LD53 — Delivery

Data Heist by hunttis 2023-05-01T03:40:04Z

Definitely could've benefited from tighter scope: a little more focus on making the movement mechanics smooth and buttery. I feel the health system made both the player and the enemies a bit more of bullet sponges than particularly enjoyable.

DELIVERATOR: Dual-Wielded Action by Netrunner Nobody 2023-05-01T04:45:10Z

The constantly moving visuals definitely make the game harder, but are a large part of what make the game work, in that it requires slightly more than a reflex of shooting anything that moves for success.

Glad you enjoyed the game!

DELIVERATOR: Dual-Wielded Action by Netrunner Nobody 2023-05-05T05:01:05Z

@yumykon thank you so much!!

the music bug really grinds my gears a lot as well, as i feel like it punishes people who really try to engage with the game and get good at it. i really wish i was allowed to edit my code after the 48 hour mark ,but alas. still, some small part of me - maybe the copey part - does sort of think it's cool that at some point the music shuts off and the massacre your on goes from being cool to creepy and disturbing

the sensitivity is definitely a bit high. i tweaked it back and forth a lot - but when i put it too low i created situations in which the player couldn't rotate fast enough to respond to an enemy, and so ultimately i erred on the side of higher than lower.

that aside, i'm really glad to hear you managed to both understand and enjoy what i tried so hard to convey!!

DELIVERATOR: Dual-Wielded Action by Netrunner Nobody 2023-05-05T05:03:40Z

@gmstochetto @raivk it's definitely a lot harder to get people to buy into what you're making when it's something both esoteric and with only really one way of approaching it. that's why so many AAA games these days are action-stealth-crafting-puzzle hybrids, with the idea that they're all very familiar and that a player will probably at least enjoy some of what's on that list.

i do think a version that takes longer than 48 hours to write could be a good idea, although i'm skeptical that people will appreciate these kinds of esoteric controls in the long-term

Special Delivery by niterich 2023-05-01T03:52:05Z

This is probably one of my favorite games so far!

I was mildly unenthusiastic when I saw the concept, because it felt fairly standard as to what one would expect from the theme of "delivery" - and that's true, the concept's nothing special. But the execution is great!

The difficulty is exactly where it needs to be - I never got a game over, but I always felt a little bit of pressure that failure was imminent. When that pressure arrived, a wry player could spot the occasional shortcut - ways to hop over fences, cute detours, ramps - which are oftentimes just useful enough to be worth noticing.

The music's good, the gameplay's good, you play as a disembodied, driverless motorcycle - great work, developer.

Neo City Express by Pedro Medeiros 2023-05-02T03:32:27Z

It's sort of like that old Flash game Multitask, except instead of trying to balance a ball you're trying not to crash a janky car, and instead of having to watch out for squares you're flirting with cute girls on Tinder.

10/10

Ray Ledger: Midnight Run by zantze 2023-05-01T06:30:12Z

Kickin' soundtrack, interesting skate mechanics, cool atmosphere. With that said, the game would've benefited substantially from a little more explanation. I'm still not entirely sure how to avoid the enemies.

Mystic Logistic by Ben Toosey 2023-05-01T17:58:45Z

Nice work! I like the music and the art quite a bit.

The Silver Fleet by KyleTheCoder 2023-05-01T04:23:01Z

I beat the game with a score of 28, but I still don't really know what I was doing or was supposed to be doing the entire time other than pressing space bar repeatedly.

Still, very good music and very cute graphics.

Devil's Corp by Neobit 2023-05-02T01:28:40Z

The art's lovely, the animations are great, and the music is great - so it's not surprising to see that most of the team are artists and musicians. There are some mild issues with the game's design, though: the enemies are so pathetic that you can essentially run circles around the enemies ad infinitum, and you essentially game-over yourself if you run out of ammo. Overall, an impressive achievement for something done in a measly three days!

Its All in the Delivery by Glove 2023-05-01T04:42:28Z

Here we go, my first five star rating of the night!

This is incredible. It's a unique twist on the theme 'delivery' that still very much fits. The art is buttery smooth, the voice font adds a lot to the atmosphere, the mechanics are functional and interesting - while also leading to funny results.

I think I would've maybe liked a bit more of it - but that's just a sign that the game is good, you know? Anyway, great work - I'd be happy to see this win the compo.

Le Laitier by Calcopod 2023-05-01T17:36:16Z

A platformer that oozes atmosphere and mood. Some of the mechanics could use some polish, and otherwise are in need of far more explanation than they're given - but that's not why we're here. We're here for the good music, the cool art, and the very satisfying sound effect whenever you make it to the end.

LD54 — Limited Space

Total Party Swipe by Sheepolution 2023-10-03T15:53:52Z

This is cute! There's a surprising amount of polish here: characters are animated, each have multiple different abilities, everything feels really smooth. The mechanics are a bit simple as a result of this: the game feels sort of like chess but with health bars. It also feels a lot like Into The Breach in some ways. The mechanic of shuffling everything around felt both original and satisfying. "Press tab to view the help screen" was also surprisingly thoughtful and came in handy later on.

I think probably the game's only real flaw is that even if you're not putting much thought into your strategy, you'll still probably win so long as you're using all of your attacks each turn. Healing is particularly overpowered, healing twenty points of health - far more than even multiple enemies would deal in a single turn. Thus, a player who's overly tactical might feel like their efforts aren't being properly rewarded.

Still, lovely game!

LIGHTDANCER by xk_the_name 2023-10-04T23:17:22Z

Pretty good game! A decent challenge is hard to come by with Ludum Dare games, but there was definitely some Dark Souls energy to this one. Loved the moodiness of the game, although I echo what a few other people were saying regarding the bonfire fights getting repetitive pretty quickly. A few more enemy types could've made a lot of impact in breaking up the relative monotony.

Still, where issues exist, the rad ambiance makes up for it. Excellent work!

Seagull Island | L'île aux Goélands by Seb_degraff 2023-10-03T22:29:47Z

Was meaning to give it a five minute try, ended up spending nearly an hour, transfixed, building a beautiful little port town. Excellent game.

Tiny Tour by Bugord 2023-10-03T21:50:47Z

This game had some particularly challenging puzzles, which is a sight for sore eyes. Excellent job to whoever designed the levels!

Lava Run — High Intensity Cave Escape by Netrunner Nobody 2023-10-02T23:20:23Z

@thejookerful Hello! You can wall-jump by holding the directional input (A/S) while jumping against a wall.

@its-capp Hello! Sorry to hear you're having trouble. There's tutorial text all around the earlier levels to help introduce you to new mechanics. Are you looking for the button in the right corner?

Lava Run — High Intensity Cave Escape by Netrunner Nobody 2023-10-02T23:30:09Z

@yndajas Hello! You can wall-jump by holding the directional input (A/S) while jumping against a wall. You'll need to alternate between left and right walljumps to continue doing so.

Going Up by Human Writes Code 2023-10-02T22:51:33Z

the game's relatively simple, but polished in a way that makes it the best of its category this ludum dare. the art style is gorgeous, and the little quips the characters make when you pick them up are comical. one additional point awarded for the wilheim scream.

excellent work!

Minimus Brainius by hulien22 2023-10-04T02:13:55Z

It's like a significantly better version of that one Jackbox game. Which is really impressive, because Jackbox is a multi-million dollar franchise and you guys made this in three days. This is also a decent competitor to Twitter, as the people you argue with in this game are far more coherent and logical.

Anyway, have some stars. Five of them, in fact.

Quicksand by Deruitda 2023-10-02T22:55:51Z

Not enough games with custom-acted voice acting these days. Props.

Could've used some clearer instruction - indicators and levels built around introducing the player to the mechanics would have benefited the game well.

Safe Space Passage by Kepsert 2023-10-04T23:44:26Z

Game is infuriating, but in a lovely sort of way. Love the art, the mood, and the "what if Celeste but Tetris" idea is pretty novel as well. Game is polished remarkably well, and limited mechanics are explored in a way that makes full use of the idea. Excellent work!

Parry Hotter and the Stilosopher’s Phone by osh.studio 2023-10-03T23:18:10Z

Really nice art, very polished game, and the music was a particularly funky choice - but the game mechanics are admittedly a bit lacking: the player has no agency over whether they win or lose, there's simply the optimal strategy of one-hit KOing as many enemies as possible and then using the remaining highest die to heal, and then block.

Still, the game showcases great artistic ability!

Apocalypse Mall by Don Juan Javier 2023-10-02T23:31:34Z

This is probably the only zombie game I've seen so far! Props for creativity.

Apocalypse Mall, first of all, has probably the most banging soundtrack I've heard in a Ludum Dare game, possibly ever. I have the game open in another tab as I write this review - I'm jamming to it as I write. Don Juan has some serious musical chops, and the art he made is noticeably pretty as well.

Speaking of having the game open in another tab, though: the way the pathfinding was programmed makes it pretty hard to lose this game, as enemies can frequently get stuck when trying to attack your players. The hunger mechanic means you can't just hide in a cheap corner the entire game, but it's still very much exploitable for the player's advantage.

Lovely work!

No Pockets by QaynDecim 2023-10-02T22:59:07Z

This was a creative idea! The game was a bit easy once you figured out how it worked, but this is the only game about theft I've seen in the jam so far, so definite props for novelty.
