LD39 — Running out of Power

HackOS by stevenjmiller 2017-08-07T14:10:18Z

Best game I've played in this jam. My only comments are that the player position is not always obvious, and that a locked cell should look different when on its own, or when over another cell, which function gets confusing for now. But well, it's a jam, and for the rest, I loved every part of your game. The concept, the humor, the calm and eerie music, the very well crafted puzzles, the mails moments that bring a fresh break between puzzles (and reminded me a bit Gunpoint)... Excellent work!

Ardis Mobile Mission by Franklins Ghost 2017-08-07T09:20:35Z

It's a good idea, and the art is really fine, love the black & white + 1 color and shaky outlines, but unless I'm missing something, the game's not there. Battery's running down awfully quick, that'd be ok if there was a way to reload it, but there isn't, the game ends on an empty battery pic, nothing I can do except closing and relaunching the game. I managed to find 1 answer, at best I guess I could have 2, but it's clear I won't get all answers in one play. I know it's only a 2 days dev, but I think you should have tried the jam and use that necessary extra day. But again, you quite have it concerning the theme, innovation and graphics.

Power lines down! by thaaks 2017-08-08T20:26:01Z

I like this kind of puzzle games, with simple but effective mechanics. I played 4 or 5 levels until, alas, a bug (I think) prevented me going any further. It happened on the level where you first get modern wind turbines. I thought they'd bring more energy, but in fact the prod. energy stayed at 0, even while connecting other energy sources and having many wires in green and going to the city.

Just to be sure I retried and again at level 6, whatever I connect, the prod. energy stays at 0. And this time I made it sure every connection was ok, from sources to the city. And yes, I understood that this level needed you to turn wire on sources too :)

Edit: I retried again and the level 6 really seems to have problems, esp. on wind turbines.

Quite addictive game though. Except that bug, maybe you should add a cursor or something to highlight the wire over which is the mouse. Sometimes, esp. with straight lines, I turn the wrong one.

Fun and addictive game, though! I also liked the generated levels.

Cellephant by hippy-dave 2017-08-02T21:02:02Z

Cute little game, but the reason of the overload when reaching the exit or a battery seems mysterious to me, although there's obviously some logic behind. I also like that the game looks finished, with title screen and music. Nice job for a first! Ain't Pico great? ;)

Shekateka by dietzribi 2017-08-04T16:13:31Z

The laser pluging-in is a great idea, but the shooting mechanic is deeply flawed. How the hell are we supposed to beat the room with 3 zombies, when a zombie needs 20 shots to disappear? Or maybe you're aiming hardcore difficulty, but jeez, stuck in the 3rd room, that game could use some difficulty progression. This being said, very good work on a 2 days work, it even has a tutorial. It's just not for me.

Blasphemy! by FelixMcFelix 2017-08-02T22:20:48Z

Jeez, way too hard and stressful to me. Can't go beyond 3rd level (5 seconds??). Too bad, as it's well made, with nice gfx, catchy music and, I can only imagine :), many levels. In fact a rather amazing job for a 3 days jam. But a game too punishing to my taste, being not a fan of platformers. Good job anyway!

Ministry of Synthesis by impbox 2017-08-04T16:00:39Z

I followed your dev on Twitter and enjoyed the game, though there are some cons: - First I found the game music clearly obstrusive, couldn't focus on hearing the waves. There shouldn't be music in a game focused on sounds, unless that music is part of the game like in Fract Osc. - I don't know if it was made on purpose or it's a bug, but the way waves scroll in the oscilloscope, as in the gif above, makes it difficult to get what's going on. The colors used to show the 2 original waves and their result also make it hard to see the result. - Couldn't prevent myself confusing the jump and plug keys, but that may be just me.

Just saying for further dev, it's a very good job on 48h dev. I love the idea, one of its kind, and mixing it with a platformer, i.e. instead of a top view puzzler, is great!

Extraction by roguenoodle 2017-08-01T22:39:16Z

Cute and fun game, a bit hard to me, but perfectly suits the theme. Plus the gfx are exactly my kind.

Shy Gladiator by caranha 2017-08-02T15:06:05Z

I love how you twisted the theme, forcing your opponents to lose their power is a clever idea. The game's tough, especially since your energy seems to be lost forever. I'd add some way for the player to gain energy back, maybe not at full level, would it be slowly with time, or by picking items probably first thrown by titans as weapons. Nice idea and mechanics again, plus you made music, a title & game over screens. And Pico-8 is great! :)

Nex Machinan by MestreRothLD 2017-08-07T08:28:52Z

It's a nice and polished game! TBH I only played 5 minutes because power decreases way too quickly to me, but I had fun anyway! I think power decreasing rate should depend on your action, to add some more strategic choices, i.e. barely decreases if you don't move & don't shoot, a bit more if you just move and as it is now when you shoot. I'm also happy you add arrows keys to control the game. Your screenshot states "WASD to move" and as an azerty keyboard user, I usually don't even play those games as they're just not usable, and a bit too oblivious to the fact that qwerty ain't everwhere.

The World's Worst Segway by doomshmuck 2017-08-03T08:27:03Z

Looks like a fun game, I wished I could play, if only controls used arrows keys along with those WASD keys which make it quite difficult on azerty keyboards.

THIRST by Togis 2017-08-04T16:53:53Z

Very good game, the kind I could spend hours on! Can't add muche, I had fun with it. Ok, perhaps the compass wasn't clear enough, as it show the distance to the exit, I would have thought that the less distance should be left and the farthest would have been right, when it is here the opposite. That's all I can say as negative, so... good job!

Charge! by dragonxvi 2017-08-03T08:01:26Z

Roguelikes are not my type so I won't comment on this of course, except that I nonetheless enjoyed the game for a while. The work you put on this is obvious, tremendous job you've done for 48 hrs! Feels quite polished. Maybe the background sprites could have been a bit simpler for legibility. Nice details too, like moving stars in background, or the avatar jumping between tiles instead of just moving tile by tile.

Temple of Illumination by Johngun 2017-08-07T09:54:02Z

I'm not a fan of platformers, especially the spikes-filled ones, but yours maybe made me go further than any! Nice mechanics with the luminosity going down as the orb is powering down, making it more difficult to progress, and a nice trick on the more usual limited time principle often used. The shadows helping to locate the orb are a nice touch too. The game feels quite polished, with good music (thanks for the links!) and graphics. Quite a fun and good game!

The Sourcer by KabalaTrance 2017-08-02T22:08:32Z

At first I wasn't sure of what to do, but got it just when I considered quitting, and just when I was wondering if there was anything more than just clicking, another puzzle came. And I like that! I like the 3 games in one, and as a puzzle game fan, yours is rather clever. As said above, a bit short but hey, it's a game jam!

air mail by rubna 2017-08-02T14:33:12Z

Jeez, that was one nice half hour of playing, couldn't get rid of that smile on my face.

Running out of steam by supremefist 2017-08-04T11:22:51Z

Fun game! The music's nice too, although the train's noise a bit loud and annoying. Good mechanics! (no pun intended, but :))

Scale of Life by ilya_kozlov 2017-08-04T11:03:13Z

Cute, easy and relaxing game! Quite polished with nice graphics and music, the sfx are adorable too. As said above, the theme's not really here but it's a fun game anyway.

Zzap by HS_Dave 2017-08-07T10:12:37Z

Good game, rather an easy one, for which I won't complain ;). Nice graphics and good sfx & music for a game that feels quit polished.

Hungry Harry's Climb by PBG 2017-08-02T21:19:07Z

Hi fellow Pico-8 user! I'm glad you didn't have time for ennemies as the game is already a bit difficult to me. When it comes to nimble platformers, I got ten thumbs:grimacing:. I had fun anyway, it's a nice and polished game, with a cute intro!

Night Driver by nbitsstudio 2017-08-07T08:50:39Z

Great game, the controls are slick (maybe you should tell about space key to break though), global aesthetic (visual & music) is fine. My only comment is that the power bar just never fills. It stays here, empty and inactive, only the "running out of power" alert shows me I'm on trouble. Not a big problem though as of course you never want to avoid a power flash, you want them all! And of course the game was made in only 3 days, so terrific job guys, and fun game!

People are the power by ElGregos 2017-08-02T12:09:49Z

@caranha Thanks! Part of the game, which I didn't have time to add, is that the power you can harvest over 1 GW can be used to enhance your weapons and add new ones. So yes it'd be wise to over 1 GW, and that's why you can keep harvesting even after the "next level" message. But then there's a bug with cops later as they keep shooting you. 2 days were short, I'll keep working on it after ratings and add your suggestions.

@roycocup Thank you! In fact I was thinking of Akira's S.O.L. (in both anime and manga) with variations on how its power could raise and release, plus a reactive way to play without a mouse. And Pico's a blast!

People are the power by ElGregos 2017-08-04T16:32:43Z

Thank you guys! The time was a bit short (made it in 2 days) so the balance between weapons is not perfect. Indeed, the Family Gatherer seems the most effective, but the S.O.L. is quite powerful too, depends how you use it. You can almost finish the area if you begin with it. I wish I had more time too to make the areas progression more significant.

As your spaceship covers the entire area, current shooting people damage your armor but not very efficiently because all they have are guns, and you have a spaceship. Things are getting more harmful in later areas though, say 20 and further. You can skip areas by pressing Enter btw.

Once ratings are closed I plan to finish it and add what I couldn't make, like using the extra power harvested to create & improve weapons or spaceship defense, and add different shooting people.

Goal and Crossbones by SkullPixel 2018-04-29T22:29:50Z

Never been much a fan of soccer. That is, until I played with my own head. Thanks @SkullPixel, that was a discovery and a fun game!

Guerrilla Gardening by randomhuman 2018-05-07T08:17:39Z

In case anyone was wondering, yes! arrow keys can be used instead of WASD. So no excuse to ignore this very lovable game. The small scope (one small level, win or lose) perfectly fits the jam. It's fun with just the right challenge: first try was a mess, then I could make it once I understood what to do. Didn't feel the need for a tutorial. Sure it cries for a post jam version with more levels ;). Good game with simple concept and solid gameplay, and again the art is what really shines. I love the palette and simple, very legible graphics, as well as the tunes and sfx.

Flowdrive by Dustyroom 2018-04-29T22:44:25Z

The game has the potential for a full released game: nice concept, cool minimalist graphics and neat music. Controls just need a bit tweaking, esp. once the vehicle is stuck against wall. A very pleasant game still, well done!

The Legend of Block by maesk 2018-05-02T16:42:30Z

Just my kind of games! Check mine to see I'm not kidding ;) I lost some time as, for no reason, I believed you had to drop green pieces from one room to another, and got blocked in one level. Until I understood you just have to click on a piece to keep it from room to room, no need to drop it. Sure I'd enjoy some more levels, but I got same pb, not enough time left! Anyway, really liked your game. Simple and clever use of the theme with nice game mechanic, and neat music too.

Project T.A.R.D.I.S. by Matoux42 2018-04-27T13:05:45Z

Played it for a straight 10 minutes until a "Failed to execute Tardis" error crashed the game (Windows 7 64 bits). But that was fun to play. Mixing shoot'em up and ressource management is a neat idea. Adding new buildings, each with their own kind of research, also reminded me Mega Lo Mania, an old Amiga game, and that's a good thing! My only complain is the lack of sound but hey, it's a jam game, we all had to sacrify something! Anyway, the best game I played this far, mechanics are good, well done!

Golf Slayer by sanjeev 2018-04-27T21:01:15Z

That was fun! And amazingly realistic. This is exactly like golfing with Trump.

Jump, Push, Match by ElGregos 2018-04-24T18:00:18Z

Well, that was in my "Things to remove before submiting game" list, and of course I forgot this one 😅. It's now corrected on the playable game, thanks @dixonary!

Jump, Push, Match by ElGregos 2018-04-25T21:03:06Z

Thanks @rombus! The HTML template is made by ultrabrite, you can take it here: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=31000. Btw I wonder how did you add that "Remap" button on yours ;).

Jump, Push, Match by ElGregos 2018-05-01T13:27:24Z

Thanks @differentname! I hope more games used that option. If you can't finish a level, there are no reasons it should prevent the player to try the next ones.

Jump, Push, Match by ElGregos 2018-05-03T21:43:06Z

Thanks @flatgub! I wish I had time to add more levels though. But chances are high there will be a post-jame version!

Jump, Push, Match by ElGregos 2018-05-10T09:36:27Z

@paulo-brunassi @jin9310 Thanks for enjoying the game! Levels 5 to 8 are a bit hard indeed, it quickly jumps as I only had time for 10 levels, but there will be 32 in the post-jam version. Glad I added that "Next level" option though ;)

Tennis Hero by JeffChen 2018-05-01T09:52:55Z

Love the gameplay simplicity, and the visuals are top notch! That neon aesthetic reminds me puppygames production. Good game, well done!

Pinball Gardener by KianaMosser 2018-05-01T10:31:03Z

While the art is absolutely adorable, the game really well done (well to me it's almost a 5 in every category), there's one big problem that most surely couldn't be fixed during the jam: growing any vegetable costs you more money that you can get by selling it. In fact, each time I sold a carrot or tomato, that brought me 5$ less than what growing it costed. So I don't really see the point in planting any vegetable, since you'll lose 5$ each time. It looks like the best to do is just playing the pinball with the hope of hitting enough bumpers to win money so you can buy more balls. That is, unless I missed something in the pinball, only the bumpers seemed active, the side lanes didn't bring anything.

Some ideas: - The extra balls are special vegetables: you have to plant them and water them. Because if you can just buy them, and only the flipper gives money, what's the point in gardening at all? - In fact, maybe all vegetables can be used as balls? With different effects, both physical (imagine playing with a carrot!) and gameplay wise. - The flipper could also bring water besides money. - Make gardening a key point. Maybe the whole flipper is made of vegetables where you have to replace/enhance bumpers, shooter, add special hits, etc?

Of course, jam restrictions, hence my good notation because anyway, even though it needs a lot of balance, you got a very good concept, and the best use of the jam theme so far.

The Cards You're Dealt by Raindrinker 2018-05-05T10:36:53Z

Perfect game for a jam: small scope, but everything it does, it does it very well. First card game I play too! Was a bit lost at first, then saw a video on youtube and replayed it for a straight hour! In fact, my finger slipped in card selection (1,2,3 keys are a shortcut, but I should have checked the selected card before I clicked🤦‍♂️) and that was a bad choice resulting in instant death, but I'll most surely replay it. Addictive fun and instantly enjoyable game.

Type n' Jump by Richard N Silva 2018-05-05T09:22:30Z

What can I add that have not been said before? Good game! The best I've played this far. I'm not usually fond of spikes ridden platform games, but this one had the perfect balance between difficulty and frustration that allowed me to reach the end. That was fun, bravo!
