LD54 — Limited Space

Spellfire by quadtree 2023-10-17T01:51:47Z

Very interesting grid based card battler. I like that idea quite a bit. Lacking some polish (the audio is quite annoying) for sure, but there's a solid idea there.

Obviously in a full version, you'd be building a deck as you went along, and maybe even building a grid. I think adding rogue-like elements could be quite fun in this format.

The game as-is has some balance issues, as is to be expected from a jam game, and it's a little confusing. Particularly, I wasn't sure how my grid matched up with the other side's at a glance. That should be made more intuitive somehow. Also, I was never quite sure which reaction cards I would have available until I ended my main phase, and I also didn't quite understand if cards refreshed or I drew more or if when I used them they were gone forever, etc.

Always fun when card games use physical space as an element, and this is a version of that I haven't seen before. I wonder if you might consider making the grid more literal, as in representing it as soldiers on a battlefield or something. That might make it make a bit more sense, bc right now casting your spells in a grid doesn't make the most intuitive sense.

This is a very cool central concept that could really be something special with more refinement and a few more iterations on the core idea. Nice :)

Wings over Bagel Bay by madjackmcmad 2023-10-20T18:44:31Z

This game SLAPS! I should have read the how-to cause I had no idea for a bit that you can transform into a boat haha. but damnnn that boat to plane transformation is *chefs kiss*. For a Compo this is seriously impressive! I don't know how you managed to fit in so many features. You should be super proud!

Tiny Island by ghpxi 2023-10-17T01:32:16Z

This game is fun as hell. Love the simple art style, the card mechanics feel good, and it's very pleasing to build up your island. The pre-jam version is super easy, but that's something you can iron out in the time to come. This game loop is satisfying and addictive, you really should do more with this

POST JAM THOUGHTS: I actually don't like this one as much at the moment. I don't like how mines and sawmills are useless once they get built (?) I also really don't like how the houses and fields only synergies with themselves, instead of incentivizing you to place structures next to one another. Overall, the decision making in the post jam seemed less compelling so far. I like the addition of obstacles on the islands. Some of the island cards should come with obstacles preinstalled. Some of the buildings should be different shapes. You should check out the boardgames TINY TOWNS. I think It might really inspire you, as its about building on a grid, and has different buildings with adjacency effects that are all super interesting.

Definitely going to be keeping my eye on this one. Super fun.

Adrift by Coda Highland 2023-10-03T00:21:22Z

Super cute visual style! I loved the almost watercolor look to the visuals. Unfortunately, I was pretty confused, and couldn't figure out what to do. I got some rocks, refined them, but it wasn't clear how to get from that stage to building components, and the game design didn't make it super clear. I liked the emphasis on chemistry and combining objects! I would recommend making it clearer to the player how to achieve their goals and less trial-error. I wasn't sure if copper or water/etc was valuable, or why I should be collecting/synthesizing/crafting with them.

Limited Ssssspace by Quoclon 2023-10-06T07:18:13Z

I was actually surprised with how responsive the character was given his motion. I went all homing and just had fun mapping efficient lines as items were dropping. Fun game!

Kefnac, the Word Grid Game by Greytyphoon 2023-10-20T06:35:14Z

I managed to clear the grid! Super fun little game. I always found it kind of weird when I could create words via adjacency that weren't words. It always felt kind of "wrong"

Also, it was pretty finnicky trying to place words where I wanted them.

With some minor adjustments, I bet this could be a satisfying grid based time killer similar to minesweeper. Nice word game :)

Seagull Island | L'île aux Goélands by Seb_degraff 2023-10-11T17:39:07Z

I found myself wishing I had this on my iPhone to pull out on the train, or while standing in line. It's the perfect lightweight game, you should consider building it for that platform! My highscore was 84. There was definitely some strategy in leaving yourself open columns, in trying to get rid of the "embellishment" pieces as much as possible without compromising your build space. But I felt that you were overall pretty dependent on luck. I think that's not such a bad thing, as this is designed to be played quickly and in a relaxed way. Excellent job, would def buy on mobile.

Societies Stranding by UnitedFailures 2023-10-09T23:07:32Z

That was fun! I especially liked flinging the pods across the map to the planets as an extra challenge (using the mini-map to line things up). Good job! Maybe consider a pause screen for sound/music control in your post-jam!

Compress(space) by Fahim Faysal 2023-10-06T23:22:54Z

Not enough levels!! I had a blast playing and I loved the simple yet polished art. I do wish there was maybe some coyote time and that the lines snapped to the mouses closest line instead of the top-left lines of the grid (if that makes sense). Overall great submission!

Screen Shot 2023-10-19 at 8.59.35 PM.png

Had some graphical glitches on my end, but I managed to beat the game! The last level was challenging and fun. Pretty simple, but fun game. Might be fun to use this system as a ship building minigame in a larger game. Try and fit everything you can onto your grid, then try and beat the level with it.

Limited Larry and the Lost Intern by Achiru 2023-10-16T21:02:15Z

I really LOVE the idea of the memory system. It is super cheeky, innovative, and fun. One thing I didn't love is that it was impossible to fit "the mission" at all without getting rid of your memories of your wife. So you have to make such a gut wrenching decision without even really playing much of the game yet. I basically got rid of all my previous memories right away, which I think makes it hit less hard than if you're slowly sacrificing them over the course of the game.

It reminded me of disco Elysium, but the mechanic here is actually quite different. I think this core concept here is totally worth exploring

I didn't care much for the writing style, to be honest. I found the jokes didn't land very often, I didn't care too much about what was happening, and I didn't find the characters or mystery to be very compelling. Creepy doctor, hot receptionist, etc, it all felt kind of broad to me.

I understand your stance on AI, but I disagree. I don't like the style, I don't respect AI art, and I'm giving one star for graphics. As an artist, I'm opposed to it on a lot of levels, but mostly, it just doesn't look good. You guys have a pretty big team, I'm sure you could have made something yourself.

Overall, I think you have an absolutely brilliant core concept here, just a lot the execution on that concept is lacking for me. Writing a compelling mystery over the course of a game jam is super difficult, and with that constraint considered, it's a pretty solid attempt. You guys definitely went super ambitious and I respect that. I would love to see this concept expanded with real art, and more refined writing. This could absolutely be the kernel for a larger game - the idea of memories as your inventory is clever af. Keep working at this one!

Candy Catcher by HagamosVideojuegos 2023-10-09T22:39:59Z

What a submission! Incredibly polished and equal parts fun and frustrating! Those hi scores are ridiculous! The absolute only thing I wish was different was that the game window was bigger because I'm constantly moving my mouse off the game window and losing control over the hand. This leaves you a pretty small area to manipulate the hand in the bottom right of the screen when digging. Other than that it was the complete package! Great job :)

SHELL FACTOR by Dmitry Kaidash 2023-10-03T06:17:46Z

Suuuuper fun game! I loved how low to the ground you were. Very clever alternative shells. It felt really snappy, and the visuals were cute af as well. I really love this theme. Hermit crabs as a use of limited space is a fun twist on the theme, and I could definitely see this concept expanded, especially in a multiplayer setting, with some humans and lots of bots. Plus many more weapons. That would be a sick party game.

Some problems with game balance: I was never able to upgrade shells. I assume it's the red bar on the top that makes you get bigger? But I never passed level 1 before a bird grabbed me, which felt random. Also, it took me forever to kill my first hermit crab, as the default punch with no weapon is really weak, and I had to really focus in on one crab to get their weapon, which the game didn't tell me I should be doing.

Overall, fun, unique, and fast paced. Some problems with balance and making game systems clear, but those are p easy to fix up in a post jam setting. I'll be watching this one!

Whack-a-Soul by JavaSaurus 2023-10-09T23:47:53Z

What a great game :D SUPER clever game loop. I love when simplicity is executed so well and with so much attention to detail and polish. I definitely found it easier when the "island" got much smaller since it was easier to manage. Though, I did notice it seemed like souls stopped spawning when the playing field got small enough? Amazing submission!

Haxwell Modem: Beyond the Firewall by shaner421 2023-10-06T07:45:50Z

This was seriously a lot of fun! Good job nailing the theme on 2 fronts, and the parry became super satisfying after applying the different modules. The only major thing missing imo was a health bar/indicator. I did finally notice the color changing when i let myself die but I still didn't know which color would be my last. Otherwise really fun mechanics and theme application!

If I Fits, I Sits! by cheesepencil 2023-10-15T00:54:44Z

Man, this is the perfect jam game concept. Such a simple concept, fits the theme, polished and satisfying to play.

Even though it's quite simple, I think a *slightly* more developed version of this, maybe with some obstacles or different shaped cats/boxes etc, would be an excellent time killer on mobile.

Even divorced from the limited space theme, this is just a very appealing and marketable concept. I think it'd do well.

The Rock by Fupi 2023-10-15T00:35:58Z

This game rules! It's no wonder so many people left such detailed comments here.

The writing here is obviously its greatest strength. It's soooo charming, and manages to convey themes without being overly formal at all. It has a sort of undertale or adventure time quality to it, where larger themes are being conveyed through casual nonsense. All the characters were super memorable, even though they only have typically one or two scenes.

As a lot of people have already said, the graphics are also weirdly super charming? They really match the tone of the writing, managing to be super cute and effective while retaining that informal, nonsense vibe the writing conveys. Great job creating a unique style with what you had, in limited time.

Regarding the theme, while the rock was technically "limited space" in that the major couldn't build there, I felt the narrative themes of the game had much more to do with tradition and nostalgia versus progress and development. And mechanically, there was really no limited space element to be had here. It would have been nice to see some gameplay quirk regarding limited space.

I also wish that there was an alternate ending for doing the "right thing", or even an alternate set of consequences! The end feels a little heavy handed to me. Maybe you see how the island changes in the end, whether you destroyed the rock or not. There are probably some pros and cons to both paths. Destroy the rock, the island grows and becomes more prosperous, but less unique. Leave, and the island retains its charm, but kids slowly move away, looking for greater opportunities. Obviously this has a larger scope, but I don't love when games really only give you one viable pathway and then scold you for taking it.

Overall though, this game is held up by its absolutely INCREDIBLE writing. You should make narrative adventures, I have no doubt they'd super successful. You have an authorial voice that's undeniable, and I'll definitely be following you on itch.

Loved the game! :)

Though I Walk by AdamCYounis 2023-10-20T07:04:41Z

Lol, using parallax scrolling as a game mechanic is such a game designer idea - genius. This game is pure vibes. Even with basically no story to speak of, it manages to evoke a sense of mystery and loneliness. I liked playing with perspective, but I did find that switching between my player and his little perspective changing sprite felt clunky and slow at times. Have you considered using mouse input to change perspective?

I feel like there's a ton of depth in this mechanic waiting to be explored should you choose to. Really fun and beautiful entry.

Space Inserters by Jeff Kerman 2023-10-17T01:04:28Z

As other raters have alluded, some more detailed instructions would be great. I did eventually figure out that I was supposed to add my own letters, and I had a good bit of fun! I love the minimal theming, for one. It definitely tickled my brain trying to think of words. However, I found it a little unbalanced.

If I have the letter A, I can just separate that out and type ANTIDISENESTABLISHMENTARIANISM and get a million points. The more interesting part of the game seems to be using your spaces efficiently and in the right places, but what you're being REWARDED for is how long the longest words you know are. Also, I really wished you could add letters, and then move forward in a word, without having to add a space. Maybe that would make it too easy?

Overall, this Is a great concept, and I think worth exploring further. Some balance tweaks need to be made, but this is a strong and unique platform for a word game. Very impressive :v:

EDIT: I went back and played the daily, and I think that in that format, your contraints and point systems make a lot more sense to me. I had a blast with that more finite mode and will be updating my score

Boo! Bark! by Doot 2023-10-10T04:03:56Z

What a clever mechanic! I love when games combine mechanics in super clever ways and how you dodge and attack with the same movement system is a perfect example. Plus its super satisfying to slingshot! I also love how the "health" is just your owners fear level. Really great submission

RAMpage by Blue Pin Studio 2023-10-03T01:19:18Z

Yooo It's not usually the genre of game I gravitate towards, yet I honestly think I had as much fun just randomly placing files and watching them battle than someone strategizing lol. That background is sooo satisfying and the music and juice were *chefs kiss*.

Great game!

What to leave behind? by Owinmowe 2023-10-03T00:11:41Z

Really gorgeous art! This is a small game, but that intimacy kind of suits it. It was nice to read all the prompts for each item, and having your character reminisce about each object after you pack them all up was a great touch. I felt that it could have used a more definitive "ending". Maybe one extra screen, showing a a moving truck and wrapping up the experience of the move/summarizing the theme of choosing which memories to bring with you with a little text blurb.

Mechanizyn by Lincolnsalles 2023-10-20T16:25:13Z

Very creepy and awful. It instills a sense of dread. The character dropping like a stone as it flaps its useless wings, while not super *fun* does instill a sense of being a cobbled together monster that I think you were going for.

It's very short, and wasn't particularly challenging for me, but based on the vibes and your drawings, I'm sure this could be something special if you keep working on it. You have a very interesting vision.

Mechanizyn by Lincolnsalles 2023-10-20T17:53:42Z

Starting is the hardest part! ....Well, finishing is probably the hardest part, but starting is really hard too! This game already feels like a really unique vibe, I'm excited to see where you take it, should you continue after the jam :)

Critical Core by Benjamin Halko 2023-10-10T03:55:41Z

Finally got around to playing this beauty of a game! At this point it goes without saying that you did an amazing job with all aspects of the game. I do agree with @adamcyounis and his feedback , but that didnt stop me from getting sucked in and getting 8th on the leaderboard! I'll be back for more! :fork_and_knife:

Witch Contractor 2 by alpacalypse 2023-10-20T04:23:11Z

I didn't really feel like I had much time to shoot enemies before the tiles collapsed around me. Overall, I was somewhat confused. Figuring out how to collect all the treasure while navigating the collapsing tiles was pretty fun though.

The One by smiley405 2023-10-06T08:01:26Z

I love this style of pixel art and your execution. Especially those animations! I do wish you had done more around the theme, like having the floor give way and rise in pillars forcing you to jump between them while continuing to fight for instance. Still had fun as is! You should flush it out some more, lots of great feedback in your comments :)

Pudding by DR_Felice 2023-10-10T04:15:08Z

Very clever how you essentially made 2 games for the price of 1! Others have pointed out that it seems the best method in the end is to just let everything fall straight and same goes for the stomach, except for occasionally rotating an item 90deg. But that's pretty easy to overlook with limited time to play-test and should be pretty easy to fix if you were to continue to develop this! I also really like the info-graphic style tutorial. Great submission!

Corporate Courier Deluxe by JuanRod707 2023-10-06T07:27:55Z

I eventually came to realize this probably goes on forever when I couldn't see the elevator floor anymore xD. Like others have said, great job with the atmosphere. I do wish i could have made it fullscreen but that might have just been an issue on my end. Great game!

Shattered Spirits by Tobius 2023-10-06T08:14:26Z

That was fun! Animating the characters between tiles would have really elevated it for me, especially to go with those super satisfying swaying trees. Or even having the disappearing tiles drop away. Like many have pointed out, VERY pretty art! I enjoyed playing :)

Outland Escape by Spike Studio 2023-10-10T02:51:45Z

Finally got around to actually playing it myself after seeing it on so many streams ! And its just as fun to play as it is to watch! Love all the polish and juice, fantastic submission!

Screen Shot 2023-10-19 at 9.14.26 PM.png

Fun juggling the increasingly large list of cities. I never truly felt overwhelmed though, even by the end. I think this game would be improved with a bigger sense of urgency. The new packages just kind of wait for you to sort out your pile, and the "end of shift" timer is too large scale to make you feel panicked / overwhelmed.

Nonetheless, figuring out how to organize your packages once things start getting hairy was fun. I'd like to see a level 2 of this.

Prickle by Kultuk 2023-10-16T21:21:40Z

Wow what a great core mechanic! It's super simple, and yet some of the later puzzles were actually quite brain bending O:

I can only imagine how far you could bring this if you had hedgehogs that had different effects, different shapes even? as well as a few more obstacle types or collectables

Overall just a very pleasantly simple concept with a lot of potential for expansion. And as I said on your blog post, you just knocked it out of the park on the art style. Looking at your other games, it seems you're finding your style game after game by going more minimal - it's working out for you, keep that up.

This would be a lovely little mobile puzzle game with some more levels and a few more mechanics. I have basically no criticisms.

Excellent work :)

Airpansion by Beeb GameCodeCompany 2023-10-15T02:30:39Z

charming cutscenes. Very methodical gameplay, retracing your steps every day, which I think adds to the vibe you're going for. Having cutscenes in a Jam game is impressive af. Gameplay wise, I didn't feel super challenged, and for a game that mostly relies on movement and item interaction, those systems didn't feel super satisfying, weighty, or well tuned to me. In a game where you do so much walking, I think it would benefit you to make the movement more satisfying. Tuning those curves about how fast the character skids to a stop, gains momentum, etc.

Limited Spacebar by IngeniousPhoenix 2023-10-20T16:33:50Z

I didn't expect to have so much fun playing this. Movement felt good, the amount of time that the lasers forecast before they "activate" felt fair, but challenging. I really liked how the level sped up as you went, and even the music sped up. Nice touch.

I found myself never refilling my dashes, and instead opting for more health or faster speed (why go fast somteimtes when you can go fast all the time)

I think it might be more balanced if you put the dash refills in the level itself, as something else to collect. Also, making the dash both act and also *feel* more powerful, with clear invincibility frames and cool blurring effects would have helped as well with the central mechanic.

Very fun :) you have a good instinct for the fine tuning of these mechanics.

Space traffic controller by rej 2023-10-20T03:58:21Z

Pretty fun! I wish there was more incentive to cross the linear paths of the satellites, the optimal strategy (concentric circles and parallel lines on opposite sides of the screen) is pretty immediately clear. Even considering that though, managing to get your satellites into that neat organization is a lot harder than it seems.

Super fun game that could use an additional wrinkle to increase chaos

Flappy Bat by vfrabasil 2023-10-15T02:13:56Z

yep, that's a cute lil' bat alright. Not much else to this one. I'd like to see a more original game with this beautiful art!

Plummy's Tummy by Little Doctor Games 2023-10-09T23:32:05Z

Finally got around to your game! and OMG the rainbow vomit had me rolling on the floor xD and those flying heads are bastards! Love all the attention to detail like the stomach growing. My fave Pico game of the jam!

Gacha Fever by Falestress 2023-10-19T16:48:27Z

Super, SUPER cute art style. I especially loved all the drawings of the items, with the little clips for weapons. The charms all had cute ideas behind them too. Overall, the vibes were immaculate.

Compared with vampire survivors, I never felt that I was strategizing my picks towards an OP build, or really even know what I would be aiming for in that regard. Most weapons felt pretty similar in powerlevel and play style, and I found I could from the very beginning, just sit in one spot and let my attacks go off, without being overly strategic in my build aside from picking +lifesteal and +magic power items.

Also, I didn't feel that "limited space" was very well represented here. Yes, the arena was small, but I never felt limited by that, as I barely had to move in general.

Overall, I think this is a promising direction for a vampire survivors game, and you have the looks, sounds, game feel, and vibe DOWN. It just needs some more strategic diversity and balancing. I think this could be quite successful!

Burned Out, Shut In by cawfee_art 2023-10-16T20:10:10Z

A very cozy game. I love the art! Depression trapping you in your apartment is definitely a unique twist on the limited space concept.

I felt that simply clicking on dishes and clothes to clean them up felt too simple. I would have liked to have to drag clothes to a bin, scrub food off of plates, or otherwise do a process that felt more mechanical or involved. To mimic the monotonous work that makes doing those tasks hard, but also to represent the therapeutic nature of slowly putting things in their proper place.

The game is simple, but very effective in conveying its themes. And like I said, the art is lovely. A great solo project for someone new to coding, you should be proud :)

Moon Settlers by Alex Duh 2023-10-20T06:00:55Z

Screen Shot 2023-10-19 at 10.52.40 PM.png This one felt a bit frustrating to me. It didn't seem there was much incentive to build anything other than greenhouses and synthesis reactors. Sometimes the greenhouses stopped producing food, and I wasn't sure why. The headquarters seemed too large to ever fit with the other buildilngs I needed.

And as addressed in other comments, fitting building in felt more like cheesing the game's hitboxes rather than satisfying tetrising things together. I never felt like I was making empowered decisions, just sort of hoping that I had left enough space to fit other buildings.

It looks like I can rotate buildings? One of the comments mentions it, and it appears so in the screenshot, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. Lastly, I think I hit a bug where the messages scrolled way too slowly, and clogged up my screen.

This is a game with potential and a fun core loop of trying to manage your base and resources. With a little more balance, and some more polish, it could really shine.

Up To The Top by slumbgod 2023-10-17T00:51:25Z

A nice, chill game, with a pleasant color palette and just overall good vibes. I did find it easy to the point that it was almost impossible to lose. It might have been nice if running into a tree killed you, to add some level of difficulty.

I didn't feel that "limited space" was really all that relevant in this entry. I wonder if you designed this based on the 'overgrown' theme that was one of the potential last round picks ;p

Overall, despite some issues, it's a fun and relaxing game, I had a really nice time with it and played through a few times to see the alternate paths I could take. Going for the sides did add some difficulty. Nice job!

2 Dudes against the Liquidator by Kitira 2023-10-10T02:13:05Z

Well I'll be damned! What a brilliant mechanic and application of the theme! Truly top tier! I unfortunately had a bug on level 3/4 where a door would no longer open after it crushed an item. I also picked up the controls unnaturally fast. I can't imagine why! Great game guys!

FLAPPO! by Esther128 2023-10-10T02:48:12Z

Cool game! It's awesome that you managed to include an intro cut-scene and a clear tutorial in 3 days! I did have a bug that frequently broke my ability to jump unless I reset. Bugs are inevitable though, especially for jams. At least I could reset to keep going! :D Good job!

Yuri Quest by ArtOfMacks 2023-10-10T02:59:42Z

Sadly I crashed pretty far in (or so I think). Love that you managed to make so many different enemies! I think some easy tweaks that may help with balancing is making it so you cant shoot the enemy bullets and also having the rocks block your bullets. It would promote more moving and dodging vs standing still and just spamming down the enemies across the map. Otherwise great stuff!

Crime Critters (Rob the British Museum) by Pen Island Games 2023-10-09T20:05:05Z

@le-don Thanks! Yah we had 0 time for balancing and play-testing haha. Check out the post-jam version for a muuuuuuch more balanced and fun game!

Crime Critters (Rob the British Museum) by Pen Island Games 2023-10-10T05:46:57Z

@ategon Absolutely! I'm not familiar with the Ludum Dare score chasers tournament. Can I get some links when you have a chance?

Crime Critters (Rob the British Museum) by Pen Island Games 2023-10-10T05:55:53Z

@pious Thanks for the kind words! As for the viewport, yah I should probably make that adjustment so the game is more accessible. You can technically scroll to the bottom right and click the fullscreen button, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people don't notice or bother looking. Regardless, definitely play the post-jam version with your fiancee!

Crime Critters (Rob the British Museum) by Pen Island Games 2023-10-17T21:37:05Z

@kanity Thanks so much for playing! You're definitely right that I slightly tweaked the movement (speed and player weight) a bit. Glad to hear that you felt it was for the better as well haha.

Not sure what could have happened with the exit condition. It should automatically conclude the run when both players return back to the driver and passenger seats of the truck. Sorry it didn't work and you couldn't post to the leader board!

Crime Critters (Rob the British Museum) by Pen Island Games 2023-10-17T21:40:28Z

@empyreans Thanks so much for the kind words! With all this amazing reception we definitely plan to continue development. Stay tuned for a steam page in the next coming days :eyes:!

@jerem-watts I seriously can't put into words how meaningful and impactful your words and advice were to us. You're a legend for doing what you do and providing so much feedback and wisdom to the indie game community and you played a massive role in kicking us into overdrive to take this game to the next level. (as of now we intend to follow your minimally viable release -> sequel suggestion)

You also have a knack for voice acting and when the time comes (and if you're interested of course) we'd love to bring you on for some voice roles in the future!

Seriously thanks so much!

@adamcyounis Hey, I'm the artist on this one. I love your pixel art videos! You've been a big source of inspiration/info on my game dev journey, so it's exciting to see you liked the game, and the art :)

My partner and I each got carried away polishing the stuff that's most fun for us, and didn't get around to sound. Definitely something we'll remember for next time.

That was so much fun to play! I actually love how floaty the jump is cause it lets you laaaaunch yourself over big gaps with enough momentum. Super fun!

These graphics are stunning! I wish I could have gotten the game to launch to my main window and not my vertical monitor D: It was just playable enough so at least I could enjoy the game! Really good job overall!
