Really nice work! I think the art and the audio were the most successful parts of this, the art had a lot of charm and juice, especially the clouds, I really liked them. I loved the 'nooooo' sfx, really funny and charming. I wonder at the decision to allow infinite deaths? I felt like it took some of the tension out of it, though counting them is an interesting option. The shooting / capturing gameplay was simple but effective. Well done!

Pleased to meet you! Ow! NOOoooooo...

Hate to rain on tour parade!

I'll have to kill you, THUNDERstand?

This game is great and I love it.It looks great, it's fun and the voices are amazing. It's a bit too short, though

I'm not able to rate this since I didn't participate in LD39, but I wanted to come check out your game based off of how much I loved W.R.L.D. As I expected, Frankenstorm was fantastic! The gameplay was fun, I liked the music, it thematically made sense, and it looked great (specifically I love the clouds and all of the particles). All of the characters were charming as well, and the voices added a bit of character that I liked.

My only complaint has to do with the death system. I was a bit surprised that you didn't add a leaderboard for # of deaths, which would have been a solution to the infinite deaths. At some point, dying ended up becoming a strategy, which shouldn't have been the case. I'm not saying a leaderboard was necessary, but maybe it could also have taken power to respawn (after all, Dr. Frankenstein could have used some of the power to make more creations).

As far as the gameplay, I liked the balancing of trying to attack while still collecting clouds at the same time. You would have to stop shooting in order to capture clouds, which almost reminded me of Splatoon 2's Salmon Run, which had a similar mechanic, although explored in a completely different way. You also had to keep moving to make sure you weren't trapped in the middle of a storm of rain or lightning. Overall, it was a really fun experience. Great job!

It a beautiful entry and I enjoyed playing it. I would give it a high score (I can't because I skipped this LD).

However, measured among your outstanding earlier entries it feels a bit less coherent gameplay-wise. The fact that you cannot die takes a lot of tension out of the game. On the other hand, if I were to judge a game targeted for younger kids (the graphics would fit perfectly), then this design decision would make a lot of sense. So take this comment with a grain of salt.

It's still an awesome, well polished game.

Another awesome TerraCottaFrog game, with a little more high res pixel art than in onehourgamejam games but of course not without a good amount of particles  Loved the art style, the trails the clouds leave seemed really complex. SFx are cute, as @cerno-b mentioned, that makes a perfect fit for a game targeted for a younger audience but adds a certain charm to the game world in any case.

The sole negative I can find is that the lightning distribution was unfair some of the time... Between round 20 and 30 I couldn't make it through a wave of lightning without dying even once :/

Pretty cool entry

Here we have a beatiful pixel art, pretty cool game, is very fun to play, I wish it was longer than it is.

Win.Perfect.Excellent mood and storytelling, super cute characters, clouds seems designed to never really look the same but always cute and "juiced". Music sounds taken from an old console game, sfx are cute too (noooooo) and very well done overall. The gameplay is simple yet quite original, fast paced and very well balanced, visuals are smooth, I only thought that I wished the player fires had a color not used with clouds to increase visibility but it is not an issue as the game is not too difficult and allows you to lose many creatures (as many as needed ?). I died 27 times to reach the end, I don't know if it's designed to be easy or just to allow the player to go through the end but that was fun cute and intense. I didn't mention the theme that is absolutely well exploited. Really a nice entry.

Good feedback for shooting, good feedback for shots there are fired at you, it feels nice, enemies are cute, your characters are cute, music feels perfect for the graphics, there's variety of characters so the gameplay keeps changing even if it's a little bit. Even the happy little clouds are charming. Awesome game!

This was pretty fun! I found that the game became almost unplayable in the boss level, as the boss kept generating mini-clouds, seemingly without a limit. The screen was soon filled with lightning, and I had to quit just to get out of the game! Other than that issue, I was having a pretty fun time playing! :)

wabble 2017-08-07 01:38

Cool gameplay but the theme is not even implemented.

I got stuck in the level with the big cloud, I kept on dying and I couldn't suck any clouds.

PS: please make the source code available

terracottafrog 2017-08-07 01:56

@wabble the source code is on the itch page :)

This game reminded me a lot of Ghostbusters for the NES, or at least the better part of that game, which was catching the ghosts. Nice voice acting. I'm really not sure how the running out of power theme applies. Maybe make your power (ammo supply) run out as you attack and regenerate as you collect more clouds. I liked the different monster characters, but I wish there was some gameplay difference between them. I liked the different types of clouds with different attack patterns and the boss clouds. Sometimes the game felt a little unfair and covered the entire screen with enemy lightning bolts. Maybe add a bomb option to clear the screen like in bullet-hell shooters.

I had a lot of fun! I wish the official ghostbusters games back in the day were as much fun.

The risk/reward mechanic of collecting when you're not shooting was genius! It was also amazing to have only one action button. And so many levels, and boss fights! Wow.

Very very well-done!

I didn't know what I expected from this one before I played, I really had a lot of fun with this game, more than the majority of games I played for this LD.

If I had to give some feedback is that the rain drops' randomess was really unforgiving, it killed more than every other thing. Every time I died to the rain I felt it wasn't fair, but it wasn't frustrating enough due to having infinite lives. The downside is that as someone said before it makes it lack tension and that is something that most shmups depend on, without it you don't feel like you have to dodge the incoming attacks.

And a real small thing is that I would have liked to have an additional X for the jumping as my mind was too focused on dodging with the right hand that I forgot that I could jump. Overall I really liked this one, the sfx didn't get old for me and the graphics looked great, I like your style. Great Job!

tjakka5 2017-08-08 16:48

Great sound effects! Having those pitched up voices was pretty funny, later in the game it gets a bit old as all the voice acting you hear is pitched up. The soundtrack is ok, but nothing special.

The art is standing out here, many cool particle effects and small animations really bring this game to life. The game has great controls and accurate hitboxes, feels good and is fun.

Your enemies also get different attack patterns the further you progress which is great, however it would be nice to have different attack patterns as a play too. You just keep holding the button to shoot all of the time.

Another point of criticism is, that the game is rather easy, later enemies get a more difficult attack pattern that's true, but there is no penalty in dying.

Overall really good stuff! With potential for being even better :)

ramlefant 2017-08-08 17:18

Nice game! I love the graphics and the audio.

petzi 2017-08-08 20:16

The graphics and audio go REALLY well together and are really funny. I love how you even animated the game's title. I wish you didn't have infinite lives, because it kind of removes the purpose of it being challenging, but it's fun anyway (a bit too hard, I think, as the water attacks often seem unavoidable).

It reminds me of an old GameMaker game called Puffy Star Speed, which I'll upload once I reboot Windows. I did find a link to it online, but the site seems really dodgy, so I thought it best not to take chances.

EDIT: Here's a link for Puffy Star Speed. It runs on my machine, hopefully it will run on yours :) I downloaded it from the original source about 10 years ago, so it's certainly safe.

Very cute game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk2ETXlss4Q
