good game a bit hard but otherwise fun very meatboy

caranha 2017-08-01 13:52

HARD! And great music. I found it a bit hard to control the little guy, and couldn't get past the first room with the two switches :-( But did I say I really liked the music?

Thanks for the game :-)

shinmera 2017-08-01 14:51

Quite alright, though the mechanics were way too unforgiving in places. The rather insulting game over screens didn't help my will to continue playing either, so I had to drop it before I could complete it.

Overall a nice effort, but it could've maybe used some more playtesting.

Wow. So the LD site just posted a bunch of empty comments for me because it wasn't responding. Sorry about that. I can't seem to delete them either. Welp.

neowhoru 2017-08-01 20:13

Its one of the best game i played currently here. I really love the concept of it and the art style.

vegard1992 2017-08-02 00:36

Overall pretty solid. Mechanics need a bit of fine adjustment in particular the wall sliding and aerial control. Nice graphics. Love the comments you get when you fail!

everbrave 2017-08-02 00:39

Way too hard for my old reflexes. I've noticed that if I can beat my own games with only a slight challenge, then that means that other players will find it very challenging. I always make my games easier than I think they need to be. When you program the mechanics yourself, they're always easier to understand, not to mention a few hours of playing while developing. Overall a pretty neat little twitch platformer. Fun idea. Maybe I'd get further with a controller. lol Or WASD movement... I can't do the right handed platformer thing.

yetman 2017-08-02 00:40

My life is too short to finish this game. The visuals and audio are awesome (I have a thing for retro styled games). The game is too hard for me, It reminded me why I never finished Meatboy. Even though , I still love this game and will surely retry later after collecting my shattered will.

felixmcfelix 2017-08-02 01:25

@tomb @caranha @neowhoru Thanks!

@shinmera The messages seem to be a matter of personal preference, but I agree about the mechanics.

@vegard1992 @everbrave @yetman Yeah, the mechanics are in need of a little tweaking (a lottle?). It doesn't handle quite as well as I'd like! If I had more time, I'd have liked to put in more "introductory" levels to teach mechanics bit-by-bit---that way players aren't overwhelmed with tricky platforming AND new stuff.

pbg 2017-08-02 02:59

Beat it! Whew, that was tough! I agree with some of the comments regarding the difficulty. I specifically had trouble with the sliding mechanic. If you are against a wall, but NOT holding the arrow towards the wall, you still slide slowly, whereas the slide is gruelingly slow if you hold the arrow. I would maybe adjust this to a single speed while sliding down (maybe the faster of the two) and turn OFF sliding if you do not press against the wall - this would help you fall faster in situations where you need it. Also, this game is begging for 60fps! _update60() please!

That being said, this is a very polished entry. The music is excellent and the transitions and effects are really well done. I really enjoyed my time with it. At first, I thought it might be nice to not press X to push a button, but it actually feels kind of nice - jumping by the final button in midair and hitting X feels great. Well done!

gabrielbucsan 2017-08-02 15:52

Great entry! Had a lot of fun playing this, though it is hard. Good job.

tacohej 2017-08-02 16:01

I think the music, the feel (mostly) and the artwork was great. Kinda wished it had some unique mechanism that would make it stand out. Anyway, good job

100th-coin 2017-08-02 16:02

This was a ton of fun! the music was catchy and the controls were tight!

elgregos 2017-08-02 22:20

Jeez, way too hard and stressful to me. Can't go beyond 3rd level (5 seconds??). Too bad, as it's well made, with nice gfx, catchy music and, I can only imagine :), many levels. In fact a rather amazing job for a 3 days jam. But a game too punishing to my taste, being not a fan of platformers. Good job anyway!

automatonvx 2017-08-02 22:52

Love it, the graphics and music are awesome. But too hard for me, I did not manage to get past more than the first couple of levels, which is a shame because I wanted to see more. The taunting messages are fun if a bit cruel, but I would show them for a bit less time so I can get right back to dying. I'll say it again - LOVE THE MUSIC. I really have to try out pico-8 sometime soon.

superpokeunicorn 2017-08-02 23:15

This game is pretty intense. I love how the short timer gives the game a speed running sense of urgency. The game could get pretty tough, but short levels along with tight, responsive controls make it do-able. The visuals were really nice too. It was clear what everything was despite the ultra low res graphics, although the flashing lights were a bit disorienting. The audio is also top notch. Very lovely chip tunes! Though the game is pretty short, I had a blast playing it. Nice work!

pablodap 2017-08-02 23:53

Great work! The music was cool and I loved that just from the beginning you have no time and have to act up.

felixmcfelix 2017-08-03 01:14

@pbg Ah! I didn't know that the PICO-8 supports a 60fps update loop. The wall-slide damping was intended (particularly to make the last level easier), but I think you're right about it making the rest of the game feel worse. I think I could make these changes in an updated version of the cart (although I'm not sure about the PICO community's etiquette for this).

@gabrielbucsan @blobo @tacohej @superpokeunicorn @pablodap Thanks, and thanks for the feedback. I tried to keep the visuals readable, though I can see why the flashing might be annoying. If I can come up with some new twist for the mechanics, I'd like to rework the cart!

@elgregos @automatonvx Thanks, though sorry about the difficulty! I'd have liked to have made it ramp up more gradually.

gil4 2017-08-03 11:19

A cool and polished entry, a second pico8 one I see and like right off the bat. It's pretty finished as is, so the only things I'd change are:

1. Only cling to the wall when you're pressing a corresponding direction button, since the character gets "stuck" to the wall a tad too often for a game where you have a timer running out for each level.

2. Make the "game over" scenes faster, or even remove them altogether (even though I liked the messages) so that the player dying around the start of a level a lot wouldn't have to spend half his time there getting dragged out of the flow this game is great at setting up. That said, I didn't get past the early level with the conveyor belts due to (1) being a tad too frustrating for me to cope with, and as such I'm not sure if this was more of an architecture decision to get everything on a level to its default state in an easier manner of reloading it from scratch while being on a retry scene, so of course I'm not aware if that'd be an adequate decision on your part.

All in all, I definitely liked the game if I bothered to write all this and annoy you with my opinion, thanks for making it and well done!

teddydd 2017-08-03 12:15

It's nice idea, with pretty graphics and good music but it's too hard. It's hard because player has no precise control over the character. It inert, sticks to the walls... Restart takes too much time for a game when you die all the time. It should be instantaneous otherwise it's just annoying. You should take a look at '10 seconds ninja' :)

nalia1991 2017-08-04 00:19

Great game! Nice graphic: simple yet well though. Amazing music too.

The level increase in difficulty and you get to learn how to play properly. The last two level were very challenging yet fair (since you have infinite life). I found myself trying over and over. I thought that the various game over message were a nice touch.

I was surprised that you'd always stick to the wall, but I actually thought it made the game kina easier: even if the time was running out, I felt I was more in control.

Some all in all, I enjoyed your game very much, it was very engaging and very polished. Well done!

rombus 2017-08-04 02:12

Love the game man! The graphics and the music are awesome! it get's intense when you have to deactivate the laser doors.

Congrats on the game man! I really enjoyed it :D

theonethatneverwas 2017-08-04 14:09

Nice little game. It reminded me of super meat boy, it was challenging and fun. Good job!

lereveur 2017-08-04 19:14

I sucks so much at this kind of games ! But still, I can recognize a good one, and it is. Well done !

bombjack 2017-08-05 09:53

wow!!! really hard! great game desing!

meta-link 2017-08-06 19:54

A PICO-8 game, so cool !

The core mechanics are classic, but the game is fun to play and well made. Also the arts are cool !

Good job :)

sidhi 2017-08-06 21:09

I love this game! The music is so cute and I love the humour in it. Sadly I'm too bad with video games to beat it but congrats, it's a really good work! :D

junber 2017-08-06 21:12

This looked and sounded amazing. Overall the levels were really well designed (I had some minor problems with conveyor belts being to close to lasers). The controls were a bit floaty but if you were going for something similar to meat boy in that regard you succeeded (I don't really like the controls there either but that's just personal preference). I also quite liked the story was handled with the ending screen. Really cool game.

diptoman 2017-08-06 22:09

Pretty standard stuff, but super well polished - I really liked it! If I had to complain, it would be the gravity and wall hanging - they made it harder, but I'm not convinced in a good way. It made the whole thing feel "floaty", and that is not a feeling I'd want to have in a precision platformer. Overall though, they weren't major detractors, great work!

reiv 2017-08-07 01:19

This was fun!(and hard). It took me a few tries to get used to the gravity. Those after dead messages were funny. I liked the graphics and music a lot. Well polished and cool game.

peter-jonsson 2017-08-07 19:15

A very fine game with really neat graphics, audio and with a great sense of humor for when you die (happens a lot).

frankiesmileshow 2017-08-07 20:28

Very solid game, great work! Love those colors.

jotson 2017-08-08 02:49

Nice graphics and sound. Very cool what you can achieve with pico8. Too difficult for me though.

magicspore 2017-08-08 16:37

Good idea and art, but jump and physics are bad

shess 2017-08-10 04:16

Neat, minimalistic and insanely hard. I've never been good at this particular kind of games, demanding of skill and precision, but surprisingly I found myself trying again and again until I finally succeeded. I'd maybe suggest making the main hero stand out a bit more visually.

bmacintosh 2017-08-10 04:42

Very nice little story and use of the theme. The audio and visual components of the game are outstanding. The level design is also nice for the few levels there are. I found the controls to be a bit hard to manage - I always found myself moving way too far sideways, especially given the relatively slow fall speed. I think maybe if you are moving sideways into a wall, you still accelerate up, so when you eventually clear it you end up shooting off at a high speed.

2017-09-14 13:08

Nice graphics, challenging game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eXpztmcl_M
