Sounds Are horrible

adam-clayden 2019-04-29 20:40

@mia-devs Welp, good thing I opted out of audio ratings!

grllle 2019-04-29 21:24

Only have a mac atm...would it be possible to make a macos or webgl build? I want to experience those horrible sounds too!!!!! :D

adam-clayden 2019-04-29 21:45

@grllle I might be able to get a webgl one up. To be honest I hadn't even thought about building to multiple platforms! I'll see how much a build change breaks my game and make a decision based on that :D

kristinnes 2019-04-29 22:20

I always appreciate a stick man game. But the game was a bit confusing. I did not know why I was crowning some old guys, and when tax time came it was pretty unclear what was happening.

slimabob 2019-04-29 22:34

Funny premise- great little game for a 48hr game jam!

adam-clayden 2019-04-29 22:40

@kristinnes Thanks for the feedback! What would you suggest to get rid of the confusion? I suppose I could add a short cutscene at the start to create a quick "to the point" story?

pusheeneiro 2019-04-29 23:45

These sounds and cutscenes are what I needed in a perfect game <3

chawls-v 2019-04-29 23:50

I liked the audio! I thought it was funny. Funny take on the theme, great work!

thomas-foster 2019-04-30 13:08

audio meme worthy

adam-clayden 2019-04-30 13:58

@grllle I tried a WebGL build but it's too laggy so sorry about that! If you watch the youtube clip though you can pretty much see the gameplay.

@slimabob @pusheeneiro @chawls-v @thomas-foster Thank you all very much!

dooda 2019-04-30 16:28

It is a rather nice submission. However I do think the main issue is clarity, I honestly didn't know how what I was doing affected the game, a small text blurb could work or better yet maybe showing an example at the beginning. But its nice that you gave the audio a personal touch.

team-on 2019-04-30 18:11

Top 10 sounds. You definitely should enable sounds ratings

adam-clayden 2019-04-30 18:35

@team-on I didn't want to because I thought audio related moreso to having a decent soundtrack etc, whereas mine is just random quotes. Not sure what the rules are on enabling after the deadline though

szabe 2019-04-30 20:19

Yeah, this is a bit all over the place, a bit more clarity would have been nice. I am actually quite fond of the art style, and the design, but it needs a bit more expanding.

josefnpat 2019-04-30 20:23

Interesting game! I really like the voiceovers, they're fun, but i'm not sure I entirely understand what I'm doing in the game, unless it's to just "glorify peasants" and not let them touch me, lol.

Fun game, I got to 40!

mrtnldm 2019-04-30 20:25

Great voice acting! I think it makes LD games super nice and unique!

adam-clayden 2019-04-30 20:30

@szabe Thanks for the feedback! @josefnpat Thank you! That's literally it. A twitch based game where you glorify peasants to get a highscore. If you miss one then you get a penalty, and they move into you and take your money! @mrtnldm thank you!

nayaki-anandan 2019-04-30 20:50

This was hilarious, Love the idea. Definitely need to put some control instructions in there somewhere, and every time the screen shook the game was laggy. I'd love to see it more polished! but it was still super hilarious and cool.

adam-clayden 2019-04-30 20:55

@nayaki-anandan Thanks for the feedback! I should add the option to turn off screenshake for accessibility I think. Perhaps the lag was a result of my 3am spaghetti code!

sempiternal 2019-04-30 23:45

I wish the artstyle was a bit more consistent. Stick figures fit the game just fine, should've made everything else the same doodly art. Great job on the voice acting, made me giggle quite a bit playing the game :D

adam-clayden 2019-04-30 23:53

@sempiternal Thanks for the feedback! I agree with you, but my drawing really is terrible, ha. I'll try and improve my art skills for the next one! I need to get a style locked down so the end result isn't so bad

michael-feldman 2019-05-01 00:50

I like the approach. Actually reminds me a lot of my game. Yours has good flow, highly repeatable (makes for a good casual game), nice menu with a high score tracker. A lot of quality audio. I mean this man did his VOs, vocal audio track, and beat box. I'm impressed. Well done!

black-potion 2019-05-01 02:50

Dabbing peasant out of existence!

ilprinny 2019-05-01 04:49

Boom. Aren't I charming?

toasteater 2019-05-01 07:15

That's some 5/5 programmer art and voice acting right there. Sadly you didn't enable rating on Graphics and Audio...

adam-clayden 2019-05-01 11:51

@toasteater Thanks! I was going for humour more than anything. I thought audio meant really good soundtracks etc, not my voice acting, ha!

dflinders 2019-05-01 13:52

loved the art and humor :D

bbaf 2019-05-01 21:02

Voiceovers are hilarious  Additional plus for the entering cut-scene. Gameplay is easy and fun. Overall - nice entry!

fashionbatman 2019-05-01 21:12

"No peasants! No!" That was hilarious, I would've given a high score to audio! Great job!

minemes 2019-05-01 23:08

Best Soundbites ;D

luckyfeathers 2019-05-02 12:58

Audio and graphics are the epitome of programmer art! I love it! :D Just what I expect when playing compo games. My problem here is your gameplay loop. It's quite confusing at the beginning what's actually going on. Although you have a quick tutorial, it's not really explained anywhere what 'economy' and 'funds' actually mean. Also, I think the peasants arrive too early in the beginning. If they come slower at the beginning, you give the player a chance to grasp what's going on, and then the spawn rate can gradually increase.

adam-clayden 2019-05-02 13:30

@luckyfeathers Thank you! What would you suggest to help explain the economy and funds? Maybe I could weave that into the tutorial as well, and force the player to tax at least once so that all the controls are used? Spawn rate is definitely an issue as time goes on. It gets chaotic fast, it's something I'd like to get under control. Thanks for taking the time to play!

luckyfeathers 2019-05-02 14:42

@adam-clayden Yes, put it in the tutorial. Also, slow everything down in the beginning. A good rule of thumb to remember is that you have been practicing your game for 48 hours, but we only get to play it for 5-10 minutes. Try to make the game easy, and call that hard mode.

adam-clayden 2019-05-02 15:21

@luckyfeathers You're absolutely right, thanks for the advice!

corqi 2019-05-02 15:44

I liked your idea. The game was also funny. But unfortunately the controls were very clunky and didn't always respond correctly. But after all, nice game!

adam-clayden 2019-05-02 16:05

@corqi Thanks for the feedback! That's interesting. In which way do they not respond? If you hit the enemies correctly then the cooldown resets, but if you miss you get a 2 second penalty where you can't move at all. Is there a bug that I'm not aware of?

corqi 2019-05-02 16:24

@adam-clayden I can't really tell. There isn't really any indicator that shows where your attack will hit (besides hitting right or left), so dunno, maybe I was just missing. But my impressions as a player was that the controls were not responding.

mrjoshuamclean 2019-05-02 23:09

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/419497157?t=03h16m38s

P.S. Probably shouldn't have opted out of audio ;)

ogma 2019-05-02 23:49

Unexpected but nice and funny take on the concept.^^

Adding voices was a fun idea and the stickman is always an art direction I can get behind :p I really liked the onomatopoeias when you "glorify" the peasants.

As Corqi said, I found the controls kinda clunky. I wasn't even sure it was doing anything at first until I read your comment about the penalties^^" Adding some kind of feedback would be useful in that regard. Maybe a flash or a circle that "shrinks" as the time window passes or an exclamation or even the key you have to press or just to inform you about the penalty.

Anyway, good job! o/

attala 2019-05-05 12:44

Priceless voiceovers :) Found the game a little bit too hard, but well done!

silvervalegames 2019-05-05 21:32

Bam! Shazam! Funny take on the theme, and great voiceovers. Well done!

adam-clayden 2019-05-06 19:22

@mrjoshuamclean maybe! I thought that rating was only for actual soundtracks though.. I'll just have to opt in during the next one!

@corqi Ah yeah I see what you mean. I need more visual feedback for "hits" vs "non hits" to help this.

@ogma Definitely stuff to consider, thank you very much for the feedback!

@attala @silvervalegames Thank you!

elysiagriffin 2019-05-08 22:01

@elysiagriffin Thank you for playing my game :)

jezzamon 2019-05-15 16:50

I think sound effects are fun haha.

I think the game is pretty hard to understand jumping into it. It wasn't clear why sometimes the A/D buttons didn't do anything, and I didn't feel I had enough time to understand what taxing did.

Might be good to get someone to play it during the game jam to get a feel for those types of usability things

adam-clayden 2019-05-17 11:32

@jezzamon Thank you for the feedback! I agree, there needs to be more to guide the player. The A/D range could be buffed as well
