LD39 — Running out of Power

Frankenstorm by TerraCottaFrog 2017-08-03T04:54:29Z

This was pretty fun! I found that the game became almost unplayable in the boss level, as the boss kept generating mini-clouds, seemingly without a limit. The screen was soon filled with lightning, and I had to quit just to get out of the game! Other than that issue, I was having a pretty fun time playing! :)

AstroMouse by SkullPixel 2017-08-05T05:03:38Z

This is really fun! I wish that I could see the outside of the ship at the same time as the inside, as to better manage what's going on, though I'm sure that being unable to see where you're going is half the fun! It's a really cool, original idea, and along with the art, this is one of my favorite entries in this LDJAM! Great job! :)

On/Off by ThePelranthean 2017-08-03T02:07:55Z

Cool! A more visual connection between power-use and your robot would be cool, like little electric particles, or what-not. It's a pretty cool concept, and with some polish, could have some really cool puzzle potential! :D

Superbman by coomzy 2017-08-05T04:28:14Z

I love wall-jumping, so this was definitely my bag! Just a few suggestions:

It felt like the theme was tacked on with the line 'Oh no, I've run out of power!' at the start. The theme didn't affect gameplay, so maybe next time try to tie the theme in a little more!

The game was a pretty sizeable download, and a little CPU intensive for what's happening on the screen. My computer was chugging along just to keep up, so maybe it might be worth optimizing your art or sound assets a little bit in the future!

Other than that, I had a great time playing it. Wall-jumpers are always very addictive to me. :)

Dashfister by pkenney 2017-08-03T04:33:20Z

I love the feel of the dash mechanic! Those strange bunny enemies are slightly terrifying, but I'm sure that's what you were going for! :P

I'd love to play this on a gamepad with a little more polish; setting up individual levels with unique layouts and puzzles would really elevate the already-great controls! Great job!

Artax by Flaterectomy 2017-08-05T04:37:14Z

So cute! I love the way that the protagonist calls for the robot; it's super charming, and adds a whole level of puzzle gameplay that wouldn't be there otherwise. Love it! Also, the art is fantastic. Great job all around!

Space Dog by Thygrrr 2017-08-03T01:59:48Z

This is great! Super stressful, might I add, but a really cool concept! I'm sure that after multiple playthroughs I'd be able to get a handle on the tasks that need to be accomplished, but on my first run I killed the entire crew within a minute or so. Great job!

Shy Gladiator by caranha 2017-08-03T04:45:10Z

Man, I love this game. Such a great concept, though it's very difficult, and the enemies do live for quite some time! I'm going to have to tackle it again tomorrow to see how far I can get, as that Cyclops just doesn't want to let me live. Great job! :D

PowerCubeStationBox™ by NueboMundo 2017-08-05T04:57:43Z

Oh my goodness. This is such a great concept, and the game itself is so amazingly well-crafted, but I CAN'T STAND IT. Haha. I had to rage quit twice! :P That's probably the point though, isn't it? Regardless of how poor I personally am at time-management and general multitasking, this is a super cool game, and really incredibly done. Great job!

Studentron by Konstantin Boyko 2017-08-05T04:12:28Z

The balance is pretty tough, but it's a pretty cool idea! I'm always down to play a good typing-accuracy test, so I might come back to this one just to practice my typing accuracy! The theme is really cool too, but the commands (especially the ones using / and directional commands) aren't very intuitive. Great work though, I had a great time playing it! :D

PLUG ME ! by Ramou 2017-08-05T04:48:28Z

Cool graphics! Would have been nice to have a restart button, as I definitely wanted to play again at the end! Also, calling the player a loser after they took the time to play your game is a little mean, don't you think? :P Either way, lots of effort clearly went into this, and with some polish and playtesting, you could probably market this on iOS! Great job!

PowerGem Arena by Wizard.Exe 2017-08-05T04:18:02Z

Ahh, this is my type of game. Great SFX, nice clean art and a super addictive pace! It would have been cool to see some sort of innovation in the gameplay department beyond the life bar also acting as a power bar, but I won't lie, sometimes it's nice to have something familiar like this, just for some good-ol-fashioned high score chasing. Great job! :)

Thanks Jezzamon and Caranha!

The rocket can be redirected from the battery by using magnesis (wind power + Z). In the final release, I'll make sure that the instructions are a little more clear on this! Sound and music will be in the final version as well! ;)

And yeah, Jezzamon, I'll put some gifs up for sure! Thanks for the suggestion! :D

Stargust by eggnog 2017-08-03T04:06:54Z

Thanks ThePelranthean! I figured that complex instructions would be better than the slightly stinted instructions within the game itself. I'll certainly get to the sound when my official launch on Twitter comes around later this week, so keep your eyes peeled! ;)

Also, I love clouds too! They should totally be in more games. :P

Thanks everybody! To answer you each in turn ...

Peter Sheehan: The chompers were fun to animate, so I'm glad you liked them! If I ever release a sequel or an enhanced version, I'll definitely consider easing players into the concept a little more smoothly! Thanks for the feedback! :)

PBG: I'm super proud to rep PICO-8, it's just such an awesome program, with such a great community! I definitely agree that the water and wind powers would be easier if mapped to a 4-button controller instead of the 2-button system. Perhaps that'll be rectified in a sequel down the road! :D Thanks for your input!

VarelseGames: Thanks so much! :)

Phobos001: Keeping your lightning power up is a little tricky, as it uses nearly 3/4 of your water power! Only one lightning bolt at a time can be used, so it can indeed be a little tricky to stay on top of! I'm glad you found it fun to keep the chompers out of the garden, thanks so much for the feedback! :)

prettylucky: If you sit on the Wind Power Generator, you can just hold Z and use magnesis when the missile is close to the ground, so it'll just land in the garden. In any future versions, I'll make magnesis a little more powerful, or the missile a little bit easier to redirect. A scrollable power menu might have rectified the current 2-button system I'm using ... hmm. I'll keep that in mind for any future version! Thanks so much for your thoughtful response! :D

Aww, thanks for the comments everybody! And now, the responses!

ArticNet: Thanks! Simple & effective is what I was aiming for here; avoiding unnecessary graphical complexities helped me nail down the feel of the game more quickly! Thanks for the comment!

stevenjmiller: It seems that the rocket difficulty is a running theme in my player feedback! I definitely agree, sometimes it's hard to see past my own ideas while developing, so it's great to hear that there are some things I need to tweak. I'll definitely adjust the rockets before the official release! Thanks for the feedback!

oab: Yeah, that seems to be in line with how people are feeling. I'll adjust the difficulty before the official release, so hopefully it'll be a little more accessible at that time! :) Thanks for the comment!

Turncoda: I might try to avoid this feeling of stress or powerlessness by draining the Wind and Water bars a little more slowly, even by 5-10%! Hopefully that will help players feel more like they're not constantly wandering back to recharge! Thanks for the comment!

arctic_allosaurus: That seems to be the theme here! I'm taking notes on what's making the game so tricky for people to pick up, so hopefully people will be able to enjoy the cuteness more fully when I officially release it! Thanks for playing!

franfox: The new tutorial will fully explain the use of electricity, but maybe I can make the electricity bar flash when it gets low ... something to convey its importance. Thanks for the suggestions! :D

Stargust by eggnog 2017-08-11T04:26:41Z

NueboMundo: I totally agree that the explanations could have been a little more simple! I've been spending a little time polishing it for release, and conveying what must be done has been my main focus. Thanks for the feedback!

pkenney: I agree that it's a little too hard to balance the four tasks (Rain, Zap, Gust, Magnet), so I'm currently polishing the balance on these moves, so they're a little easier to work with, and the game is a little more lenient on beginner players. People really seem to enjoy the feel of the player, and the idea of being a cloud gardener - perhaps I should release a sequel with a more relaxed vibe? :P Thanks for the comment! :D

Stargust by eggnog 2017-08-13T01:42:58Z

Hey blinry! Thanks for the thoughtful comment! That 'she protec' gif really took off, sometimes the internet moves in mysterious ways, doesn't it?

The button was likely 'X' or 'Z', which along with the arrow keys, are the keys that PICO-8 generally supports. In the final release, I've removed the button keys from the instructions, as it seems that all my playtesters had trouble understanding the symbols. Thanks so much for the input! :D

Clear the River! by SpeedySloth99 2017-08-03T01:53:10Z

Oh no! All of robotkind will perish because of me? :(

This was pretty fun! A longer music loop would be nice, and I'm sure that if you had more time to polish it you'd add all sorts of other debris to the river. Great job! :D

The P.U.R.G.E. Protocol by hhsaez 2017-08-03T02:16:05Z

I love the idea of a 3D quiz show! Also, the whole Portal-esque test subject theme is always a good time. Great job on the graphics, and I'd love to try this with some cool particle effects when you click on your answers, along with some sound effects or white noise from the ship!

SpaceLyft by atomicdad 2017-08-03T01:47:14Z

This was really fun! I love the tricky balance of rotating the ship as well as the blaster! I would definitely like to see some crazy explosion effects in the future, since the asteroids just vanishing into oblivion wasn't as satisfying as it could have been. Still, super fun! :D
