LD38 — A Small World

Solitary Freedom by CMLSC 2017-05-02T14:55:56Z

I finished it like on 0:23? I closed the last screen too fast so I'm sorry for the time thingy. If I had to say some critism it would be that the spikes are turned on and off too fast, It felt more unfair than challenging, It's more of an issue on the last level. Overall a fun little game.

Calor by stevenjmiller 2017-05-02T02:15:59Z

I can apreciate the effort that this game took, It's a big game that has a lot of potential but as it stands It's execution was really too ambitious. That tutorial wasn't a good idea but as it's a complex game is understandable. The game needs to give some feedback in a way that you can understand what everything does, For example if I have a solar panel directly facing the sun it should show the amount of energy that I'm getting from that. If you implement things like that it should be easier to not get lost.

TLDR: It's really a nice idea but it needs more ways in which it gives it feedback.

Routine by Breno_M 2017-05-04T04:39:02Z

The graphics are soo good it really helped the theme a lot, some of the comments already said that you could take this and make it into a full fledge game. My only critism is that is not fun to be waiting that much, I would have liked to choose a day to jump and see if they met each other, as waiting so much for them to see the day they could meet is a lot of time. Great job!

PS: A Bug I got was that I accidentally won the whole game without finishing all the meetings between them, I was on the second "mission" and all 3 met on the same spot and the game just told me that I got them all and I had to use esc to exit the game. I hope this is useful.

I Just Wanted Groceries by Jedeen 2017-05-09T04:42:33Z

Nice idea for a game, It's little and simple. I like that the chats change everytime and that you always change character. The music and the Sfx were really on point(!). The only thing I really disliked was that you have to reload the game everytime you wanted to play. Nice job!

Chroma by Megalink 2017-05-04T05:07:38Z

It's a fun game. I have some nitpicks though, the collision is weird I got stucked on a wall while dashing and bullets have a problem when I tried to do some diagonal shooting. The last one is a special issue because of the path with the four enemies at the end where they are surronded by walls as the enemies' bullets can't reach the player because of the wall collisions. Other than that and that the bosses are too easy (I just stand still near the left wall) I would say that this is a good game, good job.

King of the world by Linus 2017-05-03T21:54:14Z

I like this type of games, they are pretty fun to waste some time on. The only thing I didn't like was having time clocking down for a turn to end, I would have liked if it were a little longer and after I made my choice it would let me skip for the next turn. Another thing I would have liked to have is that if someone is attacking one of my countries I would like to know which one it is (or pointing me out to it someway instead of just saying the country's name) before I use my time to check on it. I hope this feedback is useful. Good job.

Spider Collider by mooncalf 2017-05-02T03:27:32Z

It's a pretty good game, I really liked the music even if it didn't match the game itself. The spider looks awesome and the game idea is pretty good.

Some nitpicks: It's a little bit buggy in the collisions if the planets move really fast, and you can cheat if you mash the space bar so the spider jumps between planets too fast.

D.A.D.S. (Destitute Agoraphobic Dad Simulator) by chunkybrewster 2017-05-04T02:08:16Z

This concept is great, but I have some problems with the implementation, I felt that anything that I did was for nothing and I can hear you say "that is the point" but you gave some feedback with every action that the player took so I felt that there was a system there.

(little spoilers ahead if anyone hasn't played this) I liked the writing but I felt that the game was really against the dad for some reason but is never actually said(I don't know if that is great or bad) and the way It shames hims has a good dose of dark humor that I apreciate, as well the dark context that surrounds this game.

I really liked the pixel art and the music worked on this, but the sfx made me feel that there was something more going on for some reason and I don't know if that was intended or not. This entry is a little tricky to comment so I'm sorry if this comment is not being helpful. Good job.

coollapse by nicruo 2017-05-05T06:42:17Z

I beat it in 36 seconds (that's good isn't? I played twice and my first time I didn't realize that I had to touch just the red ones so that's the second time record), I think you have added some places where you can't bounce into as there was anything stopping you going yo directly into the red pieces. You could expand this a lot if you add something like "enemies" and blocked paths so you would have to think before letting the ball bounce. I liked this concept and if you develop it you could have a nice mobile game (as you only can move right or left) or even a full fledged one if you feel ambitious. I would liked to hear some sfx for the bounces as you didn't need anything fancy for it. And I was surprised when the ball was going to fall but it change the axis from where it would fall, nice thinking there, you could use it for more "puzzle" mechanics if you wish to continue working on this.

Run, U Fool! by zgragselus 2017-05-04T06:07:43Z

I really like how this looks and the ideas behind it, but the execution is weird. It doesn't have tension even if it is a supposed race against time as the music doesn't reflect that you want to get safe as fast as possible and the stage begins it's destruction when you're already "safe"(not in the elevator thingy but near it just waiting the change of color). If you die you already know what road you have to go to win that stage.

Oh and I felt that the tutorial wasn't funny, you could cut it and the change of color would still be clear to the player, so I felt that it was meant to construct some narrative. because of that, when I was playing I was expecting that the setting was a game show or something like it, because of how you are instructing the player and how the "narrator" had a personallity that belittled you. So I was expecting some kind of resolution at the end.(Please don't take it as a "you should've cutted it")

This game has potential, it is a nice idea and if you want to expand on it I would like to see how it ends, It's graphics are awesome, the writting has a lot of personality.(you could use it more between levels or something like that)

Overall it's a good game, I hope this feedback helps and I would like to see what you guys do next.

Run, U Fool! by zgragselus 2017-05-04T19:18:56Z

@pavel-kouril About the tutorial cutting I said that just because the mechanics were simple, I don't know what your previous game was but this one is simple enough for you to try the mechanic a couple of times (If you remove all the dialog in the tutorial part it would still made sense because of how you structured the tutorial level). And please don't take it as you should have it removed, I liked it because you guys used it in your favor as it was building a narrative.

@zgragselus So now I understand why you made the tutorial that way, I feel that a tutorial is a neccesity when your mechanics are complicated but when the only thing you can do in this game is moving with WASD and just waiting for the character's colors to match the ones in the doors there is not much to explain. (this matches with what I wrote to your partner)

For the music you just need to make a track with a faster tempo, you don't need something too fancy, and if you really want to put more enphasis on it you could make the tempo faster as time goes on.

For the difficulty part maybe it was because I realized that if you stand still waiting for your color to change in front of a door is easier than keep moving to the other door that has your matching color. So it worked in almost all levels except the final level or the previous one (the one which you're running until there are 3 doors with the 3 different colors) as you die if you don't match it in one go.

And thank you guys for having a good reception for this feedback, I hope this comment is useful.

It's A Small World by danman9914 2017-05-04T07:51:20Z

That twist man, the art is superb, that storytelling is simple, engaging and mysterious. I really liked the story and emotions that this has, it is really interesting and your writing is superb. Now for the nitpicks/feedback the music was a little too repetitive, I would have liked if it had a little more variation like having some deep instruments to give even more sensation of "something is wrong" and that would made the music more interesting. And I would have liked more attention on the gameplay like instead of going from left to right you could have some variations acording to the events happening on the story. Of course this are just nitpicks. This entry is one of my favorites. Amazing Job!

The Morix Colony by Somnium 2017-05-04T00:45:33Z

I love this kind of games, so I enjoyed this one as well, it's one of my favorites of this LD. Now to the nitpicks: I had to agree with the comments saying that the pirate attacks were too frequent. I really don't like that in the beginning my poor little planet was attacked everytime a event would show up. As my workers died defending the planet there was a point I didn't defend myself anymore as paying the pirates with whatever was a safer choice than letting my workers die. Now I don't know if my game was bugged or not because I had like 6 workers total, I think that I misunderstood what it meant to upgrade the amount of workers in each category, so It's kind of pointless having 6 workers total working on one place as with 3/3 is enough to beat the game (as long as you just skip to the events)

Now for the event system... I thought that is kind of pointless advancing day by day as just using the skip to next event button. If you were to keep working in this game you could give some reasons to do so, like a working morale system or something that appears in a day by day basis and that would be skipable (causing to decrease worker's morale) or something like that.

And I would have liked if the event system wouldn't show the events that are related to upgrades if you have every one of them, (As I had to keep just closing the window when the tech guys asked me to upgrade something) like you did with the new worker's spawns when you have all workers' slots used.

The writing was nice and the UI was good enough, but I would have liked to see something else as a background instead of the pure white.

Sorry for the wall of text, I just really like this kind of games, Hope this is useful. Great game,

My Purpose by Maldo19 2017-05-03T03:55:07Z

Thank you all for your comments! This is my first LD and I was pretty nervous for putting something like this, I'm really happy with how is being recieved so I'm really grateful. I just updated this game's page to add a web version, so feel free to try it @simonhutchinson hope it works well for everybody.

My Purpose by Maldo19 2017-05-04T07:01:07Z

Thank you everybody for commenting, I'm going to adress some of the comments/feedback that I think it would be useful for other people playing.

@hector-pineiro-ii if you can click the enemies the it shoots to that enemy, it doesn't need to be aligned with the shot. I agree with the health drops and the UI, I didn't have time to test health drops as it was the last thing to be included in the game. It could be a bug if you saw a enemy spawning near or maybe was just a ship that you didn't saw either way you're right and it was unfair. I'm grateful for this feedback, thank you a lot.

@chris-delta The mini map shows you were the planet is, and if you are having problem to find it you can use the middle click mouse to point the spaceship in it's direction. I agree that the UI for the planet needs to be bigger though. thank you for the feedback!

@glimaleite Well that's what happens when you don't develop the game thinking on how to "cheat" on your own game, It's weird that it never occur to me to do that. But I don't understand what's bad with the controls if you just found a weakness on the game design itself. Thank you for pointing this out to me.

@klekky It didn't occur to me how to explain them better in game, I'm really sorry you had problems with them. @simonhutchinson good ear! I used some samples from the super metroid soundfont to give it a "space feeling".

@frenchie About the bug part that's weird, did you played the web version? If so I encourage you to play the desktop one, If it is the desktop one well... I'm really sorry. This game has a ending, after finishing the 5 "levels", the story part that follows is the ending and when that ends it just throws you at the main menu.

It's a Small World, So Let's Crash It into Things by simonhutchinson 2017-05-02T05:57:54Z

I really liked the use of enemy into the agar.io formula as it made it something different. The enemy followed me for a long while so It sorta change into how can I overcome this path of little planets blocking my path before the enemy could destroy the planet. It was a fun experience.

Rocket Roller Space Polo by pkenney 2017-05-03T04:29:31Z

Fun game, the only thing I can think of to say as feedback is that some times I got so far away that I couldn't touch the planet so I think that you could use the down key you could fall a little faster. I would like to see how this turns up if you add multiplayer and a Good AI for the robots. It would be a fun party game to play.

Merhygen by rokasv 2017-05-03T22:23:52Z

It's a nice prototype and a good concept, my issue with this game is that it crashed everytime I played and there was no pattern that I got from it so I can tell you what I did to crash it. I liked the art and it's a shame that you had to opt out from them. I would have liked more random things on it to make it more interesting. Good Game.

Polar Protector by AlexHoratio 2017-05-02T21:01:55Z

The change elements mechanic is a nice one, it really gives this game more depth. About the controls my hand began to feel weird after playing a little while as the change between "F" and "Space" I would have liked to use the mouse to shoot and the secondary click for absorbing the element. (It may be a little nitpicky but well it could help) The graphics were simple enough and worked and the audio was good enough. Good job! (Oh, I forgot to say nice job on the planet's orbit for the bullets too)

You Are World. by amras0000 2017-05-02T06:43:34Z

I can't say I have much criticsm for this game, the mood is great and it has a nice theme. But what I can say about this is that I didn't have much fun with it, the turtle moved really slow and I went too far away so it was a lot of time wasted just waiting for the turtle going to point A to point B.

As for it's mechanics it is really simple so I hope that If you want to expand on this you could give more weight to the gameplay aspect of pairing the ground to make life prosper because I felt that I won without even understanding what did I do right.

Hope this helps.

The Core by ectucker1 2017-05-03T02:30:46Z

I enjoyed the puzzles until the introduction of portals, as the puzzles aren't really designed with portals in mind, In almost all the portal stages there is a way to just place the two portals and win, in one point I had like 7 or 8 extra pieces so you want to reconsider them a little more if you are going to expand this game. It was good Overall. Oh and by the way consider leaving the cursor in the game or changing for a custom one as sometimes it was confusing as I didn't know where the mouse was. (Another detail, does it crash when you beat it? or is it bugged?)

Invaders of Yekithar by skippuku 2017-05-02T03:07:27Z

I found it a little too barebones I would like to see some power ups or enemy variation (unless they appear after a certain score if so please disregard). That aside I felt that the character was too slippery so the platform jump was a little too difficult if your aim was to be fast and move from a tower to tower, and I liked the gun's recoil, it was a good idea for player camping.

It's a Small World by NedMakesGames 2017-05-04T03:14:36Z

This is one of the few games that I don't know what kind of feedback I could give, it is really polished and is fun. What I can say is that the controls felt too "restricted" and I really hated that the "retrys" just reset everything as that has a lot of wait time. I liked how the concecutive jumps made you reach much higher and the feedback Audio/Graphic to get the hearts (and in general) is really good. So great job! I hope this comment is useful.

Ghostscaling by STUDIOCRAFTapps Developpement 2017-05-02T02:56:28Z

I don't know if the collision system is working or not, I didn't find a way to past the first level. I used the big block but I couldn't levitate with it and it was impossible to activate the switches.

I didn't like the camera as it's field of view was to small unless you scale a lot. if you're small then you can't see if the enemies are attacking you.

Hope I was just dumb and didn't realize the puzzle and not the game's problem. but I liked the concept and would like see the ghost possesing more stuff for other abilities.

Ghostscaling by STUDIOCRAFTapps Developpement 2017-05-03T01:12:24Z

@studiocraftapps-developpement I booted it again, the thing is that the switches didn't gave the feedback that they were pressed so I didn't noticed that the passages were opened(As I didn't think that a ghost is able to touch switches). But the most important thing is that I couldn't move the blockie vertically (their gravity doesn't allow them to go up) so I couldn't use them at all to "kill" the flames (Maybe you tied the gravity to the framerate?). And please don't think that I don't get your game (In my previous comment I said: "I didn’t like the camera as it’s field of view was to small unless you scale a lot", so clearly I did scale the ghost), I really gave it time but it's frustrating to not have some basic feedback when you touch switches just make them change sprites with one with less length. Sorry if you think I'm too harsh and for the wall of text.

PixelWorld by Dom Harris 2017-05-05T07:34:24Z

I wasn't expecting the Random generation, good job with that. I think that the controls need a little work, I never felt that I was truly controlling the character on my keyboard (I was using the web version if you need to know) I liked the power ups and I really think that it was fun to be able to destroy a lot of things with the power ups. The music was good enough and you had good player feedback. My other problem is with the red things, they are a little unfair. I would have liked to see real enemies instead. And I don't know if this was a design choice or not but I almost got stuck on the bottom edge of the screen because I destroyed a lot of the floor and I was unable to get back up. If you are going to work mor on this I would suggest some unbreakable parts to climb if you need. Overall it is a pretty fun game. Good job!

Core Fall by Pickler 2017-05-02T04:15:18Z

A little too simple, but enjoyable. My only problem with it is that it goes too fast so you can't really dodge or try to get the power ups it would be nice if it had some kind of icon alert at the bottom telling you that a power up/ damage object is near.

Itsa Pixel! by damnscout 2017-05-02T22:41:14Z

This concept was pretty good and the use of shapes and colors to determine what you can actually collect was a nice idea, however it's really difficult and as It is random you can lose all your progress just because the game wanted to. I beat the game but I felt that a lot of my time was lost just because the game threw at me so much objects, as the "pixel" is too big and slow to dodge them all. I feel that you make the "pixel" smaller, a little faster and put the color bars with a transparency alpha on some side it would be much easier and overall a more enjoyable game. Overall a Good game, good job on your first game.

Legends Of Block by sagarpatel25700 2017-05-02T15:12:02Z

There is potential on this kind of game, I liked the player feedback you give, the sounds and flashes are good. There are some bugs that discouraged me from playing the way I wanted, I don't like to waste bullets and I was dissapointed that when I picked up ammo it change my bullet count from 10 to 7. The dash attack is not really a good one as I felt more that I hurt myself. I would have liked that if you jumped on an enemy it would be counted as an Attack too as you put an enfasis on vertical movement but you didn't capitalized on it. I think that you could implement holding down the space bar to use the jetpack instead of the left shift it would help on to make the controls a little bit more intuitive and easier.

Overall this is a good base if you want to build on it.

Kanjo by Kataware 2017-05-17T07:28:53Z

This game is a little weird to judge as it is, I was entrigued by the description and the setting, I would liked to see it with a little more polishing. It felt really weird having to press Esc to advance the intro and the cutscenes.

The audio is superb I really have nothing to say about that, you really did something special with it, you know how create a mood with it. That combined with the scenes with only text made a really good mood. I think that the only thing bad with it is that you need to learn that you don't have to put it everywhere (I know that is confusing) ,but what I mean is that you could have put just background noise in the loneliness segment to really emphasize the mood on that part, sometimes not having audio (or having just background noise) is fine to add to your mood.

Now on to the writing, I'm not a writer by any means (I'm just a hackfraud one, so this will sound a little nitpicky), but I found it weird that you had a player character that doesn't have dialogue at the beginning and it's just implied with the blonde guy but in the loneliness part she talks. The blonde kid has a problem of having too much exposition to tell, you really want to take those parts of the history of your game and reveal them as little as you can, you need to create intrigue with your lore so the player cares when the history is finally revealed (why exactly did your world lost emotion? Is this a test from a God? Or is this a punishment? those are questions that people want to know the answer but they want to earn them). But it is really weird considering that you did that really good on the text only parts. The text only parts and the character only parts really felt like two different narratives. So they really clash at the end when you see the two characters struggling to be together while showing their dialogue.

For the graphics part, my only nitpick here is the palette that you used, the colors where too close to each other, so the details that you wanted to add were lost. Try practicing using limited palettes to get a grip on what colors you want to use to make details. Your graphic effects were on point, the text effects and the sakura blossoms were nice. And I really liked smiley man and his "death" animation (I saw it twice as the first time it appears that it doubled KO'd me.

I'm sorry if this comment looked too harsh, but I read that you want to keep working on this so I wanted to give you the best feedback that I could, You really have good bases to work on from now on I hope that you achieve your full vision in the future. Good luck with your game and Good work!

A Growing Adventure by frankiesmileshow 2017-05-02T15:55:48Z

The Art man, it really makes this looks soo good! I really liked the execution of the theme and Idea. If you make this someway random generated it would be amazing. And seeing you make this on stream was a treat. I don't have much critism sadly, as the other ones already pointed out the "flaws" this entry had. Great Job!

Crater Creator by navot 2017-05-09T04:26:46Z

I really liked the gags, they were good. I liked your concept as it is really innovative and I liked how you implemented everything in the game. The controls are a little tricky, but it is weird because if you change them too much it would trivialize the game. Also nice work on the use of colors for showing the distance and hinting the trayectory collision point it really is a clever mechanic. Nice job!

Libre by DiegoCTorguet 2017-05-05T07:20:58Z

The puzzle part is really the weakest part of this game, having to examine each tile to see what tile is the one you need is not really fun and as there is not feedback on the exchange of tiles I had to check again if the tile changed or not so it wasn't much fun. I felt that the graphics didn't live up to the mood you created as they are a little too cartoony or bright(you could have use more black and a little of bloom to give it more enphasis on the sci-fi setting).

This comment may sound like it is harsh and nitpicky but I really liked the ambition that you had for this, using real acting was a bold and innovative idea. You know how to build a mood and it is a nice game.

I hope this comment is useful. Buen trabajo.

SmlWhrld - A Puzzle by OldeTobeh 2017-05-02T20:50:32Z

I got too big and my cube was too small so by an accident the cube went flying away (I only touched it) without me able to get it. After that I just moved a little and fell through the world... That was when I realized that the game doesn't have any reset button so I was just stuck, please consider having a reset button for the future. I really liked the concept idea but I think it is a little too ambitous as you can break the game quite easily if you scale up too much. I would like to see this concept a little more elaborate in the future as it's a nice idea to build upon.

Stable Orbit by mrspeaker 2017-05-02T20:35:13Z

Liked the concept and gameplay. I really wanted some feedback on an objective to do, as just having a stable orbit is not something fun as an only task to do. Sfx and music fitted the game nicely. Overall a nice game.

Sillyzilla Rampage by Eric Florio 2017-05-03T04:15:41Z

The concept of this game was pretty cool, I really liked the idea of destroying everything and the limb mechanic to kill the humans. As the other comments were saying I think that it was a little too slow, I think that just a small change in speed would work so much. Good Job!

Little Wild Invasion by Titangea 2017-05-17T06:29:23Z

I liked the gameplay idea and the graphics. I feel that the Audio was a weird choice, it lacked tension in a game that you have to run and survive. The enemies were cool but they really weren't a threat if you don't take unnecesary turns while you move. The thing I really disliked were those giant bubbles, as they just fell without a warning and just killed me time to time. I tried to use them to kill the enemies but more often than not I died more than them.

I found pretty excesive that you had to fill the whole bar just to run faster. I would really liked if you could use it as a stamina for running more than a single use run. I think that it could add more depth to your game. Overall It's a very nice idea and I really liked the visuals, Nice job!

Tiny Battle World by NickW 2017-05-02T02:30:09Z

Played with some people online, it was really fun. Good job!

_Save_ by iamteekay 2017-05-02T16:09:32Z

It looks like we had the same Idea for a game so It's a little weird to judge this entry but I'm going to do it either way.

I had a little problem with the hit stopping when breaking a lot of objects with the beam as it appeared like the game was lagging instead of the hit stop. I really liked the different powerups but I had a problem with them as they almost didn't change much the attack power between them, as they spawn a lot you often have to choose which one you want but as they are almost the same in attack power then that decision is meaningless. I really like the graphics too and the player feedback that they give is nice.

As it is, this is a fun game, it just needs a little more polishing. Good job!

Aether Mine by merrak 2017-05-02T15:29:27Z

It's easy to see the ambition that this game has, It has a nice mood and I really liked the graphics. The audio was a little weak but it really fits. I would like to see this one grow more as it's a really cool base game. Just let your ambition grow a little more. Good job!

World of My Own by kantieno 2017-05-02T02:39:27Z

It's a good concept but it's really barebones I would liked to see more personality on the world/character. As little details I would have liked if your bullets changed if you upgrade them And I didn't like that you can change rooms if you're only above the "exit tiles" as it was an open area opposed a dungeon with a door like Zelda.

As it is, this is something that you can build upon, it's a nice base. So hope you keep working on this.

LD39 — Running out of Power

Frankenstorm by TerraCottaFrog 2017-08-08T02:38:27Z

I didn't know what I expected from this one before I played, I really had a lot of fun with this game, more than the majority of games I played for this LD.

If I had to give some feedback is that the rain drops' randomess was really unforgiving, it killed more than every other thing. Every time I died to the rain I felt it wasn't fair, but it wasn't frustrating enough due to having infinite lives. The downside is that as someone said before it makes it lack tension and that is something that most shmups depend on, without it you don't feel like you have to dodge the incoming attacks.

And a real small thing is that I would have liked to have an additional X for the jumping as my mind was too focused on dodging with the right hand that I forgot that I could jump. Overall I really liked this one, the sfx didn't get old for me and the graphics looked great, I like your style. Great Job!

CHAINED by Mr. Chelnoque 2017-08-07T03:44:31Z

This is a really great game, I really liked the graphics the tree was really cool, the smoke helped a lot to the mood and I really liked how the chains were used. The audio wasn't distracting and helped to boost the mood a lot. The audio, graphics and the mood really compliment each other. It's one of the better looking games I have played for this LD.

The only downside is the gameplay, it wouldn't hurt having an optional keyboard support as the mouse didn't feel as good trying to dodge and attack. I get what you tried to do with the mouse and it being more exact than using a keyboard, the real problem is that the area is too small if you compared it with the amount of movement that you do with the mouse. About the enemies, I think you guys have a problem with the enemies that can attack you and the enemies that you need to attack with your other form. In other games it would be easier as they would have to just change their color to get them more distinguished but in this one it would clash with the palette you have, If I had to solve this it would be making the enemies that can hurt you more bigger, at least 1.5 the size they are currently so you can detect them with just a glance.

Overall this game is one of my favorites of the LD, I really liked it. Excellent Job!

FRIEND-1 by everythingWasBees 2017-07-31T22:28:22Z

I really liked the graphics, the sound was good for the mood and the game was fun. If I had to fix something would be lowering the top speed of the ship or expanding the view of the game, as you don't have time to react when the big meteors appeared. Good game.

Trials of the Vapor Lattice by oxysoft 2017-08-06T07:36:12Z

The graphics, audio and mood were superb, I really liked the text effect you used, and how the game looked. The combat in the other side it needs a little polish, I would have added something like a shield with limited energy to counter act the lasers and bullets that you really aren't able to dodge with the distance you are given. I don't think you should have the combat removed, I really liked it, the enemies were interesting and they really added to the mood of the game. Amazing job!

They are Watching you. by Maldo19 2017-08-07T23:11:46Z

Thank you everyone for your comments, I'm sorry you had a lot of trouble because of the difficulty, I tried to make this one easier than my last entry but It seems that I failed in that regard.

I wanted to respond to some particular feedback by @Batheo3000 and @Junber that resumed the overall feeling with the game.

"The game is way too harsh"

As I developed the game I thought it wasn't too hard but the thing when you develop this kind of games is that because you're testing it you become better at it so it's hard to measure it's difficulty, I'm sorry about this I will try to make something more easier next time. If anyone is having too much trouble with this try to just use the beam in lower bursts than have it all the time.

"Why would you have to reset to the start of the game?"

As this is a small game I wanted to do things that you can't do on other games, like carry on these things. If I would have used the normal philosophy of design I would have removed the timer, and make a finite amount of energy for each level (as @gwinnell noted and it was considered when I was making this), but it would have make this even more generic and it would have removed something that made it different of the norm, it would become just another "hard platformer" without any interesting ideas. It appears that mixing these concepts with the controls was a bad idea so... I'm sorry about that.

"The controls are way too frustratung and inconsistent"

It comes to experimenting with new ways to control things. Some like it and others don't. I still need more experience to get the right balance, so... again, I'm sorry.

"Combat was hard by its very nature and giving all the enemies (except for the long-ish ones) a lot of HP didn’t help."

I wanted to discourage killing the enemies as a safe way to win, if the enemies had smaller hp they would be dead in a breeze, but I wanted that you kill some select ones and the others are just for you to decide if it would be wise to kill them and advance or losing more time trying to clear the stage without killing them.

"Clicking outside the window"

...I'm really sorry.

I think that's all the negative points that people brought up. I'm really thankful for all of the comments and for your views on this game. For the positive points, I'm really happy if you enjoyed this game or if you found something good that you could enjoy, Thank you everyone for taking your time to play this and even more thanks to each of you that comment giving me your thoughts.

TL;DR: Game is too difficult because I wanted to experiment with mechanics, I'm thankful to you for taking your time to play/comment. (I should put another I'm sorry here, but it's getting old...)

They are Watching you. by Maldo19 2017-08-13T20:35:58Z

For the Compo rules I'm not able to update the game, but I have been fixing a lot of stuff I'm planning to expand this to a small free game.

@willdata I lowered the speed a little and it works really well, so considered it done.

@mickeyg I'm going to explain what happened with the timer thing. When I played through the game, I could end it like in 2:30 ~ 3:00 minutes, so I thought that people could clear it on 5 minutes... That was a fatal mistake. And you're right. For the expansion to this I have already fixed the timer thing. I changed it a little so it's more like optional ranks more than a requisite. Thank you, I'm glad that you liked it!

@shru For the fullscreen/window thing I already solved it, but as I said before, because of the compo rules I can't update it... I'm sorry. But in the "expansion" It's already solved. And you're 100% correct on how this works, for the resistance stuff I tweeked it a little so it doesn't feel like it's an intense resistance. But the part of the acceleration feeling is something that I don't know if I'm completly sold on, I will try it anyway to see if you're correct with the feeling. Thank you for your comment!

If you're interested on the "expansion" please follow me on itch/twitter so you will be notified about it when it comes out. Thank you for playing!

Lead by pvtroswold 2017-07-31T21:04:49Z

I liked the concept, but I would prefer if there was a lose state or something like that. I really liked the music, and the weird background was a good touch.

PutOuter by ginger9 2017-08-01T22:52:37Z

It's a nice little game, I played the compo version as I felt that It wasn't right to play with an added feature after the time limit. I liked that you can put on and off the pads but it would be a little easier to know that if you added a small green light to let the player know that you can do that. the art was good and I would have liked to have some sound effects to the game.

Solar-Powered Guns by eva 2017-08-16T04:11:44Z

I really liked the graphics, the sprites looked really nice and the explosion effect was good.

Hopeless Space by KonH 2017-08-06T07:15:30Z

This space shooter is a little barebones you could add some other enemies/levels to give it a little more variety, I liked the idea of limited energy for the shooting and once I got the controls down I could move the ship with ease, the only bad side to the controls is that if an enemy is to near to the ship it will become too difficult to control. It lacked some polish as the others have said.

Hydrocrypt by shru 2017-08-13T22:02:42Z

This was a really fun game, doing a random generated game in this short amount of time is insane. The visuals are great, I really liked the scanline effect and the static effects. The characters are nice and the color choices really set the tone. The music was good, it didn't distract from the game but it wanted you to be somewhat tense, so it was a nice compliment. And... I really liked the humor on this. So from now on, I'm going to be nitpicking...

What I didn't like about the game was that you couldn't see enemy bullets in the dark, The game encourages you to be as fast as possible, so if you're rushing you can just be shot without having a warning. To resolve this I had to shoot all times so I can see where the bullets are coming from and dodge them. I don't know if it was the intended way or not.

Another thing I would have liked is that if you have your life full and there is a health pickup, the pickup either gave you a little more life (think it like the blue hearts on the Binding of Isaac if you're familiar with it) or have them change to other powerups, so that your travel to the item isn't wasted because you had full life.

And lastly, this is just an idea, but you could add some rooms that can't be accessed if they don't have light, so you can't have the powerup/treasure they have if you don't arrive in time. So you could encourage even more the speed aspect and having some reward to it.

Overall I really liked this game, I would like to see what you come with if you were to do a post-jam version.

Hydrocrypt by shru 2017-08-16T03:24:21Z

Oh no... That's embarassing. I'm so sorry for having said that without realizing that the health pickup did exactly that... I'm dumb.

Overcharged by lectvs 2017-08-05T07:39:34Z

This game was really fun, it's really clever with the use of the theme, the audio here was nice, the graphics were really nice they really gave this game a lot of personality. The game had a lot of attention to detail and it shows, it was really nice to have 2 endings for the ways that the player wanted to play.

If I had to give some criticism it would be that the bullets should be a little more powerful as they really aren't too useful. If you don't want to kill anybody the shots almost do nothing so they can be ignored, and if you want to kill everybody, it's better to just run straight to them instead of shooting them. As how they are the bullets don't add anything to the game.

Great job with this entry.

Power or die by Aterlamia 2017-07-31T21:52:57Z

I got unlimited power without knowing anything, well... that guy's trust in my skills wasn't for nothing I think. Joking aside I really like this type of games but the winning condition is really weird, as I said before I won just by putting some buildings up fast and then just using the "research center" usually in this type of games you win by achiving some conditions like amount of colonists, coal or power left. The game really needs more information about the game's elements. But kudos on trying this kind of game, if you work a little more on this it would be a nice one to expand on.

Salvage! by frankiesmileshow 2017-08-02T23:37:52Z

This game is really good, however it needs a way to tell if the place you're going to has parts for your ship before entering the area so you don't waste time/energy. The other things are more nitpicky as they have to do with tweeking the weapon's strength so some could be more useful, and bringing down the OP of some weapons like the rocket. But everything I said are more nitpicks, the music is really good and enjoyable to listen, the graphics are excellent, great work!

THIRST by Togis 2017-08-07T04:08:18Z

I liked the concept of this game, Putting together a road for you to move is fun, however the game is really based in luck (I won't talk about the tile choosing as someone else already did), when I played there wasn't much of a indication of where the exit was, I tried to use the radar but it used too much power and it just told me that I was at the same distance as the last time I checked. I would liked if the radar would light up an area so you can get a better hint to where is the exit, if you want to still use your current system I would recommend to reduce the radar cost so you can check more frequently so you can reduce the luck factor a little more.

Luvius by Anudin 2017-07-31T23:19:29Z

I had a lot of trouble getting to know when I was able to choose a door, and when I got it wrong the game resetted way to fast so when I click past the "Level" screen the game sometimes takes it like two inputs and makes me lose again. The "gameover" voice plays when I'm already choosing a door so it added more to the confusion. Give the player a clear indication that it choose correctly and if you lose try to change to another screen or something else before resetting the level. The other thing is that you can loose way too quickly, you can hear some steps just before you lose, so try to give the player some time without any noise and then the steps sounds. It will benefict your game a lot because you can scare the player and at the same time that it will feel more just.

It's a innovative game and I really liked your idea for it. I hope this is the kind of comment you wanted. (And please don't play/comment on my game if you aren't interested on it, I wanted to play yours and comment on it because I found it interesting)

Power by KRP 2017-08-01T23:06:40Z

This was a really fun game once you realize how to get the instructions working, I would have liked to have a list command or something to see what the commands are ingame instead of using the instruction file. I think that the enemies should move even slower at the beginning so you can get the hang of it before you get swarmed. And I would have liked that the game used more words like "attack" because for some reason I typed attack a lot of times instead of fire even if fire was shorter. I liked the effects and how the game looked you really did a great job with this.

Run and Slash by Aycan 2017-07-31T20:57:00Z

It's a nice game and as zoglu said making smaller levels would beneffit your game a lot, using smaller energy amounts would allow you to make things more interesting. You really nailed the good feeling when you kill a lot of enemies. Good job!

Dear Leader's Love Powered Peace Bomb by Zyzzyzzyz 2017-08-05T07:17:02Z

I was interested for the name and the image you put as the entry, however the game itself didn't kept my attention for long as it's too barebones. I really liked the explotion sequence it looked good, the game's pacing was fine. Congratulations on finishing a LD game.

Bunker by Maesen 2017-08-05T07:01:09Z

It's a good game, the mechanics were well thought and the levels were unique enough. I would have liked to see more levels and other uses of the running out of power mechanic, don't get me wrong the ones on the game were clever but you can build more upon the idea that certain things are enabled when your power is lower than certain amount like you did with the lasers and magnetic doors. Usually there are moving platforms or other things that you could elaborate on but I really don't know if those things could be implemented on PICO-8. overall it's a nice short game.

T.A.G. Reborn by Code Dream 2017-08-16T04:26:17Z

I liked the mood and graphics of this game, the music was a great addition to the mood. But I really had a problem playing this game as the controls felt very unresponsive, and the waiting for the camera to go back to the player made me jump into the abyss a lot of times as you locked the inputs on the turn on switches' cutscenes.

Torch Boy by FloBar 2017-07-31T21:19:29Z

It's a really good game, as others are saying it's really too short even for LD I would have liked to see more levels but the concept is really good. I really liked the slowmo effect, the only downsize to the slowmo is that as the enemy's movement speed is too fast it doesn't give much time for dodging. Good Job!

Spooky the Scared Ghost by democore 2017-07-31T22:13:39Z

I liked the cute ghost, the perspective and the messages that were on the levels. The introduction was very nice and it teaches the basics very well. I would liked if you changed the tileset or the background to have a clearer way to know were to go to.

I tried to play this on Chrome and the ghost couldn't jump very high. I tried too on Firefox but the delay on the inputs was too much. downloading it is the way to play this one.

Float by MickeyG 2017-08-13T21:11:01Z

I like the idea of turning off the spaceship in order for you to stay afloat and move with the acceleration you had in the moment of jumping, I would have liked to see it with other objects besides the player, as it would be an interesting way of getting through a level.

And I would have liked that you teached the float/turn off mechanic and how it worked inside the game, I get that the first level is for that exactly as you can't clear it without knowing how it works, but adding some text inside the game that tells you something like "if you turn the ship's power off then you conserve your momentum you had while moving" Or maybe is just me.

I had a good time with this, if you add more stuff that is influenced by the ship turn off, it would be a nice game.

Dorgus Needs Power! by WillData 2017-08-08T06:37:36Z

I really like the spin that you gave on the genre, it works really nice with the concept that you're running out of power besides making you think of when to kill enemies. The audio is good enough and the graphics gave some personality to the game, the scoring system is good and the timing on the mobs is really great, it never felt that they appeared without me being prepared.

Nof for the criticism, I would have liked if the recoil was a little more consistent, as I tried to move using just the recoil of the gun and some times it gave me much more force than I anticipated in weird directions. I would like that you consider adding a double-tap for a dash in a direction like you did with the jumps, it would solve the issue that a lot of people have with the gun and it would create another way for the player to move as they wish.

Overall this is a nice little game, Good Job!

Dash Guy by Defratino 2017-07-31T22:39:39Z

It's a fun little game, the characters look good, the music is a little too relaxing. It weird me out that the dying sound effect is pac-man's.

If I had to say something to improve this is that if the levels don't give you enough time to react, and the game doesn't penalize you if you spam the dash, the levels are too short for you to run out of energy so... If you put longer levels with longer dashes with less energy you would encourage the player to think more about when to dash and react to the levels.

Exodus by Astrojone 2017-08-06T06:50:59Z

I really liked the graphics and the audio, the story was interesting but this is like a half of an introduction scene, I saw before hand that it ended on a cliffhanger but it's more like an abrupt ending. I would like to see a final product for this, it has a lot of potential, Good Job!
