LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Nightlight by AgentParsec 2015-12-19T04:47:00

For a game called "Nightlight" this sure is dark! xD

All kidding aside, I'd like the intro to be skippable. Also can't seem to get to the first plug unfortunately. :\ Might be related to me using keyboard controls? Speed seems to fluctuate a bit.

Anywho, it's a cool premise and I love the character and atmosphere - wish I could see more.

Hanami - Push-Up Farming by Beavl 2015-12-19T21:11:00

Pretty difficult to pay attention to both things at once but interesting concept. Would be super easy with two people though. xD

Personal Valley by Backterria 2015-12-15T18:30:00

Interesting control scheme, maybe too complex for two buttons. I like the graphics & audio. Took me a while to figure out what I was and what I was supposed to be doing but that could just be me. xD

Acrodog by dvdfu 2015-12-19T21:34:00

Man this game is hard. But it's fun and cute so I still want to keep playing. =]

The Story of the First Ants by Category5Kawaiiju 2015-12-15T20:19:00

Ohhh so THAT's where ants came from. I never knew! Great humor and a very interesting story. Personally, I wish there were more actual "game," and hitting up and down together is a bit finicky. But overall good stuff.

Slash Quest by Big Green Pillow ft Mgaia 2015-12-20T00:13:00

Cool! Took me a while to realize how to cross the water but could just be my rusty old brain from too many LDJAM games. Or not reading the description. xD

Otherwise, I really enjoyed this. Nice work.

Rogue Bladers: Cradle of disaster by Deconstructeam 2015-12-19T01:30:00

The impact in this game is ridiculously perfect. Didn't expect I could throw - well, things other than tires (to avoid spoilers) - so that was cool. Turning around is annoying but otherwise the control is pretty solid.

UPSQUID by 01010111 2015-12-20T02:57:00

Clever control scheme to avoid automatic movement (which so many of us used!). Really like the audio too, especially the music.

Cordinatos by PTSnoop 2015-12-15T20:39:00

I like how it fits the two-button theme, but switches the two buttons, almost making it feel like multiple minigames. Frustrating, minimalistic, but fun!

HamsterX by UntitledQ 2015-12-20T02:14:00

Really frustrating to get started out but once you've got a decent little device going it gets interesting.

B0T-4NY by Elemental Zeal Games Studios 2015-12-16T03:08:00

Hopelessly stuck 2/3rds through. Cool art and sound. Puzzles could be a little more open to alternate, logical solutions. Like, I have three containers, I shouldn't be required to use one specific kind of container to get water. But otherwise cool stuff.

CMDR LR by timtipgames 2015-12-20T03:24:00

Pretty hard, but quite fun. Good stuff.

The Mad Circle For The Glorious Dice Tower by Volatile Dove 2015-12-19T01:13:00

Interesting matching game. Music is certainly unique - I especially like the creaky chair in the first level tune. xD

Chaintanks by ProjectX593 2015-12-20T03:06:00

Not really enough in the way of defensive options and I kind of expect tank controls (because, y'know xD) but it's pretty fun. I like the sounds and the shooting is pretty polished. Would be cool as multiplayer, especially something like 32-player online battles! Although that might be overkill for its size.

Rolla Grolla Arena by Xanjos 2015-12-17T04:27:00

Cool idea, a Smash Bros. feel with rolly physics. Graphics are simple but effective. Agree with rogberth about the Mario Party thing - like a 2D Bumper Balls. Music could be a little less repetitive. Interesting start.

Generic Tycoon Game by krika08 2015-12-19T05:05:00

I like that the shortened "programmer" kind of looks like "programmer ammo." xD

That said, it's a bit too fast and could use some kind of goal. Also would be nice to see how much of each thing I have. But for what it is, it's okay.

EarthWard by luke 2015-12-17T00:22:00

The music & graphics are great, and the controls are nice. Running out of fuel and getting basically stranded kind of sucks but otherwise the gameplay is cool. Loved the "I'd rather not play again" message - won't spoil it here. xD

G.R.O.W (Growth and Reduction avOidance Wing) by DeathBySnail 2015-12-16T20:26:00

Really cool. Love the game-in-a-game and voiced sound effects and music. Collision with the + or - seems a bit finicky or maybe I'm just expecting it to be easier. xD Good work!

Slime Smasher by Anachron 2015-12-20T02:01:00

I think I'd rather have had silly sound effects than the "music" but it is pretty catchy anyway. xD

Got through three slimes. Really quite difficult, but kinda fun.

PinFootBall by wdebowicz 2015-12-19T21:29:00

Easy to play, fun and addicting. Would have preferred the opponent goalkeeper to be a little bit smarter, and some more variety (not that I have a clue how you'd do that effectively in this context), but other than that I couldn't stop playing. Cool stuff!

Major Tom by OberynMartell 2015-12-16T03:38:00

Oh man, my machine can't handle this on WebGL at all - it's like 10 fps. Anyway, got it running on Windows. Cool ambiance with the music, nifty graphics. It's really challenging, but in a good way. Reminds me of old-school lander games.

Snowball Fight by cakesauce 2015-12-15T03:26:00

Pretty catchy tune and I like the Christmas atmosphere. Not much challenge, though - I can't seem to lose. Good work!

Snake Growth by jonask 2015-12-19T01:18:00

Cool puzzle take on the traditional snake game. Would have liked higher resolution and some sounds but otherwise it's pretty solid!

SUPER PLANT FRENZY by Glint Games 2015-12-15T03:33:00

Congrats on getting both of the themes in! Really like the critters and the music. Controls are a bit disorienting near the walls, but I had fun anyway.

Survive by peejaygee 2015-12-15T20:58:00

Maybe I'm missing something? The movement drains like crazy once I budge just a little bit. Kind of too hard because of the randomness.

Alice had it easy by DraKlaW 2015-12-18T21:09:00

Interesting premise. Text could be a bit larger, and it would be nice to see the scene change more than Alice growing to reflect the meters on the left and right. But it's a cool concept for two-button growing and shrinking! Cool art and a catchy tune, too.

Rainer by okeedokeben 2015-12-15T18:21:00

Love the minimalism here. Could be a little more visual cues on the different states - I found I was watching the meters more than the actual game art. But there's also a certain "zen" to the mood that I really like. Good work!

Pizza Panic by Didi 2015-12-15T04:56:00

Love the Game & Watch style, really works well with the two-button controls. And the music is pretty nifty.

Growdom by Wevel 2015-12-19T23:44:00

Can't get to the Windows build. :\

Cottron by MrMordem 2015-12-20T01:17:00

Is there auto-aim? Because it might need some polish. Cool music & sound. Pretty good start.

Billy's Big Day by Kitty553 2015-12-17T04:42:00

It's the Chansey minigame from Pokemon Stadium! Well, advanced a bit. Cool stuff. The music is fun and catchy, and it's nifty that the catching is timed to the music.

Would have been nice to see a list of possible falling things and which were good/bad/powerups. Didn't take long to figure it out, but would have been good to get a heads up. Otherwise, great stuff!

Wizard and The Sun by HolyBlackCat 2015-12-19T15:44:00

Neat puzzle platformer. Good progression, tight controls, decent graphics & ambient music. Sometimes frustrating in that VVVVVV sort of way but distinguishes itself with the teleport mechanic.

Little nitpick: should say you can walk "through" spikes since you can't really walk *on* them. Other than that the text is pretty solid.

The theme connection is a bit weak, but still probably my favorite entry so far. :)

SupRunner by agilejoshua 2015-12-15T20:35:00

Hilarious concept. Well-executed, although kind of frustrating that there's no lose screen!

Jumping J.A.C.K. by Donar 2015-12-20T04:27:00

The utilization of two buttons is pretty cool, and the hookshot feels pretty neat. Probably enough challenge without the limited thruster - this was a bi frustrating to run out of. Otherwise cool stuff!

Dancing Adventure by The Walking Kiwi 2015-12-16T20:13:00

Nice start. Start menu audio is a bit obnoxious, but the rest of the music is cool. Nifty graphics and a fun "dancing" mechanic - good start!

retrovirus by razieliyo 2015-12-15T04:39:00

Pretty complicated. Could do with a tutorial, but I like where the idea is going. Music & sound is nifty too, if a bit lo-fi. And the editor certainly stands out, even if it's buggy!

Ourobos by SinclairStrange 2015-12-20T03:13:00

Nifty little Metroid tribute. Impressive amount of content & gameplay for such a short period of time.

TRASH OR DIE by anotak 2015-12-18T21:41:00

Cool concept for doing the growing. Could do with more variety in enemies and movement patterns. It's a bit too easy because you have to intentionally wander into their line of fire to get hit. There also seems to be some lag when the enemies are hit - this might be intentional, but I think it makes the whole experience feel less smooth.

Overall a cool idea that could use some embellishment and polish.

GeoGrowth by SirJavaGaming 2015-12-20T15:52:00

Interesting music and fun graphics. In-game instructions could have helped and it would have been nice if it didn't eat my mouse so I could reposition the window, but otherwise good work.

Fellowship by TheMonsterFromTheDeep 2015-12-19T03:15:00

Goes quite a bit too fast, hard to readjust to click oncoming things with such a small resolution. Maybe could be scaled down to better see what's coming up. Otherwise, nifty graphics and the sounds/music fit nicely. Good work.

Battle Rose by goodbadokay 2015-12-16T18:48:00

Great audio & graphics. Collision may have been a bit iffy in spots? Not sure if it was the game or just me.

MANE by Enchae 2015-12-18T21:46:00

Old-school aesthetic is cool but the text sound is a bit obnoxious. Pretty funny premise, great graphics and music. Horribly frustrating but I feel that's the point. xD

Centi-Snake by utoxin 2015-12-15T04:44:00

Nifty idea. I really like the old-school vibe, and that you hit both of the themes. The movement sound is a bit grating, could maybe be a bit subtler. Some kind of music would help. Good work overall!

The Parable of the Knight, the Clown and the Lawyer by cgriff 2015-12-16T18:58:00

Twine is super cool! One of these days I need to jam in it. Impressive writing - is there an ending? I couldn't seem to find one.

Swarmonian Explorer by Teekeks 2015-12-16T02:51:00

Nifty idea for controlling a whole bunch of things at once. Kind of hard to distinguish the specific parts, could maybe be a little larger or zoomed in more, but otherwise fun!

Lumberjack vs. Ancient Druid's Cybertree by anv 2015-12-18T22:11:00

Funny concept, cool music & sound, nice graphics & animation. Wish there was a bit more variety than clicking trees--maybe some could require multiple hits? Love the Unreal announcer parody.

Combo Farm by Silverfyre 2015-12-19T03:35:00

Cool twist on the classic pipes mechanic. Reminds me of doing the pipes in SimCity, but with a Harvest Moon scenario. Would definitely work well on mobile. I'd like more from the music which gets a bit repetitive but the sounds are solid. Good stuff!

OSHIYA! PUSH! by inbetweengames 2015-12-15T18:37:00

This is amazing. I remember seeing early images of prototypes on Twitter and thinking "Where the heck is this going?" Fun rhythm game!

Ghoul by parias001 2015-12-15T04:49:00

Really great atmosphere in this one. Little bit rough around the edges--too difficult and the goal's a bit unclear IMHO--but I really enjoyed the haunting ambiance. Good work!

NanoBit by Weeping Rupee 2015-12-15T05:51:00

I like that you've flipped the cliche idea on its head, so growing is bad. The problem with the Super Meat Boy comparison is having to hit the button to restart makes dying a lot more frustrating than in SMB. But you're certainly onto something here - keep it up!

Chris Rostcowsky - The game by Shovix 2015-12-18T20:45:00

Interesting idea. Subtitle is mildly offensive. Gets to be a bit hard because it's a little too random but otherwise nifty infinite runner.

Super Scoot and the House of Ill Repute by Krafty 2015-12-20T01:48:00

Frustratingly difficult but so fun it's totally okay. Solid on gameplay and graphics, although music got a bit jarring eventually (too short of a loop) and I'd like to be able to go full screen or at least up the display resolution.

Attack of Tomato by hiki911 2015-12-18T21:02:00

Tomato gets stuck if you invert gravity too close to the ground in a corner. Also, would be nice to have a visual cue when you get hit--I thought it was one-hit kill and didn't realize there was health involved. Could use a bit more art, esp. animations and sound.

That said, excellent idea for two-button controls in a platformer and the design is pretty nifty. Tutorial level was a nice touch.

Re:sizer (VR Optional) by ObsessiveNerd 2015-12-20T01:24:00

I'd like an inverted mouse option (yeah I'm one of those people xD) and the cursor doesn't seem to lock in the screen in windowed mode (are you using Screen.lockCursor? should work...).

That said, really like the grow/shrink mechanic and the interesting things you've done with it. It's always a big ask to do something 3D during a jam but I think this is a solid start on mechanics. Cool stuff!

2 Roll by lawendt 2015-12-20T04:29:00

I like that you focused on the "two" part of the two-buttons and implemented two in the mechanic as well. Nice meditative music. Simple gameplay, but entertaining nonetheless.

it grows! by skripteriant 2015-12-16T20:11:00

Cool graphics and pretty fun. Would be better with an invert mouse option, and definitely needs some sound/music. I'd like to hear those doctors scream when you eat them! :]

PWANET PWOTECTOR by cilerba 2015-12-19T01:37:00

Nifty shooter with some adorable graphics and sounds. Kind of easy to die early on and hard to die later on which is a bit on its head, but the controls are solid. Although, I would have liked a fullscreen option because I kept clicking away from the window. xD

Clouk by pixelpotions 2015-12-19T20:52:00

I'd like to see play this in a more finished version. Seems the mechanics are there, just needs levels. Good start!

Sector5-0 by curtamyth 2015-12-16T02:56:00

Cool stuff. That cgMusic thing looks interesting, and it worked pretty well here.

Ouroboas by Koodere 2015-12-16T19:02:00

Agree with rkhadder - q and c are more distant than 1 and 9 on the numpad. Could maybe be q and x. Some nifty ideas here, although the controls are confusing. I'd rather have a turn left / turn right, personally.

Tubutten Beetle by YinYin 2015-12-20T04:10:00

Sprites are kinda big which makes it hard to react in time. Rolling up the walls is pretty clever. Could have a bit more variety, but good start!

Deep Growth by emanvidmaker 2015-12-16T20:06:00

Nice start. Start menu audio is a bit obnoxious, but the rest of the music is cool. Nifty graphics and a fun "dancing" mechanic - good start!

Deep Growth by emanvidmaker 2015-12-16T20:16:00

Bah my other comment was for a different game, sorry. DX

I really like the wall-climb mechanic and the dual play of raising the platform/climbing. The music is a bit short and obnoxious but the sounds are pretty decent. Overall, fun stuff.

Abyssal Zone by Leddev 2015-12-20T02:26:00

Nifty puzzle game. Love the Game Boy aesthetic. Having to repeatedly turn the same direction is a bit annoying, but works well with the turn-based puzzles. Solid work.

Organ-izer by The Merge Conflicts 2015-12-19T21:00:00

Kind of difficult with the random colors, but it's a really cool concept. Love the sounds & music - reminds me of Rareware N64 games, or minigames in Final Fantasy.

The Mystery of the 2 Buttons by ZONC 2015-12-15T04:07:00

Cool idea. Second one is a bit hard. Could use some more sound/ambience, esp. footsteps and "death" sound. Right on with the theme use.

White Rose by Kenneth Ng 2015-12-19T23:43:00

Looks and sounds pretty. Could use a bit more in the gameplay, like combos, multiple attacks, ranged attack, etc. and the enemies kind of crowd around you in an impossible fashion. But definitely a good start, and I like that your interpretation of the growing theme isn't just "something in the game grows because it can."

Cityblock by Ellian 2016-01-04T23:51:00

Interesting concept. Could have used a "what's coming next" display, and was a little confusing at first. Good sound & music.

Volve by sudojess 2015-12-23T18:50:00

Cool music. Camera was a bit stuttery - not sure if it was framerate or something else.

LD36 — Ancient Technology

Light Machine by leialus 2016-08-31T13:07:00

A really cool mechanic! I think the gameplay has some real potential. Didn't have any problem figuring out that I had to get the light to the door--seemed like the first level was enough tutorial, and I'm glad it didn't have text.

The graphic style is interesting. Could use some polish, but I like that direction. The music is a bit lacking.

The collision with the mirrors (I'm assuming they're mirrors?) is a bit wonky and it's annoying that I can't reset levels (I got mirrors stuck on each other and couldn't progress at one point), but overall I really enjoyed the concept. Good job!

LD37 — One room

Galactic Petting Zoo!!! by BoneDaddy 2016-12-13T16:03:00

Sound effects are absolutely hilarious and make this totally worth the play. xD

Video Games Are My Life by Martin Vilcans 2016-12-17T18:57:00

Creepy, haunting, frightening. Controls are a bit stiff but this is going to give me nightmares. >_>

HourGlass Collector by skorpyo 2016-12-13T16:21:00

Tight controls, varying and interesting mechanics. Painfully challenging but in a good Super Meat Boy type way. Cool stuff. :)

Drunk Guy! by bramvanelderen 2016-12-13T15:53:00

Basically unplayable, but I think that's the point, right? XD The procedural generation is nifty but sometimes doesn't quite work into a playable level. Would be nice to have some context of the "you're drunk" bit other than the title in-game. Otherwise, graphics are neat. :)

Elementalist Escape by Sujisan 2016-12-12T23:43:00

Needs work, but good start with the models. :)

This room leads to happiness by Bejk 2016-12-13T17:11:00

Obviously would be better with options like inverting mouse and sensitivity - turning was a bit slow for my tastes. Concept is interesting, audio and graphics are neat (although the gun could use with some texturing - on my display it blends into the floor too much). I like the lobbing of the weapon. A good start. :)

Try, Get fried, Repeat by pagi 2016-12-13T17:18:00

Hook's a bit glitchy sometimes but really nifty concept and I love the "OMG LAVA IS COMING" feel. :D

Mirror by kamranwali 2016-12-13T16:41:00

Audio and graphics work nicely to create a solid atmosphere. Good work. :)

Cute Reign by kawaiineko 2016-12-13T15:45:00

Visual novels aren't really my thing, but the graphics in this are cool and it has an interesting (and rather humorous) world around it.

Nobi Sword by matthewpalaje 2016-12-13T16:59:00

Controls are a bit slippery and it's a bit hard to tell what you can kill with your sword, but otherwise it looks nice and the gameplay is nifty. :)

What's Inside? by iamkraya 2016-12-13T17:50:00

Solid horror experience. A bit short but very well done. :)

Pixel King by TeamTurkeyPosse 2016-12-12T22:32:00

Laughed out loud when I said "no" at the beginning. XD

Cat and Robot by Vadim Ivshin 2016-12-12T12:54:00

Fun stuff! Agree with the others on ability to remove/edit before going and a fast-forward button. Otherwise, nifty little puzzler. Enjoyed the cat sounds. :)

Chrome Room by Palarus 2016-12-16T19:39:00

I too got stuck on 14, could get all but one wall. Really cool concept. Love the simplicity of it, the clean design. Solid challenge ramp. Cool stuff. :)

The Chinese Room by Pierrec 2016-12-17T19:02:00

Really complicated controls but a lot of interesting ideas here. Cool stuff. :)

I REMEMBER NOW by Awpteamoose 2016-12-13T16:34:00

Interesting concept. I think the wavy-ness on the things you can interact with could have been slightly more subtle, but it's well-designed and the art was nifty.

Tempus Machina by Pickens Inc. 2016-12-29T20:19:00

Runs a little fast for me. A larger area and some puzzles would make it super fun, but it's a really interesting concept.

"Whatever..." by OldPeculier 2016-12-12T22:10:00

Couldn't quite figure out what to do, but the graphics and animation are really nice. Would have liked larger text, or the ability to scale the game. Overall pretty nifty. :)

Moore, No! by Ronin748 2016-12-13T16:49:00

Really cool concept, but super complicated from the get-go. With some build-up tutorials or such could be a gem. :)

Ultra Violet Humanoids by seano 2016-12-17T19:15:00

Nice to see LibGDX getting some love in a sea of Unity and GameMaker. xD The fluid animation and style remind me of Another World (Out of This World) for some reason. Cool mood but a bit too slippery.

Loft is in the air by Oddly Shaped Pixels 2016-12-19T15:05:00

Impressive amount of content for a Ludum Dare. Clever use of theme. Tight controls, cool sounds. Ramps up difficulty pretty fast. Good work! :D

A Matter of Time by giordanno92 2016-12-16T23:27:00

Music is wonderfully hyper. Could definitely use more sound effects. I like all the references. Good stuff. :)

You shall not pass! by Givit Game Studios 2016-12-12T22:20:00

Should have some kind of alternative for when you don't have enough money to buy ammo but run out. Would have liked to see the shop as a pop-up in the game rather than its own full screen. Otherwise, really awesome audio work, nifty graphics. Like the arcade feel. :)

Correct Color by gogo199432 2016-12-13T15:39:00

The sludge coming out of the pipe was impressively gross. Interesting experience, although a bit buggy. Would have liked some incidental music, but otherwise cool stuff. :)

Evil Santa by popica23 2016-12-12T22:24:00

Jumping repeatedly while holding the button is a bit of a faux pas, but I like the jump handling and the control response is nice and tight. Interesting concept. Santa is terrifying. XD

My rommate is a psycho by Falak 2016-12-16T23:13:00

Collisions are a bit clingy and I don't quite understand the humor. Good attempt, some reasonable "climb the platforms" concepts in there. Execution is lacking.

Orb Protector by MrJoshuaMcLean 2016-12-13T19:41:00

@BoneDaddy - Thanks! Really the only point of dropping the weapon is to be able to pick up the orbs and carry them elsewhere. Didn't have time to implement multiple planned weapon types, or to make moving the orb particularly desirable. :\

@scorched - You can definitely play with a keyboard, but I'd suggest changing the control settings, which is easily done through the game launcher.

Bad Panda - The ex-panda-ble by Kingblork 2016-12-16T23:22:00

I like the excessive gore and that the bodies stay. (Hmm, that makes me sound a bit sick. >_>) Total insanity. I mean that in the best possible way.

Yetis and Unicorns by bwalter 2016-12-12T22:13:00

Screen turning instantly is a bit disorienting. Maybe could have had a camera rotation delay or something? Graphics are nifty. Liked the old-school sound effects. Very responsive controls.

Really cool concept for a memory game. That time running out sound is terrifying. >_>

Spaceman Spim by Avon 2016-12-13T17:07:00

Graphics are neat. Collisions could be better. I thought it was a bit too easy but the enemies took too long to die.

Pretty nifty. Solid controls. Wish I could invert the mouse (am I the only one left who prefers that?). Otherwise, great concept and solid execution. :)

LD38 — A Small World

Calor by stevenjmiller 2017-05-15T12:34:18Z

Very complicated game which would benefit from a more interactive (player-driven) tutorial. A lot of really interesting concepts. The RPG battle system connecting the hex grids would have been an awesome game on its own - I mostly got confused with the strategy/sim elements. Solid graphics, good sound, lots of strong design ideas but maybe too many in one game. Good work overall. :)

Feed The Anthill by StaNov 2017-05-15T12:44:28Z

Lots of fun, with unique music and sound effects. Graphics are effective for the gameplay, which is nicely balanced. A solid mini-game. Definitely one of my favorites. :)

A Minor Madness by pi_pi3 2017-05-15T11:58:19Z

The hit detection is a little wonky, and it would be nice to have some indication which weapon you have currently "equipped." Graphics are a neat start. Also didn't know love did 3D so that's neat. :)

What more is there to say about this? I really love this game. I've gotten to the boss but didn't beat it, and despite my best efforts still have yet to see the end. Probably my favorite entry. Good work. :)

Giant Steps by Lennart Jansson 2017-05-15T12:38:56Z

Love this. One of my favorites for sure. Could definitely use some music, but otherwise absolutely solid. The tooltips for the controls are a genius touch. I was still stumbling on the controls for a while, but I'd probably get used to it eventually. Good work. :)

LD39 — Running out of Power

The Hard Life of Egg Robots by Noxalus 2017-07-31T22:50:08Z

Cool start. Love the music. The shooting sound effect is a bit punchy. Thought it was pretty hard at first (the collision boxes might be too big on the enemies?) but found that if I stand in the lower-right and face left mashing the shoot button I'm invincible.

Also, love that the batteries drift toward the player for pickup. Good idea.

More Energy! by Kodiqi 2017-08-01T19:37:04Z

Great game and concept! My only gripe is that if you immediately repay your load, then take out and repay loans, you can get to A without advancing time, and then basically start with $100,000 (breaking the game). Otherwise cool stuff. :)

Get Rich Efficiently by CobaltRisen 2017-07-31T22:43:29Z

Cool little strategy/management game. Wasn't sure what the boiler, pipes, etc. do. At one point I placed a thing and the whole screen went gray (not sure why). Could use some tunes, but the sound effects are nice.

Baby Space Saucer by Drew1888 2017-07-31T22:02:06Z

Interesting concept with the being a baby bit. Loved the "mother" sound effects. Having the elements in two separate areas was a bit frustrating, would be better if you could access everything at once. Got really hard once there were five things to do. Overall, pretty neat.

Cool. Really hard. Would like to invert the mouse. :D

Soulviver by Wabble 2017-07-31T22:17:26Z

Love the premise. Platforming is pretty solid, and the graphics are neat. Love the sound effects. Music was a bit quiet - kinda expected in-your-face chiptunes to match the art style.

Was a little bit too hard for me. Got stuck on the third level. After picking up the sword, I couldn't get any further because it stopped me swinging it too fast.

Overall, pretty good stuff.

Mine Rocket (TD/RTS) by Ashment 2017-08-01T16:21:27Z

Graphics and music are great. Really loved the RTS / tower defense hybrid.

I think if the connections stayed after you set them, and only changed when you change them, the game would be much better. It's a lot to manage, having to set the connections over and over again.

I love the concept of connecting things to maintain the power levels, though. Good work! :)

LD42 — Running out of space

Backpack packer by dollarone 2018-09-04T13:19:38Z

Could definitely have a few extra levels to start with extra space, and then have this as the last level where you're required to use every single cell. Definitely works, and it's fun in a Tetris sort of "fit everything together" way - but needs a little push for more gamification. :)

Really neat game. Have to check out the Android version, because I can imagine it would be easier with my finger than with the mouse. Some of the words are a bit ambiguous (Roy is in Super Smash Bros, so technically a video game thing?) but that's often a problem in these word-based games. Otherwise, loved it!

Pineapple Run by yscik 2018-08-16T13:27:11Z

Love the acid tunes and the design of the little dude with he pineapple. The up/down mechanic is great, especially having different sounds to alert the player of what's changed. I think the balance of generating up/down blocks could be tweaked a bit to account for the current state of the game and balanced a bit more, but overall a solid runner. Mind Space by ysty 2018-08-16T13:32:42Z

The concept is great - love the idea of a cassette tape for our memories. The animation of yanking it out of the brain is quite good, although a bit out of touch with the more somber mood the game seems to be aiming for. The core mechanic of balancing numbers felt a bit dull (maybe I'm just an emotionless robot?) and it was difficult to judge good vs bad decisions.

But clearly everyone else liked it so that's just my two cents. XD

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Sorry I've been slow to respond. Was silly enough to jump on another jam almost right after this thing ended. >_>

@wrenpirate You're probably looking for USE [thing] ON [person]. I think GIVE [thing] TO [person] works too? Don't remember.

@garris and @keppu Agreed on the ascend/descend! I'm always talking about how the stairs ascend and descend, so I should let the player match that language.

@endurion The theme was as simple as inventory limitation. Kind of ignored the theme for this one. XD

@ratherjolly If you're interested in writing interactive fiction, Inform 7 is a great system. You write all the stuff in natural language. Something like this is actual working code: "The garden is a room. A container called the bag is here. Inside the bag is a pile of dirt."

@agecaf Yeah, the weight limit was a bit tacky, but I needed *something* for the theme. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: More options for verbs is of course a must. I covered GRIND in the help text, probably should have also covered PICK. Love the idea of highlighting important items. That whole puzzle was a trick to figure out between making it too obvious and not obvious enough. Such is the pain of text adventures.

Thanks again everyone!

Space Compact by garris 2018-08-18T17:07:37Z

I think the graphics could have been a bit larger (especially when you go inside the space stations). Controls are solid, and I love that you show the lines to the space stations, but it would be nice to have some idea of how far they are - either by resizing the lines or showing the distance with the number. The ship really goes once it gets going so I overshot the stations almost every time.

Also, it doesn't seem to handle it well if you pick up from multiple stations without dropping off.

I like the concept, and as I said, the Asteroids-style controls work really well.

This is a super cool concept and very polished execution, like a 3D Tetris with a house theme. However, the controls are super complicated and would get confusing on occasion. Might need to be streamlined for a mobile target (which is what it feels like). On the other hand, might be easier to get to grips with the controls on a gamepad.

The game is desperately in need of audio to support the awesome graphics. Would love to have some DOS-era MIDI tunes in there, and those blippy fireball noises like CA. It's super small and super short but I would definitely play a larger, more finished version. :)

But seriously, the whole thing is impressive. Although, could use a warning for the flashing lights bit. XD

Love the backdrop and character art, plus the music fits perfectly. The controls are nice and I like that your "followers" move with you left and right, but I wish they didn't do that weird random-feeling orbital thing where they sometimes wrap too far and miss your target.

Love the anti-Metroidvania mechanic. Kind of wished I could see an overview of the levels to make a more educated choice, but only one or two tries through each was enough to figure it out.

I showed my fiancee the game and her reaction was O_O SO PRETTY

Love this game! Needs a timer for speedrun attempts and fastest times board. ;)

Got stuck on the second to last level, but I'm glad it amped up the challenge. Maybe could have been a smoother curve up to that point, though.

This was super fun. The physics really make it stand out. Not sure if the self-deprecating messages between levels are meant to be funny - if they are, they should be maybe a bit more polished. If not, maybe they're not necessary.

Great work, although I did eventually get stuck. XD

Your God Demands... by daruudaruu 2018-12-06T14:48:06Z

This was a nice little game. Really glad it had native gamepad support. Felt very tight and polished, looked classically retro, and was easy to understand.

Could be expanded with multiple levels where you slowly add more types of characters to add to the chaos, and I wish it supported d-pad out of the box, but luckily I was able to remap with DS4. :)

I think there needs to be a bit more penalty for sacrificing prisoners, and you should be able to pick up the fruits by simply touching them, but the platforming is very well made and I enjoyed the fruit graphics (they made me hungry!)

This was super cool. Love the art style, as described in my chat: "If Edward McMillen did World of Goo."

Somehow needs to make the button holding more clear. Maybe require the hold before releasing? After learning about the time slow, I never used the click again.

Should also say the level number in the HUD and maybe have a level select (so I can leave and come back) but those are minor quibbles.

Tainted Blade: The Dungeon Escape by Lawrence 2018-12-05T05:49:24Z

Loved the feel of this game. Despite the simple graphics, the stealth was solid. Could easily see this expanded into a story-heavy Thief type experience. The "soul as magic" mechanic is great.

One change I'd suggest is making the player kill more forgiving/fluid so you can react to an oncoming guard without ending up dead. There were a few times I felt the magic should have killed them before they could run me through.

But otherwise... I can't get enough of that dagger. XD

Blob Time by sketchycode 2018-12-06T16:16:44Z

Really interesting mechanic with having to minimize steps/jumps. The sliding on previous slime bits made some parts kind of frustrating, and it was hard to get used to the constantly changing speed of the character (though maybe that's a good thing?).

The last level took a bit of an extra think but it was probably fine. You only introduced one mechanic per level, and there were neat variations in environment which I appreciated.

Definitely needs gamepad support. :)

The premise for this is hilarious. I think it would be a bit more dynamic if the other characters moved around, and would stop it from being a chore of heading back and forth to them, but it was super hilarious firing them out of the canons.

Main thing is, let me invert the mouse y-axis. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Love the graphics and audio, especially the sound design of the intro. Really set a perfect mood.

I think the traps could be a little more obvious and the levels could be a little less stingy with items. Maybe the game could count how many items/people you use in the level and set some "par" to give you a reward for optimizing it.

Otherwise, it's a neat use of the theme for sure.

I had fun with this, although I was a bit overwhelmed initially with the character screen. Maybe showing one person at a time would make it less daunting. Introducing one character at a time could work, but then it messes up the mechanic of using people as a resource, so I dunno how you could rectify that.

I think the highlight color should have bright and the default dim for selection text, and the choices could have been more varied/interesting, but you certainly nailed the vibe of the characters, and I loved how the effect followed the mouse.

Maybe consider a different color for the red part to pop out of the background more.

Thanks for playing everyone!

@lubaka Glad you were able to get the aiming system down eventually. Making that a bit more friendly/intuitive is top on the post-jam to do list.

@vimlark Thanks for pointing that out - definitely have to add the camera angle buttons to the controls (added on this page for now).

@dannn I'm not familiar with flight simulators so I'll have to look into that as a possibility. Thanks!

@daspanjo I can't believe you played that far haha. 1) The people get killed when the total passengers (including you) is more than the remaining food (you run out of food and then kill them to have enough). Guess I'll need to make that more clear. 2) That's a good point - will have to revisit the audio. 3) Oops! Left in a debug thing. Thanks for playing!

LD49 — Unstable

Billy the Nerd in: Computer Trouble by O8PC 2021-10-04T20:29:16Z

Good: Love the visual style. Reminds me of old-school indie computer games. Jump feels great. Solid level progression and tutorializing. Love the level transition.

Less good: Would be nice to see the controls in a single page, not sure why they show up one at a time. Same deal with the credits. Dust and explosions are neat, but take forever to animate and disappear. Are they not time-bound? Jump and shoot sounds a bit too loud, especially with multiple shots.

Not sure: Forward speed increases while jumping. Is this intentional for bunny hop speedrunning?

Overall a neat little platforming experience with a fun computer style. Good work!

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Speed Phoning by TimBeaudet 2018-04-28T14:49:54Z

I am awful at those slidey puzzle things, so this was harder for me than the average person. Probably.

For the sound design, I'd only say "Speed up!" once when the speed has dropped too low. That way, it's not constantly repeating. But I love that sound effect, so toss me the wav and I'll make the dance remix!

Would be nice if the car couldn't keep going endlessly in the grass. Ended up far out in limbo without any way to get back.

Love the idea of having to do a phone game while driving, though. And it's a working compo game! So good work on that. :)

Torn by IgorsGames 2018-04-28T15:16:48Z

I only realized this was a cooperative game because you told me, unless you just have that as a theoretical option? I think it works better in co-op than it does as a solo player. Non-parallel multiplayer play is fascinating.

The music is fantastic, the art is awesome, the controls are good. You know you need to fix the tree clipping issue. XD

A title screen, or at least "press a key to begin" would be a great addition, because suddenly leaping into a game that actively tries to kill you is problematic.

Other than that, though, great work!

Heart-Type by ysty 2018-04-28T15:50:40Z

The shapes of the words made it super awkward to avoid the projectiles, but it wasn't frustratingly difficult. Would be neat to have more bonuses for typing stupidly fast. Seemed I was getting the same top-level movement speed even when I slowed my typing a bit.

Love the concept. Really enjoyed the game!

Crops in Space by mrjoshuamclean 2018-04-26T14:59:04Z

Thanks to everyone for the feedback! We really appreciate it.

@ZaneDD Another tester also pointed out that bug. Hopefully we'll get it patched in the next version. :)

@Flameo326 We'll look into ways to make the scrolling background less nauseating. Sometimes if you talk to an officer and say "Nevermind" it throws an exception. This is one of those hard-to-pin down bugs that I'll try to squash soon. As for more crew interactions, that was the last thing on the table when we ran out of time. We'll start to flesh out the "novel" part of the VN experience in future versions.

@Yirggzmb Shields recharge faster and crops grow faster if the stations are manned, and the engine can get to Level 3 only if the station is manned. It's definitely subtle. We'll try to make it more apparent in the next version, or at the very least include a guide!

@notnullnotvoid Great idea on ramping up the complexity. We'll try to make it build step by step in a future version to avoid confusion.

@TheMonsterFromTheDeep We were tweaking the balance to the very end, so there will definitely be changes to fix up this gaping hole in the design soon. XD

@Rocktavious Hey, you caught onto my inspiration! The initial concept was "FTL as VN meets Harvest Moon." :D

Crops in Space by mrjoshuamclean 2018-04-27T16:52:30Z

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. We really appreciate it. ^.^

@Articulated9 I love Red Dwarf! Smegging brilliant show. It'll definitely be an inspiration going forward... maybe there will be a toaster on board? :P

@Autumnotopia D'oh! That's totally my bad. We did a practice game beforehand and I copied over the code for naming, but forgot to copy over the prompt text that specified you're of the male variety. Will definitely make that more obvious in future versions. Or better yet, allow you to select your gender!

@Shivur Agreed. That was a feature we had to cut for time, but you will definitely have the option to hire (and possibly re-hire) crew in a future version.

@ndry That is indeed an issue. They both show up in the "tutorial" bit and the ending regardless of who's left on the ship. Thanks for pointing out the oversight. Also, Alpha Centauri is the only real one - the rest of them were made up. Just thought the familiar name would be a good way to say "Hey, you're almost home!" ;D

@theamazingb Great idea! We absolutely need to flesh out the crops side of things, and we have plans to do so soon. And I'll do my best to play, rate, and comment on all the games from people who give feedback!

Crops in Space by mrjoshuamclean 2018-04-28T02:09:04Z

@Mektidas We had a placeholder itch.io page set up to make it easier to publish the game when we finished. This is pretty common practice. >_>

@bentglasstube Thanks for the feedback! We'll definitely look into ways to rebalance the combat. The other choices (waiting for help and negotiating) aren't currently implemented, so having those actually working should help provide more options. :)

Typistry by mahalis 2018-04-28T15:14:32Z

For first-person games, it's great to have options for inverting the y-axis (and possibly the x-axis) and sensitivity adjustments for both axes. Mouses (and people) can vary wildly. XD

Would be nice to have colored the third word differently or marked it as special otherwise, to instantly inform the player that they can do the two top words OR the third word to shoot.

Love the typewriter gun. Looks fantastic.

The other ideas you have listed - especially scores and healing - will definitely round this out. Nice job overall. :)

Nubes Pila by IDidGame 2018-04-28T15:10:12Z

I'm just now realizing, having looked at the gif for more than two seconds, you can move up and down. XD

Took me a while to figure out, but I like the balance of the charging vs. smacking the ball back. Definitely a fan of Breakout style games so this is right up my alley. Enemies could have moved a bit faster, or had different patterns. Maybe later levels have different enemy patterns? Wasn't able to get past the first one.

My one complaint is that the ball can get stuck going horizontally and never get back down to the paddle.

But it's fun enough that I'mma go back and see what else it has to offer. Good work!

Greg Island by LJFMX 2018-04-28T15:12:06Z

Emo Greg is clearly the ideal selection.

The island needs invisible walls or a death plane in the water so you don't get stuck down there. Always good to assume the worst from the player, which is usually how I play. :P

The walking simulator / dating sim is a pretty compatible pair of things, since they're both styles of adventure games. I didn't have to go far to satisfy Emo Greg but maybe the other guys make me walk farther? Would have been nice to explore the island a bit more. Y'know, more "walking" in the "walking simulator."

The graphical style was neat, though, and the game worked as intended. :)

Twin Stick Runner by utoxin 2018-04-28T15:27:39Z

Had another playthrough now that I understand I have to HOLD the trigger AND the right stick to do the primary fire. Definitely would be better with the right stick just doing it automatically.

The game is super easy, and it's hard to tell where the enemies are because they're usually offscreen. I think zooming out further would be great, as well as having enemies more intent on getting to you, maybe even shooting bullets of their own.

The laser sound is cool, but it's a bit rough hearing it constantly repeating while I fire the main gun.

Combining these two is an interesting concept, and I think it could work with some tweaks and additions. Maybe power ups, or an upgradeable ship, etc.

Otherwise, a solid start to an "infinite shmup" game. :)

Axe and Roses by Hippunk 2018-04-28T15:42:05Z

The music, animated drink-chugging, and humor absolutely make this game.

Definitely a lot of text to get through, but that's in the typical vein of the VN/dating-sim genre. Would have liked a few more choices personally, but that's just my taste. I'm glad there were choices and an end result.

The font isn't great because the I sometimes looks like a J and it's hard to read quickly. Could maybe be a bit larger, too. Also, there are loads of grammatical and spelling errors, but since it's not in your first language, that's forgivable. :)

Gonna go back and try to woo that rock now...

Recipe for Disaster by dragonslumber 2018-04-28T15:07:16Z

The musical selection is on point. Game theme is everything. XD

You already know the sluggishnes etc. yada yada. I expected something a bit more MicroMachines-ish.

I think the graphics could do with being slightly less orange overall. The feeling of being in an oven is there, but some color variation would be more interesting.

Overall it was a pretty fun concept, and a good use of the theme!
