LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Coyote's Satiation by boblova 2018-12-05T01:47:15Z

I definitely agree that E was a bad button to use for one of the basic actions while controlling with wasd, it makes the game way harder in an undesirable way, you could have used space or something. Other than that I also agree the controls are very... slippery? Not sure what the right word is, I think the type of controls could work with the type of game it is, but it feels very unnatural because humans generally don't speed up so slowly like a car.

Also to increase the challenge you made more enemies spawn after a while, but they just ended up walking in each other and then they continued to walk in each other because they have the same AI. I don't have personal experience with this, but it is a pretty common problem, you can fix it giving each enemy slightly different AI.

Other than that I liked the progression, reminds me of katamari a bit.

ICATUS and the Golden Ball of Yarn by freakoftheyear 2018-12-05T15:14:26Z

Sound and especially art are great, very cute.

I feel like the hitbox for hitting the cats is way to big, it often felt like I was really far away and still got hit (seemed to happen mostly when jumping). The controls are a bit difficult because of how far you go after pressing a direction for a very short time.

Overal quite a good game though!

Hey nice game! Out of the 5 games I've rated so far this one is definitely the best (Presentation, completeness, fun). I do have some problems with the game though.

First of all the concept of the game is basically just a regular bullet hell game but with oxygen mechanics added. Honestly for a large part of the game it just feels like a regular bullet hell, I got to round 5 on my first run without having to understand or think about the oxygen mechanic at all, then I died because I didn't sacrifice anything because I didn't entirely understand the mechanics (I did not read the instructions). Same thing on my second run, I got to round 5 then sacrificed 1 ship and some crew and ended up barely winning.

So the sacrificing mechanic should imo be more prevalent, since it's basically the main selling point.

I think there are 2 main ways to solve this problem that I can think of and those are: 1. Make the game harder so the average player has to sacrifice more to win. 2. Make it so that you lose and gain oxygen more quickly.

I haven't thoroughly thought about how to balance this, but I feel like option 2 would probably make for a more unique/interesting game, it means the player isn't only in danger after a few rounds and you could have more quick thinking with sacrificing during actual gameplay instead of only between rounds which could be fun.

Also for this kind of mechanic you basically do the reverse Mario Kart game balancing (not sure what the technical game designy term for this is) where you buff players for doing well and nerf players for doing poorly, so doing slightly worse early in the game might mean that you do significantly worse later because you don't have as much fire rate or as many ships to help you. Which might not work very well in a linear type of game but could maybe work in an endless game? Not sure honestly, just something to keep in mind if you ever continue with this game.

And a very small complaint but still wanted to mention it, I don't like that P is continue, I have my left hand on wasd and my right hand on the mouse, neither of those can quickly go to P!

This comment ended up being a lot longer than expected :p

Path of the Programmer by themadprogramer 2018-12-05T21:23:23Z

Hmm, interesting concept, but there isn't really much too this game I feel. It wasn't very clear how much schoolwork you needed to do to pass exams so I never had any idea how I was doing. The calendar was very hard to read because of how it's in the background behind the menu's. I think it might be nice to have some more options or more things to worry about than just exams and the final programming score.

The Path to Vegetarianism by PhillSerrazina 2018-12-05T21:03:05Z

Interesting little game, I wouldn't say it's particularly fun because of the trolly trail and error level design. But I guess that wasn't really the point. I like how you integrated the text into the levels, especially that you have multiple texts that can show up on the first level if you eat the meat multiple times is a nice touch

Fruit Blast by Bibicio 2018-12-05T18:10:07Z

Neat game, good sound and nice progression.

My biggest problem with the game is that I feel like the sacrificing mechanic just functions like a simple fuel refill, it might have been fun if by sacrificing your crew you also lose something mechanically. Like maybe if there were enemies you could have one crew member that can shoot and if you sacrifice him for fuel you lose the ability to shoot, or something similar.

But I understand that that might be too much to ask for in 48 hours, still very well made!

Sacrifised by Aret24 2018-12-05T15:53:11Z

Pretty fun game, uses the theme very well, the controls are a bit stiff though. Also I think it's probably best to only make a few good levels instead of making this many levels for a gamejam. The fact that the different areas have different colors is a nice touch.

I got to the part with the lasers where most of the challenge just comes from regular platforming instead of the central mechanic, while I feel the challenge of the game should be more related to the puzzle solving with the death mechanic.

The itch.io page doesn't work, you probably haven't set it to public yet! (I did the same thing :^))

Explosive Sacrifice by Cute Dog IRL 2018-12-06T01:53:49Z

@slashee-the-cow yeah, when making the second level I thought it was easy and a logical next step after level 1, but I have heard from several people now that they couldn't get past that level. You gotta hit the top one from the left to get to the altar, which is not super hard when you know how the mines works, but it's pretty physics based which requires more of a learning curve than I enticipated. I think I should make the mines trajectory just straight up instead, or at least restrict the physics more, would make some of the later levels more consistent/less frustrating too. And in general I'll try to make my next gamejam game a bit easier.

For explaining what to do at the start. There was supposed to be some story that gives you a hint on what to do which I scrapt last minute, so that's why there is no explanation. But I think most players can figure it out like this too.

As far as sound goes... I have almost no experience with sound and had enough trouble making these sound effects. I did have 3 sounds for the player getting hit, but since it's completely random you will still likely hear the same sound multipletimes in a row sometimes. I recorded my voice and the sounds of random objects I found laying around and slightly edited them in audacity to make sound effects, which was kinda tedious and didn't have great results, so I'll have to figure something else out there.

And for the art, yeah I agree.

Edit: I almost forgot, thanks for the good feedback! :D

Have Gods Forsaken Us? by Dragonator 2018-12-03T14:20:20Z

It was pretty hard to figure out what to do in this game, I was initially just walking left and right without any idea of how I was supposed to collect the animals. I actually looked in the source code to find out that there is a grab button. The arms in the grab and run animation actually look really similar so I didn't realize I was doing anything at first when I was just mashing buttons to see if anything would happen. (you could still add the controls to the description on this page to make it easier for others)

Other than that, the art and music are pretty cute!
