I made a simple game that had the theme, but it's good to know that there are requirements to run the game, I didn't know, it's part of the challenge I posed with UE5.
When you run the executable, the UE5 requirements will automatically install. It's also compatible with Linux through Proton.
I didn't know it was possible to use Unreal Engine 5 for a 2D pixel art game, but it's really interesting to see it in action!
@zyper I'm studying the issue a lot, the plugin is called Paper2D native to UE5, but we have PaperZ that brings more features like State Machines. If you need help with that, just say man... I learned during the event, you learn too.
The color palette is really nice, and the use of the theme is different from everything else. The gameplay is frustrating at first, but quickly becomes fun. Well done!
@she-wrote Thanks for the considerations, I promise I will try to improve! I'm glad you had a good time.
Short game but interesting what you can do with UE5 outside of 3D :)
Good job on learning UE5 ! :tada:
Thanks @gcake !!!
Bom jogo, muito interessante ver jogos desenvolvidos com UE5 em 2D!
@ccgpl se quiser uma ajuda só me dar ideia. Que bom que gostou, estou estudando muito o recurso.
A very simple little game, but the graphics a alright and the music is funky!
Good job learning UE5.
I like the graphic style and the music! The colors are different to what I normally see, cool! One of the few non-3D-UE5 games I have ever seen, cool. Crazy idea, ... harvesting humans. But maybe that's what aliens would do, if they see us just as a crop. Game play simple, but nice.
@itskdog Thanks for the compliment! @itzemii I'm glad you liked it, yes, it was quite an adventure doing 2D in Unreal... but it piqued me to do some research... I'm looking at a lot of threads about 2D games in Unreal after the event. And about what the aliens would do, I agree, I don't think they were going to talk kkkkk
You know what would be fun? The U.F.O. lights blinking in sync with the song, haha.
Great game!
@lex Yes, playing 80's mexican or spanish style music... i don't know, but a brazilian carnival song would go down well hehehe... thanks for playing.
What is the condition for winning? At my first play there was no humans left so I guessed that it was to abduct all of them, but then on the second game I didn't aduct all of them and still won xD I liked athe mood of the game ;-)
@island-jam-2-group-3 17 soldiers and you win or survive all the soldiers (there is a count variable), but for the time, I couldn't indicate that, analyzing it has a big BUG face, I admit, this part was ugly... sorry. Thanks for playing!
Interesting take on the theme and interesting to see Unreal used for 2D! Good color palette choice and interesting music! I was able to win after a third try. Once you understand what you're doing, it's pretty fun! But it was pretty confusing at the beginning - would be cool to have more different sprites for soldiers, because everyone looking the same made me think that the game was bugged somehow. Then I noticed that I had to harvest them and I understood. Nice entry! :)
@dzejpi thanks!
Unreal Engine for 2D is Unreal! 611MB, OMG!
Any chance you could build to webgl I think it's an option for Unreal?
Really like the colour palette. It is different, but also made it really easy to distinguish what things were and keep track of them at a glance.
My first run didn't go well, as I didn't realise I needed to abduct them, and I was definitely too heavy on the controls, but once I got those downpat, it was fun.
@szieberth-adam I tried to make the "shipping" version to reduce the size and optimize it, but this way generated many errors, it was my first attempt with UE5, I was challenged in this JAM, but sorry for the situation. @arowx I didn't see this kind of option, but honestly I don't know kkkkk. @veelivar Glad you liked the game and my arts, they are original, the whole game is! I'm glad you liked it!
Haha @lfreinoso ,it is not a problem at all, I know the engine has its load on itself. Was just funny really! I am also happy to see a proof of concept of a 2D game in UE.
The graphics are very nice, it sort of looks like a pixelated comic book which I really enjoy.
Interesting art style! I liked the game play though it took me a while to get the hang of it.
@jakobthequizguy and @mad-brokli Thanks for feedback!
To be able to do a 2D game in Unreal 5, is great accomplishment. Well done
A pretty simple and fun little game idea. I like the visuals, and it's always fun to see 2D games in unreal. The game could have used some music and sound effects. But overall a fun little jam game.
I Won. Cool little game with unusual gameplay. I like how the player manages the movement - really smooth, and hard at the same time because of the drag low value. You used a solid engine to do something (274Mo) which could be done using a little bit smaller template, but why not? I had fun dodging the bullets, shooting the bad soldier. Thank you for your feedback about my own game. I wish you the best ++
PS : I don't understand why I had a security alert in order to open a port on my firewall. I don't see any reason like a leaderboard or something else...
Congrats on making a complete compo entry with graphics sound and music, all in a new engine!
The high inertia on the player control was pretty cool - it's unusual and it forced me to plan a head for the slipperiness a little bit!
Unreal Engine meant a kind of annoying experience as a player: I had to install pre-requisites, agree to terms and conditions, and then when the game ran my firewall popped up a warning that the game was trying to export data over the network. That's a lot of overhead for an LD jam, and it's okay if ONE game makes me go uninstall software after, but if everybody did that it would be a very bad experience.
Not your fault, but just be aware that this is the consequence with that engine.
Anyway, nice job with a complete entry, it was fun little game to mess around with and I enjoyed the music, the slippy controls, and the hand-drawn art style. I won, and then I played a few more times until I won without taking a single hit!
@givit-game-studios and @jk5000 Thanks for the feecback and compliments! @geckoo1337 I can not tell you why security has activated with the game, but I believe it is because the version sent to JAM is development, because as commented, did not know very well to do the game kkkkk, sorry for that. @pkenney I'm glad you had fun, after that game I started to study more about the issue of 2D in the engine, about the problems faced, good to know, I didn't know about them, I appreciate the feedback.
huh never would have guessed its unreal engine. impressive to have graphics and sounds in compo game. its high enough inertia that is fun.
