LD39 — Running out of Power

Azrellian Asteroid Field by KunoNoOni 2017-08-02T01:38:37Z

Pretty basic arcade style game with serviceable graphics and easy controls. Could definitely use some iteration on the concept or things to mix up the action, like maybe cross moving asteroids or pickups that clear nearby asteroids, or maybe little chaser fighters (from the fleet that is chasing you) who try to hit or shoot you and you try to lead them into asteroids to destroy them.

As it is you're pretty much at the mercy of the rng to determine if you'll get enough power to keep the run going, and other than that timer the theme doesn't really come into play.

I liked the setting and story, it got me into the game, and I would like to see it fleshed out more.

Cell Battles by Wevel 2017-08-02T04:29:13Z

I am impressed! I usually don't like RTS games and am not very good at them, but the controls for this game were perfect and tight, super intuitive. I felt like I was actually competent at moving my forces where I wanted them. Taking control of nodes to produce more forces and assaulting enemy nodes worked well. Graphics are fun. Good work!

On/Off by ThePelranthean 2017-08-02T01:23:52Z

This was a super good idea, and your visuals did a wonderful job conveying the game, and giving the right feel. Loved the puzzle and exploration aspect. I really wish you had more levels, because at the end of the second level I started realizing the potential you have with this idea!

Robo Power by jahndis 2017-08-02T05:23:00Z

Fun! Music was good, graphics were nice, the game rules made some interesting puzzles. Innovative and well built. Nice work!

LittleBots by Joe Cowman 2017-08-02T00:50:47Z

I wasn't able to get the hang of the controls and movement, never seemed to be able to work with the rings to get the bots through. But fun to pick up the bots and flail them around :) Also, nice goofy looking bots, liked them.

Decaying Card Game by filippy 2017-08-03T04:15:45Z

Great fresh concept, and works the theme in really well. Easy to play. I would love to see it expanded upon! I made it to turn 37. There were a few times early on that there were not many zombies but I had the most powerful cards and wanted to skip a turn or two. Improved graphics and effects to show what was going on, and the addition of sound, would go a long way to making this game a pure joy to play.

Last Sunset by piscythe 2017-08-02T01:18:02Z

I agree with many of the comments here. Nice concept, I loved the idea of matching colors to enemy types, and the blue weapon was really unique. The power drain mechanic was a bit minimal, since it was basically a "you're fine" or "you're dead" and not too much you can do about it other than not getting hit, so probably could use a bit of iterating on that concept.

In all, nice job!

Lead by pvtroswold 2017-08-02T03:18:51Z

This needed a bit more cooking time in the brainstorming department. There is a start but it isn't so much a game yet. But what was there wasn't unpleasant, the music and sound and graphics worked.

Running out of Power by milano23 2017-08-04T20:23:24Z

Game is fun and easy to get into. Ran into a couple times where the level started already solved. Also the difficulty never really changes, would be great if later levels would start to get larger grids and maybe mix things up by having some pieces stuck in place or something. The theme was relevant but not really innovative, would be cool to see you work it in more to the mechanics of the game. Great idea though!

Emergency Evacuation by spacewarp 2017-08-02T05:38:41Z

Very nice take on the theme, and an original game idea! Clean ui and gameplay, a little complex (especially trying to read and understand all the tutorial without playing) but was able to pick it up during the game without too much hassle. Nice job!

A Miner Inconvenience by Nick Rafalski 2017-08-04T21:31:41Z

Great idea, great game! You managed a good bit of content for a short competition. Don't know what else to add that hasn't already been said here.

Away Team by Joe Miller 2017-08-02T04:08:29Z

I like the unique take on the concept, and a game like this is very uncommon for a game jam, good work! UI was easy enough to use, and the game was fun to explore. To be honest the most important area I would say needs to be really polished is the UI, to make it easier to see all the information at a glance. By that I mean make use of unique colors for each stat, maybe use iconography and meters to really convey all the info.

Blocks of Power by mortus 2017-08-04T23:40:07Z

Amazing and I loved it. Impressed that this was done in 48 hours. Buildable and flyable spaceships are one of my favorite styles of games ever. Only thing I would have liked would be a control scheme where the ship always tries to turn to face the mouse, instead of Q and E to do that.

BatteryPackMan by junjunlowpoly 2017-08-02T02:25:55Z

I think it is a good concept and the graphics were very nice. The controls were pretty good, only it was sometimes difficult to stand in the right place to charge something. Juggling your charging and running around to assist the units kept me on my toes!

SpaceBase LD39 by Jason Lothamer 2017-08-03T04:43:46Z

Pretty nice game. It was cool to have to avoid shooting the powercores, made you have to really think about your shots. Also if you were nearly full on power you wanted to avoid collecting the cores yet since you would waste some power, but then they had more opportunity to be shot. Would be great to expand on this game with more ideas and content!

Power Sphere by Sergey Nelga 2017-08-03T04:24:53Z

Enjoyable idea, nice looking (I always love glowy tron-style environments). Fun to try to assassinate the cubes from above. I felt the game was way too slow though, and I couldn't see any indication of my current power so I didn't know how the theme worked in to the gameplay. Also for the future it is always nice to list the controls/how to play in the actual game so players can reference it.

PowerBalanceTD by Infernal 2017-08-02T02:34:50Z

Nice idea to tie the theme to a TD. Needed a bit more variety and depth though for it to really shine as a TD, like alternate generator and tower choices, possibly mechanics like generator range where it can only generate power for things in a certain radius, maybe power capacitors, something that makes the power (and running low) theme really shine. Decent game though, hope you can build on it!

SuperZero by ckRobinson 2017-08-02T02:52:52Z

Sweet idea, a superhero that is gradually losing their powers is a fun concept and works well in this theme. Graphics and sound were decent and served the game well. Various superpowers are always fun, though I wanted more! And having them lock out when you get lower power was a nice touch.

I feel the arena was too wide, there was a lot of dead gameplay time spent running to the next spot and didn't feel like it added to the game. I would have enjoyed more visual feedback when hitting the enemies to know if I was being effective. Good job!

The Big One by Likirus 2017-08-04T21:16:07Z

Decent game, amusing premise. I liked the idea of having two abilities that had differing cooldowns and you had to get the hang of managing them for the optimal time. I would have liked to see the theme explored a bit more with the mechanics of the game, rather than just as a timer to complete the game or fail. In all, good job!

Losing Troops by Adtberp 2017-08-02T02:43:03Z

Enjoyable enough to play around with the forces and defend waves of enemies. It was rough trying to play while not being able to see the whole battlefield at once, not sure why you made it so you had to scroll around to find the enemies. Controls were tough to use with so many groups to command. Didn't really fit the theme too well I felt, I guess running low on forces fits but it isn't like the theme is instrumental to the game concept.

Definitely would be more fun with more polish and options and variety.

Power by KRP 2017-08-02T03:31:13Z

Nice, new idea. Fun gameplay with having to type commands, feels like a hacker, results in some frenetic typing sometimes :) Maybe a bug, but it seemed like my ships didn't want to pick up the power orbs, they just sort of went over to them and sat next to them, then the orbs followed them when i had them move somewhere else. Was I supposed to have them bring the orbs somewhere? Graphics and sound were great and really helped fill out the game. Really wish there was more, keep it up!

Power Struggle by skyr 2017-08-04T01:05:39Z

I definitely liked the direction you took the theme, the whole time I was constantly feeling like the opponents were stealing my power. Dice games are always fun because rolling dice just feels so good. Biggest thing I'd say is that rng can really be mean to you with a bad roll, maybe do 3 rolls where you can hold dice in between, before getting the final result for assigning.

Oh no! Democracy! by Tim Eriksen 2017-08-04T01:15:37Z

Decent, though mostly dictated by rng and choice was usually to take the least unrestful card. Good idea though, I could definitely see this developing into more of a game with a bit more brainstorming. Amusing setting and enjoyable to play around with.

HockeyGame by Steven Adams 2017-08-02T02:02:47Z

Not sure what you were going for with this. It was fun to skate around and use the interesting dual stick controls to try to swing at the puck (a little similar to trying to use an rc car to hit a soccer ball in Rocket League), and if I had my friends over we would have had fun for 10 minutes or so trying to play against each other. But minimal graphics and lack of anything other than the absolute basic puck/goal gameplay and no developed program necessities like menus or a quit option.

PowerGem Arena by Wizard.Exe 2017-08-03T03:38:23Z

Thank you all for playing my game and giving all the wonderful feedback!

I hear what you are all saying about the enemy spawns, I also feel they are too close and need a little adjusting. I'll be working on a tuning update to make enemies give you a little more clearance when spawning, as well as a adjusting a few other numbers for balance.

Also, I will be continuing work on this game even after the jam, I have quite a few things I want to add! More weapons, enemies, spawn patterns, *online leaderboards*, maybe even subweapons or skills, or alternate game modes. Hope you continue to enjoy!

ElectriClick by Cornelia Xaos 2017-08-02T03:46:47Z

Decent, but difficult to figure out. Probably need to play several times to start to understand how the numbers work and what your goal is. Good unique idea though, would like to see how you develop and improve it.

Cosmo Beat by Super Shark 2017-08-08T15:46:46Z

Rhythm. And shmup. Wow. Love pretty much everything about this. Music was fun and got me in the groove, characters were enjoyable with their banter, and the idea was just really innovative. Small things were: my character moved really fast so sometimes it was hard to be precise, and could use more effects and animations to really sell things (like the window when enemies are vulnerable, your attack beam fadeaway or other attack animation, enemy deaths) Thanks for making a fun game!

The Wiz by Michael Feldman 2017-08-03T04:31:38Z

I enjoyed the environment, the pixel art and the integration of sound into the game. The music was nice to listen to and fitting as well. Movement and controls seemed a little buggy. Theme was present but not really innovative, as it just amounted to a timer that you have to recharge. Mood was nice and got me interested in exploring.

Automated Explorer by Aircraft Terrier 2017-08-02T05:10:39Z

Fun little game! Impressive amount of content and polish. Loved the exploration and puzzle elements. Theme is relevant to the game concept. Well done!

Power Loss by Pixel Programmer 2017-08-03T04:04:27Z

Pretty nice game, if a bit standard action platformer. Nice pixel graphics and animations, fun to jump and shoot. Power bar is just a health bar. Maybe next time try to weave the theme in to the gameplay or mechanics more, you'll be surprised at the innovative things you can come up with. Happy jamming!

Powerless Miner by MajamiLTU 2017-08-05T00:46:35Z

One of THE BEST implementations of the theme for this jam! Fun, great all around, I gave you high ratings.

Televised Intelligence Manager (TIM) by ianburnette 2017-08-02T02:18:44Z

I very much enjoyed the idea, the voicing was well done and quite a bit of humor. You took the theme in a different direction than I've seen and did a very good job with that. Not a difficult game but still fun that you explored different uses of the battery.

Zzap by HS_Dave 2017-08-10T01:09:55Z

I feel it was very well put together and provided a fresh puzzle game idea. A good tie in to the theme is the concept of carrying over your remaining power to the next level, so I needed to conserve power and not go for all the points sometimes. The purple tiles didn't seem to fit with the flow of the game quite so well, especially since it was random whether there even were any. I think the large penalty from them and their inconsistency led to this. They might benefit from being redesigned from a different angle, since it looks like you wanted to apply a time pressure to make the player think fast. All in all a good game, I had lots of fun and played through a few times.

Slime Chargers! by thepaperpilot 2017-08-02T03:36:34Z

It just wasn't doing it for me. Felt like the game worked against itself with crushing your own slimes. Silly art and amusing concept of slamming a fortress down to attack. Needed more work on the design.

Pickup all the power! by acoto87 2017-08-02T03:12:55Z

Enjoyable, basic puzzle game idea. Easy to control, graphics worked well. Not really related to the theme, and needs a bit more innovation as it is similar to quite a number of puzzle games that work like this.

Ocean Commotion by Porkeh 2017-08-02T05:01:19Z

The floaty controls make the game more difficult, though it seems like that is the feel you were going for and it definitely works. Interesting idea with having to kind of dig your way to the surface but be careful while doing it. Sorta fun, would be even better with a bit more content and variety, if you fleshed it out a bit.

VamBot by ModalModule 2017-08-02T00:41:18Z

A beat-em-up with a power suck mechanic, not a bad brainstorm idea but definitely needs some more iteration. Would have enjoyed seeing the concept explored further, maybe by having you progress through a level rather than staying stationary in a single room. Having to constantly move forward to find your next victim because you are losing power would be a good driving force.

I'd say you fit the theme pretty well, but you need to work in some extra innovation with the concept to really unlock the fun in this one.

But nice first submission and first published game! Keep it up!

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Not Safe for Teamwork by bradur 2018-12-07T01:01:12Z

I enjoyed this thoroughly, well designed puzzles and well implemented.

Precedence by chauchau 2018-12-06T05:23:08Z

I was drawn in by the visuals, and the mood was well done. Impressive.

Shopping Hell by tinykidtoo 2018-12-05T04:06:50Z

I totally laughed, quite amusing. Kinda got chaotic, so it was hard to actually play, though this may have been the intention given that it was supposed to re-enact black friday :) I loved everyone just throwing cash at the registers trying to buy their things and get out.

Anno Luciferus by madjackmcmad 2018-12-07T23:35:00Z

Great arcadey action with imaginative mechanics. This makes pong/breakout much more interesting! I also had the menu wasd issue, and would have preferred M+KB, but then hooked up the gamepad and all was good.

The Omicron Fleet by cerno-b 2018-12-09T19:06:46Z

Solid idea and fresh! Very impressive amount of work for such a short compo. Love the attack predictions and tactical use of resources, and the narrations and level design really sold the setting. Great job!

Planet 43 by MyFriendTames 2018-12-05T03:02:15Z

Seems like you had a way to go with the game. Some nifty ideas but you probably want to flesh them out more. Frantic clicking was tiring. Good start though.

Slithering Dark by pkenney 2018-12-05T03:24:13Z

Nice job, good submission. Follows the theme pretty well, in a less direct interpretation than most of the submissions. The fog of war really added to the mood. I enjoyed.

Entry for 43rd Ludum Dare by burnedkirby 2018-12-04T04:02:36Z

It was cool to realize after a little that every jump took a piece of you. Thematically nice. Though seems like it is begging for a puzzle element of multiple ways through each board, and you want to find the way that causes you to lose the least amount. music is great, graphics and sound work well. nice job!

Dog Days by ruthiepee 2018-12-05T00:26:31Z

It wasn't much of a game, and not a kind I would normally play. Graphics were nice enough. I would have enjoyed fun sound effects to go along with the silly theme.

Gifts for Satan by patvanmackelberg 2018-12-04T04:36:03Z

hilarious! i loved it. my units kept getting stuck and pathing was hit and miss. loved watching the demons rampaging through my village and destroying everything. gameplay was simple though, only one thing to do and that is timing. simulation was great.

Fenik by Kataware 2018-12-04T03:31:26Z

Impressive amount of content. There is a lot of RPG to it. And lots of music too! I don't quite like how the ui covers so much of the game space. I felt a lot of mood from the phoenix talking to you all the time. Overall I liked it!

Riddles of Sacrifice by AdroitConceptions 2018-12-04T01:19:05Z

quite enjoyable. i liked trying to optimize my route and pick my downgrades to fit. i wasn't a fan of the music so much, but the sfx worked.

Dungeon of Sacrifice by kantieno 2018-12-06T04:33:53Z

I enjoyed, nicely done. It's a fun take on binding of isaac. Would love to see what you do with it.

Blight Tower by jeplmr 2018-12-04T03:11:57Z

I liked the design of the level and the shapes, the tower is imposing and I felt a threat. Easy controls, rocket launcher is fun. I also liked the idea that the things you need to win also turn against you.

I felt the game is too simple, though understandable given the time limitations. It's impressive to have made a 3d shooter in the short time of the event.

Orion Force by Wizard.Exe 2018-12-09T19:22:08Z

Thank you all so much for playing!

I had absolutely intended on having more control over your fleet, like being able to buy more ships between waves with a currency, or pick buffs, etc. But, you know, time getting away and all :)

@carlpilot Yes, the first two levels can basically autopilot, they were intended to allow players time to figure out the game before it required more serious play. Though you can make use of the target picking to reduce losses even then.

@pkenney Wave 8 is the last wave in progression, after that it just repeats wave 8 as you most likely run out of ships each wave. So you got close to the end :)

Graveyard Manager by mAnimal 2018-12-03T23:49:43Z

i wasn't able to figure out what qualities had what effects, so i couldn't really form a strategy. but the concept is amusing and i had fun picking bodies to throw out and which new body to accept. graphics were minimal but did their job and weren't bad, though i would have liked if there were more gravestone styles and they were swapped out when changing corpses.

Coinman by Untitled Studios 2018-12-07T00:44:13Z

I enjoyed wandering around, defeating enemies, and collecting coins. But there seemed to be no choices to make, each room was just the next random encounter with a chest afterward. I liked flinging the coins but it wasn't worthwhile to do it much since you wouldn't get enough to replace them. Overall it was fun, good job.

Cartel hunt! by Bartosz 2018-12-05T02:53:46Z

I had a big problem of starting to scan someone, and forgetting to keep an eye on them, so when a match was positive I had lost them. So I got mad and shot everyone nearby, lol. Quite a lot here especially for the short game jam.

Elemental Storm by BenBurgh 2018-12-05T03:35:25Z

Wow. Boss mechanic was awesome. I loved that killing each element also removed one of the instruments from the music, along with graying out the representations of that element. The moody theme after having killed the boss and realizing that you sacrificed some of the world to assist, eye opening. Obviously this could have been expanded to be a bit more than just a boss fight, if you had more time. I would love to play more!

Justified by MarkoPoloDev 2018-12-03T23:37:23Z

i liked the creepy mood from the music, palette, and talking to ghosts alluding to some event and sacrifices. gameplay was pretty basic, not very exciting. but at least it was functional. the boss had an enjoyable mechanic, after finally figuring it out. quite short, i would want a lot more substance if i were to play a game like this. overall meh, but not bad.

Split Soul by Sthor726 2018-12-04T03:45:33Z

great concept, nice minimal graphics that work well for the gameplay. suuuuper moody and thematic. could have used sound effects, and music beyond a short loop. some good puzzles but not very involved (understandable in 48 hours). very nice! bug: jumping up to platforms, if you rub the side before getting to the top it sticks you there and messes up your jump.

People are money by Caveman54 2018-12-05T03:58:10Z

I couldn't see a lose condition, it was just like a clicker game and was just a matter of making things efficient. Because of that I got bored quickly. Controls weren't very friendly, having to right click and select from a menu to do the few actions became tedious. But you finished making a game, good job, keep at it.

Do It for Their Sake by SuperGamersGames 2018-12-09T18:37:04Z

Took a bit to figure out diagonal moves. Great game, lots of good puzzles with good puzzle progression/pacing.

Sons of Vanity by nkrim 2018-12-06T04:45:30Z

Really creative game idea. I had not expected to see a memory-style game in a LD, lol, let alone one that had me continuing to play. Kudos.

Sacrifice Party by Tornoz 2018-12-05T02:44:06Z

Heheh, it's totally a cooking mama or trauma center type game. Not the *most* innovative but a fun idea and new spin. I played with mouse, but I can tell touch would be lots better. Would have loved to have more steps involved for the higher up demons.

What must be done to stop the night terrors by Isvan 2018-12-04T04:19:46Z

i like the look of it! glowey fire light and shadows are well done. neat concept, i liked running my pack around to avoid monsters

Cold Galaxy by PixelMeal 2018-12-05T02:23:23Z

I loved it. This is a great game idea and it is well constructed. The graphics were inviting, there were plenty of choices that had meaningful impacts, and the theme was core to the mechanics. I was really getting attached to certain crew members and found myself taking probably worse choices to save them. Would have loved sci fi audio and music. Also balancing and tuning of course, as I had to intentionally run my stability out to end the game because I needed to move on, and still got to day 86. Great job!

Keenao's LD43 Game by Keenao 2018-12-06T04:55:46Z

I love me some battle network! Graphics are very nice, and the music is fitting too, wish there was sfx. I didn't really like the play control, it was clunky. Not sure where you were going with the theme, or with fleshing out your game design. But you got a good amount done, keep at it!
