Dedicated Dab button. Masterpiece.

I'm gettin' some Jet Set Radio vibes from this...I like it! Kinda wish the physics worked the way I'd want them to, but that stuff is REALLY tough to get down, even outside of a game jam setting, so what you have here is still pretty impressive.

The map was a tad hard to navigate on account of there being only so many unique textures to mark the locales, but I still had a pretty decent time just skating around and dabbing on rails. :)

The game looks, feels and sounds really great! In many ways it feels like a really cool Nintendo 64 game (and I mean that in the best way possible), specially the music. Grinding worked great, and I have now dabbed for the first time, haha.

Is it weird that I actually really liked the look of "Potato" mode :D ?

Super awesome entry!

Hello @karai17! :) This game is refreshing, I really like the feel of it! Potato mode looks awesome, I like it much better than the normal mode. Animations in 3D is especially impressive knowing that there's Love2D behind the scenes... :) Thank you guys for creating this! I'd like to see a third iteration.

mrjoshuamclean 2018-12-11 23:33

Definitely impressed with your engine. Could use a touch more guidance and (as you pointed out) a little more air control, but it felt like rollerblading and that was fun. Can imagine extra modes like racing etc. as well. :)

Here's my play: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/345392409?t=44m58s

Hey, you could market your game a little bit to receive more ratings!

papaver 2018-12-23 16:30

Nice work! I enjoyed skating around. Cool music!

riyroo 2018-12-23 16:58

I liked this game I thought it was pretty easy to play which was nice and you guys made a fun map with lots of places to explore. I got a win from collecting coins but I knew that it wasn't all of the coins so I got a little confused, but I like that it let me keep playing without a time constraint at that point, so I could now go get all the coins. I didn't really understand why you could dab? I was hoping I would get points or something idk, but I really liked this game overall, I thought it was fun and easy to play!

holo 2018-12-23 17:19

@papaver thanks!

@riyroo thanks! we were going to have a scene that tied it together at the start and once you got enough coins, but... had to sacrifice it for time. the sole reason you can dab is that I didn't have enough time to animate more/other tricks. tricks were supposed to help you go faster, but that ended up not happening... it felt like something was missing when the button was removed, though.

riyroo 2018-12-23 17:23

@holo haha that's great, one day you can do all that, I think it would be super fun. I'm glad you kept it in anyways, I think it's better you all ended up with a complete playable game without any huge bugs versus one that maybe wasn't as complete but had more tricks

hdugmag 2018-12-23 19:34

Love the cool vibe, graphics, and music, and it was really satisfying to just roam around the map, but I'm not sure whether the theme was implemented or not. But other than that, very nice!

birdwards 2018-12-24 08:12

Good work! It was fun to just explore all the nooks and crannies of the map- I wish there was an easier way to tell if I'd seen it all. For that reason, I think it was a good decision to not require all of the coins to win.

nander 2018-12-24 10:04

Fun game, old-school aesthetic. I don't see the link with the theme. Control-wise it's surprisingly playable, although it does feel a bit like those skateboarding games from the 90s :).

g12345 2018-12-24 15:34

Oh, yes, there's this of the Jet Set Radio feeling there (even though I haven't actually played that myself).

Looks and plays great. The only thing is that it's very hard to get some of those coins in mid-air.

But I didn't play this game for that anyway, more like just exploring the large area instead.

It's fun.

pickens-inc 2018-12-24 17:59

This reminded me so much of Jet Set Radio! From the art style to the zany PS1-like music. It's a shame you didn't get to finish it and would love to see it completed into a game! Skating around was really satisfying, despite the lack of sound, the Potato mode looked gorgeous and I kept it on there willingly.

The music was perfect, the protagonist was adorable. The animation for fast skating was a tad peculiar, I think it should have been a little wider in stance, especially with the arms. Regardless, I thought the whole thing was super cute, and would enjoy seeing it completed and polished further.

pickens-inc 2018-12-25 01:49

Also, please release the music separately! It's been stuck in my head for a few hours now :)

holo 2018-12-25 10:16

@pickens-inc thanks a bunch! dark secret: you can rename the exe or love to .zip and extract the game data (or just open it as-is with anything that can read a zip), check assets/bgm for the music and listen all you like.

I wanted to fix that animation up, but as is tradition with LD games, we ran out of time to do it.

@nander the link to the theme... was sacrificed for time ;)

commanderstitch 2018-12-29 02:31

Nice little entry you got here. Gives me a big tony hawk pro skater vib. Love the large expansive level. Needed more ways to quickly get around and it'd be a real gem to enjoy. :-) Music was nice too. :D

sevkron 2018-12-30 20:52

It looks like you should develop this idea further outside of the context of the game jam. The game is fun but has nothing to do with the theme which is a shame. The sound design work is well done, especially for this type of game. A 3D game like this is pretty ambitious. The dab button +1.

drevilbrain 2018-12-30 22:30

Jet Set Radio? Always appreciated. Movement feels amazing. Would love to see this get fleshed out into something complete.

I'm curious as to how you made the potato quality filter though. It's definitely the kind of aesthetic I want to experiment with.

holo 2018-12-31 02:38

@drevilbrain thanks! the potato filter is done by rendering at 0.25x resolution and adding some weak [8x8 dithering](https://github.com/hughsk/glsl-dither/blob/master/8x8.glsl). low res hdr render -> post process tonemap + vignette + glow + dither to RGB565 output (normal quality output is RGB10A2).
