You guys are finishing up too? :) I no longer feel quite as bad.
I have all the game architecture working, but I'm still filling my levels. Had a -hell- of a bad day today, constant pain.

That was super creepy, but also very cute. I love how this usually goes for the more unsettling type of horror and doesn't rely too much on creepy imagery but rather distortion of the images. The sounds were a bit frightening; I was always on the edge of my seat when going out of the room. Movement is a little on the sluggish side, but it does help to set the pace. I was real worried about the backtracking because of how slow the movement was.
Those footprints, though. eeeugh. And the sound design work is on point. :ok_hand: Great adorable "night" music and scary ambiance outside the room. I didn't quite understand the story behind the game. From the get-go, one can already tell that the setting is kind of "off", but I didn't really see the payoff to why this character was in this place with this cat. Perhaps there's deeper meaning in the ending, I don't know.
Yeah, it was a nice blend of the two genres, good balancing the caring for your pet with the fetch quest aspects of the outside. Great experience overall.
Wow, that was an experience. Really nice game, but also very creepy.
While playing I mostly just thought wtf was going on, but the ending was very nice and the whole game made much more sense.
As always, arts and music are very good, as always, I discovered a poetic mood, and as often, there is a strong story in your game. But for the first time, I was truly frightened while playing, and for the first time, I almost cried at the end - you took me by surprise with a so sad twist! So, as always : thank you for the game, good job, and well done!
Whoa, I didn't expect your entry to be a horror game! My hair was on end during all the exploring parts, the ambiance definitely fit well. I liked that the first room locked the door and forced you to backtrack for a key, and then the footsteps! Also, that first eye monster + its loud sound got me good. I can't say that I liked the unsettling music outside of the room, but it was really well done.
I guess in terms of stuff I encountered in my playthrough - it took me a while to realize at the very beginning that you were supposed to sleep in the bed to progress the night, and I also couldn't immediately see that there was space to walk around the first eye monster.
Overall, good job.
Very cute, and very spooky! The horror sections reminded me a lot of Lone Survivor, which should have probably clued me into how things were going to go, but instead made me presume things were a lot more literal than they ended up being. I don't really have any recommendations to give, honestly, this game was pretty excellent all round!
Wow. I really enjoyed playing the game.
It took me a while before I found out what to do in the room when being followed. Maybe a little hint (a light ray coming from the window) might help.
The music is awesome (as always ) and fitting to the mood of the game. The contrast of the calm melody in the bedroom with the "scary" ambient sound and sound effects when a monster is nearby with the cute and scary graphics create an atmosphere full of tension.
P.S. There are some lighting artefacts ("full-light box" around the character and light discontinuities especially visible in the room with red light, in v1.02, WebGL) in Safari. (Does this happen in other web browsers? Would increasing pixel light count solve it?)
@M-1: Hey there, thanks for the feedback! Regarding the room chase sequence, there's actually a pulsing light coming from the window that only appears in that specific scene -- maybe it needed to be a little more heavy-handed.
For the lighting artifacts, I'm aware that the lighting on the WebGL build is not quite appearing as it ought to, but I'm not sure exactly which issue you're seeing with the "full light box". I've increased the pixel light count to 20 which is quite more than enough, but I know there may be other issues running amok. I'll try it on my OSX machine if I have a chance...a screenshot might help too!
@M-1: I just realized that Safari by default uses the WebGL 1.0 API and not WebGL 2.0 (see https://caniuse.com/#feat=webgl2), so that's probably it. I'll see if I can put in some fallbacks in the future, but in the meantime I'd recommend using Chrome or Firefox for best experience.
Absolutely sensational game. Doesn't need any "but it's just a jam game" qualifiers or anything. The art style is amazing and unique and contrasts really well with the horror aesthetic and the shaders. That distortion when the monster sneaks up on you is especially awesome since it emphasizes the outlines. Story is perfect and very effective. I figured it was some sort of metaphor at first, but the reveal was still great and left a lot to think about. The music was nice but strangely it was the least interesting part of the game I think. It felt pretty typical so it didn't stand up to the unique and powerful visuals and story. Sound effects were great though.
When I saw red footsteps following me I felt tense! When I satisfied Meowmie I felt endeared. If you continue to develop this game, when I went up to open a door and pressed up, I accidentally went back through the door I'd just come out of.
@Ethan Kennerly Should be fixed in the post-jam version! Thanks for playing our game :)
What craft! Your skill and careful polish achieves a potent feel for both the light and dark. I was softened by doing chores, getting to know and like my cat. Then you artfully took advantage, and left me alone in the dark, and I began to feel tense.
Lots of small good choices: avoiding a tutorial, how far back "death" sent me, the sweep of the light, the gentle highlight of an item I could interact with.
But most of all it never felt gamey, meaning you successfully pulled me out of my normal mode and into yours. Well done.
Nice game and nice switching between the moods! The ending almost make me cry.
You've absolutely nailed the player conveyance for this. I don't think I've ever played a jam entry in any Ludum Dare with as much mood and ambience as this one. Extremely well done!!
Great game, i gotta say i normally don't play scary games but this one was great. A little slow for my taste but definitely well done. I especially liked the music how it matches the tone perfectly.
Not sure what's wrong. I don't hear any sound at all with any of the three links (Chrome, other Unity games are working), still, the mood and play is pretty darn good, so I'll come back again later.
Edit: Seems like it's a Chrome problem. Some other games aren't working as well now, but they work in Edge. Unfortunately Edge doesn't support WebGL2, so I might just have to sit this one out.
@Forest: Ouch, sorry to hear that! =( I'm not able to reproduce that issue on my end using Chrome; maybe some more info about your browser version and/or system would help me track it down?
This is very atmospheric game! Sound is awesome. I really enjoyed playing it, thanks a lot! The only thing is the beginning, before the first night, feels like loose by tension.
And that shift between safety room and terrifying corridors - awesome. Well done!
Very nice game! One moment you're playing with your cat and petting it but then you have to go outside into *that* to find food. Good job!
This is an amazing game! 5/5 mood! Audio and visuals are stunning. Genres look incompatible but you combined them so naturally... this is definitely one of my favourite games in this LD.
I'm really impressed! I normally don't play horror games... but the pet sim aspect kept me hooked. Ended up very invested in this, and definitely got some feels at the end. I can't think of much to critique game wise as everything was a smooth experience that propelled the story forward. Well done!
Oh man, the ending almost made me cry.
Really cool game. Top atmosphere and great use of the theme, folks. Well done!
Also, plus points for cute cat š
Definitely something beautiful. Even if it was intense .... Good job.
I really liked the graphics here. Meowmie is so cute :) And the smooth movement of the light was really awesome looking. I was able to find 2 fish, but then I got stuck with progress. I suppose I'm not that great with horror games :D What I sort of missed was an option to maybe sprint a little. Or having to sprint while being chased, perhaps it'd make things even more intense.
@DDRKirbyISQ I figured it out! I popped into the console and noticed this warning:
> The AudioContext was not allowed to start. It must be resume (or created) after a user gesture on the page. https://goo.gl/7K7WLu
So I refreshed and clicked the game a few times while it was loading (because I was waiting for the start screen to click before), and it worked! Might have something to do with how you're hosting it on your website? Might also be worth reporting to Unity.
Oh, and for the record: Chrome v66.0.3359.139, Win 10 x64.
@Forest Ugh! Thanks for the report -- this is a breaking change in Chrome 66 that apparently is causing a huge headache for everybody. Unity is compiling some relevant fixes but I'll probably have to throw up some sort of preloader in the meantime.
@Forest I've updated all of my WebGL game pages with a thumbnail and "Click to Run" so it won't attempt to load the WebGL content until you click on the page, which should fix that issue (and be nicer in general!).
Great job, this reminds me why I got into game development. <3
Iām not sure if you were able to see it, but I played your game on my stream at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames tonight.
I was excited to play the game from the previews I saw on twitter for the art. I'm not a fan of horror so I couldn't play very long, but I liked the idea of adventuring out to get the survival items for my beloved pet.
The only confusing part was when I went to play with the cat and instead carried it around dancing with it as it rested on my shoulder. I"m not sure holding is the same as playing.
I am curious what made the kitty sick, but I didn't have the ability to complete the creepy horror parts of the game to find out. I"m not someone who enjoys being scared.
Good Game. Thank you for sharing.
MAN that is tense! I love Meowmie so much though! Really, this is so well done. The atmosphere and aesthetics are top notch, and everything outside of the warm and happy area drives my heart rate through the roof - in a good way!
I hate horror games. I don't even know, why I clicked on this. Well, no, I totally know why I did it. Because of the super sweet first GIF. And here lies the magic in your game. You managed to make me really bond with Meowmie! I was the little girl and I just loved my Meowmie from the first second. I really felt it. Which is an insane feat. That love for Meowmie made me, as a player, venture forth, even though I hated it. Waaaay to scary for me. The atmosphere was so tense, that I thought about quitting a few times. But my hungry and sick kitty demanded me to go on. So I did. I just had to.
I made a video about your game. And my friend telling me that he had a dream after watching a video. In that dream, my friend was wandering through dark corridors and finding a medicine for his own cat. I think it's great for you to know that your game can inspire someone like this. šš½
I've finally given in to pushing post jam attempts of my work... so now I had a chance to try this! I love how creepy it is... and the "eye" things really give a clue as to how to get by them.
I might give up on JavaScript and make myself try Unity soon.
This game is great, I really love the cat because I'm also raising a cat, putting a cat into a horror game is a good idea! Don't forget to try my game(RTS+FPS): https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/rts-shooting
I don't know how you did it, but the mood of the game was tremendous. So cute, yet so scary. Passing by those eyes was so horrifying, when I couldn't see them. Well done. This is one of the best games I've played this LD.
This is really great! The tonal change between being inside with the cat and having to find supplies outside works really well. Love the art style and the audio is really good too.
Loved your game, it touched me deep.
I liked specially the mood you get with the gameplay, how the safety and warmth of home and your cat hit's you when you come back to your room.
Also i'm gratefull for not including any Jump-Scare! You got me scared almost all the time i was out, searching for the suplys.
If i had to remark any "bad" thing, i was having a bit of an issue when trying to pass the room in order to get the healing plant: I just felt off why the eye-thingys bumped onto me since i didnt have enough "warning" of their proximity, or any clear patterns that i could learn (being that most of the time i wasnt able to see them if i tryed to stay far away from them)
But that was just a tiny and personal issue, as i said before, loved your work, pretty impresive!
I'll follow you to see more of you in the future!
Wow! There is an authentic emotional rollercoaster in this game. The atmosphere (art, music, Meownie miaowing) is so gorgeous and I love the post effect when meeting creepy creatures.
You gave a scary, cute and sad (in the end) ambiance at the same time and with only 72h? Really impressive.
Super great job! :D
This game is the reason I'm never getting a cat.
Great visuals, great music, great gameplay. If you forced me to find something wrong, it would probably be that the virtual pet aspect of the game feels more like an optional extra. The horror part more than makes up for it, though. The atmosphere is great, the 'things' out there are creepy and the game feels scary without overuse of jumpscares, sounds, and other horror game cliches. I really liked the clever placement (or non-placement) of enemies. Overall felt like a complete game, an impressive feat for 72 hours.
Nice, and heartfelt.
I couldn't play much, I freak out so easily with horror games xD
But I liked it! The atmosphere is perfect, the compo version feels pretty polished and solid, the music and SFX are beautiful and scary at the same time...
I felt lost, since the level in the compo version feels a bit empty and repetitive. But despite that this is one of my fav entries! Congrats!
Really a beautiful game... *brrrmmeow* and scary *hisssss* I'm still playing it but already love it!
Okay I just reached the end.

When I finished the game it had me sitting in puddles of tears. This really touched my heart, the music was great. Wonderful game but very sad ending. Can't stop hugging my cat now.
