LD46 — Keep it alive

Matchstick Elegy by stevenjmiller 2020-04-26T08:30:35Z

I am a huge fan of Sokoban and Sokoban-ish games, as they are relaxing and challenging. As others pointed, the levels are getting very hard soon which is excellent for a 20 level game which also has a story. This makes a short game not so short and I am sure many will return to complete it once the play+rate is over.

@stevenjmiller Can you give a hint of your puzzle design protocol? These puzzles are made so hard!

Matchstick Elegy by stevenjmiller 2020-04-26T17:51:24Z

Thanks for the details. I am working on a game which is getting close to the level design phase hence I was curious. Quality level design seems like alchemy and I desperately want to know more about how the good designers do it.

Princess Ribbon by Goutye 2020-04-26T22:48:57Z

Crashes on my T420 Thinkpad. I guess it is because my max OpenGL version is 4.6 here and also no Vulkan. The single EXE is a massive plus though. :)

Princess Ribbon by Goutye 2020-04-27T05:48:08Z

Haha, no problem at all. Would try the debug version.

EDIT: I started it from Godot and it was good. Then I restarted the EXE and it crashed my whole PC, got a blue screen and had to restart. After the restart, the EXE works nicely. Unfortunately I can not reproduce the problem anymore but even if I could, I doubt it would be anything specific to Princess Ribbon.

Thanks for your helpful attitude.

Our World by SelfTitled 2020-04-20T14:01:54Z

Spent some time with it. Would have been nice to be able to ship out the excess of apples. :)

Efi by ludipe 2020-04-25T09:46:34Z

A nice snake game. The only downside is that I had to play in a very small window to get it run smoothly on my i5 Thinkpad. Note that as the game do not adjust its speed to real time but to frames rendered, if I tackle my GPU with it, it gets easier for the mama bird. :)

Keep It Alive by danman9914 2020-04-24T20:46:20Z

Well thought and well assembled. Although I prefer lighter themes, it is yet an awesome work.

Tumble Baby by 01010111 2020-04-26T01:15:24Z

A lovely entry by the keynote author. :)

Ninja and Mouse by TrampolineTales 2020-05-01T22:06:44Z

A lovely gem. Top tier on my list. Still, a physics could be improved. I would like to be able to make the mouse more fat to go for fast paced combos. o/

Algernon's Flower by bentglasstube 2020-04-29T23:30:23Z

Very nice entry, I am glad I picked this one as it is an upper house game. Congrats on making a game using your own tools. It runs nice and smoothly. The theme is a good pick, I like it. The downside is that several times I just waited for a resource over my flower as it died, despite it got all of that kind before which was given. I think that pick up triggered spawn as it was suggested by @loveapplegames is something worth to consider. o/

Faclive by zampi 2020-04-25T21:00:37Z

This one is a gem. I wish more people would play it!

Keep Your Distance by paul-sinnett 2020-05-04T23:48:50Z

Nice, a Scratch game, and a good one! Simple and brilliant. Best COVID related game I've come across so far. Good luck with it!

ADRENA-LINE by managore 2020-04-25T09:12:39Z

I feel it a little off-theme, but still one of the best games made for LD46. I keep it on my HDD for casual play. Thanks!

GOOFBALL by pvg 2020-05-01T15:19:17Z

I like the elliptic paddle. Missed to play it with the mouse though, and it is a little laggy on my i5 Thinkpad which I would not expect from a simple game like this. I served the ball to outer space once and the paddle can go out from the bounds but those are minor bugs. Well done for 48 hours long a Unreal Engine experiment!

Parental Instinct by Fatsheep 2020-04-29T06:11:03Z

Being a father of three little children, this game is not fun for me, sorry.

Life by esenti 2020-05-02T21:12:52Z

Haha, we Life game makers do gather at the theme. I like your game. I had something similar in my mind as future directions of my game.

The Next Generation (Conway's Game of Life Puzzles) by kevinworkman 2020-04-25T22:30:38Z

Also a Game of Life entry maker. Very nice puzzler you made of it, and it is surprisingly hard!

Magnetic Angel by damdoshi 2020-05-05T00:16:29Z

Awesome entry made in C! It requires some polish but shows its potential nicely in its current state too. I like it looks like an old arcade game. o/

Tiny Fragments by Daniel Moreno 2020-04-24T21:09:35Z

Finally a really lovely one! This is a pure game.

Panicked Planet by mhsco 2020-04-20T14:09:07Z

This game has potential for sure. It only lacks a progressive level system with objectives.

A Night In The Dark by lectvs 2020-04-28T22:27:09Z

From what light do the trees their photosynthesis? Or that light is just not visible for the player? He must have a short and unique wavelength range visibility or is dreaming. Even more as with a full tree one can feed a fire for a very long time. But these logs burn like straw. He must be dreaming. And there is a madman who do not care with the light but only to hurt our hero. He has no chance. Utterly nightmare! Uncanny. I am sure some like that. Me not so much, sorry.

I like the art style though.

MACHINA by Harry Alissavakis 2020-04-20T16:58:26Z

The best I've seen so far!

Bargaining with Supreme Beings So They Don't Destroy Us All by garygreen 2020-04-24T20:30:34Z

A gem. So far this game I enjoyed the most. Thanks!

Operation Asteroid by SvartTand 2020-05-01T22:39:00Z

Very nice planets! Good concept. I like the mission. I like the mechanics. Since Imperium Galactica I am fond of the pauseable real time games.

I would like to see more of the planet even if it is full of armaments: the lovely blue green turns to a concrete jungle so I am thinking what do I save at all?

Awesome work in 48 hours, your timelapse video is impressive. I wish I could work with same productivity and quality!

Embers by Anuke 2020-04-25T20:52:11Z

Very beautiful but too grim. I feel sorry for the little girl. I just she could get to the spring and build a fortress for the next winter. That would make it a nice story her getting alone into the wild winter and so on.

I can imagine that it can get made with good management. She need torches around the fire and also an axe to chop trees.

Cellular: Automata by Baturinsky 2020-04-26T22:15:16Z

Being also a GOL compo entry maker, I am biased towards these games but I see them all so nice!

Here is my level:

``` === B1/S1; B2/S12; B234/S234; B2345/S1234; B3/S0; B3/S34567; B8/S8*3; ###### ########## ############ ##### #### # ##### #### # ############ # ########### # ########## # ######### # ##### # #### # ### ## # ### ## ## ### ## #### ## ###### ```
Prehistoric Fire by meskaline 2020-05-01T22:52:44Z
Lovely pixel artwork. This game has perspectives. I was missing the ability to make new fires and also to have an objective. This could get evolved to a very funny game.
Edit: I suggest you to play and rate games to get your game some attention which it deserves. It is well done.
Keep Coron Alive by Qux 2020-05-03T08:45:16Z
Haha, I had a similar idea when I decided to switch theme. I ended up going for something non-corona related because of the many haters during the theme voting period. I am glad someone made this game though.
@noahro I have the most recent drivers. It is a 2011 made laptop. Thanks for the answer.
GOLKIA by Szieberth Adam 2020-04-20T02:06:55Z
The following features will be added for post-mortem:
- Zoom with mouse wheel - Increase and decrease the size of the life/dead brush - Speed up and slow down - Make the whole world life or dead with one key
Most of these are not very hard to add. Zooming is the toughest and I am a little disappointed that I was unable to finish it for the deadline.
Despite the lovely support by my wife, my time was limited for this event. However, I really enjoyed it.
The game is calculated by a shader. This is the first time GPU programming for me and I am very satisfied with the result.
Expect a timelapse video soon.
GOLKIA by Szieberth Adam 2020-04-20T03:37:58Z
GOLKIA by Szieberth Adam 2020-04-20T15:28:25Z
Thanks for the kind feedback.
I do not own a Mac myself. I followed the build instructions but could not test it working. If you really intend to try it, you can download the LÖVE Application bundle (https://love2d.org/#download) and drop the .love file on it. That might work.
Expect more features within some day.
GOLKIA by Szieberth Adam 2020-04-24T11:19:39Z
**UPDATE!** Post compo version is out on [itch.io](https://sza.itch.io/golkia-ld46). A lot of features has been added which I originally planned.
GOLKIA by Szieberth Adam 2020-04-24T21:38:21Z
**UPDATE!** A gameplay video of the post compo version is up on [itch.io](https://sza.itch.io/golkia-ld46).
GOLKIA by Szieberth Adam 2020-04-26T23:43:16Z
@baturinsky Thanks for the link! Make the player able to change the rules is on my TODO. Seeing this video, colorfulization is now as well. :)
GOLKIA by Szieberth Adam 2020-04-28T15:32:53Z
@rafa-braga It is a [Game of Life](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway%27s_Game_of_Life) a sandbox. There are no objectives.
Moluski by Piko Monde 2020-04-20T14:04:56Z
A lovely short game. It was a fun to solve it.
SoapBoy by Gamekrazzy 2020-05-01T17:27:55Z
I as well love the art of this game. Everything well put together. I would prefer if my shoots would rather heal the zombies than to kill them, that would make me feel my mission noble.
It was not run on my PC out of the box, I had to copy msvcr110.dll into the destination folder.
SoapBoy by Gamekrazzy 2020-05-02T06:10:39Z
One more thing. If you have time for that @gamekrazzy , I suggest you to play and rate games to get your game some more attention which it deserves. It is well done.
Keepin' It Charged by kubs 2020-04-29T23:50:29Z
I like the mechanism and its look which results a nice high speed experience. It is not something easy to run through, I feel it hard enough although I am not experienced with platformers. I feel it a little off-theme though considering the character dies several hundred times and I do not see what to keep alive here. But the theme is more like an inspiration than something which bounds so that is OK. I am mostly rate compo games so I do not have a view where this game may end in jam but I hope it ends up in a nice position.
IcyNoid by XCVZXC 2020-04-21T15:47:08Z
I like the graphics and the audio, your game is looking cool. However, I had trouble with the theme and the mechanics. Can I eventually save the guy? I think he is determined to die there. I felt I have very little impact on the guy's trajectory with the paddle except for the combo move. Plus, I missed the collision of the paddle with other game elements. I so desperately would really save this lovely fellow and it is a little frustrating that it seems not possible.
Keep Everything Alive by drikdrok 2020-04-22T15:58:59Z
Good to see other games made with LOVE. I do not get the theme enough I think though. It is so absurd that increases its fun rate for many I am sure, but not for me. Very hard game though.
Zero by omercanbalandi 2020-04-20T09:53:33Z
This game destroyed the Zero filter of the Games page. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/games
I like its mechanics.
DDoS is coming by Alexey Akulovich 2020-04-24T21:31:06Z
Nice concept. I only miss that it is not colorblind friendly.
DDoS is coming by Alexey Akulovich 2020-04-25T16:01:06Z
@alexey-akulovich I think you mean the dots. Yes, that certainly helps. I generally recommend to check palettes on this great page: https://davidmathlogic.com/colorblind/
Game of Life+ by Teo Miklethun 2020-04-24T16:01:20Z
Nice to see another Game of Life entry, and a very good one!
Rolly and the Flower by Rolly 2020-05-03T10:09:26Z
This is a lovely cute game, I enjoyed playing it through!
Save It by sundhar 2020-05-04T23:11:46Z
Not a bad one but not a good one either. The artwork is elegant. I do not like the current control though. What about mapping controls to the numeric keys? For me it was not obvious in some levels what I supposed to do. Like in the previous one I simply had to go through the map and in the next one I did the same avoiding the chasers from a side then I fall down at the other end of the map and the level was restarted. Ah, so I supposed to kill them all! It turned to be yes. That is maybe me only but I prefer to keep chasers alive too if possible.
It Lives by Sbug 2020-04-26T23:09:00Z
I am not fond of but bizarre horror games at all. I wanted to kill the creature somehow but I failed.
PARENTHOOD by LanaLux 2020-05-11T22:24:31Z
Unfortunately my computer was not powerful enough to test this game. I was not able to shrink the window, it is fixed with the monitor's resolution. Seems a unique entry though but I better not rate it without being able to play it.
Fermi Paradox by tversteeg 2020-04-22T15:01:43Z
Recently I was thinking on giving a shot for game programming in Rust. I am happy you made this game and will certainly look for its source code if I go for Rust.
Save the station by Alexander Termer 2020-05-04T23:35:03Z
Wave 25, 9:30. :) A nice and innovative short tower defense game, may favorite so far. There was one thing which annoyed me a little: I had to deploy snapped to some invisible grid.
The Halting Problem by Ramble House Games 2020-04-25T22:59:28Z
For the first glance, I expected worse. But as I saw its mechanics I liked the concept immediately. However, it was still frustrating for me mainly because it was too slow and laggy on my i5 Thinkpad. I was not able to pick the tiles at the top and even if I managed to grab one of them, I could not place it in time for the robot. Also, the queue of the directions is very hard to follow. It is fine there but I would have paint the path for some steps at least. Also, there should be an objective IMO, otherwise it will get destroyed no matter what. As @almighty-games pointed, the robot is lovely which I think the same, and it might worth to give some chance. And if you would go that way it could cast levels and some story too which was missing for @patrickjr as well. I repeat that I really liked the concept behind it which could even deserve a released game built upon it some day.
IMOJC by Tesseract 2020-05-02T21:32:24Z
Life game makers united member here. I love we all made different variations on the theme, and I naturally like them all. :)
IMOJC is a little laggy on my PC. Well, naturally I do not expect the simulation to be faster but the UI could be more responsive.
Live for Money - A Pixel Art Economic Simulation/Resource Management Game by GND95 2020-04-25T22:12:35Z
Also a first-timer.
Lower resolutions are offered but are unplayable.
Also I feel the game not very to the theme. I am not very fond of the money trees, would have preferred regular fruit trees.
Social Life by CharlieGray 2020-04-20T17:01:23Z
I enjoyed the mechanics of the game. Thanks for the good time!
GRDN by bjornkri 2020-05-11T22:12:47Z
Hello. I just recently programmed PICO-8 which is a great manageable platform for LD. This is a good looking entry, I like the artwork. Nice this was made turn based. The only thing which I miss for many LD entries including this one is that I have no chance to keep it eventually alive and win. Anyway, this was a fun time to play with.
Synergy by Diamond Wolf 2020-05-08T23:12:18Z
As @solweak said. This game has good potential.
IN THE ANCIENT RUINS WITH AN IDIOT by LeonardoMarques 2020-05-03T08:33:51Z
I am very glad I found your game as I very enjoyed it. I agree with most points in the first paragraphj of @empty-set post, except for one: I think the pace of the game is fine: I like that I should sometimes cheer the moving platform to reach the end position in time. I also disagree with the frustration. True, the respawn mechanism is annoying, and the idiot could wait a second before start (I would make him to look around), but these are minor things which could be easily fixed so I put these issues aside completely in my rating. Why? Because the game was fun and challenging and it has a good theme.
Mama Birb by SouthernWerewolf 2020-04-22T00:19:59Z
Saved one only. Anyone managed to save both? I agree with the others about the controls and camera. However, all fine in 48 hours.
Frog by Santi_24 2020-05-01T14:52:22Z
Well, what I like is the jump mechanism. That is well thought and done. Otherwise, the game seems like being unfinished. I see no objectives. There are no levels. There is no chance to survive. I do not understand why is there a crosshair: who is hunting that little frog so desperately and why? I do ont understand why the little fishes hurt the frog. I would like to see a different movement system under water which could work together nicely with the current one which is nice overground. Still, this game has perspectives, I recommend you to polish it further.
RoboRepair! by brndncn 2020-05-03T09:50:49Z
I agree with the others, nice art style there. I agree with @omaskery , it would be nice to have some doable objective in the game.
The Gold'n Apples by kikiriki367 2023-01-10T11:57:06Z
I would love to have Windows binaries as HTML5 version is very laggy there. Played through the first few islands though. Nice entry.
The Gold'n Apples by kikiriki367 2023-01-11T22:10:42Z
Thanks for the Windows binary. The game is very relaxing, I enjoyed it.
The Gold n Apples screenshot.jpg
Score: 202, Gold: 21.
Note that in windows, I can skip the tutorial and play through the game, but the second island on the tutorial does not count the coins thus I was unaple to proceed. Also, quit game button does not work but that is a small thing really. Good luck with it on the jam!
The Gold'n Apples by kikiriki367 2023-01-11T23:31:25Z
Haha, thanks. The top left of the last island is the result of a little unlucky streak of markets. I do not wanted to sacrifise apples at that point.
Hortirata by Szieberth Adam 2023-01-08T22:54:33Z
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I had no time for title & help screens. You can quicksave with S key and quickload with L key. If you press S at the start of the level, basically you can reset with L. Moreover, you can drag&drop any level file onto the window to load it.
Hortirata by Szieberth Adam 2023-01-09T11:14:55Z
The itch.io page is done: https://sza.itch.io/hortirata
I will surely put some more work into this game. Special and dummy tiles, more levels, menu, tutorial, and some more things to come.
Hortirata by Szieberth Adam 2023-01-09T12:29:42Z
cheatsheet1.png
Basically a neighbour field ends up as the sum of the two values modulo 5. Same thing differently, sum wraps around at 5. That is the sum of the two values if it is lower than 5, otherwise the sum minus 5.
Hortirata by Szieberth Adam 2023-01-09T17:04:42Z
However, I think that part of the enjoyment is to figure out its mechanics yourself. Once you do that, the game gets relatively easy to solve. There are some tricks to find quickly the tile you should pick at the end but it requires some practice to learn them.
Hortirata by Szieberth Adam 2023-01-11T06:56:45Z
Thanks for the feedbacks guys. Indeed I had about 15 mins to design all of the levels hence the steep learning curve.
It is totally fine to randomly clicking until you get to 1 harvest from the solution. I almost do the same although I try to click to fields which seem to lower the counts of excess flower types. For the last step (1 harvest ftom equilibrium), I do check the fields one-by-one to find the solution.
Hortirata by Szieberth Adam 2023-01-11T07:06:11Z
@steelfeathers You can not click again on your last pick which is indicated by the black arrows. Also, you cant click on grass=0 fields as adding zero to adjacent squares would resuld no change. Also it would spoil the prevention of repetitions as you could always pick a grass field and then go back to your previous pick. Still, I get your point and will remove the repetition restriction from the release version as it seems to have more cons than pros. That version will have as simple tutorial levels as possible. :smile:
Hortirata by Szieberth Adam 2023-01-15T00:52:01Z
Again, thanks for the feedbacks, all of you. I am very happy you felt my game worth to play with.
Full version will probably have a serious UI mode, with numbers only. And more info about what is what and some initial hints as well. That will help.
Hortirata by Szieberth Adam 2023-01-17T12:51:22Z
@lfreinoso Hi, thanks for the report. Weird, you don't even supposed to be able to resize the window. Did you went fullscreen then back? What OS you use? Win 12? Might be something with its new ways of screen handling. Is the screen zoomed to 150% os something?
I tested it on more PCs. Still, full screen might work (F10 or Alt+Enter). Could you please check the dev version whether this issue affects it as well? https://github.com/SzieberthAdam/ludumdare52 Code->Download ZIP. Exe file in bin folder.
As always, thanks for the feedback!
I am working on the game since then and tried out the restart thing. No need. You just simply clicking for like 20 seconds more and you will end up at 1 step from winning the level. The real thing comes at 1 step away. Theoretically you can avoid getting back to 1 step if you *intentionally* do the unbalancing but otherwise, you will find yourself there again pretty soon. This applies to undo thing. Mind you, I removed the same field restriction in the release version which is an effective undo as clicking 5 times to same field gets you back to the original state. The goal with the restriction was to prevent but there is no point in screwing up with the players who are pretty much in the dark anyway. Tutorial, yes, that is a must, I am aware of it.
My son got my advices personally and is capabe to win the game at age of 7, even on a 19x9 size map which the release version will have. That made me thinking on additional levels of balancing for later levels. Will be fun -- at least for the one like me. :smile:
Thanks for the report @lfreinoso, I will look after this issue. The window handling is done according to the engine (Raylib) API docs and it should work fine out of the box IMO. However, I will do my best to fix this. Until that time, setting screen zooming to 100% should fix it.
Haha @itskdog, I appreciate your steadiness! :muscle: I will ship a post compo version which will have a tutorial in 1-2 days.
Edit: +1-2 days, delayed because of family business.
Post compo version is out with tutorial and more levels if anyone is interested. That helps to understand the mechanics of the game and the basic strategies. No sound yet though.
Amazing pure JS prototype, it catched my eyes instantly. Well done!
Truly a gem this game is. My only problem is that being a colorblind, it is very hard for me to distinguish the colors. Also, instead of a looping palette (that made me some confusion) I would expect the 5 colors in a row or column to make it easier to switch colors. :heart:
@ditam Thanks a lot sir, it is fine for me, Tol palette is good. I am a deuteranop. It is very kind you've made this alternate version.
For the record, I also have a colorblind friendly palette project: https://adam.szieberth.hu/post/e-cvfpc.htm
@cat-chef You've missed the thriller part then!
I am not fond of the genre but this one is a positive example. Scary but in a delicate way. Was fun, thanks.
Forked Up by Paroxysmal 2023-01-09T08:54:03Z
The HTML version lags badly on my PC, the Windows version shows the How to play screen but I can not start the game. The menu button does not work there.
Down to Earth by Chum Chum 2023-01-09T15:04:35Z
As all Unity HTML games, this one lags to on my PC. I would love to have a Windows binary. Played a little though, and this game seems a good one. I would like to get mouse right click binded to plant, as it is uncomfortable to press E while running around.
Gene Graph Garden by kaliuresis 2023-01-14T21:17:35Z
I have the same problem as @matimat . After I put all those files there manually from source, I get this in log: `error:assert(hr == S_OK) in code/win32_gl_main.cpp (1114): ` I have a relatively Old PC (no Vulcan, no OpenGL 3).
Dice Farm by ScarpeX 2023-01-15T15:24:27Z
Requires some balance, but nice game overall.
Too bad this game gets this few ratings. It deserves more truly.
