Nice simple art style. It would be nice to have some indication of the power that you will have after making a jump before you release the mouse button. I like the fade outs and how fluid the game play is.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD39 → Wayside : A world awaits you

Nice simple art style. It would be nice to have some indication of the power that you will have after making a jump before you release the mouse button. I like the fade outs and how fluid the game play is.
Nice Game :) I really liked the graphics style.
This was an awesome little game! Really liked the art style and the basic mechanics!
Fun game! like the graphics
Very nice game, brilliant art style and incredible audio. Very innovative too, great job. Only bug is the thing where dots are in the old position of the player when the player is in the air, could be fixed by just disabling them.
I like it. It reminds me a bit of super meat boy. I agree with the indicator on how much power you have before you let go of the mouse button. Otherwise it's a fun game.
Clever game. Nice level design, simple look with a nice interface!
That was a fun game! I enjoyed it a lot. The art was really good too, so was the music!
You picked a Super Meat Boy's style, that you knew that worked and made it better.
Really enjoyed the game, remembers me a lot of super meat boy, although I prefer the controls this way with the mouse.
The art is simple but delivers a very good experience as well as the jumping physics.
I see no downsides here, I think the game is very good, and can't wait to play it in my mobile. Don't forget to tell everyone here on Ludum Dare, when you deploy it to the mobile devices!
Congratulations!
I really liked this! Great job, like someone else said, a power indicator would have been nice
Nice simple graphics and a pretty soundtrack too! I also would have liked an indication of how much power a jump would take before making it. The control scheme and physics for jumping were good, but I think needed a little polish to get the feel just right. Thanks for participating!
The level design was very well thought out. The robot falling at the beginning of each restart was frustrating, as was making it to the objective when out of power and not moving to the next stage.
I see you have taken some advice and draw the path the box takes before releasing the mouse. The fact that there are multiple tracks makes the audio great. It prevents fatigue. One thing about level difficulty is I found lvl 12 much harder than 25, but they were all pretty fun. Except for 12... haha jk. Nice color palette, soft and simple, doesn't strain the eyes. Subtle plants were a nice touch. And humorous quotes were so random it made me smile. Also the fact that it was so easy to play in browser and is mobile friendly is a definite +1
one last edit: Utilizing the power bar as a restart button is also great ui management especially for mobile.
Great job on this, there's a lot of content here. Lots of levels, lots of music, the controls are clear, and the levels are just challenging enough that it might take some trial and error, but it's still possible to beat.
First off, the graphics are really rather nice. Good color scheme, nice simple visuals, and easy to tell what is what (for the most part, but I'll get to that in a bit.) The variety of music is appreciated as well, and I do like how simple the gameplay mechanic is. I did have a few issues with the game, however. The graphics for the goal are a bit unclear, both in what they're supposed to be, and what the hitbox is. I found there were times that I thought I wouldn't be able to beat the level where I ended up winning, and vice versa. The movement physics seemed a bit less precise than I'd want for something with instakill spikes. Finally, the bar for indicating the power isn't as apparent as it could be. I didn't notice it at all the first few levels. Still, the concept is solid, it's a very pleasant game to look at, and it'd port wonderfully to mobile. A few tweaks and I'd love to give it another shot.
Nice little game, simple enough to just pick up and play but later on still challenging. Good job!
Very fun game to play, nice music and a very pleasing art style. One thing to note is that i expected that the journey of the box would be an arc but it seems as soon as it arrived at its highest point it just dropped straight down. Might be a design choice and did not take away from the fun just something i noticed.
Great game! It's fun and challenging. This game has a lot of potential One of my favorite games so far. Good work!
Really lovely game, with beautiful art. The gameplay isn't really that unique, but somehow it doesn't take anything away. Seriously, great job!
There is a glitch on level 18 where you spawn gets off centered and makes the stage very easy, but other than that it's a really fun game, but i wish the re spawn was instant. Also the level design was well made as well as the scaling since as the level go on I feel as if I'm becoming more skilled at the game.
Extremely fun, challenging and fair game.
The only thing that kinda annoyed me was the relatively long time before you can move after respawning.
Also I think I cheesed a couple of levels (12 and 15 I belive).
Noticed in the screen shots that there are at least 22 levels, I made it to level 12... The game was oddly addictive, tried level 12 many time with varying success before giving up. Some feedback: I couldn't seem to win with the last jump just before running out of power, it was a little frustrating having to use that last bit of power before respawning, at least after running the same level multiple times :P
Fun game but the audio can be grating.
This is very fun. I like the simplistic art style, and the mechanic is very simple, and intuitive. It's overall fun to play, but I think the player should decelerate slower while in the air, you should be able click anywhere to launch yourself (not just on the player), and restarting should be faster. It's a great game despite these things, which are just minor annoyances.
Great game! Loved the minimalistic art style and the controls work really well. The music got a bit repetetive after a while though.
Nice little concept, like the simple but original style.
Wow really cool game. It was very fun to play. And interesting Control concept. Love it.
Very nice idea. I figured out one thing that if you zoom out the screen you can launch way more :D don't know if this should be allowed or not. Overall, very good!
Nice little game, despite a few frustrations. Level 5 was much harder for me than the following few levels, so I think the difficult wasn't balanced perfectly (only a minor problem though). Overall I enjoyed it, well done :)
Fun game but I feel that some level are way too easy, many of them can be done with one drag. Game seems similar to super meat boy which is good thing.
Great game, very addicting. Looks beautiful. Plays cleanly. Not a big fan of the audio, had to mute that quite rapidly. Good take on the theme. Solid.
Heya! You got a ton of reviews already I see, but I wanted to give my two cents anyway ;) First of all, the art style is very simple, but it works! Well done! I have some regards to the controls however. First of all, I would scale the ratio between drag distance and jump height down a bit. I felt like I had to drag really far most of the times. Also, let the player drag from any point instead of just the player: Lets say the player is near the bottom right edge and I want to jump to the top left. if I can start my drag from any point, there won't be any issues. These two points would also save another issue: The screen resolution of the device you're running the game on can now determine how high and far you can jump. Furthermore, the arc of the jump feels a bit strange. Finally, if I run out of power after making a jump, I can't finish the level anymore? That felt a bit unintuitive.
I don't at all feel negative about the game though. It is simple, but that also means you have been able to execute it very well! The graphics and audio are good, and there's quite some content.
Well done!
Very nice game ! It's a platformer but an original one, and that's what I like ! Graphics are cool, musics create a very cool ambiance...
It is a very nicely done puzzle game with a good challenge. The music is nice and catchy maybe a little too much repetitive. The graphics are simple but nice and they totally are coherent with the game. Good job!
Nice feelings and quite challenging ! Like it
Good looking game and pretty fun too!
It feels like the little robot has a parachute or something though - once you reach the apex of the jump it seems to lose a lot of its inertia and glides down slowly. I also think that waiting for the robot to land after running out of power might be a good idea, in case you reach the goal after falling. At one point the robot just floated on the "fountain" for a few seconds because I had run out of energy just before hitting it, so I had to play the level again.
The music was neat at first...but it got kinda annoying fairly quickly.
Lots of fun puzzles. Gets frustrating at one point. Liked that the levels were designed to be images and also enjoyed the names of each level. :)
Beautiful art style. Innovative gameplay. Minimalistic. I like it, but I have few suggestions. The amount of energy consumed is always the same regardless of the size of the jump. I would recommend to consume the energy proportionally to the size of the jump, otherwise you can use jumps count indicator instead of an energy bar. The next thing is even though I still have a few energy remaining for the last jump and hit the fountain, it is not accepted as "out of power", it is a little bit confusing.
Awesome! Simplistic art style, innovative gameplay and outstanding music makes this a challenging but extremely fun experience. The power thing is a bit confusing, it would have been nice if you could have added a bar which shows exactly how many jumps you have left. Also jumping is a bit hard to control, but overall this is an extremely cool and innovative game!
Great game. Simple (but beautiful) art style. Game is also quite challenging. I would change only one thing : power should change according to jump force. But except that, it was awesome. Well done !
Really fun mini-game !
But there is one problem is that the last charge is always lethal ! because i die when i shot the last charge even if i reach the end in my jump. (Maybe because you reset the party when it collide the floor + charge = 0 ?)
nice game. I liked the simple graphics a lot. And the mars ants !!!! amazing idea :)
simple but fun game. the graphics are definitively something I like!
Nice variation on the rubber band system
I likr thr throwing mechanic in combination with "running out of power". Feels very polished and has nice atmosphere :)
the power metre has a bug, when i had a jump left to make, after i did my jump the level straight away restart from running out of power~ but overall this is a very good game for me to kill my time
I like the control scheme of launching the character to move him, its really fun! I would suggest that the line shows the arc of the jump rather than just the direction although it might make it too easy. The graphics are very pretty too. Good job!
this won't be a problem on iOS and Android, but in the browser I've found that I can zoom out, aim very high, and just jump over obstacles that might have proved harder get through.
Fun little game, I love how many levels there are.
Fun game! I really appreciate the clean art style, it makes everything very clear and straightforward. Props for that. I did find the charged jump mechanic to be a little annoying at times, though. A lot of the challenge right now is in knowing how far the jump will take you, which is hard to predict. I think it would be better if this was more intuitive, and the challenge was more on traversing the level itself.
Great job, had fun playing it :)
Really cool. I like this a lot. It would definitly work well on mobile. The controls took a little getting used but then I really liked them. I would make touching the end point slightly less forgiving. One my favourite games so far. Great work!
Cool game. Everything runs smoothly and the graphics are minimalisticly beautiful.
Got frustrated at level 5, but all in all, this was a polished game. Well designed, minimal graphics and a different way to control a platform game.
Really good gameplay which fits perfectly with the theme. A clean aesthetic and a good background music. Well done. One of my favorite entries for the 39th LD session ++
Graphics were really nice. The use of theme is a little cliche but it works with the game just fine. I got frustated at level 5 too. And background music is a little short. It gets annoying after a while but even the existence of a music is great considering it's a compo game.
Interesting game, very polished graphics wise (though I would fade in the plants when they change positions) however, its a long time after you spawn that you can move and most of the levels could be jumped over.
Love it!
Physics felt really weird for this type of game, the character and its hitbox were far too big as well. Music was very repetitive, I think it would have been more worth your time to make and polish really nice sound effects. Levels were too drawn out with no new gameplay elemens to spice it up. also the whole thing appears to be pixel art but the player character doesn't look like it so there's a clash between the two styles there.
Nice game, it's simple but it have a lot of quality, congrats !
Thank you all for your comments. I really appreciate the positive feedback and critique. I will be working on building a post-LD version which will be released to Android and iOS.
Great game, I LOVE the music! This game would do well with mobile devices especially due to touch mechanic!
I definitely enjoyed the simple presentation and easy to understand controls. Not much else to add really. I read a comment above about indicating how much power a move will take - that seems like a good idea. Well done.
Really liked this game, simple mechanics executed very well!
An enjoyable puzzle game! Kudos for making it web based.
Art was cool , but i wouod ad more bg , but this was clean and ok. Gameplay was good but lagged sometimes. Good work!
I don't really enjoy playing this kind of game but it's good, with nice music a good mechanics.
Not bad, good potential of gameplay! Short looped music(good itself) hammer my mind and got annoying after minutes of playing =(
Naive, but levels are incredible well designed! Very addicting game. Good job.
It's cute. Not too much for a game like this but there's a bunch of levels, which is nice for a Compo game.
Great design, nice style, good gameplay definitely see it being a great mobile game, only downside for me was the audio, it sounds nice but the loops are so short they drove me crazy really quickly and I had to mute it. Aside from that its all good.
You have a great game here, i loved it. The only thing that kind annoyed me was the animation after every death, sometimes i just wanted to go keep going fast again. cheers
Great graphic, great idea, fantastic music.
Only thing that bothered me was that sometimes I died, but wasn't sure what was the reason. It would be great if there were some dying animation, it would give game, so sought after, juice.
Classic game, but effective. Good job !
Original principle, simple but working ! Great job !
That was a fun little game. Reminded me of a 2d golf game, but the hazards were more... hazardous. Fun stuff.
It's an excellent game. Audio was a little repetitive and annoying at times. I got stuck at level 20(Big Fish) and couldn't continue though.
The audio needs a little more variation and better looping. The cut was very noticiable. Maybe have a longer loop.
The ideia is nice and fitting with the theme, makes it a nice puzzle kind of game.
I love this! Nice, minimalistic graphics, very pretty! Cool mechanics, flows well. Thanks!
A solid, working game. Well done mate :)
Surprisingly fun and ergonomic with a touchscreen. If you choose to continue with this game, mobile would be a great target platform. My only complaint is that gravity feels a little slow. Otherwise, good job :)
Simple but addictive. I'd prefer faster movement, but it's not critical. Also, the presentation is cool. All hail the minimalism. :)
Nice little game, I found the music too intrusive and there was no off button. I think the square should have fell faster felt like I was just watching him fall all the time. You had a nice intro to each level but didn't do well for quick restarting.
NB: That sounded quite negative, but I actually really enjoyed it
This game is decent. I liked the nice and simple art style. I also liked the mood that is portrayed in the game by the art and audio. Despite these benefits, the game lacks humor and I strongly recommend for you to opt out of the category (as this game doesn't seem to be like it was meant to be funny). In conclusion, I liked the art and mood of the game, but I suggest you to opt out of the humor category.
Fun and challenging yet so simple. I love this game a lot, nice work
The is a very good game! The graphics were simple, but very nice and ergonomic. The audio was music was also very well done and I liked the variety of tracks. The amount of content was great and this could definitely become another great mobile game like geometry dash. One recommendation I would have is that if you use up all your power but make it to the end, you should be allowed to progress to the next level instead of restarting all over again. Overall, great job and I am interested in what you will add next!
Really fun to play game, with simple and unique idea. The art and sounds are amazing, they create very nice mood in this game. The game is not difficult and I think, that even a little bit too easy. Great Job!
Nice, simple graphics, the randomly changing plants were a nice touch.
Music has amazing potential, if only the loops were a little longer. Right now it gets annoying, even though they are cool, atmospheric tracks. Also, when changing loop, try to wait for the other track to finish, maybe even fade out/in simultaneously to make the transition smoother.
Gameplay wise I would've liked a clearer display of how many jumps I got. The bar doesn't really tell you much just by looking at it, you have to actually play the level to find out when your power runs out. Simply splitting that bar into parts, one for each jump would be enough. The other thing is that, when running out of power on the last jump, you don't count the level as completed which is, in my opinion, not the right way to handle that.
All in all, a very enjoyable entry.
A part from the weird physics of the jump (the drag is a bit too high imho) the game is really good. Nice graphics, nice music, nice controls and a pretty good level design. Good job!
Thank you all for your suggestions and kind remarks! I am currently working on a post-LD version for Android and iOS. I am incorporating all your ideas, adding more levels, creating better soundtracks, and organizing the levels under timed stages. I'm nearly done - only have to get the game to scale to mobile and add the new content - and should have it out before sometime next week. Btw - I have a couple of questions: 1) Can I post a link to the post-LD game here in the comments or on the front page? 2) Would I be allowed to adjust things like - the ratio between mouse and the robot and the length of the jump - to adjust the game's difficulty?
Good game, but PLEASE stop making me wait at the beginning of each level whenever I die. Would have been far more enjoyable otherwise.
Very cool! I don't usually think of robots as very bouncy but it worked. :D I like the minimalist style.
To answer your questions, @thecodefactory, and someone correct me if I'm wrong - I don't think adjusting the difficulty like that would qualify as a bug fix for the LD version, but you can change whatever you want for the post-LD version and post a link wherever you'd like, so long as you clearly indicate which is the LD version of the game and which is post.
really cool idea, i love the system! beautiful entry!
Great entry!
I see that are quite a few comments already, i didn't read them all but i try not to repeat anything.
-Add a ceiling of sorts or limit max velocity/jump distance, i reached stage 20+ by simply zooming out and dragging further to jump from the start to the end.
-The platforms you can jump through shouldn't have hitboxes at the side. Either remove the hitboxes at the sides or make it more obvious/intuitive that you can't.
-Momentum doesn't feel conserved at all while jumping. its like i move to the UI shoot interface last point and a little bit more then fall straight down.
-A mute button + more variation in SFX/music, while the music is nice, a mute button would be too.
-more variation between levels. the levels got really repetitive after a while. Add more elements! moving platforms, powerups for wall jumping, one way/one time use walls/floors are a few that could add spice to the levels
Really COOL Game! Nice move control!
Very interesting puzzle game. The difficulty of each puzzle slowly builds up, which makes it easier to get into the game. Even though the gameplay formula is quite simple, the game is surprisingly difficult in the end. And just as the music started to get annoying, a different track popped up which was a very welcome surprise. All in all a very well polished puzzle game!
This was a great puzzler. I got stuck on level 18 I think (and 5 took forever). One thing I found - when you zoom out you can put a LOT more power in your jumps - might be worth checking for, if possible, to prevent bypassing your planned puzzle solutions (I jumped over most obstacles in at least one level that way). Great game, good job!
Great stylized graphics, the music is kinda tiring after a time (especially since it is not cleanly looping) but it's a good seed of a theme! Liked the core mechanisms, but it seemed to me like the second jump was more powerful than the first could be?
Very good entry! The graphics were simple, but I think they worked for the most part because of the muted color scheme which fits well for a puzzle game. The soundtrack was nice but a bit too repetative and the looping sounded a little off (noticed that especially with the first piece of music). The edition of multiple tracks was nice, however. The mechanic was simple and similar things have been done before in multiple mobile games but it was still very fun and well executed. I will say i expected to have some more momentum to the launches at first but I got used to it. Overall, very good entry!
Addictive little game, could easily see this on a mobile device.
This game is fantastic! It's so addictive and plays very well.
Beautiful! A few suggstions: You can launch at a unlimited strength on the web version due to zooming out, maybe you could set a max 'draw' limit. The music is very nice and fitting but it doesn't seem to loop perfectly Also a button like R to restart instantly would be nice. Good work!
You can literally shoot the ball over 95% of the levels, by simply zooming out. Also zooming out too far leads to a WebGL crash. It was certainly entertaining, but the music loops have this weird click/pause at the moment they repeat which can get a little grating. Apart from that, good work!
Awesome game. It is simple but actually looks finished and polished. Graphics are simple but very stylish. I could easily see myself playing it on my phone. The only thing I would improve is physics. It looks like you decrease horizontal speed over time. It is not how objects in real life usually behave, so it is a bit confusing at first. If you made horizontal speed constant, I think this game would be a little bit more enjoyable. Overall: this is really good game. Simple but addictive.
And I just love procedural bushes placement
Feel like I cheated a bunch of first puzzles as the mouse drag area is not clipped to the game bounds. Just jump over the top. Then I realise you are aware of this as you put it in as the only solution to a level. Woops. Would be nice if the levels restarted quicker. i.e. the player doesn't start to high and I have the wait for it to fall. Level 16 was finicky with the spikes on the front of that first wall (same again at the end of level 21, tho you can also collide with the side of the one-way platform here). Disable drag/mousedown events when in the air (it's weird when the projection/line updates/moves when you land).
Good music change after levels 10, 15, 20. Good random placement of the little decor/weeds (would be nice they animate in/out when you spawn/die tho!).
Aaaaaand that's all I have time for. It was good! Nice entry!
This game has a nice aesthetic, however, I wish there was a bit more background on who the main character is and what he is trying to accomplish. I liked the variety of music and levels however the games controls felt a bit awkward. The robot slides along the ground but loses its momentum in the air and falls straight down. Overall there's lots of content and intricate level design. Good job!
That's a really good entry. Nice graphics, music and game balance!
I'm really excited! After so many incredibly annoying bugs, I finally managed to port **a post-LD version of** Wayside to Android. It's working quite well and I'm really happy. Please check it out if you have an Android phone. I hope you all will like it! :D
Screenshot_2017-08-09-06-07-58_framed.png
Please note : This is a POST-LD version. Don't even think of giving me a rating based on the Android version. Also : I will be releasing the game to the Amazon Appstore for Kindle and Fire tablets. I will also be having it on the Apple App Store as soon as possible.
**I have renamed the game Outback.** *hopefully to prevent confusion between the LD and the post-LD versions)*
**Go download it over here : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thecodefactory.outback**
well done
I made it! I found this really addictive and had to finish it -- very impressive number of levels. I like how you started to explore different styles of play within the levels. I liked the simple graphics and appreciated that you had multiple music loops. The graphics for the player character felt a little out of place and if you're taking this further I think it might be worth putting some work into it. Thanks, that was fun!
Smooth gameplay and good visuals. I would've liked to listen to a music much slower and relaxing. The controls weren't very predictable. so you won't be able to be the master in control. It was a little random. And also, when we die, we spawn in the sky and have to wait until we reach the ground to be able to control. After some levels, It got a little annoying. And overall was so fun and good. keep updating the game.
Hi! This was a really fun little game. I haven't looked through all the comments so I'm not sure what I'm repeating here in my feedback, but I'm sure it'll help to hear repeated feedback in any case.
I had a lot of fun with this, but I'd much rather the power was just represented as a number of available jumps. Frequently it would look like I had one more jump available, and with that jump I'd reach the goal, but I'd lose on the basis of running out of power, which is evaluated before the win condition. I think it would be more elegant to see how many jumps I actually had, which also adds a bit of a strategic choice for the player. I'm also not a big fan of the physics on the character (in terms of the wind resistance/friction during a jump). It makes it a little harder to figure out where to land. A more consistent jumping arc may be more fun, but it's worth a try anyway.
In terms of other small things: I like the graphical style a lot, but the audio looping is a bit jumpy, and the music loop itself is a bit too short. Anyway, those are small polish fixes anyway.
Nice work!
OMG! That was so fun! Nothing more to say. Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stylish graphics and a fun little game. I played for quite some time. Nice.
I like how simple and easy to pick up the game is, the music nicely fits with the cute graphics and the levels difficulty ramps up nicely. I however found the physics of the jump super weird (why does the character slows down when falling ?) and would have loved if smaller jumps made me lose less energy than bigger ones (which does not seems to be the case). Anyway, great job :)
Very interesting little game. Perfect for our mobiles. I really love the music. Good job.
Well done sir! Very nice done. Simple but effective game.
Great game! Simple but with awesome graphics and music.
If you want to check out our game, here is a link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/blackout-4
Nice game. I think that maybe it needs a little "tutorial" on the firsts stages so you can learn how much "strength" do you need to push the robot, because it takes time to learn if you are pushing it too hard or not. And also in that "tutorial" you should remark where is the power line, because it tooks me a little time to figure out where it was. I must say that it was funny for me that you describe that the game has "beautiful landscapes" xD Either way I like the art! It is simple and easy to understand. Good job :)
Very nice game. Congrats.
Cool game, i like the idea and it's really well made. I can totally see how it can translate in a good mobile game. Good Work !
Clever but I feel that the momentum could definitely be changed. I was able to jump over most levels when I felt as if I was meant to be navigating through them. This could also be due to my monitor resolution allowing me to extend my mouse and release pretty far out of the level. The music was nice initially but sadly got a bit annoying and the cut was kinda noticeable and there wasn't much else in terms of audio feedback. I did like banter at the start of each level and I think this game definitely suits mobile well but would take a bit more mechanically for me to want to play more I made it to level 16 before giving in! Good entry
Nice game, good looking minimalistic graphics, good music, only thing wrong is that you can finish most levels by going a tiny bit back on the beggining of the level (so character baerly stays on the floor), and then shoot straight into the finish.
Interesting fling mechanic. The puzzles were well designed. It was a little bit hard to gauge how far you'd go when you moved because of friction and small changes in angle. I liked the music, but it started getting repetitive after a while.
Wow this was a great little game! I couldn't get past level 11. The only thing was I wasn't a fan of was the abrupt stopping. It's like when you get to the end of the power line that you drew, physics ends and you just fall. Maybe that was what you were going for though.
The theme goes really well with the mechanics, excellent job
I like the minimalism. Good concept.
