Whoops, I killed everybody :/. But fun game, now I have to play it again.

souperstrawer 2017-07-31 09:43

The power starts dropping really rapidly once the first settlers arrive :S Not really sure what to do about it.

littlelegend 2017-07-31 09:47

Congrats on developing such a complex game in such a short amount of time ! You can win the game, just by purchasing the ResearchLab as the first building though

2demigods 2017-07-31 09:49

Great game, loved the sound but maybe a bit too easy win. Also next time consider putting a slider for the music volume and maybe an adjustable game speed.

aterlamia 2017-07-31 09:55

@souperstrawer build a house as fast as you can :) it will remove the cost of the settlers for the cost of a house which is much less. @2demigods thanks @littlelegend yeah to complex i think if i made it less complex bugs like the one you mentioned would probbaly not exists

cowa 2017-07-31 09:55

It's really hard to understand how not to die in 5 seconds  You should slow down power consumption at the beginning and let the player learn the mechanics.

"your incompetence killed us all" this made me laugh

Really like the music!

stuffed-wombat 2017-07-31 10:06

I suck at this and the Game Over button does not seem to work.

Did you really make the music yourself in 2 days?

The text in the beginning actually made me grin :)

goloso-games 2017-07-31 10:08

I died a lot at the beginning, but when I got it, I enjoyed the game :) Music was great too.

aterlamia 2017-07-31 10:15

@stuffed-wombat the music tracks are generated and then put together /rearranged and instruments chosen in lmms

ysty 2017-07-31 10:39

A good idea well executed. It would have been nice if there was a way to fast-forward time as I got a bit stuck with a stable but only very slowly increasing amount of power, so couldn't really do anything. I liked the music. :)

agecaf 2017-07-31 10:58

It's quite impressive you managed to implement all this in 2 days. The balance is unfortunately a bit off; the start is hard, but when you pass it, it's hard to say you're running out of power with +0.5 power production. I quite like the mood you get with the music and the colony theme.

c0nst4ntin 2017-07-31 11:12

A good idea and awesome how you managed to make such good art and all the gameplay in 2 Days. I liked the game, and thanks again for voting mine!

aterlamia 2017-07-31 11:33

@ysty good idea thanks for the feedback @agecaf yes i think i bite off more than i could handle so balancing far from perfect

bewelge 2017-07-31 11:51

Fun game. And quite complex for such a short time. My incompetence killed everyone the first tries because I had no idea what was going on. Also, on game over the game gets stuck for me and I have to reload (which is a pain with Unity :P ). But it's still a job very nicely done!

autovelop 2017-07-31 12:08

Great job with the game! Liked your music and how much attention you put into things that people normally ignore (like UI and narratives). I would recommend perhaps doing a few introduction levels (instead of so much text) to get players into it. Might help with the balancing comments you've been getting...

pitpony 2017-07-31 12:09

Fun game. Really good concept and impressive how much you've completed. Like others, I died rather quickly but that did encourage me to have several attempts :)

Well done.

larx 2017-07-31 13:05

It's an excellent concept and I did finish the game, but I did have a few problems. The start is a little frustrating, but I got over that quickly, because it helped the feeling of urgency. But I did wait around for power quite a bit, because I was scared of not having enough power before placing the science building.

good-enough 2017-07-31 13:08

This was pretty cool to me, even though it was buggy and I never did figure out how to survive... But nevertheless, this must have been a lot of work, and I congratulate you!

vkmicro 2017-07-31 14:05

**Overall game impression:** I really like that there's a bit of a story to it. I also really enjoy colony building and resource management games and this is just that. It was very cool and interesting to play. Like I said, I love colony building and resource management games, so how could I not love this game? it's awesome. Sure there were some bugs but within 48 hours you've done a lot of work and should be proud of it. Everybody who's participating and done anything and submitted it should be proud! Anyways, pretty cool and fun game overall, fast paced and hardcore. Really good! The sounds are also fairly pleasant.

**Suggestions and comments on improvement:** Having a tooltip when you mouse over the buildings saying what they do and what kind of resources they produce and use would help a lot!

p.s. check out my game as well please.

justinooncx 2017-07-31 15:13

I'm aware this is an unfinished and buggy build, but I'll still point out the things I saw regardless, to be fair. The game itself has some promise; it's a shame more couldn't be done within the time scope, but that's how game jams roll, unfortunately. Good job getting a playable build out with a proper win condition, though! As others have said, ran into the problem of dying when the colonists were introduced, but once that hurdle was overcome, it was pretty smooth sailing. Didn't know you could click on the science station until I built 5 of the damn things, so that was dumb of me! Also the lack of a restart button was somewhat painful at the beginning, and the science station window wouldn't go away if you clicked on it but already started research... Still, I can see where this game could've gone! Keep it up!

adroitconceptions 2017-07-31 15:28

the building icons need a description of what they do. It was unclear how to get enough power to be able to build the science station.

aterlamia 2017-07-31 15:51

@everybody thanks for all the comments only those make this LD a success for me already as i needed/wanted feedback on how to get better. I have uploaded new builds that fix the restart button, close button in science station and some more clarity on the clickability of the science station. @vkmicro thanks for that extencive feedback, i can however not play your game as i am on linux and you only have a windows build.

simonhutchinson 2017-07-31 15:57

Neat. Brief, and too the point! A strong first entry. It'd be cool to see the idea expanded (new levels, etc.)

speedysloth99 2017-07-31 17:16

Nice game! I don't know how, but somehow I beat it in about 30 seconds, basically by going ham and buying everything I could. But this game is incredible! To make such a game in 48 hours is mind-blowing. Great job!

aterlamia 2017-07-31 17:29

@simonhutchinson yeah i probably will expand on this and at least make the code better and to learn unity a bit more as this was my first project with it :) @speedysloth99 Yes one of the things i needed/wanted to do is turn off certain build options in the beginning but alas to little time to finish that

sarah 2017-07-31 17:44

I really liked how the map grew as you expanded the buildings. A little more information about what each building was would have been useful. And maybe highlighting the spaces on the grid that each building is allowed to be placed on :) Good job overall!

vkmicro 2017-07-31 18:36

@aterlamia You're welcome :D and understandable. Cheers!

cynical-monkey 2017-07-31 19:20

i liked the music but i just built the lab straight away and won, also playing in itchio cuts of the building button

oxrock 2017-07-31 19:25

The first time I played, it bugged out and said I won not long after placing my first building. Subsequent times my "incompetence killed us all!". Some tool tips or something explaining the buildings and whatnot would be nice. Not a bad entry overall, would kill everyone again :)

wevel 2017-07-31 19:58

Interesting game, seems that you can end up dying very quickly or just end up in a state where nothing changes.

sivael 2017-07-31 20:38

won in like a minute - must be some bug or something. later couldn't win at all - just kept running out of power. Fun but unbalanced.

maldo19 2017-07-31 21:52

I got unlimited power without knowing anything, well... that guy's trust in my skills wasn't for nothing I think. Joking aside I really like this type of games but the winning condition is really weird, as I said before I won just by putting some buildings up fast and then just using the "research center" usually in this type of games you win by achiving some conditions like amount of colonists, coal or power left. The game really needs more information about the game's elements. But kudos on trying this kind of game, if you work a little more on this it would be a nice one to expand on.

shaolin-dave 2017-07-31 22:17

Not bad for a first try. Teaching the player could be better. Rather than so much reading, guide the player through the first few steps. I died almost right away.

ianburnette 2017-08-01 00:31

Good replay value. Plenty of mechanics to discover and the mood was well-set. I felt like some of the mechanics weren't quite finished (I also accidentally got perpetual energy?), but the framework was quite solid. I liked the dialogue at the beginning as well.

greysphere 2017-08-01 03:29

I liked the hex grid, and building to reveal the map and new resources. I was hit by the 'insta-win' issue too, but restarted and tryed to avoid it. Overall fun!

kalibrated 2017-08-01 03:35

Sweet game! I was unfortunately really terrible and killed everybody twice. This seems like a really tough genre to make for a jam! Since there's so many things that you have to explain to a player. But the text was written well (too bad there's no writing/story category) and I liked the background music too.

aterlamia 2017-08-01 06:23

@everybody thank you so much for your feedback. I fixed (i hope) the insta win issue and make sure you can not win by just spawing buildings

hadesfury 2017-08-01 12:08

Too hard ... can only build the mine than die !

hadik 2017-08-01 18:22

I think you not force lock all other buldings, it slow down start :) Interesting strategy/managment entry, also soundtrack is good, unfortunetly graphics is maybe too poor, but that is only one bad thing.

+1 For good tutorial :)

estebe 2017-08-01 20:30

This is a difficult genre to pull of well, so good effort!

The story was well written, and the explaination clear and funny.

But the gameplay didn't reflect that. I could only build one thing in the beginning and not the things I needed most. That made it frustrating.

Original music! I haven't heard something like it, it's unique and not in a bad way.

A little rough around the edges, but you've made a good foundation here, so it would be a shame to let it die. Refine it and I'm sure you'll have a superb game!

loktor 2017-08-01 21:02

As others before me, i had the problem that i couldn't really build more than the initial two mines? afterwards it wasn't really clear to me why that was the case?

Besides that, i think the idea of the concept is a real great one, i especially like your soundtrack + graphics you did a really great job on them :)

sir-daniev 2017-08-02 05:28

Fun game from a difficult genre to play and build. The mood reminded me of old space strategy games. Well made game, cool art design and well written dialogs. Congrats.

I could spend an outstanding amount of time playing it, but unfortunately, my incompetence killed us all T.T.

tuism 2017-08-02 07:02

Without reading the textual instructions at the top here, there's really no indication that you're not supposed to build things until the first colonist arrives, which is weird since the game starts with A LOT OF TEXT, which most will skip. I read it all and still didn't get that.

The concept of the game is cool, a numbers balancing game. I feel like the entire map thing doesn't add to the game itself - the important things are how the numbers change when you build this thing and that, and those consequences are completely left out of the UI, leaving the player to guess at the outcomes, which doesn't work well. I think if the whole game worked without the map like one of those clicker incremental games, it would communicate and work much more easily to a player.

The concept of "stable power" also was very vague and needed to be clearer from the beginning.

Has potential but lacking in the ability for the player to understand what's going on.

plantprogrammer 2017-08-02 10:12

Very good game. I am impressed, such complexity is even possible in a compo. I was a bit disappointed the map would not scroll. I really enjoyed the tension. If you don't want to fail, you need to act fast.

Great game :)

aterlamia 2017-08-02 10:24

@plantprogrammer thanks for your comment. You should be able to scroll the map if you press and hold the middle mouse button. Unfortunately, i had no time left to scroll the map based on your mouse pointer one of tehe many features i had to skip.

mr-houdini 2017-08-02 11:12

Great game for a compo. The time is limited but you've created something functional and inmersive. I enjoyed playing, so that must be a good thing. Nice work, and good luck!

joshburleson 2017-08-02 16:32

"Your incompetence killed us all?!?" Wat?! Lol! Surprised to see such an in depth game come from a compo submission. Would love to see a little more "juice" added like a scale punch when adding a new building or a color flash when you get a new colonist. Otherwise really well done.

smbe19 2017-08-02 19:23

Cool entry. It was a bit easy: after you got over the first few power plants you had basically infinite energy. I liked how the map was extended if you built at the border. And it's interesting to see a hexagonal grid instead of those boring square ones.

Some bugs I encountered:

- I was not able to buy a science station and thus couldn't finish the game. ;( - If you place a building (power plant) on a tile at the left border it won't show up.

PowerOrDie.png

aterlamia 2017-08-02 19:29

@smbe19 thanks for your feedback, i have not encountered the bug that it does not allow you to build the science station it should unlock after you have 2 or more power plants. I will look into that.

gonutz 2017-08-02 21:59

This game is in a rough shape, 48 hours is not that long. Some typos and grammar issues in the text, but that is OK, I assume you are not a native speaker. The text in the top-left is very small, it gives you crucial information but is hidden away in a corner.

The music is nice, it adds to the dark atmosphere of the story.

The story is well told, the narrative gives you subtle hints, like when the player responds to "you have the knowledge about this and that" and we say "that was a long time ago". That is a very nice touch. I also like the text box presentation with the guy in it. This is so much better than a plain text box, it gives you so much more. Good job.

Overall a nice entry, keep up the good work!

kroltan 2017-08-02 21:59

@aterlamia, I also could not build the Science Station, repeatedly. If I don't buy it when the guy tells me to, I can't buy it ever again.

mortus 2017-08-03 11:05

I quite like the overall idea. Although it seems to be too easy, basically you can't lose after 1-2 tries when you know what to do. I think some random events and more buildings could bring some randomness and make this game quite engaging and fun to play! Also, I liked the dialogue-tutorial a lot. Would be great if you could skip it though. Nice job!

bocodillo 2017-08-03 17:44

As a whole the game is alright with a good central idea but the difficulty curve is weird. At least for me. The game starts too difficult with only one or two clicks leading to an instant loss but later the game becomes too easy. The presentation was good though. The graphics were nice and simple, easy to understand, and there were great little touches like the fact that you as a player are talking to a character rather than just reading boxes of text. It's a game I'd like to see built upon as it does have a lot of potential.

coomzy 2017-08-03 21:27

I couldn't do anything but put down two miners, and then nothing just happened :/ Looked like a interesting game

aterlamia 2017-08-03 22:06

@all of course thank you for your comments i cannot reply to everybody just know i appreciate your feedback. I was not happy with the game myself but submitted it anyway to learn from and you guys/gals give me valuable information

@gonutz yeah i am not a native speaker also too little time made it that i did not read everything as good as i should. I did not notice myself that the text was too small but then again i knew what was there.

@mortus yeah problem is i had to many ideas and there should have been other building/researchers also colonist should start to want food ect ect unfortunately too little time. I agree that balancing is one of the biggest problems i have. And i agree a skip would have been a wise thing to add

@bocodillo i agree the curve is a bit weird that is why the win condition is pretty soon as after a while the game is too easy at least you should be able to finish the game. I definitely will try to implement all my ideas into the game as a post ld project. Partly to learn and partly because i had too many ideas that are just not implemented. And i personally think would make a way better and complete game.

@coomzy strange that you can not do more. After you place 1 miner you need to wait a bit until you have enough coal to start the powerplant. After that you should get an event to build some more stuff. So not really sure what goes wrong for you .

chillhammer 2017-08-05 15:25

I had the same problem coomzy had. My first playthrough I had all buildings, but then even after refreshing the page and restarting my computer, I wasn't able to place any more buildings besides mines.

jusw85 2017-08-05 17:21

I beat the game, it wasn't too hard once you figure out how the game works. As mentioned in other comments, it starts slow but gets easier later on. I was slightly stuck near the beginning, so if anyone needs help:

1. The bulldozer generates coal. Build one over the rocks at bottom right 2. After 10 seconds, the colonists arrive. Build a hab. You need 1 hab per 14 colonists 3. Build a power plant. The power plant consumes coal and gives power 4. Do not build the science fac or research now, it eats up your power 5. Now the game becomes about juggling your power plants / bulldozers to make sure your power/s is positive, while making sure power doesnt drop below 0. Eventually you'll build dozens of plants giving you tons of power, then you can build the science fac

I liked this game, it's rare you see a resource management game on a hex grid in an LD. Good job!

ethan-kennerly 2017-08-05 18:48

When I saw the map and building list, I felt interested. If you continue to develop this, I built a building that cost 200 twice and then didn't know what to do.

aterlamia 2017-08-05 21:23

@jusw85 thank you for your comment and your help to other new players, i decided to update my description with some more (extended) information and your comment was the last push i needed to do that so thanks for that.

@ethan-kennerly thank you for your comment and if you are wondering what you need to build and what it does take a fresh look at the updated description i hope this will help explain things a bit better. I would have liked to put all that in game but time ran short.

drag0mir 2017-08-06 10:07

060801.png if build 2 mine in start game, then not come Colonist( (coal changes to 0) It is a pity that it is allowed to build something and go over zero (Current power 140, build house -> -10 Game Over)

Nice game!

aterlamia 2017-08-06 10:28

@drag0mir, to build over zero is actually by design, to keep you on your toes and not just go crazy building things but actually think about what you build. But i should probbaly have been more clear in describing that. Thanks for your feedback

eptwalabha 2017-08-06 13:38

Nice game.

But if you build two miners before the amount of coal reaches 1, then the rest of the tutorial won't trigger and you're doomed to fail.

This is very impressive for a game made in two days. The music isn't annoying and the dialogs clearly explain what to do and why.

I enjoyed this game. Well done.

kubenexion 2017-08-07 19:20

Impressive work for a 2 days alone made game!

A little bit simple but fun and cool :)

schuster 2017-08-07 22:17

Cool builder game, the graphics and audio are great. Nice Job!

jimbly 2017-08-08 00:03

Nice game! I won! I also kept building power plants off into the distance to try to find more coal, but I couldn't find any... I guess we'll have to settle for unlimited power from a perpetual motion machine then instead :(.

Nice tutorial too, that really helps.

fran-segura 2017-08-16 18:10

Nice and complex entry, pretty impressive for the compo. Took me a while to understand it but after some time I started to get the hang of it (the tutorial was good, but I'm not the best at this kind of game). Good job, congrats!

tero-pulkkinen 2017-08-17 12:12

the graphics is ok. the action was a little boring.

yirggzmb 2017-08-18 06:42

Very ambitious for the compo. For some reason the game wouldn't let me build a science center. Might also be nice if you could change which building you have selected, without placing it instead. Very enjoyable though and hope you continue expanding on the idea.

lavwa 2017-08-19 23:47

Very impressive to see such a complex gameplay developed during a LD. At first I made the mistake of building 2 mines right off the start and it seems it stopped Colonists to appear. Aside from that, you got the time to put a tutorial, thats very nice. Very nice game, great job !

bloodjohn 2017-08-20 07:13

Great story, nice graphics. As soon as the dialogue - I couldn't understand what to do next. Any action leads to the loss. I think I should work on my balance.

sempra 2017-08-21 20:39

Very hard to master and challenging as we can say :p But the point is here, you made it, the game is great however, and it's a good ludum entry ! Nice realisation and keep up the good work =)
