Love the art. If you tightened the movement a little bit this could easily turn into something larger, good work

yorsh 2023-05-01 15:31

@rustywolf Yeah, I really should have taken the time needed to add input buffering for the skills. I wasted a bit of time in the second day that could have been used for this instead sadly. Thanks for playing !

jclardy 2023-05-01 19:07

Great graphics and animations. Tutorial introduction to new skills is also very well done.

silkworm-sweatshop 2023-05-01 20:18

That's some juicy pigeon combat! Graphics and sound are on point! Felt pretty satisfying smacking things around although maybe a bit unruly given how over the top the moves are. That's not necessarily a bad thing but it can get a bit button mashy. It was actually pretty interesting when the powers where taken away and I couldn't button mash slaughter through the enemies (even though that's fun too). I guess it's about finding that balance between satisfying smackdown and more thoughtful, controlled movement.

yorsh 2023-05-01 21:43

@jclardy I'm glad you liked it, thx for playing!

@silkworm-sweatshop Yup that's actually something I struggled to balance on this game. Even more so that I couldn't decide what I wanted this game to be about. At some point I only wanted the game to feel great to play with no real challenge. Then I added a score system for no good reasons really, so from there I had to balance the difficulty a bit more...Should have sit down and think about it before doing things. Thanks for the feedback!

silkworm-sweatshop 2023-05-01 21:58

@yorsh I think it's fine. For jams, you don't really have time to think everything through or get everything perfect. There is plenty of time afterwords to expand or take something useful from it and there really is some impressive stuff here.

matthewdrake 2023-05-01 23:12

Really great work on this one, feels really polished for a jam entry. Loved the audio and graphics, and the gameplay felt satisfying when you took down enemies or performed the dive bomb attack. A really fantastic game overall. ^^

candlesan 2023-05-02 00:43

This was great!!! * Love the art and animations, really nicely done. Character animations, environment art, the tree parallax art in the background, pixel art attacks and fx, all of it was great * Good stylistic font and presentation choices, very well polished * Loved having controller support * Music was surprisingly good for a 3 second loop. I turned it off eventually but I kept it on longer than I thought because as far as 3 second loops go, it held it's own surprisingly well.

d3kryption 2023-05-02 06:37

This so absolutely fantastic! I loved the KO sound :D and the attacking sounds. They were fantastic. Maybe a little too loud but that's all. The animations and partials were great.

The entire concept is just brilliant. Nice job!:)

yorsh 2023-05-02 15:57

@matthewdrake @d3kryption I'm glad you liked it, thanks for playing!

@candlesan Well by playing the music without the melody for a bit, then only the drum, then everything at once I think it gets to maybe 10sec or so, that helps. Tho it's still a miracle that it's good enough cause that was some very last minute work ahah. Thanks for the feedback!

corporation 2023-05-02 17:37

Beautiful and incredibly polished game! Controls are smooth and the slide/shoot/kick mechanic is very satisfying. Also pixel art is gorgeous, especially the background. I guess the only problem with this game I had is having cats as the enemies :c

ljg 2023-05-02 19:04

I really liked this one! It was fun and funny, but I wished that when you went back through a level after dying you didn't have to read the letter again.

anguium 2023-05-02 20:47

Controlling the Ultimate Elite Pigeon was a blast, never felt more cool delivering mail. Movement was fun and combat felt tight, sound design choices were also great! Nice job wrapping it all up in time!

pdotjpg 2023-05-02 21:03

Wow, impressive how polished this is. Beautiful animation, really responsive controls. Routing the levels and going for speed is super fun. Has that Super Meat Boy, Pizza Tower feel. And I like how the game didn't outstay its welcome. Solid little chunk of content.

The tutorial messages are a bit of a momentum killer upon restart and the theme seems like a bit of an afterthought. Other than that, no notes. Extremely solid compo entry.

deadlycupcake 2023-05-02 21:14

Pixel art was very good. I wish the popups only came up once. I beat the whole thing lots of fun

yorsh 2023-05-02 21:50

@corporation I had no choice, all pigeons I asked told me that they are the number one enemy.

@ljg @pdotjpg @deadlycupcake Yeah I knew while doing them that I should make sure to only show them once, but figured I would do it at the end when the game is all nice and playable. As if that moment ever happens during a game jam ahah. Should have done it right away it would have taken like a minute to do. Thanks for the feedback!

@anguium Thanks for playing! That was my goal so I'm glad it worked out in the end.

rngames 2023-05-03 01:51

✔️ I liked the scoring system at the end - adds more depth. Overall nice UI work.

✔️ Explosions.

✔️ Nice pixel art.

✔️ Good variety of moves: lots of fun ripping through enemies!

➖ Sometimes the enemy projectiles are a bit hard to see. Maybe adding an outline could help?

Overall: Great job!

callbackthefunction 2023-05-03 03:38

The playthrough tutorials in the early levels are such a smart design, nice work!

aune 2023-05-03 05:55

I'm always impressed by the quality of a compo. Very good idea to remove the power one level and then put it back in to appreciate its contribution in terms of feel. :green_heart:

Thanks for the coyote time and the input buffer

The game is great, the two only things I would add are: *screen shake* and, because enemy are placed to help the jump (good level design by the way), I would teleport the character to the destroyed position in order be at the *correct position* for using the bonus jump.

But, that's compo it already well well done

coderaurus 2023-05-03 17:10

Nice, complete game. Graphicly pleasing to watch and you got good sound effects to fit the game (I like the KO announcer). For me the control scheme felt odd but I got used to it. I suppose I would use space for jumping but then again the slide is pretty crucial mechanic. It was also little hard to read the result texts, either outline or some sort of background could help with that.

Edit: It was slightly annoying to have to click the intro text away each restart.

Good work!

yorsh 2023-05-03 23:21

@rngames I quickly made the projectile using the fire explosion particles (or the smoke, can't remember exatly) so I had something to work with...then never came back to work on them again. I should have totally spent a little more time on them. Thanks for playing!

@callbackthefunction I'm glad you liked it, thanks for the feedback!

@aune Ah screenshake was something I had planned as "very important", but still had to left behind because I struggled for a bit with my level building workflow. I also had some sort of *Ori and the blind forest* dash move planned that would have worked a bit like your idea, but that was way way too ambitious given the time I spent animating stuff. Thanks for the feedback!

@coderaurus I struggled to find the best control scheme so much, I changed it back and forth at least 3 times. There was probably something better but at some point I just decided to stick with one cause it was driving me crazy.

Ahah yeah announcer ended up much better than expected, given that it takes like 30 sec to make I should have made a bunch more.

Actually you can press space to click the button, but it's really not obvious. Thanks for playing!

belle 2023-05-04 19:35

This was fantastic! Incredibly impressive compo entry. That you managed this alone, in such a restricted time is a fabulous feat. The gameplay was quick, responsive and just plain fun. I feel bad for the cats, but I like how the gameplay mechanics were introduced and I loved the detail of adding a post particle effect on the pigeon. Applause!

conduit 2023-05-05 01:09

Very interesting mechanics, please please please run with this idea! Aesthetic was great and character design was also top notch. Great job!

luumi 2023-05-05 02:08

Using the attacks made me laugh every time. Something about the juxtaposition between the bird-delivering-mail setting and the absolute destruction. Really impressive and fun! I would also agree with others that the controls were a tiny bit confusing, but I got used to them quickly, and the tutorial progression was really helpful! Personally I didn't mind that the letters showed up each time, since at least a couple times I accidentally clicked away before I could read them and/or forgot what they said...

purpledartfrog 2023-05-05 18:53

Holy h**l ... this seemed so well put together and the controls had such a nice feeling to them. Very good job ... one thing .. at least to me. The cats blended a little too much in to the background. Might be a design decision... but first death often involved not actually seeing the damn thing  Aside from that - very good job

yorsh 2023-05-05 19:31

@belle @luumi I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for playing!

@conduit Thanks for the playthrough, it was fun!

@purpledartfrog I considered changing their palette at the end, but I was running out of time, liked how they looked and figured it kind of make sense for cat to be sneaky anyway. So I didn't bother, but I would have done something about them with more time for sure. Thanks for the feedback!

purpledartfrog 2023-05-05 19:34

@yorsh You absolutely welcome ... and it just says something about the state of the game. It was really my only "critique".. again very nice job

toc 2023-05-05 19:53

Solid speedrunning game! Not really my jam, as I couldnt really get the hang of it, but thats on me. I really loved the art for the enemies

f1krazy 2023-05-06 12:31

This is super fun! The graphics, sound, and gameplay are all superbly-executed, especially for a Compo game. The scoring system makes me long for some kind of chart of my best times and scores for each level, so I can try and beat them, but I can understand perfectly why one wasn't included (it's not exactly a priority). I expect to see this high up the rankings come the end of the jam!

olddog 2023-05-06 13:56

love this game, I like platform games so much, and this game is a great platform game,,jump feelings are nice ,shooting and slide design so well, level disigns are great, nice work!while sir jump some times makes me confused,

yorsh 2023-05-06 15:03

@toc To be honest that's not my prefered kind of game either ahah, I'm pretty bad at them. Thanks for playing!

@f1krazy Yup I got kind of confused when doing the scoring system, cause the game didn't really needed one actually. For some reasons I did one anyway. So it exists but it's not really doing anything...I couldn't have made it more complete as you guessed, so I think I should have saved time by scrapping it and improving other things instead. Thanks for the feedback!

@olddog Yeah I agree, it's missing visual cues when air jump is available. I think I could have made one in under 5 minutes but I had my mind stuck on other things at the end. I'm glad you like it, thanks for playing!

local-minimum 2023-05-07 09:30

Really great entry. I think I got to level 7 before giving up, or was it 6? The one after abilities had been taken away. I must say I enjoyed the slide jump kill jump kill things but I didn't figure out I should do a slam after that or such which meant there were quite a few leaps of faith with just luck the times I didn't land on enemies. But on at least on level I managed to stay airborne from the start to the goal more or less. Controls were nice and well polished game overall.

bluedandelion 2023-05-07 12:36

This is probably be the best game on Ludum Dare that I have played so far! The fact that it was a compo makes it all the more impressive

yorsh 2023-05-07 15:08

@local-minimum That would be the last level actually, so you've seen everything. Thanks for playing!

@bluedandelion Oh thanks! I'm glad you liked it, thanks for playing

jimmymcginger 2023-05-07 21:06

Such an impressive compo entry! Graphics and SFX instantly grabbed me, music suited the game. Enjoyed the mechanics a lot! Good job!

ismael-rodriguez 2023-05-08 04:03

Fun game. I like the animations on the main character. Particle effects were nice, and just moving around felt good. Not crazy about the slide jump mechanic. I also muted the music. The sounds fit well. Still fun to play, Great job!

resacagames 2023-05-10 23:39

Amazing entry!!! Super polished, compo is crazy. Sound and graphics were very good, full with action, lot's of movement, nice combos. I actually played it for a while. Loved it, great work!!!!!!!!! 👏👏

jimbly 2023-05-12 00:05

Wow, really great game! Amazing graphics and audio too! Really cute cat, I'm glad that most of the levels were completable with minimal feline fatalities, although I had a bit of difficulty on a couple there =^.^=.

jonathan-lorenz 2023-05-12 14:53

Nice beat em up plateformer! I've never played as a fighting pigeon before :) Great graphics and good entry overall. Well done!

weirdbitgames 2023-05-14 13:40

This game is AMAZING! Such high production value and polish! I found the controls a little difficult on keyboard but this is really, really good! I can see this game winning or at least ranking really high! The music was good, the animations (especially the letter appearing) was well done and I liked the Street Fighter-style K.O sound too!

dishwand 2023-05-17 03:54

love the presentation! the parallaxing and spritework are really lovely. i think the movement & camera smoothing were a bit too slidey for my liking, so i couldn't get past level 7. but fun little experience!

xk-the-name 2023-05-18 07:55

Well done! Nice graphics, smooth controls and sound effects. I especially liked the side kick - jump combo and the way things explode. The only thing for me is that the cat enemies are not clearly visible on the background. photo_2023-05-17_11-51-08.jpg. Anyways, great job! :)
