LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Night's End by glimaleite 2018-12-05T13:02:02Z

My favorite compo entry so far. Solid graphics, story and the shooting mechanics and feedback feel great. I do have two critiques if I may: 1 - The gameplay is maybe not as closely linked with the theme as it should be. 2 - The music doesn't fit with the setting very well. I understand everything is done by yourself and you need to use the tools you have at hand, but maybe the guitar riff could draw some inspiration from folk music that is more typical to the setting/time period (I'm guessing 1300s-1600s?). Like maybe some mandolin type of music (https://youtu.be/pBKFlckrpmU). Other than those two critiques I'm just blown away by the game and how you managed to pull it off in such a sort amount of time. Tons of kudos!

Very innovative and a great match for the theme :)

Sacrifice in Space by Marc Grabow 2018-12-04T09:59:00Z

This Lemmings-like is very innovative and a perfect fit for the theme. It's great that you took the theme and made it central to the gameplay itself instead of just the theme. Good stuff!

Really nice drawings and mood. The smooth jazz piano fits perfectly :) I agree with the comment above that the theme doesn't feel central to the gameplay, but overall a reeeeaally solid entry! Congrats!

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you took the reference to The Cube. And grats on making it through. Reducing randomness and giving the player more creative ways of avoiding traps is definitely something we would like to push for if we were to continue working on the game.

I'm glad you appreciated the dark humour :) Personally I agree that it's a bit too random and I would love to give the player more ways of determining a safe-ish route, but @mgns now thinks it's too easy and wants to up the difficulty. There are (perhaps too subtle) hints on where the exit should be and how you can choose the safest route, and I guess he has mastered them. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks so much for playing! Yep, I was watching your stream and we haven't lagged that bad during any of the tests. Very valuable feedback though and something we will look into:)

Hi @lereveur and thanks for the useful feedback! To be quite honest, we simply didn't plan things well enough, ran out of time and didn't have time to incorporate all the mechanics we wanted to. Each character should have various traits that differ from items, like there might be a savant who always knows where the exit is, or someone with great intuition who can tell how many traps are in adjacent rooms (Like minesweeper). Not only would that make it more fair, giving the players more ways of avoiding traps, but would also make the choice of who to sacrifice and who to keep much more interesting. We are discussing whether we want to actually make this into a game (I think the idea has potential for a great roguelite), and if so we will definitely make it more fair :) Thanks again!

@coleslaughter Thanks for the feedback! Yep, as I mentioned in a previous comment we didn't plan well enough to incorporate everything we wanted to. But hopefully we'll finish it someday!

@bartosz Thanks for the kind words!! For the graphics I was really inspired by early semi-3D games like GTA1 and 2, various PS1 games and early 3D PC-titles. The atmosphere is going for B-movie pulp. Glad you liked it:)

@mza Which browser are you currently using? We have tested it on Chrome, Firefox and Safari - Firefox being the most successful. Safari doesn't like the game at all but if you're in Safari you should get an error message.

Congrats on the game! The character model and animation is really nice and fluid. There's a moody atmosphere to the whole thing that fits the gameplay nicely. Unfortunately I had to play it without sound in a browser because there isn't a mac version. I guess my critique would be that it is a bit TOO similar to Papers, Please, but without the moral dilemmas that Papers, Please present. The "children are bad" criteria is very interesting, as it goes against what people are usually taught to think. Solid entry though, good job!

Great stuff! Punching those little shits felt really satisfying. The mood is spot on, with the music and graphics contrasting but strengthening each other as a result. You have these Steamboat Willie-esque elves scored by an industrial, dystopic soundtrack. Brilliant. I'd maybe like the days to fly by a little faster but overall a fantastic entry to the compo!
