LD46 — Keep it alive

Dad's Breath by Jungle 2020-04-21T04:10:18Z

The art reminded me a little bit of Earthbound. Kind of charming. Then again, I was evicted. Honestly, I would prefer a game that doesn't relate to our crazy world, but I appreciated the story anyway.

ADRENA-LINE by managore 2020-04-21T06:36:03Z

very polished and soothing game; the mechanics are immediately obvious and the levels are quick and exciting - although, it's possible that a level is generated such that you become trapped in an endless loop with no way out. stopped more runs than i would like. this would be a wonderful mobile game

Firekeeper by thomas-olsson 2020-04-21T05:11:14Z

this is great, the fire really "feels" alive; beautiful art. a really sinister atmosphere! great short game. it took me 3 restarts to realize you needed to pick up the planks to continue.

Keep IT alive by KebabuTurka 2020-04-21T07:21:45Z

i love Factorio, so this inspiring; unfortunately i couldn't figure out how to get it working well. some blocks, like the 1:1 splitter, do not appear to work and cannot be deleted once placed. i liked the graphics and the atmosphere, good attempt!

FabrikatrCorp by Beard or Die 2020-04-21T03:58:59Z

We're sure glad you're on the team! I was amused when I saw "Run slide deck" instead of "Play game"; I was also amazed at how accurate the sanity meter was when I don't even have a sanity meter installed.

Doomsday Deliveries by Human Writes Code 2020-04-21T07:07:45Z

unfortunately feels a bit flat, since the drone does not respond to physics; reading the text is a bit too distracting. couldn't tell if i was keeping the package delivery industry alive or the drone, but i did enjoy dropping packages on rooftops where they're hard to get :)

Relaxing Sarlacc Experience by Ekoxe 2020-04-21T06:49:10Z

of course the music was fantastic, and i loved watching the botatos slide down into the pit when you let them go right on the very edge

LifeLine by pomeroyb 2020-04-21T04:40:06Z

I bit too literal of an interpretation of the theme for my taste, but the gameplay was surprisingly creative and very difficult. I didn't get a sense of "staying on beat", at all, but the challenge was interesting. Some potential for a pleasant mobile game.

Whisper of the Flame by Zachary Rodrigue 2020-04-21T02:36:06Z

Needs some variety, and maybe a touch too bland on the theme, but the controls are comfortable and the level design was clever in places (especially when you need to use up some of your flame to progress)

Lil Monsters by Tyler Anders 2020-04-21T05:18:11Z

it was difficult for me to grab babies, and then i felt bad for throwing them. it's a cute art style. i was a bit disappointed in the backtracking, although it DID make the level feel a bit different - just maybe a bit more of a chore than fun though

Medic! Keep'em Alive by Robert Li 2020-04-21T02:30:39Z

The retro vibe is nice! You can make the game much easier by running to the right of the bullet spawn, and you're able to run offscreen.

Aphotic Aquatic by qqcs 2020-04-21T02:42:53Z

The repetitiveness of the dialog choices on the interim screens where you receive new fish to care for is undesirable, but the memory matching is surprisingly fun, and I like the little splashes of humor. I was able to get to 16.

DemonSpawn: Chicken of the Depths by ForgeronStudio 2020-04-21T04:30:12Z

I was wondering when the murder was going to start - glad it was the chicken. Unfortunately I got booted out of the level after shearing the candy sheep and that was too discouraging.

the ruins by ruby0x1 2020-04-21T04:56:59Z

desperately needs animations; the gameplay was interesting, but i felt like i was aimlessly wandering with a plant that hates me. at one point i fell forever, so my adventure stopped there

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Tempus Locus by MSiddeek 2020-10-19T17:58:18Z

I would love to see an expanded version with more story. The atmosphere was fantastic and there's clearly a lot of potential for puzzles/mechanics. The tutorial was almost clear enough for me but not quite there; the core idea that the window of time was related to the duration of the projectile was lost on me until a little over halfway through.

Break The Loop by paulhocker 2020-10-06T03:05:20Z

This was more challenging then it looked from the screenshots. There's a feeling that you're out of control at first but you can get pretty good at sniping the targets with some practice.

PolyFury by Dom Harris 2020-10-08T16:13:55Z

The sound effects were a little weak for me, the controls were too fast/coarse, and I was finding myself wanting to see a score or a timer or something for measuring progress. Otherwise it's a solid concept and I appreciated the telegraphing from the center shapes. Simple and enjoyable aesthetic.

PolyFury by Dom Harris 2020-10-08T16:14:03Z

Hoop Knight by lectvs 2020-10-06T05:01:54Z

Unique combat. I've never seen a mechanic like this before. It would be a little more exciting if there was some progression with the hoop mechanics (upgrades, abilities, damage modifiers, etc) and it would feel a bit better if there was a way to maintain the hoop momentum or maybe just preserve momentum a bit more after hits. It's very satisfying whipping it around, but just as disappointing when it stops in it's tracks. Very good!

TALLY MARKS by de3sol 2020-10-07T03:13:26Z

To be honest I cheated my way through the whole game (you can die and then throw your body at a wall while moving towards it to get on top of the wall) but it was beautiful and interesting and had a creepy discovery vibe that I enjoyed. I loved exploring the story and the level rather than solving the puzzles, but that was good fun for me so overall I enjoyed the experience.

Hyper Racer by X_Pilot 2020-10-06T03:20:56Z

This game looks really cool, but crashing into myself was a bit upsetting. Usually they are called ghosts because you pass through them. I didn't really get a sense I was racing anything, but it definitely gave me F-Zero vibes and I think there's potential for something cool if you dig a little deeper.

Escape from LAB 2635 by Rein 2020-10-09T20:48:14Z

@tenshi42 I agree. We were a bit too ambitious with the scope and we ran out of time to refine the controls, find suitable music, and fully skin all of the rooms. It's encouraging to see feedback like yours that validates some of my own concerns and the criticisms of others.

Escape from LAB 2635 by Rein 2020-10-11T04:34:08Z

@paulhocker the first room is definitely a little too hard, especially for an introduction room. There are checkpoints after you complete each room (there are 6 rooms in total). Dying is a mechanic of the game; dying helps you learn from your mistakes, or learn patterns, or gain insights into puzzles. I would like to encourage you and others who struggle with the first room to stick with it a little longer because you might enjoy the other puzzles / challenges that are ahead. In any case, I do agree with you and I consider it a lesson learned for the next event. Thanks for playing!

Stuck in a Soup Loop by Doot 2020-10-08T16:30:26Z

Great mood/vibe with the silly characters and the nod to dead-end jobs. Felt a lot like "simon says" but with soup and humor. Overall a nice aesthetic and was worth the time I spent playing it

Time Saver by Daniikk1012 2020-10-07T03:01:58Z

A little tutorial for the first kill would have helped so much (time bubble mechanics), but as a person who also has made some games, I know how far down the list that can go sometimes. Overall a neat idea but the frustration was difficult to get past.

BoreOut! by HOOLOP 2020-10-07T02:52:49Z

A little disappointed that hiding after being caught was not a thing. Made it a lot harder than I expected. I managed to kill about half of the employees after a few practice runs. Overall it was pretty innovative and is easy to relate to. Really fostered my disdain for upper management.

Looper - The Last Mission by Coding4rtist 2020-10-07T03:28:59Z

This was really good for a first try! Has a good balance of fun, dialogue, duration, strategy, and a somewhat macabre mood of killing yourself.

Strange Planet by tengusheath 2020-10-06T03:22:57Z

I like the simplicity and the difficulty curve. It has a cute atmosphere, and the humor while crude and simple is actually pretty funny to me. What the fuck are those? **Shoots for two weeks straight**

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Deepest Sword by Strega 2021-04-29T02:36:56Z

Is it in yet? OwO

You really do move in ways you never expected; there's movement strategies that kind of "emerge" out of necessity and frustration (Waggle the sword.) I think even more movement would have been more exciting, but overall it was a nice concept, more of a puzzle than I anticipated.

Dungeon Escape by Crazybot 2021-04-29T02:57:24Z

The axes, even with the audio hint, are frustrating. I think it would be helpful if the game had a sense of urgency, like a creature is chasing you through the dungeon. It would be nice if you could defend yourself from the rats. They would sometimes run away when shining the light on them, but not always, and they would get you from behind even if you were up against a wall. Other than that, I think there is potential here with a little more atmosphere. I didn't have much fun, but I liked the idea.

DownDrill by LarsDu 2021-04-29T02:04:30Z

The mechanics aren't actually too clear, but eventually I roughly figured out that the color and/or shape of the drill bit refers to the shapes. I seemed to lose points and get different sounds at times, and I wasn't sure why. It seemed like maybe some shapes were pulsing a little? If so, I think it was not obvious enough. I also felt like the pacing was a little slow. Unfortunately this game didn't do it for me, but it's definitely a game and I commend you for the accomplishment with so little time.

Lure of the Yamabiko by Nick Howard 2021-04-29T01:56:46Z

The game lacked a sense of progress for me: 1) dying is very beneficial, and upgrades are cheap enough that you can basically die quickly and then repeat, to get stronger quickly, and 2) bosses are random so you're not "conquering" a boss to progress to the next one. Maybe a checkpoint system and/or less randomness could help. The randomness really hampers the fun. Despite that, I played a lot longer than I intended to! This is a fun game it just needs some purpose and balance. :)

Falling Rock by snip_man 2021-04-29T03:07:27Z

It definitely feels like you're controlling a rock. It has inertia, and it can't jump. I kinda wish it looked more like a rock instead of a marble. At first it felt too low effort, but the level pacing and environments spiced it up a bit. I think you know the graphics need some love. Overall it wasn't my favorite experience, but this is indeed a game, and for a moment I was vibing and imagining what it's really like to tumble down a mountain.

LD49 — Unstable

Raccoon from the Moon by BinarySpark 2021-10-05T19:49:09Z

Very adorable. The controls were a little frustrating for me, but the atmosphere, the silly chattering, and the sense of purpose that only a Raccoon has, was wonderful. How many snacks are there? I found 108. :)

Unstabled by Rein 2021-10-06T16:21:25Z

@r3dleg you only got one star because there is only one star! great job! thank you for the kind review.

LD54 — Limited Space

LIGHTDANCER by xk_the_name 2023-10-03T03:57:50Z

This was very well done! Great enemy defeated. The movement mechanics were satisfying, and I was very happy to see checkpoints in the form of the bonfires. The enemies were well designed with the telegraphing and confusing movement to make them a little more difficult to attack. The pacing was just right because I could go as fast or as slow as I needed or wanted to go. I had more trouble at the bonfires than with the great enemy, but I still enjoyed the fight. This game could be a winner with some more battle mechanics and a story.

PELLET BOI by TechnoNugget 2023-10-03T03:45:12Z

This was a very clever concept! Also, hi fellow Rustacean! There is some really fun emergent gameplay that comes out of the white block behavior, where you're balancing shrinking your space with making efficient movements. I was able to get a score of 3000 before I ran out of space and green blocks stopped spawning. I think this could evolve into a neat puzzle game.

Packing by homeworld 2023-10-03T22:13:36Z

This is a unique game and the mood / atmosphere is quite spoopy and self-aware. The drudgery of the box stacking, story telling, and horror elements, are very clever pairings. The retro-esque graphics, especially the lighting effects, are amazing and really set the mood. You could tell the mechanics were properly designed and considered.

I found the character movement a bit too "floaty", and I would have preferred a stronger climax to the story. For example, watching the character becoming unhinged / frightened would have deepened the experience. The spooky entity kind of just stands around, and while it's haunting, the character doesn't really respond with the aspect of terror I would expect seeing something that spooky!

Fighting the physics engine was perhaps a blessing for this game, because it kept your attention and focus at the right level to be properly spooked, but perhaps there is some more balance to be had there.

Overall this was a wonderful game, especially for a jam, and I very much appreciated the sound design, graphics, story, atmosphere, and voice acting.

Sea Kelp Tower by HacksawUnit 2023-10-03T04:06:35Z

You might get this comment a lot, but this game is very difficult! A tutorial or some pacing would have helped quite a lot. I struggled to understand why collecting the "good stuff" did "bad things" to the character (not a bad mechanic, just confusing without in-game context). Anyway, excellent use of the theme, and impressive for a 48-hour project! It feels very retro, and I absolutely love it. My only other complaint is that arrow keys and Z/C are a bit unnatural to me as a person who mostly plays PC games.

My Limited Cell by RicardoBusta 2023-10-04T21:32:13Z

I don't think Godot 4.1 has an issue, it just requires SharedArrayBuffer. It wasn't required by Godot 3.5.x You can try embedding the game in Ludum Dare by attempting to apply the Godot fixups mentioned in embedding documentation: https://ludumdare.com/resources/guides/embedding. Itch.io also has support for games that require **SharedArrayBuffer** and **Cross Origin Isolation**. The fundamental issue though, is that you need to modify your web server to render the page in a **secure context**: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/SharedArrayBuffer

It's easier to patch the Godot export and upload to Ludum Dare, or just use itch.io, both of which do this already.

Tiny Factory by AncientEntity 2023-10-03T04:35:57Z

Routing things in factory games is one of the best parts about those games, and that's all there is in this game. Nice micro puzzle game. Would have liked to see a little more polish (corner belts) and perhaps some mechanic involving spending the money (points) accumulated, for some extra management aspect.

Turn it ! by Kaimon 2023-10-03T05:08:04Z

I appreciated the simplicity of the rotate mechanic, but unfortunately without additional constraints, you can stand on a block and move along with it pretty easily for most of the game. I didn't love the music, but it did fit the style of the game. The retro 2D aesthetic is lovely, and I noted you said you weren't really an artist, but I think you're wrong!

SHELL FACTOR by Dmitry Kaidash 2023-10-03T05:55:15Z

I love the retro-style graphics, and the gameplay and movement is very fun! I played this game longer than most. My only real complaint is that there are balance issues. If you wail on a crab for a minute and get a bat, it's quite strong and you can take out a crab with a sword, and after that you can pretty much wipe the field and just have to care about keeping a shell on your back. A neat step forward for this game would maybe be a Katamari Damacy style affair as you grow bigger.

Pipefitter by Abdul Zakkar 2023-10-03T22:33:21Z

Simple (in a good way), addictive, attractive, and definitely limited space. The pressure from the pipe generation is just the right amount. This is a very good micro puzzle game, and the only thing it's missing are sound effects and chip-tune music.

Blockade Burst 95 by OwlyCode 2023-10-04T19:54:25Z

Great work! It's awesome seeing a unique micro puzzle game, and this entry has the pieces of a quality game too (music, sfx, mood, objective). This is the way to do a Compo! True to the theme. The input on keyboard was a little too "tight", I would suggest making the place button use the other hand since the mouse is not needed for this game. A rotate mechanic could have also been interesting, but on some reflection might have incentivized quick matches to build up the combo which could potentially break the game.

Blockade Burst 95 by OwlyCode 2023-10-04T19:58:26Z

Oh, your GitHub link is present but the repository doesn't exist. :C

Blockade Burst 95 by OwlyCode 2023-10-04T19:59:26Z

@OwlyCode not sure how I missed the rotation mechanic. Thank you for the keyboard suggestions, I'll play it again for the correct experience. :)

Burger Blitz by Euix 2023-10-03T01:53:56Z

@wonkanese Thank you for the kind review. The source code is available on GitHub! I don't know how I made it in 3 days either. I spent a whole day working on a different game concept and it wasn't fun so I started over on Day 2. Let's just say I am in pain. Don't recommend it, lol!

Burger Blitz by Euix 2023-10-03T01:56:20Z

@duckwings I agree! There's a few directions I wanted to go in this regard, but I very much ran out of time to try any of the ideas I had. It sort of feels frenetic already, but more player pressure and some responsive energetic music could go a long way I think. I was trying to capture the vibe of "stress in the kitchen on a busy night"

Burger Blitz by Euix 2023-10-03T22:35:57Z

@limpch This game very badly needs a tutorial, but you should have been able to put the cutlet back from where you picked it up, or put it in the trash to the right of the prep table. Thank you for playing it!

Burger Blitz by Euix 2023-10-03T22:37:10Z

@hacknick The first few burgers are no meat to help ease you into the game, but the rest of them should have plenty!

Burger Blitz by Euix 2023-10-04T20:28:01Z

@zanagi I intended on having the chef have both hands, but ran out of time for that (and a nice tutorial, which is very much needed for this kind of game). It does add a challenge, but maybe not the best kind of challenge for a game. :)

Burger Blitz by Euix 2023-10-09T21:44:07Z

@nadia-pixel Intense and addictive ("always busy") was the vibe I was going for. As some others have said, I still feel like more "pressure" was needed though! For example, nothing is poking you with a stick pressuring you to cook those burgers other than that timer in the corner. The game really came together too late in the jam. I really wanted to focus on that! Thank you so much for the kind feedback and I am glad you enjoyed my game.

Burger Blitz by Euix 2023-10-09T21:45:34Z

@sofia-j I tried to prevent the spiderman camera, but looks like I didn't do it right. I couldn't replicate this in my desktop build, it seems to be a web thing (hehe), and I have no idea why because the math is pretty straightforward. :)

Riven by JunaGames 2023-10-03T05:34:39Z

Well done. Open waters but not really! The cannons were a bit frustrating because they moved very quickly. I also felt like I never had enough cannon balls so I was constantly avoiding the mini boats while (almost) dodging cannon balls, and hoping to find a duck or some wood so I could at least tank the hits. The music was exciting and "adventurous" and helped set the mood.

Pixel Piles by Gabriel Chan 2023-10-03T16:49:02Z

I'm not very good at the original "other block game", and I am even worse at this one, but I was impressed with the innovation. The character is cute. The music is lovely. My only real complaint is that bumping the sides to rotate is quite punishing. You don't have much time in between pieces to bump a side and scoot elsewhere to prepare the next piece, and often it's because you have to traverse uneven terrain. Perhaps that goes away with skill, though. Anyway, very nice remix of a classic!

Musk Vs Zuck for the GameJoy ( PLAY ON ITCH.IO LINK ) by Joymagine 2023-10-03T04:16:30Z

I would have preferred to whoop on Elon Musk tbh, but this was a fun little game. Good choice minimizing the scope. The extra effort of putting the Gamejoy around the viewport was a nice touch for the mood. I found that if you back the little guy into the corner he stops trying to hurt you. :)

This is fine by Vincent7 2023-10-03T22:00:51Z

This game looks quite attractive, but could use some balance. The fire spreads very quickly / broadly, and the abilities are not sufficient (at least not obviously) to contain the fire. I managed to survive for around 30 turns on average. Some mechanics that could have helped are ability upgrades, not penalizing movement, wider area of effect, or ability chaining / combos.

Prickle by Kultuk 2023-10-04T21:24:08Z

Made with Godot! The characters are adorable and the puzzles are just the right level of fun. Like a good game it starts you off easy and increases the challenge as you progress. The game has a distinct style and it suits the game, same with the sound effects! The cheering is cute. My only complaint is I would have preferred a different UX when you attempt to rotate, but the rotation is not allowed. Perhaps a "negative" sound effect followed by characters shaking, or a visible X, or something to that effect. The way the game plays now, it tricks you for a short moment to think the rotation may happen, but you do get used to it. Very good work!

Purrrgatory by lumie 2023-10-03T01:17:02Z

Good work for your first jam! Releasing anything at all is a feat. For me the game was too difficult and lacked skill elements. There are too many ghosts too quickly and you lose the game right away. It could be a better game if you engaged a difficulty ramp, and included some predictable patterns to the cats so the player can use skill instead of luck.

Unsquished by RogerW 2023-10-03T05:22:16Z

Great visual direction and the game was fun and challenging at times! Would have liked to see some different mechanics at each "ascension" into a different space. The music is absolutely awesome and I kept playing just to listen to it. I had top score for a brief moment!

Unsquished by RogerW 2023-10-07T04:49:46Z

@benisu The GitHub source link reports 404 not found, did you perhaps leave the repo private?

Packed to the Gills by npckc 2023-10-03T04:30:02Z

Adorable, and the art and music is lovely. I really struggled in general (at first), and I could never understand the jellyfish for some reason. I stole every single train. I thought I had to wait a bit, nope. Tried to choose a position where they could fit too, nope. Anyway, I still very much enjoyed the game, the little poetry bits, and the credits scroller at the end was cool to see in a jam game. :)

ASAP by Stevie257 2023-10-03T04:56:51Z

Excellent puzzle game, really taking advantage of the theme here. I found the difficulty ramp to be a little off, but overall I enjoyed the game. The objectives are a nice idea; would be nice to see bonus objectives or hidden objectives too.

It Gazes Back by Sylvic 2023-10-03T02:20:54Z

The art is very stylistic and macabre. I found the story a bit confusing and disturbing at times, but the whole space Cthulu vibe is pretty sweet. I knew something was up with Alan! Unfortunately I couldn't complete the game because of a crash once I met up with Logan: I'm sorry, but an uncaught exception occurred.

While running game code: File "game/level3.rpy", line 451, in script "It was a small group, probably around 20 people, less than 10% of the total crewmembers." TypeError: %o format: an integer is required, not TagQuotingDict

Cursed Shadows by Wonkanese 2023-10-03T05:41:53Z

I found this game very, very difficult, and the music was a little irritating (sorry!), but despite that, this is a decent game for your first game jam game! For future works I would suggest a difficulty ramp. The tutorial was very helpful and a great idea. It's not necessary to put every coin in the player's forward path, but it helps the flow of a game when the player doesn't have to spend a bunch of time collecting everything they see in order to progress successfully.

Crime Critters (Rob the British Museum) by Pen Island Games 2023-10-03T01:48:57Z

The art is wonderful and the movement feels great. Sometimes the value deductions felt unfair (physics is often 'unfair'). It would have been nice to see the raccoon have some following AI if you didn't have a friend to play with, but it's fantastic to have a co-op feature in a game jam. Some jazzy mission impossible action music would suit this game well.

Mindwipe by NKooo 2023-10-03T01:31:54Z

Fits the theme, and I appreciate the narrative concept. I liked the upgrade aspect, but unfortunately the game would often generate the same powerup multiple times in the same wave ('wasting a choice'), and it was unfortunate losing access to power ups and weapons when picking up a different powerup of the same type; roguelikes where you become ultrapowerful are hard to balance but very fun. Also, the enemies would often spawn on top of each or push themselves into corners (especially the scientists, although they aren't "enemies"). Overall it was a decent shooter and I am a big fan of the android / robot escape idea.

Pocket Universe Snake by TheLastSlowpoke 2023-10-03T05:15:37Z

Ekans! I'll be honest the chromatic aberration on the edges really messed with my eyes, but this Snake remix was actually really cool. The ground proximity coloring is a very nice effect. The start "button" was actually pretty confusing. It's only clear it's a button when you hover over it. I desired sound effects and music / ambience.
