Very fun energy management sim, I hope to see it evolving in the future :D
One detail: the Boiler actually costs $100 and not $50 :P
It could use a better onboarding but it reminded me of my first Sim City sessions when I was a kid. I didn't understand a lot then either :)
Cool little strategy/management game. Wasn't sure what the boiler, pipes, etc. do. At one point I placed a thing and the whole screen went gray (not sure why). Could use some tunes, but the sound effects are nice.
The gray screen thing seems like a bug to me :/ Can you remember what caused it?
Edit: I found the issue (I'm pretty sure) and fixed it.
Interesting game. I could never figure out how the boilers/pumps/pipes/steam engines worked... they'd connect in weird ways, sometimes not let me place boilers (from reading other comments, maybe I didn't have $100!), and when they did get connected, I couldn't rationalize where the values for temperature/fluid/power production came from. Eventually I just threw a bunch together and kept adding more boilers until the steam engines sometimes said power production and it seemed to work, maybe the visuals as to what was connected to/flowing into what didn't matter. Eventually messed up, ran out of coal, ran out of power, and was doomed =). A good ending =)
Nice description! It reminds me to Sim City and Factorio :D
Cool concept ! I like these kind of games. Great work :) Try to make a music next time though. And maybe you can make an ingame tutorial too. Overall cool game, great job and keep coding :)
Hello Factorio :D
Congrats on getting a game with a good level of complexity completed within a short timeframe. Plays as well as expected, with some nice clear graphical assets in use.
Great entry, congrats!
Bit of a learning curve, but worth the time. A solid candidate for further development - would be popular with a niche-gaming crowd at the moment. Enjoyed it - nice work.
Totaly got hooked by your game ! Remind me of factorio !
Overall good game!
That's a good game, a lot of elements to play with. You should just put a explanation screen or info tooltip to play, without that it's hard to understand how to play. But that's a nice one :)
The game is good, but could use some more content. The fact that the only option for power at the start is solar panels, and that they only work slows the game down needlessly at the start, maybe something else would be better? The whole engine system is neat because it's not just a single thing you have to place down. But jet the engine system also doesn't seem like that big of an improvement because of the amount of power you have to spend on digging coal. Overall this is one of the more well-rounded games I've played, good job.
Now, I am almost out of space to build. >.<

A very neat and polished little game! Everything is a little bit small but otherwise I like the graphical style. Some music would have been nice to keep you company while you monopolise the map, but definitely a good bit of fun! Good show! Are you going to try and push yourself in the next jam, this game seems shockingly complete. I'd love to see what else you can make!

You are the winner the following awards: - 1st Place: Game I've enjoyed the most in Ludum Dare 39 - 1st Place: Game I've played the longest in Ludum Dare 39 (about 2 hours) - 2nd Place: Ludum Dare game I've played the longest since Ludum Dare 27
Seriously, I really, really liked your game. (I must admit, that I love base-building games and the mechanics they use, so I might be more enthusiastic than most other players.)
You've distilled down the principle of "just one more thing" to the bare minimum. Graphics are just complex enough so you can distinguish between buidlings. Number of buildings and complexity of the map is perfect. The day-night cycle is perfect to get the player hooked ("just one more day").
Of course it would be nice if you could do more :P then I would play even longer ;) The graphics for the mine and the gold seller are a bit too similar, mostly if they are covered by the "no power" exclamation mark. The "remove" feature with the right mouse button feels wierd, kind of delayed, I'm not quite sure why. Dispite your description on this page it took me some time to figure out how pumps work, it's kind of hard to see that they pump 5 water per side that is open to the lake. Also as pipes connect pumps together, I first assumed that water could flow through pumps, which it can't.
Also the "can't build here" sound doesn't quite convey "you can't build here". And in general, a bit of music would be nice :)
Anyway, I'm really impressed by what you've achieved. Congratulations!
Oops posted my comment twice by accident... sorry
Nice game. It needs some time to get into it though (I had to read your tutorial). A factorio variant. There is also a lot of waiting at the start (Specially when switching tab stop the clock :( ). Overall OK. You have the basis to build upon. Keep building :)
Commenting again after more play. The game runs slower and consume 100% cpu as your base get bigger. This shouldn't happen. There is no excuse for a game this small to be CPU-bounded (unless ugly code). It would be great if we could select which factories we power at night.
Nice game. Reminded the factorio.
SPOILER Warning. The more I play the richer I find the game. Nice balance. I won (All gold mines always producing, gold always sold, stable coal, no solar panel used). The trick is that some efficiency is lost due to a "bug" when temperature is > 100C then you need 5 burners instead of 4 to get the next steam engine to produce. Which means that all steam engines should be disconnected from one another. It could really help if there was a display of whether or not a factory is connected to electricity and producing. The game is quite rich conceptually. It has some non linear behaviour when you run out of coal (which is great to illustrate complex systems failures), because then all burners shut down and it don't know how to reboot any steam engine because it keep the water at 80C everywhere rather than having one at 100C. I encountered a bug, when I lost all my coal, it also lost all my accumulated gold. You should consider not rerendering the whole frame at every tick because it makes the game slow (reducing window size speeds the game by a factor 10).
