'm a big fan of citybuilder/sim games, so this is right up my alley. It took a bit to fully understand the ui, but I think this is a great proof of concept for something bigger (either pushing it more into the puzzle genre, or further into the citysim). Thanks for making this!

Digit Commando by Wispeh 2017-07-31T17:03:35Z

This is a rad concept, I like it! You've got solid pixel graphics too. I think just more polish and iteration on the gameplay is all it would take to make this into something really cool, as it's a bit simple right now. Thanks for participating!

Eomro by Bookworm31 2017-08-01T04:24:17Z

Tried to play, but when I run it, I get a big map screen, and nothing else. Tried all the listed keys, and didn't get any results.

The Berserker by PlexusDuMenton 2017-08-01T03:39:07Z

Got the game to run just fine here with the new files! I found the hit detection on my dashes were a little bit off, it was hard to tell when I was going to do damage or not, and I would have loved some more feedback (maybe from audio) about when I was taking damage or hurting enemies. That said though, I like the random enemies and the ramping difficulty of them, cool to see the game scale up with you. Thanks for making this!

Evil Lab: the Profane Enlightenment by kazuo256 2017-08-01T03:10:10Z

I played with headphones and had a spooky time. The sound and mood sell this game so well! However, some of the mechanics were a little confusing and clunky to interact with at first. I didn't understand what the percentage on screen was at first, so maybe a little clearer example or explanation of your power bank vs. your light power. But with just a bit of tweaking and time, this could be a phenominal scary little game! Great job, thanks for building this for the jam!

Ed in his green vehicle by Fedor 2017-08-01T20:45:21Z

Nice work taking the plunge into Unity, hope we'll get to see more from you in the future. Fun little game, I think my main complaint was that the random spawning of the fuel canisters seemed the biggest determiner of how high a score I got. It looks sharp though, and sounded good, so thanks for sharing this!

Captain Quark and the Search For More Power by LordKawaii 2017-08-20T21:07:57Z

Asteroids is a classic favorite of mine, so good pick for a jumping-off point! I liked the look of the game (though the ship maybe could have used a little more work), and the sound did it's job too. Overall, I was confused if there was more to it... I started with a full energy bar, and didn't seem to be able to 'warp' no matter what I did. I basically stayed at full power the whole time, and eventually died from collisions. Overall, I thought it was a well made Asteroids game, but I was definitely craving something more. Thanks for building this for the jam, and keep up the good work!

Gargoyle's Curse by Rombus 2017-08-02T02:04:56Z

Haha, what a fun concept for a game. I liked it, even though it was very challenging. Graphics and sounds worked great together, I'll really have to try Pico8 sometime. Fantastic job, thanks for making this and sharing it!

Mayor on a Roll by maniacanshul 2017-08-02T07:25:37Z

I liked this. Very appealing visual style, and I think the music went along well with it. The game itself felt a little simple, but I still had fun dashing about and stealing like a madman. Also glad to finally be able to give out some humor stars. Thanks for making this and sharing it!

PowerLessWorld by Marc Grabow 2017-08-04T05:04:49Z

This is very cool, and definitely the best execution of a management style game this jam. It's a lot to take in for someone just picking it up, and the lack of tutorial hurts, but once you get over that hump, I had fun with it.

One of the strange things for me was that I developed a strategy that seemed to work quite well, and then just proceeded to execute that one by one for each new city I got in contact with. In a large game, that would have bothered me, but for a shorter jam game, it actually felt quite satisfying. 'Haha, I've got it figured out, and it led me to victory!' Just something to think on if you ever plan to expand on this project. Thanks for building it!

On a sidenote, you asked if my game, Automated Explorer, was going to get a web version. At first, I did not think so, but I was able to solve my HTML5 performance issues, so if you are still interested, feel free to come back and check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/automated-explorer

Exodus: Fleet Commander by Saithir 2017-07-31T17:15:53Z

I'm a big fan of any game that involves managing a fleet, very ambitious for 48 hours! I think my comments will just be things you already know, but more time to get some of those other systems in place would really flesh the game out, and a stronger ui that keeps the player appraised of when ships come back, what they found, etc. Thanks for participating and working on this cool project!

Out of Power by cpv 2017-07-31T22:26:08Z

I love the blocky graphics, looking good! I wish there was more to the gameplay, but definitely looking sharp. Thanks for making and sharing this!

Escape The Power by Fawaz.Strawberry 2017-08-01T23:28:46Z

This was fun! It took me a minute to get used to the control scheme, but then I had fun doing each fight. Thanks for making this!

Energizing Mini Quest by hoogmin 2017-08-01T03:59:34Z

Nice work on this little collect-a-thon! I liked your big spike walls, but if I had one thing to say, it would be that a little more variety in the obstacles would have added some extra spice to the game. I'm glad the difficulty wasn't too high, I got to enjoy my romp though this game. Thanks for building it!

Fat Jack's Fun Run by kippllo 2017-07-31T16:25:14Z

I like the 3D pixel art style you went with, very cool. It was a little hard to see what was going on with my character blocking vision to what I was about to run into, and I found the end fight to be kind of buggy, but otherwise a nice little runner. Thanks for participating!

Back Home by Simone 2017-07-31T19:41:48Z

Very good looking game, and the sound and music fit well with it! The mechanics of shooting were a bit rough (very hard to actually hit what you wanted!), but there was a lot of ideas for 48 hours. Thanks for building this and participating!

LD-39 - Cyborg Mattness by Rost 2017-08-20T21:15:31Z

Overall, I just had trouble keeping up with the pace of the game. Before I knew what was going on or how to play, there were already enemies everywhere. I think a bit more time for the player to learn the game, along with a lower ramp up of difficulty could turn this into something mushc more promising. Thanks for building this for the jam!

My Dear Battery by Diego Manarim 2017-08-20T20:59:34Z

A simple little clicking game, works for me! The sound and graphics mesh well together, but I think I just crave something more from the gameplay. I lasted 60 seconds, at which point there were so many enemies on screen that I dropped from near 100% to 0 in just a few seconds, and I think a little more ramping of variety instead of pure difficulty would do well for this game. Thanks for building this and submitting it to the jam!

HockeyGame by Steven Adams 2017-08-02T01:56:02Z

I love that this is multiplayer, even though I didn't have any friends to test with. Knowing my friends though, we would have had a blast with this. My only real complaint is that the theme doesn't seem to fit at all, which is too bad, but the game itself is rad. If you added different arenas and custom rulesets, this could really be a fun game to pull out with friends around! Thanks for building this and participating!

PowerGem Arena by Wizard.Exe 2017-08-02T05:31:24Z

This is a great arcade-style shooter, I dig it. The art and sounds worked well together and gave the game a cohesive whole that I appreciated. The controls felt responsive, and the mechanics really leaned on you to always be trying to refill that power meter. I think my biggest issue was the enemy spawns, which often felt like they were right on top of me while I was trying to keep moving. This was a small point though, and I happily played several rounds to try to get a little further. Great work, and thanks for jamming!

Car jump by Samuli Salonen 2017-07-31T22:52:25Z

Hoo boy is that rocket car tricky to control! A fun game, with some cool features. I love that you can attach your own engines, I just wish they would persist from one jump to the next so I didn't have to re-add them every time. Otherwise, nice to blow through stuff and crash a bunch, thanks for making this!

RedLight by doorless 2017-07-31T17:29:30Z

A very moody and atmospheric game, I really liked the palette, the music, the whole feel of it! That being said, I didn't get very far because it is so hard to see what's going on, and is difficult to control. I think this could be really cool with some more time to tune the mechanics. Thanks for participating!

Satellite Suicide Burn by Kimitama 2017-07-31T16:07:04Z

Very cool looking game, and I like the mechanics for controlling the satellite. Overall though, I found trying to play frustrating. It took me a couple of tries just to figure out what direction I needed to go with the satellite, and then I found the obstacles incredibly numerous and very hard to avoid with any regularity. I had to skip both levels after being unable to beat them. Regardless, thank you for participating!

Magic Power by Egor Piskunov 2017-08-01T21:53:23Z

Nice, these sorts of action games are always fun, and I really liked the energy mechanic and tying it into the theme. I felt that the hit detection was pretty shaky, and it was very hard to tell if a blast would hit an enemy or not, which got frustrating. Nice work on having a bunch of different enemy types though, it was great that they each behaved a little different and gave each area's fight it's own flavor. Great work, thanks for sharing!

Automated Explorer by Aircraft Terrier 2017-08-01T03:27:58Z

Thank you to everyone who has played, reviewed, and commented!

@edmond00 Thank you!

@omnipotentindie Thank you for the kind words. Sorry for the bullet troubles, looking at some of the challenges after the fact, I definitely went a little overboard!

@brandon-diaz Sorry about the crashing, but thanks for sticking with it!

@raogs Thank you!

@pixelgriffin Sorry for the rough experience after the first 5 minutes. In retrospect, I think a simple map feature to help keep track of where you have or have not been would greatly help in locating additional upgrades and power-ups. Thank you for sticking with it as long as you did!

@zelos Thank you so much for the kind words. I have a lot of nostalgia for the Gameboy too, so I'm glad you got the same feeling!

@quixx Thank you, good to hear it gave you some nice gameboy feels!

@johnnydalvi Thanks for playing, and for the good feedback! I realized near the end that what I started as a simple game ended up having a lot of hotkeys, so I think you're spot on with the '?' idea. Did not realize about that bug either, I'll have to tweak that for the future.

@samuli-salonen Thanks you!

@jimbly Thanks for playing! The armor upgrade only affects the Miner (drone 3), sorry for any confusion! Even with the upgrade, it's still tricky though, I think that particular challenge might have been scaled a bit too high.

Automated Explorer by Aircraft Terrier 2017-08-01T05:29:18Z

@marc-grabow I built with the intention of having an HTML5 version available on the web, but the performance makes the game pretty unplayable, so I don't think I'll be able to have any web versions. Sorry!

Automated Explorer by Aircraft Terrier 2017-08-01T23:17:56Z

Thank you to everyone who continues to play, rate, and offer feedback!

@marc-grabow I don't have a web version, but I have repackaged the game in a zip format. Friends of mine have reported a similar problem to yours, and the zip file seems to have fixed it. If you're still interested, please try it and let me know!

@rigdonware Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

@mactinite Thank you for playing, and I totally understand if the restarting mechanic didn't work for you. I'm already thinking up some quality of life upgrades I could do to make it more palatable in the future.

@xel Thanks for taking the time to play, and I agree with you both myself. Hopefully a post-jam version will smooth out the issues with the middle of the game.

@hadesfury Thank you for playing, I'm glad it was fun!

@filippy I built the cheat just for testing purposes originally, but I know how it is to get stuck in a jam game when you want to be doing lots of reviews! I felt it was only right to let people cheat a bit if it made the experience better for them. Thanks for playing!

@clutterarranger Ah, that note about the teleporters will definitely go on my to-do list! I bet even just a weak blinking light on them would be enough to attract some more attention to the ones you can interact with. I'll see if I can get some numeric values for your power too. Thanks for the feedback!

@cpv Thank you!

@repusv Thank you for playing!

Wayside : A world awaits you by TheCodeFactory 2017-07-31T16:52:43Z

Nice simple graphics and a pretty soundtrack too! I also would have liked an indication of how much power a jump would take before making it. The control scheme and physics for jumping were good, but I think needed a little polish to get the feel just right. Thanks for participating!

Last Hyperjump by Christoffer Krakou 2017-07-31T19:30:16Z

Short but sweet! The controls felt great, just right for this kind of game, and the sound and music fit very well. I just want more of it, thanks for making this game and participating.

Cheetah Power by shabap 2017-08-01T21:03:48Z

Cool little game I love the core hunting mechanics of stealthing close, then sprinting to catch, well done! I think I struggled most with getting feedback from the game. After I killed my first gazelle, I couldn't tell if I was eating or not, there was an animation, but I didn't see my food stores go up. It was a lovely looking savanna to spend a little time sprinting around in though, so thanks for making and sharing this!

Industria by rb2750 2017-08-01T04:43:30Z

Love the concept for this game. Unfortunately, I had a tough time with it, and I don't think I ever quite got the hang of how to produce power consistently, which led to me feeling unsatisfied and confused. I totally understand the struggle of diving into Unity though, so congrats on taking the plunge, and I hope you'll feel more confident from now on! Thanks for making this!

Qwik by Sno0w 2017-08-01T03:48:55Z

This was fun! There's a lot of satisfaction in a nice simple racing game like this. The 3D models were plain, but the lighting effects and the soundtrack really sell that neon aesthic. The only complaint I would have is that the controls were a bit hard to get used to, a lot of buttons all together in one spot made it tricky to position my hands well. Thanks for participating, and building this cool game.

Low Power - Energy Management RTS by 3mpty 2017-07-31T16:41:27Z

Ahh, what a great idea for a game! I love the little 3D buildings, and the overall idea for a tower defense/RTS style game is great. I wasn't a fan of continuing to get attacked during my build phase, when I'd really like to focus on just reading the cards and making good decisions. Overall, I think it's a cool game that just needed a little more polish on some design aspects to really shine!

Ocean Commotion by Porkeh 2017-08-02T04:32:46Z

I'm a fan of the concept here, and am impressed you went for random levels. The tricky controls and numerous enemies were tough to deal with though, and I didn't see a lot of connection to the theme either. This could turn into something really cool with some more time and polish though! Personally, I'd love to see some health pickups to make it easier to recover from low health. Thanks for putting this together for the jam!

Bequeath by Spyboy 2017-07-31T21:50:12Z

Big fan of this concept, it's got the most important thing for a game, it's just fun to keep playing. I bet with more time to flesh out the aesthetic side of it, this'd be a real gem. Thanks for making it and participating!

Tank Empty by JSMCAG 2017-08-02T18:48:19Z

I dig the classic top-down racer style. The sound was good, though I think the fuel pickup sound was a little long, and the graphics all fit with each other. I think my main issue was the random movement of the other cars. There was just no way to predict where or when they might move, so it just seemed like chance if I got struck or not. The game played quick, and I played a few rounds really easily in the time I might play another jam game once. Thanks for building and sharing this!

RulesQuest by Adrien Dittrick 2017-07-31T22:01:35Z

Very cool to do an action RPG, I dig it. Unfortunately, the game ran extremely slowly for me, making everything from combat to collecting items rather tedious. I think with more time to tweak the stats/gameplay (or maybe even just optimize the code a little more for less slowdown), this would be a great webgame! Thanks for making it and sharing it.

Exodus by Astrojone 2017-08-01T22:55:05Z

Nice! I like this start you've gotten on the game, it's looking and sounding very good so far. I only wish we had gotten to see some more mechanics for the game, but I understand with the limited time. The story is solid, glad to hear you want to keep going with it, so thanks for bringing this to the jam!
