very nice wave animations when dying. I didn't figure out how the double-jump worked, but the quality of the controls and their responses is clearly visible in this product.

jk5000 2019-04-29 06:55

A very cute and fun little puzzle/platform game. The controls is overall pretty good. I love both the music and the graphics. The use of the theme was really interesting, and coins/life system make this a very fun little game. Well done.

abitscared 2019-04-29 07:37

Love the music, using coins/lives to move around the stages is a really cool idea. Good job!

dmdmdmdm 2019-04-29 08:46

I enjoyed this a lot! It was very challenging but I managed to complete it (felt very good seeing that final bye-level after many many attempts on some of the levels).

I really like how the mechanic worked, and it feels like a very polished game.

shawn-moore 2019-04-29 17:50

Thank you all for the nice comments!!

@tero-pulkkinen sorry about the confusion with double jump. I see now that the instructions were unclear! You have to already be in the air when you hold up and press jump. I'll add a little demo video once I get some sleep :D

boltkey 2019-04-29 19:46

Really like it! Nice interpretation of the theme!

Why do I have to hold up to double jump, but don't have to hold anything for walljump? It is inconsistent, and I think the up arrow rule is just redundant.

I am not sure about the badges at the end of the levels. First, I have no idea what are they awarded for (after completing the whole game), and they don't really make sense if you cannot quickly switch between levels and see which badges you have in which levels (same for the level times). I have no idea how many badges have I missed, and I really don't want to play through all the levels just to get to a level where I missed a badge.

With the badges, it feels like I didn't really finish the game, and it would be super tedious to try and get them all.

shawn-moore 2019-04-29 20:07

Hi @boltkey, thank you for the detailed and honest criticism :) I'm glad you liked the game!

I could see getting rid of holding up to do a double jump. Since you do have to be holding left or right to do a walljump, so every case should be unambiguous.

For the badges, I did intend to have a main menu with a level select, best times, and badge descriptions,, but I had to cut it for lack of time. :( That was the one feature I really regret not being able to add!

andreadbx 2019-04-29 20:36

Controls are a bit weird at first, i expected to double jump just by hitting jump while in air, don't get why i have to press the up button first, as @boltkey said yeh, the badges are confusing too, they are not explained :( for the rest, games plays nice, i like the gravity and the movement of the character, a little thing: if possible have a download link if you want people to stream your game, sadly obs not support hardware acceleration on chrome so i was able to stream your game but with very bad performance, good work overall :D

adam-clayden 2019-04-29 21:17

Good game but that double jump level was really hard. Nice coin mechanic though and the shockwave effect was cool

potatolain 2019-04-30 06:28

Fantastic entry!

I really liked a lot about this game - I actually didn't have much trouble with the controls personally. They felt just intuitive enough. The game was also the perfect length/difficulty for one of these jams. (Also the final level was a nice touch!)

I try to always give constructive criticism, but nothing really stuck out enough to mention. Well done!

leinades 2019-04-30 07:08

I wasn't really sure what was going on, I kept dying on level 1 for reasons unknown. I also didn't get how the scores work, and the jumping is a bit awkward.

dodormeur 2019-04-30 07:35

I feel like the music is a bit out of place, I felt more like I was in a church than playing a plateformer ^^ The idea and the game is nice, but i feel like you could go more in-depth with it, right now it is a (good) plateformer where you can double jump once when you got an item; maybe try adding other coins with different power, or other obstacles/elements (like a coin magnet, piggybank for storing coins for later use, etc.) and you could have a really cool game :)

kp-cftsz 2019-04-30 08:15

I dunno if there's a name for this sticky platformer genre but I love it

slimenian 2019-04-30 08:35

I like the design, a nice well tought game, it reminded me alot of celeste which i really love! Keep it up

henanboy 2019-04-30 10:14

This was definitely a unique entry. Very fun and challenging. Well done!

nexusviper 2019-04-30 13:58

Game is nice but only thing which i didn't liked is the quality of jump. i was stuck in the second level. jumping height is quite low and i was unable to jump over the wall even with double jump. Sound is good and art is also good. Matching with the theme but its not something very innovative. Maybe you could add some puzzles instead of making it difficult. anyways it was a good experience. All the best :)

samuli 2019-04-30 20:55

Fun little game. Graphics were really barebones, but death effect was nice. Controls weren't as responsive as I'd like. Still perfectly playable.

andidebob 2019-05-02 06:22

A really cool interpretation of the theme and I could really see how this game could turn into something super fun with a bit of polish. Maybe other coins with different effects etc.

But I have to give you huge props for how good the platforming feels. That can not have been easy to do in the time given! Very well done!

ursagames 2019-05-02 06:30

Thank you for submitting your game to be played on my stream!

Once the stream is finished you can find the video here: https://www.twitch.tv/ursagames/videos If you want to know when it was played you can find your game in the queue here: https://tinyurl.com/y5rdokvp

shunaky 2019-05-03 04:50

Incredible game, very polished and fun. As I told you on the stream, there is that purple guy that you probably want to fix it.

Congratulations on the game ^^

afroant 2019-05-03 14:13

Nice implementation of the theme. I really felt like *my* life *is* currency, ya know? :P Congrats on including the achievements. If only the player knew what they were for! Controls felt really good. Almost felt like I was playing Super Meat Boy. The amount of levels was impressive. Oh, and it's a compo game!! Overall, great job!

alexrose 2019-05-04 14:46

Figured out that double jump glitch, woop woop! It was pretty fun, I would've preferred if my double jump had more horizontal velocity, but you properly designed the game around the velocity you chose. Nice shaders. Good use of theme. Nice job!

shawn-moore 2019-05-04 18:08

@alexrose I watched your platforming physics talk and feel inspired to make the physics be force-based (among other things!), using this game as a playground. Thanks!

vulpineblazeyt 2019-05-05 00:06

This game was badass. I'm over here wondering how to buy this on my phone. Lemme get 10 jump coins for $0.99. Sadly, I have no constructive feedback, this game was simply awesome.

kimily 2019-05-05 03:16

This game was extremely well-polished and I really enjoyed the coin jump mechanic! (although I like jumping a lot so I killed myself a lot just cuz I like jumping) The art was very clear and intuitive, there were no conflicting visual design choices. The sound effects were satisfying and none of them disturbed me while playing. I usually don't play platforming games (and I suck at them) but this game made me feel really good while playing it. It made me feel really accomplished, I love all the badges and achievements for each level. Overall, amazing! One of the few games I gave a 5/5 :)

jjjjason 2019-05-06 04:01

That was a lot of fun! I will admit, I was a little thrown off by the rather cutesy art style but I was proven wrong by the rather tight controls and well-done mechanics :). Took a bit of time, but I managed to get to the end. Lot of levels for a Ludum Dare game, and none of them felt shoe-horned, so good work on that.

Also great job on the music, I think the midi tunes work very well with the art style, and don't get fatiguing as you hear them again and again as you die again and again...and again. With that, everything really is cohesive. Even the level names exhibit the same jovial tone. Lot of polish for a compo game, incredible work in that regard.

Interesting choice though I think is the air inertia--once you slow you down midair, you lose pretty much all air control and just fall like a rock. Can you talk as to why you designed it that way?

Also, I'd love for you to talk about your experience with Phaser! I've been looking for some sort of JS-based game engine as of recent, and Phaser seems to be the most popular.

shawn-moore 2019-05-06 04:05

@jjjjason thanks for the kind review! Reducing your mobility on double jump was an intentional choice to better differentiate double jumps (high y-velocity, low x-velocity) from wall jumps (high x-velocity, low y-velocity). If the jumps were more similar, then it wouldn't really be a meaningful choice which one to use, and so there wouldn't be much point to having both. :)

jjjjason 2019-05-06 04:08

@shawn-moore That's reasonable. Happy to see it was a conscious choice, further contributes to how rather high-designed this unassuming game was.

shawn-moore 2019-05-06 04:10

@jjjjason Phaser is quite good! I used it previous LD and will next time too :D It offers all the primitives I want: both simple and complex physics engines, animation with custom easings, particle effects, shaders. Lots of *playable* examples at https://labs.phaser.io (which is super important).

The only gripe I have with it is that, although the documentation is comprehensive, it is not well organized. For example if you want to find all the properties you can animate, or a list of events that get emitted from some subsystem like physics or audio, you might have to troll through several different documents and it rarely feels satisfying.

davidus 2019-05-06 06:28

Nice game! I had a good time playing it! Good job!

freedompotatoes 2019-05-06 07:17

Very fun game! I loved the wall jump levels, especially Acrobatics. I might have enjoyed it if spikes were an instant kill, as some levels I was able to beat by (accidentally) falling on the spikes and using the invulnerability frames to run/jump to the exit which felt a bit cheap. Perhaps there is another workaround that could keep spikes from being frustrating while still making them a bit more punishing.

shawn-moore 2019-05-06 07:23

@freedompotatoes play the game however makes you happiest :) :) using invulnerability like you describe was intentional, but if I had more time, I would have polished the level design more to support more optional challenges for experts

ace17 2019-05-06 10:21

What's up with the music? Did you use a compilation of 'game over' songs? It's sooo depressing!

Other than that, the gameplay is solid and simple, and the SFX are snappy. The difficulty is rather well balanced. In one word: it's fun! :D

jm-studio 2019-05-06 10:34

Well done a lot for this ! i had lot of fun playing to it :) Very good mechanics !

miu 2019-05-06 12:15

Nice game, I like the comment at the end of levels :)
