LD42 — Running out of space

Cat Lady Simulator by samh 2018-08-14T17:15:59Z

Charming graphics and music, really liked the retro style. Interesting way to approach the theme, I definitely felt I was running out of space when all the cats were walking around the room, either hungry or thirsty.

The Enter key to pause confused me at first, and it was a bit difficult to place the food in the bowls (I had to be in a very specific position to do it), but overall I liked the idea.

Loved the art style. The character feels great to control while moving and jumping, but I had some trouble using the dash. The hardest part for me was right after the third portal, but I managed to get better at it through some trial and error.

I liked the sound effects in the fixed version but unfortunately I had to rate it a bit lower because the fix was submitted later. Overall, a very enjoyable entry.

The gameplay is very nice and responsive, I liked the variety of enemy types and you approached the theme in a unique way. The sound effects and pixel art were also pretty good.

I think the rotating traps should maybe also damage the enemies. It would add another layer of depth and would be useful in later levels.

I would also prefer it if you chose how enemies will get stronger instead of how you will get weaker, it would basically be the same system but I think it would feel better as a player. To make it fit the story, instead of your upgrades, you could have magic scrolls that were weakening the enemies, for example, and these would be replaced by your trophies.

Overall though, this was a really fun and solid entry. Great job!

@dasun Yeah, I feel you on the time constraints, I struggled with it aswell, this being my first game jam. You managed to create a great game though, good luck on your new project!

Unique sort of patchwork / handcrafted aesthetic. I really liked the sound effects, they fit the game's bizarre setting very well.

As for the gameplay, I liked the different enemy types, especially the red one since it makes you stay focused on timing the jumps and shots just right. I still haven't managed to reach the third planet, but with some practice I can see myself managing it.

I had some trouble finding my character on screen after I died. I found the A / D keys to be more intuitive to move about, since the gravity takes a bit to get used to.

In general, it's an innovative and very unique entry.

Samuel's Escape by PacoTheLegend 2018-08-14T16:52:28Z

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

@samuel-kriman I agree on the music, I only started searching for one a few hours before the deadline and it was one of the things I feel like I could have definitely improved. About the cutting off, that was probably caused by monitor resolution. I'm still figuring out how to get my games to scale properly to different resolutions.
