LD39 — Running out of Power

Fukushima Robot by SoKette 2017-08-02T19:47:01Z

``` $ ./LD39 Called from /usr/share/haxe/std/neko/_std/EReg.hx line 200 Uncaught exception - load.c(237) : Failed to load library : ./regexp.ndll (libpcre.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) ``` You should ship pcre with your build. I have it installed, but version 3 sounds too ancient.
Fukushima Robot by SoKette 2017-08-02T20:31:36Z
@gagapete btw I use arch, thanks.
This is a brilliant and engaging game! Pixel art is great, bfxr was put to a good use, and energy mechanic along with warp worked out great and made the game.
Geralt's secret powersource by Sublustris 2017-08-01T20:03:19Z
Graphics in the thumbnail caught my eye, but the humour sold it for me. The only thing I'm concerned about is that you want to make a post-compo uncensored version and sell porn games on Patreon.
Inferno by Megalink 2017-08-04T10:17:39Z
The concept is old as the world, but it's an endless source of enjoyable games, and Inferno is no exception. It needs a native Linux build.
Power Outcold by Moaz Ashraf 2017-08-01T21:36:31Z
A nice little puzzler, but it ended too soon and I starved for more.
No idea how libraries work on Java.
Power Crisis by Gulyasarni66 2017-08-02T11:51:55Z
>Hi! What OS are you running the game on? I could only test it on windows, so i’m not sure if i can help you.
@gulyasarni66 Linux. You're probably not shipping lwjgl with the build, or not linking it properly. Again, I have no idea how it works on Java.
Messages In The Void by Olowynd 2017-08-02T11:21:15Z
Good job. Five stars for mood and gfx. Art is brilliant, and so is the story; bonus points for multiple endings. If I had to complain about something, it would be the first few minutes when nothing was happening and I was just running West and replying to texts. The Frenglish was noticeable, albeit it wasn't that much of a problem.
LAMBDA-DASH by Flatgub 2017-08-02T09:56:38Z
Shame it doesn't have a Linux build. Wine doesn't see my 360 controller.
Decaying Card Game by filippy 2017-07-31T15:51:01Z
A bit addicting, but I can't tell you how much I've played because there is no tracking, no score, etc. Graphics could have been better~~, and the gameplay is heavily RNGesus-based (there are these affect-everything-but-the-corners thingies which are overpowered, but on the other side you drop cards with 1-2 tiles AoE),~~ but I liked it.
EDIT: I didn't know about the card degradating before; it makes sense now.
Solar Miner by mrboxbox 2017-08-02T10:56:21Z
Better than Minecraft. I love how energy was implemented.
VIS by Hackingroelz 2017-08-03T16:03:33Z
After some time my delta money just goes crazy and changes values +/- values frame by frame. Otherwise it's a fun concept and has potential.
Plasma Arena by red-fan-games 2017-08-01T16:01:34Z
Now I need to buy Devil Daggers...
Bonus points for embedding a yames video.
Keep 'Em Alive! by mrerdalural 2017-08-05T12:51:42Z
Lack of music is fine and suitable. If you were there irl as the nurse, no one would tune in some horror tracks. It's more atmospheric this way. The best horror is the one without music, because you don't know when you should be scared.
I enjoyed the game. I only wish I could throw Susan MacGregor into that generator, but sadly I could only pick up zombie corpses.
Defend Home: Mars by sgt3v 2017-07-31T21:28:25Z
Great execution! The graphics are incredible and the concept is good.
In overall it's too easy. I was just standing in a corner sniping enemies on the other side of the map, and picking up ammo drops (health drops were unnecessary). Also, maybe it's an illusion, but strafe seems much faster than forward/backward movement. The weapon range and accuracy should be decreased in my opinion.
It's fun to play and very solid, especially for a first try. An LD game is rarely well-balanced, so you shouldn't be very much concerned about it.
The Stonemont Chronicles by zedutchgandalf 2017-08-02T09:41:01Z
Screenshot from 2017-08-02 11-36-07.png We have a null pointer exception, let's wait this one out.
Having spent 400 hours on Paradox strategies, I enjoyed Stonemont just as much, but it felt repetitive with the church event hitting every three days.
Spacy adventure by egordorichev 2017-08-02T11:59:13Z
So many particles. Didn't know what was happening, and hadn't known that something this fun could be done in this Pico-8 thing. Nice.
Rocket Rescue by automatonvx 2017-07-31T21:06:25Z
The graphics are simple yet eye-catching, especially the death animation. As for the gameplay, it's hella hard with this jetpack delay. It's the thing that turns the difficulty from 1 to 11. I don't know, I start with so many lives, on the other hand I can't go past level 4. It's fun and annoying at the same time, and eclipses the actual enemies. Still, the delay is a tad bit too long and some spike moments are just about lucky timing.
Zombies 'n Kebabs by alaah 2017-07-31T16:02:32Z
>Tried the windows version and got generic windows messagebox with : https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2PhbR7agvTGMGZPU09vWmE4Qzg too bad i love ghosts and goblins
I always have to screw up static linking on Windows. Working on it now; thanks for reporting it.
Zombies 'n Kebabs by alaah 2017-07-31T20:00:39Z
Both builds should be working now. I apologize for the failure; I know now NEVER to build win64. -static just didn't do anything on my 64-bit compiler.
>It was hard to launch it ! You forget to say that the Linux build have dependencies (libtmxlite in my case, but perhaps I have already some others dependencies installed in my PC).
Only SFML and tmxlite. They are now both included in the lib subdirectory (I did forget about tmxlite in the initial release, lel), and run.sh will automatically adjust ld_library_path. Big thanks for getting this to work despite the issues!
It's taken a while, because I had to download the entire 32-bit toolchain. And there was a new GoT episode. plz.png
Zombies 'n Kebabs by alaah 2017-08-02T10:25:00Z
Thank you all for your feedback. It should have been more precisely specified that you have to kill a boss zombie on the right side of the map, and portals are activated with jump. I'm glad you like my pixel art!
@essell Lack of air control is very much intended and it's one of the main reasons GnG made a name for itself as a horribly difficult and punishing platformer. Unlike my game, it allowed to turn back while jumping, but I don't think it'd really change much.
@bartol44 I agree I didn't balance energy as much and I didn't have time to implement energy restoration. I'd make a full balanced version with it in mind, but I don't know if people would play it.
Zombies 'n Kebabs by alaah 2017-08-02T13:29:40Z
@zelos @milano23 @catbutt Thanks again for feedback. I'm working on pushing a post-compo version that will fix these issues.
@simonhutchinson Sorry, no chances. It's done in SFML and I don't have a Mac.
Zombies 'n Kebabs by alaah 2017-08-02T18:38:04Z
@olowynd Thanks for trying the v2! As for the boss, my strat is to stay near the river until he comes for me first. But it's fluid. Kebabs might be spawning at a too frequent rate.
@reggnos Thanks for playing! > a thing that would really make the game better is not let enemies hit you when they are spawning that is really annoying.
This is a known issue and was fixed in the v2. >And I just wonder why is the game not called zombies and ponies
Ghosts and Goblins was called so, because, among other enemies, you had to fight ghosts and goblins; the game wasn't called Ghosts and Sir Arthur.
Zombies 'n Kebabs by alaah 2017-08-03T15:36:10Z
@theflyingkeyboard @ex3d0 Thanks for feedback.
@deke Thanks for kind words. The game's codename was Kebabs 'n Spaghettis, because the main character moves like spaghetti. The truth is, I haven't read any tutorials regarding animation.
The only MLP in-joke I could think of is the fact that the "armoured" version depicts [Snowfall Frost](http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_ponies/Unicorn_ponies#Snowfall_Frost).
The Lunar Invasion by MCjammydodger 2017-08-01T11:23:04Z
Pretty easy once figured out, but it's so much fun and creative. There's a lot of stuff to do. Would've been more replayable with a bigger shop.
Pathjumper by mrnyarlathotep 2017-08-01T15:25:56Z
Mmm, web only? Unity WebGL is hella sluggish, but I could run it.
At first I was confused, because no enemies were spawning. Then I got swarmed, lel.
It's a nice shooter with good gfx and multiple options to spend energy. If I had to complain about something, it would be lack of timer/scoring. And I understand the lack of soundscape, but you should've at least made a shooting sound; it's 5 minutes in bfxr. Good job in overall.
Phelps vs Shark by kovareka 2017-07-31T15:34:10Z
Some nice art here. I had to download the client because the web version lacked a half of the textures.
I wonder what the farmer did after watching GoT.
DraBot by gil4 2017-08-03T21:35:56Z
Some of my thoughts: * While graphics are outstanding, everything seems dead, especially the enemies with guns. With limited time, you often need to know when to sacrifice sprite quality for animation fluidity. Of course you're post jam, so you can only go forward from this point. Myself, I made spaghetti animations, so maybe I should shut my mouth. * From a new player's perspective, [this is how the difficulty curve would roughly look like](https://i.imgur.com/w45hMgg.png) and it's not a good thing. The red tanks are arguably the most tough to deal with, because you need specific positioning to kill them (they're the only ones to outdps you, and ranged attack isn't much of a deal on such a small arena) and the wizards are no threat at all. Their order of appearance should be logically swapped, if you ask me. * Judging from other comments, the game has music, but it did not work on my Wine. You opted out of an audio score, but you apparently provide a foreign bgm.mp3 track; maybe it's an issue with an evil closed fileformat, as the other sounds are wavs. Please refrain from using mp3 in any public released, ever; Vorbis and Opus are better and open compressed formats. * While at it, you could hold to the tradition of indie developers and make a native Linux build. Pretty please. emoji.png * SFX is honestly so obnoxious that I had to mute it. The akward, periodical attack sound (with a constant attack) takes the cake. Again, you opted out of it, so it's probably and hopefully a set of placeholders. * There should be some randomness and proceduralness, or checkpoints. I timesinked about twenty minutes into this game ~~and still spent more than that writing this wall of text~~ but it soon started feeling repetitive and tedious speedrunning to the boss through so many waves and having memorised all patterns. * Having made a GnG clone, and having been absolutely mocked on LD37 for "bad controls", I more than understand your reply to people complaining about slugginess/hard controls. Please keep it as it is, because it's great in its current state. Expand the game around *your* concept, and don't ruin muh skillcap. * The hell are all these Android and iOS widgets in the data catalog? It weigths 850 KiB, so not a big deal, but it's funny.
Of course a comment wouldn't be complete without a few words of delight and admiration. Nice, unique gameplay, astounding graphics, mainstream but nice interpretation of theme, et cetera. Wish you the highest of places and a Greenlight ticket, and sorry for being too verbose and my bad angielski. TL;DR Linux build or riot.
Powered By Coal by LiquidBrain 2017-08-01T15:03:25Z
I could see it in front of me. My 19th century self being a local businessman, capturing children from the capital's main train station and sending them to coal mines and tool factories. Coal was the currency. It was my life. I was swimming in it; people looked with grief at my black skin, but it only made me stronger. For these fifteen minutes I managed to forget about the real outer world, thinking only about producing more and more coal. My banks were filled with this strange O resource which I knew very little about, but it helped me reach my final goal. I fulfilled my 19th century grandpa's dream of leaving this old country. My long-cherished hate for coal, born from Upper Silesian Industrial Region's air and 2011 Minecraft horrors, was finally cured.
8/10, good job, but you should put a tl;dr of the tutorial on this page.
Wodewick, the grumpy monster by winniehell 2017-08-01T21:44:04Z
Wow, me_irl has been finally expressed in the form of a game. Just kidding, no one loves me.
Grab my five stars for humour.
GLOW by abductedPlatypus 2017-08-03T14:52:30Z
Linux build doesn't have a data folder, and you're shipping two 30 MiB executables; opt out of the 32-bit one completely.
Space Shooter by Chris_Grassi 2017-08-02T18:52:37Z
From what I know you are strictly forbidden to use existing assets such as this skybox from Unity store. You can use existing sound samples if turn them into your own music, but that's it. This is compo.
Also >Ludum Dare 39!
Ludum Dare 2.0398×10⁎⁶ will happen in 6.799333333×10⁎⁔ years. Did I miss a time machine invention?
Game's fine, but camera needs a rework. There are many generic shooters in LD39 and this one stands out mostly with the art, which is of a questionable origin.
Recharged by EX3D0 2017-08-02T20:13:49Z
Mmm, Snake without a snek. Simplicity. SFX was good, but gameplay could use more content. Energy was implemented in a weird way. I scored every drop but still ran out of energy after 1:22 and after 1:08.
No Sorcerer's Sky by TheFlyingKeyboard 2017-08-02T20:28:41Z
Czeƛć. Make sure to include resources in the hud instead of hiding them. Dobra grafika.
THIRST by Togis 2017-08-03T21:57:50Z
Best LD39 game I've played so far.
Escape! by Damoy 2017-08-02T15:50:00Z
TFW I had to write the comment three times, because ldjam.com kept throwing me back to the frontpage without warning; thank you, PoV.
What at first glance seemed to be an optimisation puzzle soon turned out to be a pattern-based bullet dodging game, and it's not a bad thing! It's interesting how, despite the same mechanics, different levels gave various gameplay styles. Up-down only shooting was a brilliant idea and difficulty was just right. I gave up on level nine, because I had no solution to the leftmost enemies.
Please add the same build as Linux and macOS versions, as jars will work on them just as well. Thanks for making this!
Lantern by Kaban 2017-08-03T20:29:27Z
Great mood and atmosphere built upon an astonishing sfx and gfx base, but the gameplay is too simple and mobilish. Some character movement, map and goals would've added some depth.
Fall of Raphael by fangzhangmnm 2017-08-03T15:11:44Z
A very fun puzzle platformer with nicely done aesthetics and interesting mechanics. Needs a tad bit more checkpoints, though. Audio was wayy too annoying and distracting for a puzzler.
Save The Day ! by juan 2017-08-02T10:43:41Z
Don't ever distribute a Linux build in rar! tar.xz, tar.bz2, tar.gz, even zip, just not rar; it's a shitty and closed format.
It's a nice simple asteroid game. It gave me a music staff impression and I'd really love it if was a G-clef instead of a cliche spaceship, dodging the notes of a Beethoven symphony. Wouldn't have anything to do with energy, though. Nevertheless, it was fun to play while it lasted, but why didn't you go for the compo?
>(And take a look at the sources if you’re interrested! )
I'm not looking at 170 MiB sources, it sounds scary.
BAT-BATTERY by cenullum 2017-08-03T15:21:44Z
I don't get the idea. I have to run with the battery and predict where the next one will be? Sounds harsh. I liked the gfx and sfx, though.
Plug Me by hav24 2017-08-03T22:14:26Z
I envy your level design skills; it's what makes this game. The battery in the middle is an interesting mechanic; the theme interpretation is mainstream, but the platformer itself is not, thanks to it. I also love how the game mocks you on how much you suck. **10 killing spree.**
I 404'd with 77 deaths, kthxbye. Thanks for making this. I had plenty of fun.
TrappedWithAI9000 by werlar 2017-08-01T10:42:29Z
Good concept, bad execution. I fell off but could still move to the right and explore the level. Graphics are clearly low effort mspainted. Overall it feels unpolished. And come on, it's Unity; you're one click from a Linux build.
HE BEAT HER. by Angela He 2017-08-01T21:21:15Z
Screenshot from 2017-08-01 23-19-09.png
The data folder is right there, but whitespaces in filenames probably don't help.
Trap in the dark by azziliz 2017-08-03T16:52:12Z
Pretty simple memo maze; interesting concept, nice, old-school but static art, and a good timesink. Difficulty seemed to be incrementing, and that's nice. For 72h and two people, you did have time to make these traps work, though.
Magic Power by Egor Piskunov 2017-08-01T21:51:32Z
The humour is pretty *dry*. It's a fun shooter with actually nice programmer art. Good job.
Hyper Battery Girl by Deke 2017-08-03T15:52:35Z
Looks promising, but it doesn't have a Linux build, and I can't get my 360 controller to work on Wine. I did rate sfx and gfx; they're great.
ULTIMATE PROSELYTISM & MIRACLES SIMULATOR 2017: THE MOVIE THE GAME by Reuh 2017-08-03T16:36:18Z
Publishing a deb and calling it a Linux build is absolutely, disgustingly racist, and I must have opted out to win32 Wine.
Game's humourous and well thought. Graphics are obnoxious in a surprisingly positive way. I had troubles triggering the tree miracle in the platforming part, and I couldn't find a way to activate the one on the beach.
Battery Low by krishnasism 2017-08-01T05:44:56Z
It took we a while to get working, but it wasn't a waste of time. It is fun, unique and hard as hell. Game within a game concept worked out well, and it's probably the closest literal theme interpretation possible. I'd say your phone needs a new battery, but they're unchangeable these days.
It's unfortunate that it's a jam entry, but I understand your situation; myself, I couldn't do LD in April because dorm.
QRTTNBPBYTROAYALID! by Pip Turner 2017-08-01T10:56:57Z
All animals are equal... and thus people are hamsters. Good job.
Character Building by Badly Drawn Rod 2017-08-03T22:33:54Z
I won in my first try. Then I randomed a few runs and it turned out it hadn't been such an easy feat. It seems to be about balancing minus points around the three "resources" until the tv event comes up. I enjoyed it a lot and had plenty of inner misanthropic laugh. Retro music was suitably atmospheric.
You're right Pico-8 was not the best idea. Text was barely readable and you probably wasted a lot of time on these pixels. You could have made a text terminal game and spent the saved time on an even bigger set of questions. Nevertheless, it's definitely turned out nice as it is, and better than one can expect from a mere 128x128 canvas.
Night Driver by nbitsstudio 2017-08-01T16:36:12Z
Exception 39: Core Molten by PanDorfa 2017-08-02T19:34:35Z
Instructions unclear or I'm missing the point. You're marking fire as energy boost in the tutorial area? And you're one of these Unity devs who don't bother exporting a Linux version, which is sad.
The attack of Dr.Evil by PhasedEvolution 2017-08-02T19:56:54Z
Nice to see a fellow low level gamemaker in this dangerous ocean of Unity games. It keeps it simple, it's fun to play and it's polished. Shame it's a jam entry, and you seemingly haven't done the assets, but music and graphics were still nicely chosen and put together.
Lategame is calculatable yet so chaotic. You can be left with 2 fields and straight up win the game from that turn. Really unique and engaging entry.
The King's Efforts by cirno 2020-04-20T13:24:54Z
Fun little text game. I was disappointed bribe was only a one-time ability. The riddles are relatively too difficult.
Keep It Alive by danman9914 2020-04-20T20:33:31Z
I also thought the shoelace was gonna be a timing minigame, but I don't see the problem if it is almost instant anyway. The intro felt too long, but the ending more than made up for it. I have nothing more constructive to say; this is pretty much a flawless submission. Thank you for sharing it, Daniel.
Junior Juggle by miltage 2020-04-22T22:10:48Z
I think your game is harder than mine. Past 9 items I suddenly feel the only way to continue is running an autoclicker. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it a lot, especially the art. If I could suggest something, I wish I could see the whole room with the ceiling.
And... Even with the note in the description, I don't want to know how you made the SFX.
@tadeas-paule That was my intent. My only regret is that the restart doodle might be difficult to interpret. If I make a post-compo version, I will add a floating text above her head whenever she's been crying for several seconds.
Clicking (patting) the head three times does the trick, @jpv. I'm aware the drawing isn't clear enough and I apologize for that.
Inertia and gravity are brutal, but that's the whole point (I'm sorry). It was fun once I grasped it. I became a pianist.
What I disliked was that the border was outside of the viewport.
Tetris Life by jpv 2020-04-21T17:35:44Z
I enjoyed it. Tetromino inertia felt slightly too strong and I could discard all red blocks by throwing them off screen and locking them (I see you fixed it in the post-compo version, though). Also I don't know if there's a hidden time limit or another loss condition, but I lost twice out of nowhere. I also didn't understand when and why the old tetrominos are supposed to disappear. And finally, you really should spend some time on optimization because I had 30-50 fps.
Those are all my concerns; I hope they'll help you improve the game. I really loved the idea and overall execution.
Morose by 100th_Coin 2020-04-22T18:52:04Z
So I was also stuck against the dark plant. I eventually couldn't even place a plant on the left and middle spot. It's a shame, because it's a fantastic compo game that feels like a 3-man jam game. It's as quality as Danman's games (it's the best compliment I can give to anyone), just with technical issues. I'm clicking follow in case you release a post-post-compo version.
A Meatball by Slowpoke 2020-04-20T19:59:08Z
I think the player should tilt the platforms instead of moving the ball, like in the Mercury series. Then, paired with an analog control, it would be incredibly smooth. Arrow keys are hard to use, especially with the camera tilted by 45°. Thanks a lot for making this game.
Keep It Alive top-down shooter by kkrac 2020-04-21T18:54:28Z
You got me really engaged by the final boss fight (the previous 3 damage sponges took a bit too long though). I think it would work really well with twin-stick controls on a pad, the current mouse aiming is really uncomfortable. I especially like the hp=ammo mechanic as it forces me to calculate my attacks better, and the screen shake. Good job
Cloudy With A Chance Of Pain by ProdigalSon 2020-04-25T01:04:16Z
You absolutely nailed the controls (though what I loved, ctrl/shift+LMB, seems to be post-jam). Only two buttons, no bs, straight to the point gameplay. It's a perfect jam entry in this regard.
Graphics are nice and consisents and sound design is one of the best in this event. My only concern is that fire seems to spread too fast, but maybe it's just me.
Fire by barret907k 2020-04-22T00:36:00Z
Pressing up and then right does a vertical jump. Overall all movements felt delayed by a second, maybe because of too much inertia. I liked the fire animation.
Silly Fluffy Bunny by Jiri Hysek 2020-04-20T14:58:30Z
I managed to kill myself in the first level, but then it was smooth sailing. Really superb game; graphics, Morning Mood cover, sfx, pacing all on point. The only thing I felt was missing was a button to speed up the time.
I agree with the others that the idea is wondrous, but the consistent pixel art, and especially the spectre design, was my highlight. Wish there was more replayability to it.
Constance by Oakwarrior 2020-04-30T00:20:42Z
You're winning the mood category. The art direction, voice acting, sound, probably overall best I've seen this event.
I like games where the main character is insane (I have to finish Senua).
Like other commenters said, map design is a bit lacking (3 same-ish platforms, one way to access the home). Walk animation is a little whack, but I'm terrible at it myself. It's an OK stealth game, but I believe this core loop would work better in 3D.
There's a funny little bug: if a bystander wakes up right next to you, the "hey you" "oh god" lines will be played and restarted several times a second.
souvenirs by SoarenDev 2020-04-20T14:40:08Z
Big thumbs up for a figurative interpretation of the theme. The music is incredibly fitting. I love the overall idea, which makes me hate the fact it's so short. It's more than just a game. Well done.
They are corrupted by Nikita Demidov 2020-04-24T17:32:42Z
Nice job.
My tip for your next jam is to sort your priorities, put things such as achievements and cutscenes on the "luxury" shelf and only make them after you're sure your core loop is done and done, fun to play and polished. I'm not saying the intro is not nice (because it is), I'm saying you ended up having less time to refine the gameplay, and combat and movement ended up feeling off. The numbers of stabs are chaotic (I can be 100-0'd within a split second) and hitboxes are meh. Remember the gameplay is (usually) the most important and you can't be overambitious in a prototype festival.
Pacman's Dream by Danielcmcg 2020-04-22T20:40:37Z
Something other commenters haven't addressed yet is that if you flip the button while the character is on top of it, it will still move in the old direction.
READ THE LABEL by winterbeak 2020-04-20T12:33:41Z
The first submission I played this event, and it already hooked me for a solid quarter hour. This is the kind of game I'd love to have on a mobile to practice quick reading and memory. The various paraphrases of death and the baits such as 'loss of wife' really make you pay attention, and the allergen+death mode wakes up the brain in an instant. It's a shame it doesn't have music, but it reinforces my wish to play it on the metro.
On a technical note, I understand why you chose fullscreen mode in such a text-heavy game, but at least let me quit the game without alt-tabbing, like the poster above said.
Finally, another game with voice acting! I wish more jammers did it; it's so fun on both ends. Great job with the art too.
Fleurist by TheJonu 2020-04-24T14:26:25Z
It's a nice premise, although I don't see keeping anything alive, unless the goal is to keep the piggy from exploding. You absolutely outdid yourself with the graphics; they're so smooth and fitting and certainly the strongest aspect of the game.
And while they're so nice and consistent, the music is all over the place. This contrast is bad for the overall mood. I am by no means an authority on music, but for the most part I listened to a 3 seconds loop for h*ck's sake. The most cliche calm piano was probably the way to go.
It's good to have a win condition to provide the players with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Some flash-likes with infinite gameplay use a high score system instead, which is at least some indicator and an incentive to retry. You went with The Sims approach, an open ending, which leaves the player with a question: "Is that all?".
The final thing that bothered me was the economy. Maybe I'm missing something, but I sold a single yellow flower for $30 and my bank jumped from $10k to $15k. Then I sold a tulip for a grand total of $7k. Every transaction was way bigger than the pricetag would suggest. Basic combos should be worth less than the total price ingredients, there should be a timer and monthly expenses, and a market that diminishes the value of common bouquets. I'm sure you're aware of that and just ran out of time.
Let me thoroughly explain why DFG is an atrocious scheme. ASD would have been effortlessly 100 times better because WASD is commonplace, and arrow keys would actually make sense.
DFG don't carry any meaning. Reflex is supposed to be automatic but it always had to go through the conscious parts of the brain. Forget ergonomics; I'd prefer arrow keys and I'm right-handed. If I see an arrow symbol, I immediately know which finger to use after thousands of hours of practice. If I have to interpret D/F/G into left/mid/right every single hit, and after about a minute you give me half a second to do so, I will face a roadblock. Someone suggested colors and it's also a must-have in my opinion; give more triggers for the muscles. You accidentally turned reaction-response into reaction-process-response.
Carrying is Caring by Vederant 2020-04-22T17:45:18Z
Clever title, animal girl character. Instantly unforgettable.
I love the idea, though I think the slowdown is unnecessary or at least too intense (intense enough to feel barely in control, especially using dash). I believe a core loop around catching the jar (ground or mid-air) with the dash would be more satisfying. I would buy fullprice a finished game based around this concept as long as you keep the animal girl.
I think I could multikill a single enemy (the counter dropped by a seemingly random number with every kill, and I certainly hadn't killed everyone by the end). I floated through the stairs above the glowy thing and it was a bit funny. The technical side needs work, but it's a prototype.
Help! I'm Broken! by alessia-ip 2020-04-23T22:29:42Z
I'm confused. Is it over after "Process complete. Thank you"? If so, it should close the game or be a bit clearer.
Uncomplited LD46 Game by Moomka 2020-04-20T12:53:11Z
It's not exactly a rhythm game, but after spending too much time on necrodancer I felt at home. Make more.
Pathing is very nice, but I don't like how diagonal movement is sqrt(2) times faster. And I appreciate the cover of Staying Alive, but it appears to be the only link to the theme.
Tumbleweed by Brenan 2020-04-21T18:16:23Z
You should consider making animated shorts. Graphics, mood(+writing) and sound design are off the scale–I honestly can't believe all the assets were made during the event–but there was not much challenge, and the wind sometimes felt too unresponsive. I hope to see more from you, but polish that game design department. Thank you for making this piece of art.
Square Loves Circle! by meelo 2020-04-21T23:56:34Z
This is my surprise favorite so far. It's very rare to see an LD puzzler with clever level design, and yet you also found time to include fitting, soothing music and a cute story.
One thing that bothered me: inertia, friction, all that quasi-realistic physics. It's too intense. It makes me feel less in control and doesn't really contribute to difficulty.
Vestige by BitPokit 2020-04-24T23:37:14Z
Right after beating a lategame(?) stage (the second one since they mentioned the exit portal), the character just slipped off the platform as it moved, without any input. It was like teleportation. Even though the game is quick and easy, I'm not redoing the whole thing after that.
Prototype graphics work better than expected; they really fit the music and paint a pleasant atmosphere. I love the overall idea because it's simple, unique and enjoyable to play. I'd prefer if there were checkpoints; redoing a thing that isn't procedurally generated is extremely tedious.
An easily fixable problem, although severely affecting the jam, is the key binding. Don't use the LMB without mouse aiming. I'm leaving a follow awaiting a post-jam because it's one of the most fun games this event.
My Mother is a Caravan? by Gideonnf 2020-04-22T18:15:45Z
That's a massive team, and an adequate game. Nice job.
My suggestions would be to actually have the mother targeted (the other commenters addressed it already), have a visible cursor to let me see where I'm targeting the ranged attack, and finally increase stamina regeneration. There's also a tiny oversight: an enemy spawned in the door smoke, unable to move, and the doors remained locked until I figured it out.
Amafufunyana First Jam :D by Brian Suarez 2020-04-21T18:30:30Z
Character animation is well done. The forest is huge and realistic. But I didn't know what I was doing; just running around collecting fruit until I eventually walked outside of the map. While the graphics are well done, lack of (almost) any SFX and constant 5-15 fps didn't help with the immersion.
Social Distancing For LadyBugs by mehrdadsh 2020-04-20T14:25:59Z
Feels like a trip back to the beautiful Flash era. Audio is superb. The music loops after a short pause, but the amazing death jingle makes up for it. I highscored at 19815.
The Offer by TheWinrawr 2020-04-21T23:27:50Z
I'm sure you learned a lot about jam time management, but I can't stress it enough: make sure to reserve at least an hour, even in the first day, for SFX. Basic footsteps with some intense reverb and spider noises would have REALLY bumped up the atmosphere; music wasn't even needed in this game. You nailed everything else, good job.
LD47 — Stuck in a loop
BLOOP by danman9914 2020-10-05T00:33:13Z
It has been a while since you came up with a unique title!
There isn't much to say. You are a master of your craft.
If I had to point something out: it didn't feel that much *eerie* this time even though it clearly had its eerie element. And pretty sure you can safely hit a spear if you move your head back up too early. But God, it's nothing. People who blindly download games and skip intros will think: "this 5/5 game had to be made by a talented 4-man team in 3 days".
Another by kuro 2020-10-06T14:23:37Z
> The gameplay is pretty straightforward, and should be understandable from the in-game “instructions”. Please let me know if it isn’t.
So it kinda isn't; it took me a decent while to understand what was going on (at first I moved *towards* the red crosshairs because I'm dumb) and even longer to realize I can multihit. But once I got a grasp on these two details, I nohitted the whole game.
What else can I say except I don't like QTEs, especially on a keyboard, and yet I enjoyed it. The head attack key should be either a right hand key or all W+A+S+D at once. Sound and graphic design is absolutely flawless and enviable, 6.5/5.
Loop Cultist by udo 2020-10-06T14:47:23Z
This is the coolest entry I've played in this event so far. It was difficult but extremely satisfying to realize what was going on and I always love seeing something new. Don't feel bad about puzzle design because it's good and making a *great* puzzler in a compo is a *feat*. The visuals are gorgeous.
The ending got me confused. I kind of picked omega at random, went through the old theta/iota room and I was surprised that it worked.
gedit is probably what you mean.
@udo Glad you like it. I know it runs on wine; I'm also a daily Linux user, just opted to use MSVC straight away this time because building for Windows has always been a headache.
@caeonosphere Check the game directory! Glad to have inspired you. I wish more compo games had voice acting; it's fun.
Fort Loop by deepnight 2020-10-06T01:32:22Z
"You are stuck in this looping castle. Forever" is a really interesting idea I haven't seen before. You should consider making a full game based on this concept and maybe add procedural generation to it for more replay value.
What you did this weekend is insane. Every jam puzzle game that makes me stop and think for a sec deserves extra credit. Congrats in advance for winning your fourth compo trophy.
Ribbon by 100th_Coin 2020-10-09T01:29:43Z
It ended way too soon but that's a given. Making more content of this caliber in such timespan would've been illegal. The ribbon textures are so detailed! It does look like a fifth gen game.
It's always great to see a new and innovative concept. That said, I don't think it would translate well into a full game because of how weird it feels.
Circleline by caeonosphere 2020-10-06T18:29:36Z
I thought I had it here:
2020-10-06 18_00_54-Circleline by Tom Quinn.png
(I redid it right after)
It's phenomenal. I don't have much else to say. This compo is stacked.
Puzzles 8 and 11 are **awesome**. I always have extra respect for puzzlers because you have so little time to come up with great levels. Expand it with more levels/mechanics and send me a link to the steam store page. 265 clicks 30 crashes
Suggestion: consider adding some sort of crash/error sfx because it feels kinda weird without them. I understand this is a calm game which is why you chose to opt for the road signs instead. Maybe something like a piano note would've worked.
Get in the Loop! by toasteater 2020-10-06T17:59:19Z
This game is perfect. Never before have I played a gamejam entry and thought: "This is flawless. There is nothing I don't like" with an expression similar to Niko's on my pfp. If you had managed it in time for the compo, you would have transcended the concept of jamming and achieved gamedev nirvana. This game is perfect as it is. 131.98s
Paper Planes by SamDemaine 2020-10-05T23:26:24Z
It feels pretty great to play. It reminds me of my first LD game which was also an arena of triangles with super simple yet super effective AI. Except yours have great controls. The AI have only one gripe though and that is they don't migrate enough.
There's a clear snake inspiration though I think it would be more fun if you expanded beyond it and added stages, powerups or multiplayer. A mobile port would also be something to look forward to.
Things you probably know already: it's a shame it doesn't have any BGM and theme-wise I can draw loops but I don't see the "stuck" part.
My highscore is 16.
Right Side Up by TheJonu 2020-10-06T00:16:52Z
I'm a negative person. Here are the issues I found:
* The ultimate wooden level basically clears itself.
* The first steel level is disproportionately difficult compared to everything else.
* Slow-motion has no duration so the optimal strategy is uno-reversing it into fast forward.
* Physics go batshit insane if you use too many explosives or have the box *Stuck in a corner*.
* It isn't always stuck in a loop if I can have it stuck in a corner (in 2-1) and open a different tab. It can lie there forever, sad and forgotten.
* The screen transition frame is visible on non-standard DPI and you know it.
* Box bounces should have SFX.
What I liked: the general idea; I think you may have been inspired by real-life delivery companies. The puzzles were nice to clear except for 2-1 where physics were off. You can easily expand it with more stages and mechanics and make a really fun game. It also fits the finalist theme "Control the world, not the player".
Looponaut by exopunk 2020-10-06T17:35:39Z
Really beautiful. The ambience is top-notch. It's very similar to Hollow Knight in that regard. I'll be disappointed if you don't score >4.0 in Mood. The penultimate level is the hardest; I speedran the last one on 1HP and I like the overall idea of permanently losing HP (or choosing to restart and redo the loop a bit better).
Platforming is sometimes off; I'm certain it doesn't listen to some input after some jumps and it even got me killed once. Also, my personal pet peeve is not having jump height control (longer hold->higher jump) in 2D platformers.
Time Princess by doomerismo 2020-10-06T01:06:01Z
What the others have noted is a general rule: exponential scaling is bad. After I understood what was going on, I built a powerhouse (twoshotting colored skellies with no damage taken)-or so I thought before I was OHKO'd by the fat green guy. If not mild scaling then a fast forward button was what I missed.
Either the regular mobs are too easy from like stage 2 onwards, or the boss is too strong. Some minibosses could have smoothed out the difficulty spike. Amazing game overall and surprisingly engaging for an idle game.
Crown of the Mountain King by vilcans 2021-05-13T12:07:12Z
It's always impressive to see a game made for an old system, especially when you push it to its limits with 50FPS. It's refreshing after playing dozens upon dozens of Unity games that need [redacted]MB of memory to draw a square. I love the level design; it works both ways and it's significantly harder on the way back, giving you time to learn the mechanics. The lack of x axis inertia is a bit strange although it works fine.
I didn't rate it in audio because frankly the beeps got quite annoying pretty fast but I'm not familiar enough with the ZX Spectrum to be able to blame you for it.
There are so many dangers to account for at the same time but I really liked it after I had got the gist of it. Although I still think the mobs with a ranged attack might be a bit overkill. It's impressive how you managed to make full and good-looking 3D graphics in a compo. It could pass as a full game from the shareware era. And I love you for the voice acting. Bubbly by Kaish 2021-05-13T12:40:53Z
Thanks for sharing the game with me. The audiovisuals are top notch and the world generator is quite impressive for a jam game. The gameplay is a bit too harsh, combining low fov with extreme gravity, making many deaths seemingly chance-based (although, granted, my gaming skills are quartered when I'm streaming). I also think the ball should be easier to retrieve.
aphorism.io by JetTheSimon 2021-05-03T02:36:41Z
Blackout by Frasse 2021-05-13T10:03:10Z
This is the indisputable winner of this jam. I'm blunt and good at pointing out mistakes, but this game doesn't have any. You left me speechless for a solid while, as you saw live. It's insane how you animated even some one-time events with rotoscopic accuracy. I don't think I've seen anything like this in a jam, at least not in recent memory.
Ludum Deep thought by Glimmer 2021-05-03T14:23:59Z
Thank you for tuning in; I had a blast. This game has a certain jam charm to it which is not a bad thing but you definitely have a large room for improvement in the art department. The puzzles were pretty good and the lack of real death mechanics makes the game unintentionally relaxing. And of course I love you for using so much voice acting.
Most people put little effort into play+rate as you can see here. The instructions for Lv1 are VERY clear.
Lv7 is not hard because you can just stay in one spot and only shoot nearby monsters. It's not a tower defense.
Overall it's a nice set of minigames but they were too easy and I hated the music. I had a lot of fun though.
Yes, it is a Niko plush, and yes, random characters were intended.
@python-b5 I'm not sure why it throws that. Are you on VB 6.1.26 or 28? 28 was released only 2 days ago so I haven't tested it but it shouldn't have broken anything. I tested it on 6.1.26 on both windows and linux host.
You always deliver something truly magical. Thank you. I had a blast with Stronkey Kong.
Something to potentially improve: the barrel-jumping loop gets stale fast and physics are overall a bit wonky (the barrel can get stuck, wisps sometimes teleport through scaffolding, and falling seems almost linear).
This was funnier than I had expected. I think a control scheme like W/S/Up/Down (to control them simultaneously without switching) would have been more intuitive. It's very difficult.
> This is the Web Version which I unfortunately only managed to upload now, around an hour after the jam submission period ended.
Don't worry about that. You have to upload 1 build until the deadline, and then you can add more builds even a week later (as long as the game is unchanged).
I consider myself good at games but this is 3hard5me (capped at 5k). Maybe I did something fundamentally wrong but it feels very busy even for a dodging game. I played on Firefox and Falkon. I think something might be up with difficulty resetting because after playing for a bit I started getting completely swarmed right after restarting.
The idea of trying to stay as small as possible but not too small is very novel and something that has a lot of potential. It's very well executed, just a bit too random and difficult (or I just need a proper chromium browser).
There's a funny little glitch: score keeps changing if you lose.
Laura Magan by TheBlindEye 2021-10-21T18:58:10Z
The game misses some text on wine, so after picking the certificate it just blacks out. I always love to see an experimental spooky walking sim and this one is no exception. I especially love how the forest looks.
I played Wicked Wilds for 45 minutes. That's a ton of content for a jam game.
Summer Vacation by roryh 2022-04-05T22:53:15Z
Good survival game and too hard for me. The UI is pretty unintuitive and, since I can't read, I didn't realize the game was turn based at first, because movement speed didn't hint at it. It would be better if the make action was bound to e.g. X instead of using Z for everything.
Stage 3 is unplayable. I died two times in a row immediately because a circle spawned right on top of me and I never had a chance to move to the left (this is not skill issue). It would have been a nice touch if there was some continuity between stages; atm if you exit stage 1 on the left hand side, you spawn in stage 2 on the right hand side of the corridor. Checkpoints would have been nice. It's interesting to see a Scratch game because I've never seen one before.
Beat Survivor by pndaa 2022-10-10T13:56:41Z
For a seasoned rhythm gamer this game is too easy, but also surprisingly engaging (maybe because I also suck at top-down shooters). I think it would work better with gamepad controls, but overall I was happy to see how many things you did right. If you decide to keep working on it, I think you're on to a nice 2-dimensional BPM-ish shooter
It's cool to have a choice between weak boons with near-100% uptime and stronger boons requiring a higher combo. I believe upgrades are capped at "incredible" which might be too easy to recover. Another commenter said that losing combo almost certainly means death, but that's really not the case. Right now it's somewhat comparable to a full obsidian set in Necrodancer. More non-combo based (and not permanent) upgrades could be welcome though
A common mistake of "rogue-""lite""" games is balancing their stuff around permanent unlocks. Permanent unlocks are welcome as a gateway for less hardcore players, but the game should be beatable on a fresh save without a hitch, and it is. I think you nailed it!
And of course, audiovisuals are insanely well-made
Awesome game. Each room was exponentially more fun than the previous one. I managed to dodgeroll through a wall in the penultimate room and found myself in the final room. I think it was a bug
I think the general idea of stacking death marks on enemies is really cool, but I don't believe it works very well with Every 10 Seconds. Like many other games this event, it suffers from excessive waiting for the timer to run out. Maybe death marks on the ground should also expire with the timer to incentivize faster gameplay, or maybe the held/used ones shouldn't expire, or maybe the activation mechanic should be entirely different. Just my two cents, deepnight ilu
Exorcist Patrol by PeachTreeOath 2022-10-09T01:50:12Z
I love this combat system. It outclasses the cliche jrpg combat and belongs in a full game. I agree with deprecat that it shouldn't run in a constant loop, although it would no longer be "every 10 seconds". Items need descriptions, and aside from making the engine 100% deterministic it would be a challenge to make sure every item combination would be winnable while keeping the game challenging; maybe introduce a method to swap/sell items. This is one of my fav entries this event
I understand the clock in the bottom left isn't colored by design, but maybe it should? With the locked camera angle it's sometimes hard to see the clock on the ground.
I probably got the blue castle time piece by accident, by swapping out and back into blue, which heavily pushed me upwards.
Cool concept reminiscent of the tree escape sequence in Blind Forest, and a blast to play. The music reminds me of Child of Light. You're at least a top 10 contender, especially in gfx/audio
I thought this was an endless arcade game like icy tower and I set a personal goal of 1k feet. I didn't expect it to be the actual goal. An endless mode with leaderboard could be a thing
1000.png
I thought the game was rigged past 900 feet. Ball generation is very random and chaotic; sometimes you get one right where you land 10 times in a row, and sometimes you don't get any because you quickjumped past them all. You can catch balls mid jump but it's cheesy
980.png
And sometimes there were multiple platforms on top of each other, and sometimes they were very scarce. These platforms were so low I don't think it was possible to move forward unless you latched to an offscreen platform above
750.png
I think world generation could be a bit more pseudorandom, but it's not a big deal
Stellar Sauce by Wheffle 2022-10-03T19:27:27Z
Fun game with a good gimmick, though the web build is stuttery. Jumps could have been better because right now they're pretty unresponsive, and mobs shouldn't be able to shoot offscreen
Find Ten Seconds by dhim 2022-10-03T23:12:13Z
The game turned out really fun the moment I realized I was supposed to stack up the bonuses. I think I played it for longer than any other game this event. I think I played it for longer than 20 minutes till dawn (Steam)
My only complaint is that it's too much of a fruit slot machine. Drops should be more pseudo-random, and all bonuses should stack with themselves (i.e. getting too many carrots or cherries means death)
Far. by Honey Pony 2022-10-12T18:05:38Z
You need like 20 engine upgrades to reach the ending, and most of the time is spent doing the exact same grinding loop. I think you far, far overshot the target distance. Exponential scaling in gaming is a terrible idea 100% of the time; upgrading the engine is completely useless until the very end. You are severely bottlenecked by asteroids , basketballs and wood, while the other resources are useless. But I'm sure you know all of that and just didn't have the time to playtest it properly. You have a solid, polished base for a cute semi-idle game that could be a wonder to play with better balance, more minigames and some kind of a threat mechanic. As long as you remove exponential scaling
OrzeƂ by NoelOskar 2022-10-10T18:57:37Z
Solid platformer. The mechanics are introduced to the player at a perfect pace, the controls are responsive and all stages are polished. It ended too abruptly though; it needed a few more stages. Audiovisuals are awesome for a compo game. Interesting that you drew your character facing the camera in a sidescroller game, but well
Hovering Bird by Xpycm 2022-10-03T17:49:25Z
Props for making an accessible analog game! It's truly a rarity
I took the liberty to backtrack/branch out my moves, but it turns out the player's choice usually doesn't matter or saves no more than 1 turn. My highscore was 5 cards. I think the game is too RNG right now. Being able to pick from a hand of several cards could make it more strategic. Jokers could be wild cards (place them wherever you want)
I couldn't find the information in the rules, but I played assuming that if a card drops on top of me, I collect it immediately
Line Momentum by Itooh 2022-10-15T14:16:42Z
Nice game, but too easy and, probably, not very scalable. You could add more buttons or mechanics and you'd end up with a minimalist quasi-Groove Coaster/Project Mirai, but you'd need fewer loops because 10 can quickly get repetitive. You got some flak for the game being too punitive, but trust me, you weren't even close to fucking up as much as the developer of ADOFAI, and that's a full commercial game with very positive ratings (for some reason). I loved how the visual indicator disappeared after several loops–it really made it a lot more interesting for a visual player like me. I know everyone has their own interpretation, but the theme is nowhere to be found
I really appreciate that you went with Wwise instead of Unity's built-in sound system. I've played commercial Unity rhythm games where devs didn't know what audio middleware even was, and the results bordered on unplayable. That said, there is still a noticeable delay as reported earlier (Linux), so an audio or a grade offset slider would have been nice to have
You have to add some kind of tutorial. For the most part I didn't know what I was doing. Great visuals and SFX
Red and Black's Discommunicative Communication by chitoyuu 2022-10-04T20:35:10Z
The introduction is fine, but I didn't realize it was an introduction. Either way it's unreasonable to expect this kind of game to have a full-fledged tutorial in LD, so it's fine.
The idea of a co-operative duel card game is something I haven't seen before. I like the tradeoff of the draw3 card, but otherwise it's largely about responding yellow to blue and vice-versa, so it could use more strategic depth, maybe with more colors or tradeoff cards. I'm interested in a postcompo
The background art is very nice. Pixel text is kind of hard to read sideways; I thought a blue card said "initiate" but it actually said "imitate". Are all cards level 1 or am I just bad?
I'm not sure what the ending condition is. I had a few solid runs that just ended abruptly.
Last Defense by Pixelydian 2022-10-09T01:58:11Z
You nailed the golden era arcade feeling even down to the sadistic mechanics. I think the inertia is overblown (and unnecessary aside from the final level, but on the other hand the landing mechanic is forgiving), and enemies shouldn't be able to spawn offscreen or move through terrain, but otherwise this entry is pretty flawless and honestly impressive. I was like "no way this has another stage", 3 or 4 times. Controls were hard to get used to; return to shoot is not a common binding
10-Second Magic Artist by vivyhasadream 2022-10-12T14:11:36Z
This it tough to compare to other games, because your job here was to set up a backend and prepare some prompts, and there isn't much else to it. Some prompts are downright bad, for example it should be "The Little Red Riding Hood", not "The Little Red Hat"; such small differences mean the world for Stable Diffusion. I think SD may be misconfigured or the prompts may not be descriptive enough, which was particularly apparent in the amazon rainforest one (I got it twice), but in fairness I haven't played with img2img at all so maybe I'm expecting too much. Prompts also kept repeating, so you should have used a randomized queue instead of randomizing the prompt every time. I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but in fact I love you for going with this idea; it's innovative and fun to play, just rough around the edges
Maudits FantĂŽmes / Cursed Ghosts by Mossieur Patate 2022-10-24T01:30:47Z
I'm sorry I won't return the favor because I'm pretty spartan with my comments. I played the web version, which is probably the older one. I understand your struggle as my game from last year had to be made in 24h
I might be mentally deficient, but the mechanics were not obvious at first. I thought each pacman was supposed to be fed at most once, but then I figured it out and it went on smoothly. Though this is a standard ludum dare "no time to make a proper tutorial", unlike my "have time to make a tutorial and screw it up"
Aiming is a bit ass because of isometric view. Good old top-down would have worked better. The newer version seems to use rectangular tiles, so you already figured that out.
The idea is pretty cool and definitely fits pacman, but also gets boring pretty fast. I had no incentive to play past the 10-th-or-something stage, because it only kept steadily increasing in scale and had nothing new to offer. Either introduce new wacky mechanics as the game progresses (I understand you only made it in half a day, this is just a hint), and make levels scale harder so they feel more impactful. There isn't much point to having 40 levels if each one is basically the same. The original pacman does it, but it isn't good design
Had a lot of fun playing the game
Stormlight Manor by RogueBrain 2022-10-06T01:23:59Z
A game taking place in a manor, in a stormy weather, with lightning striking every 10 seconds. What a peculiar setting! I wish I came up with something similar
It's a cool maze solver with a twist, although the mazes are not very complex. The timer on the sudden death boss may be a bit too long because it spawned when I was in front of the exit to the final level, and I had enough time to wait out most of my problems. I dig the mood; when you get cornered you can feel it. Who was in charge of SFX? They deserve extra credit for the thunder sounds.
The game glitched out after a death, but it wasn't a big deal thanks to the level selection menu. My game used to have a similar problem during development. Guess manors have a natural tendency to softlock on death
Aight, 1.0.1 works. I love the art style, very consistent and effective, and the subtle 3D effect was a great touch I didn't expect. Unfortunately, a ladder disappeared in the room to the right and I think it was a softlock
The gimmick has a lot of potential. Both forms have their strengths, like the chicken is unusable against ranged mobs, but much better against thornies. However, you can often just wait out the form that's more inconvenient at the moment
Aberration by waterfowler 2022-10-11T19:52:33Z
Flawless audiovisuals and a solid loop. Got to /80 when my wrist started to hurt. The amount of clicking required is unhealthy. There should be an autoclicker upgrade, or fairies should have a larger hitbox, or the game should have an accessibility option that doesn't involve clicking.
Love how grapes can only grow on the tree but it took me a while to figure out.
@kristinamay Sorry, Godot Beta web builds can be unpredictable. I would build a native version but Godot doesn't work on my macos VM. Make sure you have hardware acceleration turned on.
I had a third-party report about ships not attacking the plants. I couldn't replicate it for the life of me, but I added a button that bypasses collision-dodging AI in case it happens to anyone else. I also added a button that disables wheat drops since I had another report about low performance past wave 12.
@pincushion I assume you have a 2160p display. Hi-dpi is my bane because I don't have a way to test it. The "solution" would be to reduce the desktop resolution to 1080p, but I'm aware it's too much to ask
The Bountiful by 100th_Coin 2023-01-09T22:29:35Z
My only problem with this game is that it's about farming. You never disappoint, even with an early start time and an epically terrible theme. You packed a ton of content for a narrative compo game, including like a million character sprites. Though at some point mid-game it becomes a bit noticeable you ran out of time.
Also I think you can't buy a seed if you have exactly $1
Fallowtide by Jeremy Ryan 2023-01-10T19:33:26Z
Great game with unique mechanics and tons of polished content for a compo game. The forced discard mechanic is brutal. I once had to discard either a goat or my only two hell cards. I bought a sacrifice, and I immediately had to discard a sacrifice. Meanwhile, I also had a two-tile wheat card for the entire game. The optimization factor stops being important once you get one or two goats, and it's amplified by the lack of a loss condition. It's a fun and relaxing game involving human sacrifice, which is an interesting dissonance!
ZenBox by anstabo 2023-01-11T22:44:59Z
> If your game crashes it means that you’ve won!
I don't know if it's supposed to be a joke, but the game crashed alongside the entire PC. The strain becomes really hard once the tree from the well grows big.
Amazing visuals and concept, but movement in the 3D space was very uncomfortable, and a standard FPP camera would have done much better (or at least screen dragging shouldn't move the camera's XYZ).
Cardwork Cycle by Honey Pony 2023-01-11T19:45:04Z
Another game that takes give or take an hour to beat (on normal, and I'm not going to replay it). I played until I bought all upgrades. The game reminded me why I don't play card video games, because I kept getting fully offensive hands in turns with no enemies and vice versa. The +2 damage card is completely useless on normal and I never used it once; by the time enemies started getting 3hp I already had much better cards. The loop is very nice and relaxing, and my problem with RNG is probably a "me" issue.
You should consider linking to itch because the LD embed didn't work for me.
You made lot of nice pixel art and great audio. You say it's "stupid homemade sound effects" but it's actually some of the best sound design I've seen this event; very "snappy" and satisfying.
The game itself is just your standard Flash-era tower defense, with a lot of extra clicking which I'm not a fan of. I like how plants have to grow for some time before you can use them, but click-mashing them just didn't feel good. Part of the appeal of TDs is getting to watch the sea of particles, and this game doesn't give you a lot of time and opportunity to do that, because your eyes are fixed at the flowerpots and there is hardly any rest time in between waves (a mistake I'm also guilty of).
The game is also too easy with every single wave failing to pass through the first meander, except for Godzilla who survived for a few seconds longer. I made an entire second line of defense and it ended up unused. There's way too much pollen (I had 1k+ at the end), so my APM and the flowerpots were my only bottlenecks. But balancing jam games is next to impossible so it's not a big deal. Those are just some caveats I had, but overall I had a good time playing the game, great job!
The combat wasn't particularly engaging, but traversing the labyrinth was fun on its own. A word for advice for this type of games: add shortcuts such as one-way doors or teleports, especially if the character's movement speed is low, because backtracking through the same corridors can be tedious. I love the music; it's very simple, but it fits the game.
What can I say to you except that you always deliver
If you want some critique: while the puzzle mechanic is unique, it feels kinda random to play and doesn't make me feel smart when I clear it. I found it annoying that you have to point and click on the targets after shooting them, since the game gets paused anyway and it could immediately go into the dragging mode. Finally, the game is too polished so it doesn't quite live up to the comedic genius of The Bountiful
Stork Serenity by Mathstr0fficial 2023-05-03T21:47:30Z
I'm impressed by the graphics. You really made great use of this almost monochromatic palette and alongside the audio you absolutely nailed the look and feel
I'm not sure if there is much to say about the gameplay, although I agree with the previous poster that it wouldn't hurt for the puzzles to be a bit more challenging, even if it wasn't quite the point. Though making good head-scratching puzzles in a compo game is an extracurricular task so don't worry about it
Hexpress by RunicPixels 2023-05-09T19:12:34Z
The music changed and I had no more deliveries, so I think I won...? Did I miss a victory screen?
I love constrained palettes and the whole presentation, and I love the idea of using your delivery to fight–it's such an obvious idea in hindsight but I haven't thought of it before, nor seen it in any other game this event. And to top it off, it's about witches. This game is very smooth and a joy to play
I think isometric view makes this kind of game a disservice. The way you show the player's head behind objects is clever but also feels weird, and it doesn't extend to mobs. 3D would be ideal, but it would be next to impossible to make a 3D pixel art shader as crisp as your sprites, so I don't really have a solution
Artifact by Untitled Studios 2023-05-20T01:19:43Z
Alright, you defeated me at 21level. I may want to try again later as it's currently 3:20. Right when I thought the game was about to end, you introduced a new mechanic. Insane
This is both a successful head-scratcher *and* an impressively polished experience, which is a unicorn on Ludum Dare. My only possible issue is that this kind of puzzler encourages less thinking and more "clicking until it works".
Don't Chute the Messenger by DecadeDecaf 2023-05-20T01:03:37Z
I see a Jiji's Delivery Service-inspired game, I click. I can say the puzzle was pretty good because I was tunnelvisioned on making the big jump back (until I read about gliding in the controls section). I was disappointed to see it was the only puzzle, but you have a good foundation for a game
Haitatsuin no kaeru by kartun04 2023-05-08T23:47:55Z
I got to the credits, so I guess I won. Art and music are splendid–the artstyle of sprites inconsistent at times, but it's really impressive work overall. However, camera moving off the ground when you jump was quite annoying and it felt like screen estate was being wasted. Wish there was a speedrun timer and/or a procedural infinite mode
Beautiful game. The only thing I could complain about is that the boss doesn't play well with a 1-ammo quiver; Titan Souls bosses are beautifully designed around this mechanic, but here's it's just a relatively mindless shoot–collect–repeat.
Extra props for the lack of contact damage. There is only one enemy type, but it works really well.
Ribbon 2 by 100th_Coin 2023-10-20T19:48:44Z
Thank you for the Linux build!
It's is immensely hard for me to write, but this is my least favorite game you've made (the first one I played was Morose, and, before you say anything, I actually loved that game). That doesn't mean it was bad–because of course it's a compo game that outperforms almost all jam games in quality–just that for the first time you haven't wowed me; in part because it's a sequel, probably. I played the game three times (first + speedrun any% + speedrun 100%).
Ribbon, in retrospect, was *really* short ~~at mere 25.6m~~, but the novelty more than made up for it. The captivating thing was its unique juxtaposition of 2D and 3D. Here, this aspect doesn't play a role aside from the two initial puzzles, which is a shame. I understand this is a compo tech demo, and you clearly wanted to include as many mechanics as possible instead of focusing on the good one, but the playability of this demo as a jam game suffers because of it. The latter 3D-only half, the bulk of the game, isn't fun; jumping is awkward and annoying, and extra annoying if the character bunnyhops in an endless cycle if you stand in the arrows, and the star is probably too precise for WASD controls (it would be good with a joystick though). The move to a fixed camera angle made the game more intuitive to control, but at a cost of the 2D view often going completely nuts, and even spoiling secrets at times.
Of course, the production value is top notch and the mix of pixel art with (mostly) low poly 3D still looks great. I have nothing to add here.
Since my comment is negative I should suggest improvements. The problem is, I think the game would work best with some degree of twinstick controls, but this would have been a no-go in an LD game. Maybe even mouse-based movement would work, although that's an idea I haven't thought through. I would mostly ditch the platforming aspect and focus on the puzzles that take advantage of the unique mode switch mechanic, and imprecise movement would automatically become much less problematic. Maybe add some dynamics to the ribbon so that it doesn't twist so much to the point of breaking 2D (the first game effectively did that thanks to its control scheme).
Well, it didn't occur to me that poop was supposed to be gold (even though it's in the first summon's description), and I somehow thought grain was gold. My primary concern was whether the shape was correct and whether two emitting lasers can hit each other.
My second attempt ended on the chimera; I tried rock+mirror+everything, rock+comb+everything, and rock+file+everything, among others. I'm too dumb or some of these puzzles are too oddly exact. I noticed that not only the connections, but also the overall shape, has to match the original diagram, which can be somewhat problematic with the triangular laser because it can be rotated in all sorts of ways.
I.e. the left arrangement won't work, but the right one will. lllll2.png
Well written, not even for a jam game, just in general. It's hard for me to rate a VN (as I don't have a point of reference) but I found it very engaging. The tooltips are an awesome idea. I wish the history interface had profile pictures beside character names because I'm [particularly awful at remembering names](https://thejenkinscomic.files.wordpress.com/2020/05/screenshot-1088.png).
Here's a recording, though I don't think it counts as feedback if the game is a VN. I would have played through the Soulsea Mode if there was save and backtrack functionality like in Ren'Py. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEmrK6-aoR0
POLLY by Spica 2024-04-22T14:11:33Z
Cute and giving off a Child of Light vibe (a great vibe) but it's hardly a game as of now. Even as a prototype there is not enough content to put your mechanics to a proper test. I think pressing Q again to release the wand is unintuitive (would be better if the game instantly detected I have drawn a circle) but it may just be a matter of getting used to. The tree level is beautiful but could have been more visually clear about where the platforms are.
Fathom Pond by Mathstr0fficial 2025-04-23T08:41:34Z
This takes me back because a simple zork clone was one of the first games I ever made. That said, I know very little about the genre. I couldn't reach the ending even with some heavy help from solution.txt. I would have appreciated a "help" and a "map" command in a game like this—I understand that getting lost is part of the experience but some people are just really bad at directions.
Like rbbhn, I don't think I'm in a position to critique this, although what I can say is, the writing is superb and the amount of content is staggering for a compo entry.
Pack by Jeremy Ryan 2025-04-23T09:27:10Z
This is a very cozy entry. You went with a smaller scope this time, and the end result is one of the most polished games I've ever seen in a compo. My only complaint is, I wish there was another binding for the catryoshka, for us trackpad plebs. And I think I suffocated the cat in that suitcase.
This was delightful; I love a good point and click. A few bugs popped up (most notably, the arrow above the stool seems to hate me) but nothing got in the way of beating the game.
The Game&Watch part makes the game stand out without feeling too gimmicky, and although it kinda demands a redraw of each room, you managed to include a lot of rooms.
The amount of spoken dialogue is crazy for a compo game, even for you. I imagine a quick post-compo with subtitles for my fellow ESLs could be a good idea.
Everything about the presentation is amazing and I had a ton of fun playing the game.
The difficulty curve is too harsh; stage 1/3 feels like stage 3/5. The difference in difficulty between the stages isn't that substantial, unless you want to farm the "heart bats" in stage 3 I guess. The player sprite is huge and I still don't know where the hitbox is, and I definitely took a few hits that seemed to have come from nowhere. No iframes in a lives-based game with contact damage feels rough (would have been different if it was health-based). Pressing "Z" to advance to the next stage also triggers a bullet, which activates a red heart bat in stage 3; I don't know if that's intended but it is pretty funny. I really like those hearts in general for punishing spamming. The "continue" button not continuing in an arcade way is whatever for me, but will probably lose you some players. I almost didn't use the X key since it was too gimmicky/unpredictable and thus too likely to activate "heart bats".
Not sure if I beat the game. I got a "05102025.txt" on the virtual desktop, and the source code is 404. I love the music and the tone it gives, still somewhat whimsical and fittingly out-of-place, and yet dissonant. I wish the static mode actually did anything (maybe I missed something?) but I dig this type of horror metagame.
Don't give this guy any more attention, and don't bestow heart karma on him. You may have come here because he commented under your game, or because he has 285 karma at the time of writing–but he didn't play your game, and I'm half-convinced he has never played a single Ludum Dare game other than his own. When he's active, his "ratings given" counter increases by about one every 4 minutes, which is nowhere near enough time to download and play a game, leave a rating and comment–and comment he does:
These comments weren't selected. They were the first 10 comments I encountered, and that didn't take long. You'd be hard-pressed to find a comment of his that doesn't look like that; I've never seen one personally.
Leaving one-liner comments isn't inherently bad, but if someone collects (!! is this a Ludum Dare 58 meta-game?) almost 300 karma in a few days, and every. single. comment is so insubstantial, so empty that it could have been written after merely glancing at a screenshot, or not even–then something doesn't seem right.
My game can take less than a minute to complete if you aren't particularly committed to it, and the end screen has a little request to the commenter, a request which obviously hasn't been honored by Eugenik who only commented "Amazing art!!!." under an experimental mini-game where art is the weakest link.
Opportunists who game the system show up at every Ludum Dare, but Eugenik is a repeat offender that has done this for years. In fact, if you've been around here for some time, you probably recognize him. Perhaps his most egregious comment was "nice humor" under a tearjerker game about playing the piano:
Very cute, and a pretty unique take on the theme. I enjoyed this game a lot.
I think each bag should have had a capacity slightly larger than "100%" so it wouldn't feel so meticulous (and therefore unrealistic); in real life, one would move the bags around, and there would be no need to blow a single leaf across the entire plot just because the closest bag is "full".
LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres
Blob Dungeon by Mikeliosus 2018-04-28T01:02:17Z
*Note: I only played the post LD build. I ain't leaving a score anyway*
I didn't even participate this time and yet I'm here to write a review-lite for the LD game I probably spent the most time with. Likely even more than my own ones. I don't like that it's Unity, but I got my Linux build, so I can't complain.
Right off the bat, I would buy a full version fullprice if you pulled off an "artistic" map. Obviously it'd be dumb to create a non-tiled metroidvania for a jam, but that's what you should strive for should you want to continue working on this one. The overall feel is already hooking; the art style, toned dreamy background and calm ambient music are gorgeous and complementing each other, and to some extent hitting my taste. Semi-abstract background with geometrical touches is something I've wanted to make for a long time and never really succeeded, but right here it looks fantastic.
For some reason it felt a bit like ScarKrow prototype, due to its cute simplicity and LD-ness, and Hollow Knight because of more peaceful ambient, obvious Unity-ness and bugs. The good kind of bugs. Entity/mob design is a 9/10. LittleBigPlanet-like "brain" idea is subpar. I might have a strange affection to bug eyes, but the main character is charming for absolutely no describable reason. Level design is outstanding for an LD game, and delegating it to two people payed off as it took me a healthy quarter of an hour to merely reach the credits, and aside from some bullshit moments the game was satisfying and rewarding with so many bonus areas.
What I didn't like was a lot of quirks with the gameplay itself. Aiming seems to be handled by plain arc tangent or something, and it usually feels like it doesn't shoot where I point it at. Moving backwards is also awkward, but I guess that's a side effect of incorporating an "incompatible genre" and dualstickness. But it sure can be reworked well, but with a controller in mind. Also, jumping with no air control is absolutely horrid; this is so basic and caused several needlessly frustrating moments. Furthermore, I didn't love the lack of map; now, this might be a design decision or a side effect of Ludum Dare, but some sort of navigation, even the most basic one, is necessary in a metroidvania. But a total cluelessness contributed to sorta phasing out my sense of time. Mobs respawn with each room transition, but farming them seemed pointless and unrewarding without any sort of gold/scoring/whatever (another sign of LD syndrome); sometimes walking through them and tanking damage made more sense, especially with deaths not doing much harm. Finally, icicles are a brilliant idea but need some more work to feel smoother (like a constant stream maybe?).
I'm blah blahing about things you couldn't really control and pull off within three days. I may be biased because I mostly rate compo games, but this is truly one of the better LD games and I had a blast playing it. Please keep on going.
My honest reaction: Screenshot_20260509_013900-1.png
I love this kind of arbitrary pattern recognition because it gets your brain spinning both in the short-term memory gear and the creativity gear. The game was more simplistic than I expected but I loved it. It's a good twist on the theme, and just my kind of game. I wish there was unicode support and some kind of typo guard; in theory, this could work as a crazy speedtyping game, but I had to be extra careful and extra slow because the big guy complained I types "asss" instead of "as" (my S key iss a bit broken).
Chomp Radio by alexrose 2026-04-26T18:52:19Z
What I love in this idea of *snake with guns* is the constant feeling of dread in the back of your head as you're aware you can lose even the most overpowered build with a single mistake, hence you can never feel truly overpowered. There's a lot to enjoy, like the upgrade screen being exceptionally smooth (aside from being hard to navigate sometimes), the wide array of towers, the sheer scale of the game, Alex voice acting, etc.
That said, there is something about the game that felt off. Snake having a heavy turn rate made input feel laggy (even though it really wasn't) and, for a distant shmup relative, there was a distinct lack of audiovisual oomph; for example, the towers just turn into dust with no explosion fanfare or even a single sound effect. Then, the actual game aspect is rough around the edges. Towers feel needlessly spongy (might be skill issue), mob spawn rules are *atrocious* and combined with their non-existent pathfinding you end up with those hilarious mob clusters. Having glanced at 100th_Coin's playthrough, I guess the game expects the player to buy enough pulsars, but this feels like a band-aid fix for a game that needed a bit more playtesting. I don't mean to sound too harsh, but you guys are Michelin-star chefs, so I can't help but hold you to a higher standard.
Wish there was a restart button because I softlocked myself, as seen in the recording below: https://youtu.be/vKHrntxbcOs
For Boom The Bell Tolls by pickens-inc 2026-05-05T11:36:19Z
The overall production value is really high for a 48h game mostly made by one person, and I can't get over the voice acting in particular. You're aiming at top 3 audio, and a few years ago it would have been guaranteed. Brilliant.
Gameplay was a mixed bag. This command-based loop can work (and has been used in the past) in turn-based combat or in pure puzzles but real-time 1v1 is kinda awkward, especially with the opponent seemingly not using the mechanic (it's been a few days since I played, but pretty sure one of the bosses casts shield and then attacks in a rapid succession). The slowness of command input necessitates that the solution to each battle has to be simple, or otherwise it would have just been too difficult. But in its simplicity, the solution ends up tedious, as the player has to repeat it over and over, with some commands (heal...) requiring three turnarounds and like 12 keypresses. The bossfights are remarkably distinct, and although not all options given to the player are necessary, the game's "framework" does strike a great balance between simplicity and complexity. I would have probably enjoyed the gameplay a lot more if the bosses just hadn't been so spongy, but that would have probably introduced other balance issues.
I think, in Minecraft terms, that it would have worked better with pressure plates instead of buttons, as it would have turned into a sort of dancing game instead of an odd variation of the first-person shooter.
TAS-as-a-Game is a great and thought-provoking concept but I'm not sure it was utilized to its full potential:
* in the basketball game, it made very little difference compared to the typical restart-from-savepoint trope * in the gamblinator, it was just tedious * in the duck game, it was a red herring * in the bossfight, it was locked
I think the most fun to be had with TAS-ing is from programming impossible movement and breaking the game, but that's not possible in a set of minigames with only mouse as the input. But of course, this is a compo proof-of-concept, and it accomplished what it had set to accomplish. The presentation is top notch as always, and I love how the acapella theme was moved from its usual main menu spot into my inner thoughts. A bit of a bummer the game has absolutely nothing to do with the theme.
If Hammer Golf was a unique take on Tetris then this one is a unique take on Match-3. Love how well-connected the map is; the last puzzle made me go back right to the starting spot, which I find remarkable. The controls felt somewhat finicky at first but it clicked when I realized I had to look at the drone's shadow. Something of note is the puzzle sections are intuitive to control because you usually move one unit at a time, but traversal between the puzzles depends on this twin-stick coordination (unnecessarily), hence a button that would make the drone follow Fillmore when held/toggled would be great QoL. The audiovisuals are impeccable, as expected from you.
No audio because, even though I recorded a full commentary, OBS said "not today". What a bother because the music is what immediately stands out; love how it hops between time signature, samples an android sounds, and how polished it is overall. The visuals are pretty clean too, and the combat animation is just perfect.
It's hard to gauge a hotseat game without convincing another human to play it long enough for both of us to get good. Based on vibes alone I really like it though. The random moveset is novel but might be a balancing nightmare; in particular, a well-timed TARDIS can probably flip a game upside down if it works the way I think it does. Thinking about it, I want this to be a board game with cute 3D-printed cell towers and a deck of action cards. First time I ever wanted a physical copy of a Ludum Dare game.
Smh about naming the game word-for-word after the theme. So uncreative.
This little Contra looks nice and plays nice, though the difficulty should accelerate over time because right now you can shoot everything from below every time with no pressure. Binding to the numpad by default is a bit diabolical in a world dominated by TKL keyboards and laptops. The highlight of the game is the art direction and its surrealness: the viking commando shooting with a telescope, the butt flies, and the colorful onions, I mean the siguls.
Echolocation is a genuinely awesome and unique take on the theme, and it fits the vibe of a dark dungeon crawler. You could have put more focus on enemy variety instead of item variety, as there aren't many opportunities to use items anyway, but this seems to be your first jam, and going a bit out of scope is part of the process. Nice job.
