LD39 — Running out of Power

BATTER-E by Peredom 2017-07-31T18:33:08Z

Some serious Nuclear Throne vibes, which are good.

First, the art style is absolutely fantastic. Gorgeous game, good animations, just a pleasure to look at. Screenshake is much appreciated, sound effects are all solid, and the music is really nice as well. It's pretty apparent that you spent a good chunk of your time making the game as gorgeous as possible, and it really shows! The fact that your shots get less powerful the more your power decreases is a wonderful implementation of the theme as well.

However, on the gameplay side, I do have a few suggestions. The camera is kinda unwieldy and unpleasant. It moves far too much, far too quickly. Coin drops could also be increased or item cost lowered, as it really isn't all that fun to endlessly farm enemies for powerups. Enemy count could also probably be reduced a bit as well. Finally, a way to quit the game beyond ALT-F4 would be appreciated, as it automatically starts in full screen.

Still, probably one of the prettiest games I'm going to play from LD39. A few tweaks, some expanded content, and I'd purchase this in the future.

They are Watching you. by Maldo19 2017-08-03T18:15:09Z

I also had the issue with clicking outside the screen for when the character was close to the edge, and adding a small border outside the room, where the player can still click, might help with this. Still, I really liked the art and overall atmosphere, as well as the interesting movement mechanic. I enjoyed playing it.

A Shocking Discovery by Conrad Etherton 2017-08-03T19:37:43Z

I absolutely adore the string physics. It does feel like you're flying something around, rather than controlling it directly, which is really nice. The atmosphere is strong as well. Some minor complaints are that the lil wires should be a bit better marked, and there should be a clearer indication of their hitboxes, as well as the kite's with regard to the lightning. Also, there's no reason to switch scenes from the title screen; it's jarring, and would've worked better with paused physics or something. Still, good job, and a fantastic (if a bit dismal) take on the theme.

THUNDER RUNNER by NOFUEL 2017-08-03T19:15:24Z

Nice solid runner. The ability to bounce off the robots is a really nice touch. My only complaint is that the jumping seems a bit floatier than I usually like; with games like this, a snappy feel adds a lot. Still, good job.

Who Wants to be Alive? by ysty 2017-07-31T18:16:58Z

Movement and controls were a bit wonky, and there was no clear indication of when I had the input prompts selected. The font was a bit hard to read as well, though I do appreciate that you made it yourself. Other than that, a good game, especially for the length of the compo. All of the audio is wonderful. Sound effects are good without being annoying or fatiguing, voice-overs are great, and the music is well done. The graphics are nice and simple, but communicate most of what needs to be communicated. Word processing works well, albeit limited, though understandably given the time constraints, and the sense of running out of power, though at the beginning not so apparent, becomes incredibly well communicated through the announcer.

Good job!

Running out of Power by milano23 2017-08-03T19:30:31Z

A decent game. I agree with the other comments that the level generator could use some work. One bug that I occasionally ran into is that the game didn't register completion, and I had to move an extra tile sometimes to get it to work. I like the idea quite a bit though.

Digit Commando by Wispeh 2017-07-31T21:57:45Z

Would have love to seen what you had planned for the full 72 hours, as it feels like a very interesting start to a game. I really enjoy having to balance between looking at the screen and firing and using the numpad to recharge, but once I realize I could just constantly spam space bar, it lost some appeal, so a more active combat mechanic would go a long way. Additionally, a keypad with characters might be nice for those without a numpad on their keyboard, as the arrow keys and number keys is a bit finicky. Still, a lot of potential, and what's there is really nice!

Reactor Defence by Dene 2017-07-31T18:55:31Z

Probably the most fun I've had with a LD39 game so far, and definitely the one I played longest. Graphics are really nice, simple, but expressive, though some animations would be appreciated. Gameplay is nice, simplified, but really satisfying and fun. The constant balance between upgrades and power is really nice, and something I'd like to see expanded on if you ever make another version, maybe with different turret types. Music is nice and satisfying as well, and never gets boring. I'd love to see you guys continue to work on this game.

Only suggestions is that it'd be nice to expand the hitbox for the objects a bit, as sometimes it doesn't register clicks, and a way to see how much power drain each upgrade adds would be nice as well.

Still, incredibly solid, and I really enjoyed it!

Berzerk Hunt by TheFunAttic 2017-08-03T19:56:46Z

A really good first attempt at a game jam! The graphics are really really nice, and I appreciate how many different animations you added to the main character. The controls were a bit of an issue though. It'd frequently lock up into a certain direction, or just not read any input. An indicator of where the viking is going to slash based on your mouse position would also be appreciated. With that being said, it's a really wonderful take on the theme, and a fantastic start to game jams.

Toast Up! by gwinnell 2017-08-03T18:32:10Z

I adore this. The concept is wonderful and something I didn't expect. The graphics are simple but really nice, and the color pallete is really easy on the eyes. The sound is good and never gets grating, and there's lots of nice audio and visual feedback for every action. I agree with some of the other posters, though, that the game has a really low skill ceiling, and the upgrades kinda feel like a clicker game's upgrades more than anything else. If you ever revisit this, making the gameplay more skill based would be really nice. Still, a wonderful game.

Energy Bomb ( 2 Player) by Sir Mr Dr Prof Sr Jr PhD 2017-07-31T22:22:47Z

Movement mechanics are nice, and the gameplay mechanics are something I've never seen before. Graphics could use a bit of work, however, and it doesn't quite integrate with the theme as much as I'd like. Still, good work for your first submission.

Wayside : A world awaits you by TheCodeFactory 2017-07-31T18:06:21Z

First off, the graphics are really rather nice. Good color scheme, nice simple visuals, and easy to tell what is what (for the most part, but I'll get to that in a bit.) The variety of music is appreciated as well, and I do like how simple the gameplay mechanic is. I did have a few issues with the game, however. The graphics for the goal are a bit unclear, both in what they're supposed to be, and what the hitbox is. I found there were times that I thought I wouldn't be able to beat the level where I ended up winning, and vice versa. The movement physics seemed a bit less precise than I'd want for something with instakill spikes. Finally, the bar for indicating the power isn't as apparent as it could be. I didn't notice it at all the first few levels. Still, the concept is solid, it's a very pleasant game to look at, and it'd port wonderfully to mobile. A few tweaks and I'd love to give it another shot.

The Breach by Vlad Chechyotkin 2017-07-31T22:08:54Z

Incredibly pretty, as mentioned previously. The robot corpses being left behind is also a very nice touch! However, even for a challenging game, it's a bit unforgiving. No matter how I approached it, I rarely ever got very far. The character physics also seemed a bit weightless. Still, good use of the theme, gorgeous, and something I'd like to revisit if you guys come back to it.

Energy Dash by Shell Pirate 2017-07-31T22:31:27Z

Nice looking game! The sprites are decent, but the background and terrain tiles are absolutely gorgeous. Thankful for the ingame instructions as well. Having to balance restoring the worlds' power, and your own health, is a nice mechanic. I would've just liked a bit more variety with the enemies and the level. Good entry though!

Pepe, The Power Plant by RobotsAndMuffins 2017-08-03T19:50:19Z

Really rather cute! I agree with others though that it's much too easy, and boils down to keep on moving right. It'd be nice if the mountains, rather than just serving as the background, potentially block the sun's rays.

Sleepy Orphan Simulator by Barney Cumming 2017-08-03T19:09:29Z

This game is truly remarkable. The graphics are fantastically done, if disturbing, and the soundscape is actually haunting and I love every bit of it. I'm not the biggest fan of using control+the arrow keys to switch between body parts, and would've rather it was mapped to different letter keys instead, but the actual gameplay is wonderful. I was frequently running into issues where I'd have tangled my boy's arms all up in knots, but rather than being frustrated, I enjoyed the difficulty that it added.

You did so many cool things, I'm probably gonna dive into the code to see how you did it. Very well done!

Pixel Driver by CG_Fred 2017-08-03T18:41:33Z

I enjoy this. Graphics are nice and clean, sound is good, and the vehicle falling apart on collision is a really nice touch that adds a lot. The coin spawn seems a bit inconsistent however, so the distance you can go seems rather luck based (though I might just be bad!) One thing I feel that would add a lot is go whole hog with the collisions, and have your car's main body go flying, instead of just kinda floating static. Really enjoyed this, and great job for 23 hours!

Dying (Phone) Light by neurofuzzy2 2017-08-03T19:20:55Z

It's a nice little idea, but the difficulty is a bit much. It doesn't seem like there's any skill involved, and rather you're reliant entirely on the RNG.

Tank Empty by JSMCAG 2017-07-31T22:13:36Z

The graphics are hard to read against the background, and the sound effects could use a bit of polish. Still, game itself is rather solid. Very nice for only 6 hours!
