LD39 — Running out of Power

Power Crisis by Gulyasarni66 2017-08-02T00:47:15Z

Nice! I definitely appreciated the throwback visuals and music. I liked how the impact sounds sounded like a kick drum, but where was the laser sound? I wanted a PEW PEW!!! haha a couple of times the flying guys got stuck in the walls, and the sound for them I guess hitting a wall kept repeating, which resulted in a really loud buzzing sound. Also I may be an outlier in having this experience (I have a High dpi screen), but this is what it looked like on my monitor: Screenshot (82).png hahaha I had to squint to play! haha Anyway, enjoyed it! :)

My Kingdom for a Rabbit! by incobalt 2017-08-02T00:12:40Z

Nice! The vibe of the music suited the game well, I felt calm and concentrated while playing. I enjoyed the concept, and definitely "got the hang of it" so to say. Maybe it's just me, but it would've been nice if there was just a bit more visual stimulation. Whether it be still images to represent each activity during the text saying how they did, or even animations of some sort, but of course I understand that all would've been quite difficult in the short amount of time we had. All in all, pleasant game, thanks. :)

Wreckage by cogcomp 2017-08-02T19:32:45Z

ummmm, huh? I died a bunch of times not even seeing what killed me! I guess there's no light, so you can't see the enemies? If you at least emitted light that would help... I was able to latch onto some invisible enemy though, and got to level 2, only to immediately die by some unknown force again... I suppose you could say its a reeeeally hard game... haha

Decaying Card Game by filippy 2017-08-03T08:11:38Z

27 here. It was fun! there was a strange glitch where one card wouldn't drop but instead the little fire cursor was stuck on the screen, and I played another card, and the game continued, but it only spawned me 2 cards after that each time! haha Either way, I enjoyed it! thanks!

Last Sunset by piscythe 2017-08-02T19:25:00Z

This might just be the nature of browser games, but when I accidently moved the cursor past the game window and clicked, the game froze, the first time it eventually came back, but the second time I had to refresh the page and start over. :/ Outside of that, I enjoyed it! I like the different weapon options and the strategy of changing weapons depending on the color of the enemy. the difficulty ramp was a bit steep right after the first boss, as I literally died immediately and wasn't even sure what happened... but I enjoyed it nonetheless! :)

Atlas by Quitra 2017-08-03T08:27:11Z

same here... @quitra! update your link with the "_data" folder!

Don't Go Flat by wh05herlock 2017-08-09T07:25:02Z

Fun game! Disorienting, but fun! haha My only problem was I couldn't really tell if I was shooting sometimes. The lasers should have a visible pathway somehow, in my opinion. Still enjoyed though! :)

A Thirst For Power by bobsleigh 2017-08-02T19:08:38Z

Fun stuff! Only a couple things I would mention and all related to the last boss: there is no way of telling when he or the sentries are about to fire, something like a glint in his eye, or the sentries lighting up just before attacking would be great, otherwise it's a bit unfair. Also, it so happens his power bar was THE EXACT SAME COLOR as the rug, which lines up with it quite often while running around, thus making it impossible to know how much health he has left. I still beat it though! haha

The Power War by yetanother 2017-08-01T23:38:31Z

hmmmm, guess there was no one around... But I did notice a couple things. When moving forward and shooting, the origin of the bullets appears to be unaligned with the "gun". It's interesting that you can get to the edge and it cycles you to the other side, however considering the level is larger than one screen, it's confusing that that would happen. My suggestion would be either for you to cycle to the opposite side of the entire map, or to cut out the cycling altogether. Also, I was gaining points just by existing, is that right? Anyway, the movement felt good. :)

Expectations by thebmxeur 2017-08-02T20:19:25Z

I as well couldn't figure it out. If it's meant to be a puzzle game, good job! haha A little more explanation would be nice though.

Hive Attack! by Runuchok 2017-08-03T07:49:44Z

Like the concept! Perhaps it's intentional that he's so damn slow? haha Also, pushing mechanics are a bit wonky, but that seems pretty common. I gotta try a pushing mechanic in a game to see how hard it must be to code. Other than that, I enjoyed myself. :)

DraBot by gil4 2017-08-03T22:16:46Z

Great art first of all! And yes, I figured even though the vampire robot concept was somewhat unique, that I would still not be the only one who did it. Though we both had very different approaches to it, so that's good. :) Though I read your disclaimer, I still feel at the very least the attack range should have been wider, as I had to get super close to enemies to hit them, meanwhile being bombarded by their attacks. As well, some kind of response on their end would've been good (knockback, freezing in place, etc). Because otherwise they were literally continuing to walk toward me, which led to a dance of buzzing them, running away slightly, buzzing them again, etc. That said, I really liked the variety of enemies and their different attacks. Also, I appreciated the music. You didn't mention who did it? Anyway, great game all in all! :)

rop by cyfixus 2017-08-02T00:24:29Z

I like the concept, but the execution was a bit off in my opinion. First of all, was I supposed to put the boxes at any wall? Second, sometimes the boxes would spawn on the barriers, thus being impossible to pick up. Third, the enemies seemed to stay in relatively one place once they got there, so at times I had no way of placing the second box where I placed the first, because there was now an enemy there. But I definitely enjoyed the diminishing light representing your power, I wanted to do something like that, but didn't have the functionality with the trial version of GMS2 haha

Charge UP: EXTREME! Limited Edition by drinix 2017-08-03T08:22:41Z

Hey bud, so I was able to get the game to show up, albeit at a funky resolution which it switched my entire comp to for the duration, and I know this because although it seemed like it wanted to be fullscreen, it took up the top left corner, leaving the rest of my windows visible on the rest of the screen, as well as a command window with velocity etc written on it, which was interesting. Meanwhile, I tried to jump onto the first platform, but I couldn't jump high enough! haha I'm thinking maybe you built the jump code based on screen resolution and since mine failed to go fullscreen maybe the res wasn't right as well. I'm guessing on your computer you jump higher. Anyway, hard to help beyond that. The character looked cute! :)

Also, you may not be aware, but you have to rate and leave comments on other people's games in order to have "karma" which then gives your game more visibility. I decided to go on the "zero" filter, which shows games that haven't had much or any activity, and that's how I ended up here... just fyi. Play some games! :)

Power Sphere by Sergey Nelga 2017-08-03T01:46:26Z

I agree with others about movement speed, and also about levitation speed, I felt like I was on an elevator to the 100th floor... I like the ai of the enemies. Also, the power sucking concept is one I used too! haha, though I was a little confused about yours, it appeared the ball changed color to signify power? does the power return with time? Anyway, fun nonetheless! :)

arena.sim by Rionisse 2017-08-03T01:37:18Z

Am I the only one who didn't have a cursor in game? Really hard to tell where you're aiming, and my cursor fell out of the game window often. Felt pretty good though, just wish I could see my cursor! haha

Don't Get Fired! by Lazzor 2017-08-01T23:32:57Z

hahaha oh jeez. well I tried! yes, I suppose without any rhyme or reason to the controls it has replay value... Definitely comical. I agree that uncomfortable music would be a good addition, as well as unique cityscapes, ie a different one for each screen. Also, could've been intentional, but I was confused by the fact that there were green bars or red bars under each screen, which I would assume was meant to indicate whether there was power, but then also the screens themselves dimming and lighting individually. It was confusing because at times I got a screen to light up, but the bar was still red, or the screen was dim, but the bar was green. Were they supposed to match or not? Anyway, it definitely made me giggle, so kudos for that! :)

Alien Swarm by oxrock 2017-08-03T07:36:53Z

My only complaints are there should be more gas cans, and the aiming should be rethought, primarily because my cursor kept ending up off the game window, which would then ruin the game! :( But I enjoyed it outside of that. Oh and music would be nice! :)

Power by KRP 2017-08-03T08:03:04Z

Is it just me or is there not a restart? I enjoyed the game a lot, but I had to keep quitting and opening it again to try again. :/

Jerry The Donut Eating Engine Driver by TheLukker 2017-07-31T07:44:11Z

Can't wait to see what eating donuts does! :)

Running out of steam by supremefist 2017-08-02T01:03:49Z

I DID IT!!! haha I was soooo confused at first, thinking the other station was the building before where the bridge was out. But eventually I just tried to go as far as I could, which of course meant tackling that damn hill, I heard "I think I can I think I can" in my head haha, then finally saw it! Thanks for the tip about the brakes as well. :) I wonder, is it even possible to not run out of coal by the end? I barely made it. As far as feedback: MORE LEVELS! haha

PowerGem Arena by Wizard.Exe 2017-08-02T01:12:11Z

FUN! My only critiques are probably just personal preference: I wanna move faster! I was craving like a little deceleration tail when you stop holding a direction, like in space, except not forever, so like a bit of friction. it's a bit hard to code, but I did it one time with just the "friction" built in variable in GMS. And finally, I played like 5 rounds, got to level 2, and only ONE TIME did I get another weapon (flamethrower), more weapon spawns!!! haha All in all, very much enjoyed. :)

Dear Leader's Love Powered Peace Bomb by Zyzzyzzyz 2017-08-03T06:47:17Z

I DID IT! THOSE AMERICAN PIGS NEVER KNEW WHAT HIT 'EM!! haha No but seriously that was fun! Definitely a unique take even if the result was a very simple game. I've only started programming recently as well, using GMS2 and I totally align with the mechanics you started by learning. Good job! There was a bit of a glitch with the controls where sometimes if I was holding left then pressed down it ignored the down command, but it wasn't all the time. Other than that, like others said it felt a bit unfair at times, but eventually I just upped my reaction time game and kicked it's ass! :)

The Wiz by Michael Feldman 2017-08-03T05:35:50Z

Love the vibe, but didn't seem like much of a "game", more like a walking simulator. That said it was very pleasant for what it is. :) I also appreciated the musical sounds, including the talking of the other wizards.

Proto472 by uzyfeo 2017-08-02T00:34:57Z

I played the web version, and got a bit of stuttering, but I figure that was just because it wasn't a stable downloaded executable. I noticed at first I wasn't seeming to get the batteries, then I figured out they must be slightly above me, as in I had to jump to get them. It's hard to notice things like that when moving quickly, and at this 3d angle. Maybe like a small arrow below the battery pointing up would help indicate you need to jump to get it? just a thought. Either way, I enjoyed it! :)

They Call me Satan by Nathan_Nation 2017-08-03T08:28:26Z

Man I wanna play this! the itch.io page doesn't have a link to the game though.... Fix it!!

Pura The Robot by Ramkey 2017-08-03T07:26:30Z

I like it! Funny narrator, fun game, challenging puzzles. I agree about the hitboxes, it could be a bit more fair, and when I dropped the parts sometimes they'd orient a way I wanted and other times they didn't, so I had to keep picking up and dropping them till they were right, was kind of inconvenient. Definitely a great concept though! I don't see how this had anything to do with the theme, as far as I could tell the only time you lost power was getting hit. Also, I got stuck behind a door at one point, and there wasn't (that I could find) a button to restart level! D: I really wanted to beat it! Ooooh well. Good game! :)

Minor Jump by colozz 2017-08-03T01:16:16Z

Yay! Simple concept, simple game, but a challenge to get a good score. All good elements. I agree with it benefiting from sound. Also, not sure if the platforms are procedurally generated, and if they are, I would suggest some kind of rule where they don't get created at the same x axis as the previous one to prevent them being lined up, because its near impossible to jump around the platform directly above you!

Gymtastic by LittleLegend 2017-08-02T19:16:39Z

Hmmm, well the concept is fun, but definitely needed some more work. First of all the "window size" appeared to be off as far as my computer was concerned, the power bar went off the left edges of the screen. As others have mentioned there is extreme lag on the attack, and sometimes the animation didn't happen but the sound did (I had a similar issue with my game so I'm certainly not saying I did much better haha). Also, there were some layer issues, where an enemy was clearly in front of another, yet their image was partially "behind" the other. I solve this in gms2 by having the "depth" be adjusted every gamestep by their y coordinate, not sure how to do it in unity. Also, the beat is good, as a start, just needs some more layers to come in eventually, to keep things interesting. Of course this is all stuff you can improve with time, so don't worry! Congrats fellow first jammer! :)

Powersnek by Aarneus 2017-08-03T01:28:57Z

SWEET! Probably the most fun game I've played so far! I would loooove a bit of animation for the snake's movement from square to square. Just a little something to make it feel even better! Other than that, I liked that the levels were pre-built, because when I didn't understand the cause and effect of certain things, the next time I saw the same thing it would start to click. In a game like this the repetition helps a lot to learn. That said, maybe the first set of levels could be pre-built, then random from there? once the player gets the hang of it? Anyway, very much enjoyed. thanks!

VamBot by ModalModule 2017-07-31T07:51:04Z

Source code doesn't seem to be showing up, so here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!Ak4hb3w_EWntgcpdToWdHZRv3UAB_A Well it showed up now but I can't see a way to delete this (on mobile), anyway, enjoy! :)

VamBot by ModalModule 2017-08-01T22:14:30Z

@supremefist there was a method to my madness. Since they get knocked back, and inevitably you'll need to suck their energy, if I was to make a left facing attack, and they thus get knocked to the left, they will be far away from the pile formed by those coming from the right, this way, regardless of which direction they come from, they pile up nicely together. My strategy: run around them to get to their left and unleash! haha Oh and thanks for the reminder, I am working on a song right now, but will immediately after! Really excited to play everyone's games!

VamBot by ModalModule 2017-08-02T00:53:40Z

@wizard-exe yes well, what with the time constraint as well as the trial version of GMS2 (with limited sprites/objects), I had to make due! haha I tried to create some interest with the parallax bg (which was a first for me), and once I decided for it to be survival, it made sense for it to just be like an infinite factory. I will buy the full version of GMS2 soon, in which case I will definitely be attempting to make actual levels with lots of objects, but probably for a different game. This one serves its purpose. :) Thanks for the feedback!

@nalia1991 sorry! I made up my mind. ;) I can imagine the complaint had I allowed for left attacks: "it's too hard to reach the dead bots! D:" hahaha Thanks for the compliments! I did enjoy it, and I'm also enjoying playing everyone else's games! :)

VamBot by ModalModule 2017-08-02T01:05:25Z

@littlelegend I assumed mine wouldn't be all too unique, however I figured a vampire robot was at least more unique than just a robot! haha

VamBot by ModalModule 2017-08-02T20:23:21Z

@jima actually that is part of the challenge, what happens is after 10 kills, and RNG chooses whether each robot cracks leaving the body for you to suck energy from, or explode (as you would hear/see happen) in which case they disappear, preventing you from taking their energy, with a 50/50 chance. This was to balance the fact that more and more bots are coming, because otherwise you would have an endless supply of energy to suck. I wanted to increase the challenge of the game as it progressed. After 100 kills, it turns to a 33/66 chance for them to crack instead of explode. Hope this makes sense.

VamBot by ModalModule 2017-08-02T21:19:38Z

@jima wow thanks so much!! :):):) by the way, I'm a ld site noob as well, I've been tagging people, but I realize I don't know how to see if I've been tagged. As you responded, perhaps you know?

VamBot by ModalModule 2017-08-03T06:32:30Z

Thanks everyone for the feedback! @jcmonkey it was made with gamemaker. I have had lots of games I've dl'd from this jam give me the "unknown publisher" warning, not sure if that's what you're referring to, but my antivirus says my comp is clean.

@doomshmuck I totally understand where you're coming from on both fronts. I decided to make them spawn from the left for the sake of a little more interesting movement, as otherwise I was just trudging ahead the whole time. I don't know why, but I began to enjoy the circling around them to attack from their left strategy. I did audio last, and after taking too long to make the song (I originally had a 3rd section of the song in mind but didn't have time), I just threw all the sfx/music on really quick and left them all full blast. If I was to have the time, I would totally add volume controls. In regards to the despawning, yes, I had some rounds that felt unfair as well, and yes if I set a rule for if you're low on power to always leave a cracked bot that would be good. I had enough good runs to feel like it was more fair than unfair, so I just went with it.

@sketchycode yes, I would've loved to elaborate and make more bots, I wanted bosses every so often as well (did that in another infinite game I made before, unreleased) and it was awesome, led to way more variety. Alas, I got a late start on the jam, and didn't have time... As per the camera, it technically never moves, so you're right! However, the enemies and bg move corresponding to your movement to make it feel like it's moving, at least that's what I was going for, not sure if there's any other way to make an infinite game in GMS2.

@don-fouts yes, I suppose I should mention definitely programmer art, I am in NO WAY a visual artist, but I like doing games on my own, and just trying my best to portray what's in my head.

Thanks again everyone!

VamBot by ModalModule 2017-08-03T20:27:50Z

Thanks everyone! Ok so what are the rules, I assume I can't upload a patch with left turning, only bugfixes right? Cuz clearly the lot of ya want left turns and I'd wanna give it to ya!

very interesting!

Brawnfire by bitdecay 2020-04-21T04:33:45Z

Dang, that was really hard! haha I had fun trying though. We also made a fire feeding game, though a very different style. :)

Protecting Yggdrasil by TheCrittersCove 2020-04-30T01:47:06Z

that was fun! It took me a minute to get what I needed to make to be able to make other things, but the flashbacks from starcraft started kicking in and I got it going! :)

Burnt Out by ModalModule 2020-04-21T05:09:10Z

@mcprog it should automatically go back to the title screen if you lose, after a bit. Maybe a little too long? But ya, you feed the baby by chopping down trees (space bar), collecting the wood that falls from the tree (walking over it) and dropping it onto him (c). Let me know if you have any more questions! :)

Burnt Out by ModalModule 2020-04-22T07:26:01Z

Thank you all for the nice comments!

@synystercola the seeds are completely random, with a 1:5 chance of spawning, but it definitely seems like some rounds more spawn than others.

@huddybuddygreatness I find him quite cute! :)

@shugor Yes, the lack of a pointer was intentional, to make it more difficult. But I think if I were to make a 2.0 I would add "stumps" where the trees were so you could theoretically memorize the layout of the trees relative to the fire. Unfortunately, I must have failed as a game designer to convey the purpose of the game, which is to keep feeding fire, as quick as possible, so it keeps increasing it's stage from baby, to kid, to teen, to adult, and finally to senior, then once you get him to the amount of "fuel" (one of the metrics in the top left corner) where he would transform again (which happens to be 90), he instead thanks you for giving him a long life, then after a bit of time, it shifts to the next level. So you see, by running out of wood, without getting him past senior, you effectively lose, and it's only a matter of time before the fire starves.

@ssh-randy as I mentioned to shugor, I must have failed to convey the objective in-game, so I'm sorry about that. Once you got the different stages though, hopefully it was clear the goal was to get him to the "final" stage?

Once again, thanks all for taking the time to play and comment on our game! :)

FEED HOLE by Aj Jones 2020-04-30T00:42:41Z

That was fun! The one problem I had was my lobster friend never came back, I think it was after I died, and when I tried to feed the mouth myself it bounced off! haha

Bun-o-gotchi by m110 2020-04-21T06:15:18Z

It pooped at the exact moment I fed it. 10/10

Constance by Oakwarrior 2020-04-30T00:53:52Z

I liked it! Only problem I had was it didn't seem there were good opportunities to get passed guards, I'd keep waiting and waiting and they'd go back and forth in the same spots. Really cool concept though! :)

Keep the Flame Alive by InsanityCode 2020-04-21T04:06:19Z

:( I love the concept and want to play it! bummer.png

The Urban Legend of Nightmare Forest by wheelsx 2020-04-21T06:42:05Z

I think I would've enjoyed it a lot more if it were normal vertical controls as opposed to inverted, and the only option I saw said "invert controls", but I don't believe it actually did anything. I really liked the vibe though!

Chip and Run by Elektroney 2020-04-30T01:55:24Z

hahaha the sound effects immediately cutting off really made me laugh. Very difficult to control (maybe just the physics need tweaking), I couldn't even make a lot of jumps, but I still enjoyed myself :)

Cold Cold World by kursadacar 2020-04-21T07:04:59Z

I actually really enjoyed this! Great job!

Protect the jar by Luc Arnould 2020-04-30T01:36:02Z

Good lord! That was very hard to control, and there were way too many objects to possibly block! I would adjust the amount of objects to start a lot lower at least. Really interesting concept though!

Planet Sitter: The Galactic Inquest by Eckkert 2020-04-21T04:25:56Z

Fun! I actually enjoyed the way the game felt, as well as the actual concept. :)

Carrying the Sun by vidim888 2020-04-22T07:44:56Z

Highest score I've given so far! Complete game, really interesting concept, challenging "puzzles", fun! Of course using unreal's default guy etc is not ideal vs a unique character, but it's clear you spent time more on other aspects of the game, and therefor it was almost irrelevant! :) I also agree music/sfx would be nice, so I would say take this concept and run with it! :D

Meet God Under the Neon Lights by Systematic 2020-04-21T03:46:55Z

Sweet! That was pretty cool. I like the leg movement and the design of the player. It was really hard for me to differentiate the targets from the rest of the scenery at first, but I figured it out. Thanks!

Luna The Woodcutter by Floxnu 2020-04-21T03:37:34Z

Hey! I love the vibe of the graphics and the music. The game itself was a bit glitchy unfortunately, I'm guessing it's procgen foliage, and since they can spawn on the edges of the screen, as I tried to go to the next screen I would get stuck in a loop transitioning back and forth between screens. We actually had the same interpretation of the theme by the way, we made a fire feeding game too! haha A completely different style of game although.

Keep It, Alive' by MarMeron 2020-04-30T01:20:51Z

Could use some more stuff ie spike pits or just things you can't shoot and thus have to dodge in general, but fun regardless!

Make it Count by Carson Bentley 2020-04-21T05:17:17Z

I had no idea what was going on, but it was enjoyable watching the patterns!

Crates N' Gates by HireMeDeveloper 2020-04-21T04:41:38Z

I like the vibe a lot! I never got to break a gate, not sure what I was missing there. My only complaint was the music was too quiet? I have my laptop turned up all the way and could barely hear it. Also, could use some ending screen or info, for when you run out of health.
