I unfortunatelly cannot vote as I am not a participant this year. But I really enjoyed playing the game. It's a neat idea, that feels a bit tetrisy. I like the graphics. Simple but very good work. I always enjoy these arcade style games.

Edit: My highscore 1139.

johnnysix 2023-01-08 23:12

The initial simplicity belied an more challenging game once I got a minute in. It wasn't totally clear what was going on with the top of the screen, as I was expecting to fail/lose quite quickly when I hit the top, and yet I managed to keep playing.

It'd be cool if the top pushed tiles down or there was some way to nudge them around. There were several spots where you can't solve for a clear top row.

vasco-freitas 2023-01-09 01:35

Unfortunately the controls kept glitching on me, and I'd be unable to move down, sometimes, or up other times, after playing a little bit. I feel like too many key presses are needed to move around the board. Graphics are cute, the idea is original. I also thought of naming my game Hyper Harvest, lol. Nice work.

Edit: It was my keyboard/system that was glitching after all. Sorry!

orion-black 2023-01-09 02:18

@reiqy I'm also fond of arcadey/action puzzle games, so it was fun to take a stab at it. You can see my highscore in the screenshot above, I'll have to play a bit more, or I'll get dethroned soon. Glad you enjoyed it.

@johnnysix You can get up to 4 fruits "crushed" and you lose with the fifth, but that isn't exactly clear or explained anywhere, oops (sorry). I'll have to revisit how the game communicates that, but for now an external explanation will have to suffice. This was in part to alleviate bad seeding issues. I considered adding some sort of "rng weighting", but I'll need to get a better feel for the game to do it properly. Thanks for your feedback.

@vasco-freitas You can also move by leaving keys pressed(the glitching might have obscured it), but even then, the game is input-heavier than it seems. The only solution I can think of would be to implement mouse as an input method, it's probably worth trying later on. A QOL I'll add for sure post compo is looping movement. Sorry for the glitching, with so many browsers and configurations out there, those things happen. Oh, and there's controller support, but that can also be its own can of worms.

caranha 2023-01-09 02:29

Pretty cool game! I found it really fun to try and figure out the matches, even if the rules are very simple. My highest score after playing a couple of times was 1311.

The only thing is that this game has so many fruits, but not enough *juice*! You should add some effects when you match, when a line is removed, when you get a high score, etc. :-)

Good job!

orion-black 2023-01-09 06:12

@caranha Strongly agree, with so much fruit crushing taking place, way more juice is in order.

clyde 2023-01-09 09:29

Deceptively simple! It quickly became apparent that you not only need to match fruits but also to leave room to set up other matches. That is to say, the puzzle format is very engaging.

The art is pleasant to look at and highly legible.

Sound is minimalist but provides ample feedback, though maybe some warning drone/alarm sound as rows approach the top would be neat.

vasco-freitas 2023-01-09 16:27

@orion-black Just want to let you know there wasn't an issue with your game after all, it was my system/keyboard that was randomly glitching!

mastoast 2023-01-09 17:35

nice game ! it's really becoming frenetic the more the level increase.

I think it can be nice to explain the rule of the empty row that disappears, at least in the description of your game. I found it randomly and i didn't understand what happened the first time

Also it is possible to score when selecting 2 empty rows, i don't know if this behavior is expected

My best score was 1028

orion-black 2023-01-09 18:53

@mastoast That's indeed unintended behavior, even if, in a way, it fits the theme . Thanks for the heads-up.

huozhedexiaoc 2023-01-09 19:03

I love tetrisy and I love this game!

amazing Idea and cute graphics

My best score was 965

adamwatters 2023-01-09 19:27

Really liked this game. The presentation is very good and the sound effects gave good feedback to the player.

plexsoup 2023-01-10 06:17

The core game loop is very satisfying. Nicely done.

zahkros 2023-01-10 15:05

Hey, fellow PICO-8 enthusiast! I played waaaay too much with this game, very nice work! My only concern was that once you get the feel of it, the difficulty curve is a bit too slow maybe. It would take time to die, that's for sure.:) Very well done, congrats ont his entry

meep 2023-01-10 16:54

Really fun Pico-8 entry! It gave some Tetris Attack/Puzzle League vibes, but with the floating blocks + line clear aspect of regular Tetris. :D Understandable given the compo constraints, but if you were to ever work on it post-jam, I think it'd add a lot to have some sort of combo mechanic- e.g., chaining multiple fruits if there's a clear path between each pair along the chain, to add extra depth to the strategy and satisfaction to pull off. Great work!

roblaro 2023-01-10 18:42

Tons of fun, cool take on the genre. Well done!

loig 2023-01-10 19:59

Wow, so good. I could not stop playing and playing. Very good entry.

Is it generated in a completely random way or is it always possible to survive for ever if you play perfectly?

ani 2023-01-11 00:17

This game is so good! Fun to play and looks great too - fruit is nice and bright, easy to identify. I might just have another go...

square-wave 2023-01-11 04:39

Ugh! This is so good! I rage quit at 1133 though. May come back for more later. It's really impressive how simple but engaging this little game is, and the art is just the right amount of bubbly. Great work!

orion-black 2023-01-11 06:00

@zahkros I need to refine the curve, so it's good to hear some thoughts.

@meep Yes, I'm planning in doing some post-jam work. I have some ideas for combo mechanics I'd like to try out.

@loig It's random, although, presently, the biggest limitation to keep playing forever is speed. I haven't done the math, but once it hits a 1 pixel every 2 frames speed, you're pretty much done.

roblaro 2023-01-11 14:50

Find myself coming back to this game, so addictive! Managed to get 1353, there is a point where it just gets just too fast for me.

orion-black 2023-01-11 16:28

@roblaro 1353!! Nice. It's pretty much the same for me, once it gets to around level 16 (or is it 17?), if I don't have a good setup going on, it's pretty much game over.

sipfindel 2023-01-12 16:45

I totally forgot I have to rate other games too. Simple but fun as hell. Good job

bobbo 2023-01-13 01:53

Veeeery addictive!

At first I made the mistake of not reading the rules and was one destroying blocks touching each other - though it was a rubbish game haha

But once I realised the rules it became one of my favourite games of this jam

paloobi 2023-01-13 03:47

This game is so fun and addictive, I keep wanting to play and top my high score. The art is really cute too! Great work!

jimbly 2023-01-14 15:27

That was fun! Ended kind of suddenly, I necessarily used up all of my wastes in a matter of seconds, would have been nice if there was some balancing factor there - a little slow-down, or board gets shifted by ~4 lines, just something to catch a breather =).

Screenshot 2023-01-14 072554.png

cannibalgirl 2023-01-14 19:44

nice match-2! I lost a few times before I realized i could also join tiles across the "empty" space by reading the instructions then it all clicked and it's quite fun to parse and strategize! I wish there was more "space" vertically to play like in tetris as it's quite easy to hit the ceiling.

Sweet entry and respect for the compo :metal:

szieberth-adam 2023-01-14 21:25

I enjoyed it a lot! Thanks!

bloodbane 2023-01-17 14:23

At first I tripped cause I thought it's another pico de pon clone but after playing, I figured out how to play the game and managed to score some hits. It was fun, I might try this again sometime.

zimny11 2023-01-27 00:36

Ah, so close! Really addictive game. Great job!

digivorix 2023-01-27 19:05

I like it! The graphics are charming and the gameplay is interesting. I like the way you match tiles too. Good job!

madbeagle 2023-01-29 09:19

Nice game - like Columns it takes a while to get going but then ramps right up. Congrats on the top-15 finish.

Screenshot_20230129_091700.png

Every now and again I port a jam game to C64 for the ZZAP! 64 magazine coverdisk, this seems like a good candidate!

m2tias 2023-01-29 10:57

Hey, saw your post about the results and so I tried the game. Pretty nice arcade puzzler! It seems people aren't very good at it though. Here's my highscore

hyperharvest_highscore.PNG

loig 2023-01-29 11:22

Argh, I thought I beat the best score, but it seems I was too late. I tried the game before, but I did not realize that it was possible to match fruits diagonally. Now I understand how one can make such high scores.

Congrats on your well deserved results.

orion-black 2023-01-29 16:14

@madbeagle Thanks. If you end up porting it, do let me know, I'd love to see it.

@m2tias To be fair, those numbers were for the compo version. I submitted a couple of changes post-rating that caused a bit of score inflation. For reference, my best went from 1323 to 2030(just now). Even then, 2014 is for sure quite high.

loig 2023-01-29 18:20

Just encountered a bug hyperharvestbug.png

orion-black 2023-01-29 19:03

@loig Thanks for the bug report. I might have found the condition responsible for that. Were you matching a fruit as it was at the very top, about to disappear/become waste? If so, hopefully it's patched now (not so easy to confirm, since it's pretty much a frame-perfect condition).

loig 2023-01-29 21:31

Yes, that is exactly what I was doing.
