The art could be better (mostly due to poor choice in color).

Really awkward controls at least for me.

Nice audio and graphics. Keyboard controls feel clumsy.

Concept well thought but gameplay was a bit hard to master.
Using the "R" to reload was a bit uncomfortable regarding the disposition of the other keys to use.

And the crossbow was lacking a bit of power in my opinion.

The music was really nice :)

That background tile needed to not have light speckles like that!

Aside from that I didn't feel like there was a real punishment to letting your orbs go. You can camp out in a valley (valleys are easier to defend than hills!) and basically just sit there with 1 or 2 orbs for forever.

I think instead of awarding a bonus for orbs, you should have implemented a punishment for letting orbs go. That would have helped keep the game more dynamic, and would have forced me to care about all orbs. Overall though, I enjoyed playing the game and played for more waves than I expected to!

Controls felt fine on xbox controller at least. Would have been easier on the eyes without the background. Quite fun

This reminds me of a castlevania game. The controls are tough because by the way the shooting mechanics worked you had to stretch your pinky finger to shoot and then stretch your index finger to reload. I thought it made it more about strategy and making sure you don't miss or you pretty much lose.

nikitapash 2016-12-13 16:42

Yeah! retro!

uliana-galich 2016-12-13 16:53

Funny game and overall i can say that is a nice game

The controls are a bit weird. Sure "R" is commonly used for reload, but combined with left shift as the only two buttons for the left hand? I would've given the character the ability to aim up and down with the mouse and put the weapon control on mouse buttons; that way I would use both hands effectively.

It looks ok though and the music isn't that bad either.

I LOVED the presentation (although it does get annoying having to wait through it). Made it Wave 5. Is there any point in being able to drop your weapon?

scorched 2016-12-13 18:32

Like the music and the idea of mixing platformer plus CTF/Ripoff. So there's no way to actually play with the keyboard?

kamranwali 2016-12-13 18:38

The game was fun to play! The visuals and feel of the game was nice. Plus the audio was good too. Overall nice game. Keep it up!

mrjoshuamclean 2016-12-13 19:41

@BoneDaddy - Thanks! Really the only point of dropping the weapon is to be able to pick up the orbs and carry them elsewhere. Didn't have time to implement multiple planned weapon types, or to make moving the orb particularly desirable. :\

@scorched - You can definitely play with a keyboard, but I'd suggest changing the control settings, which is easily done through the game launcher.

This is a good retro platformer waiting for more screens, enemies, musics, art... work. Don't think the art is bad. Is simple, retro inspired. Well done!

mrmordem 2016-12-17 00:28

I love the "raw" feeling from the game art, a good retro vibe.
Controls are a bit awkward but no so bad with a gamepad.

It could help to apply more velocity to the dropped item. Maybe throw them farer / higher / backward to be able to "loot" the wanted item more easily.

I liked the music, it goes well with the style of your game. But -just a personal thing- it would be nice to have a "mute" button or at least a "decrease volume" one.

falak 2016-12-17 12:48

The controls are unintuitive but it's not a problem.

mementogames 2016-12-17 22:59

Nice job!
The art and sound are cool and it feels like an old platformer. And yeah, the controls are little bit weird (not only on keyboard). Keep rocking!

Reminds me of the golden era of my Amstrad CPC 6128 :)

The idea is interesting and I like how wave after wave, you start exploring the cave.

Great mood!

popica23 2016-12-20 18:35

Nice game, I enjoyed playing it. :D

samuelsousa 2016-12-28 17:13

Played on laptop... Changed the controls to Z,X,C ... And it works.

Sounds really cool.
Graphics could be a more minimalistic (Imagine that background plain black) or more fleshed out...
Right now they feel like noise.

Gameplay: I found moving to feel a little to slow. That fact that you can only carry one object at a time gives it a real survivor feel. I don't think having more than one orb is a good idea. I would play it like: Steal the Orb, Hide the Orb and Protect it (having more than one makes it confusing).
...Enemies are not great ladder climbers, by the way...

Text scrolling presentation feels much like atari (Is it retro? Is it modern?)
Make me wait between waves!?! 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. You nuts? :)
I didn't like that.

Overall a cool one man prototype entry, with its bugs (but thats okay), that has potential in an endless wave type of gameplay with more than one endless room.

Simple but nice game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 37 games, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/7yEaPmt36yU
