LD38 — A Small World

For The Love Of Money by KunoNoOni 2017-05-04T23:45:14Z

I liked it very much! I had a goal and obstacles to that goal and I felt like a badass every time I made it through, on the last minute, missing a fireball by a few pixels! It felt fair and old school. Kudos KunoNoOni!!

ATLANTIS by OccultOne 2017-05-02T11:50:57Z

Excellent work! I really enjoyed my 3 games with it, so far. I will echo the UI concerns, it was good for a prototype, but going forward you might need to make it more intuitive. Off the top of my head, better feedback and less menus to click through? Context-sensitive menus is what I'm thinking off. A scout clicking on something can get a move or interact option. Unless it's a building, in which case only interact or something.

Fantastic overall. Also huge thanks @occultone for the heads up on how bad my game lags, I fixed it thanks to you <3

Snoozle Pooz by mathijs750 2017-05-04T09:24:56Z

so cute and relaxing! thank you <3

It's A Small World by danman9914 2017-05-04T09:20:15Z

Adorable <3 Great job, I won't spoil the ending!

Pixel Town by automatonvx 2017-05-02T12:25:12Z

Yayy! Very sim-city! I finished both scenarios and had fun! It does seem to need some balancing, have you tried Joris Dormans' "Machinations" tool? It's great for prototyping the economics of games like this.

Great job

Godly Corp. by Zeriver 2017-05-04T09:36:40Z

Haha, lovely. I liked that I had something to do with my left hand. I also loved that cthulhu is employee of the month

Fossil Blastr by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2017-05-02T11:37:10Z

Everyone, thanks so much for playing.

@occultone thank you for bringing this to my attention. It's actually made in Construct 2, but what you said still applies. if you're curious, it was a While loop, that tried random positions to find an empty tile to bombard with a falling rock. The less empty spaces there were, the harder it had to think, therefore introducing a ton of lag. I fixed it by coding it properly ^-^ (copying all empty space coordinates in a temp array and then randomly selecting a pair of X,Y coordinates from there, which is always foolproof and has the minimum overhead) Thanks again <3

@Vivoubos thank you! I know, it's not that great yet. I hope it gets there :D

@Mieeh I agree. That's all the time I had, but that's no excuse. Thanks for playing!

@kavehes I was about to introduce some powerups and gold drops, so the levels wouldn't be boring even if you're not finding fossils, but ran out of time. Thank you all the same <3

@automatonvx thank you so much for the suggestions which are totally valid btw <3

Hexoworld 9999 by Lugdumdare Team 2017-05-04T09:16:17Z

Loved the mechanic and the strategic depth it provides. I had fun playing it and felt so invested that I was shouting "shit shit shit" a lot when I was about to be hit by a meteor. Good job! Top marks

ARR World by Simon Rahnasto 2017-05-02T21:12:34Z

Super cool!!! And in such a short amount of time. Lovely graphics, very sid-meier's pirates! Love the management aspect of it! Top marks!!

LD39 — Running out of Power

Frankenstorm by TerraCottaFrog 2017-08-07T14:21:29Z

I had a lot of fun! I wish the official ghostbusters games back in the day were as much fun.

The risk/reward mechanic of collecting when you're not shooting was genius! It was also amazing to have only one action button. And so many levels, and boss fights! Wow.

Very very well-done!

Azrellian Asteroid Field by KunoNoOni 2017-08-07T05:30:08Z

Excellent avoid-em-up! Loved the lenient hurtbox, thank you! It's very much a game I'd be obsessed with back in the DOS days! I made it here on my second playthrough:

[Clipboard04.png](///raw/6e9/2/z/8be3.png)

I think that's about the point where I ran out of energy both times actually. Maybe there could be more energy spawns the further up you go? With possibly some more asteroids to balance it? It felt a little linear after a point.

In any case, great job!

Tax Rebel by LeReveur 2017-08-07T13:55:48Z

Yes pathfinding worked great! I was burned to robotic ashes a LOT, but managed to get back to base after charging. Kudos for making it in such a short time!

Power the House by wowods 2017-08-07T12:01:43Z

A great little puzzle, congrats for your entry!

E.M.P. by TheMadStrauss 2017-08-05T13:19:14Z

Likes: - graphics - small pixelart really excites the imagination - mood + music - claustrophobic and creepy, kept me on my tows throughout - writing - was excellent! - puzzle design - great! I love adventure games, and this was a good one!

Dislikes: - the limited energy felt a little bit tacked-on and not really necessary

A great entry, one of the best I've played! Full marks from me!

AstroMouse by SkullPixel 2017-08-07T19:35:49Z

Wheee 30th rating! Congrats on this little gem <333

MOTHER by Kakureta 2017-08-04T05:09:24Z

Very interesting and risky game design, I loved it! Only thing that broke my flow was the 10 seconds recharge time, I felt it was a bit much?

Very cool concept, and nicely done for the time limit!!

Ads will tell our Story for us by Nicso 2017-08-07T05:05:49Z

Very nice controls! I liked to dash *and* fly. Platforming was very nice, obstacles became increasingly hard, which was a nice touch!

Only tiny complaint: on the way back, the camera doesn't scroll down so you can see the platforms, and it becomes a leap of faith. I died a ton of times.

I wouldn't have minded that much, but I had to redo all the last part, because there wasn't a checkpoint on the top!

Other than that, lovely, lovely entry, and I'm still humming the music

Galvanica by icxon 2017-08-04T10:22:26Z

what I liked

- very FTL, only somehow *more* engaging - very funny - very polished! - excellent idea and hard choices, felt very alive - the pop references :D - the asteroid navigation minigame was superb! I really felt like navigating the field!

what I didn't like - !

The Fallen by CliffracerX 2017-08-07T10:51:11Z

Very very nicely done! I'd like some slightly more simplified controls. I love love love building games *and* defense games, and this scratched both my itches, thank you! <3 You should be super proud for finishing before the 24 hours!

Fade by glimaleite 2017-08-04T11:12:50Z

Great atmosphere, hard gameplay, thank you for recommending this! <3 Congrats on a great entry!

Ardis Mobile Mission by Franklins Ghost 2017-08-07T14:38:33Z

This was a beautiful idea with a gorgeous execution!!!!! Great approach to the theme, lots of tension, and incredible illustrations, all in such a short time. Kudos!

My Dream by Local Minimum 2017-08-07T05:13:25Z

Oh wow. Unique and strange is an understatement <3 I loved loved loved how much technical stuff made it into this, fantastic use of twine! And the storytelling was very cinematic. The battery charger was a great touch. The cycling ~~buttons~~, ~~text~~, soulful descriptions are so very impactful <3

Thank you for this, top marks!

Power Plant Simulator. by BroRawr 2017-08-04T05:29:22Z

ha! That was great!! My only nitpick: I'd have liked the 3 indicator bars to always be present on the UI, instead of me having to go and look at them. Sure, it added some tension, but the game was really fun and tense without it anyway.

Lovely job :D

Be Queen Bee by LucasMolina 2017-08-12T12:00:44Z

So fun!!! So pretty!! You should be proud, all <3

On/Off by ThePelranthean 2017-08-05T18:08:48Z

OK that was a great puzzle. I bet you could even make it in 2D and it would still be pretty awesome (and faster to prototype?)

I have the same problem with the wall clipping, it limits your visibility and is a bit frustrating.

However the mechanic is excellent, and I'd really really like to see a full game out of it, exploiting all the on/off possibilities of the world.

Kudos!

Drone Supervisor by Jimbly 2017-08-07T14:57:41Z

This was so much like leapday, but also 10 times more impressive, because I was working for spryfox at the time and I remember how much work it was to implement! Congratulations, it's super fun <3

Poke Mongo by ghust1995 2017-08-07T12:32:58Z

It was funny and frustrating! Especially the dead battery part!

Thunder by Samuli 2017-08-03T20:18:25Z

Liked:

- the quake feel - the particles and fx <3 - the superjump mechanic - the graphics - the action!

didn't quite like

- that I kept falling out of platforms, grrr

thanks for making this :D

The Road To Power by tinykidtoo 2017-08-07T12:07:29Z

I got most of the endings, I'm so happy with this one! How long did it take you, it's pretty impressive!

Last survivor by Hadik 2017-08-04T10:53:24Z

Didn't like: - the character speed was a little too slow for me - it was hard to find food

Liked: - everything else! - it was well-designed - the graphics set the mood beautifully - congratulations on finishing within 48 hours!!

Recapitate by superpokeunicorn 2017-08-10T11:40:17Z

what an excellent game! Super original, the risk/reward mechanic reminded me a bit of that arcade old shmup Dragon Blaze.

I second the bat hitbox problem, but everything else was top-shelf! You should be proud!!

Robo Power by jahndis 2017-08-04T05:00:02Z

really loved the mayor's crappy attitude :D :D :D :D Would have liked a speedup button, even lemmings added one eventually :P Great puzzle though, I love programming robots, I wish it was as easy in real life...

⚡ Swing Bolt ⚡ by AJ Weeks 2017-08-04T04:42:35Z

haha that was an excellent arena game! and the use of wolfram tunes was spot on. Graphics were so so cute, and seriously polished, you know your stuff! Had a lot of fun for about 3 games. After that I kept wanting a reason to play, some goal, some variety, a penalty to mix things up? Lovely work, and multiplayer would suuure be nice

Energy Outage by rosypenguin 2017-08-06T20:58:50Z

So adorable!!!! Got all 3 endings (lovely). Loved the C64/ Speccy vibe. Love that you budgeted your time precisely and managed to finish it under those conditions! Lots of lessons for a rash gamedev like me <3

Top marks from me <33333

ld39 by daniel 2017-08-03T20:28:19Z

liked: - Lovely fight - Lovely character design and animations! - enemy patterns as dots on the floor!! Lovely - the difficulty was good!

didn't like: - when I died, I had to restart the application

The Music Box by DDRKirbyISQ 2017-08-07T14:30:06Z

Excellent graphics, super polished, great music, and so much excellent writing! When did you have time!!! <3 Wow

The end of heat by Alexandre Szybiak 2017-08-14T12:16:54Z

whaat, this was great! I felt compelled to read everything, such a great way to tell a story. The music was great too, and extra marks for mood and waterbears <333

Lead by pvtroswold 2017-08-07T11:28:00Z

Making something in 48 hours is super hard and you should be super proud! I killed all the cuties with electrification :D

Also, loved the post-compo <33

Blood Mechs: The Iron Eucharist by nuclearfriend 2017-08-06T11:58:31Z

THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a rare thing for an LD entry to inspire a catchy catchphrase! <3

likes - unbelievable presentation and polish. definitely prettier than any mechwarrior - great gameplay!! - a ton of content - incredible voice work and sfx - incredible music

try differently: - maybe a tiiiny bit faster mech movement? I know if you had time there'd be upgrades and stuff, so no big. - make the gameplay a bit harder ( I had absolutely no problem with the controls, but then, I'm a mechwarrior veteran and actually love tons of shortcuts for mech control)

Running the Marathon by gamepopper 2017-08-07T12:23:36Z

This was great! I lost my nerve at 1965 meters, but I loved how well-implemented the risk/reward mechanic was. I was able to recover from severe lack of power, and then reach 60km/h before I ran out. Very impressive! I also liked the airplane sounds, I'd love more distractions. The mood was great, you used the limited palette excellently! kudos!

LOW BATT by simonhutchinson 2017-08-07T11:20:03Z

omg what an emotional journey!!! I enjoyed every second of it, amazing timing, amazing mood, super responsive, great narrative with beginning, climax and end. You're making me reconsider game design <3 Top marks!

Sip Sip Universe by sugarbyte 2017-08-05T17:34:57Z

Super charming idea <3 I wanted some more speed in the player movement when she's on the planet. Her spaceship moved at a fine speed!

Kudos for female progatonist, very rare. Kudos for procedurally generating the planets, I know that must have taken a lot of effort!

Finally, I love that you can see user created content on the shelves!!

Congratulations for making this

Quad and Cycl by ijzm 2017-08-06T22:04:55Z

Lots of levels, you got a ton of work done, congratulations! The robots are super cute too! A few bugs related to collisions (I got stuck on the side of platforms a few times).

I can see where you wanted to implement the mechanic, and I can see it would be an even more fun game if you did!

Congrats again :)

Plasma Arena by red-fan-games 2017-08-07T05:34:54Z

Lovely old-school difficulty shooter! Amazing technical work for just a weekend, too! Kudos!

Cranked 1911 by zee 2017-08-06T12:24:07Z

Ha!!! That was great!!!

Likes: - so much gameplay implemented in so little time!! - control of the car, I've missed left/right steering - a ton of atmosphere <3 - cool music!

do differently: - speed while on foot. argh, i got run over so many times!! Got vindicated though whenever I trashed their cars with my model T

Space Dog by Thygrrr 2017-08-04T10:10:22Z

SO adorable! Thank you so much for making it. I've sunk a good hour into it and it's still entertaining. The ship's voice is a great touch. Full marks from me!

ZapDune by diptoman 2017-08-07T05:43:20Z

Good job!!! Excellent pacing and very challenging. Very well-thought game design! Great music as well!

The hook was kind of buggy sometimes, it sent me flying outside the level. I'd have liked a way to be safe instead of dying when you fall outside the level.

kudos all around!

Defend Home: Mars by sgt3v 2017-08-04T03:28:45Z

very very impressive! Some more "juiciness" might be needed, as others said (feedback of when you're hitting the ants".

But otherwise it's super pretty and fun! I can't imagine how much headscratching it would have taken to code a 3D game!! congrats

Fast Refuel by harusame 2017-08-04T10:58:02Z

Very very cool! It felt a little like lost vikings! I loved the 3 ship switch mechanic, and the recharge ship! I also like that it's an endless shmup.

Graphics were nice, it felt very polished! Congratulations on your entry!!!

Rocket Rescue by automatonvx 2017-08-05T15:06:00Z

I actually liked the controls, very floaty and space like. I love old-school challenges in games. I died a lot, especially whenever I had to fly above spikes, but equally, I felt very accomplished whenever I beat them :D Congrats on your game!!

Ministry of Synthesis by impbox 2017-08-07T06:30:16Z

The graphics were excellent, the platforming super solid and the controls never ever got in the way of what I wanted to do. How did you even have time to implement all this <3 The modular synth is what shines of course, this is a brilliant idea, with a brilliant execution! <3

Breathless Parks - Running, out of Power by gonutz 2017-08-07T18:53:23Z

I beat it!! So funny *and* fun. The visuals are extra nice, I can't believe you had time for all that during the compo, wow <3

Durst by Pikas96 2017-08-07T15:49:58Z

Ha! I remember flatnet! And I loved this one as well :D Cool graphics, very original combat!!

Devil's Curse by herniewise 2017-08-04T03:39:47Z

OK, this was excellent!! Super fun, lovely NES graphics, heart-pounding music, the gameplay idea *and* execution is great!

I second @mortus' suggestion of adding back random abilities. It would be very Downwell, and add expectation for the next waves, and the joy of discovery.

All in all, amazing entry, can't wait to see your ratings <3

Squanchy Squids by pjnovas 2017-08-07T13:37:40Z

This was very hard but super fun!!! The physics were great! I'm glad you finished it!

Running on the Power of Love by nervous-composers 2017-08-07T11:53:14Z

n'aww that was so sweet :)) Way to go

Powercharge by Ferminho 2017-08-07T13:47:58Z

Very inventive, loved the game and watch style!!

Terminal Attraction by Aumbra 2017-08-04T04:37:28Z

Hey y'all made ant detective <3 Lovely to see this entry.

I'll start with my one nitpick. As a trans woman I'm probably too sensitive to this and/or overthinking it, but the "deranged person who wants to transform into something unnatural" gave me uncomfortable feelings. A lot like the villain in Silence of the Lambs (which was a very recognizably transphobic and misogynistic piece of writing). I'm sure it wasn't intentional, though?

However! Everything else *sparkles*. The writing is fun and funny and stayed clear of sexism for the most part (poor french guy, getting sensitive about size). The plot twist at the end was brilliant, I was like, I *trusted you* Terry, how could my detective be such a bad judge of character!!

The music was great and moody. Oh, I might have liked the characters to do a little jump animation or something, in addition to the brilliant facial expressions, when it's their turn to say their line. Sometimes I had to keep track of who was talking.

All in all an excellent entry, thank you for making this <3

How I Met Your Great Great Grandmother by PeachTreeOath 2017-08-07T05:54:16Z

Ok, wow. The game design was excellent!!! Very good pacing, very cute premise, the music was great. The gatekeeping kept me on my toes and it got complicated (and clever) really fast <3 I loved it!

I'd have liked for the woman to age as well ^-^ Right now it feels like she does nothing with her life until he gets all his goals. But I get that it's a metaphor :D

Breaker Breaker! by FlyingMeta 2017-08-05T17:25:48Z

Absolutely lovely! Old-school difficulty! I played again and again, can't seem to put it down <3 The repair mechanic was very cool, juggling priorities! Thanks for making this, great entry!

The Sorcerer's Apprentice by donvermo 2017-08-04T11:02:49Z

super cute graphics, super charming! I loved the tower climbing, I would have loved to see the mana/gem mechanic! You made the right call to finish the game! Congrats

Plug and Play by ehgoodenough 2017-08-04T16:52:50Z

very very cool! :D I love the fact you need to juggle two things at once. Excellent interpretation of the theme as well! kudos!!!

Power Run by Strega 2017-08-14T12:47:04Z

Clipboard01.png

Like your previous game, 6-sided Sojourn, this was absolutely excellent! The crumbling platform gave me a sense of urgency and the appearing platform was a fantastic way of introducing uncertainty and randomness to the path. The maze code must have taken a lot of thought!!

Gameplay was excellent, music was nicely incidental, a super enjoyable game, you should be proud (I'm still playing)

Sorceress by j-nat 2017-08-07T04:40:27Z

Very relaxing flight controls :D And I love the post-compo rainbow <3 Bonus points for female protagonist yayy

Bead on the moon by Hishicorne 2017-08-07T04:49:40Z

Got 4 of the 5 endings so far! So CLAMP, so cute! The idea of fighting monsters with tastes they don't like is so, so brilliant. I don't think I've ever seen it in a game, ever.

Also amazing how you managed to code (and write) so much story exposition.

Congrats, a great entry!

Wodewick, the grumpy monster by winniehell 2017-08-14T12:11:26Z

Super cute!! I loved both music tracks, loved the graphics, loved the non-violent idea (naww ungrumpy monster) and loved loved loved the gameplay! The energy meter was very well implemented, it made me choose my movements, and nevel felt unfair!

Here's my best score so far:

Clipboard01.png

Keep Your Coal, Dude by DragonZlay 2017-08-06T21:18:57Z

do differently: - jumping was a bit unresponsive/ weird.

liked: - the incremental game design! That was excellent, making things harder as you master more and more obstacles - the obstacles themselves.

good job!

solar avenue by wareification 2017-08-04T03:46:32Z

Only critique is what @obidubi said about sliding along the bondary. It felt unresponsive and it broke my flow, in an otherwise *very* fun racer. I loved having to get the solar powerups in order to win. Also some landmarks to help me memorize where I am at each given lap.

All in all, lovely work, especially with the time constraint

Fuse Cell by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2017-08-07T18:04:41Z

Thanks everyone for the comments, I really appreciate your playtests and your feedback!

@automatonvx Thank you. You're absolutely right, I had no time to design a ship that would display a proper collision box. The collision box is there, it's 1x1px like it's supposed to be in bullet hell games, and it's one red pixel on the ship sprite. But it doesn't work at all, I need to find a way around it and that may mean redesigning the ship.

@flyingmeta thank you. One-hit death is customary in bullet hells. For balance, however, bullet hell game design *always* makes sure you died fair and square. Since I haven't made the hurtbox absolutely clear, I'm guilty of not doing it right. I'll do better!

@herniewise Oh yes, hi! Whee <3 Thank you so much.

@sugarbyte thank you kindly <3

@johngun Nice of you to say! I stayed in the design phase a long time, to ensure it's good fun. Fun gameplay isn't my strong suit usually, so I'm glad I rose above this time.

@thepelranthean you're absolutely right about the hurtbox. I'll find a way to make it work. Thank you for the kind words. It tries to not be unfair, even though it's tough, I think you can finish it.

@thygrrr Me, me me! *I* know that bullets need to be fast and big! <3 I'm glad you know too! You're absolutely right about AZERTY and QWERTZ keyboards, I'm always so disappointed when I don't have time to implement proper controls for you :/ Regarding the hurtbox, yes it's on the to-fix list. Thank you for the feedback and thanks for playing!

@glimaleite I'm glad you had fun! I am considering making a full set of levels yes. You're absolutely right to point out my bad hurtbox implementation. It's 1x1 pixels, and it's not readily visible on the ship sprite. Maybe if I animate the ship rotating it will be beter, but if it doesn't, I'll have to go for a redesign. Thank you so much <3

@pjchardthesecond thank you very much. It's true, my hurtbox is bad (even though it's just 1 pixel) and it does make deaths cheap sometimes. The absorption mechanic has a cooldown, you can't do it twice in a row, and you can't do it if the enemy is outside your sphere of influence (i.e. when there aren't lightning bolts connecting you to it)

@duzzondrums thank you so much for playing and for the kind words.

@zee Thank you. You're right, my hurtbox is 1px, and it may be both too small and not clear enough where it is. It's on the to-fix list! Thanks for playing!

@arden thank you :)

@rosypenguin Thank you so much for playing. And thanks for noticing! The crosshair was so cheaply done, because I had no time to spare, it's simply baked on frame 2 of that balloon, of its 2-frame animation. One frame with, one without a crosshair. ^-^ I am continuing work on it yes, I might release a proper version in a few months. Thanks for the vote of confidence!

@dragonzlay Thank you so much for the kind words. I might!

@random-storykeeper I'm so sorry :/ I have no idea why. I re-uploaded in case it helps, you can retry if you like.

@sebastian-m thank you very much. The hitbox is very bad indeed, thank you for the heads up, I'll find a way to fix it.

@gendou-kun Thank you. Of course, with pleasure!

@godot35 Thank you so much. Thank you for pointing out the hurtbox problem, it's absolutely badly designed and I'm getting it fixed.

@j-nat Thank you for the heads up on the hurbox and the gauge. I'll try to find a better solution for both. Would perhaps a pie chart gauge around the ship look less intrusive?

@hishicorne Thank you so much for playing and for the kind words.

@nisco: thank you, and agreed! It's getting fixed.

@local-minimum Thank you so much for the feedback! You're right, I will totally try to give more info on-screen. Thanks for playing!

@daniel Thank you so much. Absolutely agree on the hurtbox

@kunonooni Thank you so much for the high praise <3 Thanks for playing

@peachtreeoath thank you! I was afraid it would be gimmicky too, but I sat down and refined it. I think I might have held back a little myself, people are finding it too easy :D

Fuse Cell by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2017-08-07T18:16:41Z

@impbox Thanks so much. Yes I was definitely out of time for polished graphics ^-^ They're all outlined, but some outlines are better shaded. I will try a randomized target, based on how many ships you pull in, thank you for the suggestion! It should be enough to throw you off balance, but still be a learnable skill if you want to do a perfect run.

@random-storykeeper oh I'm so glad! The boss' metal cannon balls are actually absorbable, so you can recharge on those! Thank you for the kind words.

@asofi: thank you!

@harusame Thank you so much, I'm very very glad you enjoyed it <3

@belowparallel-ian thank you so much, I did my best!

@verysoftwares Yes that's right, my non-fun dungeon crawler! Thanks for remembering and thanks for playing. I'll probably make more of this.

@a333 Thank you so much. I hadn't played Talespin for the NES, but i watched the show and I've played both ducktales games from that era, so maybe something stuck? You're absolutely right about the hurtbox and I'm on it. <3 I'll probably make more of this game.

@cliffracerx Thank you so much! I agree, the mega bomb doesn't feel that powerful, and actually isn't THAT powerful. I need to fix that, thanks again.

@deadlyAlive thank you <3

@simonhutchinson thank you so much

@nokusu Agreed on the negative stuff. I'll see how I can make it more accessible. Thank you in any case, for the kind words.

@pvtroswold thank you so much. I tried to think it through on paper before attacking it with code ^-^ I'm very very happy you noticed.

@prodigalson Thank you so much. In order to snatch enemies you have to 1. be inside the sphere of influence (i.e. lightning bolts have to be connecting you to an enemy) and 2. wait for its cooldown period to end.

@oparisy thank you so much for the kind words.

@sinclairstrange: thank you so much <3

Fuse Cell by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2017-08-07T18:42:48Z

@jusw85 Thank you so much. You *do* charge even when you miss the target bar, you just don't charge quite as much. It's a non-zero amount though. Is your intuition telling you it would be better if that amount was larger?

@wowods Thank you, I will try!

@pablodap Thank you! Yes of course! I added the conditions in the instructions

@ledez Thank you so much for playing and for the kind words

@peter-sheehan Thank you. I will need to fix the hitbox but I'm glad you didn't find it unfair. What sort of animation did you have in mind? I'll totally add one if you tell me.

@lereveur thank you so much. The hitbox is a bit too small ^-^' I'll fix that

@yawoada thank you so much. I will try to develop more <3

@willdata thank you! If I tied health with charge then it wouldn't be a bullet hell. They typically have one-hit death, but make up for it by giving you the tools to rise above it. Maybe my game wasn't fair enough for you, I'll try to do better.

@terracottafrog thank you, that's high praise! I'll probably make later levels a lot tougher, and adjust the difficulty of the first level too. Thank you <3

@ddrkirbyisq Thank you so much. I added your notes to the explanation. You're right about the hurtbox, it's the reddish pixel in the middle, but I need to do better.

@nbitsstudio thank you!

@franklins-ghost thank you so much. Hm stopped shooting, eh? I'll look into it! Thank you!! Probably a bug

@nikrt thank you so much

@zenmumbler thank you very much

@theonethanneverwas thank you, it's high praise coming from you <3

@jimbly thank you so much. You're right about the hurtbox it's being taken care of! Charging releases a blast if you do two MAX charges, ie if you're fully charged AND manage to hit another perfect recharge gauge. Thank you!!

@hadik thank you! I'm a woman tho. Thanks so much for playing!

Gradient Descent by Zelos 2017-08-07T19:07:48Z

Absolutely beautiful, the mood, the music, the visuals, the lulling undulating movements. I loved the exploration-based controls and gameplay!! I loved the experience which was more than the sum of its parts, all of the parts being excellent. Thank you for making this, I can see why it's recommended <3

PowerBot by Caffeinated Psychics 2017-08-04T03:59:26Z

The music was lovely! The designs were very DOS-era shareware, which is a good thing in my book! Level design was fine, and I got into it easily. I also finished it on my second try :D I hate those flying drones :(

Good job, team!

LD39 Compo: Trindle Armored Defense by vkmicro 2017-08-08T21:40:07Z

Clipboard01.png

Good one! Two things felt a little overpowered:

1. getting the tank back to base instantly gives you 10/10 durability. There could be a charging mechanic over time. Instantly is too fast for me.

2. the energy pulse from the base. I managed to finish the game quite easily because of it. I like to feel powerful in a game, but I felt a little *too* powerful this time. That made me feel a little bored towards the end.

Still, great entry!!

Oh and a small trick I sometimes use with sound effects: if I'm going to have a lot of explosions or bullets, I first stop all sounds and *then* play the latest one, so that two similar sounds don't play at the same time. You might want to do that, or not.

Congrats on your 2nd LD!

n'aww poor robots. Cool game, I love arena shooters, lovely what you managed to do in such a short time!

THIRST by Togis 2017-08-04T05:45:45Z

I too love Carcassone *and* desktop dungeons, and this gave me vibes of both. Fantastic roguelike, I'm astounded you managed to polish *and* code *and* design it in that amount of time. Excellent work, full marks from me!

Escape! by Damoy 2017-08-04T05:34:46Z

graphics were a bit simple, but gameplay was not! <3 I loved how strategic it was. Also didn't get past level 8, but had a lot of fun doing it!!

Artifact Dive by AdroitConceptions 2017-08-09T16:12:13Z

Finished on my second run! It reminded me of the dungeons from Recettear, i.e. it was a fun experience! The only thing I'd like added is some chance of getting back your health and/or upgrading your weapon (three-way bullet or just simply a larger stronger single bullet). Maybe enemies could leave powerups?

Excellent compo game though, thank you!

Temple of Illumination by Johngun 2017-08-05T17:48:18Z

Likes:

- Incredible mood - Lovely tiles - Great tension, the portal power timer was a good call! - Great platforming - Fantastic level design - The music is phenomenal - Named levels! I love those! - The orbs following you until you get to the portal were a fantastic touch

Only dislike:

- you can't cling to the wall if you're falling. You have to start a wall cling with a jump, and that's very counter intuitive (and hard) when you're going down. It kept me on the "Wall Skills 2" level for quite some time

All in all, fantastic game, very very fun

Woundlings by DavidByers 2017-08-03T20:46:05Z

ok those wind up dinos are adorable!!!! The AI was fine!

I would have liked an easier point and click control scheme and automatic commands, like other strategy games. But I would still like to have direct control of the dinosaurs, optionally.

Great entry! Thank you for making this

Flashlight by BelowParallel_Ian 2017-08-04T03:34:01Z

Neat! I would expect the flashlight to have a fixed range. Because right now, you can just click at the far right of the screen and see all monsters, and *still* use the same energy as if you clicked near the player.

I loved that I had to play in the dark, the risk/reward of the flashlight reminded me of 5 nights at Freddy's actually. good job!

Roboy Awakening by Arden 2017-08-06T20:51:07Z

Loved all the metroidvania elements! How did you find time to code all that!!! <3 Such a polished game for a Jam!

Ted Crashed! by Sebastian-M 2017-08-06T22:20:13Z

This was beautiful!! How beautiful were those tiles, wow. The way you implemented fog of war with appearing hex tiles was phenomenal! As was the music I also loved how free I was to build energy nodes.

Only tiny tiny complaint, when I played for more than 10 minutes, it started to lag. Is there maybe something in your code that eats up memory?

All in all, lovely, lovely game, and a phenomenal first LD entry

uRUNium by yopox 2017-08-14T12:06:02Z

Whaaat! This is an excellent entry, you should be proud! Music, mood, level design and gameplay were top notch! <3 The graphics were pretty too. I can't believe you had time to make these levels *and* playtest them *and* make an overworld level selection <3

The unlock mechanic was very fair and very motivating as well! <3 Kudos!

Depths of Oceania by cnoble 2017-08-07T20:57:01Z

Wow, how did you ever have time to fit all this in 24 hours.. The graphics were great, the mood was amazing, I loved having to juggle the gauges as I went down, lots of tense gameplay. And the shark, wow.

I hope you're very proud of your entry!!!! Top marks from me!

TRIAL OF THE 3 SUNS by Godot35 2017-08-06T22:25:59Z

Old school difficulty, with a very fresh idea!! The DDR style shooting was a great touch!! Kudos for a very original idea!!

#relicsofpast by Eremiell 2017-08-10T20:48:35Z

I died on level 11 twice. I hate that big jump haha.

The music was lovely, and the light mechanic seems super promising! Like, for example, if there's enemies that are paralyzed by the light, but you can only hold the light on for a little while.

Good entry! And since you asked for a linux64 version of my game, here:

The Leech by Peter Sheehan 2017-08-07T13:48:58Z

some very stylish and bold art choices! Way to go! I wanted my jumps to be less floaty, but very good job!

Lifeforce Deathrun by GanbareGamesKyle 2017-08-09T15:23:12Z

Super excellent! I got vibes of ikaruga, but cuter :D It's so hard to design a good one-button game, and you totally nailed it! The art was spot on, fresh and energetic, reminding me of roller derby and scenesters.

Kudos!!!!!

Light It Up by yawoada 2017-08-07T14:00:59Z

oh hey fellow construct user!

Had a lot of fun with this! I got into the groove of killing blue squares by jumping on each one consecutively without touching the floor, it was pretty fun!

One thing I'd like implemented is a dedicated jump key, like Z or something. It's easily done with events like so: "when Z pressed" -> player.platform.simulate jump

Congrats on your first LD!

LED Adventure -- Running out of Power by ledez 2017-08-07T12:27:25Z

Great graphics and platforming! How did you manage in so little time. Reminded me of Pacman World

Electric Castle by Mr Marcgenesis 2017-08-04T05:17:00Z

ok this is *lovely*! Very very fun, in an old-school difficulty way which I love. I appreciated the DOS shareware era graphics. The levels were where you shine! Level design was amazing. Have you perhaps spent hours and hours in mario maker? :D

Level titles were a *very* nice touch too, not many games do that nowadays! All in all, a great entry (I now officially hate ceiling spikes :D )

The Color of Days To Come. by TheOneThatNeverWas 2017-08-07T14:53:20Z

Dorgus Needs Power! by WillData 2017-08-07T14:14:03Z

Congrats, this is a solid entry!

KOCMOHaBT Spaceman by PjchardtTheSecond 2017-08-05T18:23:35Z

Likes: - Amazing art, amazing mood, amazing writing. Very contemplative game! - very funny in delicate ways. sardonic even - great voice acting

Dislikes: - A bug: On my first playthrough I got stuck because my checkpoint (4th satelite) placed me on a collision course with the nearby planet. I kept crashing, so I had to restart. However I persevered, and it was so super worth it.

Thank you for making it, full marks from me!

Loved it! I can't resist a building simulator <3 However once I got 3 geothermal stations, it became too easy. I just made sure I have enough accumulators, and then the money kept coming, I had no problem filling the place up with wind turbines (upgraded too!)

So I guess some sort of random catastrophic event or a source of constant "friction" in the system is needed? Something like, the more generators you build the more they cost? Or they break down at some point?

In any case, great work!! :D

Soul Gun by EX3 2017-08-04T04:49:39Z

what we call old-school difficulty!! I *hate* the purple things that shoot at me, I really do! :D

Loved the graphics, got a very ZX Spectrum feel. *loved* the level design, despite too few and far between checkpoints. Frustration is part of why I like old-school games.

Lovely lovely entry, thank you!

Hi fellow C2 users! Such a great entry!! The theme was on point!!

F.O.U.R. by Ava Skoog 2018-12-11T22:40:06Z

omg I scored it 5/5 on everything, because it's great. Thank you so much for the map, it was the only thing I was *kinda* (but not seriously) missing.

things I loved: - the calm pace! I was actually reading an essay on ["cozy games" by Dan C of Lost garden](http://www.lostgarden.com/2018/01/cozy-games.html) . This hit all the right spots! - the sliiiightly oblique perspective, to show you're in a 3D world, but also arrow directions work 100% intuitively - the lovely graphics and happy/ unsettling music - that you play a woman, and she's a woman of color - that I had a clear goal - that I managed to beat it!

I hope you're proud Ava! <3

Diortem by Ilseroth 2018-12-06T17:44:36Z

Puzzle Kids by jsmars 2018-12-06T17:39:58Z

The Saver by dunin 2018-12-06T17:30:12Z

That's neat!! I loved the sacrifices you have to make, they feel very on-theme. Congrats!

Serpent's Souls by impbox 2018-12-06T16:59:39Z

Very deep! @impbox , have you by any chance read Keith Burgun's articles/ books? I see so much coherent game design on your part all the time, it would make sense. Or you're just a talent, that works too. In any case, top marks, and thank you so much for spotting my publishing mistake

Serpent's Souls by impbox 2018-12-08T09:12:06Z

@impbox I'm totally checking that game out. I don't know if you messed it up, you know how ludum dare forces you to do everything at once. I too think it's a little unbalanced but the core is very very sound

Contagion by mrnyarlathotep 2018-12-06T03:01:18Z

I love that you used LD as an opportunity to make an engine out of your comfort zone! Lovely game, I had fun exploring! One question: if health goes above 100%, why do you need the "food remaining" indicator? I basically ate all the food I had until it became 0. Great job overall, and loved the graphics :)

Verto by Gordy 2018-12-07T00:49:22Z

don't worry about not being able to finish! The idea is very ambitious and you did very well!

Ludum Dare: The Game by pantoufle 2018-12-06T17:11:23Z

This was awesome!!! My ratings were too good at the end, but I really really enjoyed it. It completely captures what it's like, especially in the final minutes. Very very good job, top marks!

Saving Oskar by markusfisch 2018-12-06T23:30:49Z

I hate those other lamb owners, wtf, let me kill your sheep in peace :/ I played long enough to win though, take that! Lovely in its simplicity, well done!

Mary had some lamb to spare by 100th_Coin 2018-12-05T02:57:59Z

STAR JUNK by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2018-12-04T19:21:02Z

@impbox oh wow, thanks for catching that! I published it as Restricted on itch.io so it played fine for me, and I couldn't see the problem. I hope I fixed it now <3

STAR JUNK by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2018-12-04T20:54:06Z

@eldogg yes, that was the one thing that made all that AI worth it. The pathfinding is simple as can be, but it gets the job done! Thank you so much for playing and for the kind words

STAR JUNK by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2018-12-08T09:44:30Z

@impbox thank you for the feedback! I'm sad I messed up the collectibles so much :/ The thing that pops up when you kill an enemy is *her* portrait not yours. I probably shouldn't make it appear bottom left, it's completely confusing. The chain reaction sounds good. I don't think the game is deep enough to support it, and it's not like I'll keep working on it. Thanks again <3

STAR JUNK by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2018-12-08T09:53:27Z

@kinuni thank you! I don't think it's deep enough to expand though

@adventureislands thank you <3 I'm finding out more and more that it's shallow gameplay :/ I thought I was making sacrifice a core mechanic, but it seems like I made a shootemup where you have a weird disadvantage

@ilseroth thank you. I think part of the problem is you don't see all the angles, just the 8 sprite directions of the ship. It actually turns smoothly, in 360 degrees, but snaps to the nearest. It's what solar winds and escape velocity do, so if those are tight controls and mine aren't, that's where I'm going wrong. Anyway it was tough enough to get 8 directions finished by the end of the jam, so I'm ok

@nelson-william aww thank you. I get why it's bad for some or most people

@arvejeitor thank you <3

@markusfisch Thank you! I'm glad you don't find it weird

@sodaraptor strafing and locking on would mean one more button, which I couldn't spare. Maybe autolock, but then what's the reason for having to maneuver. Maybe homing missiles, like the enemies have, but I couldn't fit them in the economy scheme. Thank you so much for the feedback! <3

@serwaastudio thank you very much

STAR JUNK by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2018-12-08T10:06:58Z

@wdelvi thank you! I seem to get better at finishing my ludum dare entries. Having a small idea and a concrete plan of attack works

@nkrim thanks so much

@choso thank you :)

@garris thank you! I think the main issue is you can't see the smooth rotation of the "actual" spaceship (hidden), because I only had time for 8 directions for the visible ship. :/

@ryan-brenner thank you <3 You can only buy 1Ups until you have 2 ships on top (that's 3 lives). The collision with the spaceport is on a small delay so you can have time to see that you've gone there. But I agree, it should probably be a tile that you can enter, and then it should ask you to press something before you enter the starbase.

@fusionnist thank you <3 cheers!

@f4kethis the enemy AI is super hacky... The intention was to first move and then shoot, but I set the logic to something like "if you see the player, shoot every 2 seconds", which means they start shooting the moment they see you. The controls are also suffering from only 8 visible directions for the ship, when the actual math underneath has smooth rotation. Oh well. game jams. I'm sorry for the frustration

@gordy yes there's not accurate feedback. the ship actually turns very smoothly, but the visible sprite only has 8 directions, so it turns every 45 degrees. That's what's wrong, I suspect. Thank you for the feedback!

@dunin Thank you! I think the rotation of the ship is what's giving you trouble, it's my bad

@jantaaa thank you! Turning the ship isn't easy, that's totally on me.

@dining-philosopher thank you! awww I'm sorry I misled you on level 3! I agree, the AI is hacky. I tried to make them follow you more aggressively, but they defaulted to patrolling too easily. So you can take them down one by one. Plus, their asteroid-avoiding code actually makes them gather to the top left quadrant after a while. It was really puzzling me until the last minute when I figured it out, and then I couldn't do anything about it! Oh well, I hope I get smarter by next LD <3

STAR JUNK by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2018-12-08T10:26:27Z

@pukami thank you. I don't know if there's enough game there to expand..

@kirke thank you so much ^-^ I spend about half my time on graphics. The latter half, so I could be sure the game played somewhat ok. Apparently gameplay missed the mark for a lot of people though

@devharts thank you! I'm glad the theme shines through for you! <3

@one-seed-fruit thank you so much ^-^ I'm not a master, that's for sure... However I have picked a few tricks in working during game jams. Like pick a super small idea, finish it by day one, and then have day 2 and 3 for playtesting and decoration ^-^

@julian-creutz thank you <3

@yopox oh wow you've seen my silly stuff before? <3 how humbling, thanks :)

@pantoufle thank you ^-^ glad you had fun instead of being frustrated by my mistakes

@toge thank you toge! I am sort of proud, though all i can see is the flaws now :)

@triplefox thank you for your feedback. I read some of your theories on coherency, and I agree on more than a few points. However I structured this on Keith Burgun's clockwork design pattern, so scenario to me is very secondary. If the game had a mayan sacrifice theme it would be coherent by your standards, but it wouldn't by mine. The only thing I wanted to do with the theme is create game rules out of. If I failed that too, and sacrificing your currency by shooting things isn't sacrifice, then I admit defeat :/

@awix thank you for your rating. I rated yours as well, you're very welcome

@maytch thank you! it's time I thought of azerty users

@zugai89 thank you! yeah they eat a lot of fish, what can I tell you.

@cyberstarlight thank you so much. I'm so glad you see the theme <33333

@morriss aww thanks for playing both of those <3

@twinghosts the 1up in the shop gives you the chance to prepare for the next level. The continue lets you sacrifice some money to keep playing (like in the arcades). I thought it felt unfair to just die without a continue, and you can't Insert Coin, so... :) Thank you for the kind words!

@pranjalbisht thank you! I need to play star control 2!!

@hechi thank you so so much <3

@kunonooni awww thanks for the words of support <333

@acaral thank you <3 I try!

@kovareka thank you!

@azayiah thank you for the kind words <3

STAR JUNK by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2018-12-08T22:34:57Z

@appix thank you <3

@hugonun and @cassio-eduardo thank you. The turn rate probably suffers from 8 directions, however the actual movement is 360 degrees. I only had time for 8 directions for the visible sprite though, so there it is. I can escape and shoot enemies fine, but it's my game and I don't see the problems. So thank you!

STAR JUNK by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2018-12-09T10:04:58Z

@marvalgames it's not nitpicking it's a valid question. I always make my LD games use Z and X, to save some time, but people using AZERTY keyboards (France and other countries) are always disappointed because Z and X are too far apart on their keyboards. So this time I thought I would let people redefine their keys. Redefining them every time you play is a pain, but I had no time for an options menu

Wow, so much work in 48 hours. Balancing is the main thing the game needs, but it's so hard to balance games during a game jam. You did *great* !

The Lamb by f4kethis 2018-12-06T17:33:13Z

This is lovely! I hated the enemies coming from behind, but liked the runner :) Good job

ok I expected the music to be great, but the graphics also shine! And controlling many player characters must have been hard. Very solid entry!! Top marks.

excellent work! the controls were a little weird at first, but I got the hang of it soon enough. The gameplay is great, and the isometric graphics must have been hard to figure out, so kudos!!The levels were very clever! Lovely entry!

Unicorn Rescue by devharts 2018-12-06T17:27:01Z

Absolutely adorable! It's always hard to have to work with an unknown engine but you seem to have made the most of it! I can't praise the bold and large sprites enough! Such a departure from "usual indie" graphics (tiny, dark and gritty). Excellent! I hope you keep jamming :D

The Happy Prince by Jisam 2018-12-06T02:54:52Z

A nice take on flappy bird/ underwater mario movement. The graphics are so cute! The controls could be refined a bit, I think gravity makes the [W] and [S] keys redundant. Good entry!

The card art is *amazing*. I'm mesmerized!! and you implemented a card system *and* a scripting language. I didn't miss the audio, I didn't miss more of a story, the story you have is top notch already. Also the core gameplay is impressive enough for me. Kudos and top marks, seriously. Such an elegant submission <3

Death Metal Crowd Pusher by WizardOfOzzy 2018-12-06T23:54:51Z

this is most excellent! I wonder, is the dominant strategy button mashing? I tried playing strategically, and got only slightly better results? Might be my bias though! I loved the one click gameplay, feels like a more honest and more interactive coin pusher.

Kudos!!!

King's Last Stand by Pukami 2018-12-05T01:41:41Z

such a lovely lovely art style <3 The game is fun as well, we jumped to almost the same game mechanic you and I. The only thing I'd like is a farther horizon so I can have the overall picture of what's happening, but I get this was a design decision. Overall very impressive!

Last Man In Space by izi 2018-12-05T02:11:04Z

ok this is great, I don't know how you had time to balance it, maybe you're amazing at math. Doesn't matter: my playtrhroughs are still enjoyable after 6 times. I love that you removed guesswork from choices: 1 random empath will die. Not "24% chance of empath dying".

Excellent, excellent entry. Top marks!

Slimy abilities by kinuni 2018-12-06T23:22:08Z

The wall hook didn't work for me, so I died a lot.. But I really think it's an amazing first jam game! There's level design and abilities, and Unity isn't easy. I'm very very impressed! If it was a bit easier to control I would definitely have finishd

Dovregubben by Ava Skoog 2019-05-04T16:02:43Z

So fun! And cute! I found myself wanting to slap the keyboard a lot, I was very into the game :D Also I think falling a large distance doesn't give you much of an advantage, since the troll spawns immediately on the same platform argh.

So it takes strategic planning to beat it, I had to plan my route. Very impressive Ava!! Well done!

Ok the art direction is *top notch*! Music, sfx and of course the visuals are fantastic. The camera angle was great too, which is an accomplishment! Also what a clever take on the theme, having your money follow you and double as other things too! Fantastic entry, I'm very impressed!!!!

BloedBad by Sol Roo 2019-05-04T21:09:15Z

The graphics and music were great! The platforming and game design were *fantastic*. I'm having such a good time! Going to play again.

The theme is excellent, and blood is a great currency. Tiny bit of critique: too many enemies sometimes! But it just wants me to play better.

Congrats!

@yaen firefox is usually all sorts of weird with User Media. Chrome is recommended. Thanks for trying though. I also uploaded desktop versions for linux mac and windows

Zap Signal by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04T16:15:45Z

@sol-roo Hahaha! Thank you! it shouldn't be hell to control... I'm going to have to rework the level design, so that everything doesn't overwhelm you. But I'm glad you had fun!!

Zap Signal by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04T17:59:36Z

@tozzo4316 you're so right, I forgot about the theme during development. You were supposed to get money at the end of the level to buy extra shields and bullets, based on your remaining health. But eh, I only managed one level ^-^ Thank you for playing

@vinay-rao wow you innovated yourself!! Thank you for the kind words. By the way it isn't doing speech detection, it's only checking for loudness. When it asks for calibration, you can say "pon" very quietly, and it saves your loudness level.

@pndaa Thank you for playing <3

@hygon Thank you for playing! You're right I need to refine when enemies come in and give players some rest. It's not fair as it is. <3

@webox comments like that is why I even make games <333 Thank you!!!!

@le-slo The game displays the target (bull's eye) only when you have bullets. Maybe you need to reload? Or maybe it's a bug! I'll check it out! Re: the audio detection can be calibrated every time you start the level. If you say "pon" with a normal voice (not super loud), then it saves that setting, and will detect a "pon" every time. At any rate, thank you for playing!

@edevjogos omg thanks for playing and for the feedback! I will definitely make the reload shorter :)

Zap Signal by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04T20:54:49Z

@vinay-rao thank you <3 I'm super happy to know it works with a harmonica!! I tried to make it work by blowing on the mic, but the sound loudness is too close to just breathing, so it gives a lot of false positives. A harmonica solves this!

@mrtroy comments like yours are gold, I'm so happy you had a moment of silly fun <3 Games should be doing that too, sometimes. Thank you for playing!

Zap Signal by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04T21:17:15Z

@gurkan96 thank you for the feedback. I agree, things get overwhelming, the enemies need tightening, and you need more time to reload between waves. Thank you so much for playing

Zap Signal by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04T21:27:07Z

@no-grapes-games You're right, I failed at the theme... I totally started with the theme. It was very cliche though: a shooter where you finish a level and your remaining life is used as money to buy extra ammo and a shield. Then I thought what if the upgrades scroll automatically and you just shout "NOW" into the mic when you see one you like. Then I thought my theme is weak anyway, let's go for the gusto :D I don't see how it could be the future in gaming... Thank you for playing though :)

to be clear: I don't even vote for themes. I've been doing LD for 10 years now, and what I love most about it is being surprised by the theme. I try to stay close to it, but if I'm not having fun it's the first to go.

@tiagorrech thank you <3

@copper-aardvark-games Thank you for the kind words!

Zap Signal by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04T22:32:30Z

@anonymous thank you! and yes, I had Ludum Dare's Mike resubmit it for me, because I messed something up and it said "unpublished"

@majana2 thank you ^-^ Would you mind telling me your issues? It helps a lot! Just a heads up, there isn't any voice reognition, it's just waiting for a loudness threshold. During calibration you can say "pon" in a not-too loud voice, and it will use that loudness level throughout

@someone thank you for playing and for the feedback on the Linux version! The tiny window, is probably the native resolution (160x96). I'll add a command to resize automatically. The reticle doesn't appear while you're reloading. If it doesn't appear on other occasions, it's a bug. I'll check it out. Thanks again!

Zap Signal by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-16T21:00:09Z

@purrfexionator Apparently there's a bug where the reticle doesn't acquire its target automatically on some computers. It must be a timing error. Oh well, jam game! I will hunt it down and fix it. Thank you so much for playing! Also thank you for the suggestion, I thought I *had* opted out of audio, theme and humor, but it turns out I hadn't.

@blondhie thank you so much. If it didn't pass the calibration it means it didn't see your microphone, or you have more than one microphones. I will work hard to fix that <3

@carlsonandpeeters thank you! Now that I'm working on it post-jam, it seems I just made hasty decisions, and in fact it's easy to make it very responsive. So I hope going forward I'll do a better job. Thank you for playing!

@hutchings90 I hate that our culture places so much importance on seriousness/ embarassment. Thank you for playing!

@michael-wingfield thank you! Neither have I, but I would love to see more games do that!

@moldymagnet I'm sorry to hear that! Since I coded it hastily, it only checks for one microphone. I'll do better in future.

@goerp thank you <3 I'm so glad you tried! I'm making a ton of changes post-jam, so hopefully it will be more playable...

@mateusboga thank you so much <3

@sylvie thank you <3 And thanks for reporting that. I am working on fixing the sensitivity of it.

@ursagames thank you so much for playing! I apologize for not making it, it was the middle of the night here in Greece <3 You were adorable

@tapehead Thank you. Yes working on the reload. It actually works very well when it likes the sensitivity of the microphone. But that isn't always, so I'm working to fix it!

@hugonun I'm very unhappy when I hear that people aren't allowed to be silly :( You're not hurting anybody! Thank you so much for playing!

@purrseus I hope we live to see the day where judging people for being silly isn't a thing. Thank you so so much for playing!

@ave the audio tech was just the game looking for loud sounds and triggering shots ^-^ No speech recognition, not even pitch detection, only sound/silence. Thank you very very much for playing!

@mathstr0fficial there is no voice recognition, I'm just getting the input source (mic) from the UserMedia object and then applying an Audio.Analyzer filter to it. I'm then comparing the analyzer.peak value with some volume number (i.e. -5db). If it's louder than -5db, it triggers a shot. You can check out the official tutorial included in Construct 2, called "analyzer".

@franklins-ghost thank you so much <3

@dimesto52 oh nooooo. I hope the parrot had fun too? Yes, I've been told by a few players the reload is too long. I think the bug is it doesn't hear you loud enough, so it doesn't load fast like on my PC. I'm working to fix it, so thank you!

@pixel-boy thank you <33 Wow you noticed that roll haha

@pl4typus I'm sorry :( It works on smartphones as well, although a little laggy.

@nikolay-zapolnov thank you so much <3

@kappa-b thank you! I'm glad it made you laugh! I've planned for dodging and charged attacks, but in order to keep the mic engine responsive, they have to be context sensitive, i.e. you can't have access to all 4 of them at once. Thank you for the suggestion and thank you for playing!

@evgeniya-zapolnova thank you Evgeniya!!!!! <333

@snowschu thank you! I will get to the bottom of the lagging issue, so thanks for reporting that as well!

@hypersquid-studios thank you!

@ivan-garcia-filho thank you! Thank you for the link to that game, it looks awesome! Mine is a lot simpler, it just listens for sound loudness. <3

@attala I'm so glad!! Thank *you* both

@coleslaughter aww thank you so much! I am working on it in fact! Hm the game doesn't care about pitch at all, only loudness. My theory is when you go higher pitch, you strain more and you make a louder sound. I will absolutely fix the sensitivity issue though, so thank you for reporting!

Arrow of Light by sylvie 2019-05-06T08:47:29Z

Very innovative shooting mechanic!!! The story was lovely, and I'm surprised you had time to implement a story at all! I found it a little too hard, but I persevered and it wasn't that hard afterwards. This makes me think the other reviews of ramping up difficulty have a point! It could be easier at the beginning, especially since us players aren't used to the mechanic. Oh yes, and the music is great!!

All in all, a fantastic entry, you should be proud!

Noobmancer by IanLux 2019-05-04T18:05:16Z

Everyone, congratulations! this is super-playable, gorgeous-looking, elegant game mechanic, level designs that perfectly complement the mechanic, the music is great, the theme is spot-on. I can't praise it enough. A tiny problem with the camera here and there (trees obscuring Noob), but other than that, wow.

Really really well-done!

Jukebox Panic! by Kaish 2019-05-04T20:17:43Z

Very very fun! I'm still playing, but one thing right off the bat, I think the difficulty ramps a bit too steeply on the first levels (between tutorial and level 2 for example). I'm sure it wasn't easy to iterate during the time given, so no biggie. Very fun idea too, coin hockey!!

Other than that, it's awesome! Congrats!!!

Pew Pew Crew! by Jonas Tyroller 2019-05-04T20:46:20Z

Amazing entry! And incredible making-of, thank you for that! You guys know what you're doing in the game design department, and it shows! Loved all the polish, it really adds a lot. I, too, thought the player losing power makes the game a little less enjoyable, but on the other hand it was an incentive to play better. I don't know how I'd counteract it.

All in all, a very good job!

Ok, this is incredibly pretty first off! Secondly, I love the decision making *and* the trump card mechanic, reminds me of that tabletop rpg, Talisman. I really had fun, I wouldn't mind at all a set of less serious cards. My only piece of advice would be to make the randomness a little better. As in, place cards in a discard pile, or keep a stack of cards that were recently played and don't play the same card twice in a row?

Amazing job, and extra kudos for finishing in time!

Feed Meh by MrTroy 2020-05-03T03:56:39Z

OK, the banter is *so* fun. First you gotta kill - EXCUSE ME?? The music is also shaping up nicely. Feedback time! Very on-theme, quite fun. Because the ground has no detail, going far away from the plant feels dangerous, so it's like the game is discouraging you from it? But that's where the yummy humans are!

I appreciated the directional arrow showing you where the plant is at all times, that does what it's supposed to do: it encourages exploration, because you won't get lost.

The main character slides around a bit too much for my taste, and the controls aren't tight. I expect the game to be forgiving with its collisions- let me pick that fruit not only when my dude is colliding with it, but when it's in a larger radius around my dude. Exactly like you did in the post-jam, so I know you get it <3 The controls are tightened too!

I love that Meh will eat you if you're near for too long! I love the sound fading when you're further from the action! Because the playfield is a little bland away from the action though, maybe the sound should fade towards the plant instead of the other way round? To keep the exploration interesting.

All in all, the goal is pushing all your existing mechanics to the max. Which I see you're onto. Very impressive for 2.5 days!

@trexxak I'm glad! I hope people don't learn from my incredibly crappy code. For example there's a bug where the game hangs before the boss. It's definitely because I didn't use proper enum states, because I was making it up as I went. But yeah, I'm happy to share technique, absolutely <3 Thank you

THEME

First things first, I did let the theme get lost in development. The game was initially about feeding balls to a creature via the hatches, to keep it alive. The gameplay has stayed exactly the same, you still have to feed the hatches before time runs out, but arcade games live and die on how easy they are to pick up. I thought the metaphor of busting ghosts was more apt. So the story the game tells isn't about "keeping it alive",but I'm ok with it. I prioritized gameplay over metaphor.

Re: people who ask whether I copied an existing machine: I would swear that there's nothing like this game in any amusement hall, BUT, searching through my reference folder this week, I found

[THIS](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo7mBHUHnV4)

It's a two player game where you score goals on each other using 2 blowers! It's even ghost themed, and it's obvious to me that I totally stole those flat-bottomed ghosts that are part ball and part air hockey puck!

I was obsessively researching electromechanical games a few months ago, and it obviously stuck with me subconsciously!! That said, my game is significantly more sophisticated and gameplay is very different, so no, nothing like this exists anywhere, to my knowledge.

Game Design breakdown:

A sort of pinball-ish, sort of shooter-y, sort of tractor-beam type arcade physics gameplay. I wanted to realize the fantasy of busting ghosts like Ghostbusters or Danny phantom. I felt it would be fun to make it a two step process: get the ghost, then a trap opens, then you have a limited time window to shoot your ghost in there. Two peaks of pleasure: successfully sucking and trapping a ghost, and then managing to exterminate it by successfully aiming it into a trap.

The ghosts would have to move around a bunch, to provide a moving target. If I had time (I did!) I wanted to implement a boss with a higher difficulty obviously, but also a slightly different mechanic: this time hatches open up and close automatically and randomly. Those same hatches that used to be ghost traps, now represent vulnerable spots of the boss.

Suction is an illusion!

I went about implementing a "suck" behavior. Now, real-world vacuums do not suck that far! My solution was to "engineer" one blower fan that blows uniformly through 20 small holes arranged in a half circle opposite the player. Each of those holes opens via a circuit, depending on the angle of the ghost vacuum. Probably a potentiometer, or maybe even more primitive, through 20 distinct contacts on the rotating vacuum side. The effect looks like sucking ghosts, even though it's actually ghosts being blown towards the player.

blowers.gif

The same blower fan also periodically diverts some air to blow away from the player, so that the ghosts move around on the playfield.

But the illusion of sucking doesn't stop there: When a ghost is near the vacuum, it really *does* suck it in (I emulated a suction force, by making it dependent on the inverse square of the distance - i.e. it gets weak at even tiny distances from the source).

When a ball is close enough, a sensor triggers a magnet at the tip of the vacuum, so the ghost is locked. Then, in order to shoot the ghost fast, a kicker is activated that sends it flying. Just blowing it away wouldn't be half as snappy or consistent or satisfying. So that called for more fakery.

Also to keep the balls from flying into the hatches on their own, I implemented a bump/ ridge in front of the hatches - i.e. a barrier for most balls, unless they're moving fast enough to overcome the bump.

To keep the balls from spilling out of their traps, the back half of the playfield is a platform that's angled back: I apply a small force toward the top of the playfield on any captured ball. When the game resets, the platform is raised, and the slope is enough to send the balls toward the player and out of the traps.

It looks extremely simple, but it would probably be expensive to manufacture: there are sensors for the balls going in and out (so that the game knows when to score or reset). To stay realistic and keep "costs" down I didn't implement flashing lights on the playfield or other gimmicks. Those games usually rely on cheap segmented monitors (already a Dot Matrix Display is luxury), and one core mechanical gimmick (the blower).

I think it's a fascinating field of game design, and I pride myself for thinking things through and implementing real-life mechanics.

thanks to all the feedback from players, I'm now aware of a timer bug. It doesn't always trigger, and seems to only trigger on slower systems or browsers. I did however track it down, and it's completely because of my sloppy spaghetti code: I'm not setting the enum state of the game properly. And because of that I had to use lots of if-statements, which is exactly the sort of thing the state machine design pattern is there to avoid. I'm still debugging this. In any case, don't emulate my mistakes!

3D is an illusion!

Then there's the fake 3D using sprites. That was a lot of work to figure out, especially since I made this in a 2D engine. The source code gives it away, you can have a look. But it's basically projection math. Dividing by Z to convert "flat world" coordinates to "projected" coordinates. Then the flat world can be used to design a playfield in 3D

2D playfield for designing and testing

playfield.png

3D playfield built on the 2D playfield. For displaying the game at a more immersive angle.

3D table23.png

2D physics on the right, sprites on the left.

ghostvac2.gif

The one and only sprite used for the ghosts. They get Z-sorted, based on the ghosts' Y coordinate, and also scaled depending on Z.

ghost small.png

The combined shadow and reflection sprite, that follows the ghosts around, on a separate layer (i.e. canvas) with universal 50% layer opacity:

ghost shadow.png

The ghostvac plastic nozzle is a prerendered 60-frame animation. Each of those 60 frames corresponds to one of 60 degrees that the ghostvac is constrained to.

Untitled-8.gif

The prerendered plastic border was sliced and placed on top or behind the ghost balls, accordingly:

Further Development

The things to add to this game are definitely: score and a survival mode-type gameplay. Maybe a bonus mode where you freely shoot hatches. Nothing that requires more mechanical gimmicks! It's the limitations that make this kind of machine attractive to design for.

Also an operator's settings menu, including highscore reset and timer difficulty adjustments, which also double as accessibility options. Disabled players love arcade challenges too, and giving a leeway of a few extra seconds to make the game beatable by everyone is high on my list.

Thank you for playing!

GhostVac by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2020-05-02T20:45:26Z

@marcusnystrand Thank you <3

@jivers99 glad you liked it

@vernalbehemoth thank you

@skitzogamer there kind of is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo7mBHUHnV4

@colinbellino it sounds like your browser had trouble keeping up with the game. Chrome is recommended, or the downloadable version. Otherwise this sounds like a bug? Nobody has reported the ghosts being hard to capture. Thank you for playing in any case!!

@local-minimum thank you so much <3 Yes, there's a bug and it's all my fault for not following through with a State Machine, but instead adding booleans to the mix. grrr @myself

@celdur a known bug. I only found it thanks to your feedback and a few other players', so thank you!

@heyycap the boss is slightly different: in normal play, a trap opens when you catch a ghost. During the boss round, hatches open and close randomly (and faster). So you're basically trying to hurt the boss when a hatch is open and makes it vulnerable. Thank you so much for playing!

@matt-greenbury thank you for playing. I replied above with some explanation of how the 3D works in construct

@le-sio the reflections were the easiest part! Just a layer containing all the reflected objects, and the layer set to 50% opacity. Thank you so much for playing, and I agree with your feedback about music SO much. Not enough time, alas.

@kunonooni thank you for all the kind words <3

@ava-skoog thank you so much for the feedback! Sorry about your ears!!

@aeveis @g12345 a known bug that you and a few other players helped me track down!! Thank you!

@emperor-eagle thank you <3 I agree about difficulty modes, your feedback is super on-point

@adhesion good point about the playfield becoming easier. I'm ok with it, because the time is also getting tighter, but it's great to be aware of it. The lag on movement may be your system or browser. Browsers other than chrome really underperform unfortunately. Alternatively, maybe the downloadable version plays better for you. Thank you!

@rohezal thank you so much. You might like to check out Virtual Pinball X - some great pinball tables, if you're into flipper

@peterfiftyfour thank you so much. Prerendered 3D does have that advantage

@justcamh thank you so much for the feedback. I hear you about difficulty, I think I will make it repeat normal/ boss levels but in survival mode. Let you play for a high-score.

@yellowlime Construct doesn't do 3D. I posted a reply above about how it's done ^-^ The boss has a known bug, and thank you for helping me track it down <3

@splitpainter thank you so much. It sounds like you got a bug. After getting all the initial ghosts, it's supposed to go into Boss mode. After that, it's game over, and you can do it all over again.

@patsui thank you so much. I think I could get some juice when trapping ghosts too <3

@nathant thank you so much! When in game over mode, pressing Z should restart. If not, it's the damn bug. In which case, thank you for finding it <3

@jonrei thank you <3

@dps2004 I will totally implement that. Mouse drag for aiming and Z or space for shooting? Thank you for playing and the nice feedback!

@ruthiepee thank you so much for the feedback and for playing! It's true, I need to up the feedback for catching ghosts

@eldogg thanks so much <3 yeah balls can't get through the traps, that was hard to get right :D

@acronaut thank you for the kind words and the bug report, it helped me find the bug!

@alchemic fantastic feedback, and indeed what the game needs. I'm on it <3

@joemag known bug, thanks for helping me track it down <3

@eduardo-yukio thank you so much for the feedback! I'll make the back half of the table larger, so trapped balls don't block your shots!

Thanks all

GhostVac by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2020-05-02T22:25:20Z

@colinbellino no need <3 Every vote is subjective, and therefore fair <3 I'm just glad you managed to get it to work.

GhostVac by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2020-05-03T13:09:09Z

@khud0 because construct 2 is a 2d-only engine and does not do 3d. Thanks for the kind words

GhostVac by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2020-05-03T13:12:51Z

@happy-fish-gaming-co thanks! The two players who thought it was hard so far were playing on an underperforming system/ browser. Chrome or the desktop version is recommended. Otherwise maybe I should look for a bug

Samband by Ava Skoog 2026-04-20T23:37:27Z

I had to write down the buttons BUT that's what always happens to my adhd brain with puzzles! < 3 it's such a lovely, claustrophobic, lonely mood, thank you for making it!

What's that signal? by Local Minimum 2026-04-24T22:15:42Z

I love love love love everything about it @local-minimum And what a lovely speaking voice!

The art was SO trippy, I couldn't believe nobody had done an art installation where objects have textures that call out the object names. I'm still impressed, I played twice just to have a chance to experience the space again.

The poem at the end was lovely. The execution of the theme was sublime, I was both flailing around AND being guided by the "Signal"

How many minutes of recorded audio is there? And how did you have time to both design it and organize the audio files and textures. One of the best jam games I've tried this year!

PING by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2026-04-25T16:41:18Z

@drainkid probably because UFO 50 are really similar to jam games, small, good ideas. But mine is definitely way less polished.

PING by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2026-04-25T16:44:03Z

Dr. Cool Whale Against The Electronicles by Yorsh 2026-04-23T13:25:25Z

the graphics are stellar! I'm amazed at what devs can do in 2 days <3 Very polished, very on-theme! Very tense gameplay, and an innovative idea for damage dealing!!

Thanks for making this! It's inspiring

Jim's Quest for Birthday present by Sobigdrasil 2026-04-24T14:37:09Z

so wholesome! thank you for making it! Love the integration of the theme, the story and the art!!

The Last Signal by DarthWaxus 2026-04-23T13:28:57Z

This is great! Fantastic mood and ambience, love the tension when riders appear, as others have remarked it reminds me too of an old-school racer, and that's fantastic!

Blind Run by Rolly 2026-04-22T18:46:15Z

"A really handsome one. The developer did a good job" that really cracked me up!

I love how additional mechanics pile on, and I loved the absurdity of having to rotate a mole that only moves forward until it hurts itself!

It was weirdly on-theme!!

It's so cool that you managed to write so much dialogue *and* think of so many puzzles. You should be proud of this game <3

Marsacre by ThorPalsson 2026-04-25T00:36:42Z

The personality and writing carry this hard! hamster facecam, PSX aesthetic, "Father, come in! Come in! Come in, Father!". I was laughing while shooting, which is the dream. a crosshair would help. Main gameplay note: enemy HP feels a touch high for the run-and-gun energy you're going for; lowering it (or one-shots) would let the adrenaline really cook. Loved it.

Dragonia Siege by Euler Moises 2026-04-24T21:42:25Z

I love everything, the theme is well-integrated, and the mechanics fun!!

Just the AI art, you don't need it, it spoils the presentation.

I Had No Signal! by fabelay 2026-04-24T23:28:12Z

wow lovely mood. It was tense throughout!!!

Cleared To Land by JHax 2026-04-21T13:25:39Z

So very lemmings-y!!! (even the explosions!) Love love love my time with it. Still playing it in fact. The pilot confirmations sounds are hilarious!!!!! I actually liked the convoluted (but in physically accessible positions for my fingers) control scheme, it added to the fantasy and definitely added to the chaos!

I'll be playing more of this!

To walk on Strange Roads? by alyd asmar 2026-04-23T10:30:47Z

the fish person saying bubble bubble bubble broke me :D Such a lovely game, such a bold move and great interpretation of the theme! When did you even have time to make all those lovingly designed glyphs!! I loved having a companion pdf to use with the game!

The music is perfect for the mood. Art is lovely.

Thank you for making this!

Salvager by J4cko16 2026-04-24T11:34:58Z

I'm a sucker for these kind of replayable games, and this one is so well-done! Thank you! It always surprises me how good and polished experiences can come out of this compo <3

CRASHDAR by Roroto Sic 2026-04-24T11:13:42Z

Wow! The UI is stellar. And the limitations of the Game Boy didn't stop you one bit. I want to praise you for using the tool you knew best, and making such a fun game!!

Congrats!!

Federal Bureau of Dance by drainkid 2026-04-25T16:43:10Z

Amazing work! One of my favorites!

Echo by FunnyPumpkin 2026-04-24T22:20:54Z

What a clever, clever use of the theme! I made a bat game with a sonar mechanic too and it's NOTHING like this, which is honestly the best part of playing it. Same starting idea, completely different game.

The sonar effect is stellar. That moment where a ping reveals just enough of the geometry to commit to a plan, but not enough to be sure, that's the whole puzzle genre in one mechanic. And you're letting the *player's memory* do the heavy lifting instead of cluttering the screen with UI, which takes real restraint.

Puzzle design is great too. The ramp feels earned — each level taught me something without a tutorial pop-up. Rare.

Really glad I played this. Would love to see where you take it.

Very good use of the theme! I had a lot of fun. Also love the vapor wave 90s esthetic

GIMME TV by pocketdog 2026-04-22T18:14:21Z

I love that you discarded the theme and went where the spirit moves you! This is such a fun shooter, I've been playing for 40 minutes and only stopped to rate it. There is a dominant strategy, and that's to sit near the alien/ meteor spawn site and shoot diagonally so nothing gets through, but the game difficulty increases in a way that makes every upgrade necessary, and every wave fun.

I loved the addition of the random cosmetics shop!!! And the energetic music

All in all great entry!
