LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Empty Promises by elitegoliath 2015-04-23T01:24:00

Cool idea! The concept of using lies to convert voters is great -- and everyone loves a llama in a hat. But the actual gameplay was not much different that 'shoot projectiles at enemies'.

As others said, it was hard to get around.

The occasional cry of 'Llamaratzies' made me laugh.

Lickitank by Beanalby 2015-04-23T01:33:00

Love it. Love everything about it, and hope you make it longer.

Love the sound effects, love the look, love the mechanics of it, love the way the tongue falls limp after it mlehs.

The jump sound is a bit harsh and grating; and you might find a better way to communicate that the wall and the enemy tank are connected in a "kill this to open that" relationship.

Great work.

OPERATOR 42 by TravisChen 2015-04-21T00:56:00

Looks cool! But the page doesn't load :(

OPERATOR 42 by TravisChen 2015-04-29T00:06:00

Super spectacular. Great voiceover work; fun game; would have been even more fun if the puzzles were a tiny bit harder and more frustrating.

Stylish look and feel, and groovy credit music. Great job!

Gunception by pikmin4000 2015-04-24T13:12:00

Challenging on a trackpad, but interesting mechanic; they're like directed mines.

The music sounds great the first time -- as other's mentioned, the loop is short and noticeable, but it's a great start.

I ended up in the pit before I was supposed to, I think, (judging by the pictures) and could neither escape nor die. Maybe a door that opens when it's time?

Polarity by Moraleidahgo 2015-04-20T23:13:00

The sound and feeling of the laser bolts are very, very satisfying -- maybe not unconventional, but very satisfying :)

Egg's Survive [+18] by ryuuk4 2015-04-21T00:07:00

I... that's a... hmmm. You've managed to make a game where the fart noise might be the least offensive part?

I enjoyed the music.

Zombies 'N' Marshmallows by ShadowBrain 2015-04-20T22:50:00

Oh geez this is surprisingly tense for a game about marshmallows!
I love how their heads inflate! Makes me think of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RreqhPy_-fs

Love it!

Adventure Lamp by ryguydavis 2015-04-24T12:58:00

Nice work!

I found that little bit of extra slide after a move or a jump to make the game very difficult; I slid off the far end of things far more often than I hit enemies.

I love the sound of the helmet.

Aquatic Regia by swinestudios 2015-04-21T23:28:00

I love the caves -- very interesting to move around and explore.

The music was very satisfying, too.

The bubble gun was a little unwieldy to aim -- maybe if you had to get *under* the piranha and the bubbles shot upward like real bubbles?

I am Gonna Smack You With My Words! by Marcos Rodrigues 2015-04-25T00:11:00

Nice! Just fast enough to feel urgent, but still very playable.

I couldn't figure out what I had to do to win the bonus rounds, so my recent word list got long.

I think it would be fun to have even more restrictions on the word; starting and ending letter, maybe, or extra points for using specific letters within the word.

dis by caryoscelus 2015-04-21T23:40:00

Using color as a narrative structure was interesting - it certainly made me try more endings than I would have otherwise.

Purely from a interaction perspective, you could probably load more text per click -- maybe use space to convey timing and wait for the moments of highest tension to force the reader to ask for more.

Cheeseburger (in Paradise) by Just_delete_it 2015-04-20T22:55:00

Yeah, what plokdev said. The title screen looks cool, but all the links go to a page with no download.

Cheeseburger (in Paradise) by Just_delete_it 2015-04-28T23:53:00

Haha, it took a while before I realized it was interactive.

That was a cheeseburger experience, no doubt.

I wish the bun textures hadn't been tiled, and I wish the ending had been a little more climactic -- but otherwise, very entertaining!

Dear Chancellor by Ludonaut 2015-04-20T22:58:00

Mhahahahahaha this was my first real, deep belly laugh of day. Thank you!

The Halfburn Incident by xhunterko 2015-04-20T13:31:00

Haha, great concept! Plays smoothly.

It would be neat to be able to see how many people are left to convert.

Sometimes the smoke drifts a long way, and sometimes it doesn't -- it maybe has to do with the lampposts? Making that mechanic clearer would have helped.

The Way of the Unconventional Weapon by Mikel 2015-04-20T23:07:00

Hahaha, sweet! It would have been cool if the opponents were a bit more challenging -- didn't get much of a rush from success.

I love the character animations, though -- the little hops, the gentle gesture of the judging-monk. Very simple, but very effective.

ONE _RUDE_ PLANET by nihilocrat 2015-04-20T13:38:00

Hey, super cool!

It's pretty challenging -- easy to get in a really eccentric orbit. I had one of the target planets orbiting *me* for a bit, which was very cool.

I'd love it if there was a visualization of gravity -- color, or field lines, or else a cloud of tiny meteoroids to act like iron filings.

Mechanically Enhanced Nano Unit by Frosnite 2015-04-23T01:57:00

This looks cool, but your 'web' link isn't working (document not found), and your OS/X .app download *does* download a .zip, but it doesn't produce a runnable app :(

Space Deuce by tiagosr 2015-04-20T23:46:00

Haha, cool idea! Still needs some work before it really feels like a fleshed out game, but it's a great start!

An usual weapon by GameDevKlingon 2015-04-21T23:44:00

Please re-upload so we can play your game!

Combine Carnage by acro 2015-04-21T23:50:00

Hahaha, great idea! Fantastic fit for the theme.

It was very laggy for me, so I can't rate the gameplay with much assurance, but the graphics looked nice -- as long as you avoided the wheat :)

The occasional voice over was amusing, but took me out of the game more than it immersed me.

Great work!

Victorian Era Linguistics Training Manual by DrHahn 2015-04-21T00:11:00

Aww, this looks fun. Any hope of non-Windows builds before judging is over? Or had I better find a VM?

Victorian Era Linguistics Training Manual by DrHahn 2015-04-30T01:16:00

A really interesting idea. A clearer signal of when things were going well or poorly would have helped -- I spent a long time trying to change the story instead of looking at the audience!

Obviously it would have been a trick to accomplish in the time, but real voice acting, and a hint that you were supposed to play a toff would have helped immensely.

Great work!

Invictus by coderitual 2015-04-21T12:15:00

Oh, this is kind of nice. Very relaxing to wobble around the screen.

I agree with Mixer, it would be nice to have a few seconds to work out the controls before the enemies start spawning; it's not immediately obvious what effect tapping has.

It might also be nice to have the world wrap asteroids-style -- one you're off the screen, it's almost impossible to get back on.

Weapon of Choice by iossif 2015-04-21T00:14:00

Haha just as I was getting invested in the story I hit the "deadline is coming" wall and now I'm back here.

Evil Printer by eralpkaraduman 2015-04-21T00:17:00

Heehee, this is neat. I love the way the paper glides -- it's not like real paper, but it has a lightweight, papery feel to it.

I also like the unusual aspect ratio -- maybe headed for mobile?

TUGBOAT by lucentbeam 2015-04-25T20:18:00

Very cool!

As others noted, ships seem to crash themselves if you stay out of the way.

It reminded me a little of another entry: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=25578 -- totally different thematic approaches to a similar mechanic.

Looks good, sounds good, fun to play. I'd love it if you got bonus points for salvaging space-junk.

(I will note in passing that the OSX version wouldn't quit -- quitting just restarted the menu!)

Great work!

A Big Freakin' Ball O' Hurt by LMT 2015-04-20T23:02:00

I love this idea. Challenging, but in the same way as a yo-yo or poi -- it's the kind of timing game that forces you into a flow. Super simple, but great work.

Just another sketch on the wall by RevelBase 2015-04-21T00:55:00

Aww, this looks super cool, but it keeps getting stuck right after the opening montage. I'm looking at half a brick wall. By laptop's fan is going wild, but nothing's happening -- and the arrows do nothing. :(

Just another sketch on the wall by RevelBase 2015-05-11T23:22:00

Hey, it works now! I'm not sure I totally understand the logic of all the combinations of objects, but it's a cool idea and it's very easy on the eye-balls.

The camera path was sometimes frustrating -- it sometimes seemed more concerned with showing off the beauty of the rendering than giving me the clearest view of the problems.

Great work!

Color Blind by hbocao 2015-04-23T22:51:00

Cool! Interesting use for the mouse wheel.

I liked the plinky planky sound when I attacked enemies -- I think it would be cool if the music fitted that sound more closely, but the Bach is nice.

Very fluid and pleasant.

Pipselwars by grozamorei 2015-04-21T00:34:00

Neat idea! I've seen a few competitive GOL's, but this is is the most interesting -- I like the idea of seeds and bombs, and not just leaving the cells to duke it out on their own.

It was a bit buggy when I played -- maybe because you're hosting it -- but it's a cool idea. I liked the voice overs.

There Is Nothing In This Endless Expanse. by stvr 2015-04-23T02:59:00

Very stylish, and if it was lacking in substance, I can't say you didn't warn me :)

You may have some weird gimbal locking issue -- there was one specific direction in which I could not move forward.

Baguettes! by jglrxavpok 2015-04-23T19:17:00

Ditto Jerre -- could not run on OSX.

Looks cool, though.

:(

Baguettes! by jglrxavpok 2015-04-24T22:32:00

Sorry, jglrxavpok, it's still a no-go for me: https://gist.github.com/diiq/43bf154a48e30ad7d625

Mouse Roller by DMajor 2015-04-21T01:54:00

I love the motion design of the rolling mouse. Very satisfying way to move around.

Sure, it's not done, but it's a very stylish start!

Material Exchange by ianb96 2015-04-23T01:47:00

Cool idea! You did very well with the time allowed, given your ambitious concept.

As everyone has noted, there's plenty of room to expand and improve as you put more time into the project -- I'd love to see some cool physics for turning walls/enemies into way and have them actually splash around in a satisfying way.

Words Are My Weapons by Adam Gould 2015-04-20T13:41:00

Cool ide!

I didn't leave a rating because I wasn't able to type -- I would WASD navigate just fine, but when the text entry thing popped up, my keyboard did nothing :(

So I got stuck at the swirly door.

Project T.U.B.A. by BooleanByte 2015-04-20T13:51:00

Hahaha, neat!

Took me a while to figure out how to shoot, but eventually I "wonn" :)

How about Tubular Under-arm Ballistic/Acoustic weapon?

They Come from Behind by nonetheless 2015-04-19T23:57:00

Very pretty! I like like the idea and the execution. I do wish you could skip the opening dialog after you die -- given how often it happens.

Doorman by Jacob Peltola 2015-04-22T00:20:00

Very cool idea! I like the way you walk around with a door having on your back -- it's like the opposite of a turtle!

I think I'd have enjoyed it more with more "how do I get *there*?" puzzles and less "avoid the enemy" -- just something thematically about door seems like it should lend itself to exploration.

The Poet by Violacrimosum 2015-04-23T02:10:00

We want to play your game, but the link is broken!

Valo/Varjo by Windmill Games 2015-04-21T12:24:00

This is delightful. This is the first game I've seen that I'll come back to after I've voted.

The music got a little planky for me, but I loved the duDuh of picking up a triangle.

I liked the mechanic of moving the weapon when you yourself were pinned.

Skull Bomb by mattmirrorfish 2015-04-20T23:54:00

Very pretty, and the voice over is well conceived and well-executed. It would be nice if the shift-run a *little* faster -- I got tired of looking, for the objective, so never successfully blew myself up.

Which is a good thing, I guess?

Fish Smacker by Garrett Hoofman 2015-05-05T23:31:00

Who can argue with death by a thousand tiny noms?

Given that you rewrote your entire 2D engine in the same weekend, finishing a game at all is an impressive feat.

Vocal Power by JohnGalt 2015-04-24T02:20:00

That was really cool! I think it would have been neat to have to control a debate -- two people talking, two buttons, and two sets of goals.

Great idea, executed simply and well.

Falling To Death by allanolivei 2015-04-25T00:47:00

Neat idea! It was really hard to tell what damage I had done -- the score card would tell me I had cause 100's of points of human damage, but as far as I could tell, I missed all the people.

I also landed on the roof of another building once, hoping to damage it, but instead the game just stalled.

Once you've finished the art, sound, and damage effects, it could be really cool!

KILLIPEDES by calavera 2015-04-20T23:32:00

It is fun to fart centipedes!

Didn't entirely grok how to kill enemies, but I loved the way everything looked. Very stylish!

An Unconventional Error by Joe Lawrence 2015-04-22T00:14:00

This was the first game that got a full fist pump when I won. Love it love it love it. Really great work.

NOPAEW by Anikki 2015-04-24T13:05:00

Super stylish. This is a game I could happily watch someone play.

Unfortunately, it's also one of the few entries that requires the play to actually be *skilled* -- so I didn't get very far myself :(

Great graphics, great mood -- I didn't get far enough to see how the theme played out.

Turbo Super Smash Battle Chicken Royale Between Worlds Ultimate HD Remix and Knuckles by Br_uno 2015-04-23T01:18:00

Haha! It's quop meets the fish-slapping dance! Love it.

Please opt out of the audio category, though -- you didn't make the audio :)

Sorry Humans by ChaosCult 2015-04-28T23:43:00

Looks great! Very stylish, and a good idea.

I had a lot of trouble with the camera -- couldn't see the whole level, and could only occasionally succeed at panning the camera.

As others said, boring, physical, push-these-buttons kind of instructions would have helped more than the flavor text.

Some red-alert light-and-sound would have made clear that there was time pressure.

Great work!

Magnets & Lasers by Dustician 2015-04-23T02:06:00

Boy this is very difficult! It's a great concept, though! I think the addition of some rhythmic music would help me time my re-tries; and better graphics would make me less mad when I fail. But that's all easy to improve now that you have time.

The core gameplay is clear and fair. Great work!

The narrator is dyxleic by madflame991 2015-04-23T19:12:00

Neat idea! I'd love to have a 'max number of moves needed' indicator.

As others mentioned, I stopped reading the story almost immediately, and concentrated on the word.

Snowball's Chance by MasterOfNaN 2015-04-21T23:19:00

Haha, I also noticed we had very similar names :D

Very nice work on yours -- much more suitable for the theme. I love the way the snowman gets 'wetter' as it melts. As others noted, there's a lot of backing away -- would be nice to have some baffles to hide behind now and again.

Archittack by jkloo 2015-05-05T23:28:00

Great work! It looks really polished, given the time you had available, and I know lots of time was spent trying to work on the balance of play.

I think, with some more work on evening out the gameplay, this could be a really great party game. Fast and silly.

SNIFF by dyfer 2015-05-05T23:24:00

Hey, really great work.

As others noted, the controls were pretty hard to work with, and having to return all the way to the start was frustrating in a "I think I'll go do something else" way, not a "oooh, I'll beat this if it's the last thing I do" way.

The drug effects were cool, and just enough to make motion difficult. It would have been neat to see a location that explained why drugs allow you to walk through walls, etc -- the asylum is (again, as others noted) a bit of a tired idea, and the least exciting part of the game to me.

Still, super cool work, and a great accomplishment for 72 hours!

Ding Dang Doom by Qui 2015-04-22T00:07:00

Love the triangle as a weapon; love the flavor text in the instructions. It all looks very good, though a little more animation in the enemies would have been more intimidating.

SHAFTED by richiebranson 2015-04-22T00:30:00

Great voice acting, great graphics -- a little anticlimactic if you manage to guess the right elevator too quickly -- but a great approach to the theme. Nice work!

The Cleansing of Floaro's Tomb by Hopscotch 2015-04-21T01:49:00

Very cool idea. Made me think of playing with ants as a kid, trying to direct them.

It's pretty hard, and I'd agree with feeeholdgames that it would be more fun if everyone were a little more predictable.

Great idea, though, and cleanly executed.

Ballad of Fury by piggypiggypiggy 2015-05-05T23:37:00

My mind is blown by how much y'all accomplished in such a short time. You picked an intense genre of game, and then a full multi-level scale -- so much work!

Without the hint that there's no penalty for playing notes you shouldn't, I don't think I would have made it to the end.

Maybe some little bios about each enemy could give hints about which kind of music would be most damaging?

HazMat Run by Hatt 2015-04-23T19:06:00

Fun concept!

As others noted, it's a real bummer that once you run into an edge you can't get past it.

Is it possible that you've made it so velocity can decrease but never increase? :)

Dysforgiveness by evilseanbot 2015-04-25T00:17:00

Cool way to explore dysmorphia!

It might benefit from a random deal at the beginning -- sometimes you get *some* of what you want.

At the moment, it's open to be played collaboratively or competitively; it might be interesting to explore modifications that push it more towards one or the other.

Great work!

Space Cripes 2 by jbasinger 2015-04-20T00:05:00

Haha this is fun! It's challenging to retrain yourself to think this way -- to have only one axis of control, and it's roll. Nice work.
