I very enjoyed playing this one! Great entry!
10/10
Wow! I can't believe you pulled that of in 48 hours! I love how it just grew in scope. I'm not going to spoil it for others but make sure you play it until the win-screen. You won't regret it.
This game depicts how our world really is. Fantastic.
A very enjoyable idle game with well balanced progression and nice visuals! Really impressive work, especially for a compo entry. SPOILERS INCOMING: I pretty much expected it from a game by you, but was still pleasantly surprised when the "Daniel-Mullins-ness" hit. It really drove the narrative home and I love how you depicted what humankind is doing. Especially the "we have no idea what we're doing but we do it anyway" on other planets. Not sure if this is the intended message but I interpreted it like this... Oh wait, now that I think about it, weren't there alien portraits on the other planets? So maybe it's not just humankind... Anyway, food for thought and the end made me chuckle quite a bit :) PS: I only recently tried Boba for the first time and wow, it really is good stuff :D
i'm in awe. completely subverted my expectations *multiple* times. each new surprise totally surmounted what i was going to say before it, but i'll list them in order here anyway:
a. initial thoughts: i was considering making an incremental game myself so it's really cool to see a nice polished one pop up! the simple mechanic of enforcing a cooldown limit for decrees makes for some interesting purchase order strategy (at least in the early game). maybe just for speedrunning sake, but with higher cooldowns and costs it could be a substantial part of the decision process. the cardgame-like effect of the 'doubling' decree adds even more mechanical/strategic intrigue, i'd love to see more stuff like that in an incremental game. my brain's going wild thinking of the optimal strategic purchasing order when interactions like that are involved, haha
b. i literally gasped out loud when i got new planets/areas. multiple simultaneous clicker games is such a cool concept.
c. once multiple windows appeared, i was floored. every little minor interesting mechanic was completely shadowed by this. what an amazing idea. conceptually not too different from just separate tabs like before, but it feels so much more substantial. and having a central window just for a bird's-eye summary of the other worlds is so so cool. Clicking through like a dozen worlds each with a *unique design* was incredible, in a larger version of this game i could totally see myself translate out the languages. i reaally love the concept of essentially cramming together a bunch of simultaneous clicker games of different themes. what a wild concept for a gamejam game.
I think the overall pacing of the game is really nice, i could see myself being fine with spending even *more* time on each planet building it up like the first one, but i think making it as quick as it is now is good for a jam game. this plus the lack of need for translating makes it very approachable for all kinds of players.
And of course, the ending is hilarious. wraps up the game so nicely. incredible entry, one of my favorites of any ludum dare.
I was skeptical at first, the game being too fast to handle any layer of strategy, but when it finally unravels itself it has some really nice ideas in a pretty fast fashion. The end was really enjoyable, and make it a really good entry. I hope people won't stop too early in the game.
Incredible. The fact that someone could take 48 hours and make a game that has not one but two amazing "oh you thought that was the game scope" twists is nothing short of miraculous. I honestly have no idea how this was done in such a short time.
In addition to that, the core gameplay loop is just straight-up compelling! It was really nice and relaxing.
Knowing your style, I thought this game was a forkbomb when windows started popping up. I think this is your best compo game yet, and perhaps the best idle game of all time. I have nothing negative to say about it, it's perfect
Lmao this was great, thanks for another fun experience
Glad to see the creator of Inscryption, Pony Island and The Hex on this Compo (even though I'm participating for the first time, and you are here not the first and not the second time)! Making such a well polished game in 48 hours is a real deal, though you have a lot of experience, so it's understandable. Anyway, gorgeous work!
I was already intrigued by the screenshot (graphics felt nice, especially for The Compo), but when I started playing I liked a lot of other things as well. Here are some thoughts:
- Nice little touches on a lot of things like: rulers getting older and changing; animated sun and changing weather; rumble on GUI elements; adding farms and other objects on tiles while progressing and etc. - Neat graphics (both GUI and world elements). - Fun gameplay, even though I'm not a fan of idlers / clickers. Wanted to see what the Harvest is (I'm pretty sure this was the idea – that's why it's shown pretty early in the game). - I like how you reskinned stuff for different civs – it seems like a logical decision, though you could just stopped at 1 civ, but you didn't :) Asian planet with rice made me smile. - After Part 1 of the game it became too confusing, even though I was ready because of the Intro and since I know your games pretty well. It was a real nice idea to make a reskin for other planets and make a player to Harvest a few more planets, but when I collected 10 "????" and bought the upgrade, everything turned out to something really confusing, and then I lost my interest – 3 game windows? What? Pretty funny, but no idea what to do after that. Closed 2 of the windows, and then when I completed 3-rd, last window just closed. Sooo.. funny, but confusing. - After my first "not 100% playthrough" I decided to finish the game, and I saw the ending. I still don't think that the idea with 3 windows is a good solution (since it's too confusing), but it's a funny one. Could be made in 1 window with the same outcome though. - Nice sounds and music. I liked the first soundtrack more though. - Didn't understand at first why the game is called BOBA though, I always accidentally read it as BOOBA. When I got the ending, I got it, but I had to google the word anyway. - Buyable upgrades are not different enough compared to upgrades, that you can't afford currently. This is one UX-suggestion, everything else seems good.
Great game overall! For The Compo – It looked incredible even before the Part 2, but after Part 2 it looked even more hard to make in 48 hours. I slept only 2 hours during The Compo and barely had enough time to finish [my game](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/catchy) (it was ready only 30 minutes before the deadline), so I won't be surprised that you didn't sleep at all. I'm not used to make games in such small time frames, [I prefer to take my time in this craft](https://www.potioncraft.com/), but I was really shocked because of how much can be done in just 2 days (it's 48 hours, damn it!), and your submission is a perfect example. Making it too often can be exhausting though – I don't think I will want to participate in the nearest few months, but it's for now – we'll see :)

Made me lol at the end. Should've seen that coming.
Loved it! 9999999/10
As well, I started with a sigh "oh, just another idle game". But then something compelled me to continue, maybe it was the clever tradeoff between resources that forced to actually engage with the things in order to progress...? But once I reached the end of the first stage and a new chapter opened, I was really wondering when it would end... And then again multiple times...! Congratulations for that one, it is a truly interesting idea, unexpected, and fun! I really enjoyed the mix of idle and the subversion of tropes, the cleverness of the multi-tab multi-window gameplay...! Good job! Enjoyed it a lot.
And I particularly liked the little portrait of the successive rulers, that age and change physically then get replaced... Nice touch!
It ended for me on a screen with the galaxy and the purple orbs underneath, not completely completed, with nothing else to click or do... A bug maybe? although I waited a long time to see if anything would happen, sadly I didn't see the end screen :( But nonetheless, I immensely enjoyed this one!
10/10
Loved the concept! Really enjoyed harvesting all these civilizations for some nice boba :)
I was wondering why it is called Boba. Fantastic.
As always, you've knocked it out of the park. This was absolutely delightful.
The variety of graphics and details for the different civilizations was extremely impressive for 48 hours, and the progression and UI were very satisfying. The multiple twists were incredibly twisty, and without spoiling anything, I feel very hydrated.
I've played games that try to emulate a Feghoot before, but never one that manages to cram so much interesting detail and draw it out for so long. Great comedy, great execution.
jESUS Christ that was fucked up easily my fav of the jam one of the best takes on an incremental ive seen in a very long time
wow
CRAZY!!!!!!!! Good idea I have never seen!!!! 99999/10
So good, was genuinely intrested in wtf was going on. The graphics and audio is great, for only 48 hours one of the best games I've played this jam so far! Good job!! :)
Incredible use of multiple windows. Good job not making it tedious after the bottom fell out. Phenomenal job.
That was absolutely great, keep making awesome stuff like this I'll never get tired of playing them.. Very ambitious but you pulled it off. It's thematically interesting even before throwing a curve ball at you, which was executed brilliantly. Games that break my expectations and surprise me are always my favourites and yours always do!
This is absolutely unbelievable. How the heck you finished this in the 48 hours I have no idea.
I was blown away by the concept and the twists, this is such a good entry. 5 stars all round.
Unexpected turn of events. Love it.
Ooooh now I get the Boba name! We were just making boba tea all along!
Wow, what a word play! Unexpected. Fresh. :tm:
This was one twist after the next. Once i thought i get it, it turned out I did not. And then there was THE TEA!
Very very good. It's absurd that you finished this in 48 hours. I laughed a lot at the ending.
A very fan thing!
Cool game,i like the error codes and the ending.
Amazing game!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is pretty on point
Sweet combo of clicker and strategy! Loved it.
the first time the app closes and open 3 more, I thought it was a virus. The weird language that is there makes it worse lol ...
Seriously, I did not expect the ending. This is such a good game. I can't believe this is done in 48hours.
fuck yeah
Oh man, thats just a classic Daniel. Loved it. Create concept, solid execution and the pay off was really funny. Perfect
5/5 all! Thank you for the game! I really enjoyed it!
Jesus, what a game I just played... really cool, hardly say anything.
One of favourite game in LD52! Really thought-provoking when you find that: viewing everything in a high level, every step human take finally is just making everything in our life meaningless, like when text lost its meaning to the player, you can still find a way of developing "your" civilization, even if you know nothing about what it is.
True attitude towards life is to look at everything around you, care about people in your daily occurance, and actively practice in society and enjoy it.
Loved it! The take on the theme and the peeling back of the onion was really satisfying. I have no idea how you were able to put all that together in 48 hours - super impressive. One of my favorites of the jam. Awesome work!
How? This game is so unique, polished and simply jaw dropping. It maybe some kind of clicker-idler-city builder but also much more. And just so slick and fun. Great entry.
Wow. At first I wasn't *that* blown away. These comments are glowing, but I didn't see what the fuss was all about. As soon as it split into 3 windows, I was stunned. Wow, what in the world. And then the ending cutscene... I just sat in silence for a while thinking about what I witnessed. Yeah, This game deserves to win. Great work.
I thought it's just a idle game, well it wasn't lol
I 100% see why this one got 1st place XD Great job! What I shame I did not stumble upon this one gem before end of LD...
Congrats on a well-deserved first place!
That's an amazing game, and perhaps the most I've ever laughed from a Ludum Dare entry. Well deserved first place!
Congrats on 1st place in the compo! We featured Boba in a little post on the GitHub Blog @ https://github.blog/2023-02-03-ludum-dare-52-staff-picks
