LD39 — Running out of Power

(Playing the original L39 version)

The graphics are really nice and the sound effects are clear and get the point across well, though the way the game handled death was weird. When I died, I didn't really know where I began from at all, and maybe I'm just missing the point with that remark. However, the game itself had a lot of blind deaths, either from impossible to see spikes or an invisible death plane, and I'm sure you might have gotten rid of them. Aside from those gripes, the level design seemed to work nicely, though a slightly faster slide on the wall would be appreciated.

Nice work! The difficulty might need touching up, either making the rocks or wingspan smaller, and the gameplay didn't quite convey the theme well to me, but its presentation and basic gameplay are both really good!

Okay! Not a bad first entry into the field. The main mechanics are functional, and the gameplay is tried and true. Audio is an issue of course, but you're already well aware of that. The main problem I think this game had was workflow. A lot of effort seemed to be put in to making the puzzles themselves, rather than first and foremost making the mechanics themselves solid. Moving was an absolute chore throughout the game, and I feel like a little fine-tuning with how fast the player character moves would've done this game wonders. Additionally, the transitions between levels are very quick, and a player can make a move in the next level without meaning to. There is also an error at level 7, where part of the level is offscreen, and perhaps having the player commit to pushing a box for a second before having it slide to the next tile could also do wonders. But again, for a first game, especially with needing to learn as complex an engine as Love2D for this, it's a good showing! Best of luck in the future.

I think this was mostly nailed in terms of presentation. The music was nice and the graphics were all good. Most of the mechanics meshed together well and jumping at the center is a very cool idea. However, I feel that some adjustments could be made. There's the typical problem of getting stuck in geometry, and either getting sent out of the level when caught under one of those capsules or being stopped completely. Those two are minor bugs that can be ironed out later, though. The main problem I had was that getting stopped was very punishing, in a way that was not at all fun. Hitting the front of a block would catapult the player backwards, and it would take several seconds to start moving forward again at a decent pace. I feel like the game could have used some thrusters when the ship is under a certain speed threshold in order to make the game feel just a little bit better to play. A very solid showing overall, though.

This was a pretty good entry! The platforming bits were a little tricky at times, but not too bad, and the movement and audio were both pretty good! Personally, the only big fault I had with this entry was that the battery character did end up blending in with the TV in the second level, making it a little hard to notice where exactly they stood.

A nice experience. There were a fair few clarity issues with the flow, and the game didn't feel very alive, though it may have been sacrificed for the theme of the game, but I found everything else about it really well done. Props.
