Hey, thanks! It's really soothing to see a nice comment on the first day after all the work. Good job on your first LD, I'm looking forward to playing your game too!
Great entry. Good artwork, good audio, short and sweet.
I love simple and effective games, this is one of those! Although some stages are way too difficult in my opinion, also giving player a sense of progression through the game would improve it quiet a bit (like, giving player an idea how far he is into the game, doesn't have to be a progressbar, could be just text or something in the background you're getting closer to) Great entry.
Cute and well done, took like 100 attempts to beat, won't spoil the ending!
I really liked the progression with the visuals, although the mechanic left me with mixed feelings, it's like there is a thing that I want to do (move forward) but I just have to stop from time to time which feels kind of arbitrary. Maybe if you flip it could feel better? Like pushing player to go forward instead of pushing him to stay in place. Nice entry!
Nice one! Never would have thought I'd see someone else make a game about smashing furniture aswell, but here we are! Really like the atmosphere with that menacing music and black and white aesthetic.
Damn, that's how ludum dare game should look like! Simple and effective.
I felt like a goddamn bee while playing this, my hand is numb. 5 stars.
I am xk the name and this is my favourite entry. Simple and effective.
Looks beautiful and smooth, I liked the concept with the survival game with cards. Feels too simplistic though, doesn't require much management to survive I guess having more cards with different odds could add more variety? (Eg Go scavenging 25% find monster 25% find ammo 25% find wood 25% find nothing) Maybe having some random events with narrative or fixed progression points (although such criticism is not fair for LD entries), just some thoughts of mine. Good job!
Good concept, I like how it flips between I'm winning / oh no I'm losing naturally, there's something fundamental about this design. Sound design makes it feel soothing somehow. Good job.
Nice concept! Like papers please but from the over POV.
Nice game bro!
Managed to surprise me, although I had my suspicions after 'adult' warning, good job. Reminds me of doki doki in spirit, not as hardcore of course.
Ducks...
Hey, thanks for comments!
@wrexialmt
>Wheres the votes for Audio and Visuals?! Pity you turned them off.
Music and sounds are creative commons, I thought it won't be too fair. And visuals, well, perhaps I shouldn't have, explosions and stuff took me some time.
>Love the tutorial layout, gonna steal that idea at some point!
Feel free to do so, it's all common property!
@BeamKirby Thanks! It says uploaded 14 hours ago because I was kinda lazy about making webgl build and filling up gj page stuff.
```I do have to point out that in one level (I believe it was level 11), while I was travelling between a bunch of huge asteroids, I think I picked up a power bolt, causing the power explosion bullets to fly out, and one bullet got stuck between asteroids or something, because a few hundred thousand particles started spawning all over the place and the game lagged horribly. Luckily, I died and could restart the level. :P```
I'm ashamed to admit but that's a known bug, I'll do something about it this weekend. :lying_face:
Foremost, great first-time entry, keep at it!
Surprisingly smooth controls (although you should've used CCD for the character to remove jitter). Nice little touches on animation, nice use of screenshake. The concept is good, but I think it's too challenging (for a designer, not gameplay wise). Plot adds a nice simple narrative touch to everything. Doing 8x8 art was a good move, there is a nice unity in your sprites.
The whole game feels like a tutorial, each level there is some new thing, but I haven't used the previous thing long enough and... well you get the point.
No sound or music, I know time constraint and stuff, I failed to deliver sound myself many times, but that's no excuse, sound adds a lot to a game (much more than it feels like when you're making it!), missing out on that is not a good tradeoff at all!
The color palette, I know you're probably not an artist, but here is the tip, find some picture that you really like and use the eyedropper tool on it to get yourself some nice balanced colors, then just use them to draw everything.
Low tonal contrast, open your graphics editor, open hue/saturation filter, drag saturation to 0 (make image black and white), you will find that your background is just as dark as your foreground, and the grass is brighter than your characters, you want have tonal layers in your graphics (unless intended otherwise), that makes them clear sharp and punchy!
Every ludum dare game has a lot of flaws, that's just the way it is, don't take anything personally, learn to focus on the essential and you'll get a great game. You have every skill needed, practice them, learn to manage them and I hope to see you at LD41!
First of all, that's a great first-time entry, I hope you'll be entering a second, third and whatever time (if you enjoy this sort of thing of course). I followed you, so you can expect another review if you enter next ludum dare.
I dig the aesthetics, that's what got me to try it, I see you put a lot of effort into it, that's 5 stars from me. Nice reflection, nice color scheme, smooth frame rate, tiny details like ship trails and such, you did well on getting people to try your game! This is where it goes south though, I hope you don't get discouraged by my criticism, treat it as compliment because I take my time to point out what I think is missing in your design mindset.
0. I don't see a shooting animation. 1. I don't see a hit animation at all, if its there, it's not visible enough and it's a vital piece of information. 2. I don't see enemies exploding, same thing, vital information is missing from the player. 3. I don't see me being hit, vital information. 4. I don't see my health clear enough (It took me a 3rth look to figure out that this black vignette is my health, it should be screaming YOU'RE DYING) 5. You get the point.
You should focus on these things first, because this will make or break your game.
Music is ok but it gets old really quickly. I don't know if its a bug or not but when I played the game it had no sound
0. Shooting 1. Hitting stuff 2. Enemies dying 3. Me getting hit 4. Me dying 5. You get the point.
Sound is a vital for articulation of gameplay mechanics and it's just good to have it, you've made a rookie mistake here. :)
Well, not much here. Enemies take too long to kill, they spawn too fast, you could be better off just spawning a single enemy each minute for the first 3-5 minutes. You could add some variety by having just two types of enemy, big slow ones and small fast ones, I don't think that would take too much programming time, but I'm getting tired here, so that's the end of my review.
Good job, a little more conscious direction and it could be a really fun game with awesome aesthetics. I hope I won't sound arrogant by suggesting you to check out my previous entry, it's a spaceship shooting game too (be vary that's a jam entry though, but I was working solo) you can see the difference those little things make there. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/power-2
Have a nice day and excuse my grammar! See you at LD41!
Great job, this reminds me why I got into game development. <3
Awesome, I love historical themes.
Neat little game but to be honest I barely understood anything that's going on. I guess Henry is a fox and he's dead? I had some thoughts while playing the game I'd like to share. 1. You seem like you know what you're doing with art, your animations and sprites are awesome, but there are no shadows in the game, no shadows for the arrows / trees / characters. In general light is a must for establishing atmosphere. Just a few god rays or shadow circles can go a long way and it doesn't take any time to throw them in so there's no excuse for not doing it. 2. Same goes for the sounds, googling 'free winter forest ambience' and slapping it into the game takes minutes. 3. You could foreshadow more, play with the idea of who is henry, maybe he's a human? What if it's a child? Could be a tense story if you had like a dark forest, have a snow storm going or something... But that's just my ideas. 4. Why is there a wall in this frigid forest? :D You could use just the trees.
Anyways, congrats on your entry! Nice one.
`Anyway, I have been rumbling on for too long as usual, go and take care!` That's exactly what I would say I was chained to a wall in a dungeon.
The artwork is decent, the gameplay is ok, it's confusing at first but then you get the hang of it and I respect the amount of work put into the game, but now for the 'recommendations'.
0. The environment is huge and abstract, you could go smaller with more detail, or just toss in some story pieces here and there. 1. This game need sound, without sound it's just way too bland. 2. Character should bounce a little when walking, that gives it a lot more life. Even 3 pixels will seem look if you bounce it up and down correctly, as if it's walking. 3. The jump is kinda stiff, but I see that it varies height depending on how long you hold the button, that's a good trick, two more would be 'coyote time' and I don't know how the second one is called, but it's when you hit corner when you jump onto a ledge, you shouldn't get stuck by a few pixels.
You should be sure that what you are doing will be engaging enough in itself before pouring so much effort into an entry given the time limit (not like I've never done that myself :p). Anyways. It's a nice entry, a lot of work and love went into it, I hope you'll keep it up and improve. See you next time!
The screenshots and halloweeny theme caught my eye. The sprites were nice enough. The music is good. The sounds are OK. Now Let's see what's not... 0. The wall of text, I like narrative games, but hey, who likes the wall of text in the beginning? You can give out the story in bits an pieces to the player through gameplay. 1. The jump, besides the fact that it doesn't work sometimes (it should work even when it technically shouldn't see 'platformer coyote time') it has a 'flat' curve, a better feeling jump would be higher if you press button for longer, and the gravity would increase when you release the jump key (google something like 'better platformer jump' there are videos about this topic). 2. The attack is on the mouse but the rest of the controls are on the keyboard, for me it feels unnecessary, could just use keyboard keys, but that's a minor thing. The bigger thing is that there's this sort of swing to it, that feels unnecessary, an instant attack would have felt better in this case in my opinion. The attack animation could be telegraphed better, right now I barely notice it and it doesn't feel good to hit things. 3. The death, the player shouldn't have to wait this much time. 4. You could've voiceovered the wall of text in the beginning, but I never do that myself, but that would be cool...
Wow that's quite a lot I wrote here, anyway, I have much to say just because you use these mechanics which have a lot of specific stuff figured out already, I hope you find my post helpful. Congrats on your entry! You know how they say, finished game worth 10 unfinished games, who says that? I don't know, just made this up.
Good luck on your game development journey, don't forget to have fun!
I'd say there is potential, but you know, 3 loops is not quiet enough to realize it, it's a LD game, I get it, but still. You used sounds, that's nice, it's essential for horror. You could still do more with the time constraints, just adding text, sound and really basic pixely textures. Like for example a face looking at you from the window, then you try going out through the window but still come back, then you start starving, have to go shit in the bucket, explore the implications of being stuck in a room for days on end... Anyways, congrats on your entry!
I likee the aesthetics, the game feels retro in a nice way. Although gameplay feels retro in a not as nice a way, jerky movement might be too retro for my eyes. My suggestion would be to use a more abstract castle with less detail but make it bigger in size, this would add a feel of exploration to the game, you can also add some purpose for the rooms to tell a story of a dungeon through context which usually feels awesome, that's what I like the most about such games (abstract visually, rich in world detail) Anyways, good job, thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Solid entry. Nice job doing a voiceover, I wonder don't know why so few people do it (me included) ? It's so easy and adds a lot of character.
Nice, I like concise small entries where everything is sort of evenly polished. But you could've had more gameplay than this, like adding a sideways moving things, or chasing things shooting things like walls, maybe bonuses like being able to collect those red dangery things like in pacman. Anyways, it's a nice entry, congrats!
Thit game caught my eye because I've made one aztec themed game myself for LD45. I dig the audio and the graphics. Kinda hard to catch those falling dudes though, I couldn't really understand how you're supposed to catch them. Anyways, good job, I approve the aztec aesthetic.
I see you wen't all in on the art, respect for that. I like 'samurai' theme. A few points I'd like to mention that may help you. 1. If you're doing a samurai game, your sword attacks should leave a huge blood splash 'Kill Bill' style, period. 2. The sword sound is kinda annoying to the ears, consider adding a little reverb or use equalizer to cut off some of the annoying frequencies. 3. The sound design is paramount for storytelling, if you're stressed out about compo rules, just go record some kind of ambient sound, anything, dead silence is a mood killer. 4. Use lighting, vignette effect, shadows, ray light beams, whatever, don't leave your game evenly lit, it's a mood killer. Congrats on your entry!
The gif caught my eye with it's shadow of the colossus-y sense of scale, it looks pretty cool. The mechanics are simple but solid. But the sounds are hard on the ears, they are too high and hurt my ears. The graphics are OK, but could use a bit more detail on the titan, it's like 8x8 when the player is 16x16 (actually player's sprite is awesome, I like it very much). In general the game comes together very well, it doesn't try to overstay it's welcome (which is a common issue with ludum dare games), well done!
Nice. I legit enjoyed this. Had a little 'oooh' moment when I realized that you need to break the columns. The way you made 1 boss fight into a game makes me think about the scope of Ludum Dare games. Congrats!
Подвиг народа!
That's a 10.
You know what? I like it.
I hope this is not inspired by experience. :expressionless:
@rocket-and-blanky I don't share source code but the gist of it is really simple. I have a bunch of game objects on the scene representing each room, them I create a C# script with a coroutine entry point where I script the dialog.
I also use this asset for the dialog box and choice menus. https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/game-toolkits/fungus-34184
#1 Theme.
Just wanted to say, I think this is the best game I've played so far. Good job, for real. Could've added some narration on the background like in Stanley parable or something, that would make the returning less annoying.
Great idea, could be expanded into a full fledged game, damn, I'm jealous.
Looks amazing! Great atmosphere, feels like a stylized version of black and white. Loved it.
Very touching! I love story narratives, end the ending, oh god... That plucked the strings of my heart. Keep it coming.
Nice first entry! Cool concept, sort of Oregon Trail but about farming, keep working and doing Ludum Dares!
Liked it. Cool interpretation of the theme, the boss is ruthless. Sometimes people call for wrenches and stuff, idk, I guess you have to serve those too!
A rhythm game for harvest? :D That is very creative. Nice job!
Chill non punishing game! Refreshing for a game jam.
Wow, I wanna hear a backstory for that crow, it has something to tell us...
Ahh, shame there is no end condition. What a lovely game. I really like the way you build the onboarding in your submissions! Great job.
Harvesting shooter! Fresh idea, really liked the inspiration you took from High on Life. Solid entry.
Wow, what a word play! Unexpected. Fresh. :tm:
Outstanding graphics! Astonishing audiovisual experience.
Very creative! Honestly, didn't expect that kind of game for the theme!
Nice PS1 aesthetics! Loved it.
Nice job! Making IRS audit fun is quiet a challenge!
This is brilliant! A multiplayer game! Wow, had to call my friends to play it, but once we've figured it out, it was a blast! Great job!
Great job! I've enjoyed it very much. It's very creative that you've connected the harvesting with vampire survivors! :v:
Wow, a bold game! Makes you feel. Great job, keep it up!
Nice deck builder. Really like those kind of games.
@rrsmtz I've played your game during the ratings phase! Was like: C-658VsXoAo3ovC.jpg
Huh! A game about Jeepers Creepers!
Nice graphics! Gameplay is simple but satisfying, I'd say you could make colliders smaller, but it's fine either way! Great submission!
Wow this is so real it actually teaches you how to harvest data! I loved it.
Very very cute game! I liked the creative ways you've came up with to enrich the variety of such a simple mechanic, good job!
I loved the concept and the atmosphere. I can see an amazing concept for a game where you deliver and read letters of people in 1984 like world.
Such a cute cozy game! Very relaxing yet clever and challenging puzzle. Loved the character and the concept.
It was good. Interesting approach to management, I liked the simplistic aesthetic. The 'contained' feel of the game is nice. Also +++ for the theme :D
Nice and simple! Really like the smiling sun in the background :)
Nice environment! I loved the level design. Lovely atmosphere.
Such a cute little cozy game. Relaxing experience. I liked it.
Loved the mood! Great atmosphere.
Well done! Nice graphics, smooth controls and sound effects. I especially liked the side kick - jump combo and the way things explode. The only thing for me is that the cat enemies are not clearly visible on the background. photo_2023-05-17_11-51-08.jpg. Anyways, great job! :)
Great first time entry. Could add some more feedback for the sheep and the dog, but it's a perfect idea for a game jam. :smiley:
Cute duck! Love the simple puzzle mechanic. Could be expanded into a bigger game!
Very original concept, probably the most original take on the theme I've seen this time around! Such a unique experience. Well done.
Really interesting mechanics. Such polish. Wow. Impressive as always!
Wow! I was surprised by the atmosphere. It has a really nice vibe to it. Cozy game about flying around and exploring the world. Impressive.
Nice vision. I can see a great game in this! Kinda short, but it's a compo, hey!
Very satisfying core loop. Enjoyed the simplicity of it. The music is perfect. 5 stars.
Cheers.
Very good. Very polished. Loved everything <3
@fumybulb Fixed it :)
So much polish! And there's an ending. Very nice!
Wow! So much content. Very clever mechanics. I had some hotline miami vibes in this for some reason and I love it!
100% skill based game. 100% boxing. 100% champion. Great job.
@ategon yeah, no problem :thumbsup:
