LD44 — Your life is currency

Spent by AkirAssasin 2019-04-30T04:45:55Z

I like this take on the theme a lot, the way the life of a common soldier is just commodity to the state, the way nothing you do make any difference. The graphics are barebones but very nice looking.

For a text-only game though, it's surprisingly silent! I think some ambience and gunshots can do a lot to improve the (already pretty good) mood and overall presentation.

Legend Of the Red Demon by Jimbly 2019-05-19T05:23:24Z

I enjoyed the old terminal aesthetic! The gameplay does feel a bit linear and I got through by mostly pressing space, but considering this is done in half a day I can't really complain. Hope you'll have better luck with your schedules next time!

Doki Doki Boom Chaotic by fullmontis 2019-04-29T15:45:07Z

Cute art style, and the music is great, too! I like the bazooka movement a lot. The fact that you can't hit the enemies while standing on the ground adds a lot of challenge, but it's quite rewarding when you finally grasp the controls. I find the enemies' sound effects a bit loud compared to the music, but otherwise a pretty enjoyable experience.

The Price Is Life by sreal 2019-04-29T03:55:27Z

I would like the stats (money and friends) to be available at all times: I only have a very vague idea of what the icons do. Buying life doesn't seem to be very useful, because usually you end up with less than 10 turns and the stats does not seem to stack.

SimuCorp by Nick Rafalski 2019-04-30T06:16:36Z

A pretty nice and funny game! I would like it to keep running when it loses focus. For me it pauses itself when I move my mouse out of the window.

Might of the Druids by candlesan 2019-05-03T10:11:04Z

Pretty nice and fun game, though it could use some music for sure. I feel that the post-compo version is more balanced and had more cards than the compo version, and is consequently more fun to play, but I understand it's a very ambitious undertaking to create a card game in 48 hours, so congrats on finishing that! The leaderboard is a nice touch. A nice game overall.

Depths by potatolain 2019-04-30T07:11:52Z

I find it insanely cool that you made an NES game for LD! The audio and graphics are good for the platform restriction. This interpretation of the theme is unexpected, unique and emotionally intense. The intro text was a bit of a spoiler for me, but I acknowledge its necessity.

All in all, a very nice experience personally. Thank you for making this.

Blast Run by kamikaziuk 2019-04-29T13:09:07Z

I'm having problems starting this game. I can select items in the main menu using the left stick, but none of the buttons are doing anything.

Does Money Grow on Trees by Antti Haavikko 2019-04-29T16:37:24Z

The animations are really juiced up! Reading through the emails and messages was pretty fun, too. Great work.

Kill'em by Aycan 2019-05-01T13:50:47Z

Pretty fun and fits the theme well! I can easily see myself enjoying a version of this with more content and depth, like more card effects and different actions during a turn that facilitate strategy... But that probably won't be poker anymore  Nice concept!

LIFEBLASTER by gwinnell 2019-05-01T14:28:41Z

That's a very catchy soundtrack! I enjoy the visuals, too. Pretty solid entry overall. Well done!

Also, your own engine? That's cool.

Anthill by mikelovesrobots 2019-05-03T05:57:30Z

Short game but pretty enjoyable to figure out. The visuals are simple but nice-looking. I guess the respawn sequence could have been faster (which says a lot about how bad I am at this...), but I didn't have problems with the gameplay. Nicely done! Only thing I'm not sure about is how this is connected to the theme, as many have already expressed.

Ollo's Life by Memel06 2019-05-01T04:38:49Z

I always find games developed for actual retro platforms cool. The intro could have introduced Ollo's human friend a bit better so we could know why Ollo cares about saving them :)

Vital Investments by dalton5000 2019-04-30T03:30:51Z

The music is nice, and the graphics too! I'm not sure what the exact goal is, though. I got all the buildings (I guess that is what "build up the town" meant) and full cash but I don't see anything special happening. Also I find references to a lot of buildings that I never saw in the hints. Am I missing anything?

Lifarm by Naruvan 2019-04-30T13:44:37Z

It's pretty difficult! I would wish for the difference between enemies and projectiles to be a bit larger. Spent my first run shooting at bullets in vain, before I found out those were not enemies and I should aim at somewhere else, then it became fun!

The greedy ATM by island-jam-2-group-3 2019-05-19T05:45:34Z

The idea seems fun, but I can't seem to find a strategy. I think it would help if there're ways to tell which customers are more suspectable to theft. Congrats on finishing the game!

Blood Cards by wrimo 2019-04-29T17:19:35Z

I guess the balance does need more work. The defend cards, for example, are pretty useless because they get you 1 shield for 1 life, unless you have Divine Blessing which is a very expensive card itself. The UI colors also aren't very good I'm afraid.

Doc. BLOODAWAY by randdir 2019-04-29T14:23:34Z

I like the art style a lot! That's being said, I don't think this belongs in Compo. In Credits it says:

> Music by Alex MuCulloch - opengameart.org

I believe you're supposed to make your own music in 48h for Compo. You can't use someone else's work.

Clock of Your Life by JestemStefan 2019-04-30T04:07:53Z

Managed to survive for 79 hours. The always flashing hunger warning really makes the mood because it strikes too true.

Happiness Life by ManTou 2019-04-29T14:06:46Z

Nice graphics and seemingly promising gameplay. Unfortunately I'm encountering a bug where all my stats and money are reset when I go home after work, as if in a groundhog day loop. I find it amusing but it does mean that I don't get to see most of the game.

Bloodletter by shp 2019-04-29T13:40:58Z

I'm not a Quake player so please bear with me a bit if this was actually very obvious, but I can't start the game. All it gives me upon launch is a black screen with "32" on it. I can hover the "32" but not click it. Right-click brings up a "presets" menu, which takes me to a "main menu" after I choose a graphical preset. Nothing there leads me to the game either. Could you please add some instructions for those of us who weren't very genre savvy here? :D

Bloodletter by shp 2019-04-29T13:53:52Z

@shp I did unzip everything properly. I'm currently on Windows (because a lot of games are Windows only). Will try the Linux build a bit later!

DISREGARD LIFE, ACQUIRE CURRENCY by notb 2019-04-29T04:21:51Z

The waves look really great! The map is really clever, too. Great work!

As much as I like following the stars, though, I feel that the locations are a bit too far from each other. I end up spending a lot of time holding buttons, missing the sailors due to inertia, and then spending more time tracking them down. I don't really know if that's good for the mood or not.

A Heart of Gold by Fat cat 2019-04-30T04:25:11Z

Nice pixel art! I find the balance a bit lacking, because all the other skills pale in comparison with the dash, which is an AoE and evasion all in itself. It's especially hard to land a hit with the normal attack. Dashing alone is very fun however, so I'll take that! It would also be great if this game had some audio in it.

Two Minutes of Fame by ZanyG 2019-04-29T05:25:25Z

Fun and funny at the same time! I like the humorous take on social media, which also fits the theme pretty well. The game isn't working well on Firefox though: the wolves weren't moving and I was unable to pick up items. Had to use Chromium for the whole experience.

Rent is Due by JakobTheQuizGuy 2019-05-03T06:23:50Z

Nice juicy visuals! I feel like the shooting part is a bit simple, and I think I saw another game this Compo with vertical "lanes" of movement just like this one, but this has its uniqueness in its shopping phase. I find it a bit hard to accumulate hearts in the game, and wasn't able to keep up with the sturdier enemies introduced each turn. Funny premise though!

Martian Scrapper by Aileron 2019-05-03T05:45:52Z

Fun game but a little short in terms of content. I wish there was an option to resize the window. It's pretty small on my monitor!

Maintenance Costs by Rolly 2019-04-30T14:05:58Z

I love games where you program things, and this game's depth is very impressive for 48 hours! However, I think some room for experimentation is essential for games like this to be fun. I like the idea of this, a lot, but I find it a bit too punishing, making it pointless to continue playing if you miss even a single step.

I have given up trying to clear it in one go without cheating and looking at the walkthrough, but I still want to say this is some great work!

UFO Fishing by pvp 2019-04-29T16:54:38Z

I want to eat SUSHI! On the day the world ends. I want to eat SUSHI! As the last dinner.

The graphics look nice, but like many others here, I find the difficulty a bit steep, and sadly it prevents me from having much fun from playing this. I also find myself wishing for more connections with the theme :D

Force of Nature by Griddolini 2019-04-30T02:54:21Z

Nice looking and a great fit for the theme! Gets a bit hard after the first few waves, but pretty enjoyable still.

Mana Drunk by JustusPan 2019-04-30T14:50:50Z

Simple but fairly enjoyable! The animations are juicy and the sounds fit together, if a bit loud when it stacks. I find beating the game a bit tricky because the mob enemies don't train you for the boss. It was a bit surprising when the boss came and your attacks suddenly do nothing.

Cowry - A game about change by johanhelsing 2019-05-01T14:10:21Z

This is a pretty unusual game, trying to convey a message in a jam where most games just try to produce fun gameplay. While I find the audio nice and atmospheric, I think this need to be longer for the message to be fully explored and presented to the player.

Also, I thought "change in at least 4 different ways" in the description meant there were 4 different endings, but I only managed to find one. Was that the only?

The Poor Rebellion by Adam Clayden 2019-05-01T07:15:12Z

That's some 5/5 programmer art and voice acting right there. Sadly you didn't enable rating on Graphics and Audio...

Life Path by kristinnes 2019-04-29T04:51:26Z

The writing is funny and the art is good! Great job on the humor side. I'm particularly amused by how you can start working right from your birth. That's how a real workaholic lives.

The Oarsman by SefrZ 2019-05-01T06:38:02Z

The pixel art and the music are both very nice! Had lots of fun playing it. I find the dash a bit hard to control because it's so powerful. I even have the feel (which may or may not be correct) that upward dashing gives more height than jumping. I'd prefer if there isn't a maximum health limit, so that you can't waste heals from the coins. But anyway, nice work!

Delta Fighter by LiauJ 2019-04-30T08:52:36Z

Simple yet quite fun! The background effects are pretty cool. The rings are a bit tricky to time vs shooting asteroids, but since they're not critical I have no complaints about it. This could really use some music!

Blood, Sweat, Tears by falstro 2019-04-29T15:07:43Z

I feel like the battles are a bit too hard for me. Although kiting is a strategy, it's not very easily executed because you can't aim with your mouse. The map is vast but very empty. I would also love to know the cost of upgrades in the shop.

Cellvelution by TrueDima 2019-05-01T07:04:27Z

The concept sounds very interesting, but due to the lack of a scrolling background and attack feedback, I have no idea if what I'm doing had any effect at all...

Designated Victim by toasteater 2019-04-29T05:01:34Z

@zactical Thank you! The way to progress is mentioned in the last page of the tutorial, after you destroy the turret, but it may be a bit easy to miss. Most of the game scales to your playing ability, but the boss always approach at full throttle. There're enemies that can be farmed for life, make full use of them if you're having difficulties!

Designated Victim by toasteater 2019-04-29T13:27:29Z

Thanks to everyone for playing! It does appear that the game needs to do a better job at telling players where to go. It's kind of hard to figure out when working alone and it's invaluable to know!

Designated Victim by toasteater 2019-04-29T15:03:16Z

@florian-thurner Thanks for playing!

@zetius Thanks for the feedback. The tutorial could be made a bit more clear I guess! For now, I'll add that to the controls section of the page.

Designated Victim by toasteater 2019-04-29T15:17:21Z

@randdir Sorry, what do you mean by "start with not the first screen but more the game room"? I can't seem to understand that very well.

If by "the first room" you mean "Room 0/10" at the top-left corner, then that's the tutorial room. You have to follow the on-screen instructions to progress. If you want to skip the tutorial, right-clicking on the first page will take you directly to the game.

Designated Victim by toasteater 2019-04-29T15:43:54Z

@randdir To be honest, I can't decipher a large chunk of your comment, but I think I know where to look at now. Thanks for playing and giving feedback!

Thanks for playing everyone! Glad you enjoyed it!.

Designated Victim by toasteater 2019-04-30T08:38:55Z

@digigee Thank you! Health is represented by the time left in your life (upper-left corner). Taking hits reduce health, and absorbing bullets increase it (by a much smaller amount). I agree that the tutorial has some room for improvement.

@liauj Thanks for playing! Glad you liked the art style.

Designated Victim by toasteater 2019-04-30T13:13:59Z

@fullmontis Surprised that the executable didn't work for you, especially as I'm developing on Linux myself, but I'm glad it worked out in the end. Thank you for playing!

If you care to provide some details, which distro are you on? I don't think it should matter since Godot is mostly static linked, but there might be edge cases.

Designated Victim by toasteater 2019-04-30T14:12:02Z

@fullmontis I see. I use a custom build of Godot with various PRs from myself cherry-picked. I also compile with Clang and optimize for speed (as opposed to size, which you might be doing because you're exporting to Web). That may or may not explain the problem and the size difference. I'll look into this when I get the time. Thanks for reporting!

Designated Victim by toasteater 2019-05-01T02:04:08Z

Thanks everyone for playing and giving such kind words. I'm very flattered!

@caevv You need to survive for 60 seconds for the boss fight. I think it would be clearer if the boss had a timer of itself, but the boss intro (cutscene?) was hastily added during the last hours by a sleepy me who didn't realize it :) I agree that the items are under-explained. It's quite lacking especially given that time continue to flow as you inspect the upgrades. Thanks for the feedback!

Designated Victim by toasteater 2019-05-01T13:22:02Z

@aileron As for the vendor machines, I did set it up that way, so you can say it was intentional. I can see how the behavior can be annoying when you're short on time, however. The vendor machines can use some additional visual and auditory cues, too. Thank you for playing and giving feedback!

@justuspan Using icons for upgrades looks like a very good idea to improve readability. Thanks!

Bioenfluencer by caevv 2019-04-30T03:48:39Z

Nice graphics and mood! I find the matrix mechanic especially fun and innovative. I think a little bit more feedback on players' actions would make it clearer how to progress.

Market Master by zactical 2019-04-29T05:40:08Z

Nice game, but I don't really like the sound effect when stocks crash... I find it very distracting for an event that happens fairly often.

Slice of Scythe by Miyolophone 2019-05-01T08:18:51Z

The 19-year-old cousin of Death is very cute. Unfortunately I can't figure out the minigames at all... Got the equations rejected, got a "Game Over" after hitting the counter on time, etc. Despite that, somehow $40 showed up and I saw the ending. I don't know what's happening.

But the 19-year-old cousin of Death is very cute. And the soundtrack is awesome.

Also, come to think about it, wouldn't it be easier to just kill the people and take their money directly?

Anyway, the 19-year-old cousin of Death is very cute.

LD45 — Start with nothing

ZERMATT: ZERO by FireSlash 2019-10-08T04:51:29Z

The art and sound work is outstanding as is expected from this crew. The mood is on point. Great game overall.

SOMtHINGa from NoThINGa by Jimbly 2019-10-07T15:19:50Z

Very fun to play, and feels pretty innovative. The sound and music are very coherent and fitting with the puzzle gameplay. Great game!

The Journey with Her by cirno 2019-10-07T13:15:23Z

The way narrative is embedded in levels is very impressive and really contributes to the mood!

Some of the puzzles midway are difficult but quite rewarding when finally solved. Later levels get a bit grindy, though, with many blocks to move around and not much real difficulty. Still, it's a really fun game. Nice entry!

Warden of Void by kessutinnu 2019-10-07T11:13:17Z

Level destruction is a pleasant surprise for this theme. I like this idea! Most of the time I end up carefully picking blocks one-by-one, though, so I didn't get to see the majesty of Nothing very often. Solid game nevertheless!

Singularity by dob 2019-10-08T05:45:25Z

It's arguably less about graphics and more about level design, but I love how the constellations look! Nice game!

Grow quickly by congusbongus 2019-10-07T10:21:49Z

I like the music and sound effects! I didn't quite understand the conditions for completing a stage, but the gameplay itself is easy enough to grasp. Nice game!

S.W.N by silkworm_sweatshop 2019-10-20T14:22:02Z

The interpretation of the theme is quite interesting. The "tutorial" introduced the mechanics very well, and had a smooth difficulty curve. Like others have said above, it did leave me wanting actual levels rather than an editor at the end. Despite that, it's really amazing that you finished a level editor within Compo. Nice game overall!

Ultra Quest by 100th_Coin 2019-10-07T14:01:06Z

No pants Wizard by agar3s 2019-10-20T13:54:17Z

Quite silly but solid entry. I ended up using the penguin for all the mini-games, as it has the most precise controls, but I guess that wasn't quite the intention. If different birds should be used for each of the mini-games, it might be nice to be able to predict the mini-game ahead of time.

Nice game!

ARCADE GIRL by ROBOWARRIOR1982 2019-10-14T03:34:41Z

Hold X to Focus by toasteater 2019-10-07T10:03:53Z

@congusbongus @kessutinnu Thanks for playing! Like the jump, the air dash is variable, and in some places it might be better to not use the full length. I recognize that it takes some effort to get through the final area, and it can be done consistently. However, there is probably not enough content in-between for one to get used to the controls, due to the time constraint.

Thanks for giving feedback!

Hold X to Focus by toasteater 2019-10-07T14:51:33Z

@cirno I'm happy that you noticed the references! It is indeed a conscious imitation. And by tradition I shall speak nothing about the story...

Hold X to Focus by toasteater 2019-10-08T07:24:00Z

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

@corrade If you have already got both the dash and the wall jump, then left is the way to go. This respawn point should only trigger when you are ready, so if you haven't got the abilities yet, it may be a bug.

If you have already got the abilities, here's some hints:

1. You can wall jump after a dash. 2. You can bounce between walls. There is no limit to the times you can wall jump. 3. You can dash again after performing a wall jump.

Hold X to Focus by toasteater 2019-10-08T09:03:42Z

@burnedkirby Thank you!

@corrade Thanks for playing regardless! Also,

@zanthous Thanks for reporting the bug. I can confirm that it's possible to get softlocked if you try to interact with things while the character is still in bed. Sorry I didn't catch it in development. It's possible to normally progress even if you skipped a drawing, if you wait until the character is out of the bed.

I will add it to the Known Issues section and release a post-compo version with a fix later.

Hold X to Focus by toasteater 2019-10-09T12:57:09Z

Thanks to everyone for playing and giving valuable feedback! You are awesome.

While the absolute difficulty level is as intended, the controls, player guidance in level design, and the difficulty curve certainly still have much room for improvement. Hopefully I'll get better at those aspects in the future.

Hopefully!

Hold X to Focus by toasteater 2019-10-10T02:50:30Z

@dimlight Thanks! That's a very reasonable suggestion. I'll keep it in mind. I did add some spikes to prevent falling to previous checkpoints, but I might not have covered all the cases.

Hold X to Focus by toasteater 2019-10-14T03:31:13Z

@robowarrior1982 Thanks for playing! Controllers should be supported by the engine but I didn't test it.

@snesgaard Thanks! That's one more set of common key maps I should keep in mind. While I think it would be a bit uncomfortable to perform long platforming sequences with space as the jump key, I still consider it important to cover common controls in a game jam.

Hold X to Focus by toasteater 2019-10-20T13:54:32Z

@silkworm-sweatshop Thanks for playing and finishing the game!

@mapedorr That's a very good idea! If I had more time to work on the game, I'd certainly add some interaction between the worlds. The controls may use some improvements, I agree. As for the mechanic, I shall leave it up to your interpretation. Thank you for playing!

Flourish by Corrade 2019-10-08T07:59:54Z

The graphics are very well drawn. The wind control feels natural and generates a nice mood. Removing the pests can be a little challenging, but very nice game overall!

Wordplay by FoolishFire 2019-10-07T08:34:21Z

I stopped for a moment before realizing that you started with "nothing". Nice use of the theme!

While playing, I find it a little bit hard to figure out the "correct" words to assemble, and often had to resort to trial-and-error. So although it might be against the minimalism, some guidance can really help keeping the game fun for me.

I played the zip version and the music isn't playing on my system.

Nice game!

I liked The Stanley Parable and it's nice to see a reference to it! I think what I've seen is the ending judging from the discussion above. The game is short but pretty interesting!

LD46 — Keep it alive

December 20XX by verrazano 2020-04-21T08:02:50Z

I like how the campfire is a robot and can move by itself. That's a nice twist. Some music would also have been really great. Nice game!

Battery Life by fazz 2020-04-24T14:01:27Z

The mechanic is simple but tightly executed. Graphics are very good when running in fullscreen. Found my way out on the second try mostly due to luck. Nice Game!

Get Away From My Human by hectorid 2020-04-24T14:43:30Z

The graphics are nice. I like how the game over screen is a satire of the Windows BSOD, complete with an unhelpful error code. Nice game!

My Pet's Dungeon by N.O. Games 2020-04-20T13:12:11Z

Here am I buying pizza expecting it to be a restorative.

Deamon Flower by JustusPan 2020-04-21T11:51:34Z

The graphics are really great!

Final Instruction by toasteater 2020-04-20T06:05:24Z

@rafit345 Many thanks for the detailed review! I've decided to opt out of the Humor category for this entry. The in-game tutorial was a rushed last-minute addition, as the scope went a little bit overboard. I'll add a textual guide to the game page a bit later. Thanks for playing!

Final Instruction by toasteater 2020-04-20T12:08:25Z

Thanks everyone!

@nirose It's mapped in such a way that both Arrows + Z/X and WASD + E/Q can be used. If you prefer Arrows for movement, you may use Z/X with your left hand. Alternatively, you may control with only left hand using WASD + E/Q. I don't imagine you'll have to move your hands a lot either way.

Final Instruction by toasteater 2020-04-22T06:10:36Z

Thanks for all your kind words!

@foursay For the music and some of the sound effects I used both the free (as in beer) [Synth1](https://daichilab.sakura.ne.jp/softsynth/) synthesizer and [FM8](https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/synths/fm8/) from Native Instruments. I can really recommend Synth1. It's surprisingly good for software that don't cost money!

current by zzox 2020-04-22T09:02:34Z

The puzzles are very solid, the graphics and audio comes together well. I'd only wish for more levels! Nice game!

Rewilding: The Story of Wolfhead Valley by ChloeOfArroyo 2020-04-20T12:50:43Z

Got about 240 on the second try. It's very fun to see things interact in a cellular-automaton-like fashion. The game feels balanced, and the visual style are also very nice. Good work!

You Can't Die! by Nirose 2020-04-20T12:27:43Z

Nice game! I like the understated visuals a lot. The palette works really well. Other than the unfamiliar control that others had mentioned, I found that the combo numbers look a bit blurry. Perhaps you forgot to use nearest-neighbor for them?

The HeartBeat by pomelouncia 2020-04-24T15:50:40Z

The art is very well done, and the mechanic worked very well to create the atmosphere of emergency. The heart beat being synchronized to the music is a nice touch. The writing is good, including the most certainly considered decision to make it filler-heavy. All in all, this is definitely an excellent jam game in terms of production value. Great job getting it finished!

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Heaven Slash by FireSlash 2020-10-07T08:03:04Z

Nice game, but whoever ported this did a terrible job. How can they leave out ouka_ero.gif?

Another One Loops the Dust by limered 2020-10-07T10:28:48Z

I enjoy the music and art style. Run-time audio manipulation is a great idea and is implemented very well. I wasn't able to figure out what I was supposed to do for a while, but eventually I realized that I should let the record play to the end. Perhaps a lose condition would have made that clearer. Nice game!

Another by kuro 2020-10-07T14:21:20Z

There's a huge amount of polish here for 48 hours: the visuals are very enjoyable, and the ambient sound serves the mood well. The in-game hints made the mechanic easy to grasp, even without textual descriptions. Great entry overall!

Chronolings by edomiyamoto 2020-10-06T14:34:58Z

It took a bit of time before I could understand what's going on, but once I did this looks like a solid clicker. The visuals are really nice. Good job!

Loop Line! by Sacer 2020-10-06T15:47:54Z

Nice game! I like the little references in the map, and how you can go really fast with just a few speed upgrades. The art style is rough but nicely aesthetic.

That Time I Was Held Hostage By Some Loop, So I Followed The Road And I Was Fine by alaah 2020-10-06T17:17:24Z

I like this game. It's great. The voice acting is just the cherry on the top. I like this game.

Neverending partyween by imod 2020-10-07T06:05:59Z

I love the art style. The characters are really cute! I also like how the music speeds up and changes in atmosphere as the end of the 2-minute clock close in. It feels very well-thought-out even though it does go out of sync eventually. Overall this is a very nice game. Had a lot of fun trying to figure it out!

Keys and Goblins by FinalForeach 2020-10-06T15:24:35Z

Nice game! I found that it's still possible to walk around after clearing the game, and that there is another exit hidden somewhere in the level... but I guess what happens next is supposed to be secret!

Looper by Maytch 2020-10-07T11:15:08Z

Very nice-looking and pretty fun to play. Being able to choose from multiple control schemes is a good touch. Nice game!

Deep Winter by Copito 2020-10-08T16:19:23Z

The character animations look very nice, and I like the overall mood. As the others have already mentioned, it could certainly benefit from some sounds: even basic sfxr sound effects can go a surprisingly long way in improving the game feel!

LoopChan by Kaish 2020-10-06T16:05:24Z

Cool mechanic and solid level design. Fits the theme really well. The bot is cute. Nice game!

Recurring Detective by RedGuyFromHell 2020-10-06T16:18:44Z

The visuals are really nice! Even though the story is unfinished, having a working build by the end is already an achievement. Hope you all will go on to create greater works in the future!

The Loop I Stuck In by Foursay 2020-10-07T06:36:27Z

Nice game! The ambient soundtrack fits the mood perfectly, although the sound effects can be a bit too loud compared to it at times, which makes it harder to enjoy it in the fullest.

Among Stars and Robots by jaoel 2020-10-07T15:27:06Z

Nice idea meets quality execution, resulting in a very solid game overall! I didn't realize that one could (apparently) modify the commands mid-movement until I read the comment section, after clearing the game assuming that I'm stuck with the loops. Well done!

Get in the Loop! by toasteater 2020-10-09T04:49:55Z

Thanks everyone for playing and rating! Especially those who left a review: you made this jam worthwhile for me. Thank you very much!

@sarahs7 Thanks for the feedback! I know that the controls are awkward: it's intentional.

Runaway Railcar by Michael Horst 2020-10-06T15:08:41Z

Really well executed! I like how the game forces the player to change how to approach the levels by speeding the cart up gradually. I got a few dropped frames with a 5700XT, but otherwise it was a good experience. Nice entry!

GLASS CLEANER 2077 by 730 2020-10-09T18:43:04Z

A good parody of VA11 HALL-A -- someone has to clean those glasses. Great mood, nice writing, and a close integration of narrative theme and gameplay. 3 sigmas of extra soul compared to the average entry.

HERO BURGER by mhm32167 2020-10-08T04:53:08Z

Simple mechanics but nicely delivered. Good work!

Bjorn to Dance by Tomh 2020-10-06T13:52:32Z

Great graphics, and there's really a lot of polish overall. Nice game!

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Dig Deeper & Digger by gonutz 2021-04-29T11:19:32Z

Cute art and sound effects, and quite fun for how simple it is! The hitboxes of the carrots seem to be a bit too small, as for many times I have moved into a carrot only to miss it. Congrats on finishing the game!

Nuclear blaze by deepnight 2021-04-26T18:17:28Z

The graphics are truly awesome! The appearances of fire, water and smoke are just right. With the lack of checkpoints, some later levels are a bit tedious, but overall the game is just amazing, even in its current silent state. Great work as expected from the legendary deepnight!

Descentris by PhilStrahl 2021-04-26T17:36:52Z

This is really innovative and pretty fun to play. A good idea done well. I like how there is a constant balance between staying high for the ability to observe and find optimal paths, and digging low for better protection against bad shape rolls. Nice game!

Mrs. ScubaMan by Shaolin Dave 2021-04-28T06:36:20Z

Interesting how she is a _Mrs._ but also a Scuba_Man_ :) Nice game. Some music would be great!

Fore! by TheBlondeBass 2021-04-27T09:30:33Z

I enjoyed the mechanic a lot. I've found that it's a lot harder to reason with 2-digit numbers: had the most challenge with the level with that restriction. Nice game!

Wink! by KP_CFTSZ 2021-04-27T06:18:07Z

I like this aesthetic. Great to see another game using it! The appearance is polished, and the game looks like it's very funny just from the screenshots. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get it to work at all. I could find no files or keys whatsoever in the file explorer, only the option to go deeper (or shallower?) into the parent folder `..`. I kept doing that for about two minutes before I gave up. It's a pity I can't experience it first-hand. Still looks very cool in the screenshots, though!

Wink! by KP_CFTSZ 2021-04-27T14:41:48Z

@kp-cftsz Thanks, that worked. It's fun indeed! Maybe you could put that into the description in case anyone else encounters something similar.

Dive to live by Jammin 2021-04-28T08:58:15Z

Lovely art and music! It would be even better if the sections were longer and the music changes were less abrupt, because the soundtrack is so enjoyable! Nice game!

Just Another Job by ynneblack 2021-05-01T16:00:40Z

This is pretty nice! While the graphics are indeed cozy as one of the commenters mentioned, the mood of the story is on contrary rather unsettling. I wonder if this stylistic clash is intentional? The writing gave me just enough hints to get an intuition of what's going on, but if you do make a post-jam version, it'd be great if you let readers dig just a bit deeper into the client's secrets (and check their answers!).

On the techinical side, I had some trouble initially trying to run the game. The exe did nothing on Windows, but the shell script did work for me on Linux. There was no audio at all, though, for some reason. It might also be good to check the penguin box for the `pc` download, too, since you advertise a Linux version here on LD.

Solid entry overall!

Just Another Job by ynneblack 2021-05-02T08:15:20Z

@ynneblack

> did you try adjusting the sound in settings? The default is preset to mid-range volume, but maybe that somehow got reset in Linux version?

I didn't, but I tried again today and this time it worked out of the box somehow. Did you make any changes to the "LD48 1.0 for PC/Linux" download, other than the name? Anyway, it works now for me so that's good.

> did you ever run other Ren’py games on the PC successfully?

I've been able to run DDLC and Highway Blossoms on the PC in question. I believe those were made with Ren'py but I could be wrong.

Lord of Mine by JustusPan 2021-04-27T09:32:39Z

Nice graphics and combat system! I think the system has a lot of potential, even though currently it's so easy to bomb all three points that there is little point in using other tools, and battle becomes a bit monotonous. This could be fixed by the economic system, but you can also introduce more movement patterns. Good job!

DO NOT INSERT INSIDE THE EAR CANAL!!! by cheesepencil 2021-04-29T16:39:22Z

I don't know why but OHHHHH this is so funny! It's simple, it's short, but YEAHHHHH I like it.

Redeeppedeer by toasteater 2021-04-26T10:10:34Z

@peace-of-cake-games Thank you! I'm very surprised that someone played this even without me posting it anywhere. I'm planning to do an update later since I want to finish the story as well!

@righy I didn't get to implement a good ending in the Compo, so right now there's technically no such thing as right or wrong! I'm sorry it wasn't fun for you, but not knowing whether you're doing something right or wrong is part of the intended experience this time. If there was a good ending, I probably could have made better use of `notes.txt` to signal progress to the player, though.

Redeeppedeer by toasteater 2021-04-26T22:25:01Z

@yulotomorrow Thanks! Your criticism is on point -- in retrospect, emulating an active board *and* interleaving enough clues to make it click required way more writing than what I usually do. Something that I quickly realized after I began writing with what I naively thought was enough time left. As an AVG, this is basically not-a-game-yet, and I recognize that. Learned a lot about development (and my limits) this jam, and I think that's what matters for me :)

Redeeppedeer by toasteater 2021-04-28T06:12:51Z

@shaolin-dave The game ends after one week of in-game time, but there is no real ending yet, so this is more of a proof-of-concept than anything else. Player guidance in the early game is certainly something I'll want to think about post-jam. Thanks for your feedback!

Redeeppedeer by toasteater 2021-04-29T14:30:25Z

@nyxkn I wish I had more time to actually finish the story. Hopefully I'll be able to finish the update before Play & Rate ends (I'll mark it clearly distinct from the jam version, of course). Indeed, the UI doesn't quite have the quality-of-life features that modern users have come to expect. The balance between QoL and authenticity will be delicate, but I'll try harder to find a sweet spot there. Thanks a lot for your feedback. Alisa will be fine, that I can guarantee!

Redeeppedeer by toasteater 2021-05-01T15:20:01Z

@ynneblack I agree that it would be best to have an option to scale the text / graphics up to appear better on a modern monitor. Some of the base font sizes need to be adjusted, and while allowing arbitrary font sizes might be difficult, also adding an option to scale the viewport 2x should be easy and good enough. Agreed with the points about the notepad, too. Thanks for your feedback!

Beaver Submarine by cagibi 2021-04-26T13:39:57Z

Had a really nice moment bouncing around in the submarine. Operating the sub is hard, but even mishaps felt quite good with juicy lighting effects and simulated background objects. The fish do seem to be a bit too hard to hit, though. It's very rare that you can manage to consciously aim at them, and once they (quickly) stick to the top/bottom of your ship there's little you can do. I've managed to clear the game despite this thanks to the very lenient timer, but it felt frustrating nevertheless. Great game overall!

grem by zzox 2021-04-26T14:09:30Z

Nicely polished overall and pretty fun to play. I finished the game mostly by just lucking into exits, though, so I didn't quite manage to figure the purpose of the round objects out. Perhaps a larger vision range could help players be more strategic? Still, there's a solid idea here, and you did a great job implementing it!

GUNHOOK by 730 2021-04-27T06:38:51Z

Nice retro feel! The hookshot is pretty cool, even though it can be slightly buggy and get you stuck at times. Enemies are a bit hard to see when they're right above you. Might be good to allow the billboard effect to apply to the Z-axis as well. It could be explained better how this is related to the theme, but this looks nice nevertheless!

Astral Descension by nyxkn 2021-04-29T15:00:10Z

I think you captured the mysterious mood very well! The music is coherent with it, too. I stopped at the normal ending because on a calibrated monitor, the contrast between normal tiles and the void is really small, which ironically made normal walking much harder than memorizing glowing paths, the supposedly difficult part. I'm not sure if this is intentional, but it is a bit frustrating for me. Still, this is a pretty solid entry overall. Well done!

Down Whale by notpjriavs 2021-04-28T07:00:37Z

The title and environment art is truly awesome! Like a commenter above I didn't realize that foraging for fuel is a thing you need to do at the beginning as well. Great game!

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-26T10:57:30Z

Nice game! Surprised how quickly the very first choice led me to an ending. The tagline really isn't a lie is it.

Pond-zi Scheme by Fatebreak 2021-04-29T11:00:00Z

Nice interpretation of the theme, quite creative and very humorous. I like the voice acting too. The color scheme is a bit hard to read, but other than that this is pretty solid! Good work!

Adventure: Depths & Dangers by yulotomorrow 2021-04-26T12:59:04Z

Wow that was a pretty wild ride. Each part of the gameplay is rather simple but I like how the narrative comes together. I agree that the ocean part could use some improvement: a background parallax would have the most immediate effect as Jeffez said, but some bubble particles would also have been nice. Beside that, the music is nice and the art is cute. Nice game!

Adventure: Depths & Dangers by yulotomorrow 2021-04-26T18:24:14Z

@yulotomorrow Whoops. I just checked it again and yes you're right. There is a bubble effect! I guess the static bubbles in the background just left a bigger impression on me. Sorry!

Dungeon Painter by IanTheBee 2021-04-26T15:04:12Z

Painting the dungeon feels very nice! I like those splashes a lot. Previous commenters mentioned this already, but the feel that slow-and-safe is the only way forward is echoed here, as well. The boss can be cheesed by just standing on the initial ramp and dodging only the projectiles, which makes it a lot easier than intended. Enjoyed the playthrough. Solid game overall!

Stretch B4U Race by duplicatedframe 2021-04-29T10:23:19Z

The art style is really lovely. It's amazing that you made a online game! Unfortunately I can't seem to get the game to launch on my computer. It just freezes after the initial unity logo :( As a result, I have only rated the graphics and audio categories that I can judge from the video. Please tell me if this is ever fixed. I really wanted to try this!

Stretch B4U Race by duplicatedframe 2021-05-02T08:24:26Z

@duplicatedframe I have Visual Studio on my machine already so I don't think I'm missing the redist, but I tried installing it individually and it didn't do anything, unfortunately. The process doesn't seem to be using any CPU, so it might be blocking on some operation on the main thread, I think? Is there anything you do on startup that can lead to that?
