The following features will be added for post-mortem:

- Zoom with mouse wheel - Increase and decrease the size of the life/dead brush - Speed up and slow down - Make the whole world life or dead with one key

Most of these are not very hard to add. Zooming is the toughest and I am a little disappointed that I was unable to finish it for the deadline.

Despite the lovely support by my wife, my time was limited for this event. However, I really enjoyed it.

The game is calculated by a shader. This is the first time GPU programming for me and I am very satisfied with the result.

Expect a timelapse video soon.

John Conway would love it.

About the only thing I was going to say was it would be nice to be able to zoom. But you've thought of that aready, love it!

It looks like an amazing game, but the MacOS app is not working. Not sure what the issue is. Knowing Apple, it's probably not your fault. Good work though!

szieberth-adam 2020-04-20 15:28

Thanks for the kind feedback.

I do not own a Mac myself. I followed the build instructions but could not test it working. If you really intend to try it, you can download the LÖVE Application bundle (https://love2d.org/#download) and drop the .love file on it. That might work.

Expect more features within some day.

An awesome implementation of the game of life and a wonderful tribute to JHC. Great job =]

I love game of life, R.I.P John Conway :'( good implementation. I'd like a zoom but you've already identified that. It might be cool if you could alter the rules at run time to see how it affect the sim.

Beautiful entry. Actually really relaxing.

kevinworkman 2020-04-26 20:49

From one Game of Life fan to another, this is great. Most Game of Life implementations throw too many buttons and dials at the user. I like the simplicity here- sit back and appreciate the beauty of [emergence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergence). I also love that you used this as an excuse to try something new (GPU programming), and that you gave your wife a shout-out. This whole entry made me quite happy.

baturinsky 2020-04-26 23:19

First, if you want it to look more pretty, experiment with colors and/or other life-like algorithms, like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVyjIbypwM

Second, very neat source and it's a great idea to use OpenGL for that. I'm a big fan of GPGPU myself, but did not know tht there is already a WebGL GOL.

szieberth-adam 2020-04-26 23:43

@baturinsky Thanks for the link! Make the player able to change the rules is on my TODO. Seeing this video, colorfulization is now as well. :)

rafa-braga 2020-04-28 05:27

I don´t think that i understund what im suposed to do in this game. But the art is good, the mood are nice and the theme fits, well done :)

szieberth-adam 2020-04-28 15:32

@rafa-braga It is a [Game of Life](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway%27s_Game_of_Life) a sandbox. There are no objectives.
