This is one of the best games I have played in this jam thus far, and I have played quite a few! Exceptional work!

The graphics are smooth and crisp, conveying just enough info to make the game very engaging! The UI is intuitive and easy to use, a critical part of a game like this!

The story is riveting, the stakes high, and the the various actions are quite meaningful.

If I could improve one thing, it would be to have more random encounters, like the ambush, just with other types of events. Something to consider adding if you go for a full release!

Overall, one of the best games in Ludum Dare 50 and one I will return to play again!

Amazing Job!

Занятно. Хороший, атмосферный простой арт.

This game was awesome. I had a great time playing through with my rifle and encyclopaedia haha. Great job on the balancing, the game doesn't feel too hard nor too easy. Also, I really enjoyed the variety in the events and item.

Overall a really great game. Good work! Only negative I can think of is that the text is hard to read with the trees in front.

Best game so far. I hope it will get the attention it deserve. Great minimalistic dark and gloomy visuals, polished gameplay and balance, interesting texts.

WOW this was unexpectedly awesome! This was a very unique experience that was both fun and very polished. This is definitely one of the best games I've played in the jam so far. My only criticism is that its way too easy. I found myself worried about having enough food to make it to the end, but it really wasn't too much of an issue. Neither was running out of water or even getting ambushed.

I think you should get rid of the goal, and just make it a game where the player needs to survive as long as possible. For this change to work, the game needs to be a lot more difficult. Make the hunters get progressively faster, add more random encounters in the world, make rest more important and add a consequence for dropping below 0.

Overall though great job on this

I really like the idea and the core game loop. The story and the starting inventory system are nice touches. I could never manage to get through the game, because every time except once hunting and foraging got me nothing but wasted time, which I guess creates the brutal inevitability.

I realy enjoyed this game. Well done.

I was going to play one last game before bed... Unfortunately it was yours and I lost SO MUCH SLEEP! I played this for a LONG time. It's so hard, but really rewarding.

I read through the encyclopedia (I am unsure why it is yellow when choosing equipment. Perhaps since its part tutorial and part item?) But either way, that gave me so many ideas on load-outs to try.

I never really got too far, but I really enjoyed the gameplay. It's a dreary-dark Oregon Trail!

Wow where did that last hour go? This is such a cool game and super polished! First time around I didn't make it far and was constantly ambushed. Then I just made a run for it and kept moving and discovered the power of the bedroll. Movement really is life!

There's some solid potential here, but there are a lot of unexplained mechanics, so it took me a long time to figure out what is going on. I like the idea of balancing a number of resources while also having a limited amount of time and also trying to outrun an enemy force, and I think it can be exciting to feel like the enemy is catching up but you can outrun them for just a little longer and try to get to the goal.

I'll share some of my experience below:

The game starts by asking me to pick 5 items but it doesn't tell me what the items do. A short description of each would have been really helpful. On each day I am given a bunch of choices of things to do, but it took me a while to realize that I have a limited number of hours per day and to figure out why I would want to do each action. I kind of ended turn and performed actions at random initially to figure out what they do.

On my first playthrough I did not move at all and so the enemies quickly caught up to me. After I got hungry I tried to forage for food but the act of foraging kept getting interrupted by ambushes. As a result I died due to starvation because I had no food and could not forage.

On my second playthrough I started with canned food since I did not want to starve. I also tried moving and realized that this made me move right and so I can try to outrun the enemies and I can make progress toward the goal. I found that I could not open my canned food because I did not have a knife, and I don't think there is any way to craft a knife. I alternated moving and foraging and I was doing pretty well but when I was close to the goal I died of thirst because I did not realize that was a mechanic.

On my third playthrough I started with canned food and knife. I spammed move, ate my food, and I scavenged a little for more food and drink. I made it to the objective pretty easily, but I noticed that my rest value was negative 200. So I guess that moving causes rest to go down but I am allowed to move even if my rest value is already below 0. But I won so I'm happy enough with that :)

In my first playthrough I got to do the shooting minigame several times and it was kind of cool, but it felt unfair that I cannot shoot diagonally and it felt unfair how fast the enemies can move compared to me. One time an enemy came from straight above me and he just ran at me until he was on top of me. I couldn't shoot upwards and I couldn't outrun him and this was enough for me to become wounded.

I never found cookable food. Forage usually gave me berries and mushrooms which I ate directly. I thought plantains were sort of like bananas but it seems like they are bandages and not food.

I also had Map and Pocket watch, but they didn't seem to do anything. A lot of the random events seemed to be dangerous, so it seemed safest for me to choose the "do nothing" option for most of them

Also, on the progress screen where the player moves to the right, the player and enemy are implemented as UI sliders, and these can be dragged around with the mouse. I dragged these around at first because I didnt know what was going on and I was trying to figure out the controls. There is probably some way to make a slider not clickable.

Really cool idea. I like that when you reach the end the previous items were taken away. I thought it was a bit easy the first run through, but seeing how it progresses really makes me see how you have to strategize. Good job!

I love the mood of the game and the solid Oregon Trail style mechanics. I wish I could aim my shots similar to the enemies when ambushed. Overall I think you did a great job on the game, nice entry!

Brilliant game, you created something very atmospheric and tense with really simple graphics and audio. Great job!

phillip-scott 2022-04-21 19:56

Tense and fun - good job
