LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Dino Bros by josefnpat 2015-04-24T13:30:00

Nice! Great art style. I particularly liked the weird dino walk animation. I liked the cut scenes but found them a tiny bit long, but then again I always dont like cut scenes so that's just me. Voice over was good and had it's funny bits. I found the delay on jump a little weird. Overall really good entry though!

Untitled (Make up a name?) by apophenia 2015-04-21T02:32:00

Really liked this concept and a nice, simple art style. Seemed to fail on 3rd level though, just shows picture with no path. Nice work though!

Miyu by SecondDimension 2015-04-21T02:36:00

Very polished, great art and music!

Timelock by pixelballoon 2015-04-22T14:15:00

Great work man. The good: Graphics, music, sounds and simple but intuitive game design.

The bad: It'd be cool if level reset automatically when timer ran out, I missed the 'R to reset' prompt initially and was confused. Also I think the initial time frame is quite tight. I'd start out with much more time and reduce it as levels go higher. Great work though.

Spike Nut's Temple by AxeTheory 2015-04-21T01:35:00

Agree that avoiding projectiles was different, liked the art and sound.

Hugline Miami by Figglewatts 2015-04-21T18:33:00

This is very awesome.

I would have had the guys not die, maybe just stand there with floating hearts.

PHARBA by Awpteamoose 2015-04-20T23:34:00

Very nice, I just watched the video but it looks and sounds great. I like the color choices and art style a lot. The music wasn't my cup of tea but did fit the mood nicely. Paint sounds were great. Overall a fun concept, well done!

bloodshot by rogueNoodle 2015-04-21T01:49:00

Absolutely awesome. Mechanics and control are great, visuals are super stylish, music and sound works really well. I'm really really impressed. Man! Good job.

Velo-City by TeamEagle 2015-04-25T14:20:00

Really excellent entry. Love the shader effect that brings the geo into visibility, a great solution to the popping/clipping issue. Love the art style as well. Having the geo shake to the music was really cool too. Great work!

Special Agent by guoboism 2015-04-21T00:55:00

I got a real chuckle out of this :) Great job, nice intro sequence and I loved the 'press J to fire' moment, very very funny. I would have loved a bit of audio, even just some SFXR bloops. That title sequence was just crying out for some sweet tunes! Anyway, very well done, I played to the end 10/10 would shoot self again :)

Unconventional Tournament by dylanigan 2015-04-20T23:39:00

+1 for excellent voice acting. Not bad, a little clunky but I like the idea. Good job having a tutorial as well, although I would have taken more time to explain the unique parts instead of saying 'play like any other fps' lol. Still, well done.

pizza slap by dlowe 2015-04-20T23:49:00

Nice work! Great sounds and art, especially like that background.

Bilehacker by RobotParking 2015-04-21T01:32:00

DIgging the weird tech/gross vibe. Odd game, but cool.

Sling by Novodantis 2015-04-21T01:53:00

OS/X version seems to be a bad link. Maybe make a zip file? Empty g-drive folder. Pictures look good!

Bazooka Vespa: The Tri-Miniguns by Crawler Studios 2015-04-21T00:58:00

I couldn't find any robots, ran out of ammo and then managed to drive out of the level. Music was awesome 10/10.

Fatal Attraction by erbridge 2015-04-21T01:02:00

Great concept, is this using the 2D Physics effectors in Unity 5? I wanted to do something somewhat like this, glad someone did it. Great music, great simple art, sounds and overall presentation. I agree that it's hard as nails and takes a bit to figure out but liked it a lot! A little better explanation / tutorial up front might help.

Chessboard Death Race by killthealias 2015-04-21T01:20:00

Good job, nice graphics and I was able to drop in and drive around and shoot someone so that was cool. A couple things I'd do differently:

Switch the powerups to a trigger instead of a collision check, that way you wont stop for a sec when you bump them, that was annoying. I'd also maybe implement a line renderer on the bullets so you can see where you're shooting at and being shot from. Generally good work though!

The "Bureaucrat" by b3jh24 2015-04-25T14:14:00

Interesting concept but I got up to the negotiation screen, entered some values but then couldn't executre or offer the trade. Still, cool to see something different.

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-20T23:41:00

@JK5000 thanks! Glad you enjoyed the voice over :)

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-20T23:58:00

@dliq thanks! The art style (although very simple and minimal) was the part I was happiest with. Glad you liked the VO as well! I should probably actually be more clear about where objective is, it's in the opposite corner from where you start. Duly noted about running a bit faster.

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-21T00:30:00

Thanks very much for all the notes guys, I did a last minute iteration to tweak the design, hopefully the goal is clearer! Thanks!

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-21T00:32:00

@Smirnov48 yes I moved that one enemy, it was a bit unfair :) Thanks!

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-21T00:33:00

@ManicMiner thanks! I'm using Unity with Bloom, Vignetting, a little Global Fog and the Unity 5 precomputed GI. Glad you liked the look!

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-21T00:35:00

@b3jh24 I tried to adjust the level design a bit by making the final goal higher so it's more visible. The non-texture thing was just a question of time and my lack of texture skillz, but good point :)

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-21T01:07:00

@Jefuzan, thanks, I tried to make it a little more obvious but yes, there's very little guidance, thanks for the feedback!

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-21T20:54:00

@leo_p_mahon thanks for the notes! Appreciate the constructive criticism.

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-22T01:38:00

@Nibble Bits: Thanks! I used the Unity First Person Rigidbody controller from the Unity standard assets which has some mouse smoothing built in.

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-22T01:40:00

@Pixel Heart: Thank you! I agree that the gameplay needs some tweaks, I've uploaded a build to http://mattmirrorfish.itch.io and will post the updated versions there as I iterate.

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-22T01:41:00

Null Dies: I love Mirror's Edge as well, definitely an inspiration here. I originally had a darker more orange sky and darker feel and at one point I switched to a white sky with reddish fog and it all just clicked really nicely. I agree that it's pretty slight mechanically. Interesting re: the crash. Thanks!

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-22T01:43:00

@DarkMeatGames: The aimlessness is a recurring comment and has definitely given me some stuff to think about. I think setting up the level to lead the player and give a more visual goal may be the next thing I try. This level design is very simple and not very intuitive. To quote the enemies in Metal Gear Solid: "It's just a box." I agree that the Portal voice is a little played out although I think audio in general is a great non-intrusive way to deliver background. Thanks for playing!

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-22T01:44:00

@Managore: Really glad you liked it. Failing on your first attempt is sort of part of the design :) If you know what you're doing it's over in about 3 mins :)

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-24T03:50:00

@liquidmedia thanks dude!

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-24T03:51:00

@Fanttum yeah I think I could get the difficulty under control by using some more predictable enemy patterns. Thanks for checking it out!

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-24T03:52:00

@Dreyan wow that's awesome, thanks so much. I think for a future iteration (if I do one) I want to refine the map a lot to try to keep the open feel but give a clearer sense of direction, glad you liked the openness though!

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-24T03:53:00

@josefnpat thanks a lot for giving it a try, was probably more like 16 all in :)

Feed The Birds by Gunzil 2015-04-21T01:29:00

I found the controls a little counter intuitive, my bread just kept falling straight down. Nice art style.

Emotional Magic by Alexander Ramsay-Baggs 2015-04-20T23:31:00

I checked this out, a little more info would have been good. I figured out that I could shoot, jump and avoid enemies but not much more. Something a little more explanatory (even just a screen with basic instructions) would have been cool. Music added a lot and art was pretty cool, didn't like the skybox much in this context though. Congrats on finishing!

SHiFT by Fanttum 2015-04-21T02:23:00

I liked the main character, music was good. Reminds me of vvvvv. Good job!

Rogue Paper Scissors by bearcabin 2015-04-20T23:56:00

This is my favorite game I've seen so far in my rating travels. Nice, clean, clear mechanics. Sound effects worked well, as did the art style. I got a high score of 25 coins in 11 levels :) Well done!

Return The shoe! by ProteinPannkaka 2015-04-21T02:33:00

Pictures are pretty but can't play on Windows :\

Mutated Software and Company by mutatedsoftware 2015-04-21T02:28:00

I like the art and the mood but the mechanic is horrible. Trying to click those buttons was just toooo annoying. +1 for calling your game Hoser though.

Pong Tank by kirbytails7 2015-04-21T01:27:00

God I found this difficult, I do like the layering of mechanics though.

A Snowball's Chance by diiq2 2015-04-25T14:07:00

Nice entry, I like the graphics and the mechanic is interesting. I had a few control glitches where things would become unresponsive and a little lag. Nice and well conceived.

The Rock the Paper and the Scissors by BIZM 2015-04-24T13:23:00

Really great entry! Awesome graphics, music and mechanic. Great interpretation of the theme. Took me a minute to recognize how I was supposed to play but once I got it I had fun.

Evil Cupido: Haters gonna hate by Pixel Heart 2015-04-21T02:00:00

The good: Great, art, nice music and a cool mechanic! Good job.

The bad: Not so clear when you're about to die, or why.

X-11 "Gust Gunner" by cowboycolor 2015-04-21T01:57:00

Looks great visually, +1 would like mac or web build.

Latvian Milk by Dreyan 2015-04-24T13:34:00

Very nice entry! Great graphics and sound. Definitely detect some Vlambeer infuence which I like, some crate box and nuclear throne. I'm not sure about changing weapons based on time. Overall a very good entry!

Indifference by Pibeex 2015-04-20T23:46:00

I liked this a lot, nice, simple mechanic with very solid execution. Great art, music and gameplay. Good job!

BoomBurst by plokdev 2015-04-20T19:24:00

I got a good laugh out of yelling 'Yaa Yaa!' into my mic. Took a few seconds to get the hang of it but I think this is a pretty fun mechanic. I actually lol'd so I think that's a good sign. I think a more clear barrier of where you need to be to get kicked out would be good. Fun idea!

Lasers have recoil, right? by th4t 2015-04-21T01:09:00

Great idea! Nice mechanic, one of the best mechanics I've seen so far and a great take on the theme. Art is simple but works, nice level design to introduce the mechanics, nice sound and nice music choice. Overall really well done!

LD39 — Running out of Power

Frankenstorm by TerraCottaFrog 2017-07-31T03:38:30Z

Really nice work! I think the art and the audio were the most successful parts of this, the art had a lot of charm and juice, especially the clouds, I really liked them. I loved the 'nooooo' sfx, really funny and charming. I wonder at the decision to allow infinite deaths? I felt like it took some of the tension out of it, though counting them is an interesting option. The shooting / capturing gameplay was simple but effective. Well done!

On/Off by ThePelranthean 2017-08-02T01:48:08Z

I liked the color scheme switching, going over the bridge felt tense. Definitely a bit hampered by camera issues, but overall nice work. Would have been helped out by some sound.

Yo Ho Ho by Capitals 2017-08-02T01:22:55Z

Great job! Me and my 7 and 8 year old sons played, and had a blast. Mechanically I thought it was solid. The sound was great and appropriate, the art looked good. I didn't feel a real connection to the theme, but overall a very solid entry. Maybe it would have been fun to be able to reposition the crew, during the voyage.

A Thirst For Power by bobsleigh 2017-08-02T01:58:52Z

My 7 and 8 year old say: "You guys rock!" and they didn't want to stop playing. Great work, you've earned yourselves some fans over here. My only critique was that maybe the enemies could have a bit less health, and that the bullets could be a little bigger and a little easier to see. Great work!

Running the Marathon by gamepopper 2017-08-01T19:21:19Z

I really liked this a lot, a fresh, strange idea. I got .45 miles before I gave up but I found the whole effect to be quite hypnotic and cool. Great art, great mechanic. Could have been improved with some music maybe? Or some more background changes to 'reward' your effort, something to look at while you're pressing? Anyway, I thought this was a really cool, interesting game. Reminds me a bit of the 'extreme' performance style work of Marina Abramovic, in a good way. Really well done.

Solar-Powered Guns by eva 2017-08-01T16:42:50Z

hey,

Cool little game. I think the mechanic is solid with the refueling and I like the little connector line that shows when you're getting powered. I think it might be good to have some pressure to move away from the charging stations, like maybe they run out too? As it was I found just sitting near one and spamming bullets was a dominant strategy. Also I found that the movement and turning were painfully slow, not sure if that was intentional or maybe a bug?

I think the art is the most successful aspect of this. Great colors and overall unit and enemy design was clear and solid. I like the simple background and overall the visual effect was clear and punchy. Some sound and music would have added a lot I think. Nice work!

A LED story by hairaz 2017-08-01T20:00:11Z

I really loved this. Double jumping mechanic was great, loved the use of photography, the sound. The jumping puzzles were simple and effective. I *loved* the ending and was glad the game was short enough for me to see it. Really a beautiful, simple little game with a ton of heart and feeling. I agree it would be nice to fix the image seams in the late screens, other than that I don't see much to improve.

Only on Batteries by Silvae 2017-08-02T01:42:15Z

Nice work. It wasn't clear initially that we were supposed to shoot, some kind of tutorial or mention of the controls in game might have helped. I liked the sound, and I thought the art was simple but worked.

Game Rover by bruins 2017-08-01T15:12:45Z

Nice work dude! I think the visuals are the most successful part. Really liked the sprites and the post-processing. Music and sound were simple and set a good mood. The mechanics were also simple but effective. Overall a nice, solid entry!

I hit one bug where it seems like the level start was bugged, I think it was the 3rd level? Here's a snap:

Skelly Zone by mattmirrorfish 2017-08-01T15:15:26Z

@estebe thanks for pushing through and searching, I was rushing to upload before running out to pick up my kids. Sorry to hear the game didn't run well, it's honestly very very badly optimized, I made some late attempts to tweak that but yeah, it probably won't run well at all on slower machines :(

@oboshape thanks for checking it out and letting me know about the bad link on Twitter! Really appreciate it.

Skelly Zone by mattmirrorfish 2017-08-01T19:13:02Z

@gamepopper thanks for the feedback, yeah I agree the control scheme you describe probably would have been better. I considered switching to straight FPS style controls and might do that if I do a further iteration on this idea. The performance is generally pretty bad across the board, I did some things that are fairly terrible rendering wise lol, so I'm not surprised it's slow. Not sure if we're allowed to do optimization work post-jam.

Skelly Zone by mattmirrorfish 2017-08-02T02:16:06Z

Thanks for the feedback guys, generally performance is pretty challenged, there's a lot I can do to optimize but I wasn't able to do it during the jam.

Abandon Ship by Futil 2017-08-01T20:22:52Z

Man this is really really good. Great art, great sound, love the story and gameplay. Terrific unified aesthetic. Really impressive. I felt like the controls were a bit weird to click on things and then use the same mouse button to move camera, maybe right click and drag to move camera? And maybe have the camera follow the player when not being moved or repositioned by the mouse. But overall, really really good.

Simple Lunar Lander Esque Game by OboShape 2017-08-01T15:38:12Z

Nice work Obo! I feel like the level, controls and mechanics came together really nicely with the space capsule theme. The floaty physics feel great with the theme. The addition of the minimap was a nice touch. My constructive critique would be that having to sit through the tutorial each time you died was not ideal, I'd either make it skippable with a button press or even have it be a scene between menu and main game so that when you restart you go back to main. Obviously it's a jam so having a tutorial at all is good lol. Overall a nice, effective little game though! Great work!
