LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Shelter by akai_0okami 2017-12-05T01:46:09Z

Oh, I love micromanaging!

My only complaint is that dogs need a buff - they must be thrice as cute!

One Final Task by HuvaaKoodia 2017-12-11T03:03:24Z

I feel that puzzles games are hard for jams, because puzzle design becomes much more important, and you generally have to make a lot more levels. In its current state, it feels like a very standard "rush hour" game. You've got a great starting progression and difficulty curve, and then the last puzzle, and that's it. In lieu of a thought-out assessment, here are some quick thoughts:

-The intermissions between the puzzles don't really add anything, it just interrupts the puzzles.

-I don't like the last puzzle, it's just a stew of everything thrown together. It reminds me of [this custom puzzle](http://i.imgur.com/UyQboiq.png) from The Witness. Filling every space with some mechanic just feels like artifical difficulty.

-Quality of life: Obviously an undo/reset button would be nice. Also, I'd like to be able to have multiple boxes moving at the same time.

-I'm not really sure how it fits the theme? Feels like a very standard puzzle game.

Heart Work by nettleflap 2017-12-04T22:41:36Z

Cool idea! The weakest teammates should be sacrificed for the greater good, to protect the heart.

Marching Band Parade by fancy89 2017-12-05T02:02:22Z

This is so hard, I love it! I agrree with kromeboy's statement. I also had several points where I couldn't click a guy because a car or something was in the way.

L.A.V.A.L.A.M.P. vs Evil Magic Alien Robots by piscythe 2017-12-09T20:40:15Z

Very tough! The controls felt odd at first, but I think they got better as I figured out what I was doing

Larry Kroft and the Temple of Booze by thomz12 2017-12-09T17:29:19Z

Love the direction you chose, with the setting and character! Levels are well-designed!

Smash! Smash! Destroy the West! Jangnanmon! by pudding 2017-12-05T02:18:46Z

Really cool, great twist! I agree with Evan about the challenge thoug.

Tentagraba by Huitre 2017-12-08T03:39:32Z

Haha, I couldn't really get very far. It got tough fast as I forgot which fingers were in the back!

Clones by TechnoNugget 2017-12-04T23:10:54Z

Awesome idea! First life I just went bezerk with shots, then I realized what was happening

Save the Plants by joski 2017-12-09T17:25:36Z

Really fun idea, but it's really hard with akeyboard!

Get Rid of It! by multiplexor 2017-12-28T04:09:57Z

Really hard with a touch pad!

Demon Hunt by AViTT 2017-12-09T17:35:10Z

Really cool idea, but the execution just isn't great. Moving feels weird, aiming is hard, and minimal animations make it difficult to tell what's going on.

Knights and Kings by Chaosinism 2017-12-08T03:58:01Z

Real time chess is a really interesting idea! The controls feel imprecise, but I love it anyway!

Fleet Commander by MagmaFortress 2017-12-04T23:31:50Z

Cool idea, I love the control simplicity.

In Temperance Ruin by sparewizard 2017-12-08T03:25:53Z

Really cool! I quickly got lost on my first try and died before I made it out.

Overkiller by SubWooferX3 2017-12-08T03:50:36Z

Cool idea, but really hard! Your game description is gold.

Great Deal by sunnray 2017-12-05T01:13:04Z

I love the idea! I love the theme of how money corrupts.

Horny Bunny by Thomas FUentes 2017-12-09T17:16:59Z

Funny idea, great execution. I love the gradual shift in the bunny's facial expression s!

Battle on the frontier by GroverTheGrovekeeper 2017-12-05T02:28:46Z

Oh man, I love the story you put into this! My biggest complaint is that it's hard to get started, but it's hard to avoid that with these style games.

Danger Noodle by Matthew Roelle 2017-12-09T17:40:56Z

The controls feel really good! Simple idea, but executed very well.

EDIT: And I love the name

I'll Take You To Tomato Town by adamgryu 2017-12-08T03:33:31Z

Hilarious execution, I love the physics!

One problem I had was my mouse kept moving off the screen

Mr. Moustache by Badosz 2017-12-05T01:07:06Z

Tough game! I also thought the mustaches were good at first, and I got confused when I died.

Mining Empire by Royoyo 2017-12-05T01:36:04Z

I find it very unclear what's going on, between the ships shooting at you and the asteroids and the guy over the radio.

Quantum's Rick by cortexdeveloper 2017-12-09T20:34:56Z

Oh wow, this gets really hard really quick! Great silly game, great for a sit-down with friends. Now very much longevity, though.

BulletCoin by randomphantom 2017-12-04T21:59:42Z

Really cool twist!

Lights Out! by rubr 2017-12-05T01:25:51Z

I'm confused. What can I do from here? Untitled.png

Edit: I figured it out, you have to hit escape to go to the next level

I like the idea of different colors are different powers! Very well done.

Capitalistic Lootboxes Overwhelmed by SimonTheCase 2017-12-04T22:55:30Z

Very flashy!

Noah's Apartment by GastricSparrow 2017-12-04T23:24:39Z

Really cool idea, I love puzzles! It seems like the actual physics determine the outcome, though, which is a bit weird.

Subtraum by TheJayDuck 2017-12-05T00:17:03Z

It gets very disorienting very quickly. Also, I can't really look in the middle - my view keeps snapping up or down?

I'm not here by Jiri Hysek 2017-12-04T23:34:39Z

I love the sounds, they're so funny. Gameplay works well too!

99 Bottles by Technomancy Studios 2017-12-08T03:54:43Z

Very polished, well done!

A Very Average Christmas Dinner by mcallingham 2017-12-05T01:20:31Z

Love the main menu, intro, and theme! It's a really low-key game, which is a nice change of pace.

Soul Matter by Nehvis 2017-12-05T01:53:38Z

Love the idea, brings back Undertale vibes!

Kittie Reaper: A Depressed Cat Tale by jfraser314 2017-12-08T04:03:38Z

The animals move too fast! But great otherwise!

Get in Shape by Prostone 2017-12-04T21:50:54Z

Really cool! I think that the time should increment once for each active game - so if you have three windows open, the time increments by 3 every second, to incentive having more on at once isntead of focusing on one or two.

Color Collider by SarizaGames 2017-12-05T00:21:04Z

Interesting idea - but it feels kind of clunky. Also I think you can remove the extra links if you leave the URL blank

AdBlock Doesn't Work! by talisra22 2017-12-05T00:12:41Z

I get a crash when I try to click the play button?

Shadow and Planet by LanceJZ 2017-12-05T01:39:10Z

The exe doesn't seem to be working for me? It's just not opening

Gladiator Monsters by BenBurgh 2017-12-04T23:45:54Z

@matthew-roelle Could you elaborate on rifle/shotgun? The shotgun shoots a burst of shots with more spread, and the rifle shoots several single shots faster. It works fine for me.

Gladiator Monsters by BenBurgh 2017-12-06T14:08:02Z

@yishalee You can quit with Alt+F4! Hope you aren't trapped forever...

Finally done :D by Tomas.2D 2017-12-09T17:23:02Z

The jumping system feels really weird, and the controls are frustrating. It's great that you produced something though!

Immune Invasion by Chong Lee 2017-12-09T19:48:19Z

It's a really calming game, very nice! Easy to lose yourself in.

Secret by WiseClock 2017-12-09T19:56:51Z

Really cool idea, and it quickly becomes apparent why you shouldn't make friends with everyone.

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Effigies by Geckoo1337 2018-12-09T22:08:45Z

Really cool! Sometimes the order which the effigies move is important, but ambiguous - and puzzles should usually try to minimize ambiguity. Aside from that, I enjoyed it! Could use some polish, with graphics and animations. Good job!

Server Manager by kraftkar 2018-12-06T04:51:42Z

Really cool! I played this game on stream, if you're interested in a live reaction! https://www.twitch.tv/videos/345179013 (21 minutes in)

As Of Yet Unnamed by Flaterectomy 2018-12-04T03:41:51Z

Love it! Really great context for this style of game. Sometimes though it doesnt seem like the rockets always follow the red line?

Perilous Passage by Nick Rafalski 2018-12-08T20:19:12Z

I really like the idea - I only wish there were defined roads, with cars driving on the right side. Just to help guide the bridge position. Multiple times I moved the cars to drive in the middle of the road, which led to them crashing into cars which spawned later. I love the idea of this with the simple game leading to hectic situations!

Make the trip by Dancinoman 2018-12-04T03:50:51Z

Really cool game! My best score is 4788, but I'm not really sure how it's calculated. I did another try with 5/5 people and pretty high hull, and only got ~1800. After my second playthrough I stopped reading the text and tried to min/max points.

Chad Island by TheSquid 2018-12-04T19:17:00Z

While you were out drinking and partying, I studied the game.

We Were 5 by Samusoidal 2018-12-04T03:07:57Z

This is really cool! I had to stop halfway through, but I really like what you've done.

Death and Taxes (you can't escape) by dreadzilla 2018-12-09T00:32:46Z

This could be a great start, but right now it just feels really... empty. There isn't very much to do.

The sound effects don't match up very well, either.

Altar War by Bernhard 2018-12-10T19:30:03Z

Really cool! I agree with torquil's idea that randomizing the altar would be really cool, and incentivize moving more. I was able to get 118 by sticking next to it, focus on throwing in bodies and spamming attack when necesary. I like the slow creep in difficulty, and the sound effects do a great job of being unsettling! (Although my roomate was very annoyed by them!)

The Life of a Corporate Drone by Slashee the Cow 2018-12-09T00:42:47Z

I like this, but I was really easily to juggle everything except work. Others have said about the confusing nature of the red bars, which I agree with.

I really like how this is real-time, and how you take advantage of that with the time commuting. I think you could go further pushing other aspects. It'd be really cool if the bars affected each other, like you need to shop to eat, or if you don't sleep your other bars increase slower. And then you need a way to explain the connections.

Great job!

Orion Force by Wizard.Exe 2018-12-06T04:54:52Z

BulletHealth by Rugbug_Redfern 2018-12-09T01:22:26Z

My first thought was "oh, this idea again", but this is actually done really well! It's great that you have to pick up the health after they die, gives it a real risk-management feel. This could definitely be taken further, great job!

Fighting Souls by RAFFE 2018-12-04T18:27:43Z

Really cool idea, using different characters with different abilities to explore the world. The turn-based combat didn't feel very exciting, maybe it could switch into more intense music. The portals looked really cool, and It was fun to try and juke the enemies.

Fighting Souls by RAFFE 2018-12-04T21:22:01Z

By the way, I should mention I played this game on stream! https://www.twitch.tv/videos/344544405## I started this game 2 hours 7 minutes in. Hope that can help give some better feedback!

Infiltrate by Berkin 2018-12-04T19:17:40Z

Really fun to play, but losing your abilities is a bit too punishing!

Infiltrate by Berkin 2018-12-04T21:23:37Z

By the way, I should mention I played this game on stream! https://www.twitch.tv/videos/344544405## I started this game 2 hours 37 minutes in. I would have liked to play more but I wanted to get lunch. Hope this helps!

The Chickening by Ryvencore 2018-12-04T03:20:32Z

Really goofy game!

Elemental Storm by BenBurgh 2018-12-04T03:13:49Z

@shawn-moore It was on the drawing board to have more feedback on victory/defeat, but I ran out of time haha. I wasn't able to do much play testing during the jam, but I've gotten feedback from other people that the water is too hard. (This was after I nerfed all the bosses to take less hits!) I might look into the rules about making small changes to see if nerfing is allowed.

Elemental Storm by BenBurgh 2018-12-04T15:20:27Z

@frosty Oof, I was worried that could happen but I never ran into it myself. I'll take a look - which bosses did you fight?

@rsim I didn't have enough time to telegraph it well... the 2D stuff at the start is just background objects. When you get into a fight (which will be clear), the bosses are 2D and their attacks are 3D.

@frenchie I wish I had more time for the art to! But with only 48 hours, sacrifices must be made ;)

I didn't like having the shots be so slow, and for some reason I didn't think to make it faster and increase their health to compensate. I guess I got tunnel visioned, but that would help!

Elemental Storm by BenBurgh 2018-12-05T05:25:53Z

@kraftkar Thanks for the write-up! I agree with about all of your points. I'd like to give more feedback for shooting and death/victory, but I wanted it to look better first. I was using spheres and cubes up until the last 8 hours, and I didn't even have time to draw everything I wanted to! I tried to do a bunch of playtesting, but I didn't run into very many bugs until after it was finished. (I think they have to do with if you and the boss both die in a short time frame?)

Frenchie: That's awesome, I'm honored! I'll @ you in a new comment with my thoughts after I watch it

Elemental Storm by BenBurgh 2018-12-05T06:14:29Z

@frenchie Thanks for the feature! I got halfway through, before I realized I need to go to sleep.

A bullet hell style was actually closer to my original vision, but I didn't want to implement a different health system for the bosses. For the Earth, I lowered the collider a bit so it so if it spawned on top of you you wouldn't instantly take damage. It makes sense that the objects should be responsible for themselves, but something that I wasn't really concerned with in the timeframe.

Regarding IEnumarators, I think it's a point of the creator understanding its exact purpose which may not be as clear to an onlooker. I probably do rely on them to much though, haha.

I think the presentation and structure of your stream work really well, and you're great at talking through your thoughs. It shows how small changes can make big differences in feel. You were able to predict a lot of the behavior and structures, which is very impressive. You said it was your first episode, but you present it really well!

Elemental Storm by BenBurgh 2018-12-06T17:20:42Z

@afroant Thank you for the kind words, that's very high praise! I'm planning on making a post-jam version to improve the feel and add drawings to the attacks.

The Path to Vegetarianism by PhillSerrazina 2018-12-04T02:45:39Z

Goofy idea! I got stuck on the alternate path level.

Horny Demons by Team Infernus 2018-12-07T23:59:27Z

I like the idea, but it's rough around a couple edges and would benefit from a tutorial and better UI. The goal isn't clear, and I lost a couple times before I realized each prisoner ate food. (Great idea and makes sense, but there's no indication of that). There's also no representation of how many cards are in your deck. And once you have an engine going, it's just a matter of playing until you draw all the cards you need.

Don't Take my Stuff! by OrionDark7 2018-12-08T23:08:05Z

Running Low by Daniel Grinshpon 2018-12-04T02:37:48Z

It's actually really fun! The biggest issue is that I noticed all the enemies were spawning from the same area, so I could literally just camp them.

Really cool idea! Could be the basis for a great puzzle-adventure game.

Keep Trying by seggyx 2018-12-08T04:50:01Z

Very nice! I like how this differentiates itself from similar games by having more focus on the platforming.

Can't save them all! by lilou_cormic 2018-12-03T00:07:32Z

I saved 76! Neat puzzle, although I think it would help if we knew which ways the attackers would move before each turn

Running Wild by Jannick Larsen 2018-12-04T02:29:49Z

Just delete them by Dock Frankenstein 2018-12-07T18:38:35Z

Really cool idea, I love these meta-level games.

And just a tip: If you play and rate other people's games, it increases your visibility. This deserves to be seen, so try to play some stuff this weekend!

Expendibots by pandan 2018-12-08T20:35:37Z

I really wanted to like it, but between the weird camera and tank physics I found myself more frustrated than having fun. Most of the time, losing tanks didn't feel like a sacrifice made for the greater good, but just something that happened just because.

RacecaЯ 1: Sacrificial Racer by Thulium Games 2018-12-08T21:50:44Z

It doesn't really feel like a sacrifice, since most racing games already present the same choice. Maybe if there were much more options, it could work better, but it feels very bland. As a fan of racing games, I wanted to enjoy this, but it just didn't do it for me.

Also, the stat selection screen is hard to look at with the bright colors and colored drop shadow, I'd tone it down a bit there.

Key Sacrifice by Marc Garcia-Penche 2018-12-09T22:03:09Z

Neat idea! Makes me wonder about the boundary between typing games and abstract controls...

Death Metal Crowd Pusher by WizardOfOzzy 2018-12-08T04:51:02Z

Pigheaded Pirate by Shawn Moore 2018-12-04T17:26:30Z

Really cool! I loved the goofy aesthetic and theme, it's a really cool exploration of sacrifice as a mutually beneficial relationship. There were several times when we got stuck though, and I died multiple times. With more time than 48 hours to work on this I could see it being really fun!

Pigheaded Pirate by Shawn Moore 2018-12-04T21:19:46Z

Oh man there's a third level? The second one went on so long, haha!

BTW, I played your game on stream! The vod is available https://www.twitch.tv/videos/344544405##, this game starts about one hour ten minutes in.

Dare to Risk by Morris Beardbarian 2018-12-07T23:25:11Z

Fun the first time, but it doesn't really have a reason to play again. The strategy seems one dimensional, since you're trying just to maximize troop output. Espcially since you can upgrade all units every single turn. I think limited number of actions, which you can distribute however you like (i.e. upgrading the same place multiple times) would help a lot too. All of the actions could also be streamlined, you shouldn't have to go into a menu for every single action.
