Amazing game! The graphics were awesome, and it felt really good to play - reminded me a bit of Titan Souls. The game never felt like it dragged or was too hard, and the boss fight at the end was a very nice surprise! The mechanic was pretty unique, but the lack of an ability to recall the arrow made missing a bit too punishing, so I ended up always shooting at point blank range, which kind of defeated the point of using a bow & arrow (although I liked the way that the boss prevented this tactic). Also, there were times where the enemies would go too low in the screen, prevent me from attack them even when I shot directly at them. Other than that, I really enjoyed it - excellent entry!

Nice particle effects, good movement, great gfx, great tutorial. No music, but the atmospheric sounds are perfect. Great spooky mood! Just the right amount of difficulty. The light mechanic adds a sense of urgency.

great game. the mood, art, and mechanics were top notch.
I loved the idea of a single magical arrow you needed to keep track of and retrieve. the encroaching darkness was a great touch and made you want to push forward.
the monsters were cool but when they spawned camped at the bonfire and killed me on revival it quickly became a deadend.
I would love to see this as a larger game, reminds me of Roguelight (https://managore.itch.io/roguelight) I wouldn't be surprised to see you towards the top of the list for art this Jam, best of luck!
splendid game! the art and fx are great, atmosphere too. i liked the gameplay and how you have to be constantly moving and shooting. actually, the art and the gameplay content really fit together, well done!

the game feel was pretty good with this game. shooting the bow, the fire sound. maybe missing a impact sound when the arrow hit. but other then that this was a fun game to play, nice job!
Nicely done, really fun, and tight controls. I kept forgetting I had the ability to roll and got killed off.

I dig it. The art is simple yet its stylized and it works really well. Game has nice atmosphere. Took me a second to figure out what to do, but then the gameplay was very smooth.
Good job.
This game had great ambience, and the mechanic played really well. I had a lot of fun while playing, too.
However, I feel like the ambush scenes at the bonfire (specifically the third one) were a bit too stacked against you. Maybe the roll mechanic would've made it easier, but I genuinely forgot it was a thing until I read one of the other comments here because after it's introduced, it sort of just fades into the background and doesn't need to be used, unlike the fire arrow mechanic which is essential to progression.
Creative use of light to satisfy the limited space theme! The art is beautiful and the mood is well-set by the lighting and the audio. The gameplay gets a bit stale, but it's nothing new features like more enemies couldn't fix. Well done!

On our first brainstorm, I almost picked an idea where the space would be limited by light. I'm glad to see a game where not only this idea was chosen, but it worked nicely too!

This is a really peak and top visual effects and game design in this game! I really like it, it's really fantastic, and I love this simple but obvious art style, I really enjoy it. Btw, after reading the comment, I realized I have the ability to roll, lol.

It feels good to play the game, but we die a bit too quickly in it. This one's among the best, in my opinion.
Great gameplay, a neat idea and very well executed. It's a little hard, but that's not a problem at all. I had some difficulty aiming, but I believe it's a matter of getting used to it. The game has a nice nostalgic feel.

Incredible game! Brilliant tutorial, fluid and creative gameplay, very polished. Probably the only "nitpick" is sometimes illumination lagged behind a bit (like with boss, you could walk up to him, almost die in darkness, shoot arrow in his big eye — and then game will take a solid second to adjust illumination to new level). Maybe intended, maybe not.
Superb submission!!

This was very well done! Great enemy defeated. The movement mechanics were satisfying, and I was very happy to see checkpoints in the form of the bonfires. The enemies were well designed with the telegraphing and confusing movement to make them a little more difficult to attack. The pacing was just right because I could go as fast or as slow as I needed or wanted to go. I had more trouble at the bonfires than with the great enemy, but I still enjoyed the fight. This game could be a winner with some more battle mechanics and a story.

solid entry! shooting the arrow and lighting the bonfires just feels so good.. nice job!
Best mood I've seen so far! The graphics and audio work really well together. I was doing so well until I shot the arrow off in the distance and had 2 wraiths on me :| Good job!
Love the atmosphere!
Sooooo well polished and well done. Great tutorial, great mood and great aesthetic. As soon as I did the first roll I knew we I was playing a good game. Great submission.

Really nice execution on almost everything. Mood is great, sound effects are really good (especially the bow attack), movement feels nice, and the art works well too. The final boss was properly challenging and made use of the mechanic well enough. The only issue I had was with the pacing, which IMO lasted a few bonfires too many without anything new to do, to the point where it got a bit boring in the middle. Other than that, everything else was fine and this was a good entry.

Very complete game! It has good gameplay, interesting mechanics, good visuals, good audio. Everything is well made. The mood is especially strong. It reminds me a lot of Roguelight, which use the same idea : https://managore.itch.io/roguelight

It was very addictive and fun to play, great game!
What an incredible experience, simply a game design class, there are so many aspects to be praised that I don't even know what to say! The sense of urgency created for the player with the issue of the fire always being about to end, the discreet driving carried out by the trees that can be set on fire, all these things made the game a really unique and memorable experience, congratulations!
Awesome game! Very simple and clear mechanics, quite challenging, satisfying final boss. The mood was awesome, graphics sounds and everything. Good job :)
I love the aesthetic and the core mechanic of shoot, create space, move, pickup, shoot is quite nice and gives the game a ceratain foundation, which I like. The roll mechanic and the enemies also work quite well.
One thing on the death part tho: Once you move out of the light it fades into the death screen even though I assumed I still made it out in time and even got back to litten up place. Maybe some animation/vignette creeping in more and more would be great to ease into the game over.
I was pleasantly surprised there was even a checkpoint system and once that I quite liked with those waves you have to defeat.
sooo: great Graphics, great core mechanic, nice atmospheric sound. Overall a really well crafted package, I like it!
WOW! I AM IMPRESSED! It's scary, it's beautiful and I want to keep playing forever! I like aesthetic and limited color palette. I like interface and that burning trees may stop burning. I love sounds and music! The whole brings amazing mood. It is really addictive, so I hope you will continue working on it, even though it is already perfect.

Awesome game! Incredible design.
An exceptionnal craft for a COMPO, this is very impressive.
Both gameplay and art are superb, you even could fit in a boss battle, nothing is amiss.
For 15 minutes I was playing the start of an indie game, not something crafted in 48h. Hats off to you.

I think this game concept would be incredibly fun to speedrun. Lots of chance for skill shots, optimizing paths through the darkness while minimizing the need to light trees on fire, etc. Really loved this game and the end game boss encounter was quite fun.

The game has a solid gameplay loop. I died at the end but so did the boss, so I'll consider it a bittersweet ending.
Incredible mood and gameplay, visuals and sfx were great too. This is outstanding !
i was stuck on the tutorial words part when it told me to shoot at trees to light them up, really didn't know what it meant since i kept on shooting, but not at the right trees
Excellent mood and theme handling. Very straight forward play and keeps the player moving. Great job!

Beautiful visuals and really fun gameplay! Parts of it reminded me of death's door :)
At the very start after i burnt the first tree, i was confused why i couldnt burn the other nearby trees (i only later realised that it was cause they didnt have leaves).
I was quite grateful for the bonfire-respawns :) So even if the enemies were challenging at times, i knew that I would be able to respawn again.
I tried a few times to get a 'perfect' speedrun in (without dying) but didnt quite make it haha! I think this would be interesting to see what speedrun times for this game could indeed be!
Really solid entry, especially for only 48 hours! The dodging and single-arrow combat felt very fluid. Reminded me of classic souls-like gameplay, but with the fresh twist of the limited space the light gives you. You even managed to pull off a very straight forward tutorial too. Nicely done!
easy controls, wonderful graphics, and fun gameplay!
Such an amazing game, it is so incredibly impressive with the graphics and gameplay!

Really nice game. Great atmosphere and tutorial. I like games that include the tutorial as you go and learn as you play. Nice submission
Feels very polished and fun to control. No bugs encountered, just as i thought it started getting repetetive a big boss battle showed up. This is really impressive for a game jam in my opinion, great job :D

This game is expertly done! The gfx, sound, overall mood, tutorial were amazing. Incredible work. [However I felt the repetitiveness a bit in some moments. Maybe some power progression would keep me engaged to grind a bit :)]
Congrats !!
Really nice game. Sometimes you can miss the arrow when you try to dodge roll into it, so it could have a little bit bigger pick up hitbox, otherwise excelent game
This game is amazing! I love the aesthetic and the mechanics are so well implemented. the movement and fighting feels so smooth. Great Job!

A simple concept pushed far and well ! The whole game was well executed and I was in the flow for the whole part, a lot of simple quality of life in the design, a short level design but with balance and ideas. Really great game !
This game is absolutely incredible! I love the atmosphere and the graphics. It's really fun!

I really liked the atmosphere, I would like to learn more about the game's lore. Pure enjoyment!
perfectly scoped jam game with a satisfying ending, well done!
Pretty good game! A decent challenge is hard to come by with Ludum Dare games, but there was definitely some Dark Souls energy to this one. Loved the moodiness of the game, although I echo what a few other people were saying regarding the bonfire fights getting repetitive pretty quickly. A few more enemy types could've made a lot of impact in breaking up the relative monotony.
Still, where issues exist, the rad ambiance makes up for it. Excellent work!

Great gamefeel really enjoy it, it works really well to shoot quickly between three and ennemies! Loved it!
I normally just try games for a few minutes but this had me play through it twice! Well done
Terrific concept, and well executed. I'm impressed with the simplicity. Well stylized art, solid sounds. I do wish there was a clearer sense of whether I was starting over entirely or going back to the last bonfire when clicking *restart*.
I did make it to the final boss, but when I died with just one eye left on my second attempt I felt unmotivated to try again--that's a *me* thing, I just hate boss fights. I obviously see their use as a cathartic challenge, it's simply not for me.
Great entry!

Perfect game! It's charming, challenging and wonderful. The only thing I would change is the velocity of roll on diagonal, that is greater than horizontal or vertical roll.

Great game. It catches me for more than 15 minutes. Great work!
Amazing entry! Probably the most tie I've played an entry. I think some more gameplay elements would have been awesome, as the gameplay got repetitive for me towards the end. The boss was super fun, and I enjoyed this game a lot!
I loved it! maybe a little bit more music would've been nice :P but It is a very good concept :)
That's a really creative interpretation of the theme, was really fun and kept me on my toes! The audio is really cool tool, the atmospheric burning sounds in the background with minimal music really complements the game.
phenomenal. most fun i've had so far with an entry. simple concept executed amazingly!!

Oh man, this is so good! That's incredible that you got this done in the compo timeframe. One of my favorite games of LD54, easily. The mood is wonderful, the combat is fun, and the laser-focus on one specific mechanic is such a smart choice. You should be very proud of this one!

This game is amazing! The mood category was made for games like this! The lighting mechanic combined with arrow combat and dashing is such a great experience. You made a great tutorial and I was hooked from start to end. The boss fight is a nice challenge. Truly outstanding! Kudos!
Whoa, I didn't notice until after playing that this was a compo game and was quite surprised! There's a lot of polish, the gameplay feels great, solid mechanics, even a boss fight!
Like some others, by the end of the game I totally forgot you could roll, haha. I guess that one's on me! I just got more practice with rapid-fire bow shots :)
Nice entry!
I got through most of the game, and I figured that I'd seen all the mechanics and polish you could throw into a 48 hour game jam. And then I found the final boss, and was pretty blown away. Really fun take on the theme, thanks for making!

The artistic style feels very cohesive, which isn't easy to accomplish in a jam! The main mechanic idea was interesting and fun -- I didn't manage to get too far, it seemed like misfiring the arrow punished you a lot because it went so far and the light extinguished so quickly, so maybe tuning that timing or adding special trees that burn longer could've been interesting. Great job!

Very professional game!)
The difficulty of this game felt just right! Only thing I woulda wished for is a slightly more dynamic camera, that follows the cursor (akin to Enter the Gungeon).
Very neat game! I like how minimalist the animations/aesthetic are yet they work so well! And while the idea is simple it is executed to near perfection! Also, very good tutorial which doesnt overstay its welcome!

What a game. The game itself is beautiful and is well designed with using one mechanic that is used for various different reasons.
But, I think the thing I love the most is the tutorial, great job at implementing it in the game and having the Player almost discover the tutorial themselves. Great job.

Artwork is excellent and creates a great atmosphere. and gameplay is also smooth. Hard to believe that it was created in just 48 hours.
The game has a very strong atmosphere, which is enhanced by many details such as the red eyes in the darkness and the sound of the bowstring when pulling the bow.
It's a really good game, well done!
This is amazing, especially for Compo. Gameplay is pretty fluid, the concept works, the artstyle and sound effects all provide good gameplay cues and create a good atmosphere... no notes, this is just awesome.
+1 to what many others have said -- great atmosphere, lovely visuals, smooth controls, nice tutorial, very well done!
What an incredible entry, I'm in awe! The controls and rolling mechanics are peak, very smooth and natural movement. The visual is perfect, from the lighting, animation, and the art itself. The burning sound is also good, but some piece of music would definitely add up to the atmosphere and mood even more. One thing I noticed is rolling diagonally is faster than horizontal and vertical, but it doesn't affect my experience too much however, just something too keep in mind.
Overall, you nailed every single thing of this game, extremely well done for a Compo submission!
Great work, the atmosphere is really well done, good pacing and art!

VERY nice job! The game is beautiful, the gameplay is smooth, and the theming is on point. Incredible job.
I dont feel like it fits the theme super well, since the darkness only soft-limits your space, but thats about my only critique. It's a great game, has good graphics, nice audio and most importantly, it's fun to play.
Beautiful game, super moody and feels awesome. Loved the tutorial.

Don't know what else to say. This was a fantastic game. Smooth gameplay, satisfying to shoot and roll, was interesting to have lighting as a dynamic (thought of something similar in my game but not as well executed), and tiny little story and boss to end it all off. Very well done definitely a fantastic entry!

Very nice concept! I like the dont starve idea that you can not be in the dark. The only thing I would change is making it so you don't instantly die when you run out of light on your torch, this way you can still have a little bit of a chance to try and get back to the light. Anyway, great game and had loads of fun.
I was not expecting such an involving combat system! Combined with lighting it makes for a quite nice game. Well done!
Super cool concept! Some details i really liked: You can quickly counter enemies if you hit them, missing creates a cool "oh shit" moment incentivising dodge rolling, the boss is super frantic despite being completely passive by just reflecting your arrows, you are pushed forward because fuel sources are limited. Super nice tutorial and very smooth gameplay! Stunning concept! Well done!

Sometimes we need references and leaders to admire and somewhat emulate. With this game, Xk is certainly one of them! It's an incredible game, accomplished in such a short time, thoroughly professional, and it has kept me hooked, eagerly wanting to see it through to the end! Astonishing!

A great game, the best I've seen at the moment in COMPO.
Very nice graphics and sound design leading to a really cool atmosphere. Very polished game. Why not having dodge also on right mouse button - at least for me I think this would be even more comfortable to use.

- The graphics were nice and the lighting was very atmospheric - I enjoyed the way the arrows bounced of off the boss, sometimes multiple times, one thing about that is when I was shooting there I sometimes was touching a tree and had the arrow land on it making me a little confused. - I think the burning enemy corpses could stay alight for a second longer, it was a tad hard to snipe enemies from afar pick the arrow and shoot a tree to have some light. It could also be a distance thing, if you shoot the enemy from afar you get more/longer light, shooting enemy up close means you get your arrow back faster, but it could also be so that the killed enemy light is shorter/smaller.

When you are the great enemy and all you do is chill while someone is killing you. (Maybe he just wants some space u know). Well, it's a really pretty game, seems ready to be further developed. Something about it reminded me of hyper light drifter, which is definitely a good thing

Super polished and the darkness and the sounds fit together extremely well! I was also surprised to find a boss at the end of the game considering this is a compo entry. The only negative thing to say that I felt a bit stressed the whole time I was playing this because you don't really get to rest but I guess that is by design. 😅
Overall an excellent entry! 💯
Finally a brilliant starter tutorial, without the need for those annoying dialogues. A great hands-on game design lesson here.
WOW. :open_mouth: So much polish. The mood, audio, atmosphere, color palette... amazing FX... all work so well together.
I love the little shake on the bow. Gives really nice feedback to firing.
Really incredible ramp into difficulty as well, and organically teaching the player at the start. The whole thing is so well done. :raised_hands:
I also love the how the red eyes show through in the dark. That was a nice touch.

Hey, I’m the host of the Ludum Dare score chasers tournament for this jam
Wanted to ask for score chasers if you were fine with me playing some gameplay of your game in the background in the waiting period. In the waiting period while a music track is playing itll cycle through gameplay from a bunch of different games in the background
@ategon yeah, no problem :thumbsup:
I just loved it! AWESOME game. Congratulations!
This is my favourite so far - the graphics are amazing, I just love the idea and the vibe. It's really beautiful. I hope you continue with this:)
The game plays great. The sound effects are really good. I didn't hear any music though. Maybe it's a bug or there isn't any yet.

I like the visual style a lot. The enemies are spooky, the light feels safe, and hitting an enemy is satisfying. It would be nice if the light faded a bit more gradually when a tree burnt out.
I got to a point where the trail was fading and most of the trees were not flammable and I died in the darkness because I couldn't figure out where to go next.

Great game ! The particles are placed smartly. The licht effect feels clean and responsive. Little pop on the player is just right.

cool idea! i really love the graphics, and the sound effects fit very well. i really like the idea of having only one arrow and when you fire it, you need to pick it back. that makes the game really fun to play. good job!
Beautiful! Getting light from killing enemies is a nice idea, great balance of risk and reward. Feels great to run into the dark, toward an enemy's glowing eyes as the light fades and hit it just as you're about to die. Enjoyed the new mechanics introduced by the final boss as well. Not a ton to criticize: enemies are sometimes able to "hide" inside of trees, so a little AOE on the arrow impact could prevent that — or maybe just have the enemies avoid trees in the first place. Feels good, plays good... good work!
This is a really cool, clever game, and the use of "limited space" as "limited safe space" (especially in the area where the trees thin out) is done super well. I'm not a fan of horror games, but I do love tension, and this game walks the line between both of those perfectly! Well done!

Taking into account this seems to be one of the more popular entries, I just had to take a look. Overall, this is a perfectly tight and well scoped game for a gamejam, nothing more, nothing else, and to that end, I think you deserve big props! While it trod a bit of old ground for me mechanically and stylistically, the fact that you single-handedly managed to crank in all of it in 48 should make you super proud. Good job!
The graphics in this game are most impressive. You have created a beautiful environment. The same goes for the sound effects. Certainly, a solid entry. The gameplay is unique as well, albeit too challenging for me to make much progress. Still, a remarkable game. Well done.
Great mood. I really like having only one arrow, it made everything very tense.

Woah, this is great!! The movement felt really smooth and nice, and comboing enemies is really satisfying! The spacing of the bonfires also felt just right to me, especially the last one, where you have enough time inbetween bonfires to memorize the layout and get into a groove, but where it's not frustrating or anything!
(And I really didn't expect a boss fight in the end either! Really nice stuff, especially as a compo entry!)
Pretty awesome, I have given full marks because i honestly don't know what I could crit haha.
A very good interpretation of the theme with amazing gameplay!
My favorite thing about this is that you can hold mouse click without your arrow and release it the moment you pick the arrow up, instantly shooting it. Made the gameplay really dynamic for me, and the trickshots I was doing this way made it really fun to play
This is gorgous. I had some difficulty aiming but thats a me problem. I also picked the idea where the space is limited by light but... the only thing I could say is I do learned a lot from your work. Well done!
The advantages of this game have already been written above. I will join what has been said. I'll just say one thing, this game deservedly received a large number of ratings.
Fantastic game! Thanks for sharing.
Great experience, good integrated tutorial, difficulty, theme use... really good!
Well done! Take a candy! :candy:

Enjoyed the game. The arrow setting fire was a fun effect and good introduction of the game mechanics.
This is a beautiful game. I love the way it works, and making the pines burn out faster than the oaks just adds that extra complication to things. Love it.

I love the wraith animations! It's so clear when they will attack, but it still stresses me out every time.
really incredible. everything is very satisfying and crisp and right. 5/5 across the board, no notes

Beautiful game. The only thing I could complain about is that the boss doesn't play well with a 1-ammo quiver; Titan Souls bosses are beautifully designed around this mechanic, but here's it's just a relatively mindless shoot–collect–repeat.
Extra props for the lack of contact damage. There is only one enemy type, but it works really well.
Ooh, a top-down souls like. I love the way the arrow is your main source of light. Very cool take on the theme, and the boss fight was a very cool twist.
The art is a perfect blend of creepy and readable (though I did get lost quite a bit on the section where the trail ends)
Solid work all around!
