LD39 — Running out of Power

Achluophobia by Ajayajayaj 2017-08-03T06:47:20Z

Hey! Really liked the concept of the game, and the main mechanic is pretty cool. There's a lot of tension in being defenseless as you charge the flashlight. I just wish there was a bit more to it. If there was some kind of enemy progression, or maybe you had to find and crank multiple generators? Going left also just ends up making it so you lose your battery after a while. I also thought that the art was a little simplistic, but honestly not bad and fit the overall feel of the game. So all in all, you have a great concept, and I would love to play a full- length something like this in the future if you made it.

My Dream by Local Minimum 2017-08-06T17:30:55Z

Pretty interesting story, and a nice little interactive experience. Wasn't really fun, but the text carried the experience for me. However, I thought the battery mechanic was kind of incomprehensible, and I could never finish the story because the battery would run out on me.

SQUADS by PixelProductions 2017-08-02T17:50:26Z

Wow, awesome with a killer concept! I really liked the fact that I switched to the easier to control soldier to keep the robot going, and it would have made it so controlling the robot was something that I could learn by experimenting with the soldier. The problem was, I would get the battery, and then it would say back to robot- what do I press to go back to the robot? I had no idea how to go back. That part frustrated me, but other than that good controls and fun mechanics. Except for that screenshake and the robot switch, everything else you did a really good job on.

Lionel's Weekend by nidup 2017-08-04T14:53:58Z

Love this game! The concept is great and the graphics look very cute. I like the element of planning that lets you play. It gets pretty difficult without much room for strategy besides memorizing the room. I liked the killing of the rats to make an exit strategy, so maybe as another way, you could have little lightbulbs across the map. The player would see an exit strategy in advance and power them on before they pick up the crate, that way when the lights go out they have points of interest for them to go to, like leaving a trail of breadcrumbs for themselves in advance. Maybe certain lightbulbs go out faster than others, so you have to plan out the order you turn them on before the lights go out?! And worst case if you do it wrong, it's not impossible to escape the level, as it would just play like the game plays now.

VoltRush by Reiv 2017-08-07T16:27:33Z

I really like the graphics and the gameplay was cute and simple. I thought that it was kind of easy to die as you got further, and then to spawn back at the start was kind of annoying. I think there should have been checkpoints.

Recapitate by superpokeunicorn 2017-08-04T07:06:26Z

This was a great experience! I had a lot of fun throwing my head around in that Zelda boomerangey fashion. I loved the surprises, and how you spaced them out to make sure the player would never get bored. The art was crisp, clean, and the main character stood out. I loved the enemy placement. I also admire and will keep in mind your decision to have multiple levels of difficulty. I thought the game was too hard and had to scale down one, and once I beat it, I felt the need to try it on normal, then on hard! So you really roped me in, because I loved every second of it. Impressive, and if you made this a full length platformer, maybe with more of a story, I'd definitely play it.

Gastric Hell by dwemthy 2017-08-04T08:14:56Z

It was a pretty nice maze game, but the UI was hard to tell what was going on. The candle was difficult to read and so was the minimap. I really liked the look of the main menu screen, and I wish that the look had carried through to the actual game. But really creative enemy designs and enjoyed the music!

PLASMAGUN! by yuigoto 2017-08-03T03:51:46Z

First off, super juicy, loved the screen shake and the explosion effects. It honestly reminded me a lot of Nuclear Throne, which is one of my favorite games. Art assets and animation were all great too. Gameplay wise, I found it to be hard at first, because I'd instinctively shoot everything- and I would die because my plasma tank ran out. Then I noticed the plasma tank was already depreciating constantly, so wasting ammo would do me no good. But, then I realized that enemies deal less damage then I expend my plasma tank on killing them- which means letting them hit me and kill themselves gave me more time to find them. Plus, this was even more viable because my health was reset to 100 every level. So I would just go through levels, searching for crowds robots to explode all over me. I think you should playtest it more, fiddle around with metrics for depreciation and stuff, and it will be a super fun rogue-like. Your foundation is awesome.

LOW BATT by simonhutchinson 2017-08-06T17:43:08Z

Really like the graphics, and the audio really sets a nice mood. I couldn't really tell what the goal of the game was, besides making things look cool. This made it feel more like a toy than an actual game.

Gem Diver by Yirggzmb 2017-08-03T03:32:29Z

Very cute simple, game with good game play and unique, creative worlds. My one complaint with this is if it had been given a bit more asset polish. I though the fish with the crayon coloring in in the water level was cute, and I wish that that childlike presentation had been more consistent throughout. That music got a little monotonous after a while too. I would say this is a great concept, and could be pushed further by investing more time on the asset polishing side of things.

ZapDune by diptoman 2017-08-02T04:24:37Z

Wow, seriously fun. Had a great time zipping around, and the graphics were BEAUTIFUL. The mechanic is awesome and totally scalable for something bigger.

GREED by NORRIMO 2017-08-06T19:27:08Z

I think you should put a link to the windows version, because at first glance it looked like you only had source code. The game itself was honestly kind of confusing. I had no idea what I was doing and the way the game functioned. I wish you had put instructions in game. The graphics were kind of rough, but I liked the enemy design. I think you needed more UI and instructions (to be fair, I didn't play your post jam versions).

Battery Penetrates by ToadieTechnika 2017-08-03T06:16:15Z

Oh my god, this is pretty friggin' heavy! Those heavy synthy beats at the start set a friggin' dark tone for it, and those batteries... penetrating? each other already make me feel uneasy. But then I started playing, and I actually started... liking it? lol. This is actually pretty fun and quirky (if not a little immature :P). Kind of reminds me of a WarioWare microgame. Ok, I'm gonna stop writing this review and get back to playing it, good job!

Journey in the Dark by FurkanFS 2017-08-04T14:43:20Z

Pretty cool game. Had a kind of Limbo vibe to it, and the giant dinosaurs that towered over you made for some interesting discoveries with the flashlight. That being said, jumping was always a challenge for me, and there was a lot of trial and error. However, the audio and the art very much put you in a cave environment, which is why I gave your mood a 4/5!

Remote by oab 2017-08-04T08:24:29Z

Love love love the animations for this. It really shows that they were your focus, and I totally think the skill with which you made them kept my attention the game. Good amount of challenge, and even though the gameplay was pretty simple and "been-done," the artwork and character of the appliances really shines through. Also your description is hilarious. Great job!

Jetpack Miner by digitaldude555 2017-08-04T06:28:46Z

I really like the concept of bringing the rocks back to the ship after picking them up, and having to slowly work your way out. For me, it was a little too challenging, but I feel like that was just because of the distances. Still, pretty fun!

Discipline and Punish by shiitman 2017-08-06T18:47:08Z

Pretty interesting, but wasn't really all that educational, except for the quotes by Foucault. I wish there were more art assets, like a black and white overview of your fictional civilization.

Fuse Cell by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2017-08-06T21:39:35Z

Great game! Amazing graphics, beautiful music. The gameplay was super creative and offered a lot of room for skill growth. Controls were tight and collision boxes were very fair. UI was really understandable. The theme was utilized really well here-- all around, this was a great entry. If I had one recommendation, it would be to have an animation for after you've drained your opponent. That's it. Great job!

Save My Plane ?? by sagarpatel25700 2017-08-06T19:20:23Z

This was a really solid entry. Liked the controls, the ease of access, and the visuals were nice. I think that there could be some better progression- if the further you went the more different things looked to keep people curious. Otherwise, really good job!

No Sorcerer's Sky by TheFlyingKeyboard 2017-08-04T15:04:57Z

I could never remember what the recipes were, or how many I had, so a lot of my time was wasted clicking around looking for the right thing to spend my resources on. Wish there had been better UI to remedy this, as well as instructions in-game, because even though the concept of building shields made sense, I didn't know how to do it. The music was really peaceful, and the graphics look pretty nice.

Lantern by Kaban 2017-08-04T15:10:41Z

Pretty nice simple gameplay. The audio really complemented the gameplay and I liked the look of the little guy with his flashlight. Wish there had been more progression and some more variety/strategy to the enemy designs. But, this was a great final product and you should be proud!

A LED story by hairaz 2017-08-02T04:03:49Z

I had a bug that happened on like the third or fourth grass image seam. The game froze on me as I was jumping around and I couldn't go any further. I must have hit just the right spot and crashed it. That's my biggest criticism. Other than that, I love the art, and the puzzles were fun. That double jump mechanic was kind of hard to figure out, but other than that, very intuitive and overall good feelings.

Power Crystals by chispaLBC 2017-08-06T17:07:08Z

Graphics looked pretty nice, but the overall gameplay was simple and I really didn't have a good understanding of what was going on. That audio was pretty grating when clicking on the crystal to recharge. I liked the animations on the enemies though.

Running out of Butter by Particles GameStudio 2017-08-02T05:28:48Z

I was enjoying my time with all the little visual touches you added to the game, like buttering the bread (lol) until that massive difficulty spike at level 4. I looked at your walkthru and get how to complete it, and after seeing the other levels, I respectfully think you should have saved that level to the end of the sink session. I didn't know what those pink things were and wouldn't have known then were jump-able, and wouldn't have been able to see them when I started the level. That level alone was kind of unfair. The rest of the game felt super rich and buttery, and otherwise, great job!

HE BEAT HER. by Angela He 2017-08-06T18:39:28Z

The art was absolutely beautiful, but there were some problems with the actual gameplay. I was honestly really unsure of what to put in the box and though the question mark showed some options, I would have liked to have a selection at first to know what I could and couldn't do (or say). The fact that I ended up needing to use the walkthrough reaffirms that options for the dialogue would have been more effective.

Politics - Rome by Julisep 2017-08-02T17:22:23Z

The environment and world building is really cute, especially that bit with the 1.2 US dollars. I would say more time could be spent on helping people understand the mechanics. I also found things weren't making sense, like trying to talk to the advertiser after talking to everybody else wouldn't bring up anything. However, I really like the concept and would encourage you to go further with it!

Stargust by eggnog 2017-08-03T04:05:57Z

I love the art assets- the smiling cloud, the dancing dog. It was great! I wish there had been music too, but that wasn't so bad. The game itself was a little tricky, and I wish there had been more emphasis on easing the player into it, or instructions that popped up as I played the game. But, seriously, so cute and really sets up a nice mood!

In Battery We Trust by PGDevPatryk 2017-08-06T17:17:33Z

I liked the mood, and there was a nice relation to the theme. However, I think that the visuals could use some work. It was hard to tell when bullets were being fired because of their relation in color to the background. It was also hard to fire bullets in the first place. I also found that I would have liked the flashlight to have a toggle functionality, rather than a press and hold functionality.

The Torches Are Burning Low by Didactylos 2017-08-02T04:39:23Z

Graphics were nice, but my issue was with the mechanic of everything getting dark. If I died, things kept getting darker, so I would progress, not be able to see anything, and fall in a pit... however, the shadows and mood were totally engaging. Also, I had the Windows version.

Forty2Eleven by rEaX 2017-08-03T21:53:46Z

Good work on the asset creation side of things, there's a ton of nice looking 3D models that all have pretty unique functions. The game mechanics were fun and the entire experience was pretty fun. I just thought that there could have been a stronger conclusion in the end. I may have not even had much of a story and just had four bases in northeast, southeast, northwest and southwest, and to find and kill all the enemies.

From Kingdom to Freedom by Studio RTV 2017-08-02T04:14:32Z

Hi! I tried playing it on my Windows computer, but I got this error message "There should be 'FKTK_Data' folder next to the executable".

Light Switch Crusader by TedScottPilgrim 2017-08-04T07:27:12Z

Brilliant- I felt pretty creepy once I realized that I had just broken into a little kids room just to shut off his TV. This game was one of my standout pieces of the jam that I've played so far, not taking itself seriously at all, fits right into the theme, tells the most absurd story I've heard in a while, has moments of tension (when those cats broke their paths I nearly crapped myself), and the music fits that disturbing, yet innocent feel the game hits. I would say that it didn't outstay its welcome, and I feel this game fits nicely into a five minute playtime. I think that if there was a bit more to it (whether that be an easier entry point that leads to multiple, escalating locations) or by raising the stakes of the story to make it even more hilarious, you could really turn this into a longer product after the jam.

The Leech by Peter Sheehan 2017-08-03T04:36:24Z

@diptoman Thanks, will do!

The Leech by Peter Sheehan 2017-08-03T05:43:34Z

@Yuigoto Thanks! I just made an update to the itch.io page that downloads it as a zip file instead of an exporter. Really appreciate the feedback!

The Leech by Peter Sheehan 2017-08-03T21:42:39Z

@Poffle I'm sorry I didn't explain this in the game too well- but there is a way to recharge your hearts. If you "sleep" in the bed in your room (which basically means going all the way to the left of the room) by pressing the Z key, you recharge all the hearts you gained.

The Leech by Peter Sheehan 2017-08-04T06:34:37Z

@superpokeunicorn - Thanks for the detailed review. I didn't do a lot of playtesting aside from my one younger hardcore gaming sibling, and your point is a good one. Next time around, (or when I get a chance to rescale this game), I'll watch out for those feedback loops. Really appreciate the constructive criticism and will play your game soon too!

@chris-coe - Thanks for the constructive criticism! I also wanted to say again that your game stood out a lot.

@digitialdude555 - Thanks for the 5/5 on art! I really tried to pour a lot of the time into the animations, and I'm happy it showed.

The Leech by Peter Sheehan 2017-08-04T22:15:52Z

@simonhutchinson Chances look good for a Mac build.... you may have to wait a day but it will happen.

The Leech by Peter Sheehan 2017-08-06T15:37:49Z

@toadietechnika You are 2 bosses away from the final one. Press Z to continue going and you'll find out some pretty cool stuff....

The Leech by Peter Sheehan 2017-08-06T18:28:11Z

@simonhutchinson Sorry, I don't know what's going on. It may be that gamemaker is having issues with Sierra. I'm planning on making an html version for the post-jam in Unity, but for now I'll remove the link. Hopefully you can try out the html version when it gets released!

Space Bear Panic by Chris Coe 2017-08-03T07:03:58Z

Wow! I'm blown away by your attention to little detail in this game. Everything feels polished and the whole experience is engaging, beginning to end. From the start, I understood what I had to do, and when I first saw the entity, I immediately got creeped out, and wanted to control it. The ship feels expansive, but not too large.

The game felt a little too easy, and in all honesty to win I only needed to block three doors. In the end, the entity wasn't that threatening and I wish it was. One idea would be if you placed instances of the entity behind an already sealed entrance with a fuel cell behind it. That way the player has to break through and destroy the entrance, while in the process release the entity! But that's just one suggestion, and the easiness is a minor nitpick. This game is decidedly a polished gem. Excellent job.

Step out of the light by Zdeno 2017-08-03T00:12:09Z

Cute Sokoban style game, but I got stuck on one of the puzzles towards the end. I also really liked the art style and the little puns the robot spat out, though yeah, they were a little excessive in the sex jokes department.

Dont ask me to stop being a outdated junkrobot by Ludic Studios 2017-08-02T04:57:51Z

Like chimadan said, superjuicy. Love the animation and artwork. I would say my one gripe was with the controls. The mouse wasn't changing the way my character faced, so besides the bullet time it felt awkward to initiate the bullet time by pressing the shift, mouse, and make sure I was moving away from enemies all at the same time. But that's nitpicky. Everything felt stylish and the OST was

Torch Boy by FloBar 2017-08-02T07:29:19Z

Super cute graphics, but it got a little too difficult for my tastes. Maybe an easier first level for the player to experiment with the really unique mechanics.

Coffee is Power by Tyler Miller 2017-08-02T17:33:42Z

Very cute, and while the music choice was random, definitely added some excitement to the game. Was there some Tropico thrown in lol? I got confused by the ending tho. I got the idea from brainstorming, stood by the computer, but when my progress was finished, it just said "Game Jam is Over, What were you doing?" To me, that sounded like I did something wrong, when I still had 20 hours left. ?

Hungry Harry's Climb by PBG 2017-08-04T07:40:11Z

Love the audio and the animations, and those little Chomps Harry makes are very cute. It was kind of tricky to navigate for me at first, but after playing it a few times, I got the hang of it. I think you could have made that first stage a little easier to allow players easier entry. Also, one glitch I noticed was if you dig all the way to the bottom of the first stage, there's no way to get out and you spawn in the second stage automatically if you touch a certain point. Glitch aside, great work and solid execution!

Sensory by VarelseGames 2017-08-03T03:19:02Z

I had a lot of surprises and intrigue with this one. It took me a few tries to solve some of the puzzles, but when I did it really made me feel like I had discovered something. My one issue was the story, or lack of it. I think it would have made me more interested in the world and what I was doing there. I got the impression I was fixing a computer, but it just would have been icing on a tasty cake to have more of a reason to be fixing the computer. Of course, very cool idea and the graphics fit the mechanics nicely.

DRAIN by LERPish 2017-08-03T06:37:15Z

That slow motion is pretty sick. I love the trail your sword leaves and the wide range of enemies to fight. I would say that if there was more of a story to it, that got me motivated to kill these robot guys, I'd feel it'd be a lot more complete, but that's just me. Other than that, zipping around and cutting enemies feels good!

Sleepy Orphan Simulator by Barney Cumming 2017-08-04T08:06:30Z

Holy crap, these graphics are the best ones I've seen for the entire jam. The colors, the expressions, everything looked great. The audio was super creepy and added to the atmosphere, but honestly, I was kind of confused by why it was needed besides just being weird with all the licking and squirting and repetition of "You're in an Orphanage." I thought for sure some heavy stuff was going to happen, but the gameplay and the story really didn't feel all that hopeless (quite the opposite, it was hilarious). But the audio, idk if it was just getting a little too much, not really hitting the funny like the rest of the game was. However, besides the audio, the gameplay was stellar. I found the game to get pretty difficult at points, especially when I didn't know I could eat bricks. Surprising, but I wouldn't have known if I hadn't watched the video. Honestly, I am blown away by the polish on this and give you two giant thumbs up. Awesome work.

ANSWER ME! by Viliar 2017-08-06T18:12:25Z

Pretty nice game, but it could have used more juice to really get me to keep playing. I liked the dialogue options and the humor of the game was fun too. Also, I disagree with what @angela-he said, it was pretty simple to understand. I think you could have made the art assets a little more interesting too, all in all, polish would have done this typing game well. Nice work.

PotatIO by Ash Duong 2017-08-03T04:31:23Z

Pretty beautiful twist on the "clicker" genre! The art was absolutely beautiful, with all the lighting and particle effects. I wish that big red button really did click down, though! I loved the cute story and the music, as everybody has been saying. I wish there had been a pause button because it was so easy to get myself into a position where I could not plant any more potatoes at the start. I had to restart like 5 times. Building on that, I thought the game was a bit too tough at the beginning, especially if you haven't watched the tutorial.Still, very cute and great work!
