LD39 — Running out of Power

Assault//Battery by tuism 2017-08-05T18:41:36Z

Pure fun. It's simple, but very clean visually and mechanically---I think this kind of makes it more fun? Like when you try to punch backwards and fail or see a spinning tank it just feels like such goofy fun, like something Arcane Kids might make. I really liked this.

Displaceable source by HolyBlackCat 2017-08-07T23:40:21Z

Probably the only game where I've ever had to use Cheat Engine to get out of a softlock (namely, you can save in one *really* bad spot after getting the blink ability). Apart from that this was mostly alright, if a little punishing at times.

I'm glad the protagonist got arms by the end.

Recapitate by superpokeunicorn 2017-08-03T15:20:18Z

Super unique mechanic, my only gripe being that bats that approach you from below are a pain to hit! I had fun with this, it's generally pretty well executed and designed. Good work!

Cellephant by hippy-dave 2017-08-02T00:21:01Z

Interesting, well-executed puzzle concept! And on the PICO-8 to boot.

I'm impressed that the levels are all procedurally generated, especially since there's a definite progression in difficulty. Some of the later levels can be quite tricky! The music gave me Zoo Keeper vibes (pretty relevant considering the title character), I loved it.

Very good entry, keep it up!

Archetype - Running Out of Power by cakemonitor 2017-08-01T23:49:36Z

Great fun to play with my brother--keybinds were a little incorrect at first for the DS4, but it was an interesting (and pretty unique!) concept. Loved the sunglasses guy. Didn't love the autotracker music...

I liked it andI think it has potential, if you're willing to build more levels in the future! Good job! :)

The Music Box by DDRKirbyISQ 2017-08-07T15:23:45Z

A very cute and nostalgic-feeling entry, the game was pretty comfy overall. I loved the art style, and that the music in each area changed depending on the current time.

I liked this quite a lot, the gameplay wasn't anything new but what's here is very well made. It's always 6:00 in the character's house though!

Notpong by vegard1992 2017-08-02T14:56:33Z

Fun, but I have to agree that the assets are a little too close to prior work for this to be a compo entry.

Took me a bit to figure out what was going on, but it's an interesting variant of Pong. The Lethal League-esque hitstun made it easier to time putting up shields etc. Good effort!

A Thirst For Power by bobsleigh 2017-08-05T19:37:24Z

Very fun twist on twin-stick shooters, particularly mixing in bullet-hell elements. I liked the delicate risk/reward balance when I needed to put myself in harm's way to recharge my power, although I think it'd be a little fairer if you made the recharge spots blink red or something before they move.

I'm impressed that you managed to get such a variety of music into the game, I guess they were composed around each boss's aesthetic or personality (which was pretty neat). I had a lot of fun with this one, great work!

Blasphemy! by FelixMcFelix 2017-08-02T01:25:33Z

@tomb @caranha @neowhoru Thanks!

@shinmera The messages seem to be a matter of personal preference, but I agree about the mechanics.

@vegard1992 @everbrave @yetman Yeah, the mechanics are in need of a little tweaking (a lottle?). It doesn't handle quite as well as I'd like! If I had more time, I'd have liked to put in more "introductory" levels to teach mechanics bit-by-bit---that way players aren't overwhelmed with tricky platforming AND new stuff.

Blasphemy! by FelixMcFelix 2017-08-03T01:14:09Z

@pbg Ah! I didn't know that the PICO-8 supports a 60fps update loop. The wall-slide damping was intended (particularly to make the last level easier), but I think you're right about it making the rest of the game feel worse. I think I could make these changes in an updated version of the cart (although I'm not sure about the PICO community's etiquette for this).

@gabrielbucsan @blobo @tacohej @superpokeunicorn @pablodap Thanks, and thanks for the feedback. I tried to keep the visuals readable, though I can see why the flashing might be annoying. If I can come up with some new twist for the mechanics, I'd like to rework the cart!

@elgregos @automatonvx Thanks, though sorry about the difficulty! I'd have liked to have made it ramp up more gradually.

Plasma Arena by red-fan-games 2017-08-07T16:13:05Z

I love games with skill-based movement. I had a blast with this, and it made a lot more sense after watching 2GD's (beloved by all but GabeN) video on strafe jumping. I'm certainly impressed that you managed to write this in C given the time constraints, I know it definitely would *not* be my first choice of language! Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go buy Devil Daggers. :sunglasses:

EDIT: I think what this needs, probably, is a timer or other scoring mechanism?

ZapDune by diptoman 2017-08-06T20:54:51Z

First-rate animations, graphics, music etc. Everything feels well-considered and planned, it's a very polished experience. It's an interesting twist on tower defense, and the controls handle very well (I'd like jump to be a separate button from the arrow keys though!). Grapple hooks are always fun to play around with, and I'm glad that it's no exception here. It's quite forgiving (in a good way), since I noticed that enemies will always prioritise still-living turrets over the core.

I really liked this overall, great work everyone!

Spacy adventure by egordorichev 2017-08-09T00:21:02Z

Pretty neat, although on my third playthrough there were no enemies until the first boss? It was simple but effective, in that it makes you have to carefully consider your aim in a genre known for encouraging you to fire indiscriminately. Music was neat, but a little too spartan I think. Good work!

Rocket Rescue by automatonvx 2017-08-03T14:18:20Z

Difficult, but fun. I liked the music! I think it'd work better without a lives count though---that way you aren't punishing players too harshly while they're still learning the intricacies of the movement system. Good work though!

Ministry of Synthesis by impbox 2017-08-10T02:01:17Z

Very interesting concept, but the time limit and platforming really work against the cerebral nature of the game. The three-wave modulation puzzle kicked my ass---looking at things and wave equations on paper, I got a feel for how phase modulation would work (and came to the conclusion that you couldn't escape the two-lobe pattern without using feedback loops). The graphics were clean and effective, the audio sets up an interesting atmosphere, I liked the presentation.

Good work, I just wish I had time to internalise the concepts during the game!

Shutdown by mahalis 2017-08-07T16:26:32Z

Pretty neat game, with some nice relaxing music and wonderful visual effects. For some reason I had it in my head that the purple programs would harm me if I ate them (colour-coding in other games?), but I soon realised you were meant to eat everything.

Keep it up!

V-Empire by GabrielBucsan 2017-08-03T01:02:24Z

Alright game, I enjoyed the difficulty ramping up over time (by the end, it was really difficult to find normal humans).

It had an interesting feel/aesthetic to it: the music was very good in that regard, but I think everything being red-tinted might have been a bit hard on the eyes. It's a solid entry I think, well done!

Burnup Blade by DragonZBW 2017-08-02T00:38:18Z

I liked the graphics throughout---particularly the animation work on the main character---but I think she needed more design work. The music was a good fit (and well-made), I think you have the start of something good here.

The game itself was pretty fun, although it was too easy to get stun-locked by a gang of enemies if your sword hits failed to connect.

Good work overall though, keep it up!

Evelyn by Everbrave 2017-08-02T14:17:00Z

The game was pretty relaxing (with some lovely graphics!), but I had a lot of trouble understanding the robot guy. Maybe some subtitles might help?

I couldn't find a way to repair the ship once I farmed 100 crystals, and ended up dying because the player's velocity isn't reset when they start mining (ouch!). The telepod was a good way to get around, I liked the mechanic. Still, I thought it was a nice and relaxing entry. Keep it up!

Shy Gladiator by caranha 2017-08-02T16:00:23Z

Smart use of the theme! This is pretty well presented too, the graphics and music are pretty neat. I liked that you can beat the cyclops very quickly if you know how to bait him, but I couldn't find any such tactics for the skeletons or dragon. Glad to see more PICO-8 games! Keep it up!

Drought by tacohej 2017-08-03T15:37:24Z

I liked the use of the theme, particularly tying the player's movement speed into their thirst. This *does* have the unintended side effect of making the player just want to camp around any oases they find, but I liked the thought behind it.

The overall look and feel are pretty good, although I'd advise you *not* to mix pixel sizes in future if you can help it---it just gives a more cohesive look. You have good monster variety, pretty good music, and the sprites themselves are designed well (although a little washed out :pensive:). I like this, it's a pretty sweet effort. Keep up the good work!

Blackout by 100th_Coin 2017-08-03T16:11:44Z

Pretty fun overall, I loved the enemy designs (although I apparently can't rate you on your graphics). Making the music slow down as the player ran out of power was a good idea! I think it could have been balanced by maybe forcing a recharge square pseudorandomly, since you can end up without good items to start off with fairly often. Good work though!

Rush by Shinmera 2017-08-01T19:25:51Z

Both Windows binaries crash on Win10 (x64 Intel i7, AMD card) for me. If you can fix it, message me and I'll give it a play. :)

Rush by Shinmera 2017-08-01T23:28:42Z

@Shinmera I've uploaded a [copy of the log I'm getting](https://www.dropbox.com/s/8vdkb37ury55694/trial.log?dl=0). Looks like a shader compile error, I don't think the AMD drivers let you use function names like "__main_1" etc.

Rush by Shinmera 2017-08-02T14:42:26Z

@shinmera The binary no longer crashes outright ([and the log file now shows no *explicit* errors](https://www.dropbox.com/s/2pay2asxsl9d87c/trial2.log?dl=0)), but I'm just seeing a black screen now. I'll need to give it a run on another machine or something.

Rush by Shinmera 2017-08-03T20:50:20Z

Managed to get it running on a friend's laptop. Aside from some performance problems when using the default Intel graphics system (are you using lots of box/convolutional filters [Gaussians at full res etc.] in the frag shader?), but it ran okay on the Nvidia chip.

Most of the levels felt fair (even though I was fumbling about in the dark), but the barrel tower and the ledges hidden in them felt really inconsistent. It did take a while to get used to the platforming, but it's super hard to get the feel of that perfect in a gamejam environment. The graphics were pretty good overall, and worked to sell the atmosphere.

Pretty good effort overall, well done!

Mad Trax by boats 2017-08-02T23:52:16Z

Certainly nice to look at, but I don't think I had too much fun with this. Getting more upgrades felt a little too random for my tastes. It was pretty well produced though, good work!

Zombies and RVs by pixelgriffin 2017-08-06T15:12:56Z

Hectic fun, I'm certainly glad that you can restart at the upgrade points! This was pretty well made overall, although it could be pretty tricky to get to the front RV for that sweet bonus. Good work!

Power Outage by Xyrion 2017-08-02T01:16:34Z

Never thought I'd see an RTS on the PICO, I didn't know you could use mouse input like that! Steamrolling the local machines with my robot army was oddly satisfying, though I think it'd have been nice if I had to defend the base from time to time. The graphics in-game were pretty good, the title screen was well done too!

(The music was alright, don't worry about it!)

Good work, keep it up!

Charge! by dragonxvi 2017-08-02T16:41:09Z

Fun little roguelike, I'm enjoying the vision mechanics (reminds me of the old BYOND games). It's pretty funny watching the monsters accidentally kill one another, free food is always nice. :stuck_out_tongue:

There's a surprising amount of complexity and variation in this, and I'm surprised that I'm liking it despite my usual dislike of rouguelikes. The graphics are great, I'm surprised you could do all this on the PICO-8 in just 48 hours!

There are some oddities (like the map occasionally letting you wander out into space), and it's entirely possible to get enough energy that you can skip the last few levels (I did, since the Zydd were kicking my ass!). It's an excellent entry though, great work!

Turn Towards the Light by Selgeron 2017-08-06T18:36:23Z

That was alright, I managed to beat it after a few tries and exploring the map. Certain mechanics felt like they were at odds with the platforming finesse required: suddenly dashing forward when you pick up a ball of light was the worst offender (since it sends the player hurtling towards certain death!). With a little more development, I think it could be pretty solid!

Run, Joseph, run by Alexandr AndroidDev 2017-08-07T16:36:27Z

That was alright, I felt that the game takes two playthroughs: one to learn where everything is, and then another to speedrun all the tasks. It was pretty well made (nice music and graphics), but I felt like there should have been some fanfare when you complete each major task (a custom animation, a sound? I wanted to see my fish selfie!). Pretty good overall, well done!

Energy Boy by neowhoru 2017-08-01T23:59:00Z

I loved watching Energy Boy dance through the city streets with nary a care for his well-being or the apparent alien invasion. That much energy drink can't be healthy though... :stuck_out_tongue:

It was cutesy, and overall pretty coherent. Most of my intended suggestions (more challenge, air-control) have already been raised. Good for your first LD entry, keep at it!

NUP-5 by Seeley 2017-08-02T02:04:49Z

Nice visuals (and synthwave-y soundtrack), but it felt like my character's life was never in danger. I think you need to show the player how much health their character has, bring in some challenge, and maybe offer some more tactical options to spice things up.

Still, it's a good effort: keep up the good work!

Rats will kiss the gunner's daughter by Mr.Houdini 2017-08-03T00:42:12Z

Interesting game, I liked piecing together the mystery and the clever twist on the theme. Given that the same personalities are used between games, I can see why you wouldn't reveal the true identity at the end. The art was pretty good overall, and I think the writing and use of Bach's music gave the game a great atmosphere. Keep up the good work!

(Couldn't help but notice the Westerosi map on the table...)

Saito's Transgression by Kapricorn Media 2017-08-02T15:21:15Z

Visually striking, you have very nice art direction for this game. I like that you tried to tell the story while leaving much unsaid---it added a sort of mystery. It wasn't all that clear what I had to do in the final sequence, but I managed to figure it out by accident after flying around for a while. All the elements you have here make for a very nice atmosphere.

A good entry overall, keep it up!

ZETPACK-99 by verysoftwares 2017-08-07T14:28:12Z

Very very clever concept, incredibly fun (although selecting the right tile when clearing paths could be a bit finicky). The music is nice and relaxing, the graphics are pure and unambiguous (which is a must for a puzzle game): the presentation is very good *because* of its simplicity.

I'm glad I could beat the game, I'd love to see how you could develop this further.

Space Power by Sergixnet 2017-08-02T15:34:11Z

Pretty basic, but a neat and complete package. I think it'd make sense if the player lost power for shooting (and not over time) or something like that, otherwise they can just spam the shoot button! That way you're forcing players to consider their aim and carefully time their shots etc. The graphics did the job, they were clear and readable as needed. Good work!

Wayside : A world awaits you by TheCodeFactory 2017-08-08T00:18:07Z

You can literally shoot the ball over 95% of the levels, by simply zooming out. Also zooming out too far leads to a WebGL crash. It was certainly entertaining, but the music loops have this weird click/pause at the moment they repeat which can get a little grating. Apart from that, good work!

Low battery by David Brož 2017-08-01T15:48:30Z

@Krathya Seems playable to me...

Alright game -- the graphics and sound effects chosen did the job, perhaps it could have done with some music? I liked little touches like the batteries and plugs rotating as you moved them around the screen. The only usability gripe I had was that batteries and plugs could be placed in such a way that the turret wouldn't *actually* charge, maybe you could make them snap?

Spacesquid Spaceship by Nezumi Games 2017-08-01T19:06:23Z

Love the graphics in this one. The gameplay was a little tough on my mouse hand after a while, but it was a good level of micromanagement. The audio is nice and atmospheric (but I can't rate that) -- but if I had to change anything, I'd make it so that the player wouldn't have to go through the tutorial again if they die. Good work overall!

a story about a cat by increpare 2017-08-03T23:43:03Z

My favourite part was when I managed to help my poor cateen jump on a man's head and escape from the world. It was definitely endearing in its own way. Good work!

Hungry Harry's Climb by PBG 2017-08-02T01:43:33Z

Very charming platformer! Hungry Harry seems like a swell guy, I had fun with this. I like that you managed to get procedural level generation going, although the level difficulty wasn't always balanced as a result. The sound effects you've designed fit the game well, they have a very satisfying "crunch" to them.

The art was pretty cute overall, reminded me of the old ZX Spectrum-era in its own way. Good work, keep it up!

Night Driver by nbitsstudio 2017-08-06T20:00:59Z

Very pretty, although the UI seems hardcoded for 16:9 resolutions: things become a little misplaced at e.g. 1920x1200. The physics are slightly overkill, but the driving controls are mostly alright (although I'd like to be able to brake while I'm holding accelerate, Trackmania style). Good work!

AEOS by Yetman 2017-08-01T20:05:26Z

Visually really nice and minimalist---I really love it when people make use of proper lighting/global illumination, it sets up a nice atmosphere. The lack of checkpoints, however, makes what should be a relaxing game far less so. I couldn't hear any audio when I played, which is a shame; the lapping of waves against the boat would add to the experience. I still enjoyed the game somewhat, good job!

Soul Gun by EX3 2017-08-03T14:49:47Z

Nice graphics for a semi-remake of VVVVVV, but there are weird issues that crop up (turning the character can cause them to abruptly fall off corners because hitboxes aren't centred, state doesn't reset when you go back to a checkpoint, being able to walk through tiles). I had to give up after being sent back 5 screens or so in the room full of those invincible turrets, I think for something like this you need to give players a safety net after a really tough section (more checkpoints, probably). Still, it's pretty good. Keep it up!

People are the power by ElGregos 2017-08-03T01:58:35Z

Quite a different concept for a game, it took a little experimentation to get the hang of the mechanics but they're different enough from one another to give a good variety. The graphics are clean and readable, especially given the small resolution of the PICO, and the sound design is pretty neat (whole-tone scales!). I had fun with this, good work!

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

The Obelisk by wilsk 2020-10-12T19:45:00Z

Difficult to control, but I figured it out on the second go. The graphics are nice!

WHILE(ALIVE) by Skyeward 2020-10-20T20:35:02Z

I think the game was pretty enjoyable, and the UI and presentation were spot-on. As far as graphics go, the pixelisation made it pretty hard to aim I thought (and didn't cover the entirety of my screen at 1920x1200). It did look very nice though! The SFX and music set the tone very well, and are well-made.

Gameplay-wise, I think the main loop was pretty enjoyable. I think I'd have liked multiple weapon slots to swap between? That way a player could alternate between a fast (but weak) pea-shooter, and a heavier weapon, or other combinations!

Good work!

Cycle of Pawmerce by graebor 2020-10-24T21:20:41Z

Very paw-lished entry! I played in single player, but I really enjoyed the art, presentation, music, and core gameplay. Great work.

Sushi for Robots by ludipe 2020-10-21T18:39:27Z

Clever puzzle game, and an excellent introduction to alternate history sushi as experienced by our robot friends. Some of the levels took a while, but I thought the core mechanics were very well thought out. Great work!

Multitasking by FelixMcFelix 2020-10-06T20:13:17Z

@vleue I realise I forgot to mention that spacebar makes the character wait, which makes the game more playable! Can I ask what OS you're on if the text didn't show up in the corner?

Multitasking by FelixMcFelix 2020-10-21T22:56:33Z

@daitli Thanks -- could you tell me what OS you were running on? I know the game (engine) crashes on Windows if you minimise the game window, I'm wondering if there's something else.

General Phantom by terryg 2020-10-20T20:45:46Z

The idea of possessing people in a fixed time loop is pretty neat. I had a really hard time trying to aim and not-die, and I feel my sense of scale was really weird? Like the soldier became twice as tall once you body-jacked them. It's a neat idea, I just don't think I could get it to click for me.

Fort Loop by deepnight 2020-10-20T20:04:13Z

Excellent graphics, and a very nice application of the theme. I really enjoyed the mechanics you cooked up, and the variety of levels to challenge was worthwhile. The little touches after each loop like the halo around usable objects and the character move speed boost made it easier to preposition, adjust, and intuit the mechanics.

Naturally, I think that music would have made the experience a bit more cohesive. An issue I had with the game was that I think I'd have really liked a way to speed up each cycle (or end it early!), particularly on the level where I had to catch diamonds. Only controls issue I had was that on some levels I expected that running into doors etc. with a held object would use it automatically.

Good job all in all!

Looplex by aviv871 2020-10-21T22:49:20Z

Was a little unclear at first, but I thought it was good to use the knowledge I'd build up over the loops. Audio and core concepts were really good. I felt the graphics were a little mis-matched though (resolution, style), and like some other people here I missed out on the rationale of the last number. It felt like I was being goaded towards 4, i.e. the number of dots on the carpet in the room with the key, rather than the correct answer which I still can't see the rationale for. I really liked this though, excellent work!

Time to Act by Vodzik 2020-10-21T20:21:54Z

Managed to make it after 3 loops! Interesting and fun, the TTS voice asking me to stay calm in the face of a black hole was pretty funny. The core idea was really neat, and I think the music helped set the spacy feeling particularly well. Kudos!

a Damsel a Day by alec 2020-10-21T22:54:02Z

Music and art style were wonderfully kitschy, I had a great time (24 loops)! Very very stylish, you have a good feel on how to make a game feel polished in such a short timespan. Good job!

Operation Rewind by lilkrit 2020-10-21T18:52:42Z

I quiet liked this after the first set of challenges, which were definitely a difficulty spike! Beyond that though, it was a pretty good 3D entry; music set the tone well, too. I think it'd have been nice if you'd came up with some challenges that mixed the different mechanics together, particularly the grapple hook. Good work!

Everything is Garbage by vfqd 2020-10-24T21:14:02Z

Wonderful and full of personality. I enjoyed the oddly percussive sound effects attached to everything, maybe some musical counterpoints would have made it all come together? Wonderful graphics, and quite playful in how it presents modern society. Good work!

Eat your cereals by Harksa 2020-10-21T17:35:36Z

That was... disturbing. I came for the comical physics and the wonderful skull breakfast and left forever changed. You have an excellent sense of comedic timing, that's for certain.

WhileLoops by Ausstein 2020-10-21T21:01:12Z

A bit hectic, but definitely a blast. Sound effects and presentation were very good, I enjoyed clicking away at the neverending onslaught of popups. Nice work!

Hiccup Time by Somogy 2020-10-20T21:01:36Z

The core mechanic was pretty interesting. It took me a few loops to work out how to control it, but timing button presses for just before you teleport was pretty nice! I didn't like how much seemed to fall to trial and error though when it came to chests; if there was a way of figuring out whether I'd lose progress for opening one, I didn't see it.

Not rating you on Audio and Graphics as requested.

Domain of the Time Wizard by BookerBlueJay 2020-10-21T22:32:11Z

Always love to see Pico-8 entries! It's polished, you've got some lovely effects in, and I think the graphics and music worked together to set a good tone. I agree with your other reviewers that you manage to get feedback and impact working just right, which always goes a long way in making the player feel involved. It took me a few runs to realise that there were *also* illusory walls, but I think all in all it worked as a means of getting the player to explore the whole map. Great work!

The LoopHole by morcado 2020-10-21T20:13:46Z

I enjoyed being able to loop back around on the map to make up for my platforming mistakes. Sorry to say that I didn't really enjoy the platforming, it felt very slow and hard to adjust. Still, good job!

No Grave Too Shallow by Skiffage 2020-10-21T23:12:52Z

I'm not sure I get how the theme fits in, but the idea and story are darkly funny. I enjoyed playing, good work.

Keep moving and nobody burns by Vleue 2020-10-12T19:49:54Z

Quite a nice bomberman-alike, I actually really liked the idea of treating the game map as one looping "tape" between left and right (but forcing the player to go one way). I think music and SFX would have made the game more impactful, but the gameplay loop was pretty solid.

In The Loop by Luc-creationallabs 2020-10-21T23:06:31Z

Very inventive game! I think some soothing music would have gone nicely along with this, mainly because the precise inputs can take their toll on you emotionally by the end (I kid!). I think there's a fantastic kernel of an idea here, and you executed it well. Excellent work.

Ballroom by StellarBearGames 2020-10-21T17:45:12Z

I thought it was really cutesy and sweet. Imagine my surprise when you decided to amp up the difficulty of dancing! Very nice, and a lovely ending.

SORO BORO by nethead 2020-10-20T22:15:19Z

Very nice to look at, and an interesting concept. I didn't have any issue with the controls, but dead enemies being able to kill me was a major pain point. The music was nice and fit the dark tone, but I would have liked if it didn't reset every time I died.

Great work!

Collateral Damage by Michael Parrish 2020-10-21T20:54:18Z

Very nice twist on the idea of space invaders. Certainly made me weigh up each of my shots. I think that it would have been really useful if the aliens shook before moving in closer to the planet: I found that caused me to miss a few shots because I didn't expect the sudden change in direction.

Simple and intuitive gameplay, very stylish. Graphics, music, gameplay clicked together very well. You weren't kidding about the "extreme" camera though, I feel a bit nauseated! Excellent work! Reminded me of all my RCT rides gone horribly wrong.
