Goofy idea! I got stuck on the alternate path level.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD43 → The Path to Vegetarianism

Goofy idea! I got stuck on the alternate path level.
Interesting little game, I wouldn't say it's particularly fun because of the trolly trail and error level design. But I guess that wasn't really the point. I like how you integrated the text into the levels, especially that you have multiple texts that can show up on the first level if you eat the meat multiple times is a nice touch
I really liked this! It has great humor and catchy rhythms for the music. I really like the winding path level. It finishes off nicely, with an ideal difficulty curve! The graphics are simple, but convey what they need to. Keep up the great work!
Definitely an interesting theme. I loved the music (what did you use to make it?) and the graphics were pretty good, even if there wasn't a huge variety of them (but I like what you did with the character development). Like @benburgh I got stuck on the alternate path level, I couldn't seem to find a way out of it. I also found some of the way the meats just appeared out of nowhere was frustrating more than it was sending a message (I mean, I get the message, but I was too busy being frustrated to appreciate it).
that was bit brutal... wasn't sure i wanted to continue.... but i did, and i am happy to say I figured it.... You sir are a liar, you've mislead to believe there was a safe path... I feel betrayed... Also it would appear you have spent lots of pennys on constructing your ground visuals, perhaps some of them should have gone into sound effects....
Overall fun, once i got over some wee things.... Good Job!
Interesting! That's a nice theme to pick, although I'd disagree with the final statement :') Kind of I Wanna Be The Guy-ish, generally not too mean although the "Sometimes you have to find new paths" level took me a bit. It felt that the platforming engine could've been more forgiving regarding jumping when next to the edge of a platform - I fell of a couple times in situations where it felt like I was still safely on ground. Still, neat!
@benburgh Thank you! That means I did a good job designing it, ahah!
@cute-dog-irl Yeah, I was going for a rage game so this game is definitely for the crazy individuals that play stuff like Cat Mario (Bless them and their patience)
@plagueofminds Thank you! That's super nice to read! Glad you liked it!
@slashee-the-cow I used BoscaCeol! Thank you for reminding me to put that in the game's description. I was going for frustrating so that is kind of a compliment to me, ahah. Personally, I don't really enjoying rage games, but I must say that they're an easy go-to when you're under pressure to make them!
@acuriosity Wow, I actually don't know how to feel about this comment, ahah! Thank you, I think! And yes, I do admit I slacked on the SFX, I was so invested on making the music that I completely forgot about the rest of the sounds. But oh well, that's the importance of TODO lists and the consequences to not making them, better luck next time! Thank you for your patience and comment! :)
@hempuli Thank you! Ah yes, the platforming balance took me a bit to figure out (Perfectly aware that it is not perfect!). Nonetheless, I'm glad you enjoyed it and that you were able to beat it!
What's the trick for getting past the 'Alternate path' level?
Oh, NM, I got it!
I had quite large problems with controlling the game - the collision boxes doesn't seem quite right to me (or the game is too hard). I literally couldn't get past level 3 because it was impossible to find good position to jump up.
Other than that it's not that bad, the narrative is quite good - and the idea is neat.
funny game! remenberme cat mario games. Good work.
Interesting game, but I had some trouble with the controls :) it felt a bit clunky. The collision boxes felt a bit off and it was a bit jittery at times.
But it is nice that you managed to make a full game with multiple stages and an interesting concept for the compo, well done!
Overall solid game! Despite what other people say and get stuck on (I did complete it, haha), I enjoyed the cheeky level design.
Interesting game! I liked that the character actually changes his appearance with each level. The facial expressions given to him also emote a lot about the character which is really cool as it doesn't need to have animation.
At the level where the meat first appears (level 2?), there was a very jarring camera snapping motion when I jump onto the platform with the meat. The camera would snap upward. This was very distracting and confused me for a bit as it also caused the game to restart, which I realised was because I had eaten the meat, when I am not supposed to.
The text in the game is interesting. I am always looking forward to read the text that appears and the levels even reveal some story. I like the level's twists and surprises, even if they cause me to restart with frustration. For the longer levels, I would prefer if there were checkpoints. It starts to lose the fun when I can lose unreasonably by something I am never able to predict or foresee and can be deemed as unfair by the player so you may want to minimize that frustration with checkpoint intervals. Having checkpoints also makes the game be more forgiving to player and open to more casual players, unless you intend this game to be aimed at hardcore players only.
The controls need improvement. They feel very clunky and the character feels too floaty, without any weight. I would also appreciate if holding the jump key actually made me continuously jump, without having to release the key and tap it again to perform another jump. There are also instances when I am on the ground, but I cannot jump. This usually occurs when my character is standing near the edge of a platform. I'm not far enough to fall off, but I am somewhat considered by the game to be floating and therefore cannot jump. It caused this level below in particular to be very rage-inducing as I simply could not time my jumps properly and therefore did not bother continuing. Screenshot 2018-12-15 06.21.50.png Nevertheless, this is a cool idea and I hope somebody makes a video about this game so I can see what happens after this level. I love the music too. Good job on the game :)
Cool idea and storytelling :) I also liked the level design, great work there!
Great use of gameplay to tell a story.
Really well done! The text was well-written, it was interesting and thoughtful without being overbearing. I think it applies not just to vegetarianism, but to dealing with any form of addiction as well. You have to keep dealing with your cravings, and keep getting back on the horse even when you fail. I loved the trolly levels, it was a lot of fun dodging the chicken legs that seem to come out of nowhere :)
I especially liked the "choose a different path" level. Although it was a little frustrating, the solution makes sense and fits the theme well.
As others have said, the controls/hitboxes could be improved, but all in all a fantastic effort for 48 hours!
Fun theme idea! Loved that the pacman changed from evil monster to happy green fella over time. The jumping and avoiding was done pretty well, but my patience is not that great - so trying again for 10 times is a bit too much for me. (I also am not that great at it)
Fun mood and good controls!
Hilarious and great game! The character slowly changing is what kept me going. The jumping is not always as reliable and the sudden meat attacks are sometimes frustrating. Great game with a great narrative!
The idea is pretty neat. The texts are cool and were what made me stay. The transformation of the character is a nice effect. Good story! However, the gamplay was really infuriating. I have to say, I quit on the alternating paths level. It was to much random restarting for me to bear.
Level design is quite punishing :) but it was a lot of fun to play
