I like the atmosphere. The graphics are on point. The control are tight. (I was not able to play with a controller but with keyboard it is fine).

IMO the later upgrades cost too much resources. I think a good soundtrack as background would improve the game a long way.

Overall a nice entry.

frederoxdev 2023-01-08 21:22

Love the artstyle!

savidiy 2023-01-08 21:24

Nice! Please add to description Shift key for exit.

xamora 2023-01-08 21:27

I can't quit shop normal ?

ivorius 2023-01-08 21:36

That's a seriously impressive amount of work! Did you sleep at all? Although, thinking about it, the shrub hit sound would probably keep me awake all night too. lol Also, I can't find B on my keyboard. Had to plug in my controller to make it work.

paroxysmal 2023-01-08 21:40

@xamora Sorry forgot to list that key. Its the left shift to exit the shop. @ivorius Thanks. All the button call out in the game are for controllers and don't reflect a keyboard key.

jellybean 2023-01-08 21:47

controlls are exact enough that eventually I was playing a really patient fighting style and barely taking damage, But getting enough stone was really hard. I like the shop with the upgrades, it's a really cool way of packing something like a metroidvania into a small package since the player can't miss an upgrade accidently.

arscene 2023-01-08 22:11

First of, congratz.

I find the font kinda hard to read and the prices felt a bit high. Other than that I have not much to say.

Congratulations.

zyper 2023-01-08 22:37

The gameplay is both clever and satisfying, with very impressive graphics!

greynovembergames 2023-01-08 23:26

Great game, had a bit of trouble with keyboard controls in the menu and shop

verttixpertti 2023-01-08 23:36

Cute!!!!!!

streq 2023-01-09 00:35

Loved the graphics! really enjoyed the retro feel. The controls are tight enough that death always feels fair. Had some issues with the inputs but figured it out after a bit (I think you forgot to mention to press shift to exit the store). My only real criticism is that I do think the cost of the fork upgrades is a bit too high. But other than that it's a fun and good looking game!

jcmonkey 2023-01-09 02:02

gotstuckonload.png was a fun game. managed to get stuck on revive :D

paroxysmal 2023-01-09 02:05

@jcmonkey Always someone that has to go getting stuck in the levels. ;)

0xwavy 2023-01-09 07:14

Really loved the visuals here. I had a bit of a tough time getting a hang of the keyboard controls, but I guess thats on me since you recommended controller! Awesome work.

szieberth-adam 2023-01-09 08:54

The HTML version lags badly on my PC, the Windows version shows the How to play screen but I can not start the game. The menu button does not work there.

vrerabek 2023-01-09 10:14

LOVE the art style. The game was very fun although I had to figure out the controls on the keyboard since it did not correspond with what was written on the screen.

Great work overall!

iluvatar 2023-01-09 10:30

Pretty nice little gem! I like the GB aesthetics and how you executed it. The gameplay itself is rather simple, but more than enough for a Ludum Dare entry. As for me, it was a pleasant experience.

greenphox 2023-01-09 10:48

Beautiful art! Nice game and really a good implementation of the theme. The prices were too high tho, and resulted in a repetitive gameplay. beautiful game, well done!

eloraju 2023-01-09 10:53

Very nice! I kept pressing ESC when trying to exit the shop and that caused me to loose my progress a couple of times but despite that I kept playing. Really solid work for a compo!

paroxysmal 2023-01-09 13:15

@szieberth-adam Sorry to hear about the HTML version. I uploaded a new patched version for Windows that fixes the issue of not being able to start the game.

rickylee 2023-01-09 13:46

Played for a very looong time and I like it a lot! ^^ Im so bad so I couldn't beat it yet, but I'll come back after playing some more games and finish it

mayst 2023-01-09 14:41

appreciate the visuals!

szieberth-adam 2023-01-09 14:51

@paroxysmal Thanks, it works now. I already managed to buy some stuff :)

geraldfingburke 2023-01-09 15:35

28 days. This is the longest time I've spent on a single game in this jam. I would complain about how grindy it gets, but honestly if that was actually a problem, I would have stopped playing. The difficulty curve is great and the action ramps up as you get your upgrades. This is an incredibly well done entry. This is the kind of platformer I like to play outside of the context of jams and it's just absolutely solid in that regard. Well done!

adamwatters 2023-01-09 17:20

Would have liked for the in-game instructions to also reflect the keyboard inputs. I also think that the shift key is missing on the itch.io page. I liked the art style though, and the gameplay itself was quite enjoyable (even if the costs for some of the upgrades cost a bit much). Overall this was a really good game considering that it was made in only 48 hours. Well done.

the3rdhunter 2023-01-09 18:47

Great game. It's like a little pseudo-Metroidvania. I think the fork could use a bit bigger of a hitbox as it looked like sometimes the weapon sprite was overlapping the enemy, but it wouldn't register a hit. Of course, the hit box being that small made it more challenging to take harvest the enemies without getting hit yourself. Loved the retro look with the Gameboy styled sprites and the retro audio effects. There was some audio balancing issues as hitting the leaves seemed to be way louder than other effects. I also agree that some BG music would help make the game feel a little less grindy, but that's a lot of work for a compo game. And that's really a minor complaint considering how long I spent playing the game. Awesome work!!!

patsui 2023-01-09 20:32

I like the art and the variety in enemies and surroundings!

Sounds and gamefeel could be polished more.

Nice work!

ben-toosey 2023-01-09 21:09

Loving the GB artstyle. I struggled to navigate the controls because they were'nt what was dispalyed in the tutorial screen or the hints. But very cute, I had fun :)

kepsert 2023-01-09 22:01

Yooo what a lovely entry, right up my alley! I saw a post on my feed and immediately bookmarked your game in advance, glad I did!

- I might be biased as someone who loves these sort of palettes, but I LOVE the graphics. Brings me right back to the device I grew up with, they're well done, do what they need to do, and are simple amazing, great job! - The audio, totally great, too! I miss a little bit of music, which I assume you might've been able to add if it wasn't for a COMPO, so I can let this one slide haha. The sound effects were chef's kiss. - The gameplay was simple, responsive, and very smooth, not much to add here!

I did feel like it became a little bit of a grind and for some reason my head couldn't wrap around the "Items I own" vs "Required". I wonder if it would've been better to show what I was missing as well? It did take me a second to figure out what to do, I had a controller connected so I don't know if that altered the "How to play" screen, showing what keys to press, but I was actually playing on a keyboard, a bit confused pressing my A, b, and x buttons haha.

Great submission, thank you so much!

jujus 2023-01-09 22:06

Oooooh love this art style :)

samsface 2023-01-09 22:12

I like the Game boy art style. Pretty impressive game for the constraints.

avi 2023-01-09 22:50

Nice game! It was quite fun, and very impressive -- I wouldnt have been able to make something like this even if I had a month hahah

#### Some minor gameplay feedback:

Got initially stuck in the instructions menu on the itchio page: Screen Shot 2023-01-10 at 9.43.25 am.png

Had to re-load as I wasnt able to exit out -- maybe because i was pressing the wrong exit button?

Same issue with the shop.

Had a situation where the player character kept moving towards the right (even after I stopped pressing right on the keyboard), but this stopped once i fell into the pit.

phillip-scott 2023-01-09 23:38

great amount of content and like that it gradually unlocks - gets a little repetitive (especially when you get juggled on top of an enemy and insta die!) well done!

jellzilla 2023-01-10 00:40

Great art style!

I like going back out and exploring more of the world as I obtain items to unblock obstacles, but it feels like I have to grind the same region at least twice between every upgrade. Reducing item costs would be nice for showcasing a game jam entry.

jormarysky 2023-01-10 01:02

Controls are bit floaty for my taste and it is bit (or very) grindy. Could be nice game with better balance and level design.

Nice graphics, I like that Gameboy palette and this pixeling is about as good as it gets with the limitations of GB.

paroxysmal 2023-01-10 02:29

@avi Interesting issues. Left Shift exits out of the How to Play and the Shop. I have certainly underestimated the amount of people that play with the keyboard. I'll make sure it isn't an after thought in the next jam.

hypernoodlejon 2023-01-10 03:10

This was really fun! Absolutely beautiful pixel art. I think reducing the cost of the double jump would be nice, since not having it blocks you from most of the game. I had to grind through days for quite a while to afford it when I kept gettin' killed by that one blob in the tiny pit by the mushroom  Quite enjoyed the game though, gonna keep this one saved so I can play again in the future.

cloistered 2023-01-10 03:18

I am very expect in the start, until i stuck in shop....maybe my keyboard is broken.

paroxysmal 2023-01-10 03:21

@cloistered Left Shift exits the shop

cloistered 2023-01-10 03:28

@paroxysmal thanks~

passbykamenrider 2023-01-10 04:08

Love the art style! Somehow pressing B doesn't work on the web version, have to reload the page.

enad96 2023-01-10 07:17

Impressive use of the retro colour scheme, the particle effects of the smoke got me by surprise as the scene felt very gameboy.

bartalomew 2023-01-10 09:20

I loved the art style! Wish the game had music, but other aspects of it are so well polished it was a good call to prioritize the gameplay. super good entry!

yorsh 2023-01-10 21:26

Sweet game ! All those resources are nice, and the progression is cool too. I'm not a fan of the attack tho, too little range, and when spammed it doesn't register all the hits, which feels a bit weird.

danmerey 2023-01-10 23:34

Pixel art is well made, although color scheme is way too green / monochrome. It adds some charm for sure, but it's also not very UX-friendly to play.

Icons in UI for Upgrades are so small and look the same (also because of the color), so it's very hard to understand when you have enough of what resource (I'm player, I don't wanna think, game should help me with that :))

Idea with grinding and gathering resources to get upgrades is not new, but still very good one! Although the combat system is not very pleasant with controls, but needs a lot of polishing to be enjoyable and not frustrating. Also it's pretty easy to get 4-shotted in 1 seconds, since the invincibility time is very low.

Pixel-art texts is understandable desisiton, but really not the best way to give information with such a font (It's really hard to read anything).

I liked the graphics and the idea. Although some of the stuff will need a lot of polishing and playtesting if you decide to make it as full game. Still like this submission, good job!

P.S. I played with Xbox Controller.

olddog 2023-01-11 02:33

nice cute game, control feelings are great,,but with controller might have some bugs in button map(ps3 controller)

unentokku 2023-01-11 04:54

That first pit next to shop looked so much like you're meant to jump into it that I did it right away.

Graphics are great.

nyxkn 2023-01-11 16:13

Art and presentation is incredible! Very well done. Sound effects are on point but I think music is almost required for a game like this. Also sounds for menus and dialogs! It is strange to start a game and not hear anything just to get surprised when you jump. Adding extra sounds made with a generator is a super quick way of massively increasing immersion. Anyway, gameplay is alright but gets repetitive very soon. The glorious art is mainly what gets this game going but that only lasts for so long :) Overall excellent entry that just needs a bit more spice!

francois-dervaux 2023-01-11 17:01

The game is great, but the grind got the better of me. I didn't have the patience to finish the game, The art of the game is really cool, I love the retro side, the green of the screen and the square format.

mortith 2023-01-11 18:08

So nice, i love the atmosphere! The feeling is great, it really feels like a gameboy game ^^ (little attack hitbox, easy to die, enemies with no knockback)

duncan-3 2023-01-12 05:21

i feel like losing half of your resources is maybe a bit too harsh. losing all the resources you got during the day might work better as a punishment. i like the fact that the rocks start out as just a background element, but you're eventually able to harvest them.

arowx 2023-01-14 13:58

Great work. Found it odd/jarring that the mushrooms are background art you can just walkthough.

Got stuck early on is there a double jump or climbing ability I missed?

paroxysmal 2023-01-14 15:44

@arowx Flubber in the shop once crafted will let you double jump.

vidarn 2023-01-15 10:14

Nice colors and sound, and the game was easy to understand. I enjoyed unlocking new areas of the level by getting upgrades.

joror 2023-01-15 15:46

Cool graphical style, very consistent - I was a bit too impatient with my platforming and died a few times unnecessarily, slowing down the unlocking significantly. (this first unlock could have been a bit easier/faster just to demonstrate the mechanic)

Regardless, very nicely done!

patrickrmc 2023-01-27 19:30

I love games with limited color palettes like this one, solid game feels really finished. Good job!
