I liked it. It was fun and I loved the concept

gmfk07 2017-07-31 22:09

Really enjoyed the game: just wondering, are there other "justice is served endings" besides [SPOILERS] the one you get from finding the knife-related texts on her phone?

lukesta 2017-07-31 22:32

I can't believe my eyes. I just found ~70mb's of high quality graphics packed with nice sounds and a complex game design in a ludum dare game. This is a very impressive masterwork of a game keep your good work up!

sir-mr-dr-prof-sr-jr-phd 2017-07-31 23:07

This game looks excellent and it was pretty enjoyable though it didn't really go with the "Running out of Power theme" once I won I liked trying out new actions and seeing what would happen such as 'Scream' and 'Die'. @gmfk07 I won by (spoilers) looking through her phone and finding bipolar related notes and texts.

angela-he 2017-07-31 23:28

omg!! Thanks all for the great feedback! I'm so happy you guys liked it.

@sir-mr-dr-prof-sr-jr-phd yeahh.. I interpreted 'power' as psychological power, woops :P

@gmfk07 there are 3 'justice' endings, all of which are slightly related and bring a new level of complexity to the plot.

xel 2017-08-01 03:17

Amazing art and solid music to back up the tone of the game. A very interesting take on the theme. It was slightly difficult to think of what to write. Having contextual images or more descriptive intro text to better describe the scene might make it easier to come up with what actions the game would accept. Overall a great game for being made in 48 hours. I'd love to see this expanded on post-jam.

chillhammer 2017-08-01 03:29

I was in the room with @gmfk07 . We found the other justice endings. We didn't even knew Gianna existed before, pretty amazing!

zchen 2017-08-01 03:34

Super impressed by this game! The art is amazing for a game jam entry. There were parts of the game which got me pretty engrossed, especially when I'll be chasing down a lead. The audio did a great job setting the mood too. Good design sense with providing hints. I'm not a big adventure/story game player so it took me awhile to realize I could do certain actions. I even managed to get a 'justice' ending without using some actions (I took a peek at the walkthrough after I finished).

I would have liked to be able to play the game from just my keyboard, especially since the main interaction is through typing. I'm not sure if it's possible right now but I often had to switch to my mouse to click on stuff, i.e. when I lost.

Overall I'm really impressed with the polish of this game. Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing what else you make in the future!

herman-chau 2017-08-01 04:17

Wow, this was super awesome! I loved the courtroom setting (it reminded me of Phoenix Wright) and it felt like a super interesting blend of Japanese visual novels and Western text-based adventures!

The plot was also really good and kept me engaged until I got all 3 endings without a walkthrough

austinspafford 2017-08-01 05:56

Awesome work! The sheer amount of content in this (especially across all disciplines) is simply staggering! It very much reminded me of Her Story, especially in terms of the great way the decision tree is kept very short, but instead is navigated with new ideas/terms.

Admittedly, I tend to get quite lost in adventure games, so... much to my embarrassment, I admit looking at the other comments here to try to get unstuck.

zaygellard 2017-08-01 06:48

can you export this hybrid 32 and 64 bit?

hishicorne 2017-08-01 07:49

Oh god. The art. The concept. Honestly this is f*cking awesome. One of the best entry for sure. Trying to find some actions is very fun. The story, as short as it can be, is taking. Thank you for making this game !!!

vija02 2017-08-01 08:18

This is.. amazing... I can't believe i'm seeing a game this good in a game jam haha. Graphics, music, plot was awesome. However, the controls was kinda annoying at times. When skipping the dialogue too fast, the game can kinda bug out and jump into it's over. And also, it's annoying to have to reach for my mouse every time. Other than that, this is the best game i've played so far

dene 2017-08-01 09:39

Wow! Art, music, plot! That's one of the coolest entries for this LD, congratulations :) It's little bit hard to guess what to write at first (so you can just ragequit) but after some time it's getting more and more interesting. Love it.

werlar 2017-08-01 10:13

Great art, music and plot!

mac-dragoness 2017-08-01 10:33

amazing art, music, plot and gameplay! love it! really cool game!

binaryspark 2017-08-01 11:51

Very impressive. Nice art, music and sound effects, and an interesting interpretation of the theme! I couldn't find a solution but very nice work overall.

ryzy27 2017-08-01 15:10

Looks great and sound is very nice too. I've found 3 endings. Are there more?

sgt3v 2017-08-01 17:12

Very interesting and fun endings! Some made me laugh so much :D

ahintoflime 2017-08-01 17:15

Pretty incredible. The music is amazing, and really sets the tone. Obviously the art is very impressive. I'm not very good at it though, it's pretty difficult to think of the right words.

alaah 2017-08-01 21:21

Screenshot from 2017-08-01 23-19-09.png

The data folder is right there, but whitespaces in filenames probably don't help.

daydreamerstudios 2017-08-01 22:09

Just as everyone says, the art and music of this game are fascinating and the story goes right into the feels. Keep it up!

simonhutchinson 2017-08-02 01:08

Great game. The music is really fantastic. It's mindblowing that you got this all done and in such a nice, tight aesthetic in 48 hours. Super-strong entry.

aevek 2017-08-02 02:48

The art is awesome, but I had a really hard time understanding what was happening and how what I was doing affected the outcome.

john-li 2017-08-02 03:56

Fantastic graphics! Encountered a few bugs when I keep mashing enter, but it was certainly fun trying to figure out what the right thing to say was!

arkthalohs 2017-08-02 06:08

Amazing art and story! I really liked how you basically get one action and you have to unravel everything by changing that one thing that you do. It's a cool concept, and it's really well-done here. I do wish that it was a bit faster to get back into another attempt after I tried something, given that's basically how the mystery is unraveled and I ran into a few bugs where the break would end and I'd get the text about what happened to the client while I was in the middle of another action, like talking to the client or trying to get at the ex's phone. Overall a really amazing entry! Great job!

moosalicious 2017-08-02 11:42

Incredible art and the implementation of it. This game really looks and feel coherent, like it was made with a vision from the start. The word-guessing is a little awkward but for 48 hours this is great!

yetman 2017-08-02 12:06

The art and music is amazing. I like the game concept too but the gameplay was a bit of annoying. "Over 220 possible choices" and I only was able to find 2. I think the game should have less word guessing. I would like to make a suggestion: I think you can use WordNet (http://wordnet.princeton.edu/wordnet/) to find the nearest word in your possible actions list. WordNet supplies a list of synonyms and hypernyms for a large dictionary of words. I only tried it on NLTK in python so I don't know how it can be used with unity. However, I still enjoyed your game. Thank you :D

ramkey 2017-08-02 12:12

Very cool game, I just suck at it xD. The artstyle is brutal for a compo. Great job

diptoman 2017-08-02 13:29

The art and the mood is really intruiging and well done. But I have no clue whatsoever as to what I should type in for the game to proceed. I think the game would have run better if there were choices instead.

angela-he 2017-08-02 13:48

Thanks so much for all the nice feedback :DD I'm kinda overwhelmed. So glad you guys like the art and music.

Bugs! I'm going to try fixing the bugs O_O

@yetman I'll try to use WordNet, thank you for showing me!! PS just in case you're confused, choices /= endings. Kinda makes me sad you only got 2.. Mind sharing what you inputted/tried?

@diptoman I don't want to limit player freedom too much - I have some pretty blatant hints in the 'help' button - what else would you suggest?

crabman 2017-08-02 14:43

As others have said, the visuals are impressive and I like the investigative gameplay, though it's currently a bit too unforgiving and too hard to figure out what keywords work. If you found a way to make that easier, so that the player doesn't have to "fight" the parser and can focus more on the investigation itself, that could be really cool.

That said, I'm honestly really uncomfortable with the story. I'm not sure if this is different when you play other endings, but the one I found had some pretty ugly implications. Not intentionally, I'm sure, but it still leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.

ganbaregameskyle 2017-08-02 18:34

Nice gimmick, wasn't able to solve it.

Also I couldn't get the audio to work in for Linux version.

zuzupd 2017-08-02 19:11

Wow, this is a really cool game. The atmosphere is great, the story is well presented and the art is amazing. I absolutely love it. I look forward to full release :)

kippllo 2017-08-02 20:52

Awesome game! The art is amazing!!

wolar 2017-08-02 21:09

Pretty impressive work even for a jam and you did a compo! So much art, good music, nice take on the theme. I only had a problems to ask / do the correct stuff to even progress with the game, I often tried to do something obvious to me that was not intended and thus supported but even though I was able to get 2 endings.

angela-he 2017-08-02 21:34

:D My day is brightened by these comments! I came home early from work to modify the game based on feedback. Maybe this isn't allowed, but I can’t stand by and watch my player experience be subpar. It’s now: * Easier: First time you click the help button, it gives you 4 basic commands, think, talk, observe, and grab. The second time you click it, you get the walkthrough link. * After losing > 4 times, the lose cutscene is much shorter. * 15 more choices using http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/ from @ and Youtuber playthroughs (thanks, @yetman!) * Fixed bug caused when pressing ‘enter’ many times (I think) * Fixed weird logic causing certain dialogues to go out of order

I’ve also attached the Game Jam version in the description. If this breaks LD rules, please tell me. Thanks, everyone who gave feedback!

@ganbaregameskyle I don't have a Linux so I can't test it :( I rebuilt it tho. Not sure what's going on there.

kalyrical 2017-08-02 22:41

Holy cow. I can't believe this was a Ludum Dare game and a compo entry at that. Amazing visuals. The gameplay reminded me a bit of Her Story which was one of my favourite narrative based games. Felt like a true detective playing this. Amazing work Angela!

hhsaez 2017-08-02 22:49

Amazing artwork and sound! I'm still trying to get the other endings I agree that you need more options or clues to understand what you can do Then again, amazing work for the compo. I can't wait for the next release!

kungkras 2017-08-02 22:51

This game contains some serious art!! And it has a really intreguing storyline that deals with complex issues too. So much ambition that was fullfilled!! I am really impressed.

I feel like it's a bit hard to play though nad would have liked a list of all the possivble actions, but I have always been bad at these kind of text games so I'm not a reliable witness when it comes to that part xD

gonutz 2017-08-02 23:15

Please do not call your download "Windows.zip" or I will not be able to tell your "Windows(100).zip" from the next game's "Windows(101).zip" ;-)

This is an excellent game! The graphics and music are awesome, it looks and feels so real. It is very immersive, the characters feel real and deep, even through the limited interaction that we get with them. Your drawing is fantastic, huge respect for that!

I was not able to come up with the solution myself, after falling asleep in court and finding out about the dog, I was not going anywhere so I looked at the walkthrough. That still did not make the game less interesting at all, seeing the story unfold is an emotional experience. You managed to make me feel for the characters, I cannot stress how cool this is, I did not expect this kind of experience from any of the compo entries!

I am not sure about the message that you bring across with the solution to the mystery. It says (SPOILERALERT) "Now you think about all the domestic violence cases" where the reality is that in 99.9 % the guy really is the bad one. So this kind of thinking is a bit dangerous I feel.

There is one technical thing, the controls :-) I had to sometimes click the input with the mouse although it is the only text field. The same goes for the restart button (or rather text), I should just be able to ENTER my way through everything as this is the kind of game that you start over and over again.

Overall I think it goes without saying that I find this one of the top games in this competition. Thank you very much for this, I will follow your work from now on.

zgragselus 2017-08-03 01:11

I'm quite confused by the game. I was unable to beat it (it misses instructions - and I wasn't sure what to really input) without some external help. Now to some technical issues:

Please in text-input games, try to always focus text input. It is ruining game experience when you always have to grab mouse and re-focus.

Now as for the graphics and music. The quality was high enough, it matched together (yet compared to some other games here on Ludum Dare it felt 'too simple' ... don't get me wrong, this isn't necessarily bad, but I'd like to see it in 'Life is Strange' like way). The game has quite good storytelling (I'd say one of the best this time on Ludum Dare).

Keep up the good work.

mr-houdini 2017-08-03 14:53

This is an amazing entry and the art is astonishing for sure. I spent a lot of time playing and enjoying the discovery. I share the main idea of all the comments before, amazing game,

but

// *SPOILER ALERT:* //

I'm not sure about it because I haven't been able to find all finals and I'm not an expert but I think you have mistaken the concept of the mental illness, bipolarity. The bipolar disorder is altering periods of depression (hypomania) and elevated mood (mania). During the mania, the person can be either euphoric or irritable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in this game I've understand the illness as something more likely a personality disorder such as schizophrenia (what I don't know about).

If I've understood correctly the girl has this bipolar disorder and that's why she attacked her boyfriend with a knife. And that would be so wrong. I'm telling this because this misinformation could feed the popular idea that bipolarity could be dangerous for social behaviour and this is not true.

Please correct me if i misunderstood the information and I'll erase this comment.

Great game anyways, impressive for a compo! Great job!

vulpem 2017-08-03 15:15

*clap, clap, clap*

After glancing over the comments, i really don't think i can add anything else. I agree that it would be nice to be able to play using only the keyboard, and the unfocusing input was kinda annoying at times.

Also, i couldn't figure out what to do at first... since different actions automatically targeted different people, and i had no idea what to try. I gotta admit i ended up using the walkthrough... (thanks for the link). And i enjoyed it a lot more this way, and i tried not to spoil anything big to myself.

However... here end my critiques. We can't forget this is a Jam and the time and the resources are limited. And what you achieved with those is amazing. I don't know how you did something like that. Either you're not fully human, or you're just a beast.

I loved the art, the story and the characters. The "open end-ness", kind of, lets you fill the blanks with your own story, and that makes it feel so much personal. I don't know if it's a conscious choice, but it works really well.

Just... well. I'm no professional, but the best tip i can give is "Keep it up". You've already come so far, i can't even imagine what you could do with more time and experience, since you've got the talent.

angela-he 2017-08-03 15:16

Thanks guys for all the great feedback :) @vulpem that's probably the nicest thing anyone has said to me :)) In the post-jam (itch.io) version I gave the 4 most important commands. Not to go all academic, but.. (Spoilers)

@gonutz The true rate of female-on-male abuse is actually around 20% ([National Incident-Based Reporting System](https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Sherry_Hamby/publication/259918579_Intimate_Partner_and_Sexual_Violence_Research_Scientific_Progress_Scientific_Challenges_Gender/links/54e7613a0cf277664ffa6779/Intimate-Partner-and-Sexual-Violence-Research-Scientific-Progress-Scientific-Challenges-Gender.pdf)). Besides, the point of this game is to make you feel helpless - in this case, a trial for a male-on-female abuse case is optimum, because men are more likely to be charged for abuse than women ([Carney et al. 2007](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/222426549_Women_Who_Perpetrate_Intimate_Partner_Violence_A_Review_of_the_Literature_With_Recommendations_for_Treatment)).

@mr-houdini - thank you so much!! :) I understand bipolar is a mood disorder. I based this off of a true story of a friend I know. Bipolar may not cause changes in personality, but it can cause people to do things they never would otherwise, which is why medication is important. Also, female perpetrators of abuse are more often to have personality dysfunction or mood disorder ([Henning et al., 2003](http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0886260503253876)). Note: Or.

mr-houdini 2017-08-03 15:53

@angela-he Alright! A friend of mine has this disorder as well, and we discovered that people use to mistaken the consequences of it. It can be dangerous for the person but not likely for the people around.

Thank you for answering!

jusw85 2017-08-03 17:41

The visuals were amazing! I think it would've helped if we could skip past text or jump straight to certain choices so we didn't have to keep typing and replaying the earlier segments over and over again.

angela-he 2017-08-03 18:18

@mr-houdini Ah I see. You have a point. When I get home from work I'll revise the narrative so it's less stigmatizing. Thanks for being respectful :D

shito 2017-08-03 22:22

Wow, really impressive entry. Would not have thought that such a level of polish is possible during a game jam. The art is just stunning. The case was very interesting, I really wanted to solve it while playing.

From the gameplay it reminded me a little bit of Event 0, where one also needed to enter commands. Also would have liked if theme was more visible throughout the game.

All in all really well done. :)

samhunny 2017-08-04 07:13

I cannot stop playing this! I HAVE to know what really went down. Let me just say 3 things: Love your graphics, love the gameplay more, and love the story mostest. I connected with the idea that you and your client were running out of power/control in the situation. I know that a lot of male abuse victims don't get help, so I really connected with that story, and I just love this so much. I would totally love a whole game just like this. Additionally: holy hell, props on this being a compo, too!

baski 2017-08-04 07:58

For first LD this is freaky awesome. Good luck with this, it has future :) Thank you for your game <3

jaimuepe 2017-08-04 11:01

Loved the graphics and the mood overall. Not really a fan of this type of games, but i gotta say it's a great game nevertheless.

theflyingkeyboard 2017-08-04 20:14

Really nice game, seems to be very polished. Interesting idea, style reminds me Remember Me a little. Amazing graphics and particle effect. Very nice mood in the game. One of the most polished games I've played so far. Great Job!

zenmumbler 2017-08-04 20:24

That is some amazing art and music produced over a weekend. I am seriously jealous. Got to figure most of it out with just a little help ;) Bravo.

2017-08-04 22:30

Great job! I played a little bit for my channel. Congratulations, I'm super impressed by how little time it took you to make such a pretty, intricate game! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo5S5yw0ZcM

eternal 2017-08-05 10:19

Awesome game.I loved the visuals and soundtrack. I want to explore all the different things I could do to find the end. I can't believe the amount of polish you have managed to accomplish in 48 hours. Congrats :)

linus 2017-08-05 11:22

Incredible visuals and music. It was really fun trying to come up with different things to do and write in different keywords to see what effect they had. I can't believe you made everything in 48 hours that is just amazing and it was your first Ludum Dare too :D

At first I didn't realize what to type so I opened the walkthrough which was a really good thing that you added so people can still complete your game. The connection to the theme was not at first obvious but I realized the game is supposed to be played many times in order to get the ending, reminds me a bit of Life is Strange.

I didn't pickup on all the things in the introduction so maybe having a notebook or something where you small hints would be written could have been useful but that is just a minor detail.

Amazing job and I hope to see you in the next Ludum Dare, Angela :)

badly-drawn-rod 2017-08-05 15:54

Thought provoking! It is not common to find a meaningful game that's actually enjoyable to play (note enjoyable - fun would be the wrong word). I really liked the rewind-time mechanism, where you kept having to try again and again to get the information that you needed. It was a little frustrating sometimes, searching for the right word, but ... damn, this was powerful. This is a game that needs a wider audience and I hope that it finds it.

shell-pirate 2017-08-06 11:32

I liked it! The art was phenomenal especially for the compo and the music was pretty good as well. The gameplay was nice and I liked in particular how you could find out information on one run then use said information in the next one. If I had to critique I'd say making the whole thing more forgiving or maybe limiting the player's freedom would be good, since when presented with a blank box to write anything in it gets a bit overwhelming. [SPOILERS] I say this because, for example, I found out that you could distract his ex by talking about sad things but none of the keywords you'd think to type in the 'What do you distract her with?' box seemed to work (talk, sad, speak, etc.) I might just be being dumb, of course. [SPOILERS] Overall though, this was a really impressive entry with a lot of depth so good work!

peter-sheehan 2017-08-06 18:39

The art was absolutely beautiful, but there were some problems with the actual gameplay. I was honestly really unsure of what to put in the box and though the question mark showed some options, I would have liked to have a selection at first to know what I could and couldn't do (or say). The fact that I ended up needing to use the walkthrough reaffirms that options for the dialogue would have been more effective.

sonicgrey 2017-08-08 06:28

It’s not true! It’s b******t! I did not hit her! I did naaaht. Oh hi Mark.

I had a bit of a hard time thinking about what to write but in the end I've managed to get a few endings i was satisfied with...Oh and also you've got a new subscriber :D

jimbly 2017-08-09 00:25

Beautiful! You did an amazing job on the art, and are clearly a master of your tools!

kr4ft3r 2017-08-11 20:03

Oh yea that girl with the red hair... I'm not sure if there is a way to save the client, he seemed not in the mood to admit the truth. Very nice, tho not much related to the theme, or I just didn't get far enough to understand connection, keep up the good work. I'd like to see you make something longer, this was quite enjoyable.

patrickd3121 2017-08-12 08:45

Really loved the concept of the game! Audio fit really well and art was fantastic. I really enjoyed playing it!

ethan-kennerly 2017-08-13 01:16

6 stars for graphics! When I tried an inappropriate input and it was accepted I felt a bit giddy. I would continue to play this if I had a clue about how to uncover more facts about the case and which words mapped to which actions.

kiirohanabi 2017-08-15 22:21

OMG

These graphics, the audio... No words from me haha

About the gameplay, I felt like I was playing a mix of Her Story and Life is Strange, and I really enjoyed it, the subject is interesting, not too cliché, and the interpretation of the theme is really good!

There is certainly things to improve at some points but the game is already quite clean for an LD entry. And I think the bug that block you in the game (no user interface) with hitting enter or space is still there ^^'

I hope to see and hear more about you in the future!!

nnnikki 2017-08-16 10:45

My favorite part is the ability to fart. XD

valphera 2017-08-16 13:49

I'm impressed it's a really good looking game, well polished, and the gameplay is strong too! Probably my favorite entry so far, good work!

terribly-awesome-games 2017-08-17 02:07

Beautiful work on this game! I had a great time playing it... I think I figured out a pretty cool ending so I'm happy with my experience. The game really makes you feel like a sleuth... fun!

randomphantom 2017-08-18 11:33

The art style is fantastic and the audio is sweet. I'm not a fan of the having to randomly type words to hope that the game is smart enough to parse my ideas though, and having to consult a walkthrough and make wild guesses does take away quite a bit from the game and fun part of it though.

franklins-ghost 2017-08-19 13:22

The art in this is fantastic, so impressed at how much nice art you were able to get in and the music in this compliments it so well. Did struggle at times trying to figure out what to type but impressed at how many different results you were able to get in. Such a polished entry for a first Ludum Dare, congrats.

alvatross 2017-08-20 17:27

Very different and interesting, I ¿resolve? the case and it was mindblowing. Congrats!

sempra 2017-08-21 20:47

sempra 2017-08-21 20:48

Wow ! Such a great entry ! Congratulations to you for this one. I'm stuck in contemplation *,* 4 times sorry for bugging tho xD

joshyoshkenoshi 2017-08-22 14:08

This is an incredibly sophisticated entry. The artwork is beautiful, the music really helps to suck you in to the story, and the writing is sublime. Further, I really love the mechanic of only being able to choose a single action on each play through! However, I did encounter a bug on a couple of occasions whereby, after I typed an invalid action, the input box wouldn't reappear, requiring me to exit the game and start it up again.

ezaudiolabs 2017-08-22 15:16

Amazing entry! I wish I could give you 10 stars in mood, because this is by far the most immersive game in LD that I've seen - the art, music, way you approached the theme, every element seems to connect with each other in a really smooth and subtle way, making the whole experience really awesome.
